It was Fernando Torres who said romance in football is gone. Ask Liverpool fans today. Victory would never have tasted sweeter than today for the Kop. Fairplay to them. They deserved to win – not because they played better – only because they were less erroneous and stronger tactically. Not mincing words here, they got the win they deserved. What about Chelsea then? That’s the point of this whole article mate.
For me, there were two surprises in the line-up. One – Torres was really starting. Two – No Ramires even on the bench. I was surprised by Torres starting because I thought Carlo would be a bit more conservative and subtle about Torres’ introduction at Chelsea. Secondly, I was hugely disappointed to know that Ramires wasn’t in the line up only to find that he wasn’t even on the bench. There was no news about what happened to him either. The official website completely missd out on reporting what happened with him.
We started with a certain version of 4-4-2 diamond with Anelka in the hole. Liverpool played in a 3-5-1-1 which is more like a 8-1-1 when they’re off the ball. The intent was clear. Liverpool wanted just a point. They came with limited aspirations. Their plan was to frustrate Chelsea and hit them on the break. They did it very well. Actually we made it a bit easy for them to defend.
Anelka was this time officially in the attacking midfield role which he anyway takes up most matches. This time around he had two world class strikers waiting for service. It’s pity that Anelka hardly connected with Drogba or Torres. With so many Liverpool defenders crowding at the back, it was always going to be difficult to find Drogba or Torres in space but kind of gave up and never properly tried. We played with this old formula of stretching their defence with the wide players and thereby creating space in the middle for the strikers. This wasn’t happening as Liverpool had stationed three centre backs and was letting the five-man midfield deal with Chelsea’s wide play.
With no creativity in our midfield and in our attacking play, we were never going to beat an eight-man wall. We had to quickly do something after the initial 10-15 minutes as soon as the direction of the match was evident. We didn’t do much. We kept on pondering, creating hardly anything. There was no excuse for us not to play better in the second half – surprise, surprise – we did the exact same things, only in a slightly better tempo.
I’d say the Liverpool defence and midfield weren’t tested. They never got to their top gear. The central defence had to make only one block – Carragher on Torres. I hardly saw Pepe Reina. Did he even have to make a save? Yes, we should have got penalties – two of them. But I wouldn’t say we would have deserved our win then. The result is not in our control, our effort is. Fans go by the efforts. The owners could go by the results. I’m certainly not the owner and I saw no efforts.
With Man Utd and Arsenal slipping, with the new signings coming in, you don’t need to motivate this team for this match. We should have come out all guns blazing. We should have pressed them all over the pitch. We should have passed and moved like champions playing at home. We did none of that. We were slow. We paid too much respect for a Liverpool team that was severely lacking in quality and would have happily taken a draw.
We had culprits all over the pitch. Cech was at fault for the goal. Period. That’s his area where there was a confusion and a resultant goal. Few minutes earlier, Cech and Ivanovic had a miscommunication and blew it off on each other. For this cross from Gerrard, Cech was unsure of what to do. He should have either gone totall committed into punching the ball or should have let the centre backs deal with it and stayed on the line. He did neither. He went for the ball half heartedly and Meireles knocked in the loose ball from the confusion.
I need to talk about the build up of the goal too. I think it was Carragher who rounded Ashley Cole to pass to Gerrard on the right wing. I was wondering what Ashley was doing so up on the pitch leaving Gerrard in the space behind him. It wasn’t even a counterattack. Lampard tried to block but couldn’t get a touch on the ball. Playing with a single striker against strong Chelsea centre backs, they might have known that the goal needs to come from the wings. All they had to do was to attack Bosingwa and Ashley Cole. Our left back made it a bit too easy for them.
Our defenders played well individually but as a unit they didn’t. The goal that we conceded was a joke. No way in hell that should have been allowed. That was an opportunistic ball from Gerrard aimed at no one but misunderstanding between our centre backs and the keeper meant a free grab from Meireles. Luiz was very impressive. He is young, fit and was up for the fight. Next match, he should pair with Terry while Ivanovic moves to right back.
Our midfield was poor – Lampard, Essien, Mikel – all of them. Lampard was not involved in the match. He wasn’t really wanting the ball. Essien was very error prone – poor passes and heavy touches. Mikel – picked up a yellow under 1 minute and lost the ball 4 times in the first 10 minutes. There was no creativity from the midfield. At times, Anelka was also moving back and forth creating some congestion in the middle.
Our midfield may not have produced chances but they weren’t even able to find our strikers. We went back to our boring and unyielding style of stereotypical wing play. They knew our every move before we could make it. Our midfield failed.
Torres did fine. I didn’t expect him to come and score on his debut against Liverpool. Sheva scored on his debut and that was against Liverpool too. Scoring on debut is just for some media drama. I’m only concerned about his contribution in a season rather than this little dramatics like scoring against the old club or scoring on debut. I was hoping that he stays for all 90 minutes but he came off for Kalou.
Drogba was pathetic. He’s been like that for weeks and months now. He’s off his pace. His focus and concentration are poor and that shows in attacking play. He is not giving his best. What’s now left is only his physciality which is helpful sometimes in defence. May be it’s time for him to get the axe. Truly, his contribution to the team has been dwindling. Even today, I felt as if we were playing with 10 men. Granted, the service was poor but his movements were sluggish, touches were bad, losing every battle with the defender and poor body language. He’s completely out of sorts. He should be step aside for next match.
Anelka was good. He was trying hard but I guess he wasn’t really playing the role he was supposed to. Well, he was in the right zones on the pitch but he had no chemistry with the forwards. I don’t think he set them up even once. But at least he tried hard, unlike Drogba. I never thought I’d ever say this in my life – Anelka tried, unlike Drogba!
