Let’s play a game.
We’ll call the game ‘What if?” We’ll pretend that certain things will happen. Then we’ll ask you a question.
What If #1
What if Carlo Ancelotti leaves Chelsea at the end of the season?
Football rumors are, as the Americans say, a dime a dozen. Cheap. Easily found. But rarely true.
That’s how I feel about the Carlo Ancelotti to Roma rumor. It doesn’t make sense. Roma is in the process of being sold. Companies don’t usually make new hires when ownership is changing hands. The Italians who own Roma are in severe debt. So it’s hard to imagine them committing money to Carlo. He doesn’t come cheap.
The American who seems likely to be the new owner isn’t well-versed in football. He may not know Carlo Ancelotti from Fernando Alonso. Why, when he has so much on his plate, would he be courting Ancelotti when the current season isn’t over and he doesn’t have the keys?
And yet. In the world of football rumors, isolated stories come and go like farts at a bean feast. But when a rumor has legs, when it keeps getting repeated, there’s often some sort of substance behind it.
The Ancelotti story has legs. In the past three weeks we’ve heard two stories coming out of Italy. And now Sports illustrated is reporting that Ancelotti and Roman Abramovich have come to an arrangement. That Carlo will step down at the end of the season.
This has an air of plausibility to it. Abramovich has allowed two other men to quit before they were fired, Peter Kenyon and Frank Arnesen. It may be that he has the same respect for Ancelotti as he does the other two men, and is willing to to let him quit rather than fire him.
So despite my wish that it weren’t true, I’m starting to get the feeling that with all this smoke, there might be a fire burning under Ancelotti’s ass.
What If #2
What If Jose Mourinho leaves Madrid at the end of the season?
Since the turn of the century Real Madrid has had 12 managers. That’s more than one a year for the last decade! It’s the exception, not the rule, for Real Madrid to keep the same manager for two consecutive seasons.
Jose Mourinho hasn’t exactly endeared himself to the club. He’s had a running battle with club General Director Jorge Valdano over personnel. Ominously, President Florentino Perez hasn’t publicly backed his manager. Mourinho is winning, but he’s not winning enough to keep up with Barca. In November he was humiliated 5-0 (the worst loss of his career) to the only opponent Madrid fans care about.
He may also be starting to alienate Real’s fans. It’s interesting that Mourinho did not become a sympathetic figure when someone stabbed one of his security guards at La Coruna. Instead the papers wondered whether his non-stop inflammatory talk was responsible. In other words, was he to blame?
It has to be said that with Madrid still alive in two cups and with a second match against Barcelona upcoming, there’s plenty of opportunity for Mourinho to salvage things.
But these are not good trends at a club that has the impulse control of a serial killer when it comes to its managers.
The Question
If Ancelotti leaves and if Mourinho is canned, would you want Mourinho back at Chelsea?
I guess some Chelsea fans will think this is a trick question. Why wouldn’t they want him back? In 2005 it had been 50 years since Chelsea had won its one and only League title. Mourinho did it in a single season. Then he did it again the next year. Add a FA Cup, two League Cups and a Charity Shield and Mourinho had brought Chelsea the greatest run of success in club history.
So it’s a no brainer, right?
Maybe not. Mourinho is celebrated because he brought Chelsea success it had never had before. But we’ve since discovered that he’s not the only one who can brings trophies to Stamford Bridge. Carlo Ancelotti proved that.
Mourinho prefers a style of football that most people find boring. The secret to his success is a strong defense and what he calls “transition.” Mourinho believes that the opponent is most vulnerable at the moment possession changes. That’s why his teams score so many goals on breakaways and long balls. He doesn’t value time of possession. He values quick strikes. His Chelsea teams had big target men upfront. But never a classic midfield creative play-maker — he didn’t need one.
It can be argued that once Abramovich insisted on more attractive football, Mourinho quit because he couldn’t deliver it. Trying to change his style, he had a stuttering start to both the Premier League season and the Champions League when he abruptly quit in September 2007. Yes, there were power issues involved. But usually unmentioned is Mourinho’s inability to successfully deliver what Roman wanted on the pitch.
Mourinho is a selfish man. He puts his own interests above everything else. It’s a myth that he always stands by his players. He’s worried about his own image first and foremost. Here’s what he said in January of 2007.
