Very simple question. Who should start for Chelsea in the big match on Sunday? No constraints. Full squad. One big match. I think Carlo has taken too much time and is yet to settle down on his first choice squad. He does seem to have a few dilemmas – especially in midfield and in attack.
Who should play in defence? I think this is made straight forward by the clarity around Ivanovic. Captain John Terry and aggressive David Luiz as centre backs. Ever-dependable Ivanovic and all-but-dead Ashley Cole as full backs. This is all quite simple unless we have our doubts about David Luiz having an incident-free match. I personally think that we should stick with him in central defence. There could be options of (a) swapping David Luiz and Ivanovic and (b) Alex playing and David Luiz in the bench. I think we need the pace and adventure of David Luiz. Remember, a draw is not of any use. We gotta win.
My choices: John Terry, David Luiz, Ashley Cole & Ivanovic.
Who should play in midfield? I’m looking at a 4-3-3, the formation that we’re most comfortable with. The options available are: Lampard, Essien, Ramires, Mikel, Josh, Zhirkov and Malouda. We continue to be lucky with injuries, for a team that’s mostly in late 20s and early 30s. Right now, all are available for selection.
Essien has been terrible most season. This is a season for him to forget. Not being effective is one but being detrimental is another. I’d drop Essien. I wrote in Jan 2011 that Essien should be dropped. Nothing’s changed the way I see it. Mikel has a fantastic job in defensive midfield. Most of us have observed that we play better football when Mikel plays. He does a better job of holding the ball and distributing for attack. Mikel doesn’t lose possession and initiative like the Essien of today. If Mikel gets a yellow, I’d bring in Josh. Call me whatever, I’d bring on Josh.
I’d pick Ramires and Lampard. Ramires over Essien because we need some pace. We’re playing away from home. We need some pace to quickly turn Man Utd attacks into Chelsea attacks. Essien doesn’t have that pace and in his current form, loses possession more often than not. When a midfielder does that against Man Utd, you’d expect Nani and Rooney to run riot. Lampard is in for me. Proven goalscorer is back among goals. He plays much better with Mikel behind him.
My choices: Ramires, Mikel & Lampard
Who should play in attack? The biggie! Carlo has a sweet problem here too. He has some really good attacking players most of them in good form. The options are, Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka, Florent Malouda, Zhirkov, Fernando Torres and Salomon Kalou.
I’d keep Malouda as he seems to have found his form. He’s played especially well against Man Utd before. His presence would stifle the Man Utd right back. I’d play Drogba on the right flank. He can give a nightmare to Evra but I don’t expect Drogba to run as well as an attacking Evra but that’s where Ramires the right midfielder comes in.
Leading the attack will be Fernando Torres. He’s playing very well. He’s scored his debut goal. Even though he didn’t score a goal in the last match, he was very bright and intelligent. He’s played hundreds of matches as a lone striker and he knows what it takes to be one. I only hope that as a team we play to Fernando Torres’ strengths. I can’t believe that even after 3 months since he joined we haven’t quite figured out how to play with him. Anyway, for me, he starts. Kalou comes on as a sub for Torres or Malouda depending on how things go. Drogba stays for all 90 minutes. Benayoun should definitely come in if we are trailing by half time. In any case, Yossi should play about 30 mins when Torres is also on the field.
My choices: Drogba, Malouda & Torres.
So, there’s my team:
(One and only) Petr Cech, Terry, Ivanovic, David Luiz, Ashley Cole, Mikel, Ramires, Lampard, Malouda, Drogba and Torres.
I’m 100% sure that this is not the team that Carlo would pick to start. If I can guess Carlo right, this could be the team: Cech, Alex, Terry, Ivanovic, Ashley Cole, Essien, Lampard, Mikel, Malouda, Drogba and Kalou.