Finally, Ancelotti. He was outwitted by Kenny Dalglish. Kenny had done his homework beautifully well. He knew what he wanted his team to do and he played by their limitations. He set his team up tactically well and shut us out. On the contrary, Carlo hardly changed anything. We went back to December. I’m fine with a poor first half performance but the second half? I had expected Chelsea to come out all guns blazing and knock them out of the park in the first 15 minutes. Carlo wasn’t ready to take risks.
Our 4-1-2-1-2 looked like an untested product. This formation with full backs charging down the wing doesn’t work with slow midfielders. Our full backs were pacy and were in the opponent half many times but our midfield is not quick enough to deal with any sudden counterattacks. Probably, our midfield was afraid of giving away counterattacks hence they played in a very subdued fashion. There was no ball-wise interaction between Lampard and Essien. They had to work together but they hardly did. Carlo had to make a change in the midfield. By the time he made a change we lost precious time and with it the momentum.
I hate it when we play like we’re out of ideas. With this kind of squad this can’t be happening. I hate it when we go through the motions over and over again to be met with the same result. I hate it when we become brain dead and it becomes obvious with more than a half to go and you know ‘it’s not happening today’. Carlo needs to shake things up. I’ve been saying this for many weeks now. He should take more risks. He should be lot more adventurous. He wasn’t brave enough. It showed in our team as we were nothing special today.
Even in the second half, we hardly showed any urgency. We weren’t passionate enough. We didn’t show the desire to beat them, at Stamford Bridge. For me, I understand a manager based on how his teams play. We were laid back, we played like it’s okay if we don’t win. We didn’t play like a team that badly wanted to close the gap with the leagu leaders and pull themselves back into the title race. For me, this was a reflection of Carlo Ancelotti. May be he had given up on the title, even before this match.
If Carlo doesn’t believe that we have a chance to win the title, all that he needs to do is to settle for a top four finish. If top four finish is what we want, he can afford to experiment and take some little risks. He can afford to drop some big names and play some new names.
If I were him, I’d not play these players in the next match – Drogba, Mikel, Essien & Lampard. What’s the worst thing that could happen? We might lose, right? We’ve lost seven times already this season and we have only 13 games left to close a 10 point gap. If this is Chelsea leading Man Utd by 10 points at this stage, you know what chance we’d have given them – zero. That’s almost what we have now. We may not do the double over Man Utd. It looks like a himalayan task now. Even if Man Utd were to slip, we’re not the only team to be benefitted by that. We need Man Utd, Arsenal and Man City to slip for us to have a go at the title.
Quite possibly, Carlo is only looking at the champions league. Interestingly, we are stronger than many other teams in the champions league with the new signings. I’m happy for Carlo to fully focus on the champions league provided he doesn’t play his first choice in the premier league week in week out. Carlo has decisions to make. A win today would have given him some sweet problems. Not anymore. The focus and direction should be clear now.
In a way, we’re like Liverpool now. Trailing by 10 points in February and all that’s left is champions league. They won it a few times and Carlo has too. Not many get as luck as Carlo. He’s got a world class striker in the January window that he can use in the champions league. C’mon Carlo, you can still win the double, only that premier league may not be one of them.

I need to talk to you Blue. How can I contact you?
Tremayne Craigg,
I’ll mail you mate. Cheers!
Absolutely awful pformance. Carlo needs an assistant. Clem looks scared of the players. Lampard was poor. We needed 2 win today. Carlo got things wrong.
Bad Formation Mikel OUUUUUUUUUUUUUT I HATE YOU, U ARE LOSER ..? When is Ramires???
LOVE LUIZ.
Torres isn’t a defender, so the people having a go at him are crazy. He’s a target man, if he drifts too far back to defend, then there is nobody up top for an outlet pass. Be angry w/ Ancelotti for not changing tactics quickly enough. I think he realized after 30 minutes he needed to change, but had himself in a pickle in that he couldn’t take off Drogba/ Anelka/ Torres without ruffling feathers. We needed to get wide players on to get around the crowded midfield pack of Liverpool. Who knows, everyone was so lethargic and tentative today. Highly discouraging. This was the chance to have a crack at the title and we miffed it. So hopefully the Laser focus on Champs League will kick the boys into gear, since that and the FA cup is all we have left.
BOLLOCKS
I’m sure Carlo is overwhelmed by the new signings. He really didnt have to start Torres right away. Both him and Luiz should have been started as substitutes for Didier, Bosingwa in my opinion.
On the bright side Luiz looks great in Centre Back positon. Ivanovic is at his best at Right Back. We should sell Bosingwa, he is such a poor defender.
Wrote you a message on the Contact page Blue. Please reply fast.
Well for one dalglish is a very very shrewd manager…..he saw us the other day playing the diamond and changed his formation to the 3-5-2
And like we know how napoli destroyed Juventus in the season ,its the simple case of the 3-5-2 vs the 4-4-2
dosen’t matter….the diamond is a variation of the 4-4-2
when ur playing against a three man defence first thing to do is to shift to a 4-3-3 co the ull leave ur main striker against just one central defender………..
4-3-3…….we wudve won…………
torres shud not have started this game…he shudnt start until they find a way to utilize drogba and him together………
luiz looked brilliant………..i like the back 4 already
ivan-luiz-terry-cole
Hi Guys,
I m posting here after ages. This season has thrown up one diaspoointment after another. Today was the worst of the lot. Carlo proved hes a really bad tactician today.
We were beaten by a very very average Liverpool team and theres absolutely no excuse for that. Carlo didnt have to start Torres, DD & Anelka all at once. DD has been pathetic for almost 2 months nad he keeps walking into the team. This would never happen if he was playing for Sir Alex or Jose Mourinho. The best managers are the ones who have the guts to take stern decisions. Carlo is proving over and over again that he cant make tough calls.
