Decision time, folks! We need to make some real decisions with the arrival of Fernando Torres. By my count, there are at least three key decisions to be made – (a) What will be our formation (b) Who’s playing midfield (c) Who will get the chop for Torres (d) How much will Torres be played on Sunday

What will be our formation? I don’t know when was the last time we played a two-striker formation. Strangely though, we do have two of the finest strikers in the premier league. I did suggest in BC Shout that Anelka can play behind Torres and Drogba. Looks like this is seriously being considered. I would try that. Imagine Torres and Drogba with Anelka right behind them. The opposition defence will have a tough time making this lot. But honestly, I don’t see our changing our formation in an important match like this. I think we’d go ahead with the 4-3-3 and also this would influence the player selections.

Which formation should we play?

Loading ... Loading …

Both Essien and Lampard played well against Sunderland. Essien playing better than Lampard but both of them still below the high standards set by themselves. Essien was more in control of the midfield as the attacks went through him, thanks to Bosingwa, while Lampard was getting into the box more often than he has been of late. Mikel was okay. He was a bit suspect. ‘Rambo’ was unfortunate to be benched but I guess he was rested more than benched.

In a three man midfield, I can only think of Essien, Rambo and Lamps. In this selection, Essien will have to get back to the defensive midfield. That’s a position he has not shined well for many months now. I’d go to the extent of saying, in defensive midfield, he’s could be a disaster waiting to happen. On the other hand, playing in a more attacking role, he seems to show more confidence. In my mind, Rambo is right now playing better than Lamps and Ess. He is my first choice midfielder, and then comes Lampard, Essien and Mikle – in that order. I’d drop Mikel but if I sense that Essien is getting back his ‘losing the ball in dangerous areas’ instincts, I’d replace him with Mikel.

I don’t see Drogba getting the axe. Carlo is not the one to drop players for poor performance. I can guarantee you that. Drogba is a big match player and Carlo would love to play him against Liverpool, inspite of his below-par performances. And, for the kind of man-manager Carlo is, he’s not going to drop Drogba the first match that Torres is available for us. It sends out a signal to Drogba. Anelka was terrific last match. He was the man of the match and for this reason alone, he deserves to start. To drop Anelka to the bench is pure madness.

Having bought Torres for £50m or so, and because he’s fit and ready, Carlo is not going to miss an opportunity to make his debut at Stamford Bridge against his ex-club. There are a few things that he can get over from day one itself – playing at home, meeting ex-colleagues, taking the brunt of the away fans etc – he’s gotta do all this one day. For him, it can be his first day in the Chelsea office.

So, adding all these together, it appears we might play all three – Torres, Drogba and Anelka. If I’ve known Carlo well enough, this is what he will do: (a) Play 4-3-3 and start with Drogba, Anelka and Malouda (b) Around 50 mins, bring on Torres for Anelka (c) Move Drogba to the right wing. This way, he can keep the interest with all the three. So basically, Torres plays but no one gets the chop. This may not continue like this forever. Carlo needs to make some firm medium plans.

I think Torres will not start and he will not play for more than 30-35 minutes. Liverpool can be a nasty team at times. Typically in the initial 10-15 minutes they’d mad-tackle anyone including the referee and the linesmen. They play so high tempo and would try to close us down like dogs. Given the backdrop, I don’t think Carlo might want to risk Torres from the start. You’d have the thousands of away fans waiting to give their piece of mind to Fernando. I’d wait for them to get tired, knock a couple of goals and quiet them down and then bring the new prince Fernando in the second half. I guess this should be the plan.

Personally though, I stick him on the pitch from kick off. I’d give him as much time as possible. That’s mostly because I want to keep seeing him in the Chelsea colours. I’m gonna get goosebumps when I see Torres in Chelsea Blue playing against Liverpool Reds. What a sight that would be!

Here’s Torres talking like he knows what he’s talking about.

The Champions League is the main thing. I know the ambition this club has about winning the Champions League, and it is the same ambition that I have. I think the ambition of this team is to keep winning trophies every year, so I have the same motivation. Talking about that, we are all thinking the same thing.

