My Chelsea love story will not be complete without a mention about Bolton. Just like for Chelsea FC, who won their first title in 50 years against Bolton, they show up in an event of historic significance for me. Like Forrest Gump. My first and only (so far) match ever at Stamford Bridge was played against Bolton. That was a nervy win but an important win nevertheless. I remember how tense I was. I wanted us to win and keep our title chase. Also more importantly I wanted my first match at Stamford Bridge to be a memorable one. Thanks to Nicolas Anelka’s head, it certainly was.
Our travel to Reebok happnens with the knowledge that both Man Utd and Arsenal have won their matches fairly convincingly. Yes, Man City have lost to a goal from the 24m striker but I don’t think we should peg ourselves against teams beyond the top two. Is this a new found arrogance? Not really. If we truly think that our winning ways are back, why don’t we give it all and set our sights high?
Carlo should have all of his current untouchables available. After a bit of scare around Terry and Lampard, looks like they will play. I think you can pretty much guess the first eleven. Carlo is a bit conservative when it comes to team selection. If I’ve understood him well enough, I think the team should be – Cech, Terry, Ivanovic, Ferreira, Ashley Cole, Essien, Ramires, Lampard, Anelka, Malouda and Drogba. Yes, I think he will bring in Ferreira because, Ferreira is a more defensive minded defender than Bosingwa. This being an away match, Carlo might go for Ferreira. Also, Bolton do not have any speed merchants that could test Ferreira’s lack of pace. Ferreira is more defensive minded but that should not be interpreted as a ‘better defender’. I’d pick Bosingwa over Ferreira anyday. Yes, Bosingwa is a bit more aggressive in approach but as an overall package, Bosingwa offers more to the team than Ferreira.
I think Ramires and Lampard are sure-starters. I’m still not convinced that Essien deserves a start. I’m okay to start him in an away match where the game could be more open. It’s in the home matches where Essien’s presence, nowadays, doesn’t seem to add much in our struggle to open up packed defences. I’m aware that Essien should play so he can gain some confidence and form, if he does regain them, Josh is never going to get some pitch time.
We have had bright youngsters who, after showing some promise, haven’t managed to blossom further and then have moved on. We should strike it when it’s hot. Josh is hot. Get the best out of him that could develop him as a player. He can be our Lampard by the time he’s 20, if only we start treating him like a first team player and has the same yardstick. Well, there goes my today’s dose of ‘Play Josh’ campaign. Think I’m sounding like a broken record these days.
The front three calls for another important decision. Not often you had so many decisions to make on the first eleven at Chelsea. Such irony that the successful combination of Drogba-Malouda-Anelka is no longer a preferred combination with every one of them unable to confidently claim their place. Drogba has been out of form. Malouda’s work rate has come down. Anelka’s approach doesn’t help much when we’re out of ideas as a team. Sturridge is banging them in but ends up getting 5 mins at the end. We should drop some big names at least to show that they can’t take their places for granted. And it sends out a message to the youngsters that if they play well, they will get picked ahead of the biggies.
This is the squad that we have chosen from the opinion poll in the earlier post:
Petr Cech (42 Votes), Ashley Cole (42 Votes), John Terry (41 Votes), Branislav Ivanovic (41 Votes), Frank Lampard (38 Votes), Jose Bosingwa (37 Votes), Michael Essien (32 Votes), Didier Drogba (31 Votes), Ramires (29 Votes), Daniel Sturridge (28 Votes) and Nicolas Anelka (28 Votes).
Out of the 42 votes, only Petr Cech and Ashley Cole have got a vote from every single voter. Poor young Josh didn’t make it. Until yesterday, Malouda was in and Ramires was not. Today though, Ramires is in and Malouda is in the bench with Josh. Sturridge gets the nod. Let’s see how close we are with Carlo’s picks.
Winning at Reebok won’t be easy though. If you add up Chelsea’s away form and Bolton’s home form, you’ve got reasons to worry. They’ve been beaten only once this season at home – a late goal defeat to Liverpool. They have drawn with Man Utd and they beat Spurs 4-2 at the Reebok. They’re lying only three places below us in the league. So let’s not be under any cloud of over-confidence. They are particularly good at set pieces. That gives us a good excuse to field an ‘all-seniors’ team.