Even today, it was evident after just 20 minutes that Liverpool had set out to frustrate us and block the midfield. Carlo did absolutely nothing to counter this and waited till after 60 minutes to make a change. Carlo has no plan B for any game. He just comes in with a set plan and hopes that it works. He doesnt make smart tactical moves to try and change things. His substitutions are also mind blogging at times.
The players were also pathetic at times and there was a clear lack of desire on their part. The manager and the captain has to take the blame for that. There should be fear in the camp.Players should fight for their place.Losing should hurt.If such basic things are not happening in the camp, then we have no right to call ourselves Champions.
Carlo, get your act together and save our season. Use the squad well. Rotate intelligently and ensure we finish in the top four. Try and win the FA cup & the Champions League.
Cmon CHELSEA
I wouldn’t read too much into this game, lads. I guess getting in two new marquee signings for a game against a rejuvenated Liverpool wasn’t ideal and we could see that, couldn’t we ? I don’t know about you guys, but the game I saw was one with a midfield area more crowded than Time Square on a weekend (Well, apart from the fact that it was probably the most boring game in the Premier League)!
I believe Ancelotti wouldn’t and, in retrospect, shouldn’t have changed his formation to accommodate Torres. Not in a game of this importance at least. As paramel said, 4-3-3 would’ve worked today against a 3-man defense.
And just to comment on another tactical mistake, if anyone should have been substituted, it should have been Drogba. Let’s face it guys, Drogba just doesn’t seem to care anymore. All he was doing is standing there. I barely saw him for more than 4 frames for the whole game. Disappointing, really.
Given up on the title a long time ago, so no panicking from me. I think we should be able to pull off a 3rd place finish or even a 2nd given Arsenal’s reluctance to pose a threat. 2-0 win against Fulham.
KTBFFH !!
Ancelotti’s biggest mistake, in my humble opinion, was opting for Mikel rather than Ramires. Mikel’s run of poor form continued, as he never really got into a groove following his first minute booking. Ancelotti’s other mistake was to start Essien over Malouda. I love Essien as much as anyone, but we had absolutely no width with both Essien and Mikel in the center of the field. We were handed a gift by Maxi Rodriguez’s miss from three yards, but our failure to capitalize was what led to our downfall. Glen Johnson’s body check on Ivanovic should have been given as a penalty though, the non-call was a horrendous mistake by the referee.
This is a disgrace new signings and can’t even score one measly goal sometimes I wonder if the wages are getting flooded inside the players brains they get too much money just fot kicking a ball around the pitch I tell you I’d probably do a better in scoring ill be filling an application form to carlo ancelloti statitng that I should pkay for them that way we can win against the enemy.
Mikel and Bosingwa are utter crap……
Bad moments were not gone …
our formations in the future should be turnbull, ivano, terry, luiz, cole, josh, lampsy, essien malouda studd torres
Arsenal and Manchester dropped two and three points respectively yesterday and we could reduce the huge gap by winning Liverpool at Stamford Bridge; however, this did not happen. We lost to Liverpool and our chance to win English Premier League title got dimmer and dimmer, if not dead. What makes me disappointed is that we could not make any goal-scoring opportunity at our home against Liverpool. The question that remains without answer is why did this happen to us again while we all thought bad moments are gone? We played very well against Sunderland and it seemed that the same performance could easily make us winner against Liverpool, but this did not happen.
While I was watching the game in a Chelsea pub, most Chelsea fans were criticizing Lampard, Drogba and Anelka. I strongly believe we lost because of Carlo Ancelotti’s wrong tactic against Liverpool.
Using Torres was a huge mistake. In fact Torres’s signing helped Liverpool to win this game. Roman Abromovich gave Carlo Ancelotti the one of the best strikers in English Premier League and Carlo acts like a seven years old kid who is in rush to play with his toys. He played with Torres very early without considering the disadvantage of that.
Using Torres, along with Drogba, results in a huge tactic change for Chelsea.
——————————- Cech —————————————-
Bosingwa———-Ivanovic——————–Terry————–Cole
——————————–Mikel—————————————–
———————Essien—————–Lampard————————
———————————————————————————– (I draw this on purpose)
——————————–Anelka—————————————-
——————Drogba———————Torres————————–
Mike, Essien and Lampard were left alone with five Liverpool midfielders. It was obvious that Lampard cannot do anything. Liverpool won every single battle in middle of the field and our strikers did not receive any ball to show them.
Carlo made huge mistake and he realized it late. He brought out Torres and used the old tactic but it was late. Changing tactic is not easy. Carlo should let team practice with two strikers and then use it against a big team like Liverpool
This game had some positive points. David Luiz played really good. I am impressed with the kid. Torres was good as well; he needs to practice more with team. Do not forget, we have Champions League and we will fight for that.
I strongly believe Carlo will be fired if he does not deliver CL this season. Most people think Roman supports Carlo because of spending millions on Torres and Luiz but this is not correct. Torres has been in Roman’s plan for many years and Chelsea was looking for a defender since Carvalho departure.
I never expected Carlo to make such childish mistake against Liverpool
we need a english assitent manager like wise, or adams, no more foreing please…..we are like arsenal full of foreing trophyless
It wasn’t so bad, we had far more chances but we didn’t take them. Can’t argue with the result though but a very disappointing result. Back to the we need Wilkins back.
julio,
Carlo is a goner …. Roman does not see any reason to bring a new Ass manager. He will fire Carlo and Roman waits to see who the new manager wants to bring in ….
