Do you remember the unbeaten home league record we held for a long time? I always had a lot of respect for that record but only this season I kinda realise what a magnificent achievement that was. Imagine going unbeaten in the home league games for several seasons! Incredible! There was a time when it was bloody hard to score a goal at Stamford Bridge, leave alone winning a game here. Probably, as soon as TSO left Chelsea, the aura around Stamford Bridge had gone too.
Having been beaten by Arsenal and Liverpool at ‘fortress’ Stamford Bridge and still having to wait for the Manchester teams to visit the Bridge, the season doesn’t look too good. 12 points off the leaders after 12 games. Given the relative form of the London and Manchester teams, I see this gap increasing to at least 15 points by the end of the year. So I must formally state that I don’t think we’re going to win the title this season. You could say that I’m too late to realise this but I generally dot lose hope so soon. I believe in miracles. But then, if Man City were playing like Man Utd of the last few seasons, I’d have retained hope. But City seem to be steamrolling everyone. So far, they have shown no signs of slowing down and they are only growing from strength to strength.
City’s resolve will be tested in the first three months of 2012. I’m keen to see if City can sustain their superiority despite their involvement in champions league. But then, even City were to slip, I see Man Utd taking advantage of that with their typical late season surge. Would we still be in the race by March? Too many things now need to happen in our favour. Honestly, I’d be quite fine with a champions league spot this season. We need to admit that Man City’s squad is the best in England and they have a good manager. If this Chelsea squad with a new manager/philosophy is going to beat Man City for the title, it must be quite special and we don’t look like doing anything special now.
Ah! We need talk about the match right? Hmm. I thought the playing eleven was a good selection. I was okay with not starting the ex-Liverpool boys. Against us, Pepe Reina has always been error-prone with free kicks. So I was okay with Drogba starting. Malouda starting meant Mata should be on the right. I was a bit concerned about how Mata and Drogba can work together though.
Chelsea’s performance in the first half was forgettable. We hardly created any real opportunities while Liverpool were quite dangerous when they had the ball in our half. They played Bellamy, Suarez and Kuyt which meant they have a forward line that works very hard, chases every ball and constantly puts pressure on the back line. With AVB’s Chelsea playing such a high defensive line, it’s only a matter of time before they nick one. Bellamy is too pacy, Suarez is a fox and Kuyt puts in a double shift every single match. Against them, we had a now-suspect defensive line playing high up on the pitch and has failed to manage even a single clean sheet at home this season. In the away games though, we kept two cleansheets and we won neither of those games.
Later in the first half, Liverpool did finally take the lead from a very smart piece of passing and movement. It all started with Mikel fumbling a ball from Petr Cech, right in front of the D. Mikel’s role has long been in doubt especially since AVB came in. In the last few seasons, Mikel (or his role) was pretty crucial as the wing backs will go attacking and Mikel pretty took the position of the centre back. When the opposition had the ball, Mikel was operating in front of the defensive line to intercept attacks. Now, with the defence playing up so high, he’s further pushed up on the pitch and he doesn’t have the ball skills to hold the ball in tight spaces. Under AVB, Mikel has too little space to manouvre and he’s not finding it comfortable at all. Mikel uses his body than his feet to keep the ball. What we probably need is a holding midfielder with ball skills like Oriol or Josh McEachran (there I go!).
On this first goal though, I still do not figure why Petr Cech would pass to Mikel while the Liverpool forwards are still in the zone. Mikel is not a Pirlo who can collect the ball, keep it under pressure and quickly launch an attack with a dream pass. Under AVB, we don’t see Petr Cech taking long goal kicks. Any manager watching Chelsea would know that there’s a chance if the ball receiver’s are hassled. Liverpool did just that all first half and were finally rewarded.
About 10 minutes into the game I actually realised that Drogba’s presence was becoming counter-productive. One is, we started launching longballs for Drogba (without skill that’s just hoofing up, isn’t it?) and Drogba’s movement did not complement our cheif playmaker, Juan Mata. You can say all that you want about Fernando Torres but when he’s in the team with Mata, you see Chelsea playing some nice football and creating opportunities. When Torres joined us in Jan this year, he did not fit into our style of football and now, it is Drogba who doesn’t fit anymore. This is not a knee-jerk comment after a home defeat. This has been the case for some time.
At halftime, I expected to see Torres for ineffective Drogba. AVB chose to keep Drogba until about 5 minutes to full time. I thought that was surely a mistake. Later AVB brought in Sturridge for Mikel which was a good substitution but that still meant Malouda would be on the left and Mata would be on the right. When Mata and Sturridge play as the wide men you can see them interchange positions a lot. When Malouda plays as the winger, he does restrict the overall movement and fluidity of our play. All said, it was Malouda who assisted for the equaliser which I do think was a mis-hit shot. With Sturridge always being alert in those areas, we equalised. For about 10-15 minutes, the momentum was with Chelsea. We should have taken a lead if not for Reina’s save. When we passed that phase of play not capitalising on the momentum, I knew the game’s not safe.
As I tweeted, while I was expecting the ex-Liverpool players to score the winner, it was the ex-Chelsea man who found the net. A fantastic goal. He was virtually unchallenged as he danced into the penalty area to slot home the winner. It was the 87th minute. All it needed was one dodgy tackle or a strong body check. The goal actually reminded me of the goal that Messi scored against Real Madrid in the first leg of the champions league semi final last season. I’ll tell you why. In that game, Madrid already had a player sent off and several of their players on yellow and they didn’t want to risk missing few more players for the second leg. They simply ‘allowed’ Messi expecting him make a mistake. Messi being Messi, he scored. It was hailed as a great goal. I didn’t buy that then too. If Madrid had all eleven players on the pitch and weren’t scared of the barca-friendly refs, he could have been stopped. All through the game Messi was kept silent and was practically invisible.
Chelsea have been picking up a lot of red cards of late. Remember, the current slump in form began against QPR when we had two players sent off. Ever since that QPR game, I could see a lighter approach in Chelsea’s tackling. Probably, we took a gamble. May be we thought Johnson might get too excited after that solo run and could sky it. Johnson is a good finisher for a right back and he took it very well. I wouldn’t put my money on the current Chelsea team to make miraculous come backs. As soon as Johnson scored, I knew it was over.
We’re not doing all that well from a league standing point of view. There’s a mad fight out there for the third and fourth places and we are right in the mix with Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Newcastle for those two spots. Interestingly, our form now is like that of Liverpool and Arsenal of recent seasons. We don’t no longer know which are our winnable matches. We get beaten home and away. We are involved in ‘exciting’ matches. We look vulnerable. AVB knew he’s on the hot seat when he took the Chelsea job but now he will feel it himself. But you’ve to give it to the man. He was not apologetic. He was not mincing words. He was very confident and clear.
The situation in the league is not good for us. It is not impossible to turn it around but it is not the brightest of starts in the Premier League for Chelsea in the last 10 years.
The owner didn’t pay €15 million to get me out of Porto just to pay me another fortune to get me out. It’s not a question of the owner having patience. We are committed to what we are creating for the future. We have enough talent to compete in all competitions and that is our perspective at the moment. The situation in the League is not good, it’s not the brightest start for Chelsea but we believe we can still turn it around. It doesn’t look good being 12 points behind such a strong leader as Manchester City but the December fixtures give us hope.
The perspective is we have to win every game if we want to make this a title challenge. There is no running away from responsibilities, there is no calling this a year of transition. Our responsibility is to win the most amount of trophies and at the moment we are in all of them and that is what we have to believe and focus on.
I’ve written a lot in the earlier blog on AVB’s new philosophy and the focus being on the future than on the present. I’m very much behind AVB. I think he’s made mistakes and we’ve paid for those. But there’s something about AVB that makes me think he’s set this right. Of course that doesn’t mean winning the league this season. He has very clear ideas and thoughts. He has got the conviction and confidence. He’s got the support of the owners, management and supporters. He hasn’t got the results. His team doesn’t replicate half the passion that he displays from the dugout. Despite all these, he’s firm with what he wants to do. He’s more focused on creating the future and there’s some collateral damage. I’m more patient with a man who fails now but holds promise for a better tomorrow than a man who succeeds short term and has no plans for the long term.
Am I disappointed? Yes. Do I think AVB has done well so far? No. Does the buck stop with him? Yes. Do I think he is the man for us? Yes.

Finally a post.
Is avb the man for us??
Dosent seem like it, he cant yet understand the weaknesses or strengths of the team, refuses to learn from mistakes. With the way all our rivals are playing (and by that I mean spurs, arsenal etc) we are the worst attack wise, defence wise etc.
The torres joke carries on, I agree drogba is finished but so is that once good striker, 5 goals in some 50 app not really better football.
What of this great future?? I cant see it, are there any promising players coming through? No, any player getting really awesome, um nope, just empty promises from a man who seems a very poor version of wenger. Where exactly is this hope coming from?? Blind faith?
I wouldn’t even like to comment on a veiled swipe at messi, too many problems in our little hut to worry about what princes do at royal feasts.
Looking at our squad, players and manager there is no way, no way we will be in the top 4. I pointed these problems before when ppl decided to live in fantasyland and think of titles, I sau it now, get ready for a lot of midtable mediocrity.
BC, your blog is constantly just a haven of sense and reason, a pleasure to read after trawling through articles and posts on other web pages that are declaring crisis, and saying how ‘the club is dying’ and ‘the manager is clueless’. Without doubt the worst part of being a Chelsea fan is how melodramatic and misanthropic the fan community gets once things start to go bad. No its not enjoyable watching the team struggle like this and current performances from the majority of the squad at the minute are not acceptable, but constantly picking flaws and calling for players heads isn’t gonna help anyone or facilitate any kind of change. I can speak from experience as well that it only makes you more miserable.
hey BC
true words..we need to forget this high defense line.. simple! drop Mikel (use him for the cups or somehting) buy freddy Garin (Porto), buy Gotze, sell Drogba and or Anelka, buy Cavani/Falcoa/Higuain.
I have always said .. buy Josip Ilici, i heard we have had out eye on Jovetic.
Luiz needs to be pushed to DM or benched.. his head is too Hot!! terry is passed it. Play Alex with him for now. Sell A. Cole. sell malouda( replace with Gotze). sell Bosingwa (replace with Gregory)
integrate, Ryan, Romeu, Josh or loan him.
but we definately need:
Guarin, Gotze, Canvani and ilici buy gregory summer
I still look at the replay of the decisive goal and can´t believe how wrong our positioning was at the time. Just try it and stop the movie at the moment when the ball is flying over our defensive four. Can you believe where AC is standing? How comes that our positioning is so terribly wrong? It is quite easy to say that AC did the tackle wrong but the true is he was fatally out of position at the start of the action. If you´re running like mad 40 metres across the pitch just to be where you were expected to be at the start of the action, opponent has got enough time to change his movement and round you with a relative ease.
