We all live in a David Luiz world . . .
He is a cult hero already! You’ve got his kinda curly hair wigs at Stamford Bridge. You’ve got songs for him. You’ve got loud cheers for every piece of action from him. Yes he is a hero, he is the darling of the fans. David Luiz. How many players get this cult status in the first few weeks in a new club?
Now I know what’s the fuss about David Luiz. Chelsea had long been trying to sign David Luiz. I was so obsessed with the signing of David Luiz only to find the official message on the Benfica club website that all talks with Chelsea FC had broken down and that he would continue to be a Benfica player. And you know how upset I was. Then, the Fernando Torres rumour got stronger and the pain of not signing David Luiz was gone.
When the Fernando Torres signing did happen, I was reporting it live (!) on twitter and had practically ignored the fact that a certain David Luiz could still come in. So when that news on the signing of David Luiz arrived, I was like, ‘Oh really? most welcome’, because I was so into our number 9. I had no idea of what David Luiz would become.
We all knew that he is a good defender and very brazilian in that. After these rumours, I also watched some of his videos to see what’s he really like. I read Benfica blogs, forums and any junk in internet that had ‘David Luiz’ in it. All that pictures, videos, blogs and profiles still haven’t done justice to what David Luiz is really like.
In just about 2 months, he’s created an impact like no other new player has done in recent times.
What makes David Luiz special? Why is he a darling of the crowds?
Brazilian skills
Luiz is very skillful for a defender. I must say I love his tackles. When Luiz is in the zone, I watch him with this ‘what’s he gonna do now’ kind of feeling. He’s very capable of making timely tackles and that makes me curious to see what’s he planning to do. Not just his tackles and stuff, also when you see how he marks his man, how he tracks and pressures his man, you can see that he’s quite wholesome with the art of defending. If you see some of his attacking runs, you can see that, for a central defender, he can beat his man.
British bulldog spirit
Oh yes, he’s got that in tons. Fans love it when their players give it all. They love it when they see that their players get stuck in and refuse to give up. David Luiz scores all 10 points here. He never seems to give anything less than 100%. In fact, there were occasion where I thought that tackle/ball/pass is out of reach for David Luiz, and then he comes in like a superman and takes things under control. And he seems to do that often.
Plus, he takes no sh*t. He seems love a challenge. I think this is the key in his settling down in English football so easily. He’s ready to fight. He’s ready to take it to the opponents – be in attack or in defence. I just loved the way he dealt with Rooney. We know how much of a rowdy Rooney is, but David Luiz just beat him in his own game because he seemed to like that challenge.
Portuguese cleverness
Well, this is a tricky topic. There is a thin line between sportsmanship and being clever. David Luiz has the cleverness of an experienced defender. He knows when to do things and when not to. He exactly reads the minds of the referees. There are occasions where he goes wrong and gets punished. But on the whole, it’s because of this cleverness, forwards would hate to play against David Luiz. He’s a very good defender and on top of that, he knows how to get away. That’s a dangerous combination.
Stamford Bridge heart
He can’t speak English. He’s got curly hair. He gives it all on the pitch. He’s like a wall in the defence. He pisses off opponents. He scores goals. And his goal celebrations are wiiiillldddd. The fans love him. And he loves them too. He can excite the crowd. He can get the crowd going for us. He is a Stamford Bridge hero already!
So much so, that we have this David Luiz song (heard in Chelsea Football Fancast), that’s meant sound like the announcement of the team sheet, in the tune of ‘yellow submarine’:
Number one, Luiz
Number two, Luiz
Number three, Luiz
Number four, Luiz
Number five, Luiz
Number six, Luiz
Number seven, Luiz
Number eight, Luiz
Number nine, Luiz
Number ten, Luiz
Number eleven, Luiz
We all live in a David Luiz world, David Luiz world, David Luiz world
We all live in a David Luiz world, David Luiz world, David Luiz world
(and then it goes, Number one, Luiz . . . )
Agree, hope he continues this fine form after the break.
(chelsea fan) DAVID LUIZ!!