Get in there, Fernando! You’ve arrived at the right club, finally!

Okay then, what would be your decision for this match wrto the team selection. Let’s not choose the eleven. Let’s choose the ten. Anyway, Petr Cech seems to be a sure starter. He’s a top professional who needs no competition to keep himself on his toes. He is the best goalkeeper out there and to put him alongside Hilario and make it look like there is a choice is an insult to him.

So, let’s choose the outfield players for the match against Liverpool:

Who Should Start Against Man Utd on Sunday?

Excellent piece in Zonal Marking about the return of the diamond.

You make an interesting point about Torres not starting.

But eventually I see Anelka as the tip of the diamond behind Drogba and Torres. Ramires is built to be a diamond midfielder. But really, the rest of the midfield is hard to predict. Essien is better playing higher, which means Obi is the holding. No room for Lamps? Unthinkable. So it will be interesting to see what Carlo does.

There was this rumour from ‘The Sun’ about five Chelsea players to leave in this summer. And one of them was John Obi Mikel. Now, not even for a moment I want you to think I take ‘The Sun’ seriously but that was the first time I saw something about Obi Mikel leaving Chelsea. We’ve seen rumours of almost all players not Mikel. With Rambo in, I wonder what’s the growth plan for Mikel? And we’re not even talking about Josh! And this is the squad that was supposed to be lacking depth!

I truly think Torres may not be starting. If he does, I’ll be elated but I think Carlo will take the conservative route. Carlo seems to be an intriguing personality. His teams are very offensive but he comes across as very conservative. Bit of an opposite of the other certain manager who is my gravatar . . oh no . . I’ve got a new one!

i doubt using the 4-3-3, it looks to me that carlo already made up his mind on 4-diamond-2 but i chose these players:
    cech
    ivanovic-luiz-terry-cole
    essien
    ramires-lampard
    anelka
    torres-drogba

Great article..but I don’t think they really play 4/3/3…as if you look at the last game Anelka had the licence to go anywhere which he did really well as he can hold the ball and beat a player and pass which put opponets in 2 minds as to what he would do…basically Dogba and Kalou played up front and the other player in a rigid spot being mikel…all the others interchanged at will..with the 2 backs making width and getting in the crosses…no I think we will have the same team..except Torres comes on for Kalou..Torres will be pumped and I think so too Drogba who knows he needs to perform to keep his position…tipping more goals for us!

Chelsea will be interested in a salary dump. But who goes? Essien? Lampard? Terry? Drogba? Anelka?

Those are the guys making the big money, I would think, no?

Well, now that all the kids are getting playing time, I’d expect at least 2-3 to break into the first team – something Carlo and the club led us to believe for this season. The purchase of a young all-purpose defender like David Luiz is already a bad news for Bruma, Mancienne and van Aanholt. I don’t see any of these playing a consistent role in the first team in the next two seasons. This is one reason why we are not a favourite destination for youngsters that we look to sign.

Liverpool and their Always- Sulk- Together fans will be pumped up for a fight on Sunday…..they have their reputations on the line……. They will try to show they are better than us…and start a blitzkrieg from the first minute… so in my humble opinion… I forward the notion of setting up the team…. to pass around a lot in the middle to infuriate them …..play on the counter when possible… and …… have Anelka, Kalou or whoever dribble into their corners endlessly ………pump the ball to Drogs from our side of pitch or into stands….

To do all that stuff, Carlo can choose whoever is best to infuriate …tease… madden and fuck up their game plan…

Then when they are ripe for picking……. send Torres on as decoy and have half of the red team marking / chasing / sniffing him while we slot in one goal after another……

    JoseHoliday,

Totally agree. Liverpool always start on hyper-tempo and try to get the match under their control right from kick off. We’re traditionally late starters, waking up only after we concede. So, we need to be conscious and not fall for this trap. The truth is, Liverpool have no quality. They have heart but if you control the match for about 20-30 mins, they’ll go back to their mediocrity. But we need to play very carefully and not to be provoked or bullied by them.

It’s for this reason, I’d drop a Mikel. I’d play Lampard, Ramires and Essien. Mikel, in his current form, has the potential to be a disaster waiting to happen.