I’m very confident that we’ll win. I know the last match wasn’t quite the reassurance we were looking for but at least the ingredients were there. We pressured them right from the start and were looking dangerous whenever we had the ball. We should have created more and better chances but at least, we weren’t so clueless as we were for a couple of months. The celebration of the goals and the final result would have definitely added something to the slowly improving morale.
Here goes my prediction. Another 2-0 win for Chelsea. Lampard and Drogba (it’s about time chief!).

BC…..you’re making the blog site more complicated…not that i dont like the design but its hard to find where the new posts are…a new visitor to this place would not be too impressed…. i shouldn’t have to go to the archives to find it…good design thou but please give it a touch of blue….KTBFFH!
@ princeakad – WXWAX gave me the exact same feedback. You know what, the 8 thumbnails on the homepage link to the latest 8 posts. You don’t have to go to the archives. All that you need to do is to click the big image on your screen. Just click the smaller thumbnails so the big image also changes. The whole of the big image is a link to a post. Try it out and let me know! Cheers!
After Lee Chung-Yong left for Asian Cup, Bolton’s wining rate has been dropped. So, I am convinced that we can win there tomorrow.
Ugly 1-0 win is also good for me.
Btw, new design for the blog looks great, but I cannot see the author of the post now… Is the problem with me only?
@Chelsung – Well spotted. I missed out on that one. Will fix that asap. By the way, the author of this post is myself. Cheers!
This is the classiest blog design you’ve ever come up with BC. The headers and footers are great. One question however, where is the direct reply tab and the edit function?
As for tomorrows game vs Bolton I think it’s paramount that Lampard get ready. 2-0 win seems just about right.
@ Danablue – You’ve made my day!!! That was exactly what I was looking for. A classy, stylish and professional look to the website (sorry WXWAX – this could be dozenth time that you hear this from me!). As always, some features are in the works. And once again, thank you!
I think Carlo’s right in not giving a start to Josh yet.. He’s just seventeen and a full game might be a little tough for him… Maybe he can be brought on after 45-60min rather than on 80 min… But I think Sturridge should surely make an appearance at least after the 45 min if the attack is still toothless.
@Akshat Kapur – Josh being young should not be a reason not to play him. IF anything, that’s a good reason to play alongside the other big personalities. When Fabregas was 17, he made about 35 starts in the season. Josh is 17 and is probably of the same calibre (at the same age) but doesn’t get as many starts.
@: thanks for the response BC….i get it now…its really cool….now to put the touch of blue….lol…KTBFFH!
Hey guys, although the new design is great, the font size is a real pain. The earlier font size was very comfortable for reading, and font size is precisely the reason I avoid visiting cfc.net Please someone look into this.
LOL. There is no ‘someone’ that can look into this. It’s me. Let me see.
Cheers mate! The access to recent posts in this theme is actually better than in the last one. Glad that you like it. The touch of blue requires some effort as this theme is full of images instead of CSS. Change of color is easy with CSS but with images I would have to spend some time with lots of care. Will surely do. Don’t expect this to be awash in blue, there will be subtle touches of blue.
Goal.com says that Jose Mourinho wants Didier Drogba. Probably, this is a wrong time to run a poll on this. I’m sure most of the votes would be in favour of selling him. I feel that he’s still got another couple of seasons but as he gets older his approach and role should also change. Basically I wouldn’t sell him.
Excellent post, BlueChampion!
I love the insight about Bolton’s speed and Ferriera. I wonder if Bosingwa hasn’t become Carlo’s first choice at right back? Whichever one he chooses, I suspect on current form we’d all prefer to have a third choice.
An away game to Bolton is a true test of whether or not Chelsea are playing with more confidence. As you say, this will be a tough match.
I agree with you, Ancelotti will settle on his most conservative selection. But this may the last week for a while that he does so. After this, the two-a-week schedule begins and that, I think, is when McEachran and Sturridge may get their chances.
Essien? It’s odd that he was playing well before his latest, relatively small, injury, but since he’s been back his passing and his general form have been poor. I wonder why? It seems unanimous that he’s been disappointing. A return to form by him could really be a boost for Chelsea.
I’ll be watching the game on the internet and yelling at everyone here at BCShout!
