English premier league is not an easy place to play football. More so for the non-English. Even more so for the non-Europeans. It’s almost a given that the new foreign players take at least a season to get adjusted to premier league. You have loads of examples of players who struggled at the start and went on to become fantastic premier league players.
When Ramires arrived at Chelsea, we all felt this way. At least I felt this way – Ramires being Brazilian and all that would take his time to settle down in the new league, would get pushed around, would try hard to win a place in our star studded midfield, would be impacted by his lack of English fluency and would be homesick soon.
Watch Ramires today and you wouldn’t know he joined this season. You can’t make out that he could have communication issues. He doesn’t get bullied or pushed around. His ride wasn’t so easy from the start. Yes, he had his settling time but how soon he’s become a fantastic player for us is a testimony to his mental, physical and technical abilites as a football player. Let’s be honest here. He’s settled down sooner than Essien or Mikel.
I was excited to know that Ramires was joining us. I had seen glimpses of him in the confederation cup. He was very impressive with his link-up play and especially his skill and pace. I used to think that he could be a winger forced to play deeper. I also had seen him in the world cup. My respect for Ramires only grew.
When we bought him, I was wondering why we would buy another midfielder and why not a winger. We all thought that our midfield is very strong as it is and that we need some real good players only on the wings. Ramires’purchase, in a way, could have indicated us on what Carlo was trying to do in the long run. Months later, we can vouch that to call Ramires a midfielder is an understatement. He is many things into one. He could be playing in the same position most of the times but he is capable of playing in various roles. More than anything, he is a very intelligent footballer. I must say, it’s a joy to watch Ramires play.
You could be saying that I’m judging on him a little too soon. But I call it as I see it. He’s played brilliantly well for us at a time when the whole team was just going through the worst patch in more than a decade. Imagine what contribution Ramires could have made last season if he was part of the 103-goal record making adventure. With what I’ve seen so far, I had already said that he’s the top contender for the Chelsea player of the season award.
Ramires brings a lot to our team. He’s got the spirit that we Chelsea fans would love to see. He’s committed and he wants to win and he doesn’t want to settle for anything less. I love that quality in him. He’s got some frightening pace which he doesn’t use very often. Blended with his ability to dribble and beat men, his pace is a massive weapon. Our midfielders are not pacy – be it Lampard, Essien or Mikel.
Lampard is a classic box-to-box midfielder not because of his pace but because of his ability to read the game and the ability to position himself intelligently. You can say the same about Essien. Mikel operates in a small area so he doesn’t need pace. Basically, none of our midfielders’ game is dependent on pace. This is where Ramires brings in a new dimension. Not that he relies on pace but he’s able to surprise opponents and thereby create opportunities that would not have been otherwise possible.
I must say that I thought he would be similar to one of our midfielders but you know what he is quite different than Lampard, Essien and Mikel. These days Lampard is always double marked. When Lampard is heavily marked if Essien doesn’t get forward enough, that creates a void for us in the attacking midfield and results in not creating enough chances. I think Essien’s still not sure what his position on the pitch is. We’ve not helped him too. He’s played in various roles and positions but we haven’t got the best out of his attacking abilities.
I think Mikel must realise that he may not be a usual starter as he used to be. There is competition for places. And this should be true for the Terrys, Lampards and Drogbas too. Remember, Benayoun will be back at some point in time this season. We’re certainly going to play a two striker-four midfielder formation. The players that need to fight for these four places would be Lampard, Essien, Mikel, Ramires, Benayoun, Malouda, Zhirkov, Josh McEachran – what a lovely squad we’ve got!
Every team is built on certain key players in the middle of the pitch. Like Jose Mourinho picked Lampard to be the fulcrum, we need to choose our fulcrum for the next generation. Ramires is stll a young player who can take the mantle from Lampard. Not now, but certainly when the time arrives. Of course, this is not any reflection of Essien and his past, present and future contribution to us. It’s just that I feel that Ramires is better suited to be the fulcrum around which the team functions. I’d consider Lampard and Ramires to have more flair than Essien and I consider this to be an important factor to play that talismanic role. When JM came to Chelsea, Lampard was 26. Ramires is still a young player. Most may not realise that Ramires and Mikel are of the same age.