Acelotti must go…if he cant bring the best out of the player or be sound tactically then there’s only one person to blame…bring back Mourinho!!!
what a bad season!!!! like scolari!!!!!, we have a lot foreing player…..axe carlo and bring martin o´neill and rebuilt a brittish team
Good lord, do you people have no faith? Ancelotti won the double last year, and less than a year later you’re calling for his dismissal? Carlo has a chance to become the Chelsea manager for years to come, but only if Roman allows him to keep hold of his job. Realistically, we have blown our only chance to reclaim our title. Therefore, the Champions League must be our top priority. Our tie is against Copenhagen, which I would think of as easy to advance through, but considering Chelsea poor form of late, that might not be the case.
What does Ancelloti tell the players, this guy is definitely not a good man manager. WHAT. After the loss by Manure, he ought to have pepped them up so high they would have needed to test them for drugs. If the reverse was the case, can anyone see Manure losin this kind of match. Not even a draw. Whatever happened to if you don’t score make sure you don’t conceed.
Bring Martin Oneil or Harry or guardiola
First we have to qualify to CL this season
Churchill,
This is soccer , u are judged by current results not with what u did in past
Carlo made huge mistake in this game and he has not been able to Bering Chelsea back on track after 3 months …
As long as we don’t meet Barca before the final, I think we’ll win the Champions League. Even Madrid aren’t that big a threat especially after their performances against weak teams in their league and dropping points… say we beat them 2-0 at home and we might draw 1-1 or lose 1-0 away. Torres will come along, he should have never started. The price tag, the game against his former team, the pressure got to him but he’ll come along. I think we should be one of the favourites for the FA. I say ONE, ManUre and Le Arse will be a big threat. I’ve given up on league, we should fight for 4th.
Team From Now on Hopefully, but Carlo ain’t like that:
Cech
A.Cole — Terry — D.Luiz (Until Alex is fit) — Ivanovic
Ramires — Lamps (He has a free role as he gets in the box Ramires will defend)
Malouda — Anelka — Kalou
Torres
… The change in Formation just to see if it works… Just to adventurous
Maysam,
Well obviously all that’s left for us to hope for is the elusive Champions League. Carlo has won the CL with Milan, that was one of the reasons Roman signed him in the first place. WInning the CL would certainly save Carlo’s job.
True, results are results, but the stopping carousel of managers that has been in place over the past few years may be better for the club in the long run.
Churchill,
Let’s see what he dies in CL, honestly, I’m optimistic for CL
But Carlo disappointed me …. With bad line-ups …
First we have to qualify to CL this season
i was so disappointed with the reslut. i believe if we couldnt score in the First half , then i will be extremely difficult for us to change things around and win the game.
This was what we say today. We were almost a goal behind , but good luck for Chelsea they hit the post. So it was an alert but the Manager didnt care and this boring formula needs to come to an end.
Im Done
JJ,
You are right mate lets forget the league too much losses
David Luiz was a revelation….Carlo obviously is clueless and he is not tactically sound…i pray God helps him cos he is lost…..KTBFFH and …………….
i don’t think we were that bad tbh i mean we had more chances than liverpool two from torres one essien one anelka one malouda byt didn’t take them if we had taken one of them i don’t think people would ask for carlo to go like they are doing now
that’s football one day it smiles to you and the other just hit you on your backside !
Carlo is nothing without Ray and Clark…
Its Ray and Clark bring us the double.
Not carlo…
We paid the price by not sacking carlo 3 months ago…
Its 3 months ! OMFG..
I cant take it anymore..
Ivano is a great RB but not as a CB. David Luiz looked very promising. Drogba should have been replaced instead of Torres. Why doesnt Carlo sub or drop Drogba? Carlo needs to show some guts. Last year he was lucky that Drogba and others were in good form. This year when players are consistently off form he should replace them with players in form. Where was Ramires yesterday. With the way the players are playing and with Carlo not getting his tactics right how can we even think of the Champions League.
Great one BC, like i said only thing positive about Chelsea these days is the BlueChampions! :)
I agree with you cent-per-cent! And i really like the way you end your article – on a positive note.
I would have started like this:
Malouda……Drogba……Nico
Lamspy………………….Ramires
…………….Essien………………….
Ashley…Terry…Luiz…Ivanovic
…………………Cech…………………..
And bring Torres on at around 70th minute for either one of the Frenchmen. It was not a positive thing for Torres to be subbed, it straightforward means that he is not good enough (than Kalou). Anyway, i really give up on the EPL now and my only hope is that we win the Champions League.
Something is really wrong with Carlo, and yes he seems too timid now. I was so frustrated when Ramires is not on the bench, forget the first 11. At one point i even wondered if a certain ‘Sala’ is his other name. He is the most effective player at the moment and i really don’t know why on earth he didn’t feature.
The worst thing about yesterday’s result is the fact that i have to face loserfools, and their brays!
Enough is enough now. Carlo is being too coward I feel. For me, essien and mikel doesn’t work. Both are not the best creators and it showed against liverpool. Essien, Mikel and Drogba should get the axe. Any player can suffer a loss of form, but during such a period, one should at least get the basics right. Essien is not even doing that. He gives away possession far too cheaply, which is absolutely annoying to watch. With a diamond, I think ramires will be perfect for us on the right. Carlo should play him there and should ask him to drift wide because Bosingwa does everything right except delivering a decent ball in. On the left, Cole was looking isolated yesterday with no Malouda. Carlo should find a solution for that flank too. I think even Mceachran would be good drifting left. Only positive from yesterday’s match was David Luiz. He was so calm and composed on the ball, and was parading forward like how carvalho used to do.
So hurting to see Steve Clark in teh reds dugout!
