An immovable object met an unstoppable force on Saturday at Brittania Stadium.
Stoke City are unbeaten at home this season. Chelsea had beaten Stoke 5 out of 5 times in the Premier League, a perfect record. Something had to give.
The loser? Chelsea’s chances of retaining their Premiership title. They vaporized in a 1-1 draw. Manchester United now sit 11 points clear with just eight contests remaining after coming back from 2-0 at West Ham.
With one eye firmly on Wednesday’s massive Champions League match against Manchester United, Carlo Ancelotti might have let a victory slip away. He’s probably not too disappointed. His clear priority was protecting his star players.
On the bench were Fernando Torres and Branislav Ivanovic. Ramires was yanked in the second half despite being Chelsea’s most dangerous player, as was Anelka. Ancelotti was trying to keep key players fresh for Wednesday after a busy week of international play.
One man who won’t be on the pitch Wednesday, David Luiz, was, shockingly, perhaps Chelsea’s poorest performer. His defensive weakness — he plays his man very tightly, often allowing him to spin by with the ball, leaving Luiz out of position — was glaringly revealed just 7 minutes into the game. With Chelsea caught forward, Jonathan Walters took the ball at the halfway line where he was met by Luiz. He muscled by him and from there it was a clear sprint to the box. A deft sidestep by the onrushing Essien and Walters calmly put Stoke City ahead. Luiz was “turned” several times on Saturday, by Edwyne Jones, Walters and Matthew Etherington. It’s an aspect of his game that needs work. Other teams will see his weakness and exploit it.
Stoke’s goal was against the run of play in the first half. Chelsea had comfortably more possession. With Essien as the holding mid in a 4-4-2, Ramires in particular was getting forward and making himself a constant threat. But it was the old firm — Anelka to Drogba — that gave Chelsea their goal. In the 33rd minute Anelka lofted a perfect pass into the center of the box where a running Drogba crouched to head it powerfully by Asmir Begovic. It was a beautiful goal. It suggests that Drogba, who looked lively throughout, might be refreshed after scoring for Cote d’Ivoire during on the break.
And while we’re talking about players making a slow return to form, Frank Lampard also had a very good match. There were hints that he might even be developing an understanding with Ramires. That’s the kind of partnership and insightful play that Chelsea have lacked all season.
It must be noted that another player who is making a slow return from injury also had an excellent match. Jose Bosingwa is man Chelsea fans love to hate. But he looked very sharp today. He was consistently quick and his passing was good. He got injured and was caught up the field on one counterattack but overall he was a strength for the team.
Speaking of counter attacks, that was the story of the second half. With Chelsea committing men forward and Stoke City committed to launching counterattacks, there were chances galore at both ends of the pitch.
The crossbar might still be vibrating from a Drogba shot in the 80th minute. And it’s a good thing Petr Cech didn’t trim his nails this morning. He made a series of fingertip and reaction saves in a dazzling 20 minute spell starting around the 60th minute. Time and again Chelsea sent men forward in search of the winning goal, only to be caught by Stoke’s counters. Too often the defenders were left with little help, exposing large amounts of space that City gleefully exploited. Stoke, meanwhile, kept 7 men behind the ball when it was in their half.
Lost in all of this was a substitute appearance by Fernando Torres in the 61st minute. Other than one long dribbling run, he was a non-factor. His scoreless streak for club and country is now 11, four shy of his record (15, set at Atletico Madrid.)
In the end, a draw was the fair result. Both sides will feel they squandered chances, perhaps Stoke more so than Chelsea.
From Carlo Ancelotti’s perspective, the important thing was getting out of Brittania without any major injuries. It’s been clear for some time that Chelsea are unlikely to win the league title. He knows where Chelsea’s best chance at glory lies this season.
With this week’s Premier League duties tidily disposed of, the wait now begins for what is left of Chelsea’s true season: the Champions League.
See you Wednesday!

Congratulations to India on winning the cricket World Cup!
Clearly many of you were watching cricket, not Chelsea. We missed you in BC Chat. But who can blame you?
Many Indians live near me and there was an eruption of cheering and firecrackers when victory was assured that probably had my neighbors wondering what on earth was going on!
I was convinced I was going to be mentioned in the post. Thank you for saving the embarrassment. Looking forward to Tuesday and Wednesday. Chelsea and Real Madrid in action against Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspurs respectively. Tottenham likely to play the much famed negative counter attacking style (transition) to get an away goal atleast and if they do the match will likely end in 1-1 or 2-1 as I see Real Madrid being cautious instead of their regular aggressive style of play. Real Madrid will not lose that is for certain. Chelsea at home against Manchester United. One thing I will say. Do not and I repeat do not let Manchester United score an away goal. That can make the difference. We need to win this match either by a 2 goal margin 2-0 or if we can’t keep a clean sheet, 3-1. When we travel to Old Trafford. We must go all out. Seeing as United will need to to score 3 or 2 goals depending on the 1st leg. We must play Inter Milan vs Barcelona style. Knowing full well we have a comfortable lead and the other team will be pressing like madmen. We need to have 11 men behind at all times and catch them when they throw too many men forward. We need to play ultimate defensive transition. Do not focus on the Semi Finals. We will get there. Focus on making Red Nose turn Blue!
La Liga is over. Jose Mourinho lost his first home match in 9 years. Ronaldo, Benzema and Xabi Alonso didn’t play.
Frankly, until Pep brought on Messi at about 50 minutes, Barcelona looked likely to drop points at Villareal, too.
It just shows how the big stars really make a difference. Without Messi, Barcelona are Arsenal.
Bosingwa and Malouda should not have started against physical team like Stoke. They were so poor. Luiz made a mistake that costs a draw for us, but he was not that much poor.