Nice Post BC I really enjoyed reading it. Luiz is the next generation brick wall of Chelsea defense we need 2 more luiz type defenders one who can play as CB & LB and one who can play as CB and RB.
But only sad is Torres. Even if he is playing well he is not scoring. I think its due to the fact that no one is providing or creating chances for him, so he has to do everything himself. Maybe return of benayoun will increase his spirit.
hiddink is a coach chelsea needs. he is a world class coach. terry, luiz ,cech ,mikel, essien remies drogba, lampard, kalou, maluoda, are players chelsea need.
Ronney was kept quiet to good extend by Luiz the other day at SB. We will miss him badly in the CL match up against MANU. Not sure if Alex can be off the same influence.
Is it just me who thinks Torres has been a good buy so far, i mean granted he hasant scored everytime he got the ball but he has been a very refreshing presence upfront, he has given rival defenders a lot to worry about so much so that it has really freed up our midfield, look at Essien, Ramires and especially Lampard.
Previously our front play was very predictable and static with the long ball up to Drogs which gave the opposition midfield enough time to come back in numbers, stifling us, but now they are so engrossed with Torres and his unpredictable pace that the attacks come quick and well distributed giving us multiple options while attacking. Yes Anelka too gives that aspect but he comes far too back far too many times for my liking, unlike Torres who likes to stay on the last defender.
Also our strikers look to add much more pourpose, Anelka ha the weight off his shoulders to find all the goal scoring opportunities himself, and Drogs looks much better esp coming on, but Kalou has been the most impressive of the lot he gets more time on the ball and looks sharper, i dont know if its Torres’s presence or the competition he brings but it sure is a relief to see our attacking play improve so dramatically.
Oh David Luiz, you are the love of my life,
Oh David Luiz, I’d let you shag my wife,
Oh David Luiz, I want curly hair too!
He’s here.
He’s there.
He’s got the curly hair.
it’s Sideshow Bob, it’s Sideshow Bob!
Sung to the chorus of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You”
I think it’s brilliant.,

I’m so bummed by the fact that he will not play in Champions League and just praying Alex will be fit to play against United.
I think Luiz also makes Terry much stronger. Today many teams have pivoting hold type midfielders (any team in a 4-2-3-1) and it helps because the formation is more fluid and can react better to an opponent. Both Terry and Luiz could be MF if they wanted. Both are comfortable playing high up the pitch, both are comfortable attacking, holding the ball, passing into the box, etc. Alone both are talented but together they can really play off of each other and give Chelsea an extra attacking outlet from the back. Sometimes teams keep a forward out wide to slow down Cole (like Eboue) and normally Chelsea have trouble when that occurs but now both Luiz or Terry could lead their team down the middle if the middle is too open.
Guys Is it true that Lucas Piazon has signed a pre-contract agreement to join Chelsea in January 2012.

ARAbLuEs,
It will be interesting to see how good he is. Always hard to tell how success at a young age will translate against the big boys.
Keith,
I think Luiz will really help Terry. Luiz has pace, terry doesn’t. Luiz will be able to cover ground quickly in a crisis. This will extend Terry’s career. His lack of pace won’t show as much, and his strengths — reading the game, tackling and heading — will last for a few more years.
ARAbLuEs,
It’s official http://www.chelseafc.com/page/LatestNews/0,,10268~2324419,00.html He is a very interesting prospect.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njyym0tpRbI&feature=player_embedded
I do think that Luiz will earn some penalties and some red cards in his time at Chelsea. He’s that kind of player.
wxwax,
You stole Manchester United’s Hargreaves song.
I think lewey has all the skills to play midfield and not necessarily a holding one but more as they say box to box…defend and score goals…but that would mean we have to get a new centreback…the 2 goals showed us he has the nose to score and special ones at that, not just tap ins…playing at the back has helped the team with his pace and great interception skills but equally bringing the ball out which Carvalio could do before he left to go to madrid…if we can get a couple more players like lewey we would be unplayable!

Just read this wonderful article on David, and you realise the guy is pure class on and off the field, god bless the lad, he’s already a true blue. KTBFFH
Just saw Neymar play at the Emigrant stadium. He is the player we need.