    BlueChampion,

I wouldn’t assume that these guys are good enough. They may be, and if they are they’ll prove it over the next couple of years.

But one of the reasons Frank Arnesen is leaving is because in 5 years he’s not produced a single starting player. He doesn’t even get credit for McEachran, who was already in the Chelsea system.

    WXWAX,

I think our expectations are different. In a couple of years, they may not have the opportunity to play with Lampard, Drogba & Terry at their best. Considering how old our talismanic players are, now is the perfect time for the young blues to be understudy and apprentice to these champions. My point always has been that they’ll learn better with the Chelsea squad than elsewhere. I’m okay for 6-months loan but I fear any longer period wouldn’t do us any good.

WXWAX: But one of the reasons Frank Arnesen is leaving is because in 5 years he’s not produced a single starting player.

Frank Arnesen is leaving because he has been offered a leading position within the Danish FA (DBU) at the end of his contract with Chelsea.

    Formation vs Liverpool:
    ————————————————-CECH————————————————
    FERREIRA———————-IVANOVIC———————-TERRY—————–COLE
    —————————————————RAMIRES——————————————
    ——————-LAMPARD————————————-MALOUDA———————–
    ——————————————–ANELKA—————————————————
    ———————————DROGBA———————–TORRES————————–

I’m playing Ferreira simply because I cannot stand Bosingwa’s sloppiness, lack of defensive qualities and the poorest crosses in the EPL. Second choice would have been Bruma, but apparently he’s loaned out to Leicester.
Malouda and Ramires can interchange as holding midfielder. Anelka should be allowed to roam freely. He was
awesome in that capacity vs Sunderland. Torres and DD will find their way of playing up front, and I think we will be in for a treat tomorrow when the show what damage they can cause opposition.
Obviously when Luiz starts playing we can move Ivanovic out wide, and we can put Bosingwa on this summers transfer list.

Frank Arnesen is leaving with the hope… emphasis on hope… of becoming the next coach of the Danish national team. That’s a worthy and face-saving goal, when the alternative is being booted.

BC, to me the point is that Chelsea FC isn’t a school. It’s a top club with high expectations. The only people wearing the shirt should be those who can win the club trophies. Playing on loan will not hurt the prospects, just as playing for “smaller” clubs hasn’t hurt Drogba, Torres, Lampard, Ivanovic, etc etc etc. It will, however, reveal if they’re good enough to win Chelsea silverware.

The Daily Mail has the interesting speculation that Ancelotti may want to try Luiz at holding midfield. Luiz said he’d play anywhere they put him. Hmmm…

    Wxwax,

I fully agree with you that Chelsea FC is not a school. And I do believe that there are only good and bad players instead of old and young players. The point around using the youth is more fromthe economic point of view. We may not move out of Stamford Bridge. If we can’t increase revenues, we should find way to reduce them. Getting the best out of your young crop is one sure shot way. And also it’s very important to have home-grown heroes. We can field eleven players from eleven countries but it’s a matter of pride to field some players from your own backyard.

In any case, there was a point (which lasted for a few weeks) when any of these youngsters wouldn’t have done any worse than the seniors. You can call it hindsight but that’s okay because I’m not paid to manage Chelsea FC. The club administration and management are. We dropped the ball there and by this, we’ve probably delayed the development of our young players by a year.

You saw last weekend what competition in this ream can bring out. Josh can be threat for our midfielders, if we develop him properly. Same with Anholt and Bruma.

Laptop not working because the charger is broken. If I could have chatted last night I would have stated how my school did an amazing demolition against a team who was big, fast, strong but luckily unorganized, running everywhere. Two points I would love to share, one of my friends made a Messi like run against them and it was saddening he didn’t score after beating 5 defenders on the left side coming from the half way line. Only if the goalkeeper wasn’t there is what went through my head. He did score 2 goals though. Other point, a massive half volley about 5 yards above the half way line, right infront where I was standing shouting at the other team like Liverpool will be this Sunday, one of my other friends scores a wonderful shot. He didn’t mean it but that goal sealed a wonderful 4-1 victory. The goal we conceded was a mistake in our back four, our defenders started arguing because it was the first time of the match we had lost the man. It did take the other team 3 tries to beat our keeper though.