As we are trying to play high line, the problems of our centre-backs start to appear. Terry is undoubtedly a first-class defender, but not suitable for this kind of defending. Not only is he getting slower, he also tends to loose the ball in close spaces, which is happening quite often with this kind of defending. Also during Liverpool match he lost the ball several times in very dangerous positions, fortunately there was Luis who went quickly behind his back and stole the ball back. Alex and Mikel are the same sort of players – strong and decisive in physical challenges but not so fast and reliable on the ball in precarious positions. Also we don´t quite know the moves of the high-line defence when we loose the ball. Dalglish undoubtedly counted on this our weakness when planning the tactics for the match; that is probably why Bellamy got the start ahead of Carroll. I am very eager to see AVB solving this rather quickly; otherwise it could cost us quite a lot this year.
Anyway, I agree with BC that AVB is the right man for the club. Not even Ferguson impressed Manure fans at first. Moreover, AVB is the first man from the Mourinho times that is trying to really change our play. And this can´t be done overnight. But I hope Roman knew this very well when he opted for his services and paid quite a fortune just to get him from Porto. KTBFFH.
sorry but avb is simply not the right man for the job.
hiddink is going to be chelsea manager soon.
I think Jones has a point here:
Vinnie Jones says Chelsea may need to sell captain John Terry if Andre Villas-Boas is to mark his authority on the club.
The former Blues and Wimbledon midfielder suggested that with Terry still in a powerful position at Stamford Bridge, Villas-Boas is not in complete control.
England captain Terry is the subject of a police investigation into claims he racially abused QPR defender Anton Ferdinand, a claim which he denies.
Terry is also one of the most influential members of the dressing room at Stamford Bridge, and Jones said that may not be a good thing if Villas-Boas is attempting to revamp the club’s style of play.
“Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if [John Terry] moves on,” Jones told BBC Radio Five Live.
“Sometimes, you’ve got to clear the decks. You think, ‘How can you leave someone like JT out?’
“But sometimes your big, high-profile players go and other players come in and, all of a sudden, the coach is in charge again.”
Jones also compared the situation at Stamford Bridge to that of Sir Alex Ferguson as he took over at Old Trafford 25 years ago, and believes that the Terry racism inquiry is unsettling the club.
“That’s all got to be sorted out,” he added.
He also stated that owner Roman Abramovich needs to stand by his manager, but if results don’t improve then the fans could turn on the Portuguese coach.
“They made a bold statement putting such a young fellow in charge of such a high-profile club and I think that Abramovich has got to stick with it, especially until next season,” Jones continued.
“He has to show face. I think he’s definitely going to give him some time, I really do.
“If you look at the guy’s record, he’s going to make decisions that the fans are not going to be happy with.
“If a coach comes into a new club and makes decisions that fans are not happy with, but gets the results, they go with the coach.
“It’s as simple as that. If results don’t go the right way then they start shouting for his blood.”
BC … You always seem to make excuses for Chelsea players .. and I guess this is what AVB does too .. and therefore they play like this !!!!
I don’t care about Messi but Johnson is no messi .. how can the defence of a title-challenging (Well !!) squad just let a right back whiz past them just because they are on a yellow. They either man-mark Johnson if he is that special or simply deal with his runs. It was sickening to see to Terry’s half hearted attempt to stop the ball going into the net. Whatever happens and next I don’t know, but this is shambolic defending and no amount of ‘mind-probing’ and excuse making will help. there are other teams in the premier league that get yellow cards too.
bluebrother,
I’m not making excuses for the players or the team. I’m only trying to find explanations for why we are playing this way. We’ve made a bad start to the league and there are several reasons (not excuses): (a) High line defence (b) poor offside traps (c) players who can’t control the ball in tight spaces (d) cards/fouls due to panicky defending due to high up defending (e) lack of fluidity up front (f) poor finishing (g) Petr Cech’s close range keeping (h) Boas’ unwillingness to drop the experiment (I’m fine with this though).
I’m only trying explain the situation from the observations I’ve made. We can complain about the players all day long but it’s the manager who picks them. It’s Boas who said he’s happy with the squad. I’d have liked if ge had said we’re not there yet but he toed the party line.
Point accepted. I see where you are coming from. I don’t mean our season is over. It never is until its mathematically impossible. But the players must take the blame here. AVB’s policy is not unreasonable. These are well paid professional footballers. Also football is really not that complex no matter what anybody tells you. I think this group of players can implement AVB’s tactics. Hell, they have to. They wear the SHIRT. A high defensive line is not unheard off. Plus AVB should that experienced campaigners like JT and Cole would atleast have some positional sense in them. Plus Luiz really needs to sort himself out. If you start picking out the faults you will see that very little blame actually lies with AVB.
I am getting used to losses……but that sarcasm aside …..I believe that Roman has got to bring in players who can actually deliver the football he wants……he’s got the money to do it and I doubt he is going to be happy with mid-table mediocrity….
I feel Chels is at a stage like Barca was a few years ago…. playing Ronadinho… Deco and a few others and generally adrift / in transition stage…. and anyways the quality in the EPL has definitely gone up while Chels has been on a downward trajectory so these kind of results shouldn’t be that earthshaking for us…
Maybe this downfall (there was last year’s losing /drawing streak too ) is good for the club and the team…. now we realize there has been a paradigm change and it’s time to think for the future rather than rant about or react to every incident in every game…
I have to say I agree with Bc on this, the buck stops with avb, if he wanted to play this way he should have forseen how to do it, this high line problem is not new it was the same under scolari and only after hiddink got rid of it did we really bounce back.
The players are the same, if avb wanted different tactics he should have bought the players for it, or gotten some youngsters, as they say you cant teach an old dog new tricks.
These players are too old and have been playing the same way for far too long either play to their strengths or get the right ones to replace them.
Frankly speaking atleast half a dozen teams in the premier league have better attack and defence than us so champions league is out of the question.
Lets not fool ourselves again we are not a top team anymore, not even one chelsea player can get into barca, bayern, real or city. Lets be realistic and aim according to what we are, not what we were.
BC, I am glad you took a pragmatic view of this game and rightly back Andre for the long term. I think long term, he is the man for Chelsea. He’s headstrong but he is not stupid. I am not a football manager, neither am i doing any coaching badges or anything. I am just a student of the game like most contributors on this blog. In your last article about the team’s philosophy i made a point about us keeping the ball, passing, keeping it ala Barca. That is the philosophy. If your opponent doesn’t have the ball he can’t hurt you, that is the Barca philosophy. Protect the ball at all cost. We are trying to do this but yes, it’s been said countless times, we do not have the players for this style of football. In Andre’s system, it has become apparent that we lack true football players. Our players lack the basics of the game. Like passing, trapping the ball, quick thinking, distribution, off the ball movement and the likes. You see BC, in England, GRIT comes first. No matter how challenged technically you are, you can make up with Hardwork and Determination. That is why you have teams like Wolves beating us last year, Birmingham, and the likes. If you turn up with the attidtude that you will win at the end , forget it. Our team lacks the application and attitude to “fight” on the pitch. That is how you win matches in England. That is why Arsenal is not winning trophies after all their slick football. That is why Mourinho’s team was hard to beat. Our players have become timid and shirk from physical confrontations. Ashley Cole since that injury against Everton two season’s ago does not go into tackles anymore. Bosingwa never tackles. Terry’s too slow to even get into tackles. David Luiz can distribute balls but can’t time his tackles. So all our defenders tend to be ‘standoffish’. Any of you guys remember the slalom run Onuoha made to score Sunderland’s goal against us last season? It was just a carbon copy of Glen Johnson’s last Sunday night. We lack the fight and that is apparent to all teams. You get under Chelsea’s skin and they can’t stand it.
In Barca’s system they’ve always had a ball winner in the team. Rijkaard’s Barca had Yahya Toure. Guardiola’s Barca have Busquets. We lack a genuine ball winner since the demise of Michael Essien. That’s why i think Cheik Tiote will be absolutely immense for us. Barca’s defence is also protected by a relentless midfield. They hound the opposition till they have the ball back. Our’s dont do that. Lampard doesn’t work hard enough to win balls back. Ramires isn’t co-ordinated enough. Mikel ,well Mikel, what exactly does he bring to the team. We may need him when protecting a lead in a game. Not when you are chasing a game. Mikel for a big guy, is just plain frustrating. Lack’s speed, rarely win’s headers, can’t shoot and is perpetually shot of confidence and chooses to pass to the player standing next to him instead of orchestrating our attacks.
And with our strikers off-form it makes for a cocktail of absolute shambles. Andre need’s to find a balance between our philosophy and winning matches. The team need’s to play with passion and determination and quit the lazy attitude. We lack the players for the system Andre wants. We can’t change our team over night. It will take time. We just need to keep plucking away till we find the right players for the system. In the mean time be prepared for some awful results along the way.
Of course you’re right that the current status of the club is cause for serious reevaluation but I have to disagree vehemently that Chelsea is no longer one of the elite clubs in Europe. To hold undeserved esteem for one’s club like is a pointless and pitiful act, but to underestimate/condemn a side unjustly, is just as bad if not worse.
I know when results are going badly little issues become over exaggerated and hard to ignore, but trust me they are not so significant and once our players start to gather at bit of form then the squad list will start to look a lot stronger than it does now. To point where many aspects will be to the envy of those clubs you listed, namely City and Bayern.
To put Chelsea completely out of the the picture at this stage is still slightly rash, to put them out of the top four is unnecessarily pessimistic and to consign them to ‘midtable mediocrity’ is cynicism to unthinkable extremes. Don’t get carried away.
joeblue,
Ronin
If you havent noticed we are already out of the top 4, already lost 4 times, lost every big match in the league, conceded more goals than anyone else in the top six, lost back to back home league games for the first time since Roman came, our centre back has scored more league goals than our 50 mn pound forward. Anelka, malouda and drogba have a total of 3 goals in some 25 app between them, our top scorer is a 33 year old midfielder, we have kept 2 cleansheets in 12 games, with 31 yellow cards and 3 red cards.
Atleast I have facts to back up what I say, you think I am a cynic I think you’re a delusional escapist.
High line shmy line … it doesn’t make any difference when so many players are playing so poorly. I have to say that I feared the worst when I saw the midfield for Saturday, much as Lampard and Ramires have undoubted qualities, a 3-man midfield comprising those two plus Mikel is never going to stand a chance against a team like Liverpool … Mikel is just not good enough, despite all the early promise, he is just never going to be the man in that position for us …. Romeu looks a much better bet. Malouda? Please … he has enjoyed good spells at Chelsea but he’s never going to do it when it really matters … he doesn’t/can’t defend/track back and his lack of awareness for the second Liverpool goal was awful. Drogba is clearly past his best, and Sturrdige must wonder why he is not getting picked to play down the middle … he’s not a winger … end of! He must be ahead of Drogba and Torres, surely? We can’t continue to kid ourselves about Torres, but I still live in hope on that one …
JT has been a great player ror Chelsea, although, with the benefit of hindsight, he did play alongside Gallas or Carvalho, and behind Makelele for most of his best years … Cech was beaten at the near post 3 times against Arsenal, whilst Bosingwa and Luiz are not the sort of defenders that will prosper in the Premiership.