Bosingwa can dribble, he can maraud but his crosses are awful, so there is no point being able to take the journey which doesn’t take you to a desired destination. Sell this man! Remember Bayern Munich wanted him?
Drogba is such a bully that he wants to take all the free kicks, even those that are in Lampsy’s area! And he wants to take corner kicks while he should rather be trying to use his strong body to torture the opponent’s defenders. I don’t like Drogba’s psychic!
Anyway, Luiz is so nice!
To play two strikers, we need a Mesut Ozil or Hamshik or VDV in attacking midfield. Anelka can’t play that . We should revert to 4-2-3-1 combination , with Ramires, Obi in central midfield, Lampard, Drogba or Anelka ( across center) and Essien to play upfront.
With the current structure it is just 3 in the midfield and both Anelka / Torres, don’t play deep .. Tough decision, but you can’t play all three together..
As BC said, lets focus on CL . Barca / RM are the favourites, but with lot of matches coming in, we can rest and focus on CL . Torres will not be available for FA cup, but then Anelka, Maluda and Kaluo can play and win..
Curiously, after experiencing the bad run of 3 months this year……I am strangely calm after this defeat.
But I am optimistic….the Poos came nicked a goal and parked the bus … they been doing that for years … so no surprise…
It’s just another game or another 3 points lost of a title defence already in the bin…. yep I said it… BC also said it : The Prem title is for next year….
But the business for this year is the CL qualification…. team strengthening…..CL and FA victory…
CL victory over the Old enemy : BarKa
FA glory hopefully against the Poos with Torres scoring !
Lampard, mikel, essien, drogba better buck up….cech should be more decisive…ivanovic must not get mixed up with cech…
Ok guys, my first post was just ater watching the match and i was fuming. Now that i am a bit calm i’ll like to put my thoughts here. First, someone needs to explain to us why the team has become too slow lately. The build up is like watching paint dry. It is absolutely awful.I simply cannot understand why teams who r technically less gifted than us can out play us with speed but we get the ball and is like the back four will have to let each and everyone touch the ball before moving it forward. It’s so frustrating and it makes the oppositon and in this case Looserpool who were playing five at the back excluding the keeper, have time to cover. Is it cos we over-train or under-train or what. Who helps in the player’s physical conditioning cos it looks before the match starts, they all look tired. Look i dont blame Nando. It was his first game with the team and we dont expect him to single handedly winthe match for us. He is still feeling his way thru the team. That’s why Carlo should have started him from the bench. Again Essien has been awful for like 3 months. He looks bereft of ideas. He can’t pass forward or beat a man. I am still curious as to what has happened to Michael Essien. Mikel started the season so well. I am one of his critics but this season i thought he was our best player during the first 5 matches. He has reverted to his old self again. Cant pass, dwells on the ball for far too long. He and Essien may lose their position in the team next season and may have to move on. Anybody also noticed Ashley Cole’s performances this season. I have noticed that Ash doesn’t get forward a lot this season and it’s like he’s reluctant to do that. When he has an opportunity to shoot he rather cut’s the ball back and passes backwards. It’s as if he’s scared to injure his ankle again. He delays his throw ins and takes the wrong otions at throw ins resulting in us losing the ball. Ash has been off form. Lampard had a terrible night yesterday. He’s a clublegend , no two ways abt that, but i feel Lamps time is up. He may play one more season from the bench and just move on to coach the academy or something like that.
Now to Carlo, i feel he needs an able assistant. Clem and Emenalo r not up to it. maybe Di Matteo can join him. Drogba will always b Drogba frustrating one season brilliant the next. He is like a kid in a huge body. I think tactically Carlo got it wrong our midfielders have refused to go behind the opposition that is why we r not scoring goals. Period. And what happened to Cech. i feel Cech is not a big game player and that is what i think the club is trying to address. David Luiz was great and will start the next game. Bosingwa is awful he has no football brains. people say he’s great going forward but i have to disagree. he will rush forward and his decision making upfront is atrocious. How many crosses can he whip into the box , none. he cuts in, then makes the wrong pass. Hutchinson could cross the ball far better than Bosingwa .i am afraid he’s off next summer. We cant continue to pay players who just r not up to it but hide behind the team to claim weekly wages. In all we r out of the league. We wont win it and i must say i am getting worried we may not get a Champions League place. our players are not working hard enough, the midfielders look lazy bar Ramires and he didn’t even play last night.
MatBlue,
I agree with you in utmost totality!
Though the result was painful we can take some good points from it. Torres though lacking any decent support and for his first game showed he will be a big asset.. one we already know has world class potential. Luiz in the short time on the field also showed he is going to be a big player to the team. The team played to win but with the wrong tactics while if you were a Liverpool supporter you might be estactic with the result but not with the ambition. I wouldn’t even say they were playing for a draw…more like trying not to lose by a big score. For the whole match they fell back to the final third with 10 players defending and then crabbing from one side to the other and then back again. Yes they scored and hit the post but both were gifted by the most stupid defending you are ever likely to see…they seemed to be happy not having the ball. Luck was on their side with the arm ball penalty not given and the double handed push on Ivanovic as he went to head the ball by Johnson and then Torres miss due to either a very lucky block or just great defending. What I don’t understand is Ancelloti persisting with no wingers when it became obvious that to break them down we needed to have wide players and not fullbacks in very forward positions…against a team that had 1o players happy to sit back we needed wingers…once again for me he showed little initiative when it was bleedin obvious that change was needed. Torres off, Drogba on another mystery as Drogba was very poor…I think Ancelloti needs to put a lot of blame on himself as the players were trying but in the wrong set up…as for Anelka he did well considering you could throw a blanket over both teams!