Malouda doesn’t deserve to start if he plays like yesterday.
Nice to see Drogba scoring, and he almost scored the second. A bit unlucky..
Nonsense…once a team starts thinking that one game is less important than another spells instant death…what we need to put in perspective is our 7 zip drubbing of them last year and playing with much more cutting edge as comapred to this tame effort where the same old defiences came home to roost……yes we can hold possession and do countless passes back and forth with hardly anything threatening happening for the opposition…infact it actually suited stoke and on the basis of clear chances they could have had a few goals and won the game…no I think the contract between last year and now is stark and the same problems exist as in the bad patch
Where were you watching this? The match was not being telecasted on Indian Television (Instead of, i have no idea why, Liverpool, 6th last season, were given preference over Champions Chelsea)
Weren’t you watchin the final? India won congrats!! :D It STILL turned out to be a blue day!!
First of all, congrats to BC and all the other indians on this blog, the world cup is home, MS Dhoni’s name will forever be echoed amongst the cricket greats. Sachin, what can you say about the lil master, he has achieved every single honour, broken every known record and he still looks like a school boy at the age of 38. The boys in sky blue done us all proud.
Now my attention moves to my other love, my beloved Chelsea, Carlo was right in his post match comments we were lucky to come away with a draw. Stoke pushed us all the way, Luiz and JT were sloppy and responsible for the first goal. The only person who played his heart out was DIDIER DROGBA, he’s unlucky not to have a hattrick to his name yesterday. I may be the only one who’s saying this but i’m getting fed up of Nando, i noticed him maybe once in the 35 minutes he was on the pitch yesterday. He needs to start putting more effort, he owe’s it to the club and the fans, he better score a hattrick against Man Utd lol. Overall it was an average performance, some players didn’t turn up. But the britannia is not an easy place to go to, so i might be being a lil harsh on the lads. Now the attention moves to CL, the boys must believe in themselves, they have no reason not to. Players must turn up and play with passion, commitment and no fear, if they can do that, then even the sky is not the limit. COME ON CHELSEA KTBFFH.
WXWAX,
It was going to happen this season. I think we all can agree no matter our love for Jose. Barcelona are the best in the world. Everyone gets their chance. People do try and force dominance but it never lasts long. Liverpool dominated England once. Then came Manchester United. Chelsea tried but were only successful for 3 years. Arsenal have had more dominance than us. Many people fail to realize they have 10 more titles. Juventus and A.C. Milan had been Italy’s finest and for a period, Europe’s finest. Then came Inter Milan. Real Madrid dominated for a long period. Since Makalele and del Bosque left and Florentino Perez came they haven’t been the same. Barcelona have edged up. Rijkaard and Ronaldinho laid a foundation. Guardiola and Messi built a house. Real Madrid need to reinvent their whole squad. Barcelona are dominant but just like every other dominant team I called, they were and now are beatable. Barcelona’s reign will come to an end. Just like how people figured out how to stop Chelsea. People will figure out how to stop Barcelona. I am sure if Arsenal were 100% fit with their regulars and they drew Barcelona yet again, they would win. People have figured out how to shut out Chelsea. We needed a change. We took way to long to get one and that blame must go on Carlo Ancelotti’s head. The management may be cruel but as long as you deliver what they want you can have a jolly time. Roman and Florentino think alike. They figure top players = attractive football. Florentino thinks as long as he puts top players in his squad he will win and win in style. He thinks with top players, any manager will do as they are not as important as the players he bought. Roman thinks very similar. He thinks he and his money are more important than the manager is. Jose left for this reason and many others. Managers need freedom and control in a club. Jose is fighting for some right now but he will fail just like he did at Chelsea. Inter Milan granted him everything. They loved him. He loved them. It was perfect harmony. He just didn’t like the defensive style of the league. Ironic isn’t it. He means the way they play for draws when winning should be on their minds. Defending like crazy when they are 1-0. Going until the end of the season to decide a cup. He loved it at Chelsea and says he will never go to a Chelsea rival but will comeback to England one day. He and Roman have since then repaired the relationship. I am sure Roman would love to bring back Jose after a horrific season. Jose wants to create history but Jorge won’t allow him that. Barcelona were set for glory even before he came.
I have said it many times. We were once a club like Everton. We were never going to win the league. We would rejoice if we won FA Cup or League Cup but Premier League or Champions/Europa League was never going to happen. 2 men came and changed that. We adore them for that. As much as Roman has screwed us over, he has saved our butts. Without him. Chelsea and I know everyone will agree. Chelsea would be worse the Portsmouth right now. Lampard and Terry would probably be at Manchester United. Giggs, Scholes, Lampard, Beckham? Amazing right.
We need to lay low for a while. When Fergie came. Did he start winning so easy. HELL NO! He remodeled Manchester United from head to toe. He changed everything. He set out a team of tried and tested youth and played them along experienced players. One man famously said, “You will never win anything with youth.” That same season United won the Premier League. Since then they have equaled Liverpool’s record. They went from Everton status to Liverpool status didn’t they. It took time yes. But I am sure any Man Utd fan could tell you now. It was worth it.
We got instant success like it came from a microwave. We bought a pack of popcorn and put it in the microwave. After we ate that pack. We wanted another because it tasted so good.
Manchester United. Liverpool. Juventus. A.C Milan. Inter Milan. Real Madrid. Barcelona.
Those are the names of teams who took precious time, mixed with sole dedication and love for their club to create success. They didn’t buy popcorn and microwave heat it. They went. Slowly but surely picked each seed of corn carefully. Added ingredients. Waited awhile. Then they tasted success.