I hear what you say. He’s hardly played a full season. There’s no guarantee if he could be long-term player. How long before Spanish biggies come calling for him. Spain would be like second home for the Latin Americans for various very valid reasons. We don’t know what he is, injury-wise. We don’t know if he’s enjoying his time at Chelsea. But I have this thing called hope.
I always thought that Essien would spend all his career at Chelsea. Similarly I believe that the core bunch of Chelsea players would never leave Chelsea unless we sell them – Terry, Lampard, Essien, Cech, Drogba – yes, I think so. I’d love to add Ramires to this list. I wish and hope he has a long Chelsea career. I can see that Ramires and Josh will be the future of Chelsea midfield supported by ever-dependable Essien. Carlo wasn’t too far away when he said players like Torres, Ramires and Luiz will be the future of Chelsea. In fact, Torres (forward), Ramires (midfield) and David Luiz (defence) are three strategic signings made with the future in mind. These are the players that are expected to carry Chelsea to the next half decade, at least.
I’m already a big fan of Ramires as I’ve already included him in my special list of current Chelsea players that I’d never want to part with. I hope that he continues his form and truly ends up to be our player of the season!

although i don’t have high hopes for the current season in any form, i’m very excited to see what the future holds for chelsea. it’s exciting to think that our currently young and benched players like josh, kalou, and ramires might be the future old guard of the team.
And he’s got a sweet smile :)
I love this guy too and i feel utterly bitter to have said bad things about him during his first few games. I am sure he will shine brighter! And i hope he is not injured, nothing about him nowhere! I am just so worried!
Great Article ,I love Ramires tooo ,Please tell chelsea to off load mikel ,he his our downfall
Nice love letter, BC.
I like Ramires a lot, too. I wish he’d been fit for Liverpool. They say he shines in the diamond, where his pace can be used to good effect. His best moments are when he surges forward. I look forward to more of it.
From the beginning he’s been a willing tackler. He’s not been a creative passer, for the most part. So my hope is that the return of the diamond brings out the best in the attacking side of his game.
I am not entirely convinced with his attacking abilities. Now we have seen a few times surging runs from him, but at the end, he has given the ball away, so he does no know when to release the ball. But yea, even I am hoping and am quite confident that he will become our star midfielder.
i have trusted ramires 4rm d begining,i knew he need some time to settle down, some pple say various things about him but i knew he ll prove himself shortly,he is our future midfielder.
i tried to convinced those that abuse him then that it is a matter of time and now am happy 4 him
Nice article, well said am sorry all the nasty words i said to Ramires early, cos he losses a lot of possession and he cost us Mancity match. am beginning to love him. All the way Ramirez i love u
Very naive article!
I have been a huge admirer and fan of Ramires since before he came to Chelsea. I first saw him playing for Benfica last season and was blown away by his speed, total commitment and non stop running. He has endured some very harsh critisim from certain sections of so called Chelsea fans. He ALWAYS gives 101% and if all of his passes do not make their target just look at what he is trying to do. He invariably try’s passing intricate ‘long’ through balls that don’t always come off but you can see the intent for the ‘killer’ ball. He has certainly been our best midfielder this season and due t0 others injuries has found he was dropped in the deep end early rather than being able to bed in gently to a new league. For me he has come up trumps and my one critism of Carlo this term is not keeping faith with the demunative Brazilian when we played Liverpool last weekend. Ramires played an excellent game versus Sunderland where he once again put in a shift and a half. I love Essien and Mikel has grown on me over the last couple of seasons but NO WAY on current form should Carlo pick either in front of Ramires. Come to that and on present form you could include Lampard in the list that should fall BEHIND Ramires in the pecking order. Personally I was hoping for a Ramires, Essien and Lampard midfield against Liverpool with Essien in the holding role. 30 seconds in and Mikel giving away and yet another stupid foul (and collecting a yellow card) proved my point. Jon Obi Mikel in particular is having a mare at the moment and should not be starting any game! Carlo MUST drop his attitude of picking Chelsea players by ‘reputation’ rather than form, his biggest weakness in my opinion. He gets away with it sometimes but more often than not this season this failing has caused us points. Ramires on current form must be a first pick for Chelsea’s starting midfield which is one hell of an achievement in his debut season for the blues. Personally I would then pick young Josh second before Lamps, Essien and Mikel. Let those three fight for the remaining place as none of them have hit the mark in recent weeks. That is not to say that any one of those three could not regain their form and the situation change, but for now none of them deserve to be in front of Ramires or Josh on pure ‘form’. I watched Josh play in the holding role for the reserves against Arsenal and he has so much ability in any role he is asked to play. Ramires IS a contender for player of the season (along with Cech, Ashley and Ivanovich) in my humble opinion. Lets use our little dynamo and extend him in EVERY game. He wont let us down for effort and committment which we can’t say about those that are currently being preferred to him. Ramires IS the future for Chelsea and now with his skillful best friend in the squad lets ALSO play Luiz and give him the same opportunities which will further make Ramires feel at home and push on to become the next best thing for Chelsea’s first eleven.
