That’s what I thought. Like how the near golden boot winner ‘Own goal’ helped Man Utd all along last season, this ‘Bad Moment’ has been chasing us to drive us out of the season. The first half was nothing much to brag about, in a way it was a bit like the second half. Everton had most of the ball, they looked to sharper and quicker. We were being our recent selves – pondering and pondering.
Anelka got couple of chances where he had clear sight of the goal only to realise he had better sight of Tim Howard. On the other end, we were shaky at the back. This was another display by Ivanovic to show why he is not a natural centre back. Lovely player but has a long way to go before becoming an established centre back.
I don’t want to be proved right about Essien. He was bad. Let’s admit it. In this match, he wasn’t even playing in an offensive role. He was in defensive midfield playing a classic holding role. He was only meant to break up attacks, provide cover at the back and make simple distributions. For a player like Essien, this must have pretty natural and easy. He did a decent job but not what you’d expect of Essien. He ended up creating attacks, for Everton. He can be many things but disaster is not one. He had my heart in my mouth a few times. Very unEssien.
Ramires is best improved player this season for us. If he continues like this for a couple more months, he is my Chelsea player of the season. I’m just loving his runs through the centre. In premier league, it’s not often possible to make his kind of runs right through the centre of the pitch. He does it quite easily. And that 86th minute screamer was stunning!! He’s developing to be a fine player and he could probably be our best post-Mourinho signing.
Having Ramires and Lampard in the centre midfield should give us a lot variety in our how we build our attacks. We saw some Ramires-inspired moves and some delightful balls from Lampard which only tells me that all we need to do is to use these fine gentlemen in building our attacks. As we play 4-3-3 with a holding midfielder, most of our attacks happen through the flanks and this reduces the possible involvement of Ramires and Lampard. With ‘Rampard’ (there you go, another word coined), we’re well within our strengths to play 4-4-2 diamond kind of formation so we can get the best from them.
Our attacks down the wings are totally predictable. We don’t have magicians on either wings to spring surprises. Watch us play down the wings – we do the same things over and over. If Everton had watches the recording of our last few matches, they know too well what to do and especially where to do. Malouda not being at his best has had an impact on Ashley Cole as well. They work in tandem and if the winger isn’t doing well, the wing back won’t be able to do any better. Our right side is perennially under-strength. Bosingwa and Anelka – I don’t even know if they understand each other well – leave alone a chemistry. They just don’t make a pair. More often that not, Bosingwa is left alone with no support. While our left side is adequate but currently effective, the right side is terribly inadequate. Hence I think that we should look to attack through the middle to get the best out of ‘Rampard’ and also avoid the ineffective wing attacks.
Louis Saha is one striker that I fear. He is an extremely talented player whose career was ruined by injuries. If not for the injuries, he’d have become a great premier league player. In the Mourinho days, we had the best defensive set ups in England, if not in Europe. It was never easy to beat us. Scoring against was a realy prize and a moment of pride for anyone. At Old Trafford, Saha scored this beauty against us that left Carvalho, Terry and Cech wondering what hit them. It required something very special to score a goal like that against the Chelsea of 05-06 and he was! He has always troubled Chelsea and yesterday was no different. John Terry just couldn’t contain him in a dead ball situation. He scored and Mr. Bad Moment was lurking around the corner.
We didn’t go after them with power, force, revenge and aggression. We continued to do what we were doing since the kick off. Luckily for us, Everton didn’t sit back to defend their lead. They wanted to build on their lead. We got the ball moving in a counterattack and Kalou surprised all, including probably himself, with a beautiful finish that even the best striker in the world would be proud of. He was being blocked by three defenders, there was some distance, he was in an angle, had the goalkeeper make his full stretch and still managed to score with a sweet shot. Delightful!
This was an evenly contested match but Everton was slightly better and were more likely to win the match. A score draw is something I’d take happily given that we could’ve gone out of the cup. The way we played made Everton think that they could win this match – all 90 minutes. They were not afraid of Chelsea at all. They weren’t worried about the damage that we could inflict on them. They played like they were equals. We gave them the belief. But I’m happy that we’re still in the cup. We might have congested our February which was already very busy. Anyway, at least, we showed the door to Mr. Bad Moment but I think he’s just waiting outside the door.
So, no more David Luiz. Well then, we know how to move on, don’t we? In comes Fernando Torres. Lovely drama as Liverpool rejecting our bid and news trickling out that Torres has handed a transfer request to leave in this very window that ends tomorrow. Nice one Fernando! The talks are still on. The valuation is mind boggling. I wouldn’t pay anything more than 30m pounds for him considering how injury prone he is, at such young age. And I don’t want to part with any Chelsea player in this deal, ok Paulo Ferreira may be. We’re playing Liverpool next weekend; will he be ours by then? And yes, if we have learnt anything from Chelsea FC, don’t place too many hopes on signing Torres tomorrow.