I think we have to stick with AVB and see what he can do … I just wish he wouldn’t trot out the usual platitudes after a defeat. We didn’t play really well at any time against Liverpool, and as for Sturridge celebrating his goal like we’d just won the League … all we’d done is equalise at home!!!
why nobody ever talks about john terry mistakes?i have seen lots of his mistakes in the past matches just like the johnson goal he should be the back up when he went pass ashley cole and his tackles has been very poor so does david luis needs to be a little be calm but i still have faith in AVB i still believe he wont change the team overnight we gonna have bad and good results i know we wont win nothing this year im cool with it.just wanna see the team playing good football and restore the respect at stanford bridge.most of chelsea fan are like fat kids who loves cakes everyday a couple of poor results they called the manager to be sacked,on the stadium they just cheers when chelsea score a goal and then sit back wait for more things to happens.in old trafford, reebok stadium,st james park, white hart line etc. actually most of the teams in the premier league the fan atmosphere are just superb they give hope to the team even when they are loosing
Samba
Ridiculous response, we are paying skyscraping salaries to the players some of the top most earners in the world for what?? To be mediocre? Thn we might as well play some youngsters and knock off our huge wage budget.
This sort of pathetic mentality baffles me, we pay through the nose so that the club affords the salaries of these supposed stars who put in half hearted weak performances game after game. And if we question that thn we are not as good as bolton fans?? Or stoke fans?? Do you think if someone at stoke is at 200k scores 5 in 50 fans would be okay with that?? I know fans of such clubs and they get on the back of underperforming players when they are on 20-30k, let alone 200.
As for OT I dont even think you have been there, its an effing library, its all good when they win, most matches they are just lounging and eating.
I think fans like you should get off your high horses and stop thinking ‘holier than thou’. As fans we have full right to have our opinion….and guess what?? Its possible you wont like it, get over yourself.
joeblue,
Your kind of attitude is the poison of these discussion boards; you just exude pessimism with selective recollection and statistics, and then express them so melodramatically that it’s almost too cringing to read.
Another interpretation of the table at the minute could be that even though we’re on a major slump, we’re still tied on points with Liverpool (who I imagine won’t be too disappointed with their season so far, whilst we’re declaring crisis) and Arsenal who have the luxury of the most in-form #9 in world football and let’s be honest, Arsenal’s defence and midfield is as tame as ours is, even when they’re playing well. As for Spurs, they may have a quality a starting XI but an injury to any one of them leaves a weakness in their side, and they’re not exactly racking up the clean sheets either.
My point is if Chelsea are positioned in and amongst these teams even when they’ve got all these problems you listed in your response to me, surely then it won’t make me a “delusional escapist” to assume a full firing Chelsea with an in-form squad is still a cut above all these sides, at a level where we are at least the equals of Utd and not that far behind city.
You are entitled to your opinion, and fair do’s you express it as eloquently as any other poster on this blog, but if you honestly believe from now that mediocrity is the norm for our football club you are definitely wrong.
Now I’m off to pray you stay wrong…..
Ronin
Although I would love to carry on the debate I know we wont see eye to eye, so lets agree to disagree.
As far as your comments on me go, I’ll take them as a compliment.
Cheers.
Ronin,
First of all.. i thank BC for posting an article after such a long while…
Hi ronin.. I jus saw this banter going on between u and JB .. and i wanna tell you.. i was in the same position as you a couple of months bac with JB… but then i realized… he isn’t completely wrong.. he just has this flair for being dramatic at times… but that’s ok.. ‘coz many of the concerns pointed out by jb.. arise from some basic flaws that we have seen repeatedly this season….
Ronin, puttin your point in case about us being better than spurs, arsenal and l’pool and not so far behind city and utd… I wud go a step further and say.. that if everything goes acc. to our “potential” .. we are supposed to steamroll spurs, l’pool and arse… hammer utd.. and beat city by a 1 goal margin at least… but that is provided we play with the “purpose” and “direction” these other teams are playing right now… and i would also include Newcastle in this list…
here in india .. we get chelsea tv on ten action.. so i sometimes get to see chelsea’s matches twice..
… i have noticed a trend/pattern in the matches we’ve lost and even in the matches we’ve won.. our passing, off the ball running, possession and defensive responsibilities leave a lot to be desired… we regularly pass to our opponents, hardly close down on opponents with the aggression we are known for, we are easily dispossessed of the ball ‘coz we are unsure where to pass and spend too much time wondering.. and we have already spoken so much about our high defensive line allowing attacks from either flanks….all this probably shouldn’t happen if each person in the squad has a common “simple” philosophy drilled into his head…. based on these patterns there is only one word that comes to mind.. “confusion”… just to point out some instances of this state of mind on the field.. the first goal in l’pool match, walcott’s goal in arse match(that tore me apart btw), holt’s goal in the norwich game, both 2nd and 3rd goals in utd game, the goal scored by the everton sub… i could go on…
Some things that i don’t understand is romeu and lukaku’s constant exclusion from the first team squad… i have resigned myself to losing McE to swansea on loan and may be losing him to utd or arsenal from there (there… I’ve said it)… why in god’s name do we play mikel who has been consistently under-performing….why are alex and anelka not playing…this list could just go on!!!
i am a marketing professional… and i can absolutely positively recognize the symptoms for verbal diarrhea….
.. after AVB’s first interview, my first impression was that he was all words and no substance.. i was so happy to be proven wrong after watching the initial matches… but then again after our game against l’pool i think i might be just right… Sigh!!!!
its nice to know that i’m not the only one in pain out here…..
If anyone saw Cavani and Hamsik play today, well I’ll say I would trade any player from our team for those 2.
The only exception being Ivanovic.
In terms of squad quality Tottenham is better than us. In fact that tells everything but I’ll continue. Our central midfield of Mikel-Ramires-Lampard doesn’t have a bit of creativity. If I was a football manager and dream myself playing with that trio in the midfield at night I would consider that a nightmare. Last week I saw a Chelsea reject, Lassana Diarra, playing for Real Madrid and couldn’t believe that we got rid of him and now we play Mikel in his role – Diarra is much better than Mikel.
AVB came to Chelsea with new hopes and ambitions but he made a lot of mistakes. He should have brought many new faces with himself, i.e. young players who suit the filosophy of attacking football. Instead he tried to utilize the senior players who either never played that type of football or not fit to play anymore. Another mistake, like Ancelotti he continues playing same players over and over even when it’s obvious that the system doesn’t work. While AVB is too scared to try McEachran in the midfield we have already lost chances to win the EPL. The current first 11 is obviously very weak to compete with the best teams of England and Europe but somehow AVB, someone who spent so many years analyzing football, doesn’t realize this. Even a guy from the street can make Chelsea play the attacking football AVB plays now: score 1-2 goals and then be outscored by your opponent. As long as AVB keeps playing same players Chelsea will keep losing points. It’s time to start playing McEachran regularly in the central midfield, Mikel should be dropped – Luiz should be tried in the holding role, Mata should be give a chance to dictate the game in the central midfield together with McEachran. New wingers should be bought when the transfer window reopens.
Here is some juicy rumours:
Rumours linking Nicolas Anelka with a January move to China were fuelled when the striker did not travel with Chelsea to Bayern Leverkusen for Wednesday night’s UEFA Champions League clash.
The Frenchman was left back in London on the day it emerged he had been made a lucrative offer to join Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua.
Anelka, who is out of contract at Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, has started just three Premier League games this term and has been heavily linked with a January exit.
It is thought Shanghai Shenhua are facing competition from Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala, AC Milan and a host of Major League Soccer sides to sign the 32-year-old.
Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas revealed fitness problems were not the reason for Anelka’s omission from the Germany trip, saying: “He’s not injured.
“Nico has been used, as you know, more times as a winger, rather than a striker.
“We’ve decided to include a different squad for this game, not because of Nico’s ability because his ability is tremendous.”
good article and i dont see us even getting the first position in champions league
kaz,
Oh man, we fans surely tend to go overboard both with love and hate! I still remember you were (among others, me including) rooting for AVB all the way and saying that he didn’t put his foot wrong yet, and now only after couple of months him managing Chelsea you’re basically calling him a blowhard. This is unfair to him and to our players too. I’d like to notice he is not working in marketing (no disrespect meant for your profession), he is in people management, and this is not an easy task with Chelsea stars. Remember, he didn’t put foundation of this team together, he just tried to improve style and tactics of our existing players, added some spark in the middle, brought some perspective players, but he couldn’t change 100% of the team in one season, this is not done quickly and surely it’s not needed. He wanted to use what we have already because he belives in our team and wanted to inspire them. What’s wrong with that? Didn’t we all agree that this season will be a transition period? Then how do you think transition should look like? We still have an old guard that carries most of the load, we are trying some younger players while trying not to lose in competitions we are in. The transition won’t be easy… one example: tell me who is a better captain than Terry and who can carry captaincy on when he is sent to the bench because of his subpar playing. We have these questions for a lot of positions. On the method AVB chose for us (high line, pressing etc) have some doubts, not so sure this is what we need… we are not Barca, we will never be, and I don’t want us to become Barca impersonators… but I am not a football manager…. so I am willing to give AVB the time he needs and only then make my judgments. What I know for sure I would not change AVB to any other manager at this time, nor in next 2-3 years. I believe in 2-3 years AVB will be the most sought after manager in world football and am still gald we got him. Let’s give him a chance.
Joeblue,
Fair enough geezer, I was hoping you’d admit defeat eventually but I’ll settle for an honorable truce.
Nameless Member,
I agree with a lot of what you’ve said, but again you’ve bought up this idea of creativity, and disntinctly at lack of it in midfield and I’m still not convinced. I’ve seen Lampard pick out some incredible passes this season, I’ve also seen Ramires and Meireles play some fantastic through balls and deft little flicks that have resulted in clear goal-scoring oppurtunities.
What I’m starting to think is more of an issue at the minute is this real lack of symmetry in the team. If You take the fairly typical starting XI of Cech, Iva, Luiz, JT, Cole, Rami, Mikel, Lamps, Sturridge, Torres and Mata, you’ll probably notice the three most important players are all on the left hand side whilst on the other flank we’ve got a CB at RB, a CM at RM and a CF at RWF. What this means is no matter how we set up or strategize most plays are naturally gonna drift to left hand side which will leave gaps all over the place and force players even further out of position to cover for our defense with its infamously high line.