“In a remarkable and wide-ranging attack on his own team after Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Fulham, Mourinho identified Andrei Shevchenko, Salomon Kalou and Shaun Wright-Phillips as three who “cannot perform at a high level”.”
How about this, in December of 2006?
“…maybe the players are not such good players. What can you do with Paulo (Ferreira), with Geremi? Nothing. The players have no qualities adapted to the game opponents are playing against us.”
Last week, former Mourinho stalwart Claude Makelele put the spotlight on Mourinho’s selfish nature.
“He is calculated, cruel and ambitious. He used to keep players away from the spotlight so he could take all the fame…. He forgot about the players and he just took all the credit for himself. No-one was allowed to be more famous than him.”
Strong words. But with the ring of truth.
And even if he came back, how long could Chelsea count on having Mourinho? He changes clubs like Imelda Marcos changes shoes. He wants to be at the richest clubs with the greatest histories. He’s been making goo-goo eyes at Alex Ferguson’s job for four years. You do the math. The day Ferguson retires, Mourinho be at Manchester United’s door. At dawn.
So with all of that in mind, here’s the question.

I see an ‘agenda’ behind this post. As always you’re letting go your cuddly bear Carlo like he’s a saint and found an easy prey in JM. The article is heavily biased towards one side.
It’s very very easy to be critical of JM. In fact, he himself makes it easy for us. There are millions of article about JM’s playing style, JM’s sense of self importance, JM’s public relations etc. And it’s very very difficult to be critical of cuddly bear Carlo. He makes it difficult for us.
These are probably polar opposite characters. While you’re offering both, it’s only fair to remind the pros and cons of Carlo. You’ve spent all your time on only the cons of one man – JM.
My answer is indeed a no-brainer: Get TSO back. I want to see my players play like warriors. I want my team to be feared all over again. I want to be able to say ‘be afraid, be very afraid’.
If Ancelotti does leave, which I think very much depends on our performance in the Champions League, then who could better fill the void than Mourinho??
Hiddink? Vialli? Zola? Rijkaard? Van Basten? Van Gaal? Hughes?
Other than Guardiola, which is an impossible dream, there is nobody so suitable for the job, or with a CV as good as José’s. That’s just a fact.
But I would hate for him to come unless he has the full backing of the club and roman

Anyway, I have very much enjoyed Carlo’s two seasons, and I hope he remains for at least one more year.
BlueChampion,
But BC… As big a fan of TSO as I am, I really feel Carlo has done well enough to keep the job. And JM is a selfish man. I don’t trust that because he loves Chelsea, he won’t want SAF’s job.
Just because I could date a supermodel doesn’t mean I do, if I see her eyeing the neighbor I hate across the fence.
Adonis,
I’m not saying we should replace Carlo with TSO. I thought the question is what if Carlo and JM both get sacked?!
Well , having him back would certainly be better than being without Carlo….and floundering for years without trophies….
But after reading the above article methinks :
1. JM’s football wasn’t always pretty but remember when Robben and Duff were on the wings it was break-taking………but….. and we haven’t had wingers of that quality since…….
2. He is a selfish bum…. but players and fans mostly sided with him when it mattered… when getting trophies….. and anyway Makalele ( who by the way was one of my favourite JM era players ) was famous for the lurid tabloid sex and kiss-tell stories. and needed respite by drinking and joking about the boss (who hasn’t done that before ? )
3. Anyways , …. and in an era when great management skills are lauded in society… why can’t JM have his bit of fame too ? It’s so different from long ago when only the players ( especially the forwards were remembered ) .. does anybody remember the names of the guys who managed Pele ?
4. the argument about JM’s PR style driving potential fans away and making the club hated doesn’t hold water either….. I think lotsa guys paid more attention to the Serie A after JM moved to Inter… and just because a team has a lot of fans who fill it stadium doesn’t mean it’s ” loved”. For the record.. I don’t love Aresy, ManUre or BarcKs …. but not because of JM but cos they are Chelsea’s enemies.
5. And I think it would be very very difficult for ManUre and their fans to have JM as manager with the same power over things like Ol’ red-nose ……… JM knows he is not revered by the ManUre fan-shite……. it would be like crossing over to the Dark Side for them……JM is the only man who has stuck it to them in this decade…. it would be too much for their pride to swallow……their conquerer now become their master !