So…. should Chelsea sell Drogba to Real Madrid?
Personally, I think it’s too late. They’d get less than 5 million for him. Not worth it. Two years ago they could have done an Alex Ferguson and cashed in on a player at the top of his game but with the end in sight.
But that was two years ago. Now he’s 32. He might as well stay at the Bridge and regain his form.
I have been playing with my virtual pro recently in FIFA 11. I am a CDM so I replaced Mikel and it is amazing what that position offers to a team. If the team is poor, look at the CDM, if it is running wonderfully, he obviously deserves a goal. I mean, I was playing Birmingham at home and lost 5-1 (yeah I know), his match rating was 2 (gave away passes, poor tackling, I subbed him off) but then I play Inter Milan with a possesion tactic aimed at being a replica of Arsenal but instead of Fabregas(Lampard) my direct outlet, I used Craigg(Song) as my direct outlet. He broke up attack after attack and the long/short balls he played were just phenomenal. I know this is just a game but think about emulating this tactic. Instead of relying on a 32 year old, why not use a 23 year old who is by far stronger(the strongest on the team next to Essien and Drogba) with vision(see his matches before joining us) and a wide range of passing who barely fails to pass it right(like Xavi maybe). If we started to use our base, instead of our tip(gay lol) we would actually be better. Mikel can shun defenders off better than anyone, (Lampard has a insane tackle but Mikel has that and more), Mikel can pass it almost as good as Lampard can and even better(his age) and with him in the team, we will undoubtedly concede less (Makelele anyone?) Basically all I am is:
Teams have taken advantage of us
They have figured out how to beat us a long time ago, but it can only work if we allow them to (see Fulham vs Jose Mourhino a few years back)
We really don’t need a change of tactics, we just need more confidence (10 consecutive wins) and a few new players.
We need someone challenging our back four (who – Ivanovic have been slacking alot recently). I suggest Santon (RB and LB), Luiz(CB).
We need someone challenging our width. I suggest Sanchez (RW), Hazard (LW and RW), Gervinho (RW).
We need someone to challenge our old man upfront. I suggest Pato or Lukaku in the summer. Lukaku because he will adapt way faster than Pato will. Carlo can get the best out of Pato though. An attacking midfielder like Gourcuff would do nicely as well.
We have slackers who are guaranteed positions, hence they are not giving their all. Bring in more youthful players, drop them, fine them, yell at them, do whatever it takes to get them at their best. Giggs and Beckham were once slacking off and partying together one day, Giggs’ mom told Fergie, who in turn went over with an AK-47 and started firing shots. Giggs and Beckham had two choices, leave Man Utd and fail somewhere else or do what Fergie said and become a star. We know what path they took.
By the way, how do we log in?
this is a terrible outline for the blog!!!!!! we cant now reply or like on the comments. THIS SUCKS!!!!!
Hey Xerxesk! Go easy. Still early days on the theme. Liking stuff will be in soon. Look next to the comment name, you’ll see the comment time followed by ‘QUOTE’ and REPLY’.
Here’s a test of the quote option.
BC u are a wonderful chap mate… U hv improved the site further,Good job mate…Pls Roman sign us a striker to help Drogba and Anelka upfront…………………………………….
Tremayne,
I too love playing as CM or CDM in ‘Become A Legend’ in Winning Eleven 2011. They are great positions to play if you want to understand how the game flows. Truly playing any other role is relatively easier – both in the game as well as in real football I guess. It demands a lot of understanding and attention. After God knows how many months, I spend my first weekend not playing Winning Eleven, thanks to the development work at BlueChampions :)
shawn,
Thanks! I love you guys! I want you to now proudly recommend BlueChampions to your friends. I wasn’t quite able to do that as the website looked a bit underwhelming. Hope it’s of a certain ‘standard’ now. We are the famous CFC and we need a blog that keeps up with the style and swish of Chelsea FC. Here you have it!
xerxesk,
The REPLY feature is a beauty. When I reply to a comment, it starts my comment like I’m addressing the commenter. When you hit the commenter’s name inside the comment, its a link and it takes you to the original comment that you’re replying to. For instance, hit Xerxesk’s name above and you’ll fly to his comment. Cool!