Obviously the natural solution would be to sign a quality RB, RM & RWF but obviously that could cost a lot and may unfairly force out some of our best performers this season, and some players who most fans wouldn’t disagree will be integral to future success. Just wondered what your opinion on this idea was, interested what Joe, Kaz and Xerxesk think as well
marks,
Hi marks.. well you are right about one thing… I did root for AVB in the start.. but what i mentioned in the last post was just my first impression after AVB’s first interview as a manager.. i agree he isnt into marketing ( wud be great though…
) .. but the kinda responses in his first interview were too elaborate for thei rown good.. and hence the impression… well leaving that aside… i really was rooting for AVB in the start of this campaign and I still am.. i definitely don’t want him fired for another 2 years atleast… but lately his tactics/decisions have left me in a delusional state….and i am just a little more upset than usual coz.. we the gaps in our current condition seem to be so glaring.. that it looks like it’ll take a considerable time to recover.. (i really hope i am wrong about this)…
You tell me marks… wud you be ready to accept 5th or 6th position in the table by season end.. just on the pretext of us goin thru a “transition” phase….. yes.. we can be patient.. but at what cost… ???
People here and in general like so much to believe in things that don’t exist just to cover the failure of their team. Whoever believes that the current Chelsea squad is in a transitional phase is simply delusional. Transitional phase can happen only when a manager regularly plays youngsters together with senior players to integrate the former to the team and hence make them ready for the upcoming seasons. Beside Sturridge and if you want a newcomer Mata there are no new players played regularly by AVB. If you dare to consider what AVB has done so far as a transitional phase then last year was also a transitional phase because we bought Ramires, Luiz and Torres. LOL. For how many years this transitional phase is going to continue if every year is transitional? Seriously, by keeping our youngsters on the bench or sending them on loan or just selling them we keep wasting time. If AVB won’t start playing McEachran and some other youngsters regularly as soon as possible then the new team won’t be ready for the next season and for the next season’s failure you will also come up with an excuse of a so called “transitional phase”. It seems Chelsea’s transitional phase will go on forever. Just ask Lampard and Terry.
Another loss at Bayern.
The winner takes it all in the last CL game. Is this going to be the firsts within Roman era – First time out of top 3, not qualifying for 2nd round ?
Time for AVB to go.. Bring back Hiddink
Scolari looks better now and Grant – a saint
@CFC
Bayer! not Bayern. Please..The two are as different as United and City..:P
I follow the Bundesliga quite closely. I can tell you it is the most closely fought league on the pitch and best administered off it. The Clubs are always making profits and are home-growing talent as well. Dortmund have been naive in the Champions League otherwise they too would have done a great deal of damage.
Now that I have harped about the bundesliga. I do not agree with your ‘Time For AVB to go’. The team lacks confidence. They lack the spirit. It was the same last season when we had the ‘bad moment’. Carlo wasn’t sacked at that time. Chelsea did recover. I still believe AVB is the man for us. I think its good the team isn’t doing well right from the start. I strongly believe this will be a ‘Season Of Two Halves’ for us..
This however I completely agree with.
Nameless member,
By transition I understand the new manager, new tactics, new style etc. This has nothing to do with bringing in 2-3 new players. Some teams need to stay with their players, some other may need 10 new people. This season is for checking where we are and what needs to change, and I am ready to give AVB time for that at least. Plus we can buy someone in January. Mancini took several years to change Mancity too. Important thing is what AVB does with this information. I haven’t seen 2nd part of today’s game yet, was going to watch recording on DVR later today after work, thank you for spoiling it for me guys
. But in the first half Danni played very good on the right, Drogba had a permanent bad touch, Bosi was on the left and wasn’t bad (weird) but wasnt bothered much, and Luis played very calm and rational game. We didnt have any actiucity on the leaft..I turned off TV after 1st half in good mood…WTF happened after that?!
kaz,
My reply to you is: I dont know. I’d rather us not declare our intentions for the place at the end of the season. We still need to fight for the top position and don’t give up. Otherwise there is no reason to be in thins fight at all. I am hoping for the place that qualifies us for CL at least. There is a hard work ahead but it’s still duable. Just look at Arsenal now and remember where they were just short time ago after beating by ManU. Ditto for ManU, but it’s the opposite case (they are just mediocre now but how they started!).
Just looking at these posts is horrifying enough, do you guys know who you sound like?? Gooners, and whats worse atleast they play good football, have quality youngsters, have a huge stadium and turn a profit.
Downward spiral…
Funny how we are struggling defensively and the two times Alex had played we had kept 2 clean sheets!!!
I suspect turmoil in dressing room too…..
@Marks
You point out how United is mediocre now. What you infact donot point out is that since 1-6 defeat they have won so many matches 1-0 on the trot despite not playing very well. That amounts to 3 points each. Now I am not in the mood to spell out our record in as many matches but you get the point.Their champions league destiny is also still more or less in their hands. Ours is too so good. Now you might say they got an easy group but they have also reached the finals twice in 3 years. Plus the likes of Jones, Cleverley, Welbeck , Smalling have have already become key members of that squad. Look at us in comparison. There is no point cherry picking and pointing out facts to suit your arguments. We all might hate them but transitional period or not they are always up there. We have to start winning, even if its 1-0. People confuse pragmatism with change in philosophy. A couple of nice solid 1-0 wins would do you no harm Sir Andre !!! Until all we do is hoof it up to Drogba we are not deviating from our attacking philosophy. Just give me 1-0 for now.
bluebrother,
I don’t disagree with you and I would like 1:0 results for the start too, like in today’s game. I have watched 2nd half later after work… I am just trying to understand what’s going on, why we let it slip away again…I gotta say we didn’t play bad imo. Some mistakes from the previous games were addressed, formation was adjusted. But we are lacking steel, confidence, believe. These same players are capable of better play. I am trying to guess what goes into AVB decision making, how he picks up players for the game and chooses subs. Some of his moves seem wrong to me. E.g. I wanted to see Torres play today, he needs playing time for god’s sake and Drogg is lethargic… I don’t know what’s going on in the dressing room, but I feel that we don’t have a real leader or a drill sergeant who can kick their asses and wake up the guys so they go to the field fighting for every ball. AVB is very young and probably can’t display enough authority, that maybe is a real problem. Losing a game, even an away game, should not even enter their minds, but it’s not what’s happening apparently.
Players should be picked on merit. Simple as that. And right now Terry doesn’t merit a place in the squad. I sometimes feel that his high profile status always affects Chelsea. Now how the hell do you drop him. The media furore around Stamford bridge will be too much. Thats where the likes of Sir Alex do a good job as they never let anybody get bigger than the club. Rio’s armband was taken away as soon as it was clear he won’t be a regular starter. no shitstorm there. Even Mancini has handled the Tevez situation very well. Asserting his authority and giving the armband to a young and in form player. Even if we want to we keep Terry on the sidelines just because of the shitstorm it would create. And if god-forbid he was to come out and say something, it would be taken out of context and would create headlines. Its a very bad situation.
The fortress was a fortress at Grants era as it was at JM era!!!!!
Don’t forget it!!!!
Don’t hide it!!!!
And don’t lie about it
Blame yourself and your kind the spoiled fans who asked his head and now are after another one
The day you sent Avram Grant away and the way you did it is the day history will show
As Your first step to the back pages of glory to the depth of the depth of football
At chelsea its all about image, wear overcoats and look good, show off on the sidelines, they’ll love you.
Old and unimpressive to look at??
Nobody cares for you for too long, they just wait for one blip and they’re on top of you.
Are you serious…Avram Grant?! I wasnt happy that Carlo was sent off after just one bad season, and would be strongly against firing AVB now, but Grant was a temporary figure from the start and even he knew that and still appriciated opportunity, so there is no hard feelings. He didnt do as bad a job as many have claimed though.
CONSIDER IT A DONE DEAL–> Eden Hazard The 20-year-old Belgian midfielder has attracted attention from all over Europe, his excellent displays helping his team to the Ligue 1 title in 2010-11, and Michel Seydoux admits he will be sold if his valuation is met.
“The price is €50m and this is clear in advance,” the Lille president told the press.
We should seriously buy him. Imagine this line up
————————–Cavani/DD(I dont consider Torres as a contributing member of the team)——————
——-Hazard/Mata———————————Sturridge/Lavezzi
———————–Lampard/Hamsik——————-
To me this is the best line up. Lets get rid of the the has beens: Malouda, Anelka,, Benyayoun, Bosingwa, Ross Turnbull.
Let’s all be honest about expectations for this year :
MINE ARE :
1. a top four spot ( would not that be exciting in a way we have not experienced in quite a while ? )
2. a quirky run in the Champions league …. who knows .. even Liverfool won it somehow when their domestic form was shite..
3. Blooding the youngsters in the Carling or FA….
4. Preparing the team / dressing room for the future : stop pretending it’s gonna be vintage year… and treat it as part of a cycle…be open …. for the good of the team… for the fans… and for future glory !
I don’t think we will get Cavani. Unfortunately Citeh will probably get him. They can offer him Champo league and bottomless pits of cash. I know this a bit rich coming from a Chelsea fan
but still, Citeh is a much better proposition for overseas players. Also Why should we go for Cavani anyways. Whats the guarentee he won’t turn out like Torres ?? I don’t want Chelsea to go for hyped players, paying over the odds. What is are scouting team doing. My 10 year nephew can tell how good Cavani is is. Why don’t we unearth the next Cavani ?? The next Lamps (younger one please ) ?? The next Terry ?? Where are they ??
bluebrother,
Well thats exactly the F’n problem with Chelsea. Look what happened when we bought “The Next Drogba” he is rotting in the reserves while we are struggling for scoring. The difference between Chelsea and other teams is that we don’t use our youth instead we like to buy washed up has beens. Kaka is next on the list by the way, according to dailymail……
@Xerxesk
That is because we go for hyped players. Now I don’t know how much influence does Roman hold over our transfers but our tranfer policy is not good. I am particularly piqued with the Torres transfer, I know and hope he comes good. But there is no way he is 50 mill. He should never have been bought for that price. Now this price tag will hang over his head. Just look at Berbatov, despite him being joint top scorer last year, United is still ridiculed for buying him for so much. I am sorry to say, but when you come for 50 mill, you are expected to hit the ground running. Cant have your cake and eat it too. If he doesn’t start scoring he will be the poster boy for Chelsea’s bad dealings in the transfer market. Now i hear people saying that the system chelsea plays doesnt suit him, then why buy him. I refuse to believe that for 50 mill there wasn’t a better option in and around Europe, forget the reserves for a moment. This isn’t about one player, John obi mikel is another example of a hyped up player brought in and then not used properly and have him ruined. Those kids we bought from Leeds are another example. Our transfer policy needs to change, and wuick if we are to remain competitive at the top.
