News Roundup | Top 50 Footballers | Robben Out?

Okay, some essential news roundup. Hope you know that Drogba, Ballack and Sheva will be back in another week or so. That’s some good news after a series of bad days for Chelsea. There are some interesting quotes from Drogba, Malouda and few others, Timesonline lists (truth is ‘listed long back’) the top 50 footballers at the moment, which does not include Arjen Robben who seems to be surely on his way out.

BBC Sport has this interesting team-by-team analysis of the premier league for the season 07-08. Mark Lawreson has written about all the teams and their prospects this season. Well, I don’t quite value Mark’s predictions and assessments, but I should start believing what he says because he says Chelsea will be the crowned as the premier league champions this season. Makes a nice read!

kaka_ucl.JPG

Could be late news but anyway, Timesonline or ’somebody’ in Timesonline has listed down the top 50 footballers as of date. To no one’s surprise Kaka tops the list. The Chelsea players who feature there are Essien (5), Cech (14), Lampard (16), Drogba (22), Shevchenko (24), Ballack (26), Terry (30) and Malouda (31). Read those clever disclaimer paragraphs before you proceed to the list. They have published few more top lists including ‘Worst 50′ transfers, where Sheva gets a picture up the article ;-)

Just remembered now. Only three more days for the kick-off of the fantasy league. Have you signed up for the BlueChampions fantasy league? Yes right? Ok, now let’s move ahead.

Long time no talk on Robben. It is rumoured that Chelsea wants 27 million pounds for Robben and Real Madrid are thinking in the range of 14 - 15 million pounds. Sounds like a joke isn’t it? Why can’t it be as simple as Kenyon calling Calderon and telling him and “We want 27 million pounds for Arjen” and Calderon saying “No, thanks. That’s too much”. How can there be a communication gap that’s worth about 12 -13 million pounds? Strange.

robben_tackle.JPG

But senior Robben says this:

We hope that the agreement between Real Madrid and the Chelsea can be closed tomorrow [Tuesday]. Between now and Wednesday we think that everything can be solved. My son cannot make any sort of declaration or grant any interview until the agreement between Madrid and Chelsea is reached. His present club will not allow him to speak with the Spanish press until an agreement is reached. Chelsea is a club that protects its players.

So, he is surely on his way out. We are only shagging over the price. As you know already I’m a big fan of him but the prospect of signing Alves makes me tilt towards sending off unhappy Robben.

Elsewhere, Ben Haim sounds very confident as he talks about what’s important for the back four in Terry’s absence.

Of course John Terry is a fantastic player. He helped me to settle in here. We had a few missing, and we want to be 100 per cent in every game we play. The manager told me to play, and I do my best in each game. The defenders can see everything from the back, so of course we need to speak and communicate with the team. But it is not only me speaking, also the whole of the back four have to communicate and it is our job to do that from the back because we see everything.

I’m very sure that he’ll do well. He has the skill, determination and attitude that are required for a centre back (or you can even say for a good footballer). Ben Haim wanted to get Terry’s jersey number but ended getting his centre back role, how sweet for him!

malouda3.JPG

If you think Malouda joined us only because of Drogba, you’re only half correct. He says that the main reason why he chose Chelsea was the team factor than the club factor or anything.

I had a lot of options but for me I chose Chelsea not only because of Didier Drogba but because from the moment he played here I used to watch Chelsea games and it’s a team I really appreciate. I didn’t meet Rafa. I spoke with him many times. I have a lot of respect for Rafa Benitez and I know he appreciates me. But in Liverpool I didn’t feel everyone in the club was like Rafa Benitez and wanted me. That’s why I chose Chelsea.

Lot of people say this about Chelsea and we can also feel this. They all play well together and are buddies even outside the pitch. They think alike and the teamwork comes from the fact that the collective goal in very much etched in their minds.

drogba_jose.JPG

This might sound atrocious for non-Chelsea fans (more so for anti-Chelsea fans). Drogba considers it to be a divine right for Chelsea to win the premier league title every season. How else would you explain these comments from Didier. Well, you can also say that he, alongwith his team mates, are a set of warriors who simply dont want to lose.