I hope this inspires you lot. Please take the time to read this. We need to find someone to pick seeds carefully. Add ingredients. Then we may have to wait. 1 season. 2 season. 5 seasons. The end result will surely be worth it.
Jose may be a great coach. Even if I do love him alot. I regard Sir Alex Ferguson and Bill Shankly more than I do him. Those are the real legends of the sport. Jose has to still prove alot even if he has proven he can win.
Here’s an idea. We have Jose McEachran. The Chelsea fans proclaimed Lampard successor. Why is he not getting play? Haven’t we seen the blessings youth + experience can bring to a game?
The Barcelona team that won the Nike Premier Cup 1999 was it? They have gone on or atleast 1 that I know of has gone on to become one of the greatest playmakers in the world. Andres Iniesta.
The Manchester United team that won the FA Youth Cup twice was it? Their names are etched in Premier League history.
The Chelsea team that won the FA Youth Cup and likely to win it again. What will become of them?
“the Premier League trophy fleeing Chelsea’s grasp, Ancelotti’s team were not simply devoid of hope. They were hopeless, lacklustre in possession, non-committal in the tackle. At the Britannia, at its baying best, such traits are tantamount to a suicide note”…guradian…well problem is we have seen that display many times before….we keep banging on with the same system which is well and truly has shown not to work…carlo’s xmas tree formation..where the wide players/wingers tuck inside…hope we go back to a 4.4.2 and the boys show real fight and a lot more smart thinking!
Jaz,
You are forgetting the heorics of Petr Cech. A David Seaman save and some other finger tip saves. Had it been Turnbull/Hilario. Oh god… Reina did something similar against Manchester United in the FA Cup. It was 4 reflex saves though not fingertip saves needing catlike reflexes but saves needing total concentration and a whole lot of reflexes. Cech deserves the MOTM. I think if Cech were English and playing for Arsenal. David Seaman would be proud. I’ll link you.

Edwyne Jones??
Frank Lampard also had a very good match??
Stoke’s goal was against the run of play in the first half. Chelsea had comfortably more possession???
Were you even at the game or could you only write your ‘report’ after hearing what the Sky ‘pundits’ said after watching it at home on your sofa, or was it the pub?
You seem to have left out a few pieces of action off your unfairly biased ‘report’.
Why not check your facts and stats before you try to write next time, it might help to give people a factual report on a game.
Not what you see through your blue tinted specs!!
my first seeing luiz and his trapping was poor
i expected iva to start bcos of d physical game
and zrkovh bcos of his flair
well its all ova in d epl
i neva rated torres i like aguero better…so i hate all ds fuse abt torres nt scoring

Ha!
We all agree that Stoke City had the better of the second half. Yet according to the BBC’s stats, Chelsea had 52% of the possession.
Question: if Chelsea didn’t boss the 2nd half, when was it that they held the ball for so long? Yes! That’s right! In the first half, when they were the dominant team!
See the man for your kewpie doll. :)
Oops! Kenwyne, not Edwyne. You got me there!
I assume we agree that whatever his first name, he had a great match and his physical play overwhelmed Luiz more than once.
I think our fans seriously need to check themselves, we win a couple and we should be winning the league, we draw one and hell we have a dismal manager and team, get real please, its starting to sound extremely plastic. We undoubtedly have a fabulous manager, yet all i see are discussions about a certain man completely unrelated to the club at the moment, when will you guys ever if EVER wake up and see the reality? Carlo is an incredible manager, yes he has his downsides but who dosent, matter of fact is that he is the current manager of our club so cut him some slack.
Jeez it seems impossible to appease you lot, Gurdiola blah blah blah, Jose blah blah blah, the grass always seems greener on the other side dosent it.
Makes me wish Roman never bought this club, atleast we would only have the loyal, real and proper Chelsea fans around.
I really hope we knock Man U out. The Mirror today is saying Ferguson chalks up our good recent form vs. United entirely down to luck. Then he casually mentions that in the 2008 CL Final, United were the better team and deserved to win. Sounds like Fergie’s talking out of both sides of his mouth. The ’08 Final was an incredibly even match, and if anything, Chelsea were the unlucky team with JT’s slip and the numerous shots that cannoned off United’s woodwork. Am I salty and is the Mirror’s report potentially rubbish? Yes to both. Still, I’d love to see Chelsea win for nothing else than to see United lose. If that happens, I bet Ferguson blames referees, the weather, injuries, or acts of God. Go Chelsea.
joeblue,
joeblue,
I hope this post doesn’t relate to me. I have been supporting Carlo since July 2009 and I still do 100%. My post does not in any way suggest we sack Carlo and get Jose. My posts suggests instead of being plastic fans, we are content with what our loyal players do on the pitch. Cheer them on winning or losing. We only cheer when they win. When they draw or lose we say we need to sack the manager and buy new players. I was one of the few and still am one of the few that would like Carlo to continue after this season. I have said it already. I know much more about Carlo than you lot. What you all expect from him, is never going to happen. That is where the new manager talk stems from. Frank and Piet wanted to model Chelsea’s youth academy after Ajax’s. Hence they got Avram Grant. We want Carlo to use to the youth especially Josh, use new tactics, buy certain players. He will not. Hence some of us want a new manager. I am suggesting that instead of being plastic fans. Cheer on the team. If however Roman sacks Carlo, his plan should model mine. I made a suggestion because if he sacks Carlo. What next. They aren’t many others that are at Carlo’s level. I want Carlo to stay. I just gave a suggestion if he left. We can win the title still. Arsenal are going to plan swimmingly. I expected them to drop 6 points. They have dropped 4 so far and they still have Liverpool and Tottenham to play. Man Utd however still need to lose. Before I needed them to lose twice including us. Now I need them to lose thrice including us. 2 other teams to take 3 points each away from Utd. We have to win all remaining games as well. If this happens, my plan can go back to action. If not, congratulations to Man Utd.