Xersesk
We have a lot of arrogance to make such statements indeed…kaka is far from washed up anyway I rather doubt he would be interested in such a deteriorating club as ours, Milan, inter, juve would snip him tomorrow, far far bigger clubs than us.
This is the exact attitude that has led us here, had we been more modest, looked to make good deals we would have been stable. Instead we believed our own hype bidding crazy money left right and center.
Always talking as if we are a European superpower, get back to basics, back to square one and start running this club like a club not a circus.
joeblue,
I think if a club can spend the best part of 7/8 years competing against and generally beating the biggest clubs in Europe, and can boast a squad of players generally considered some of the greatest of their generation, then they have a legitimate claim to being called a ‘European Powerhouse’.
Now we’re actually at that stage I agree there’s no need to be so obtuse with our transfers and obviously paying obscene amounts because of a players name is never a good idea. But if whom the club decide is the best player for our current system will cost £30/40m then that’s still what we should pay. If millions are available then there’s no point being conservative for the sake of it.
Xersesk
We WERE a European power, do we have the personnel or quality to compete with the big boys?? No way. We had 7-8 good years(not great mind you), nottingham forest had such a spell, they aint a European power anymore.
The big clubs are so because they have sustained that sucess for decades. We cannot do so with our current planning.
As for the money, I believe we should have a proper budget and invest it accordingly 15-18 quid for a mikel, 18 quid for a guy who has absolutely zero ball control(you know who he is). Lets stop with the hype look how a redknapp does it, 8mn for vaart, now thats daylight robbery.
I dont say never pay big, but all the deals we do, teams are making us a dunce all over the world.
Sorry the below response was for ronin.
joeblue,
You’re absolutely right that the way Chelsea is being run as a club is not indicative of a great European side with class and experience of long-term success, but I really think you’re underestimating Chelsea as a brand. We have a huge fan base, bigger than Inter or Liverpool or any club in Portugal, or France or the Netherlands, and this is based on statistics I find online even before the Abramovich era. We also have a massive online fan-community, aside from this blog I’m a member of at least 10 other forums with fans from Korea, Israel, Bangladesh, Columbia etc. My point being the difference between us and Spurs and us and the Forest team of the 70’s is that we are simply far too big to deteriorate into mediocrity, just like the Madrid and Milan teams that were so average not so long ago. I know we’re not quite at that stage yet, but I don’t think we’re that far off.
Also if you consider how nonchalant we are about the £55m Madrid spent on Kaka and the £45m Barca spent on Ibrahimovic, I think we can assume we make a far bigger deal out of our transfer failings than anyone else does.
Guys, everybody deserves a voice on this blog, but what’s the point of spreading this doom and gloom? We know we are in trouble and all feel the pain, there is no need to repeat that we are s..t 100 times. Amount of negative comments here is staggering and it feels like fineral.
Do you have anything constructive to suggest? anything positive to share about our club? this is the ripe time to do it.
Ronin
While Madrid spend 55 on kaka they also get an ozil for 12, what did they buy higuain for?? Peanuts.sneijder, vaart, Sahin, Di Maria, hell they even conned us for robben.
While we all know barca are making brilliant youngsters like factory products.
Comparatively where are our bargains?? We spend crazy money on EVERY player.
Regarding the fan base, Leeds thought they were too big to go down, let me give you a scenario thats very possible: we end the season in europa league places, fairplay rules come in and we cant spend big anymore, the big stadium clubs buy better players, while we are struggling to pay the wages of our superstars remember no new stadium in sight, the good ones will be sooner or later taken by the big boys. We will become a midtable club, its not that impossible and unreal as you believe. Our fan base cant save us, arent some of our ‘fans’ the same guys who declined the club moving to a new bigger stadium and publicly embarrassed, our magnanimous owner?? Or the same ‘fans’ who were boycotting champions league matches despite the fact that this was the first time chelsea had increased the ticket price in five years. Moreover they complain about the ones in the stadium as not as supportive as stoke or bolton or spurs fans.
Dont put your faith in something that might let you down, and be prepared, for things are gonna get very rough at chelsea, no point denying it, no point ignoring it.
Joeblue
I couldn’t agree with you more.
finally a win and thanks AVB, Mikel was benched.. Mikel should start only in Carling cups.
Woah! Too much gloom!
We are absolutely fine. Yes, this season has not started well. And that’s about it. I don’t understand this thing about Chelsea not being run like a European club and all that. We are quite fine. Yes we bought players at very expensive prices. You know what, that’s the premium you pay for not being in the elite league such as the Madrids, Barcas and Milans. If you’re Real Madrid or Barca, you have players waiting in queue to play for you and that affects the price. Plus, with the Spanish players and Brazilian players that we’ve bought Chelsea as a brand is certainly growing in new areas. The ONLY negative that I see is that we are unable to move to a bigger stadium now. But anyway, I think it’s only a matter of time before a conclusion is reached.
In terms of future outlook (just so we don’t talk about their trophy cabinet) Liverpool is in dire straits – 40k seater stadium and no plans for a bigger stadium, still unstable ownership, no star player would want to join them – now that’s doom. In contrast, we have plans for a new stadium, we have very stable ownership, we are slowly becoming self-sustained and we’ve got a new young manager. In the life of a club, yes there would be few seasons outside of champions league – like Liverpool, Milan, Juventus – but doesn’t mean the club or the way it’s run will have to be ridiculed. In the bigger scheme of things, In the last 8 years, Chelsea has certainly achieved much more than expectations – in terms of success, financial stability, global presence. To call this a circus is rather naive and narrow.
BC
Not a month back you were talking of avb celebrating at the end of the season, and now its okay to not qualify for the CL??
Talking of juventus and Milan were they spending record deals in every window?? We spend 23 mn for a defender, 50 mn on a forward to qualify for the CL??
ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!
Joeblue
What makes you think that I’m okay for not qualifying for the CL? I NEVER SAID THAT!!! This is what I said:
“In the life of a club, yes there would be few seasons outside of champions league – like Liverpool, Milan, Juventus – but doesn’t mean the club or the way it’s run will have to be ridiculed”
No twisting please.
You said Chelsea would end up in the mid-table and I said that happens to many big clubs. You’re right – Juve and Milan didn’t spend big recently (the Milan clubs spent about a billion pounds in the 90s between them – so they are indeed a bad example purely from a spending point of view). The very point is, they don’t have to. While teams like Chelsea and Man City have to. Chelsea are playing catch up in the european football scene.
Okay we have spent big now, but we arent catching up are we?? Instead of winning champions league titles and league championships we are getting worse every season, you catch up like united did to Liverpool, not by winning 1 league title in 5 years and worse maybe europa league from next season.
Honestly speaking answer this: in what way has chelsea gotten better than at the start of Romans takeover??
BC and JB…
Fist of all great to see BC .. and JB.. woah!!.. u know your comments remind me about those doomsday soothsayers in movies or storybooks… who start and end every sentence with “oooooo…..the world’s gonna end”… and about this one common dialogue from all the harry potter movies .. “terrible things are about to happen”… (we are watching harry potter .. isnt that terrible enuf)… neway… lighten up dude.. you have already seemed to written the eulogy of Chelsea FC. Kinda premature i think.
What i am trying to say is winning is a habit, so is losing. It takes a lot to trust a player’s/mangaer’s/team’s ability, but not so long to lose it. There have been 3 outta 4 games we’ve lost in the PL. lost to Leverkusen. But now we’ve won against Wolves and we just need to continue this habit. BTW, i wudn’t count the win against blackburn as a win.. tht was a gift from them to us. As for now, we simply have to throw our expectations for 3/4 posn or UCL outta the window… and get past L’pool in the carling cup and valencia in UCL. After that may be we can all get together to talk something about our prospects for the season. And frankly, JB, Bro.. I have seen you on this blog for so many months now and i know u r a true blues fan..no offense.. but i haven’t heard a single positive thing from you about this club all this while..
all this talk about us paying ridiculous prices for players, and we ending up as a mid-table club once the FFP rules are applied.. jus coz we wud be financially restricted… i have jus one question for you.. dont you think the management which has such loads of experience of managing a club would know this…? So do chill out.. m sure there wud be some plan or the other to ensure financial stability and to stay among the top european clubs with top players at the same time…there are talks going for a new site for the stadium, lotsa young talents in the first team/reserve .. a young manager who has been publicly appreciated by so many stalwarts in the business… an incredible owner… we are no madrid or barcs.. but r way better off than many other clubs who are in contention to win titles..
@BC… hey.. do let us know if you are gonna be away for long periods of time.. wud catch up with on twitter… and
““In the life of a club, yes there would be few seasons outside of champions league – like Liverpool, Milan, Juventus – but doesn’t mean the club or the way it’s run will have to be ridiculed”
No twisting please.”
LOL… the last line seemed to be like that of a politician…
…there is fine line between sayin and it and implyin it.. isnt it..?
Keep posting when you get time BC!!!
Here we go!
Finances: Back in 03-04, we were totally reliant on Roman. In fact, he was the saviour. Now, our finances have been improving and he has become more of a pure owner instead of also being a big lender. Our ability to operate financially independent is not too far away. We are now talking about moving to a new stadium because the Chelsea model has worked and shows promise for bigger investment like a new stadium.
Fanbase: Compare the fans and supporters between 2003 and 2011. Chelsea now have huge fan base in places like Asia and Africa – probably the massive untapped markets for european football clubs. Huge increase in the fan base and consequently the revenues through merchandise. Wider fan base also means huge revenue potential for the future.
In the big league: We are spoken alongside the likes of Man Utd, Milans, Juve, Madrid, Bayern and Barca as a top club. In 2003, we were not. If you are not influenced by the recent form, you’d agree that Chelsea are right in the mix with the top European clubs consistently. In 2003-04, we were not even in the G-14. In 2008, we were the founding member of ECA.
Ability to attract top players/managers: Our chances of landing the top players and managers have undoubtedly increased. Man City are able to do this in their first few seasons itself because Chelsea were the pioneers and now Man City are benefitted because people see the Chelsea model working.
Success: 3 league titles in 8 years. Plus a champions league final and some semi final finishes. And some domestic trophies. Back in 2003-04, Chelsea were a club with a lot of promise thanks to the new owner. Now Chelsea are not a promise. They are a proven business model which is being aped by many other clubs.
Joeblue – I see your frustration with the team. But I’d say that your opinions on the team are clouding over your judgments on the club. As a club, Chelsea FC is on the right track. As a football team, Chelsea FC is going through a tough phase. You think this phase will last forever and we might end in mid-table. I’m saying we will improve and be back on track. These are two opposite beliefs. Future is unpredictable. If we still predict it correctly, it’s down to luck. So, if my belief comes true, I won’t say ‘I told you so’.
kaz,
Thank you mate! Life’s been very busy – at home and at work. At home, my son’s arrival has changed my lifestyle. At office, new roles and responsibilities have kept me occupied longer than normal. Hence, lack of quality time for the blog. Should settle down quickly. I think same time last year, I went through a similar phase and went light on the blog and picked it back up in January. Let’s see!