The whole Chelsea squad has felt it, it is not nice, and now it is up to us to go out and win back the title. The way last season ended is still fresh in our minds. It was horrible we could feel the Premier League slipping away. After spending all year battling for it, it wasn’t to be for us. Now United will keep the trophy until next May. That hurts even more. To win it three years in a row would have been special but United were strong throughout the season and it is fair to say they played better football for large parts. All I have thought about in the last few months is getting our trophy back. This Chelsea team is built to win things.

I liked this part - “This Chelsea team is built to win things”. Say it loud and clear!

great blog BC, robben can go - we have malouda and young scott sinclair who doesnt seem like a whiner! Let’s get alaves becasue as much as i admire glen johnson’s athleticism his shortcoming is his brain! Go chelsea go BC.

PS: I hope joeblue doesnt contaminate this blog…

Frankly speaking, we’ve got used to Robben not being around. Let’s admit it. It’s not that he played all 60 matches and played really well or something. He’s always on and off. As much as I like him, I’d love to see Alves in Robben’s money.

i dont believe in such top 50s. anyone can come up with a list and get that published. websites like timesonline let one of their sports correspondents run riot with such top 50s. no one is going to agree with anyone’s top 50 etc.

buts still if i have to comment on this top 50, my gripe is that drogba is at 22, which is very given his current form. ronaldo in no.3??? he can’t run 10 metres against good oppositions and he is rated so highly? he has been particularly poor against chelsea, arsenal and liverpool - home and away. he was poor against milan - home and away. lucky him at no.3! And ramos ahead of ruud? i dont think so!

as regards lawro’s predictions, i dont rate them as well, but more and more people have started to believe that this is Chelsea’s season.

mark my words, ben haim is top class and we won’t miss terry.

scott_sinc well said about the top 50s, but he probably rated Sergio Ramos higher than Ruud because he’s 21, 10 years younger than the Dutchman… I see your point, perhaps, and with Real being my second favorite team, I’ve watched them quite often playing together. I’ve got to say, Van Nistelrooy was one influential player last term. Along with Drogba they were the best 2 strikers in Europe.
Alves on our side whets my appetite… I can’t bear watching Ferreira or Johnson underperform one more season. It’s time to plug the biggest hole in our team, SIGNE ALVES and give us a terrific RB.
They have this little thing about our injury situation as well… seems like Drogba and Sheva will miss the Birmingham game and Terry’s out for a month!! At least we have Cech, Tal Ben Haim, and soon, Alex.

I’d rather keep Robben so we’re guaranteed some quality width this season. Kalou is evidently not a winger. However inconsistent he is with injuries, when he’s on form we have absolutely no one better.

If we play a flat 442, that would benefit the two strikers immensely.

We don’t need Robben. Like BC said, we are very much accustomed to not having him around because he is injured so frequently. Besides that we have Malouda, a stronger, more determined, and more consistent left-winger. Robben might look great when he’s on form but how often is that?

If we want to win the Premiership we need consistent performers in the squad. I can’t help but think that Jose and Kenyon recognized this, so they brought in Malouda.

Letting him go (which will evidently enable us to snag Alves) is a fantastic move in my opinion. I love the way Ashley links up with Drogba from his LWB position, and here’s to hoping Alves can do the same from the right!

Let Robben go. He’s not shown much loyalty and I think we’ll be better off without him. Malouda is an EXCELLENT replacement for him. Hes strong and good on the wing and can shoot well too. Robben and his ‘glass ankles’ were completely the opposite of Chelsea who prides themselves on being tough (led by the Bison). Malouda is far more suited to Chelsea’s style of play. And I’ll be honest, Robben was the biggest diver in our team: let him go!