BlueChampion,
Totally untrue. Drogba won’t go..
After many trials, i am finally loving this new look….great! We will win tonight, and i will never forget Zhirkov’s heroics against Bolton…let’s win this for him!
Two player developments, both from The Guardian. Lampard won’t play. And Luiz may be signed in 48 hours. Bad news and good news, as it were.
I doubt the part about Luiz. I thought we didnt want to be held at ransom by Benfica. Instead it’s said that we are after Simon Kjaer, 21-yr old Danish defender at Wolfsburg who comes at half the price of David Luiz.
Danablue – Where are you? What can you tell us about Simon Kjaer?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/chelsea/8277561/Alan-Hansen-Chelsea-owner-Roman-Abramovich-needs-to-rebuild-or-Carlo-Ancelottis-side-will-self-destruct.html
What an insult! Everyone is talking about Pienaar’s decision for Tottenham over Chelsea.. Pienaar knows that Chelsea is too big for him. Only big players can play in BIG club.
I hope and pray that Kevin Davies won’t injure our player(s).
I hope Sturridge starts. But it does look unlikely.isn’t Mikel fit yet?
HiGuys, this is hoping the lads do the business tonight. Anyways it seems to me that the UK press
are hell bent on doing us further damage to our team. the red tops r actually gunning for our
downfall. Look guys, just to get this straight out there, Among the European top teams only Old Red
Nose and the Whiner can go ahead and buy and negotiate players contracts. the rest dont do this.
Barca, Real, Inter, Bayern all have coaches and those that r in charge of negotiating player deals and buying players. What i have noted lately is that , the british press seem to simply go out of their way to
push this idea that only Chelsea FC have this structure. It’s what pertains almost entirely in europe. This structure works because look at Liverpool under Lafa. Now that he’s gone, everyone that comes in says it’s Lafa’s fault cos he bought the players.Yet Lafa is gone. So guys here, dont let
those red tops sow seeds of discontent among our ranks. By the way, dont let anyone tell u guys
we dont need David Luiz. He is the real deal. if we dont get him and use him as JT’s long term replacement. City will. i sincerelyhope the deal goes thru. I still belive in the Blues. we can do it.
COME ON CHELSEA!!!
City will get him.
sorry abt the “City will get him ” part. typo
Lamps is not in the travelling squad to Bolton.. So, Mikel or Josh will replace him now. I wish it is Josh..
This blog looks awesome with this new look. I really liked this change. If you add the features which was available earlier this will really rock. The theme looks really professional.
If lamps is not playing i would like Mikel to play and instead of Rami need Josh.
When Mikel is not playing we loss possession in the midfield and opponent score goals. This is my view. Mikel impoprtance will be felt only if he is not there to defend. Nobody defends like Mikel in midfield.
I think Carlo will start with Mikel today. And nice design! :)
No Lampard today. I hope this means Josh gets a start. Josh and Ramires will make a good midfield pair – pace and flair!
Yeah, no Lampsy…so this is a chance for McEachran to shine!
——————Cech——————
Ivanovic—Terry—Luiz—A.Cole
–Essien—McEachran—Lampard–
–Sanchez—Drogba—Sturridge–
Sub:Turnbull,Bosingwa,Alex,Mikel,Ramires,Malouda,Anelka.
Out: Kalou,Ferreira.
In: Luiz , Sanchez.
Without Lampard we will have problem. Essien is not on his top, Ramires is still adopting … I cannot see anyone to come and fill Lampard’s vacant position against Bolton.
Good news is Tottenham and City both dropped points.
Allan Hansen asks some very important questions today in The Telegraph. He raises issues that I personally have been worried about for the last 2-3 years
“When he (Abramovich) bought Chelsea in 2003, the Russian billionaire changed the face of English football for ever. The positive outcome was that Chelsea enjoyed the most successful period in their history and he was the saviour of the club.”
“But if you are a supporter, you want it to last for 70 or 80 years, not seven or eight. And the big question now is: does Abramovich want to go again and spend another £300 million to get Chelsea back to the top? ”
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/chelsea/8277561/Alan-Hansen-Chelsea-owner-Roman-Abramovich-needs-to-rebuild-or-Carlo-Ancelottis-side-will-self-destruct.html
How committed to Chelsea can we expect Roman to be? Is he planning a life time commitment, does he want out if we fail to qualify for next years CL, does he start moving focus to the Russian national team ?