6. JM to Citeh is not impossible either… but could be a career embarassment for JM.. he may be selfish but he ain’t foolish… the Citeh raggedy-rabble collection of stars isn’t in any phase of development at all and on the contrary will be on the wane after 1-2 years… Mancini don’t have that much pull or power at the club .. he’s just another employee… they can’t even compete that far is Europa league proves that eh ?
7 . JM back at his spiritual home at Stamford Bridge would be good…. maybe he should stay at Real a bit more years… he’s not done his business there yet… he’d have to win the La Liga at least twice with them before his job is done there…and he should…
8. At Chels, JM was revered mostly ( except by guys like JoeBlue .. hey no offence ) and we know that his team would never have been as shaky in the rough patch we’ve has this year……. anyways maybe he’ll / change/evolve too I think he already has concerning football too…..JM has had Sneider and Ozil as great creative and flair midfielders.. so I don’t see why he can’t play a more eye-candy combo at the Bridge either….
but Carlo’s a decent man… a good man.. I wouldn’t want him to fail in his career and job to take Chelsea to the top.
So my reply is : Yes, let’s have JM back ( but a more seasoned and gracious one in about 2-3 years )
All managers and players are selfish, just like you and me. If we someone is more selfish than the other, I’d call it hypocrisy. If I’m as gifted as Mourinho and if I have the same aspiration as he has, I’d have done the same things. It’s a job for him and he’s clarified many times in interviews what his ambitions are. A man of his ambitions cannot stay in one place for 10 years and win 1 league title (like Arsene Wenger). He wins, he moves on. I have no problem with it.
JoseHoliday,
JH – Very well written. Loved it.
The moment you write about JM, good or bad (people mostly don’t write good about him) there’s so much buzz and commotion, something the man’s always capable of.
Yes, i would be very happy if mourinho come to chelsea. His a good coach he know how to motivate player. Love you the speacial one.

At the end of the day the ONLY THING THAT MATTERS in professional sport is WINNING, that’s it, end of story …and or the other stuff you mentioned is TOTALLY IRRELEVANT…one fact about mourinho is that he is a PROVEN WINNER who can handle big egos and is constantly up to date with trends….arsenal play pretty football but haven’t won a cup for 7 years…so it’s a no brainer unless you can find a coach who can guarantee winning + pretty football at the same time…I can’t think of anyone who fits that bill that….carlo has a lot to answer from many perspectives which I wouldn’t go into right now but I wouldn’t lay all the success at his feet with the double as it was a hugely talented squad with lots of depth and our main opponents were well down on their previous levels from the past…..allowing this squad to essentially self-destruct over a 4 month period needs a please explain as the football they were playing was light years below their abilities…on being nice or a total bastard look at red nose laughing at leaving berbatov on the bench who was then sulking about it….I’m certain the manure board would rather have a nasty winner than a nice guy loser…get Mourinho back to start a new winning project..rebuilding the team as this one has reached it’s use by date!
Not sure if u were really asking the question or giving your opinion about it..this article shouls hav ebeen titled
” Why not to rehire Mourinho’ ..dude get life.. Jose is a winner and people will always crib about everything he does ….as for me I have nothing against Ancelloti ( other than how hes wasted this season the opportunity he had to Sturridge/Kakuta more playing time …..) but Jose Mourinho. anyday mate …if not for any other reason then just the fact that he can beat Barca playing with 10 men is reason enough for me how many managers can even claim they can do that?
There’s a reason for that.
I think the poll will be extremely one-sided. Like a good bookie, I’m doing my best to split the bets.
The poll is now open.
You can vote. Sorry about that, I closed it by mistake.
Mourinho’s return would be a great thing, I really doubt if he would be available at the end of the season. Unless he gets RM the UCL of course. Coming to the question again, I think we have moved on and moving away from Mou days. Mou needs Terry Lamps DD Essien A.Cole , all ‘his’ players are getting old and our recent signings agree with this fact. With more Brazilian influence coming into the team and if Carlo indeed gets sacked or leaves, perhaps we could let others have a chance before we commit to Mouinho. Even Mou has to start a fresh project , so may be this time he may not deliver instantly for us. IMHO barring some stubborn thinking of Carlo he has done a good job n secured ramires n luiz n torres. the first two r showing the future n its matter of time torres will start banging goals. we had the best season last year under carlo, so his attacking philosophy with beautiful football definitely works in england. so i would give one more opportunity to some one in carlos attacking flair like rijkaard who built todays barca style in them ( all guardiola had is a fit n matured messi, he changed nothing out of rijkaards style). Anyway it all depends on Mourinhos season and how close they can come winning la liga, UCL. the questions are always there if the beautiful football can succeed in england and i think it can, infact arsenal could have reached that zenith if not for wengers stupidness….