And above all Luiz is so passionate, look at his goal celebrations: he does it like he had been a Chelsea since his birth! I love him!
I just watched the match. You’re right. Neymar was fantastic.
He has tremendous speed, great agility, Brazilian technical skills, superb vision, great positional sense and he’s fearless. He’ll take the ball into a crowd expecting to emerge from the other side. His first goal was an off-balance bending shot around a defender to the far post. He drew a penalty off Charlie Adam with a great crossover to earn his second goal.
But.
He’s about as skinny as Ramires. He’ll get battered in Premier league penalty boxes. And he’s young and immature. He’s sporting a mohawk haircut. Strikers are known for their idiosyncrasies, but at 18 he’s a bit young to be so flashy.
He’ll cost a fortune. His talent is that obvious. I think it might be smart for Chelsea to pay the earth for him but let him stay another season in Brazil to bulk up and grow up.
Mano Menezes publicly stated he would welcome a move to England for Neymar. Chelsea are the most linked in England. However I believe, Neymar is better off honing his technical skills in Spain or Italy. Inter Milan and Real Madrid are the most likely targets. Jose needs a striker and so does Leonardo. Besides, Roman would go ape if Carlo asked for another 30m to spend on another striker after we just paid 50m for a guy who is yet to score. That is what Roman would actually process in his mind. I’m serious. Hours later you would see Carlo packing his bags. Neymar to Real Madrid this summer is what I am for but that is only if Jose doesn’t win anything which is highly doubtful.
I am more happy with what we already got (Paizon) than what we are trying to get (Neymar), but yes i would also love to see that hairdo being replicated in Blue fans! Let’s tap to the Samba beat, future is bright for us!
If it came down to Alexis Sanchez or Neymar, I might go with the former. I think Sanchez is a little more battle-ready having played in Serie A the last few years. He’s also older, but only by a few years. He’s also perfect for the 4-4-3 but could also solve some of our problems with attacking down the right wing. I think that last point is particularly prescient for the Blues as we don’t have a natural right-winger in the squad. The closest imitation is Bosingwa but he’s a fullback by trade and I’m convinced he’ll be sold in the summer anyway. Neymar would be an exciting addition but its a big risk to take him on. Sanchez is closer to a sure thing. I was very impressed with him in the World Cup last year.
Here’s a little JT quiz for the sharp minded.

Tremayne Craigg,
I don’t see that any honing of skills is needed.
He was the best player on a pitch shared by some 30 or so Internationals.
DanaBlue,
Managed only 3/10, need to upgrade my knowledge about our Captain Fantastic!
if we are thinking about building a team for the future and then be winners not just at home but in the CL then we have to get Neymar…in a few years what we pay now will be worth a mere pittance and .beside the kid could fill a few positions, one of which is the wing..or behind the main striker..I say pay the bucks and if need be, let him stay there there for another year
KarmaCW,
Don’t worry KarmaCW I only got 4/10 myself. I guess it’s back to the history books.
Wooow, got 7 :)
Ramires was allowed to roam further forward by Brazil against Scotland. He often found himself in the penalty box. He had a howler of a miss and a header that went over.
It just reaffirms what we’ve seen of his strengths and his weaknesses while playing for Chelsea. He can be devastating running forward with the ball. He runs and tackles with gusto. His passing is excellent, although not visionary. Interestingly, against Scotland he launched some quite good long balls that we don’t often see him try for Chelsea.
His weaknesses are few but consistent. He’s not clever in the box, a bit of a fish out of water. Technically he’s a bit behind the most gifted players. His shooting is highly suspect. And you can push him over sometimes, despite his fighting spirit.
I think Chelsea use him better than do Brazil. Although I do wish his club would find more ways to unleash him on those forward runs with the ball.
Carlo has said he could never manage Inter. His ties to Milan are too strong.
So why would Jose feel OK about managing Manchester United?
A Chelsea fan vents his anger at the potential betrayal. I agree with the writer’s premise; that for all his sweet words, Mourinho is essentially about himself.
http://chelsea.theoffside.com/chelsea/an-open-letter-to-jose-mourinho.html
Chelsea are rumored to be looking at a Santos star not named Neymar.