We’re playing Sunderland away on Tuesday night. I guess we owe them something. Let’s make it a night to remember. Cheers and have a nice weekend!

One extra game is what we need the last! But anyway it is good to be still in the FA Cup!
I have always been saying that Kalou is a SUPER-SUB!
I couldn’t watch the match but now i don’t regret it because it would really have been painful to see Essien play like what BC said. Anyway, an unwanted extra match but still the worth being in contention for the Cup.
BC, i like RAMPARD and i am so excited to see them again. I take back all the grumblings that i have made against Ramires. I expected too much too soon, i am all smiles and i have framed a nice photo of Ramires! It will remain prominently in my living room wall!
And yes, i badly want Chelsea to thrash black cats on Tuesday, it would be nice if Ramires scores!
And finally, i hope and pray that we don’t buy Torres. He is not a penny’s worth more than Suarez! If Roman really want to open his wallet again, let’s get Shinji Kagawa, Dzagoev and Luiz! These three combined wouldn’t cost more than what we are preparing to pay for Torres alone!
Hey Karma! Why don’t you want Torres? Granted, he is injury-prone but when he’s on, he’s a deadly striker who’s young and strong. He’s a proven premier league star. He’s exactly the kind of striker we might want to replace Drogba with. Fernando’s work rate is not upto the Chelsea mark but then look at Anelka then and now. We can make him better. When Lampard has two top strikers in Torres and Drogba to find the end of the passes, imagine how much can we create and score. All said, I don’t want this to be a very expensive buy. Plus, I don’t want Anelka or Sturridge to go.
P.S: The images do look good, don’t they? I’ve made a few changes to how images would look inside the article. I love the end result.
BC,
I want Torres as well but not at the current price! However great or finished article he is, if he is going to be in the medication room more than on the pitch, what is the point to buy him. The price is too high and i wouldn’t really bug him at anything more that 25 million pounds. Suarez costs lesser but yes he is not a proven EPL star but it would still be a good buy to get Suarez at a price lesser than the half of what we would be paying to Torres. With the money that we would be splashing on Torres we could buy at least a two world-class players who is equally effective as Torres.
About BC, everything had improved; i love the current features so much that i have even forgotten what the old look was!
One thing, with 50 million, we can buy Rooney, ask rednose!
Never kick a man when he lying down, but honestly Essien was so poor yesterday that it was almost painful to watch. He needs some time on the bench and I would suggest McE as temporary replacement.
And where was Lampard yesterday. I don’t think the commentator said his name once in the whole game apart from in the starting line-up before the match. Okay he’s just been injured and may not be fully fit, But why on earth is Carlos playing him then (maybe the saga of the untouchables)?
Everton was clearly on a mission to revenge the FA Cup final defeat a year ago, and they nearly succeeded had it not been for Ramires and Kalou. The step over from Ramires to leave it for Kalou was a stroke of genius as it completely transfixed the Toffee defence and the finishing from Kalou was as cool as a cucumber.
Anelka then! Where has he left his first touch? It’s been missing for weeks. So the Torres 50M + Anelka might not be such a bad idea. Recent rumours states that Roman is prepared to spend 100M on transfers this window. He needs to splash it quickly as there’s just about 36 hrs before the window closes again.
Cech and Ivanovic were both in top form (apart from a slight mis-kick from Ivanovic). JT was average, in fact he nearly cost us a goal due to a brain dead back pass. Bosingwa, what can I say I have never liked him, he has no variation in his game and he’s a poor defender.
Drogba had one of his sulky days with stupid dives and pretend injuries. I’m sometimes embarrassed to watch it and I fully understand the opposition fans are having a real go at him when he has those days. Lastly there’s Malouda and Ashley. The former showed improvements with quick feets and nice passes, the latter solid as usual.
Conclusion: had it not been for Cech, Ramires and Ivanovic, we would have been out of the FA Cup. The others could learn a lot from those 3′s attitude, concentration and commitment.
Karma
Fair enough. My thoughts as well. Don’t want Torres at a premier league record price. Higher the cost – higher the pressure; on Chelsea’s balance sheet and on FernandoTorres to be the golden boot winner on season 1. And yes, you’re right. If we’re planning to splash out so much, why don’t we widen our search – see who else could be available for that price – less injury prone, younger and more effective.
Thanks about the comments on BC. I guess I’ve hit the sweet spot, finally!
DanaBlue,
Would politely disagree on Ivanovic and Lampard.
Ivanovic: Lots of heart and lots of determination and commitment but he was out of position many a times. His positional awareness was a bit suspect. When a centre back goes out of position, it gives so much confidence to the opposition. Never made me feel we were ‘rock solid’ in the central defence. Terry had a good match, not easy to play this Everton team with their tactics but then he was at fault for the goal..