We bought torres and luiz. But in mid no creative players. And also our playing system is predictable. So Carlo should change his tactic and formation. This is the 7th defet for us. This is not the end defet. Sorry.

If carlo wants to play the diamond then we may need Josh at the tip of the diamond. Ramires and Essien to fight for the same position. lampard and malouda to fight for the same position. The problem is the midfield. We move the ball far too slow. Yesterday’s game was like a training match. No passion , no drive absolutely nothing. it’s so frustrating. I know for certain that Daid Luiz is a big game player. He will come good for us. I am beginning to worry abt Carlo’s position. He seemed lost and unsure what to do. This is Chelsea Football Club. Get up and fight. Where is the fight?! Where is the passion?!
Ethiopia had a great role for the development of African soccer. But this time our national team is out of AFCON. Ethiopian national team plays a beautiful game. Most africans compares this team with arsenal. When we see Chelsea, except few players all of them are jamping like frogs with thier two legs. All of them kick ball to any direction. This team is not playing with passion.
@ Bedada : Ethiopian national football team plays beautiful football and compared with Arsenal!!!! iam laughing my ass out here…i think you’ve never seen Barca play…
Yesterday our problem was our tactics which was very very predictable..we know we had problem playing against 3-5-1-1 formation in the past.. Looserfools just wanted to choke us in the midfield which they did successlly..This is where i miss THE SPECIAL ONE..Had he been with us,our tactics, our approach would’ve changed hugely in the second half…
@ Blue Lead :Nice Article
Liverpool followed the same strategy of 3-4-2-1 ( or 3-5-1) last week also , so it is not sure that Kenny devised it for us. May be we will know next week. But Ancelloti problem has been making decisions. He should have reverted to 4-3-3 when Torres was getting replaced and then went to 4-2-4 in the end. Now he has much better bench than last year Champions league.. I wish he delivers what he was called for .. or else hey Special one is available end of the season ..
Maysam,
Maysam bringing Martin O’niel would be the worst thing Chelsea can do since bringing in Scolari. He will be our Roy Hodgson.
@Giri: TSO knew really well how to shut the defence and play counter-attacks. And he had also great assistants in Ray Wilkins and – Steve Clarke. Yep, the one who is now the first team coach of Liverpool. Here I would look see the main reason for such a stark contrast in our and Liverpool defensive play. Carlo could be a great coach (and used to be a good defender at times), but u also need QUALITY assistants specialized on certain aspects of play, training, etc. On Sunday it seemed Carlo does not have any.
The second problem is his tactical conservatism – he tends to stick with given formation even if it clearly does not work and is just a catastrophe in the waiting. Once he could recognize the middle of the pitch is overcrowded and impossible to break through, he should move Anelka to the flank or try to widen the positions of both strikers. I really expected a strong Chelsea reaction after the break; we could have slow starts recently, but usually when losing we can really bounce back in the second half. But Sunday was a clear disappointment in this respect; even after Kalou came from the bench, the tactical display of our team remained largely the same, no wing play and no movement changes at all.
Unfortunately the omission of Ramires severely limited our tactical arsenal, cause neither Lamps nor Essi can play on the flanks. So we could only stick with 3 central midfielders (which were well held by 3-man defensive wall in front of the Liverpool defence) and look in despair at their fruitless efforts to hold the ball and pass it to an advancing player.
Frustrating evening and a proper headache for the whole week coming.
xerxesk,
He is one choice, we have range of choices from Martin to Guardiola. My friend, if we do not qualify for CL next season, nor Harry, netiher Guardila will come to Chelsea ….Take a look at the table … we need City and Tottenham to lose point .. and we have two games with Manchester ….
Everyone said Liverpool surprised Chelsea with its formation …. World class team with a manager who has won CL several times as a player and coach … I do not accept that …. Carlo should know Liverpool better than his team, if he wants to succeed. you have to know your opponents better than your team to beat them … I never forget Jose Mourinho’s interview before the game against Barcelona …..
Torres reveals that Liverpool took us by surprise with their defensive set-up. That can only reflect on Ancelottis poor “research” of his opponent. He showed his limited tactical ability by not being able to change during a game in which the opposition starts surprisingly.
Another issue, why was Ramires left out completely? He’s been our best player by far the last 3 games.
Playing Torres from start was a mistake and it did not do anything good to Torres himself. Was Carlo pressurised from above to play Torres, wouldn’t rule it out.
Repeated poor performances by our “big” players ; Lampard, Essien and Drogba is unbearably frustrating. Carlo needs to show some balls and leave any player out that does not perform. I don’t give a flying monkey if Drogba throws a fit if benched. He is such a spoilt brat at times that I wish he would leave for Real Madrid. Essien has lost his MoJo long time ago, find it or play with the reserves. Lampard, yes he’s a living legend, but that shouldn’t as by default secure a place in the line-up. McE is ready to stand in.
Bosingwa, please go back to Portugal in the summer, he is by far our worst ever buy. He is so predictable in his runs and my granny could cross a ball better than him. Pathetic.
Let’s focus on the qualification for next seasons CL and try and win this seasons CL. Use the momentum that the Torres and Luiz signings created and play the team that deserves to play in the blue shirt. We have plenty of young talent waiting to be shown a bit of trust from Carlo. Be brave and think outside the box sometimes.
maysam,
I agree, we are not in a great position at all. But hey what can we do? Pep is not gonna leave the best team in the world currently and join us, and I’m not sure if Martin has what it takes to be a top flight manager, specially at Chelsea. I frankly don’t know who would be a good option. I would suggest Didier Deschamps, perhaps with Desailly as his assistant. I think that would be somewhat manageable. Even Eric Gerets would be good. I would say Allan Curbishely would be a good assistant too, he is always spot on during the break at Setatanta.