Paulo Henrique Ganso plays like a Brazilian Lampard. He’s an attacking central midfielder, perfect as the tip of a diamond. Fantastic skill on the ball, superb vision, a strong shot. Torres would feast on his through balls. The only question for me is whether he tackles and covers with enthusiasm.
http://youtu.be/K7qf0TGo45U
SCOLARI IS THE BIGGEST IDIOT IN FOOTBALL HISTORY AS HE SAID:
“I also tried a switch to release Drogba for Adriano, because Adriano was having some problems at Inter. I told the directors that I could manage his behaviour problems.”
Totally unfair comparison. Carlo’s association with Milan span across 12-13 years. As a Milan player, he was part of their most decorated team and won two league titles and two European titles. As a manager, he won one league title and two champions league titles. It’s a relationship of about 12-13 years as a player first and then as a manager.
Jose Mourinho, on the other hand, managed us for just 3 seasons. He could be sentimental and all that but he’s a professional. I’ll have no issues if he manages the Manchester clubs or Liverpool.
Leonardo is forgiven for moving from Milan to Inter. Why? He’s young and he’s got a long career ahead of him. Same as Jose and unlike Carlo.
Ask Fergie if he’d manage Liverpool. He’d say no. And ask Pep if he wants to manage Real Madrid. He ‘might’ because it’s project and a challenge. That’s how young professionals look at it.
We can try to run down Jose all day long, but he’d prevail.
Wow.
Maybe it’s a good thing the manager doesn’t have complete control over personnel. That would have been a disaster.
I think we should get over with the myth of ‘he’s a skinny, thin, light player who’ll find it tough in premier league’. The premier league has players of all types – tall and short, fat and skinny, heavy and light.
If Fletcher can play in midfield, anyone can play anywhere. The strength that is required in premier league is actually the mental strength more than the physical strength.
Unfortunately, the physical strength factor is overrated and exaggerated.
For me, Neymar is fine as he is. Will be a great addition. We’re looking at life after Drogba and Anelka. Torres, Sturridge, Neymar and Kalou. Cheers!
chelsea gotta get neymar, sanchez and hamsik/sneijder/pastore………tts all….for transfer…would be better if we get aguero is any of anelka and drogba is leaving and van der wiel if bosingwa leaves..agree?
Neymar is clearly an exciting player with a lot of potential. But I think he might be over-hyped. As the respected Brazilian football expert Tim Vickery (of the BBC) mentioned, a lot of the fuss over him owes to good performances in Brazil’s version of the Carling Cup. He tore up weak opposition but hasn’t replicated that against bigger clubs in more prominent competitions. Also, for the senior national team he looked great but let’s remember his best performances have been against the USA and Scotland. The latter, in particular – Charlie Adam aside – are total rubbish. Ashley Young would run circles around them. Also, I think Neymar receives a boost in hype owing to the fact that he’s Brazilian. There’s a positive bias toward Brazilian players that’s obvious to any fan of the game. Just read Soccernomics by Simon Kuper if you’re in disagreement. If the Slovenian team played Scotland and one of their guys delivered the exact same performance as Neymar it would be received with a whimper. But if you’re Brazilian and put in some good performances you can expect lavish praise by all. Look, Neymar might turn out to a world-beater, but he’s 18, hasn’t really proven himself against top-class opposition and the transfer price demanded for him is outrageous. There’s better value out there than him.
I can sense that the Brazilian heroes that we already have would help a lot in landing Neymar, we also have a good number of Portugese players!
Yes.
But.
Surrounded by Brazilian stars, he was clearly the best man on the pitch against Scotland. I’m including Ramires in that, don’t forget.
So, measured against his peers on the Brazilian team, he still stood out as something special.
Yes and no.
Hernandez is a small man. And he’s obviously doing very well.
But the physical nature of the Premier League is not exaggerated. It’s real. It took Ramires, who’s a physical player himself, 2/3 of a season to adjust to it. He’s only just finding his game.