As for Ballack, dont let him go in a million years! Once hes fit, he can be back in our team as the playmaker. Lamps having a bit of a bad run so perhaps a bit of a rest might be good. In any case, Ballack acts as a perfect substitute for Lampard. He takes on the role of AMF perfectly and at the same time, can also be an emergency holding midfielder. Hes hits shots hard and just as well from the midfield. And we can forget even mentioning his headers, which are world-class. I’m a big fan of Ballack and i think Ballack, Lampard and Essien can play in the 4-3-3 midfield together.

Lastly, Id just like to say what formation I would love to be used when eveyone is back from injury

Cech
Paulo Terry Carvalho A.Cole
Essien
Lampard Ballack
Shevchenko Malouda
Drogba

with that 4-3-3, weve got Drogba up front and Sheva to the right. Maloudas the left winger. When Joeys in form and Shevas not, then Joey takes the place. Finally, if Alves is brought in, i believe we can smell the Premiership once again!

I worry what getting another right back (alves) does to Diarra. He seems to be anxious to play and is a good, tough player who often found time on the right side. And it’s not to say that Diarra is comparable to Alves, because he is not. I would just hate to see Diarra go someplace else.

Chelsea does not need Robben , I did not think this way first, but after watching Malouda and renewed SWP , I strongly believe we don’t need robben .
I like him , but he is the first player who leaves chelsea just for money . noone did this before , no one. Eduir NO , Duff No , Melchiot No , nobody . now I hate robben he plays just for money and these kind of players won’t succeed. I am sure . he will spend most of games in Real medical department.

I don’t think Alves will flourish in EPL….he moves forward too much but is not that fast to come back quickly in case of any counter-attacks ,hence would provide too much space for fast paced opposition of which there is no dearth in EPL ….we should rather go for someone like Micah Richards.

The Chelsea Team as I see it, is built t be a ” battering ram”.
Now all who say we’re never gonna get the CL , my answer is :

The castle gates will fall sooner or later if we continue smashing at it time and time again but eventually and surely they will fall.

Moulada for Robben is great ( not cos I dislike Rooben ) cos he is tough.

The goal against ManUre proves it

Radical Evans @16: Diarra may not get a starting place but remember, Chelsea’s priority this season is premier league and champions league. Players like Diarra, Sidwell etc would feature in the domestic cups very much apart from being second choice for PL & UCL games. Plus, I dont think Arsenal needs a right back and they dont need a holding midfielder either. I wonder where Diarra could play at Arsenal, that is if he really goes there.

Manish@18: You’re right. Alves is very attacking and he would create space and gap at the back for the opponents to take advantage. But he can work well in teams where something like total football is practised, Chelsea, to some extent I’d say. When Alves gets way too up, Essien should read the game and fill in the empty right back position, until that attack is over. It’s all about defining and adjusting roles, as per the team startegy and individual specialties.

RH@19: Exactly that’s why I’ve started liking Malouda. This guy is tough and he has this never say die attitude. His power, muscle and strength makes up for any gap in skill between him and Robben.

If Robben had got that ball from Ashley, I don’t think he’d have ended up with a goal, may be with any other defender but not with Rio. Rio would have brought him down harmlessly.

BC @ 22, I am not sure that it would have been Rio bringing Robben down so much as Robben taking himself down. It is hard to count how many decent opportunities he has squandered by his historonics. It makes all of his skill and pace hard to watch when you know an arm waving, leg flailing flop is coming at the end of it.

Malouda is a great player but Robben is also world class and we need him . He’s got the pace , he’s got the technick , mabye not the strenght but when he get’s in a game he always has a goal or an assist . Jose said we can play Robben and Malouda together and I would really look forward to that . With the new tacticks Mourinho is trying to play with 2 wingers and 2 strikers and this would do … Cech,Ben-Haim,Terry,Ricardo,Cole,Essien,Lampard(Mikel),Robben,Malouda,Drogba and Shevchenko….GO Chelsea and win your crown back :D:D

Robben is great player but may not fit in the Chlesea mentality. He is not as strong as many of the chlesea squad and keep going down regularly. The one thing that he has got is pace and trickery. Moluda looked great in the match that he played and should be easily the player to watch this season. Joe Cole is still not finding the form that we expect of him. I remember the match with ManU during the 2005-2006 where he was great. I hope to see more of him.