It’s funny reading different, respected football analysts puzzle over Liverpool’s formation. Zonal Marking charted it as a 3-1-4-1-1.
Jonathan Wilson, a very good writer, described it as a 3-4-2-1.
And lots of you saw it as a 3-5-2.
That’s funny. Everyone agrees that the crowded midfield put a premium on width. And Liverpool’s advanced fullbacks put a lot of stress on Cole and Bosingwa.
Anelka didn’t play poorly. He just didn’t have the space he had against Sunderland.
Carlo Ancelotti isn’t the only manager getting criticized for poor tactics by unhappy fans.
Can you guess the other?
Yes, it’s the Special One.
It’s possible that Ancelotti was outsmarted by Dalglish. But I’d rather judge a manger on a full campaign, not a single battle.
wxwax,
Honestly mate, from a Chelsea point of view, we couldn’t care less about what The Special One does in Real Madrid. I agree that a manager should be judged on a full campaign but we can’t hold our opinions until the end of the season, can we? This was a very very important match in the context of the league. A win yesterday would have lifted the spirits and for all we care, could even have started a Man Utd collapse. With this weekend’s results, Man Utd would only grow stronger in confidence.
My gripe is around how well Carlo prepares the team for these matches. The preparation wasn’t evident. The effort wasn’t there. The passion wasn’t there. Interestingly, in Liverpool, I could see the preparation, effort and passion. They came with an intelligent plan and went home with more than what they could have asked for. We looked totally unprepared, unable to react and respond to the challenge on the day. If we had tried and failed, I wouldn’t be cribbing so much. It’s the fact that we were clueless is what’s making me very annoyed.
I am off from football news until Chelsea win the next game. All i need to is stay calm and not to abuse the players and manager…
Many people have spoken about the lack of flexibility in our tactics and how this as contributed to our recent form. True, we were outplayed by Liverpool the other day and Carlo did nothing much to change our approach. But it yet doesnt convince me as the main reason for our displays. When I see some of the Chelsea players playing today, I feel there is something missing, they are not the same as they were last season. Dont you feel the same?
Last season our formation was the same as the current one, tactics were very similar and we managed to win the double. Suprising? NO. Chelsea played with passion, spirit, determination. You could see it in the players eyes they wanted to win something big.
This season, formations and tactics havent changed much have they. Carlo must have thought “I did decently well last season, why should I change?”. Makes perfect sense.
I think what has been missing this season, and BC has pointed it out various times is our PASSION. I see Chelsea play today, but I see no heart, no passion. Why has it disappeared? This is where I put the blame on Carlo. Why hast he been able to motivate these players after a great last season? Look at barcelona, they keep winning and winning and you look at the players and they want to keep winning. I dont see that in Chelsea, at least this season.
But again, i tend to be very open-minded, dont like being too harsh. Lets put ourselves in Carlo’s shoes. Maybe communication has been his problem. English is not his first language, it must be difficult for him to sometimes communicate efficiently with our players. But I dont think its just that. Sometimes I feel Carlo isnt strict at all and players dont feel the pressure to perform, because no matter how many pathetic games Drogba has had, he still expects to be in the starting line up. It took Chelsea to make a 50 million signing to finally make Carlo put Malouda on the bench after so many poor games. The same goes for so many other players, Essien, Mikel.
What im trying to say is that if players dont feel that heat and pressure from their managers, we shouldnt expect them to perform to their best. I do not mind losing a game if I see Essien and Drogba on the bench. Why not? it sends them a clear message. Either you perform or you warm. This is what actually annoys me.
Carlo needs to make some radical changes, but more with his players than with his tactics.
Sorry for the long post!

But Ancelotti’s failure to spot the clues as to how Liverpool would approach their task at Stamford Bridge on Sunday also forms part of the picture. The word “clues” suggests some kind of cunning plan by Dalglish, though it was rather more obvious than that. Liverpool provided a sneak preview of the 3-5-1-1 system that suffocated Chelsea’s strikers, by using it against Stoke City at Anfield last Wednesday night.
On March 5, we will speak how Fergie will handle this situation..
cfc,

This rather bears out the reputation Ancelotti always had in Milan – as a manager with a rare ability to motivate and relax his players but less capable of responding to events with a radical solution to change a game. “The comparison was often made between him and Fabio Capello,” one observer said yesterday. “Capello was the one capable of making that vital snap decision. Ancelotti was not.”
The Chelsea manager did change formation to 4-3-3 eventually on Sunday, though that solution excluded Torres from the fray. And should the new acquisition have started the game in the first place? Probably not. Everyone at Anfield knows Torres can be an introspective soul who doesn’t respond when the tide of events go against him. His 29 touches in 66 minutes at Stamford Bridge, fewer than any other outfield player, told a story.

There is new that Hiddinck might join as sporting director but what we need is a good assistant coach .. After Steve clarke arrival , Liverpool has 4 clean sheets..
I saw that Guardian piece which essentially gave Clarke all the credit for Dalglish’s success. Ridiculous. I remember people writing that Manchester United would struggle when Alex Ferguson lost his tactically savvy assistant Carlos Quieroz. Crazy talk. I remember people fearing Chelsea would slump when Steve Clarke, the last connection to Mourinho, left. Double, anyone? Now, once again, assistants are being seen as a problem/solution at Chelsea.
Seems to me that supporters fetishize assistant managers in the same way they do unproven young players. It’s emotional, not logical, I feel.
To suggest Ancelotti was surprised by Liverpool’s formation stretches credulity, given that they’d played it four days earlier. (Newboy Torres’ comments notwithstanding.)