Other Brazilians have floundered in England. Look at Robinho.
So the adjustment is a serious consideration.
xerxesk,
and he proves by quoting this.
wxwax,
Physicality of the premier league is real. Judging whether certain players would fit into premier league, based on their physical appearance is what overrates or exaggerates it.
It is totally possible for a big guy like Julio Baptista to fail in the premier league. To deal with the physicality of the premier league you’ve got to have the right mindset and technique. Whether a player is skinny or otherwise shouldn’t matter.
The problem for Brazilians (Luiz is an exception) is the change in culture, language, weather and the consequent home sickness. They have more than enough technique to deal with premier league and its physicality. See how Barca is able to dominate English teams. Beyond a point, technique can easily deal with physicality.
Their settling down mostly has got to do with their relocation and less to do with physicality. Getting accustomed to the playing style in a league is a common denominator across all leagues that all players will have to deal with anyway.
Barca have never played Premier League match refereed by a Football Association ref.
I’m not giving you the “cold Tuesday in Stoke” line.
But it’s a fact that Champions League refereeing is far more touchy than Premier League refereeing. So it’s a mistake to judge Barca’s performance against English clubs purely on their recent form in the CL.
But I think the point is that Barca, despite fielding a team of tiny guys – practially a bunch of dwarves – are able to not only beat bigger, more physically imposing teams but completely dominate them. And I don’t think those wins and that dominance come down to sensitive refereeing. Barca just outplay the opposition, plain and simple.
Having said all that I do agree that there’s a degree of physicality in the Premier League that’s not apparent in any other major league. Micheal Ballack said the Premier League was the most physically demanding and physically draining challenge of his career. It’s a rough and tumble league with a breakneck pace with tackles coming in fast and furious. Every new player needs to adjust to it. Some do well, some others do crap. I think it helps to be a bigger, more well built guy rather than skinny and slight.
Also, for the record, I think Barca would lose at Stoke if the game was played on a bitterly cold night in January and Leo Messi came out on the pitch legless and Xavi played with a blindfold.
GOOD LUCK TO INDIA!
we’re talking cricket here aren’t we? £50 on India.
Play one match and Barcelona would be fine. Their usual dominant selves.
Play an entire season and Barcelona’s tiny players would not be fine. There’s not a doubt in my mind that Barcelona would lose more than a handful of games if they played in a league where bad breath didn’t get whistled for a foul.
La Liga is notoriously whistle happy. The Champions League is a bit rougher, but not by much.
For a player like Ballack, who plays in a league very similar to England’s rough-and-tumble, to put the EPL at the top says a great deal.
All of this began by my writing that Neymar would benefit from a stronger physique to cope with the demands of the Premier League. Could he prosper as a skinny guy? Absolutely. It’s been done and is being done.
But would his odds of a happy career in England be increased by bulking up a bit? There really isn’t any doubt about that.
Congrats BC to the Indian win in the ICC ODI over Pakistan….
I needed some true competitive sport during the football interlull… and tho never have watched a cricket match before in my life I actually enjoyed it … was quite exciting… tho the Pakistani outfielders butter-fingers display and their batsmen’s conservative and non-aggresive batting made it much easier for India
I am so happy that i won’t mind even if India loses in the final!

JoseHoliday,
Your making it sound like football. In football, you can have an attacking philosophy yet still be safe at the back. In cricket, however, you must pace yourself until you get settled in. Usually after 20 runs for top class players like Tendulkar or West Indian Legend Lara (I am from the West Indies, although I support England, Australia and South Africa.) I’m rooting for Sri Lanka because India beat us. We could have repeated the 2007 final (played in my country) if it weren’t for Tendulkar (I have an autographed MRF from him). If you go all out, you can get out easily unless your settled. GOOO SRI LANKA! This makes me feel like playing Cricket 2007 now.
Real might give ?15 million pounds for Drogba? Please sell him immediately!
Ha! A busy week at office and in cricket would come to an end soon. Since I’ve seen that there some cricket-related comments below, let me also sneak in with mine.