Kaz
Sorry mate but a very strange response indeed, I wont go to a debate to say ‘hey everything seems great, I’ll let myself out’ blogs are MEANT for discussions and debates not for agreeing like a herd of sheep. I am sorry but I am an English majors student and doing law, this cattle like mentality dosent come naturally to, me never has, never will. If one thinks everything at the club is hunkey-dory then its foolish to even comment.
BC
I have been around the blog a long time and have had my fair share of right ‘predictions’ so quite obviously you would call it luck.
joeblue,
There may be some problems with Chelsea at the minute, and you may be right that some issues may be a bigger cause for concern than the rest of us realise, but stripped down to the bare bones we all know that Chelsea is an institution with a financial set up, fanbase and supply of talent that isn’t the envy of very few other clubs in the world.
What I can infer from your posts is that you set an extremely high standard for Chelsea and expect excellence in all aspects, but then you down play any positives to the point where it reads like you don’t take any joy in being a Chelsea supporter at all, which obviously isn’t true otherwise you wouldn’t be a part of these blogs.
To recognise where the club is exceeding or to praise their efforts doesn’t make you a blind follower of consensus. These blogs might be about debate and discussion but they’re also for people to share enthusiasm and pride over a common interest. I wont think less of you for joining in.
Ronin
Agreed that perhaps I dont display enthusiam and passion like you guys, but its different for me I would take on every opponent supporter in the world if they point out the very faults at chelsea that I do. Much like a manager its all great for the outsider but when we sit down with our own guys we dont congratulate ourselves, we keep looking at how to improve and get better than the best. Thats all I want for chelsea, hell it wouldnt please me less than any fan if avb becomes a legend or torres grabs the golden boot. I would defend torres against all of my Liverpool supporting family, but only with a chelsea fan can I share whats wrong.
Real support aint sitting with a dozen chelsea fans drinking beer and saying how you felt about this and that, its about being among a room full of rival supporters and have the balls to rip them and their clubs to shreds if they say one word against any part of chelsea. I am the guy who will kick you back up when you give up and fall down, I will plot winning the premier league again the day after we would have. And I wont even mind being hated for it.
So guys its nothing personal.
Peace everyone!
Thats Joeblue for you. Hell, how I miss Vinton Lando here. Two most eccentric people in the blog. Read all the comments from others too and couldn’t disagree one bit. Well that makes it a good healthy debate which could only be conclusive on hindsight.
Good weekend for Chelsea. Congratulations to BC too, on becoming a proud father. Well I see you are already recruiting new members to keep the blog alive
Congrats BC
Been away from the blog for farrrr too long ! How’s everybody doing ?
I personally agree with JoeBlue when he says that this blog gives us fans a good platform to debate the negatives of the club, the things that we can improve on (and the occasional banter against shitty rivals =D). We aren’t in the best of forms when we look back at previous seasons so to sense an air of doubt within fan blogs wouldn’t be a surprise. Fifth place and having to wait till the final game of the Champions League group stage would be something I would never have imagined we’d get into 2 or 3 seasons ago.
However, that was 2 or 3 seasons ago. We’ve had a considerable change in personnel since then, with the loss of key players and certain managers. I do agree with BC that this is a time of transition for the club, where we’re trying to adapt to a new system, integrate certain young players into the side and also keep within the Financial Fair Play rules (this is the job of the Club, not the team, however). I’m willing to give AVB a couple of seasons till he can work his magic, not that I mean I’d understand us having a catastrophic season this year ! (We need to post a decent challenge in the Champions League and keep within the top two spots for the Premiership, and aim to win the FA Cup and Carling Cup along the way) Like AVB says, this win against Wolves might just give us impetus to push on for more victories and turn the packed Winter fixture list in our favour (More games = more chances of winning = increased pressure on opponents = rise in table position/advancement in cups).
The only thing I’m worried about is our lack of variability when it comes to defending. Our attacks have become more unpredictable and fluent, but we’ve somehow abandoned the importance of a tight defence and just relied on a high back-line to catch the opposition offside (I don’t think our CBs are quick enough to stop counter-attacks when this fails). I hope AVB loses his stubbornness in this aspect and makes us a solid defensive unit again !
KTBFFH !!
What happened to WXWAX? He had a lot of good posts and comments but seems to have gone missing.
Some good news….

chelsito,
Is this true? Would be a really good news if true. Will plug Malouda hole….

Is this true? Would be a really good news if true. Will plug Malouda hole….
For the carling cup we should play:
——–Hilario———–
Ferreira——alex——–Luiz——Bosingwa
kalou————-Mikel——-Josh——-malouda
——————-Anelka———-Lukaku——–
The following video is a proof that AVB has been wasting time by playing Mikel:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6eZirYSwZM
On a side note both Mikel and Lampard should be dropped from the regular squad. Success needs sacrifices.
marks,
I have got no other proof to back it up, but just feel this one is true. I agree with you on long term replacement of Malouda.
On Romeu, I simply can’t enjoy his good play as against our other youngsters for who knows we might see him play for the catalans next season as he is already catching more eyeballs. And to top it we are also considering a similar buyback signing for another la masia grad Sergi Roberto.
Marcel Desailly is at it again, after Didier Drogba refused to pen a new contract, Marcel was interviewed on his opinion and according to him AVB is ruining the club and forming cliques within the camp, where players are feeling depressed and isolated. Im sorry Marcel but haven’t you been saying that for the past 3 years, About Carlo and now AVB. I swear that guy is the worst Chelsea representative out there, nothing good ever comes out of his mouth about the blues, NOTHING …
Jaz,
I agree. I don’t see why this guy is so against the way the club is run. You don’t hear legends from other clubs such as United, Liverpool, Arsenal talking $h!t against their respective former employers ! Very odd guy…
KTBFFH !!
Chelsea star Didier Drogba will leave as a free agent in the summer, according to the striker’s agent Thierno Seydi.
Seydi has also revealed Drogba will “go where he is offered the most money” as he has “nothing left to prove as a player”.
The Ivory Coast striker has been offered a new deal at Stamford Bridge but Drogba has rejected the contract and is looking at his options.
The veteran frontman joined the Blues in 2004 but is ready to turn his back on top-level European football and head to either the US, Russia or Asia in order to secure a lucrative contract.
“Didier has had the offer of a one-year extension from Chelsea. That does not suit us. We know what we want, where we want to go and what offers we have,” Seydi told the Sun.
“Milan came in for Didier on loan with an option to buy but I said ‘No’ straight away. Their offer did not interest us.
“At Didier’s age, he has nothing left to prove as a player. He will go where he is offered the most money. It could be the United States, Russia, Qatar or somewhere else in Asia. Once you are well into your 30s you have to go to a club where you can be certain you’ll be able to pay your bills.
“LA Galaxy are a possibility among many others. He has been linked with Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia, as they pay well. But neither Didier nor I have had an offer from them.”
so now we see as suspected.. Drog has no more drive to play …. and the half hearted play… i say buy Cavanni or Barrios or Higuain or Falcao… simple.. we are a big club and we need big strikers.. if u dont score.. sit on the bench.
basically we might lose Anelka in January.. Drog in Summer… that leave us with 2.5 strikers (kalou being the half.. im not counting lukaku yet… Chelsea has a lot of work to do.. trust me
Nameless_Member,
you SIR are most correct!!!! i have been saying that for a long time now.. these two men .. (lamps and mikel) make our middle look like shit… and my view is both should not play at the same time…. personally i only have space for one.. mikel has to go… lamps for super sub role.
I say replace lamps with Gotze and Illicic. replace mikel with Guarin… he would kinda replace essien too.
Romeu to get more games…@@
In my opinion Drogba deserves to leave and have one final big pay day, he’s done his bit for Chelsea and in all honesty probaby has nothing left to offer us on a weekly basis. I dont feel the same about Lampard however, I think he can and deserves to stay at Chelsea as long as he wants because we know no matter what form he is in, he’s always gonna be good for 10 – 15 goals a season and to put the penalties away. I agree with @Nameless Member though he shouldnt be automatically in the starting XI any longer along with Mikel Obi , at the minute I think Ramires, Romeu and Meireles all warant a place more.
Fernando Torres is utter garbage. Shame on all of you who says otherwise. Overall we couldn’t score against a secondary Liverpool defense at home. I fear for our team.
Xerxesk,
Torres is not utter garbage, anybody who has seen him turn Vidic inside out would know that. The current situation we have put him in is utter garbage. He shoudn’t have been bought, not for 50 mill at all. He obviously doesn’t perform well under pressure and due to the current situation (starting to feel like Carlo’s moment) he is being subjected to too much scrutiny. Its a vicious cycle. He needs a runout and a few games without pressure but it just cannot happen anymore. We are losing matches and we bought this guy for 50 mill. He is expected to hit the ground running.
Also whilst it is good to point out the problems, donot despair is what Id tell the other fans. We’ve seen much worse before. There are issues right now but which club doesn’t have issues. It simperative that fans have a say in matters directly pertaining to the club and its well being in the future. Till then KTBFFH !!!
Lukaku is raw! I am worried about McEachran’s injury!
KarmaCW,
you should worry about our defense rather then a reserve player. I don’t know what happened to Alex, he was great. Our only reliable defender is Ivanovic.
I am not worrying about a reserve player, i am worried about a bright and great player who have wrongly been kept in the reserves! We have 3 reliable defenders in Ivanovic, Ashley and Bertrand but sadly we can play only either A Cole or Bertrand.
Last Night’s game proved we cannot beat any team that will play against us with no fear, Liverpool have now recorded 4 back to back victories against us, scoring 7 and conceding just the 1. This team is playing with a mental block at the moment and as long as that block is not lifted the gloom will continue. I said at the beginning of the season I would be happy if we finish top 4 as long as the team is moving in the right direction. I’m still confident that we will qualify for Champions League, but AVB in my opinion has some learning to do, I’m not calling for his head, far far from it, but his inexperience is starting to show.
KTBFFH …
We need a better transfer policy. There is something wrong with the personnel. Looking at each players individually I cannot see anything but quality. But when they play together it just doesnt gel. Having quality players is not enough, having the right players in the right frame of mind is what is needed the most. AVB needs to be given time. He is right their is no point wasting money on another manager right now. If we need to be self-sustaining we need to cut our losses. And every penny paid everywhere counts. Be it on players or managers. Till now the only money wisely spent (giving us happiness) has been the money spent on Eva Carneiro.
Just let it be known, once again, AVB has 3 years and financial backing just like a bloke with a red nose had a couple decades ago.
People blame AVB but just listen…
AVB has the EXACT same philosophy as Guardiola.