To say that Ancelotti is tactically inflexible doesn’t seem reasonable, given that he changed formations to 4-3-3 when he yanked Torres.
BC, surely you understand that the point is that even Chelsea’s saint, Jose Mourinho, gets criticized when his club struggles? That venting against the manager may feel good, but that accusing a manager with a record of success of being inept is a bit of a stretch?
Is Ancelotti faultless? No, of course not. Like you, I wonder what Ramires might have been able to achieve.
But the problem is that Chelsea were confronted by an unadventurous opponent which parked a double-bus in midfield and scored a lucky goal on a horrible blunder by Cech.
If not for that one mistake, the result would have been a draw. Precisely the result so many of these big matches end up with.
Chelsea players were motivated. They weren’t disinterested or sluggish. They were trying to sort their way through Liverpool’s packed midfield without losing possession.
It’s odd. I’m feeling unpopular here for defending the manager and taking a reasonable point of view.
Maybe when passions cool off and Ancelotti and these players win more matches, angry and frustrated supporters will take a more favorable view of them?
Wxwax,
It’s not about winning matches mate. I’m not saying things I say because we lost. There have been defeats and draws after which I have felt better than after certain wins. As I mentioned in the post, the result is for the owners. As a fan, I want to see the preparation and effort – from the managers and the players. I don’t see that. I hate seeing our team being clueless. We were late to realise, late to react and reacted/responded insufficiently. We weren’t bold enough, brave enough. Not even when we were 1-0 down for about 30 mins. For Carlo, 1-0 or 2-0 should not have made a difference. But Carlo seems to prefer losing 1-0 than taking a risk with the possibility of losing 2-0.
We have this phrase too many times during Felipe’s reign ‘we lacked a plan B’. Carlo’s Chelsea play in one way and the only way. When that fails, like on Sunday, we have absolutely no ideas what else to do. We end up doing the same thing over and over again with some blind hope. We are not intelligent. Some times, we gotta be clever and intelligent. That we are not. My gripe was not about losing. My gripe was around our inability to react and respond to the situation.
BC mate, I’m not understanding your point.
Late to change? Carlo switched players and formations at around 60 minutes. That’s a fairly typical departure point in football, as you know.
Liverpool scored right after that.
After securing the lead, Liverpool withdrew its fullbacks, officially parking the bus. After that, the 4-3-3 couldn’t make anymore of a dent than could the 4-1-2-1-2.
Or any other formation know to man.
Let me repeat: the match was a contest between a park-the-bus team and a team trying to actually score. Those matches often end as a draw. Sometimes, though, the defensive team scores a lucky goal.
That’s what happened on Sunday. Liverpool got lucky when Cech made a horrible blunder on a breakaway attack.
To blame Ancelotti for having trouble scoring against a team which made few efforts to win the game seems a bit silly.
wxwax,
60 mins was too late. Why can’t we make a first half change when things just don’t seem to happen? Anyway, I was not referring to subs as such. I was talking about the reaction and the response of the teams and how the manager should influence it.
So what are we saying here. When a team comes to park the bus at the Bridge, the best result we can expect us a draw and if we make a blunder a defeat? Our expectation can’t be that low. So what message does this performance send out the other teams in the league?
How much did we test their defence and their keeper? It took 10 mins into the match to realise how it’s panning out. Liverpool’s plan was crystal clear. Strangely, they ended up having closer chances than we did. To defend the manager and the players after such a performance only shows how low we have set our expectations for them.
You say “To blame Ancelotti for having trouble scoring against a team which made few efforts to win the game seems a bit silly.”
I’d say I’d blame the manager exactly for having trouble scoring against a team which made few efforts to win the game. Because where the other team plays to win, this Chelsea team will anyway win. It is only in the matches like the one on Subday, the manager earns his dough. This is exactly where we need the expertise, experience and ability of Carlo to steer us through.
Also let’s not talk as if what happened on Sunday was a rare occasion. It turns out that we haven’t turned a corner after all and we have been going through this ‘inability to score’ for man months now. Once we’re ‘found out’ we are suddenly out of ideas. This is neither a rare occasion and my reaction is nor a knee-jerk one.
BC, the score at 66 mins was 0-0.
That’s a fairly normal score in a big match. As you know, these affairs are typically tight and low-scoring.. So there was no reason to panic and throw out all the pregame planning without first giving it a real effort. That would send a terrible message to the players.
Overall Chelsea had more possession and a higher pass completion percentage than Liverpool. So it’s not like the game was out of control.
At 66 mins Ancelotti finally switched to the 4-3-3. Plenty of time to get a goal.
Situation normal. But then came Cech’s blunder and Liverpool completely went into their shell.
I’m not claiming Ancelotti was perfect. But to claim Chelsea should have made changes in the first half is not reasonable.
WXWAX
Looks like we’re turning this into our show :) Score being 0-0 and Chelsea having more possession means nothing. We never, never looked like scoring a goal. No matter what Carlo did, we never came close to scoring a goal, and this game was at home. No matter what we changed, our approach on the pitch didn’t change at all. Liverpool were very comfortable in negotiating us. We lost 0-3 to Sunderland at home. As far as we’re concerned that’s a home defeat. A 0-1 against Liverpool would also be considered as a home defeat. I don’t think we tried enough it different things to force a win. It looked like we were happy to take a 0-1 if a more high tempo offensive game might give us either a 2-1 or 0-3.
We were a bit afraid to go forward. We didnt quite believe we could win this match. This is an okay pool defence under a new manager. We didn’t test them at all. Because we lacked conviction in the attacks. We were a bit afraid to hit them hard, as we’ve been in the last few months.