I grew up loving cricket. I grew up idolising Sachin Tendulkar. I don’t watch cricket like I used to (5 days in a stadium anyone?) but this has not changed my admiration and reverence to Sachin, who in my opinion, all things considered, is the greatest cricketer ever. I’m sure he’ll also find a place in the list of best sportsmen ever, if only cricket is widely played and more recognised worldwide.
When India take on Sri Lanka tomorrow, the whole nation is expecting, not just hoping, India to win the world cup. And many of us want India to win the world cup tomorrow because that would be a jewel in the crown for Sachin. When Sachin made his debut as a 16-year old, I was a 12-year old. Even before he made his debut I was following him in the domestic circuit and became a big fan ever since I saw him play in a exhibition match (he was 15 years then) where he took on Pakistan and demolished them.
Ever since, he’s had many ups and downs, more ups than downs. I still remember back in those days, how my mood and emotions were directly proportional to what was happening to Sachin. Even after I turned to football, the only reason why I’m still watching cricket is because of this man. He’s my real hero! If there’s ever a role model sportsman, it’s him.
Here’s hoping Sachin Tendulkar gets to touch and lift the trophy tomorrow! Even if he doesn’t, this takes nothing away from outstanding commitment to Indian cricket and excellent contribution to world cricket and unlimited joy and excitement to cricket lovers – all for 22 years! World cup or not, he’s the best.
And yes, respect to Shahid Afridi & Pakistan! Afridi led his team superbly. Contributed consistently. Gracious in defeat. For once, Pakistan looked like a professional and respectable outfit with no silly tamashas. He should be a proud man, Afridi! Would have supported Pakistan to beat Sri Lanka had they progressed.
WOW….after all the hype and anxiety, the wait is finally over for us…we have signed Nyemar for 24 million pounds. Now, we won’t need to spend on Aguero or Lukaku or Dzagoev! Let us now buy a midfielder and a right back. Willian or Pastore or Kagawa or Rodwell or Sneijder or Modirc (to see if Rednapp can really resist 1 billion pounds!) for midfielder and Van Der Wiel at the right back. Then we are done!
I am so happy that Neymar is finally with us, so excited to see the Brazilian samba. Our new spine: Luiz…Ramires…..Neymar! And Piazon can chip in whenever possible! Let us celebrate…we have all the reason to be excited about the coming seasons!
I would like to see the back of Bosingwa, Malouda, Kalou and Drogba. We may call Sturridge back, and may be Jack Cork as well if we fail to get a new midfielder! I still regret on having let Stoch go, but let us move on now.
And more importantly, Benayoun is back and hopefully he will spark Torres now!
I am so happy….shivering in excitement!
Happy Fools day huh , KarmaCW ?
And Traymane, sorry me total novice concerning cricket but……
and to BC and all the Indians on the blog…… may you taste sweet cricket victory and glory tomorrow….!
me will watch too !
JoseHoliday,
Since everyone knew i was trying to fool around, i am virtually fooled as many times as the readers who caught me :(
But let us hope and pray that we will get hold of another fancy hairdo!
Nice to see Banayoun played 20 minutes for Israel against Georgia.
He’s not a dominant player but he has (had) quickness and some guile. He was good at linking with the forwards. It’s late in the season, but it’s great to see him fit again. He was missed.

This is interesting Guidiola (barcelona’s coach) is saying he will not overstay at a club with a huge hint he will go when his contract expires at end of 2012..isn’t carlo’s contract finishing then as well….mourinho is the best in many ways but having rubbed up red rom the wrong way ……it might be one for the conspiracy theorists to think…well maybe who our next coach will be…which would tick all the boxes for us!
I guess that would work, bringing Guardiola when his contract expires but that makes the assumption that Ancelotti will be here next season which he might not (its looking quite 50/50) and in that case we aren’t going to bring someone in on a short-term contract. Mourinho probably won’t move clubs this summer it would be crazy for Real Madrid to let him go so early.
Guardiola’s interview was given on April 1st. Who knows?
wxwax,
THE MOST EPIC APRIL FOOLS JOKE LOL! Kudos to ChelseaMad. They even beg you to comment.