Lampard: As I mentioned in the post, our game plan did not involve so much of Lampard. When he got the ball, he let Anelka through on a couple of times. Anelka should have finished them, just no excuses there. I thought Lampard was okay. He wasn’t poor or anything. That’s what I thought.
BlueChampion,
As long as you do it politely I’m okay with that.
Draw with Everton is not bad result… We didn’t get good points from there when we were excellent either.
Instead of spending so much on a single player why not go buy 3-4 younger players who aren’t fully established yet? When we signed Essien he was just 23 and had only started to establish himself in France. Chelsea doesn’t need 1 player. We need a RWB (to replace the ineffective Bosingwa), a backup at LWB (to let Cole rest and heal), a CAM (to backup Lampard and let Ramires play CM with Essien), and a winger to push Anelka and Malouda. That’s 3 important bench players (RWB, CAM, and LW/RW) and a backup (LWB).
Chelsea should look at players age 20-23 who are playing on teams not in the UEFA Champions League nor in race for the top sport in their country. Players I’d look at would include Hulk, Ruiz, Berg, Toivonen, Dzagoev, Santon, Criscito, De Silvestri, Alexis Sánchez and, Arda Turan.
Several notes to the match:
1) Ramires was really GREAT. Not only for the shot that reminded me of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink at his best. Not only for his nice runs through the middle. He also did several nice defensive tackles, especially a wonderful run back till the goal line where he prevented an Everton player from tucking the cross from the right till the open net. The praise from Cech was really deserved. And – moreover – I really loved his part in the crucial counterattack. May be that the pass from the left was originally meant to him. But he was knowing of Kalou in the better position on the right side, so he cleverly let the ball go to him. Reminded me of Gianluca Vialli at that moment. These two moments indicate that Ramires could be a great team player, ready to help other players when needed and to die for the club he is playing for. This is the player we need.
2) JT was actually not average, he was awful. Even when he is average, he does not loose the ball so easily. Even then, he does not pass it straight to the opponent – in fact, when we last saw him doing things like this? Then his role in the received goal. His task was only to guard Saha, no positioning and guarding space etc. But he went towards the ball like a junior, it flew over his head and Saha had an easy job then. Hope that JT gets back to his old days soon; this is quite dangerous.
3) When it comes to the strategy, I actually don´t think it was Carlo´s aim to attack only on the flanks. But it is quite difficult to combine through the middle when you don´t have a quality central attacker to whom you can pass the ball and expect him to hold it or distribute around. Yesterday, we really did not have such a player. Drogba was well covered and could not physically outmuscle his guard, Anelka was rather trying to get the ball somewhere in the midfield and hold it as long as possible. So this is what prevented us from creating a decent attack through the middle – and so we were forced to trying our predictable wing attacks.
we dont need strikers!!!! we need defenders like Cahill or Showcross, we need more english player guys!!!! come on!! this is the strongest league there are no places for smurfs like messi, aguero, nasri, suarez etc!!!!

julio,
English players are extremely overrated, and this comes from an English national team fan.
Chelsea board and Roman are a funny bunch they keep giving the fans high hopes of landing a big player .How can they bid for Torres at the last minute, very interesting guys GUYS… Chelsea board are a bunch of JOKERS !!!!!!
I am against deals that include any player….. plus, Torres is not worth 50 M. Torres top price is 2o to 25 M
We’re finding out where Ramires fits in England. He tackles, he covers, and he makes great runs down the middle, with or without the ball. Anelka missed a golden chance to feed him in the second half. Chelsea will improve when he makes more runs and they get him the ball.
Lampard was practically invisible. Slow. He has a long way to go to be the player he once was.
Essien should be a natural holding mid but he never seems to play well there. His passing was very poor, again. He’s better going forward than distributing. McEachran is a better distributor but he’s just too skinny to be a holding mid.
Drogba was sensational in the first half. A real bruiser. But when Chelsea’s midfield lost control of the game in the second half he disappeared.
Same with Anelka. Good first half, unfed in second half.
Terry made some poor plays. But Chelsea could easily have conceded more in the second, so I give him credit for keeping the defense together.
Cech was just outstanding. Great game, vital saves.
I felt relief at the end of the game. But be honest, 1-1 at a rocking Goodison Park is a good result.
Chelsea didn’t play any kids, despite looming fixture congestion. That tells me Ancelotti thinks the only silverware the club can win this season is the FA Cup.
I’ll repeat myself:
Chelsea didn’t play any kids, despite looming fixture congestion. That tells me Ancelotti thinks the only silverware the club can win this season is the FA Cup.
As Chelsung said, it is not a bad result to draw Everton at Goodison Park, remember that we had two goalless draws (home and away) last season!
I can’t believe Fernando Torres left Liverpool???