This is our season…down to the next 2 games…..besides winning I would love to see red nose go into a meltdown and the sulks with his side getting kicked out…but then we need to play smart and with spirit…for them getting some away goals will be an aim…so we need to get a clean sheet…for me their biggest threat comes down the left side …particularly from evra…..playing as a winger…with the same said for their other full back…otherwise they will play to frustrate… play long balls and be direct…without being over adventurous waiting for us to over committ in the quest for a goal…and I hope carlo gets the game plan right…as i think red nose will spring a surprise using his rat cunning
One of Ferguson’s strengths (a strength shared by Mourinho) is a big mouth and an ability to get inside his opponent’s head.
He’s trying to unsettle Chelsea. Probably won’t work, Chelsea are a veteran team. But it’s how some managers work; lots of talk before a big match, hoping something upsets their opponent.
I didnt watch the game but from the match highlights I agree with what CA said in the post match interview. We are lucky to get a draw. Our defence are not live up to the expectation during the game and its not the best performance from JT either. Luiz is so sloppy and had been caught out of position so many times. Some might say he’s become too complacent because he just received the player of the month award but one can hope this is not the reason behind his bad performance. This is not good since ManUtd have won their game and Rooney looks like back in business again.
I can see some stick has been throw to Torres because of his recent performance. Let me remind you, Ramires has been an under-performers in the squad for the first couple of month and I can see some of us are not so keen with this. But look, he is now become a prime candidate for the Chelsea player of the season. So, what I can say is, just give him some more time. He might be a renowned world class striker but it doesn’t mean he can fit straight away in any team. He just been at Chelsea for 2 months and don’t give up with his performance just yet. Give him some more time and like others have said before, once he open his goal account, believe me, it will not stop there. Just be patient guys!
I would really feel cheap to lift a trophy which was gifted by referees! The latest one must have got gift hampers from vidic and red-nose!
Let us focus on the Champions League now! And never ever start Malouda ahead of Zhikrov now on!
For the goal we conceded, I would say Bosingwa was at fault more than Luiz. Luiz made that tackle attempt at the halfway line, with at the least 4 chelsea players behind him. Bosingwa plays more line a RW than a RB or RWB. He was caught out of position many a times and that put more pressure on Terry and Luiz.
Luiz though had a poor match by his high standards. Was caught on the wrong side more than once. He needs to be more careful committing to tackles. Looks like that is his style of play.
We need to create more scoring opportunities. That was the biggest worry for me from the match. Need to get a creative midfielder next summer if we are to compete for PL.
Tactically, I’d like Carlo to start Drogba ahead of Torres on Wednesday. I’m not down on Torres but rather think Carlo should go with the hot hand for such a big match. Drogs had his best game of 2011 on Saturday; he looked sharp, got a goal and was a danger throughout. Torres is clearly bereft of confidence right now and I think he should be saved for a subsititue appearance late on, when his pace might cause problems as players tire.
Defending United is a difficult problem for Chelsea as there are so many key men who make the Reds tick. A few months ago I thought the key to shutting them down was to suffocate Nani’s supply on the right. While I still think that’s important, Rooney’s really come on strong since then and of course Scholes is the lynchpin who controls the pace of United’s attack with his distribution. Then of course you have danger men Chicarito and Berbatov to worry about too. With all of these threats I fear Carlo might direct his men to play defensively. However, I think that would be mistake. It’s critical we go into Old Trafford with a good result. Getting anything up there has been nigh impossible this season. If we get a crummy result at home I think it could spell the end of the tie. That said, I’d like to see a blitzkrieg on United in the first 15 minutes with the aim of getting an early goal. That means swarming them when they have the ball and attacking in numbers. Let’s knock them off their game early to pave the way to knocking them out all-together.
I agree. And he’s particularly good at it because his remarks are often dropped casually in a conversation or interview focusing on another topic. It’s never a rant or tirade. Here in the U.S., regardless of the sport, when a manager or coach says something like that its printed out and put up in the dressing room as extra motivation to win. In England the philosophy seems to be to ignore such things. There are merits to both approaches but I think I prefer the English version.
Blue4Life,
I agree…..Bosingwa should have dealt well when Luiz failed!
One of red-nose’s strengths is the match referees!
Did the author of this article actually watch the game? lampard was awful back to his “me, me, me” mode again. People always assume Drogba is the only self conceited one in the team. lampard still wants his 20 goals and seemingly reluctant to play others in, but would try “his luck” and damn the outcome. Somehow i blame Carlo. He needs to instill the essence of the team into the players. They must know they play for the team and not for themselves. I am not a manager but i have followed football long enough to appreciate the psychology behind it. The team with the best “thinkers” on and off the field wins. Some fans want Carlo out not because he is bad, but because he doesn’t inspire confidence and that will be his undoing. Yes we dont expect to win all matches, it’s impossible, but what we want is for our team to”fight” and play like their lives depended on it. We didn’t get that at stoke. We seem to take an age to move the ball forward and this has happened so many times this season. We get bullied on the ball and smaller teams now know when they make the game a scrap then we cant win.
How the hell is Bosingwa still in this team. Again i hear he was good, i must have been watching a different game. The guy is awful he makes Ferreira look good at least Ferreira can cross a ball. I thought again Fernando was good when he came on. How the hell does playing 20 mins count as playing a game?