    On to the Liverpool match.

    4-1-2-1-2 (left to right)

    ——————————Cech——————————
    —A.Cole———-Terry———-Luiz———-Ivanovic—
    ——————————Ramires—————————–
    ————-Lampard——————–Essien————-
    —————————–Anelka——————————
    ——————–Drogba———-Torres——————–

Read my other post on how we should play. It is on the match report against Sunderland.

Anywho, the main thing I will talk about is why I choose to play Ramires there instead of Essien.

First of all, Ramires is proven in that position for Benfica and Brazil and about 3 Chelsea matches. He has the passing ability, the strength, the Makelele like tackles, everything thing that Mikel has and more and most importantly, he is our most on form midfielder. I have been supporting him from the start and guess what, you all are finally realising why.

Essien has defensive qualites but here is the thing, he best used as a vice to Lampard. Being right behind Lampard, backing him up when Lampard goes up to slot in a goal. Ramires then is best used right behind Essien, if for some odd reason, or at this point in time, very normal occasion someone out muscles or jinxes past Essien.

Oh here is another interesting point to comment on. The fact that Torres WILL score. Here is why.

He says he wants to score.
Luiz says he is glad he isn’t defending him Sunday.
He says he will not celebrate.
Carlo says he is ready to demolish Liverpool.
Terry says everyone is frightened of us again.

Here is what we need to do.

Look at our performance against them last time out, ask Torres what they are currently doing and look at their performance against Wolves.

    One will say:

From kickoff control the midfeld. With a diamond we can do exactly that.

Press early to get a goal. If we don’t they will and trust me, with Suarez and Carrol, it will be deadly.

Get crosses into the box and keep Skrtel as far away as possible from an aerial ball.

Use A. Cole as much as possible. With Ivanovic on the right, one less man marking A. Cole. With Anelka, Drogba and Torres upfront. 4 less men marking A. Cole. With Lampard and Essien regaining form,… enough said.

Use Torres as bait, get Anelka down, retrieve, killer ball, goal!

Gerrard, Suarez and the Kop will be the dangers of that day.

Last point. It is amazing what the Kop have to say about the men that saved them from relegation. Torres and Benitez. Without Torres, Liverpool would be nothing. Without Benitez, there would be no Torres, Reina and Gerrard would be at Chelsea.

Can’t wait till I get a new charger. Oh and this one last point.

On my FM 11 save. Man City are very interesting. Guess who is managing them, he is a special person, he is big headed, he is currently about to leave a very huge team in Spain. Also Tottenham, being managed by Alan Shearer, is a team I would love to manage right now. They play a 4-5-1, but I would play a 4-4-1-1 if I were Alan. By the way, Man Utd bought Bale for 30m.

    4-4-1-1 (left to right)

    Gomes
    Wilson – Jones – Shawcross – Cristico
    J. Cole – Modric – Huddlestone – Palacios
    Van der Vaart
    Dzeko

Two goals in two games for Sturridge. If there’s one good thing about Carlo not playing him it’s that his surge in form came just as Chelsea also returned to form, so no harm done.

If he keeps this up, he’ll present Chelsea with interesting choices this summer. Keep him and drop a highly paid oldster like Anelka or Drogba. Or trade him for welcome cash.

That’s only true of managers. And not all of them, either.

Peter Kenyon was allowed to announce his departure a couple of months before leaving to pursue “other opportunities.” He walked before he was fired. http://bit.ly/h2Vl02 Said opportunities have yet to materialize. His WIki bio hasn’t been updated since his departure.

That’s very similar to Arnesen “quitting” to pursue another “opportunity.” This “opportunity” is to manage the Danish national team. At this point it seems only reasonable to observe that Arnesen’s managerial experience was as an assistant to Bobby Robson at PSV from 1991-93. In that light, his quest to manage the Danish national team seems a bit, well, Quixotic.

Unwanted players are given their release when their contracts expire, e.g. Joe Cole and Michale Ballack.