Chelsea ever since 2004 have been used to standing off, deep defending, man marking, direct passing and counter attacking. Over the years Chelsea has become extremely predictable and easy to beat. They have lost pace and the killer instinct. They have even lost the champions’ desire, something very important if you are going to win something. It’s the reason why big clubs can beat big clubs, they simply want it more.
Barcelona since the days of Johan Cruyff as a player and later a manager have been used to pressing, high defending, zonal marking, short passing, controlling the game, interchanging of positions, movement off the ball and have ALWAYS had that #10 who was able to pick out those players who were ALWAYS on the move. Weather is be Cruyff, Maradona, Rivaldo, Figo, Ronaldinho or Messi.
So here is a question for you. If Rinus Michels was alive and here, Cruyff was here or Guardiola was here would be do any different with this current squad?
The ability to move off the ball is quite simple to acquire. It simply takes common sense that if I (Lampard) pass the ball to a player down the left channel, I will move into space so I can receive the ball again OR cover the space left by the player if he decides to run at the defence.
The ability to press and position yourself also is quite simple to acquire (Real Madrid and Man City acquired it over the summer), however stamina and teamwork are extremely essential. This is where the collective effort comes into play but we will also here about that later.
High defending is something that has a major PRO but a massive CON. Attacking play benefits greatly due to quicker distribution while the opponent’s lines are broken (basically high defending’s version of deep defending’s long ball). However, the lines of this defence are the easiest to be broken and life is made even easier if the two wingbacks are nowhere to be found, the DMC is left in the centre, LCB on the left covering and the RCB on the right. A simple one-two with some pace could be dangerous (Arsenal know EXACTLY what I am talking about). I can guarantee you Valencia will use Hernandez and Soldado to exploit that. This high defending also requires CB with high levels of anticipation, tackling, composure (Luiz’s enemy) and pace (Terry’s enemy). Combine this with a partnership developed by playing together like this CONSISTENTLY (AVB’s appeasement (thank you to joeblue) style of rotation comes into play here).
Zonal Marking TAKES A LOT of time to actually start working the way you want it too. It is combined best when the team presses the other to death. Does Chelsea do that? Defending set pieces WILL be your enemy even if this marking has been learnt well or not.
Interchanging of postions… common sense (just like movement off the ball).
Short passing and controlling the game. Pressing the opponent to death to win the ball = more possession and attacking threat. Zonal Marking = better pressing. Movement off the ball = better zonal marking. Short passing = more possession, less energy used, no defensive worries.
As you can see, our preseason has been worthless as the only thing we have changed was the high defence and zonal marking.
How about talking a little (I meant that this time) about the Transfer/Selection Policy and Staff of Chelsea FC?
At Chelsea FC, if you want a certain player, you don’t get him OR you get him but you get him about 5 years later after he has become dried up. Shevchencko or Torres anyone?
At Chelsea, the reputation of a player is what gets you a place in the starting eleven. Form IS NOT important at this club. Drogba or Essien anyone?
At Chelsea, the medical staff takes 6 months to spot something and are usually 6 months off with their predictions of how long a player might be out. Benayoun or Drogba anyone?
And finally…
CHELSEA FOOTBALL CLUB NEEDED AN OVERHAUL OF PERSONNEL SINCE THE END OF THE 2007/2008 SEASON.
Why oh why is that so hard to realise. We keep sacking managers who really can’t do much with this squad.
At Chelsea, Terry, Lampard and Drogba have more power than the manager, regardless to what they say.
All I can tell you fans. Live with coming 3rd and 4th for a while, while AVB rebuilds the squad with the financial backing Roman HAS promised him in those 3 years Roman HAS promised him to do so.
While we are at it let’s talk about the players we have missed over the years.
Eto’o
Rooney
Di Maria
Ozil
Gervinho
Arshavin
Silva
Aguero
van der Vaart
Khedira
Coentrao
Savic
Varane
Sanchez
Jones
Villa
Ribery
and one thing that kills me… WE SOLD ARJEN ROBBEN AND BOUGHT SOLOMON KALOU! WHAT IN THE ….
BC,
Maybe it is time for us to look a long way down the line( stabilty and change in approach). If AVB is the real guy who is in the hotseat for making the transition, then we should all put our opinions on whether the transition will enable a way forward and also how effective it would be!!
Those who say that it will take time for the same to happen do wonder if the change is for the good!
Good read

results.and it matters. it only matters. isn’t that simple ? lol ; -)
I like AVB as a coach , but not for chelsea. Perhaps for someother club. My innocent and tender mind , quielty wonders, how the characteristics of AVB and the club are aligned. Isn’t that a glaring contradiction ?
Prithvi,
Clubs dont have characteristics but teams do, and teams have to evolve and adapt over time. Treymanne Craigg pointed out exactly what is wrong with this team at the minute and I agree that when it does evolve it should be in the form of Andre’s visions and constucted under his philosphies.
I Like AVB as a coach as well, for a lot of reasons. From what I’ve seen and read he’s clearly a diligent, perceptive, humble and hard-working man, who’s principled without being stubborn and independant without being reclusive. He may not be the right man to take this current squad to success (I personally dont think anyone can, including Hiddink) but in a period where a lot of things have to and are going to change, he’s exactly the kind of person and mind I’d want running my club.
And people may criticise his appointment but you don’t get a job managing a club like Chelsea in your early thirties by fluke or if you’re not exeptional at what you do.
Tremayne Craigg has rightly pointed out to problems within the club.
Because of the player hierarchy at the club we didn’t invest in youngsters (include them in the regular squad) on time. Even now when it’s obvious that we lack young creative players we buy Meireles and keep playing Lampard. Personally I consider it ridiculous to play youngsters from one Carling cup game to another when inbetween there’s a whole month. Maybe that’s the reason why McEachran was injured. You have to play them regularly…the more often you play them the shorter is a transition period of the team. We kept posponing that process and now when our squad has reached its limit of “depreciation” we ask naive questions like “how can our quality players who won the league 2 years ago can struggle like this?” Besides, on emergency situations we kept buying overrated players on decline. In my opinion nobody will be able to drop Terry, Lampard, Cole and Malouda from the regular squad for at least one more year untill the winter 2012/13 which means our transition period will be postponed even longer and our problems will continue.
Amazing how peaceful you can be if you lower expectations a bit…. at least for this year … and maybe next…..
Personally … I feel that lots of things have to fall in place for something to come about .. but as long as it’s a top four finish… a crazy run in CL and excitement in the matches…this year ……and a rebuild soon… I guess we can’t hope for more…..
Now it’s up to some to prove me wrong
From being a “prodigal manager”, AVB has now been described by some as “Jose Mourinho’s DVD guy”. The English media are plain useless. Make a hero out of someone and then watch him crash and burn just as easily when things do not go right. Utter disgrace.
KTBFFH !!
Many Chelsea fans and the people in the club’s board for a long time were failing to realize that the problem with the team is in its old players who created a hierarchy inside the dressing-room. AVB either cannot realize it or just scared to intervene. The aforementioned truth is finally uttered by a man who occupied a hot-seat AVB is sitting now, which means nobody can deny it now without the risk of being labeled as a fool. Here are words of wisdom from Ancelotti:
http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Chelsea-Blame-old-players-not-Andre-Villas-Boas-for-bad-results-says-ex-manager-Carlo-Ancelotti-article836801.html
Scolari complained of player hierarchy at chelsea but of course hes a fool, what wld he know. Now ancelotti, its not really surprising is it, imagine if drogba gave such insipid performances for more than a year at barca/real etc or lampard walking in the park or terry always on his backside these days.
Guys, The new Chelsea is going through labour pains. If we do get it right, we will be an absolute terrific team to watch. It will take time. Part of the reason we have less technically gifted players is Frank Arnesen. He was the chief recruiter. He opted for Big Burly players. Did anyone hear we wanted Fellaini? How would Fellaini ever help us play a fluid game in the midfield.
Our problem is simple, we dont show desire in our matches. In all our matches against the big teams it’s looked like we dont want it enough. I’ve written before on this. We are being bullied in matches. It’s not because our players are no good. They are, but being good is not enough. You have to have the attitude to win. We seem to give up easily. Even a huge man like Alex looks timid and fidgity or all the time. Same applies to Ivanovic, Mikel, Bosingwa and even Ashley Cole. Lampard keeps lumbering in midfield and scores the odd goal for his self-praise.
Our opponents know if you play hard against Chelsea, if you get in their faces, they cant play. That’s why Liverpool have beaten us lately. They hound us. They work harder than us. Not play better. Andre should know it’s not tactics but our attitude to matches that is costing us games. Defenders ducking out of challenges like Ash and Bosingwa. Midfield not pressing enough, even though our new system is based on pressing the opposition even their keepers. That is why i fear for the Newcastle game. Cos Newcastle are all about hardwork and commitment. If we dont match that, trust me we wont win that match. KTBFFH
Latunvic good ideas…
We are suffering because we didnt clear deadwood in summer. we can cash in on drigba and anelka but if we do that .. we MUST go for Cavanni/Falcoa or Higuain.
i think realistically we can go for:
Montolivo, Illicic, cahill, Kevin will be bought and loaded back until summer.
I would luv to get Freddy guarin (porto) now or summer but i think we need him.
Gotze ( in the summer), Cavanni ( inn the summer) Gregory (in the summer)
Cech/Turnbull/(New Keeper)
Ivano/Gregory
Luiz/Terry/Cahill
Cole/Ryan
Romeu/Rammi/Montolivo/Raul/Guarin/Essien(if he recovers fro ACl injury)and Lampard
Gotze/Mata/Illicic/Josh/Kevin/Adam Johnson ( man city a long shot to buy)
Torres(has to prove himself)/Danny/Cavanni(falcao).
Formations: 4-2-3-1/4-3-3/4-1-3-2
Cech
Ivano- Luiz – Tery_ cole
–Monotolivo- Guarin–
Mata – Gotze – Illicic
——-Torres —–
NB: any player not seen are sold… Malouda, drogba, anelka, Mikel/Bosingwa, Alex, Paulo, Hilario. Kakuta.. Loan Lukaku, loan, kevin, Loan Josh …
Give me your reiews guys… I think we can recover some of the money buy selling players.. so basically it would be expensive… rebuild completed
Wow!!!!!
NICOLAS ANELKA and Alex have been banished from first-team training by Andre Villas-Boas.
The duo are no longer in the Chelsea manager’s plans and it is understood Brazilian centre-back Alex has put in a transfer request.
Anelka is expected to head to Russia in January and join Anzi Machakala.
But the rest of the Chelsea squad have been shocked at the manner in which the popular pair have been cast aside.
Both are now training with the reserves.