I have never had doubts about ramires, even though at first he made some mistakes that we dearly paid for, but thats football for you remember rome wastnt built in a day so he just needs time to adapt to the new life in english football. He is very committed and gives his best on the pitch, thats why he must surely succeed. Love you ramires! Keep it up
I love how half the blog were against him and now they are totally behind him. Sounds like a bandwagon eh? It’s amazing that some of you can call me anti-Chelsea even though everything I say is beneficial to Chelsea. I mean during the Liverpool match, I was stating how we could beat Liverpool, and if we didn’t they would have done this or that and would have beaten us. I mean, what I was saying was happening time and time again, yet no one listened except for Kenny and Steve who probably stole some WiFi from the Shed, came to BC Shout and read what I said. I mean even the U-16 squad at my school thinks I should be the manager instead of the current one. You should have seen our appalling display on Wednesday. Look at what foolishness this man decided to play. A 4-2-4 with 2 DM’s and playing 3 strikers out of place, they have 0 tactical awareness and are very lazy, our poorest GK, who is also lazy and can’t even hold a ball, supports Arsenal and thinks he is Schmeichel, two AM’s in a DM position and out best striker in a CB position. Was he on drugs or what? I mean I saw what the other team was trying to do, which they successfully did, dominate the midfield area, force errors unto our striker in the CB position and score while using their fast and organized defence to keep our retarded strikers at bay. The sad part is, our captain who usually scores 99% of his FK’s from anywhere 35 yards or less, Beckham style of course, loves Man Utd and dreams of being their #8 captain one day, was missing the 7 FK’s we got that day. Mind you their keeper got sent off in the 12 min and they just put an outfield player their, who was playing injured after he smashed his foot into the ground awkwardly after somehow saving a shot destined for goal. I truly considered this to be a Chelsea vs Liverpool like performance when it came to the tactical decisions made.
Failures are stepping STONE to SUCESS
Failures are stepping STONE to SUCCESS
My “Torres 9″ shirt has arrived today!!!! So happy nw
Tremayne Craigg,
LOL! It’s not bandwagon. It’s calling a spade a spade :)
In two years (assuming Ancelotti sticks around) will the Chelsea midfield have Josh McEachran at the tip of the diamond and Ramires running like mad on the right?
Arafat,
Arafat you should consider that prior to the last month, Mikel had the highest passing rate in the league and the most accurate passing too with 89%.
I think we can all see that Mikel Obi is going through a rough spell.
Nevertheless, he’s my first choice as a defensive midfielder. Frankly, that’s because no-one else is better. Essien’s been horrible in the role. McEachran’s too slight. Ramires has struggled when assigned back there.
So it’s addition by subtraction. Play the other guys where they perform best and hope Obi finds his form again.
So West Ham are going to incur a £95 million debt to move into their new digs.
I can’t see this ending well. Paying off a massive debt while playing in an echoing, half-empty stadium with fans separated from the pitch by a track.
I think they’ll need some luck to make it all work.