Even Ray Wilkins wasn’t fired early. Lost in all the hubub is that his contract was not renewed. The fact that his contract expired in the middle of a season was an awkward result of the emergency conditions of his hiring. He served his time and was not renewed.

Just like Frank Arnesen knew he would not be renewed. I’m wondering what the odds are that he’ll be Denmark’s next manager? *evil grin*

Here are two excellent analyses of how Ancelotti might change formations to make room for Torres.

Jonathan Wilson, who a superb job describing football tactics, thinks Ancelotti will likely opt for a 4-1-3-2.
“The best solution is probably a 4-1-3-2 — a flattened diamond — with Essien or Mikel holding and Malouda, Lampard and Ramires providing support to Torres and Drogba from midfield. It’s a system with balance, although it’s hard not to feel that, for all the energy and power in that midfield, there is little in the way of flair.”
    http://bit.ly/dHLIeA

ESPN Soccernet’s Jim Carter sees Carlo switching between a 4-2-3-1 for big teams and a classic diamond 4-1-2-1-2 for the others. But he notes that Ancelotti has had success with a 4-3-2-1.
“Ancelotti won the Champions League with AC Milan in 2007 with a 4-3-2-1 and could certainly be persuaded that flooding the midfield in a big game would be the way to go, without it marking a drastic change from his preferred diamond.”

WXWAX: In that light, his quest to manage the Danish national team seems a bit, well, Quixotic.

You’re the only one speculating that Arnesen is going for the manager (landstræner) position. He is looking for an administrative position within the DBU (Danish FA).
By the way can you name another assistant to Bobby Robson? I can help you saying his nick name is TSO.

Dana, it was in all the papers when he announced he was “quitting.”

Look it up, easy to find. He wants to replace the venerable current coach, who is finally retiring (voluntarily!)

Here ya go, DB. mind you, this is after Chelsea announced he was leaving “to pursue other opportunities.” The familiar euphemism.

Just finished watching Wolves-UnIted. Other than the typical-but-mysterious decision to award Manchester United 5 minutes and 27 seconds of added time, the thing that stood out is United’s inability to really threaten in the second half.

Normally they’re very fluent on the attack. This was a bad day, completely off. Credit to Wolves for playing staunch defense. But United’s failings on the road continue. They may have paid the price for using 37 year-old Giggs so often of late. For once, he wasn’t terribly threatening.

    Here is Frank Arnesen.

‘There is always a natural development for young players and one thing that has been very important is that they have been training every day at the highest level – training with players like Ballack, Terry, Lampard, Drogba – and I know from my own experience when I was 18 coming into the team at Ajax that you learn so much every day in this period of a young player’s life.

See I’m no fan of Arnesen. If anything I have bitter memories of his reported role in the removal of my beloved Jose Mourinho. It looks easy and fashionable to blame Arnesen for not having enough youth in the first team. To be fair to him, he was responsible, among other things, for scouting and preparing young players. But the first team manager has an equal responsibilty to develop these young players. Even if we had Lionel Messi at 17 years of age, we wouldn’t have developed him as a Barca or a Man Utd or Bayern would have. That’s because of our approach to the whole thing which in my opinion, people like Sncelotti and Arnesen should be able to innocent. Oh I’m going on and on like a broken record.

LOL! I enjoyed the Man Utd defeat – only watched the first and last 10 mins though. What gave me immense pleasure was Arsenal’s collapse in the last 30 minutes. Only Arsenal can do it and I love it when they do it. All this will be sweet only if we beat Liverpool today!

It was in all the English papers and transcripts there off. All of it was rumours and speculations. Living partly in Denmark I have followed Arnesens resignation with interest in the Danish media, which presented much more fact based journalism in this matter. When it became clear that Morten Olsen wanted to retire from the national team, Arnesen was considered as a replacement as his time with Chelsea would end as well. That was however denied by both Arnesen and DBU. Both parties did not consider Arnesen was having the right qualifications.

All is Well! All is well mates, so far. Things are going incredibly good since feb. We got torres. Manure drop points. Diaby, the angry young man, put up a very good performance. I am able to sell my old car and I moved to California from Florida…. all is well. Coming on to the match, living in Pacific time is something i would not cherish for watching EPL. Luckily for me its an 8:00 am kick off here and I would be hoping to watch this game without sacrificing my usual saturday late nights, you know!