I agree MatBlue I thought …Lampard was ordinary and slow and too self indilgent to shoot, while boswinga is expected to provide width and double up as a winger in carlo’s formation…yet a can’t cross a ball…ever…yes he needs to go asap…and carlo not being able to inspire..agree again…it looked like they were playing a training exercise with the aim to keep possession…but unfortunately if you don’t make any progress in the final third it really only benefits to opposition you get a chance to sit back..get their breath back and look at them with a smile..hope the boys show fight and we do get the tactics right against manure as if we play like we did last time it had draw written all over it until along came 2 bits of individual brilliance!
McEachran ahead of Lampsy next time. And i wonder how the hell does Malouda gets the nod ahead of Zhirkov!
The post match reaction of the Stoke City draw, has caused a lot of frustration among the fans. A lot of them saying that the title hopes are gone.
My question is when were we there in the title race?
Let us rewind few months back, in January we were in a terrible situation. We were 5th in the table, and seemed as though we would move further down leaving way for Tottenham Spurs to catch up on us.
The arrival of the 75 mil. transfers didn’t help our cause as we lost to Liverpool followed by a draw against Fulham. And after that we were shown the exit gate from FA cup.
At that time there was one only thing in the mind of the fans, the players and the manager: to finish among the top 4 at the end of the season to ensure a berth in the Champions League next season. If you have forgotten for a very long time now we have been trying to chase a place in the top 4.
The win against Manchester United, Blackburn and Manchester City, had given us the enormous confidence and the leverage to end up in the third spot at the time being. It also marked the birth of cult hero David Luiz. But even then we were not in the contention of defending the cup as we were and are more than 9 points adrift of Manchester United. Though a win in almost all the matches would have given us an outside chance provided the top 2 clubs drop points!
It’s Manchester United & Arsenal we are chasing after, clubs which want to win EPL as much as we do. You don’t expect them to lose points easy.
I think our players and manager have done well to climb to the third position so far and I think if we finish in 2nd or even 3rd position in the table at the end of the season it would be a great result for us.
~KTBFFH~
bro bluemaniac….as chelsea fan we should be expecting challenge for the title…yea we have a bad patch which made us want at least top 4 but we still pin some hhope on chelsea winning the title.mathematically its possible and before the stoke game we have a gr8 chance as we have a game in hand as well as a game against man u,not forgetting the ars-man u game…so what i am saying is that no matter wat we shoulod be in the title race as long as its mathematically possible..chelsea must fight all the way
Also i would like to add WXWAX that its easy to blame a new defender for his mistakes but why was Bosingwa not covering him well enough? he was caught out throughout the match, inspite of his ‘experience’ Bosingwa was again very very poor, i would forego his defensive skills had he been great going forward like Dani Alves, but his crossing is horrendous and he never picks out his man, when the counter happens he falls to the ground hoping for some pity from the ref, the guy is a freaking liability and i swear he will make us pay against United.
While Lampard was his usual wasteful self ,Essien looked worn out, the pace of the game just seems to escape him these days, he couldnt want the season to end sooner.
Lets hope we play much much better against Manure or the CL goes away for another season.
Hi All! I’m back here! First up, many seem to think that this article was written by me. No. This was written by WXWAX, not me.
See, we missed ‘another’ opportunity. Let’s not even try suggest that we were ‘never in the title race’. That’s like saying ‘ah, these grapes are sour’. We were in the title race. Consider this. Man Utd were trailing 2-0 at half time. If they had lost and we had won this weekend, the gap between us and Man Utd, would have been 6 points, with one game in hand for us. If we had won our game on hand, the gap would have been just 3 points. Now also consider that we would get to play them again in the league. If we beat them, we are level on points.
Now you may think that there are too many ‘if’s but these are absolutely achievable ‘if’s. This weekend probably summed up Chelsea and Man Utd this season. Both these teams faced adversities – one came through in an emphatic fashion and the other did not. Now you can blame it on whatever but the fact remains that they won an away game 4-2 which they were trailing 0-2. And we only could muster a draw. As simple as that. We missed another opportunity.
Please don’t say we were never in the league. What would be appropriate to say is, “We were running away with the league. We then slept for a few months. We went out of the title race. We got several chances to get back into the race. We missed them all. Now, we are not in the title race anymore”. This is more like it.
Because tactically, Ancelotti was asking Bosingwa to go forward in order to provide width.
Remember, Stoke’s goal was a breakaway. Perfectly normal for a central defender to be the first man to challenge the ball. But the central defender must either win the ball or slow his man down. He mustn’t be turned and allow both to go by him. One of Terry’s strengths is being such an impenetrable barrier.
One past the central defender, the next line of defense is the defensive midfielder and the other central defender. In this case Essien came charging back but overshot Walters. All the striker had to do was sidestep and shoot.
You might criticize Ancelotti for pushing men forward. But I don’t think Bosingwa’s at fault for obeying orders.
Chelsea had 20 shots against Stoke (compared to Stoke’s 13.) 10 on target, 10 off target. And 12 corners (compared to Stoke’s 5.)
They created plenty of chances. As has been the case for much of this season, the finishing was lacking.
Lampard was deeply involved in creating those chances. His linking play was good. As I wrote, at times there were suggestions that he’s developing an understanding with Ramires. That is earnestly to be hoped for. Such understandings are rare on this team.
Overall he had a very good game.
Bang on Joeblue, Bosingwa was as usual useless. He has no defensive skills, his work rate is appalling hardly ever make return runs. His forward runs and dribbling skills are so predictable you would find it hard to get more than 1:1 at Ladbrokes. Why we ever bought him is a mystery to me. Had Bosingwa been where he was supposed to be then Luiz would not have been caught out and Stoke would not have got in front early in the match. I would miss Bosingwa as much as I would miss a haemorrhoid.