WXWAX,
I know you could be one cheeky bugger :)
Whats the point for playing beautiful football but not winning the game?
Long balls ,penalties, last minute goal wadever.I dont mind if we play ugly as long as we win the game.
Yea fighting spirit. Fight for every single ball. Thats wad i hope to see.
I want Jose back if possible.
Hee hee!
Personally, I’m of two minds.
If Mourinho were to come back, I think he’d stay until he won the Champions League. So that would be good.
On the other hand, unless he changes his act he can’t stay anywhere for very long. There’s too much drama, too much noise. People get tired of it. If he’s ever interested in stability, he’ll need to find a way to create that “us versus them” mentality without waging pitched battles with refs, other managers, the league, UEFA, his owners… every single week.
When Mourinho was with Chelsea I was a blind follower. He won. That was enough. His players loved him. That was even better.
Now that I’ve seen his act at two other clubs, I’m a bit more cynical about him. Frankly, I even question the sincerity of his oft-stated “devotion” to Chelsea and Inter. I tend to think it’s all self-serving guff.
Regardless, he’s one hell of a manager.
well the fact most people would take mourinho back tells us nobody is impressed by carlo…especially after the 4 months where a very talented group went from looking as though they would win the league by january to nobodies overnight and giving up their crown in an embarrasing wimper….so if it’s carlo out and not mourinho…then who?
We dont need amourinho. We hav a good coach in carlo now. He is a good person too who does care about the players and the supporters. Also Carlo is a winner like mourinho with a stylish brand of football. I think our judgment on carlo based on the poor performences of this season is too harsh and too early. We should take the example of man united. Sir alex took a long time before he won anything. So we should be patient with carlo, should give him enough time to adapt and install his brand of football. Let’s wait two more seasons and then judge. Another most important point is our new given preference to the academy. For developing the academy and bringing the young players we need a manager who can work with youngsters without frustrating them. I dont know if maurinho were ever able to bring a academy graduate to first team. So let’s wish carlo to continue than getting Maurinho for a short spell.
I, like most people would like Carlo to stay. I think it’s about time someone built a legacy at the club. Roman will forever be linked to our club and it’s about time we gave a manager the chance to forge a unique history for us. It’s what makes teams feared in some quarters. It also gives these teams some clout over officials and even UEFA level. Personally, i want Carlo to stay for some considerable time and build a solid legacy, but somehow i fear he is not strong-willed enough. In times of crisis , he has looked lost and hasn’t inspired me with confidence. I’ve always said it’s easy to manage Chelsea when the team is playing well, but a manager at this level has to show his mettle when the team is in a slump and i am afraid Carlo hasn’t given me hope in those times.
However bringing Jose back? now that is a tougeh one for me. I liked Ze when he was with us but i dont think the hierarchy at the club are just dumb to have let him go . he is a fantastic manager but comes with a baggage. i dont think it will happen. He isn’t coming back. However if there is supposed to be a younger manager to replace Carlo then it should be Andres Villas Boas of Porto. He was once with Ze at the Bridge and knows the club’s culture.
No one, i repeat No one can n will ever do what JM has done in stamford bridge. Imagin 50 yrs without trophies but when he came 2 chelsea, he changed everything. What a coach. You see, i don’t care about what anyone thinks about JM you know. To me he only has what it takes to be in stamford bridge. A question was asked by JoseHoliday, he said “…does anybody remembers the names of the guys who managed Pele…”, seriously i don’t even want 2 remember. Don’t you think that if you were 2 be in his shoes you wud do dasame thing, he’s got da potentials, da brain, he knows how 2 deliver what is required of him, he is proud of his job so does it matter what he does. To me, if CA should leave 2day, JM should be da one 2 take over without any waste of time. Mourinho, you are da BEST.
WE GOT MAN UNITED!!!
Incredible!!!!!