I just want to win this game, to make it sweeter. I would not worry too much on the formation or whom we are playing. for the poll’s sake I did not select Essien starting spot and I would like to give the place to Anelka only because of this incredible show he put up last match. Carlo has tricks up his sleeve and he surprised everyone by playing anelka at the tip of his beloved diamond. Its hard to believe the changes that happen so quickly when players like torres comes in. Malouda is no longer a sure starter given his form last season, isn,t that a token of competency’s in the squad?

DD might get the nod ahead of torres even though the last game he played is not that great for him. He is the best person I like in this squad after Lampsy, its hard to agree with time or facts that he is getting old or might be going to RM at the end of this season. I hope he goes on for another 5 years.

We dont have a real threat in Lpool, but this guy Suarez might start in the match. You know this Uruguay guys, they wont give up. He is in the mold of Tevez who is a gritty fighter. I just hope we cool this dude off and we can happily bag 3 points. Thanks to the thigh injury of Carroll. I would still give Mikel a starting berth. He is very good at CDM, lasts game goal is just one off for him. It would boost his confidence tremendously if he can keep Stevie quiet. Rambo takes the other spot on the right in the diamond, his natural position to set up more attacking plays. Its a gamble to let off Essien, but I somehow feel this is the best attacking threats we can provide.

Ancelloti plays it very cautiously and for that I doubt he will start with both new boys…but on the other hand Ambrovich wants to see his new striker start paying back the investment so torres will start with Luiz coming on later…this is bigger than normal this game because of united slip up which was well over due..so we can get 3 points back and work on the goal difference as well!

I thought I would like to speculate a little regarding our remaining away fixtures, because this is where the EPL will be won. I fully expect us to win our home games, that’s a requirement if you want to win the Championship.

Apr 14 Monday at 20:00 FULHAM
This should be the easiest of our last away games and I don’t expect any surprises here. We should expect 3 points at The Cottage

Mar 7 Monday at 20:00 BLACKPOOL
Blackpool started out as the big new surprise in the EPL, but the strain on the squad is beginning to show. However a difficult away game, but we play them at a time where Blackpool is not in a desperate relegation battle. 3 points

Apr 2 Saturday at 15:00 STOKE CITY
Always difficult to take points from Stoke, but by now the Anelka, Drogba and Torres Triad (ADT Attacking Dream Team) is lethal and too hard to handle for Stoke. 3 points

Apr 16 Saturday at 15:00 WEST BROMWICH ALBION
Very likely that West Bromwich are in a fierce relegation battle, making this fixture very tricky. Anticipate 3 points, but this could be a stumbling block.

May 7 Saturday at 15:00 MANCHESTER UNITED
The game of the season. By now we have fought our way straight back into the Championship battle. We may even be ahead as Manure showed vs Wolves how lucky they have been in most of their drawn games. And their luck is running on empty. Wouldn’t it be great to celebrate as Champions at Old Trafford? 3 Championship points!!!!

May 22 Sunday at 16:00 EVERTON
If May 7 turns out the way I predict, then this will be our round of honour. However slipping up at Old Trafford could make this the Championship decider. And vs Everton it will be unbearably exciting, not for the faint hearted. The various connotations of this last weekend could be the stuff of a Hitchcock film.

no doubt, we were in the best form when Ivanovic was played in the wing, and he was free to roam about. Bosingwa is a good player, but he is not up to par with Ivanovic. Essien used to be a offensive player, but looking at the way he is shooting recently, i feel it would be good if we settle him for CDM. Anelka is not the striker if we see his qualities. He is more like an attacking midfielder, and plays like that. so he should be in CAm position. I guess that leaves us to following formation:

    ———————————————-cech——————————————-
    Ivanovic—————Luiz/Bruma———————–Terry—————-A. cole
    ——————————————Essien——————————————-
    ———-ramires/mikel———————————————–Lampard—————-
    —————————————Anelka———————————————-
    ——————–kalou/DD————————————Torres——————-