Same team as started against Tottenham.
Essien versus Ramires is the only hard choice.
While we all agree Essien has been mostly dreadful this season, he actually had a solid game against Spurs. He held the ball well and was solid.
But Ramires does bring valuable pace. Frankly, if they gave Ramires the job of following Giggs all over the pitch and snuffing out his every move, Chelsea would win the game. Without Giggs, ManU seem to struggle offensively (Schalke notwithstanding.)
GK: Cech
RB: David Luiz
CB: Ivanovic
CB: Terry
LB: A.Cole
LAM: Lampard
CM: Obi Mikel
RAM: Ramires
LW: Malouda ( crying baby)
ST: Drogba
RW: Kalou
HT : Malouda Off
Torres On ( cuz vidic, not dat good at torres , by half time vidic will be half tired , torres can run on him)
*Torres Main Striker and Drogba On right flank
*David Luiz should play Right back cuz Ivanovic cant stop Nani n Fouls earns free kicks to manutd ,wic can be dangerous , If Luiz plays on RB Rooney chances of running into him to get fouls or spot kicks will be less !!!
U ar rite but we need essien he understand mikel much beta dan ramires
Ivanoic can’t play do ur home work
I prefer fernandoe torres and salomon kalou to start the clash againt manchester united on sunday at old trafford.
Ivanovic can play idiot, his tenth yellow card came after a deadline in April so he isn’t suspended. Team to start: Cech, Ivanovic, David Luiz, Terry, Cole, Essien, Mikel Obi, Lampard, Kalou, Drogba, Malouda.
Ivanovic isn’t eligible to play. In my opinion, the line up should be: Cech, Luiz, {right back}, Terry, Alex, Cole, Mikel, Lampard, Ramires, Kalou, Torres & Drogba. Formation: 4-3-3
I think Carlo would go for this: 4-3-3
……………….Cech………………
Ivano…..Luiz…….Terry…..A.Cole
………. Essien……Obi Mikel………
………………Lampard……………….
Kalou………………………..Malouda
………………Drogba………………….
But, i think wats been missing & has cost us a lot this season, is creativity from the midfield to create chances, put those thru balls,,, i am not in favour of playing 2 defensive minded players midfield,, wat we need is benayoun or even mceachran getting into the first team… there’s too much pressure on Lampard/Malouda to create chances… & Drogba & Kalou shud definitely start, they link well…. i guess Lampard, Malouda, Drogba’s performance will decide our fate of this season on sunday,,, all i want to hear is the commentator shouting DROGBA…!!!!!! when he scores KTBFFH!!! :)
Hey, please don’t doubt the capabilities essien, he in bad form is better than 90% of chelsea players, yes chelsea play better when mikel is in the middle, but forget that essien is not allowed to go deep lyk lamp, he drop back and support mikel.
I agree wth ur selection, anceloti should nt make a mistake of using alex, and essien pls, we nid wining
I think this should be our team:
Cech
Ivan – Luiz – Terry – Cole
Ramires – Mikel – Lampard
Kalou – Drogba – Malouda
We all know that Torres wont score. Carlo has already gambled a lot with Torres, you do remember the Champion League’s both legs against ManUtd dont you? It is impossible for Torres to score when Vidic, Ferdinand and VDS are playing. Drogba is a proven goal scorer against ManUtd and he will definitely start. I dont really think Malouda and Torres can work together, Malouda is always out to prove something which is the reason why he wont work with Torres well.
And David Luiz, he is a manchester killer, scored against United and City. He is a definite starting guy at the back. Mikel as a defensive Midfielder will allow our Mighty Lampard to move forward without any worries.
Did you watch BBC Match of the Day last Saturday? Good analysis from Alan Shearer on why Drogba positioned out on the right just doesn’t work for Chelsea. First, he was the one crossing the ball into the box most of the time when he should’ve been in there causing havoc and getting on the end of things. Second, Shearer showed a couple of clips of Drogba just giving up, not running into the box, etc. prior to Torres’s substitution. His body language was all wrong having been clearly neutered by his wide role. However, once he reverted to the central striker position he came alive, proven by the pivotal role he had in the winning goal.
I think it was an honest effort by Carlo to try something different but we’re kidding ourselves by thinking Drogba out wide is the solution. Get him in the middle, leave Torres on the bench, and flank him with Malouda and Kalou.
Nice post BC.
First time poster here.
To be honest Drogba or Torres alone upfront is not enough to dominate Man u central defenders.
They will make the striker(s) look weak.
If we need to work Torres into the mix , this could be a very nice setup. And if we are to have a better chance at winning the game we have to dominate their defenders on-on-one.
So here is the line up.
———-Cech——–
Ivanovic-Luiz-Terry-Cole
Kalou-Lampard-Mikel-Malouda
——–Drogba–Torres——-
This way their will be more players in an attacking position and Torres and Drogba can feed of one another and the wingers. What do u guys think????
Yes, he is. We determined this in the blog entry before this.
Ivanovic’s 10th yellow card came after the second Sunday in April.
Sounds arcane, but FA rules permit him to play.
I confess to being intrigued by the idea of starting Kalou.
He’s wasteful. But he creates a lot of opportunities.
i wanna see this formaiton:
Ivano–Luiz–Terry–A.Cole
Ramires-Essien-Lamps-Malouda
———-Drogba-Torres———–
Do you not remember Carlo is still building around Torres. We need the playmakers. The Torres project must be left till later. Rafa designed his team to fit players like Torres. Jose designed his to fit players like Drogba. Carlo is still working with Jose’s squad, give him time to make his own. He knows how to use playmakers as well.
Juventus : Edgar Davids and Zinedine Zidane
AC Milan : Pirlo and Rui Cost/Kaká/Ronaldinho/Seedorf
3 more games. I am sure Torres will not mind. It takes the pressures off him, he can find his form and learn the play of Chelsea.
A smart move would be to play what Chelsea is accustomed to. My advice to Carlo. Call Jose Mourinho for some help. I mean it is his club.
You lot can say I am living in the past but any person who looks at it can see that this Chelsea is still his Chelsea.
Interesting fact about ref Howard Webb from a football twitterer…
He has never awarded a penalty against Chelsea in the Premier League.
I’ve no idea how to verify this independently, so I choose to accept it as true.