Madrid vrs Spuds
Barca got Shakhtar
Inter v Schalke
Like someone said this draw is EPIC. wow. If we r going to win the Champions League then wow, this will be incredible.
matblue,u think its a gd draw for us?
I am very pleased with the draws, I believe we can scape through ManUnited, we know them as they know us. Rome will be on our mind and we’ll not let that happen again. The PL is guarantee for them and all we have now is CL. We will be motivated more than them. It could be Chelsea V Madrid Or Barca for Final. But I will prefer Barca not Morinho Madrid. I am damn sure Morinho can not lose Final of CL
Since there are so many if’s and but’s, the only way I see JM’s return to the club as being positive, is if he is here for 5,6 years at least. A smash and grab of the Champions League in one season, only to abandon us to greener pastures, would do harm to the future of the club. I’m not prepared to have two more seasons of Grant/Scolari after JM leaves. He is such a character that after he leaves, the vacuum he leaves behind is immense, enough to get anyone who succeeds him fired. And even CL winners (Benitez) and WC winners (Scolari) can’t replicate his work. Ancelotti has done a finer job than anyone. So if Jose brings with him all that baggage, deposits it, and leaves after a couple of years, then no thanks–other coaches can bring a fine, esteemed team such as ours, the CL. Hiddink should’ve done it, if not for ovrebo that imbecile. So if he’s here for a long time, great. But make no mistake… I love JM as a manager and esteem him more than I love and esteem any other in the world. But I love Chelsea more. If he will do more harm than good, which is a possibility, then no thank you.
About the draw… Let’s take care of business boys. I laugh to think at Vidic’s thoughts, having to face El Niño twice more this season. We can definitely come out of this half all the way to the finals.
KTBFFH.
Very well reasoned and written. Like it!. However there is one important element regarding TSO which you have failed to include in your (slightly biased?) comparison to Ancellotti.
TSO is Chelsea – meaning he’s a supporter/leader/ frontman/fighter. I believe that he personifies the “fighting spirit” of Chelsea. He “bleeds” Chelsea – he is our “Champion”. Ancelloti is a nice guy – as were Ranieri and Grant, but since when do Chelsea do “nice”?
Has a duck got a tight ass? Simples!
I feel the same way you do.
Sadly, Alex Ferguson and David Moyes are the exception, not the rule. These days both managers and their team owners seem to expect turnover on a regular basis.
And Abramovich is a man in a hurry.
But I’d like to see Ancelotti stick around. I don’t see anyone better out there. I hope the Sports illustrated story is wrong, I hope that Carlo and Roman haven’t come to an arrangement that merely allows Carlo to finish the season.
Thanks!
My question is, if a man is a called a “supporter/leader/ frontman/fighter” but leaves after two or three seasons, is he really?
Even in his first term at Chelsea, wasn’t it clear that Mourinho was already looking at other jobs? I certainly got that feeling.
So 3 more games against Manchester United this season!
What a climax!
Playing at home for the first leg is a serious disadvantage. But at least it’s not Barca nor Madrid. Manchester united can be beaten. Won’t be easy, but it can be done.
The CL draw means Barca and Madrid would play each other in a semi-final.
It also means that if Chelsea beat United, they face Schalke-Inter, first leg away. That would be great.
Lets look at carlo’s pedigree…yes he has won 2 CL’s but then he was at ac milan for a long term, 8 years with just one league to his credit, yes one…yet he had HUGELY talented squads year after year and if not convinced look at those playing rosters he had….ring any similarities to us…lets look at our last game against the danes and can anyone be really impressed with how we played….what worries me is that they had an equal share of possession and actually had it for long spells which agaisnt a quality opponent means death….also don’t forget they hit the post and were a team who have basically haven’t had competitive fixture for 2 months because of their winter break…..Mourinho is a 1 CONSISTENT WINNER 2 HIS TEAMS FIGHT TO THE DEATH 3 INSTILLS A HOME GROUND ADVANTAGE SECOND TO NONE…all of which carlo can’t match…on time by the season end carlo will have had enough time and by then we can see what has been won or lost and the manner it was achieved…mourinho’s one drawback is his ability to stay put in any one place for too long…but then maybe he might grow up in that respect in a second coming to us…big test for us this week and I suspect textbook negativity from both with little thinking outside the square..