I seriously expect Carlo to play Luiz and Ivanovic in future EPL matches. For CL on Wednesday play Luiz wide and Alex central ( I expect Alex to be fit, or am I wrong there?)
For us to beat manure on Wednesday it’s obvious that all player have to perform, but Malouda especially have to opt his game. If a CL clash vs manure isn’t enough to motivate Malouda then nothing is.
It’s paramount that we don’t concede at the Bridge and a 2-0 win should suffice as I’m sure we will score at OT.
correction: Ivanovic wide
The stoke match for me was just another reminder of a team whose star is not going up but sadly going down….that’s not to say we don’t have a few brilliant results left in us. I think in the league many changes need to be made for next year for us to be in the running, so our best chance is the CL. The really sad thing is that manure have one of the weakest teams for years and yet will most likely end up winning. On a simple measure look at our performance against stoke this time last year and now, it’s chalk and cheese. As someone else said every team knows how to play against us and now believes they can win. Even at home our invinciblity has come into question. Yes carlo has transformed the style to one of keeping possession for the sake of holding the ball, very slow build ups but unless players are making many runs into space or take on players and beat them to then create an added numerical advantage it actually helps the defence just sit back and organise. Under Hiddick or Mourinho we kept possession but at the same time played much more direct which didn’t allow defences to organise. As a team defending look at us pressing teams. trying to get the ball off the opposition and then compare it to say Bearcelona. Again apart from a few, we are content to ball watch which again in the past we were much more aggressive and less content to sit back. To play carlo’s style we actually need a few ball players, who can hold the ball, attract defenders to them, have the ability to beat them or still get passes away but we don’t as ouy players have other skills. Anyhow on manure. they are very beatable but we need to attack their fullbacks, which then stops them from coming forward and supplying the strikers, which then leaves scholes as their main source of supply. If the boys believe in themselves and play to their ability they can do it as manure have been the great pretenders all year, with red nose doing a mourinho all year and attracting attention to himself rather than a team with many questions not asked of it, till hopefully now!
rooney’s 2 match ban will be interesting…if he appeals and then gets off…or if it sticks…watch this space as will manure work hard in getting him off and do plenty of behind the scenes work sticking up for this moron…great advertisment for all the kids that were watching …NOT!
Question guys. Why didn’t we buy Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, van Persie, Fabregas, Ferdidnand and Vidic when we had a chance. This is something I have been pondering about in my head. What do Chelsea’s scouts get paid for. How is it we haven’t been able to find proper to talent to put in out first team? Don’t mention Josh as he has been with us since 8. I mean how hard would it have been for Jose to look at his native Portugal and buy Cristiano? I mean seriously? You must see my point. I think our scouts don’t do crap in my opinion. Can anyone elaborate on this? I think this has been asked before, not sure by who though. I mean really? How hard is it to spot talent, buy him, nurture him and chase out the oldie. It wasn’t hard at all for Fergie to find a Beckham replacement and then a replacement for that replacement was it?
Luiz is cup tied and will not play.
I can’t understand why everyone can’t see that Bosingwa played one of his best games since coming back from a serious knee injury. I have to think that the dislike for him is so embedded that it’s effecting what we see.
Bosingwa was in exactly the position Ancelotti wanted him in when Stoke City scored.
Come on guys, there’s no mystery to this. All season Carlo has created width by pushing the fullbacks forward. Chelsea were on the attack and *both* Cole and Bosingwa were up the pitch when Stoke created a breakaway. The fault for that goal lies #1 with Luiz and #2 with Essien.
Gotcha.
I would be astonished if Alex’s first match back is a critical Champions League game. He wasn’t even on the bench on Saturday.
Among the players Chelsea purchased during the window you describe:
Arjen Robben
Petr Cech
Michael Essien
Didier Drogba
Nicolas Anelka
Ashley Cole
Michael Ballack
Ricardo Carvalho
Ramires
David Luiz
This isn’t enough talent for a “proper first team”?
Which team was it that won the double last season?
Chelsea can’t just go out and buy every player you fancy.
Will Rooney’s two match ban be applied even for the Champions League?
Surely, WXWAX, if you believe our full back isn’t supposed to focus first on defence before attacking, then i am afraid bro, u’ve got it all wrong. How many crosses did our “attacking” fullback put it in. Dude, we’ve all followed Bosingwa’s game since he came back from injury and he’s been dire, to say the least. If there is one player i wont be sad to let go it will b him. Ash gets forward (and even if his attacking decision making is poor) and defends brilliantly. Bosingwa doesn’t offer much in attack except to run forward with blistering pace cut’s inside and passes backwards. This has happened so many times it’s just appalling to watch. How many times have u seen Bosingwa win the ball from an attacking winger ? He get’s skinned all the time. When a team is on a roll and one player, just one player appears a weak link, it can affect the general confidence in the team. Did anybody see the Blackpool match? We were ahead 3-0, then Bosingwa tries his “Messi” impression , loses the ball and next thing u know, Puncheon scores and the team suddenly is under pressure. Come again dude
lets be realistic about it … the players knew, the manager knew and we all knew that chasing Manchester United with a 10 points drift is a difficult task…
for us the title is plausible only given the top 2 teams drop points …
Just because some pundit in some sky sports or star sports said that we have an outside chance of climbing back into the top , doesn’t mean we would. Manchester United have lost very few matches this season or so to speak they have been rock solid this season many times they have come from 2 goals down to win the match.
NO DISRESPECT TO THE BLUES Here…
We have AWESOME players to out class man. utd. and other teams but unfortunately our players aren’t syncing well…
we had a great OUTSIDE chance of closing in on the Man. Utd but such draws just makes the outside chance disappear.
I don’t think CA has EPL in his mind right now, he said it long back that his focus is UCL and to finish among the top 4 in PL.