But still the right wing is the problem we need fix that with Alves very quickly.

I am now more than ever convined that we should let robben go. The guy clearly is bent on leaving. he fancies he must earn more than a player like essien earns. Can u believe that? He is class, no doubt, and for me easily one of the best in the world. I was chatting with a dutch friend recently who told me that back home they do not rate him as much as they do Van Persie- that should say something. I would have loved to have him and Malouda criss crossing and causing terror, when he is not off injured. but like we say, you can take the horse to the river but cannot force him to drink. lets let him go for a good fee. For me, the money should be used to get Alvez and Quaresma. can anyone tell me why a super player like QUARESMA, who is portuguese has not even come on our radar?

By the way, Longrange, i love the idea of playing Sheva on the right in a 4-3-3. I do not love that 4-3-3 much cos I feel drogs tends to be too lonely in that formation but the idea of Sheva playing right and louda left thrills me to no end.

Robben’s departure should give further opportunities to Sinclair. I rate the lad very highly and bel;ieve he will do the Mikel thing this season.

We have the second best ( if not the best ) keeper in the world , we have the England’s captain ( a real commander in the pitch ) , we have a superb midfielder like Essien who (as Jose said) will never stop running and a goalanimal in Drogba and to top it all we have the best manager in the world . I heard that Mourinho said “The only star Chelsea need is me” and I agree with him . If you want to say that Chelsea don’t have a player that they are depended on like Milan on Kaka or Arsenal (was) on Henry than that is true but we have a lot of world class players and I think this is better than having a superstar like Porto has in Quaresma and they all depend on him . I am not saying that Milan can’t do nothing without Kaka but I saw a game a couple of days ago with Milan and every player that had the ball was looking for Kaka to pass it to , I am glad we don’t have a team like that .

Bluchampion ,

Ur blogs democracy is two faced , u can check my earlier comments i hav never abused without provocation , which has always been the case , and more than the word sh** i hav never used other abusive words like wanker etc as far as i cld help it!!!

On the other hand ppl r writing abt Jose being god and such , hav they been shown yellow cards????many ppl were impersonating me and getting away with it , did u do anything??? they still abused me and went away and u deleted my retaliations, why?????

And u say we agreed only on 5-10 percent , which is a joke , we both support Chelsea and that accounts for abt 99 perecent , i dont consider Jose and his jokes 90-95 percent of Chelsea sorry to say!!!!
U say there r restrictions , r they on everyone????praising and worshipping Jose is good but abusing or defying him leads to red cards and all that crap????

What r u trying to prove with all this in the end???? i hav supported u all the time i hav been on the blog , but u stil say we wld get banned etc for commenting on wat we want????And abt M_D , i dont kno if u realized it or not but he was by far the most intelectually gifted person on this blog , yes he did hav a short temper , but can u blame him if ppl like Bingo and such were busy abusing him , why shldnt he fight back?????

In a nutshell BC , i hav no probs with ur rules if they apply to everybody , and banning ppl over fighting their case or discussing other topic , is a complete excuse , i m sorry to say but since now u hav made such a big hit with ur blog u dont give a damn abt the ones who hav been with u as ur blog became a hit , i am not trying to take any credit , its all urs and ur hardwork , but atleast ppl like me, RH , BB58 and M_D shld atleast hav some respect , we r being shunned for ur bandwagon boys!!!!

But i cant blame u , now u r sucessful , why wld u need ppl like us anymore???? u can do as u please , the blog wil still enjoy sucess and i hope for the best for u , ur family this blog and everybody else i hav ever known on this blog!!!
Cheers blue fans and goodbye BC , i hav been faithful to the end , atleast dont forget me , that wld be enough for me!!!!