Great fun, but stick to scoring goals DD, a lot on Sunday please
Alright guys, this is perhaps the biggest game of our season. I hope our boys will b up for it, cos i think we have deteriorated with regards to our BIG GAME temperament. That is my major fear. This season it seams when there is a point to made with a match we somehow bottle it. I hope Sunday’s game is diferent. Cos i believe if we are up for a game , we win it. Period!.
Now with regards to my team selection , i dont usually partake in this player selection thing but on this occasion i’ll play Mikel at the base and Ramires and Lampard. Essien needs to sit this one out. I’m a big Ess fan but i feel his days with us are numbered. Honest guys. He fears for his knees whenever he plays. He ducks out of tackles and he’s gotten slow. He was never a great passer of the ball too. Up front we should go with Kalou, Malouda and Drogba. Partly cos they are in form and Kalou especially cos if he wants to prove he can sulk for not starting then he should go out in this match and prove he’s come of age.
I want u guys to observe this from the game on Sunday. Watch the way United defenders will mark Drogba. What Old Red Nose has often done is to go hard on Drogba cos he knows the refs wont give him the benefit of the doubt. Anyone remember the Kung Fu kick by Evans on Drogba last season? Funny enough the call went for Evans. That’s how Manure play against Drogba. The rough tackle him all the time, pushing him whenever a ball is flighted to him.
The only way we gonna beat Manure is to match their energy levels and even more importantly pass the ball QUICKLY. Note , emphasis on QUICKLY.
Hoping for the best. BC , we need to revisit the Carlo-Villas Boas debate again? I believe we may get him at the end of next season. We can give Carlo one more go at it. He deserves it.

I’m just going to offer this up because I was thinking about it today and it’s kind of worrisome. Say we beat Man U. this weekend. We’ll be tied at 73 points but have in all likelihood only a small goal difference advantage. The next two games Man U have are versus Blackburn and Blackpool – two easy wins. That means we have to beat Newcastle and Everton – very, very tricky games, especially the Everton one at Goodison Park. But even if we win those games, I could see Man U. crushing Blackburn and especially the fast-sinking Blackpool, overtaking us in turns of goal difference and just nudging ahead of us to take the title. Man that would be painful.
Spare yourself the time of bashing me for getting ahead of myself. I also know I’m being cynical/negative.
Generally, I agree with your post. A win on Sunday doesn’t assure anything. United still have an easier road ahead. Chelsea’s away match at Everton will be very, very difficult.
But the United’s Blackburn match is away. United have 5 wins, 4 losses and 9 draw on the road. So one could say they only have a 1 in 3 chance of winning that match.
That’s about the only comfort I can take from the schedule!
Man Utd are deserved champions of the league. Let’s return to reality and start thinking about next season. Whom should we release and buy? There are rumours on us going for Lukaku. I don’t think this is a right move as we need pacy and technical players, who can play in the midfield and both score and create goals for others. Lukaku is not such a type of player. We already have Sturidge, Drogba and Torres who can do well up-front. We need a creative player like Neymar and an attacking-midfielder like Pastore. McEachran must be used as a deep-lying playmaker. Anelka, Malouda, Bosingwa, Zhirkov, Ferreira, Essien and Kalou must be released. Lampard, Essien and Terry must be used as subs. My next year’s formation with potential new signings is as follows:
———————-Cech————————
Ivanovic——–Luiz—–Alex—–Van Aanholt
——————-McEachran———————
Kakuta————————————Neymar
————Ramires———–Pastore———–
———————-Sturridge———————
Subs: Turnbull, Terry, Bruma, Cole, Van der Wiel, Torres, Drogba, Borini, Mikel, G.Bale, Benayoun, Lampard
Seriously, give me this team and I will win the Champions League.
wxwax,
++ Blackpool will be fighting to stay alive and will be hard nut to crack. Team fighting for relegations put 100% against any team. Again, as BC keeps blogging – HOPE !!
Repost with a small correction: “Cole instead of Essien”

Seriously ??. Torres, Lampard, Terry and Drogba on Bench and Sturridge lone striker :) . Fantasy football ??
Blue4Life,
The sole reason why Chelsea cannot win the Champions League is that some Chelsea staff also thinks the same as you do. I can bet my life that the team I have offered would beat the current Chelsea squad of Torres, Lampard, Terry and Drogba.
Your fantasy is my reality!!!
Arsenalic, the average age of your starters is 12. :)
I think a good team needs a wee bit more experience than that. Also, Neymar has been playing as a central striker for Santos. And Kakuta has proven nothing to this point.
wxwax
wxwax,
12? I don’t see your peers in my line-up :)
And experience is on the bench. Plus Neymar can play as a winger.
Dude, you are Wenger in making. Wake up from your dreams and think out of your fantasy world !! The whole chelsea staff and management are wrong and you are making the right calls ? Why don’t u ping Roman and get hired ?
Ruh roh.
Webb has done 3 matches each for ManU and Chelsea. United have won all three. Chelsea but one.
Wxwax,
Yes, i have a bad feeling. Fergie all week has been putting pressure on webb.

everyone talks about drogba offside goal, but no one speaks about macheda hand ball…
tomorrow is a great day guys. We are gonna win title at Old Trafford! :D
Grow up, muppet!
Pretty soon all delusional Chelsea fans will wake up from the fantasy world!
We’re getting crushed.