The title was always PLAUSIBLE. Reactions like this : “title hopes diminishing” is a silly. To stay on top we have to have some consistency and this season we lacked that.
agree with a 100%.
Bosingwa’s passes are also not all that brilliant. He makes runs forward then like MATT blue said either he passes back or his attempt to find a player in the 18 yard box goes astray.
And about Manure i have always said we’ve got better footballers than they have. However what sets Manure apart from other teams is their work rate. They always overwhelm teams with their work rate more so than their football. If we can match their work rate they will b no match for us. If we dont turn up, we will b done for. Simple us that
I find it amusing, hope = chance?? not what i have been taught, just a few weeks back we were praying to be in the top 4 and here we are saying we had a chance at the title? had we even won our game at stoke we would still be far too behind united at this stage of the season, you have to be very close to capitalize on mistakes, gone are the seasons where one could claw back double digit defecits.
Infact we have climbed up more than our expectations and a 3rd finish wont exactly be ruining my night.
Considering our dear Bosingwa, enough has been said already, i hope we get him out soon and get a proper right back, who first and foremost can defend and then anything extra is just a bonus for me.
One massive worry for me is Torres, hell the only solution i can see is declaring him unfit to play for a few weeks and get him on track in training, his confidence needs an enormous boost and until he gets that monkey off his back i doubt him being of any use for us. I pray i will be proved wrong but i am getting that Sheva feeling.
McE and Alex not ready for tomorrow according to Chelsea TV

Let’s have a night like that again tomorrow
joeblue,
joe thats exactly what I stated if you scrolled down a bit.
Its good to be optimistic but not unrealistic.
Blog colleague ChelseaDaft have made an excellent analysis on how to beat manure.

i agree mate, some seasons you win the doubles and the trebles and some you just dont seem up for it.
Thats the beauty of being a football fan, the falls make the highs so amazing.
The very definition of a breakaway counterattack is that men are caught upfield.
To guard against that, that the center backs linger around the half way line. It’s their job to stop the one man — one man — who can hurt the team. They failed.
I completely agree, Bosingwa has been extremely poor so far this season. Coming back from a major knee injury, he hasn’t been quick, intelligent, accurate and he’s been very weak defensively. That’s been clear for all to see. it’s why Ivanovic immediately displaced him when Luiz came on board.
None of that, however, has anything to do with the Stoke City match. Bosingwa was unusually quick and sharp. He had a good match.
On the goal, he was were he was supposed to be.
DanaBlue,
Yeah… Then Roman jinxes our season by telling Manchester United their season is over.
I love ChelseaDaft. Not to be arrogant but he is one of the few people who can talk tactics better than me.
I just made a chalkboard for Bosingwa in the Stoke City match.
Jose Bosingwa
72 passes attempted.
56 successful (77%)
16 unsuccessful
Is that good or bad? Let’s compare to a like player, Ashely Cole.
Ashley Cole
53 passes
42 successful (79%)
11 unsuccessful
Those stats support what we saw. Bosingwa was more active than Ashley Cole, attempted about 20% more passes and was equally accurate with his distribution.
Has Bosingwa been poor this season? Yes. Was Bosingwa poor against Stoke City? No. Was he responsible for the goal? No
To me the difference is that United are generally very fluid offensively. They always seem to create chances. Like any other team, when their strikers slump they don’t score. But their system always seems to create dangerous chances.
Compare that to Chelsea this season, where the attacks have often been slow to build and sometimes lack teeth at the end.
My hope is that the veterans they rely upon so heavily in their midfield — Scholes and Giggs — are exhausted from a long season. United lean heavily on them in big matches.
I love to see this:
“”I want to stay at Chelsea,” Ancelotti told the Daily Express.”I would like to extend my contract because I love these players and this club. “Obviously it is just not my decision, but I don’t think they require me to win a trophy to retain my position.”"
You are being very stubborn WXWAX, you can bring up whatever stats you want but get this, A.cole had a very poor match yet his performance was equal to a ‘good’ Bosinwa. That itself is enough.
The guy does not belong at a top club, especially at one where the defense is known to be a brick wall.
wxwax,
Statistics can be read in many ways. Your own figures states that Ashley has a better passing percentage 79% vs 77%. More important Bosingwa has 33% more unsuccessful passes. Many of the missed passes resulted in dangerous Stoke counter attacks.
BTW good luck Spurs, please send Real out of CL early as usual.
I agree wxwax and Matblue about manure…about them always creating chances, their system and work rate (run all day and fight)…but this season not one team has dominated and even their team is much poorer than from previous ones….my gripe is our very slow build up which now has become our style doesn’t help in breaking down teams….it actually helps opposition teams…manure get success because they are more direct and fast in getting into the final third of the pitch to attack the goal…when they lose the ball they fight much more in actually trying to get it back…we tend to sit back and accept the fact that the other team now has the ball…the worst culprits are our forwards who put little pressure on defenders bringing the ball out….so it’s these things that worry me about carlo, the fact we are still going down the same road even though it’s not working…on manure they always play wide players and they always put in dangerous crosses…we ask kalou, malouda or anelka mostly to play inside and then ask our full backs to be the wide players and supply the crosses (with very little success)……..manure are very beatable but we need the right set up and formation and be motivated and fired up…I’m not convinced essien is a holding midfielder, bossy is suspect in defense and very predicatable in attack, molouda totally out of form so I would go for something different as playing for a 1 goal scoreline might not be enough…but again carlo doesn’t have it in him to hoist a surprise so I expect it will be an arm wrestle to the end as red nose will be happy to sit back..play the counter and try to nick an away goal or 2..
on the team I would have essien at right back, give malouda the flick for zirkov, have mikel as a holding midfielder and start with drogba and anelka
mourinho won 4 zip so he’s now fairly certainly in the CL semi’s …again showing that he is in a class above others
Just watched the Spurs-Madrid game. Despite their victory, Real look totally beatable. Their fullbacks – Marcelo and Ramos – are basically entrenched in the opposition’s box leaving acres of space behind them to exploit. Because Spurs had 10 men they couldn’t do this much but when its 11 vs. 11 I bet they, among others, would. Also, Pepe is one of the worst center-backs playing for a major club. He’s a fouling machine and makes countless errors. Lucky for him he’s got Carvalho and Xabi Alonso to bail him out. Also, is it just me or is Iker Casillas a bit overrated? Every game Real or Spain game I watch he seems to make a mental error, like his sliced clearance tonight that led to a Spurs corner.