Getting rid of Anelka makes sense. He’ll go for free in the summer so at least we get a transfer fee this way. The decision to dump Alex is curious, however. We lose a lot of cover in the back without him. I sense Chelsea will go after another centerback in January now that they’ve deemed Alex expendable. Luiz is too dodgy and Ivanovic is too good out right.
The fact that AVB has accepted the transfer requests of Anelka and Alex seems really wise. Like RORS21 says, we can get a fee for the two if we sell em in January, and we get to buy replacement players that will fit the criteria that AVB’s philosophy demands. I have a feeling AVB is looking to get a fast CB who can recover quickly when the opposition can break our offside trap and start a quick counter. I don’t think he’ll be looking at Cahill since he is very error-prone and that’s not someone we want (especially with a similar Luiz in our line-up !). I think AVB will also offload Mikel or restrict his role in the team, and once we’ve gotten a CB replacement, he might play Luiz as a CDM (his ball skills, darting runs and through balls suggest he is apt for this role) which he will share with Romeu from time to time.
Anelka’s departure will SURELY lead to a replacement being brought in since January will mean we will lose Drogba and Kalou (Would AVB risk leaving the attack to FT9 and Sturridge alone ?)
The season isn’t over yet. I have a feeling January will bring quite a lot of freshness to the side that might lead to our title push, FA Cup and Champions League progress.
KTBFFH !!
God I hope we sign Jan Vertonghen to replace Alex. He is a beast.
Finally …
Somehow I have a bad feeling, we will be playing europa league

Andre Villas-Boas is under pressure
Bayer Leverkusen are through due to Chelsea and Valencia meeting on the final day, but top spot remains up for grabs. Leverkusen can secure this by winning away to Genk. If they do not beat Genk then any winner in the other tie would finish first with the German side runners-up.
Contrary to reports elsewhere, Chelsea are not guaranteed to qualify with a 0-0 draw. If Leverkusen lose in Belgium then Chelsea would be eliminated with any draw, including 0-0. This is because when three teams are level on points a mini-league is created without the games involving Genk. Leverkusen would finish top having secured one more point than their rivals. Valencia will finish above Chelsea by virtue of having scored one more goal than the London club, with both having five points and a goal difference of +1.
Chelsea can only finish second with a 0-0 draw if Leverkusen pick up points. A 1-1 draw would put Valencia through on goal difference and any other draw would put Valencia in the knockout rounds on head-to-head having scored more away goals.
————————————————————————————————
I think we’re getting bogged down way too much in the details of things. What happened to the good old days when if we needed to progress, we needed to win and nothing else ? I think we should see this game on Wednesday as a knock-out Cup tie rather than one that is based on mathematical calculations and predictions. A win is a win and that’ll get us through. I don’t think AVB will have done a good job if he tells this team to go out for a 0-0 draw at home (I think he wouldn’t do this anyway since I think he is a good coach).
I expect FT9 to start against Valencia because Drogba, despite scoring in weekend action, can not match up to the pace of Champions League football anymore. He is more reliant on power and muscle to get past defenders and would not be able to get at the end of, say, a through ball in a fast-paced game. FT9 still has more pace and can get behind defenders and if not, there is always Sturridge, who was a real menace on our right-hand side. Another NO – NO for the team should be Mikel, I think he should be offloaded sooner rather than later. Romeu or Mereiles should occupy that CDM role.
Our formation should be somewhat like this:
—————————————-Cech—————————————-
—D. Luiz—————-Ivanovic——————–John Terry—————A. Cole—
———————————–Romeu/Mereiles————————————
———————Ramires—————————Lampard———————–
—D. Sturridge————————–Torres——————————–J.Mata—
KTBFFH !!
Obviously there is very little upside to Chelsea not qualifying from their group, but playing in the Europa league this season I dont think would be the end of the world. It would be an oppurtunity for the likes of McEachran, Lukaku, Bertrand and also possibly any new younger signings to get experience in Europe and it would allow us to focus more on the premier league, and at the very least make sure we’re in the Champions League next season.
Dear BC…
I know U R very busy with work….But After game we don’t want full review of match…JUST WRITE TWO or THREE SENTENCE or just Headline is enough…Rest..comment will be filled by us.. …HOPE SOON U WILL START Updating this BLOG … Please check this link…its about SAM Hutchinson’s NEW CONTRACT @ Chelsea http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2068737/Sam-Hutchinson-signs-Chelsea-deal.html

I understand with your work & family commitment.
Maybe 4 d 2nd alternative, my i suggest your BC Blog Deputy to help u with the post?
Love d transfer news.
As long as we do not concede, i think we shall go through. I don’t see any chances of Leverkusen losing to Genk for sure. However the team selection should be spot-on. No Ashley Cole AND no Lampard.
No offense but there is nothing Cole adds to this team. Defensively he is awful & offensively, he completely has no idea.
At least something like this will get the result needed.

Ronin …
Playing and losing out in the champions league knockout stages would be better for these youngsters than Europa league. My point being that they must be given a chance. Plus what we saw from AVB the other day at Newcastle was tactical flexibility. The man’s a thinker. And he learns from his mistakes. Deserves a chance. Certainly.
But that doesn’t mean that the problems have vanished.
1.) Get Luiz sorted out. Or Sell. End of Discussion.
2.) Reinvent the spine of the team. Terry-Essien-Lampard-Drogba served us well. But we now need a new spine.
3.) Sell Torres till we can still fool people that he will come good.
4.) Buy a hungry, young striker and pair him along Daniel Stuirridge. No Barca buy-back kids. They should be chelsea through and through. I feel that if we donot achieve success in a few years then people might treat us as stepping stones for something better. See Liverpool and Arsenal. We need to create a culture around the club and assert that being a chelsea player is the end all and the only way out of Chelsea requires stepping down.
Did any of you guys watch Gab Marcotti on soccernet last night? Since Ancelotti left the club , Marcotti seems to be on a mission to bad-mouth the Club. Why is it so easy to take pot shots at Chelsea Football Club all the time. Why do all our ex-players, bar Poyet and Leboeuf, seem to delight in our demise all the time. (yes Craig Burley, you know you do). Seems every one is scared to back Chelsea Football Club cos it’s easy to stick the knife in.
we should seriously consider signing Marco Reus who has only a €17.5m fee release clause!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I also would love to see Roberto Soldado in Chelsea. He is a consistent and fine finisher.
bluebrother,
Obviously playing in the Champions League would be better experience for the younger players but of course they would never be selected so thats a futile argument really.
With regards to the issues you bought up, first of all I cant believe you’re buying into this casual monstering of David Luiz in the media – the man is incredible! A few errors shouldnt cloud how well he’s done so many times already, notably against Liverpool when Suarez didnt get a shot in for the whole game. Selling him would be ridiculous, we should sign him up for 8 years.
Secondly the spine of the team is well on its way to being reinvented, Drogba and Lampard are no longer guaranteed starters and that may well be the case for Essien when he returns. Every window in recent times has maked the average of our squad and XI younger and has taken less emphasis off of those players you listed.
Problem 3: Just no!
Finally with 4 I agree completely with what you say but I dont agree that its a problem. We have bought already players like Lukaku, Davila and Kakuta and continue to be linked with young forwards like Markovic and Vergas, which is evidence the clubs scouts are thinking along the same lines as we are and that Chelsea is still a hot destination for young talent.

Tonight’s game has got my nerves shredded really. Why? Well cos since Ze left, we’ve not faired well in high pressure matches. I fear our players are not mentally tough enough. I hope they prove me wrong tonight. STAMFORD BRIDGE STAND UP. Back the Blue Army. We Need You.
Hey , It was a good disciplined performance. This is how you should play even in the league. Be cautious and at the same time look for chances and utilize them. Each team has got a philosophy and nature of play which they are very good at. We must respect that. Todays game is chelsea’s game. We must take that as our trademark playing style.
Of late we were trying too many things and we were forgetting what we are good at. I am not against attacking free flowing football, but we must try to achieve by that by keeping our blueprint intact. When we try to attack and speed up the play with defenders , we are brutally getting disorganized. When we know that it is not our piece of cake ,just do what you best at just like in todays match: A No Nonsense vigilant defense. A decent midfield with a person to take control [Mata now and yesteryears it was Lampard] and strikers who has got chelsea qualities- Strength and speed. We always had speed and strength in Jose era. We had marauding Drogaba and we had the agile legs of robben, joe cole, duff etc.
Guys this is a benchmark performance that we should try to run at it week in and week out.
p.s: I have a word to some of members in our Chelsea family. Have your own opinion about your team. Do not look into what the papers say or some commentators. The way you become panic and criticize is not good for our family. Do it the jose way – Do not criticize and give up when you are losing . Do it when you are winning because it will help you to improve, Other way it will only help you to perish
I am goona take a stand against most of the people out here. I do not understand why everyone says struddinge is in deadly form. According to me this guys needs to learn a lot. In todays game he was pathetic and he was seen no where. When ever he got the ball he wasted without making those opportunities useful. Here everyone is after torres,Mikel,Lampard and they are overrating this guys perfomance. I simply do not buy that. Even against newcastle where he was considered exceptional,I found him pathetic. See he may be good player for an average EPL team but he is not good to be a chelsea striker as of now. I agree he scores goals and runs a lot but if you closely watch you can see how many chances he squander and how many opportunities he wastes to make a good game play. For me he is selfish , he does’nt have extra ordinary skills like drogba, anelka [on his day],torres. So please dont make him great an expect a lot from him.
My point is he is not even good as a form out torres [I am not a torres fan]. He is making most out of this situation .We dont expect anything from him and he is giving us mediocre performance which we and media exaggerates. Poor Torres – he is paying the price. I need to quote this before I stop.
Like Jose said about Ronadinho once : A form out torres and Drogba are better than most of the current chelsea strikers.

I seriously hope we dont sign Cahill, he is overhyped and overrated. Just because he is English it does not mean he is the best choice. Instead I think we should go for Jan Vertonghen, he is a complete defender and is fantastic at marking. Furthermore if we are to sell Kalou as well, lets go for Marco Reus as I mentioned earlier, he has only a €17.5m fee release clause. A similar player to Reus is André Schürrle, who is also a fantastic player and a great addition. Now if Drogba does not stay with us in the summer, which will break all the hearts of Chelsea fans/fingers crossed wont happen, we should look at Soldado and Cavani. Fernando Torr-shit is not cutting it. I would take Shevchenko over him any day.
I would fancy Basel in the next draw!
Guys.. I like in when AVB launches a scathing attack to butt-faced Neville..
He’s not even qualify to be a pundit.. what a shit
xerxesk,
I am wondering if with Torres we should just cut our losses and sell. I wish him to succeed but don’t see any progress in his play, unfortunately. What frustrates me is his constant moodiness. Even in the Valencia game he only played for a short time but looked very irritated from the start. We need mentally strong players and he is not, it seems.
marks,
Agreed