Maysam @ 17… I have to disagree with you, Robben is NOT just leaving for the money. Are you kidding? Real Madrid is the most prestigious club in the world. If I was a player, I’d certainly prefer playing in a terrific city, in a prestigious place, making more money, and just having a change of scenary. I don’t think Jose has the best relationship in the world with him because of his poor health, and in his mind (as was in millions of people’s) Malouda was brought in to REPLACE him. So he’s not going JUST for the money. And trust me, we don’t need him. Take the money and get Alves, Total Football or not, this kid can play. At least it’ll give us another alternative for free-kicks, as Lampard started going off at the end of the year and Ballack never shined from dead-ball situations.
And guys, you’re telling me we don’t have A superstar?? I’m telling you, Terry is a superstar. He’s a legend. Essien is a super-star and a legend. Cech is only 25, but soon enough… In my opinion he is second only to Buffon and still has a lot of room for improvement. And someone said thank God we don’t have Kaka or a player like him for everyone to look for… Are you kidding?? Kaka is the best player in the world, what do you mean you don’t wish he played for Chelsea?! And how many games have you seen for Milan??? 2? 3? I see about 75% of their games as they’re my favorite Italian team, and they DON’T only look for Kaka… He’s a central part of their team of course, but Pirlo, Seedorf, Gattuso, Seginho, and Ambrosini are all terrific midflielders that can create and play and don’t JUST look for Kaka.

Joeblue, you know I respect you man, but I’ve got to say that you are wronging BC by telling him he has two faced democracy and all this stuff. He treated everyone equally, the people that appologized he forgave and warned, and the people that kept fighting he stopped. It was all getting out of hand and becoming too silly and below this blog’s standards, so someone had to step in and it could only be him. You guys started having personal insults (I’m not saying it was anyone’s fault or whoever started it or whatever…) It had to end and BC ended it, end of story. You guys should have just stopped the fight and went back to the good old discussions we used to have. Too bad it’s come to this, you know?? We used to have some terrific talks!

common bro, TERRY is fantastic n the heart of the team. but ledgend? common… nt yet, mayb not ever. he will b i chelsea’s history bcos he is the heart of the team, but cos they aint tht many legends in chelseas history. u no i right n the world of football knows it. this is da tym 2 change fings, if missd the chance will neva com again. greater players and beautiful football is required. ESSIEN, DROGBA N TERRY, kind of football (ie. no technique or flair) dont cut da mustard. please tell me im wrong?.. n read dis objectively nt as a chealsea fan, as i hav written it

Hey Adonis , i kno there were ruff tiffs , but self defense is not wrong , even right now chelseaconcrack had a go at me , normally i wld hav responded , and then the fight wld hav begun , is it my fault???? why dosent he get banned or yellow carded or whatever????

Its always been this way on this blog , ppl abuse u , if u beat the hell outta them wid both arguments and abuses , BC comes heavy on us!!!!

I dont pretend to be any angel or something , but everybody shld face the same thing , this is a blog debates wld happen , ppl wld fight , but u dont go and ban ppl who hav bben there for so long , M_D wasant passing his time!!!
He had great arguments and everything , go and hav a look at the arsenal blogs or Manure blogs , they fight like hell, but ppl love it , its the passion wid football!!! if u ban the passion there is nothing remaining!!!

New ppl on the blog hav come and gone, sometimes accusing , sometimes abusing , sometimes doing nothing , while we here hav fought for Chelsea all this time , and they get the prefrence????they shldnt be made to feel out of place???? at our costs???? , our allegiance is far proved equal if not more than anyone who has ever visited this blog!!!!

I kno its a shame , but its a shame on BC , for acting like a judge or some great god!!!! its not right!!!!

i think 4 the reason of the money($50 or $54 million) robben should leave 4 madrid. no doubt he his a classy player who gives chealsea a lot flair and create chances wit his dribbles but he’s spent more time wit the medics than on the pitch. malouda is a stronger though a little bit less skillful player than robben. the money wuld come in handy to get daniel alves who 4 me is best right back player in the world. robben or no robben chelsae still is ready to claim back our PL trophy and elusive UCL