Pity Madrid are in the other section of the draw. Chelsea would beat them over two legs, for sure.
i agee with you
Ha!
My soccer station replayed the Chelsea match and I recorded it. Just watched Stoke’s goal again.
It started with Bosingwa carrying the ball deep in to Stoke’s territory. He passed to Anelka. Anelka’s pass back to him was intercepted. Bosingwa tried to reach the man who intercepted the pass but the ball was already away to Walters. Luiz misplayed both the ball and his man at the half way line. It happens.
Bosingwa made a nice run and Stoke counter attacked on Anelka’s turnover.
Bosingwa was faultless.
Lucky for Chelsea, so do Inter and Schalke. Horrid defense.
We should watch this Farfan guy in Schalke
Bosingwa is not a defender. How many times must this be said. He is a knock off Daniel Alves. We couldn’t get Alves so we got this guy. He is a wing back who runs up the pitch and relies heavily on a high defensive line and an anchorman to cover him. Did you watch his Porto and Portugal Euro 2008 games? Scolari plays higher up the pitch than Carlo. Carlo is Italian after all and Scolari is Brazilian. Hence he shined under Scolari. Since his injury. He has been afraid to unleash the blistering pace he once had. His touch and crossing ability has gotten poor. To blame Bosingwa is mad. When Chelsea start a match they start deep. They only ever go higher up if they desperately need a goal or they are scoring for fun. WXWAX is absolutely right when he put the blame on Luiz. Quite frankly, WXWAX was also right when he said Luiz was “turned” alot during the game. Maybe he was on a high of overconfidence or maybe Stoke found a weakness in his game that Fulham, Manchester United, Manchester City nor us found. Either way, he will undoubtedly be brought back down to Earth after that performance.
The difference between Ivanovic and Bosingwa.
Ivanovic is one not to travel far up the pitch as he is a CB and they do not do that. Hence he allows our RW alot of space to exploit and allows the team to defend in the “cover” shape. This would be:
——————–A. Cole
—————Terry
———–Alex/Luiz
——-Ivanovic
When Bosingwa plays. He travels so far up, the RW is forced to come back or cut inside. Anelka/Kalou/Ramires usually cut inside. He makes the team look like this:
——————————-A. Cole
————–Terry
————-Alex/Luiz/Ivanovic
—————————–Bosingwa
A. Cole will come back often and it looks like this:
———-A. Cole
——–Terry
——-Alex/Luiz/Ivanovic
———————–Bosingwa
A LW could easily run past Bosingwa using trickery or pace and have about 3 men ready for a cross in the box with A. Cole trying to get back and the CB’s and us are ready to pee ourselves.
Also to point out. Our RB’s are well known ball watchers and players are told to ignore them most of the time. In other words. Nani and Giggs aren’t afraid.
If we had a higher defensive line we would be safer:
————————–A. Cole
——————–Terry
——————-Alex/Luiz/Ivanovic
————————-Bosingwa
This also allows for the ball to be released quicker and attacks to be built faster. With Luiz higher up on the pitch, he can add his magic with us not having to worry about a counter attack.
Deep defensive lines don’t work with Wing Backs. Enough said.
It is funny in my opinion. My new Real Madrid save on FM is going so well. 15 games. 3 times conceded. All thanks to Marcelo ball watching of course. 4 other times I conceded were thanks to a Diarra penalty, corner and Sergio Ramos being extremely tired and a new LW unleashed. One funny thing I liked though. Barcelona whom I beat 2-0 away started the match in a strange fashion. Allowing me to get like 6 shots in 5 minutes. Then after half time, after Higuain punished Abidal and Pique, they started owning me. I totally parked the bus and they still kept coming. At the end of the 2nd half, they had 73% possesion and about 27 shots with 14 on target. I had 11 shots with 3 on target. Thank god Villa was injured and Xavi was tired.
actually on the stoke goal blames goes to luiz who I have no idea what he was thinking as he just stopped, frozen in time…with then the next culprit being essien you allowed the forward to come back inside when actually he could have been sheperded him out to the byline…but having said that bossy is not a defender who will make a wingers hell but rather a an attack minded defender who has a weak cross who defends on an average level…having said that I would be looking for someone who is better in both departments and a bit more durable and tough
I don’t think Bosingwa was at fault for this goal. Not at all. When full backs push forward, they always leave space behind and that’s understood and expected. Luiz failed to push the ball to the touch and allowed the Stoke player to get through. The prime culprit was Essien. He just bungled. Anyone with some defensive mindset would have tried to do something to make the shot more difficult if not anything. Plus, Cech didn’t do well conceding like that in the near post.
I still maintain that playing Essien as the right back in the 07/08 final was probably a costly error. In defensive positions, we need players who can think like a defender and maintain focus. Essien allowed Ronaldo to score that header. Should have been the clever and ugly Belletti who could have been a pain for Ronaldo.