WXWAX,
add to that a 22 yrs old Ryan Bertrand as attacking LB and a sensational 20 yrs old Milan Lalkovic playing up front with Torres ( DD left for Marseilles)
I wouldn’t get too carried away with Ramirez as in the games I saw he gets pushed off the ball too easily but yes he has improved and yes he does show some fight and yes will grow as a player and I suspect score more goals..I feel sorry for Mikel as Ancelloti has him in a straight jacket playing in a very rigid position whereas I would like him swapped around at times to develop him as a player and throw a bit of confusion into the opposition….I mean he would be ideal with his build up for corners or in free kick situations…he has played some shockers but then again he is still young but I think it’s up to the coach to grow each player…I still think we need a creative midfield who has an eye for goal in the Modric or Xavi mould or deco when he was younger..someone who can take on players draw lots to them then make a good pass…Lampardgots the goal scoring sde but we can’t rely on him for much longer..hope Ancelloti gets into the players heads and convinces them that nothing is over till it’s over…as I suspect all the top teams are going to get the wobbles!
When our first team has been playing like crap for 3 month and counting, it’s good to see that the reserves are serving up some passion and fight. They just did it again, coming from one goal down and winning 2-1. Fourth round they knocked out Arsenal, tonight it was Barnsley. Moving towards a back to back win of the Youth Cup and showing some pride in wearing the Blue shirt.
Hi Guys
Its kinda been a while? Just to imform you guys that my sources tell me that,Chelsea are planning on taking Kaka away from Madrid for around about GBP 25m. For the 28 yr old who initially helped Ancelotti win the league during his eight season spell and the Champions league. He cost Madrid GBP 56m, but after a knee injury Chelsea are confident that we can get him for around GBP 25m. I hope we get him I enjoy watching him play, he is a true gentleman of the game. Don’t know if we’ll buy Kaka or if we really need Kaka, but time will tell. Nice job BC with the updates and the way the blog is looking and running in general. What more can I say, looking forward to reading your comments. cheers!
Michael,
We do not need gentelmen , it is a huge mistake ….
I see that the Daily Mail (I know, I know!) is linking Frank Arnesen to Real Madrid and Man City. Reduced job responsibilities, focus on youth only.
Ancelloti being supposedly quoted…”It’s difficult to think we can come back to fight for the title, it’s better to think game by game,” he said. “We have to reach minimum fourth place to keep Chelsea in the Champions League”..off the subject from blog but it’s too defeatest for the coach, especially since we play MU twice to come…Mourinho wasn’t perfect but all his teams fight 120% and he never offers up such good psychology about our state of mind to the opposition…very disappointing for me…
i have loved ramires from day one and i have never for once said any bad or harsh word towards the young man…i am glad y’all are seeing what i have seen in him from day one…just like BC mentioned…the fulcrum of the future chelsea would be Luiz,Ramires and Lukaku or Neymar…(not torress cos of his injury)
What a wonder goal by Rooney. I hate to say it, but United deserve the title this year.
I agree. United do deserve the title this season. Great finish by Rooney but it was made easy by Micah Richards’ poor effort on him. Nevertheless a great goal to seal a derby!
Princeakad, I think a proper creative/playmaking midfielder is the missing ingredient in your list.
I Believe in this guy! He is a good midfielder with alot of speed and tactics. I like that he runs alot and makes chanses!

That was a great analisys, mate. I´m brazilian, and have been watching Ramires since his days in Cruzeiro. He just gets better and better as he grows old. I think had we not lost him in the world cup, maybe we´d have been luckier. He really plays for the team, he´s very fast, he´s not a diver and he´s also extremely skillful. I´m happy to see he´s doing well in Chelsea. In fact, one can really say he´s the best of the team, in this season. Few brazilians managed to succeed in english football, maybe only Gilberto Silva and Lucas. A few had some good moments, like Anderson or Gomes, but to be big in Chelsea, that´s something really hard for any south-american. I´m sure if he doesn´t have any serious injury during his career, he´ll just improve his skills more and more and, In a few years, he´ll be the leader of brazilian national squad and, who knows, of Chelsea too?
Rafael,
Thanks Rafael! I’m sure Ramires would be a fantastic player for Chelsea. His presence has made me feel better. He will be the future of our midfield. You know what pleases me about your comment? You picked up an old post that’s not live now and still made your comment. Thanks mate.