What do we as fans actually expect from Roman, do we really regard him as a True Blue or just a cynical billionaire wanting an expensive hobby to pass time for a while until something more interesting catches his attention.
Roman is not exactly a man of many words. When was the last time he made a public statement explaining what he wants for Chelsea in the future, what are his plans, is he going to invest in star players or develop a competitive Academy?
To be honest I would rather have an owner showing total commitment, but with less money. That would create a club with less manic trophy hunting, but much more passionate football. Okay we may not win trophies year after year, but at least we know that management and players are at least as committed to the club as the fans.
wxwax,
How do you take out part of a comment that you want to reply to? can you high light the part and then click reply?
BlueChampion,
Simon Kjær would be a great signing for Chelsea. Being Danish myself I might however be a bit biased, but I have been following the progress of Simon Kjær both as an international player and playing in Italy. Every time I’ve seen him he’s been very impressive and showing the composure you want from a great defender.
His time in Germany has not been good for Simon Kjær. McClaren doesn’t want to play him or the competition just slightly better. Seems strange however as Wolfsburgs defence has been very shaky this season.
I believe Kjær is hungry for first team playing time and he is just the player Chelsea is looking for.
Spurs are paying Pienaar about ten grand more per week than Chelsea were prepared to. They didn’t want to pay Pienaar more than Ivanovic, basically.
Just read that Simon Kjær scored the only goal (match winning) for Wolfsburg away against Mainz this weekend (22-1-11), thereby ending an 8 match non-winning streak. The match report also states that Kjær was very instrumental in not conceding a goal.

Here’s a few You Tube clips of Simon Kjær

I like a McEachran-Ramires midfield. Who are the other two? Malouda and Essien? I might be tempted to bench Essien *gasp* and put Obi at defensive mid, if he’s fit enough.
That Telegraph article is written as though UEFA never created Fair Play.
When he says that City don’t have a 10-year plan, he’s right. They’ll be in a world of trouble in 2013 when their wage bill is twice their revenue.
I get the feeling that either the football media hasn’t yet figured out the consequences of Fair Play, or they believe it will somehow develop loopholes to allow teams like City to slip through.
We shall see.
A refreshingly honest comment by Ancelotti: Maybe playing attractive football makes Chelsea vulnerable, but he won’t change their style of play.
A very good story on ESPN Soccernet. http://es.pn/e3WIla
The relevant quotes:
“For Chelsea to win a game, we have to play well, play good football,” said Ancelotti, whose side travel to Bolton on Monday night ten points adrift of United. “We are not able to win a game if we are not able to play well. We played very well last season and when we didn’t play well, we lost the game the same way we have lost them this season.
“Our aim is to improve our football. This is the way to win the game. It is our philosophy. We don’t want to stay back and maybe use the long ball or use the counter-attack. Maybe this is also the reason that if we don’t play well, we are vulnerable.”
True. This is what I was talking about in my post on why Carlo should take bulk of the blame. We do have a certain philosophy and we refuse to play in a different way. Our objective should be to win the match and the playing philosophy is important but secondary. This admission from Carlo is even more worrying. Hope we beat Bolton and get ourselves firmly back in form. Bolton 0-2 Chelsea. C’mon Blues!
Very good win for Chelsea, Nice game by Ramires…
Again I ask, how do you log in, no rudeness intended.
Hey Tremayne! Apologies. Thought I had responded. I’m still in the process of integrating Disqus and I seem to face some issues. Meanwhile, you can login to the blog with this address – http://www.bluechampions.com/wp-login.php
Plus, check your email. I’ve sent something over to you. Cheers!
BlueChampion,
Thank you mate, when I saw it, I swore you made me an admin.
Chelsea agree £25.5m deal for Benfica defender David Luiz
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/chelsea/8279877/Chelsea-agree-25.5m-deal-for-Benfica-defender-David-Luiz.html
DanaBlue,
Really hoping we didn’t sell Matic. We haven’t sold Bruma, van Aanholt, McEchran for sure. We have however sold a 5m rated youth. Please God I beg you don’t let it be Matic.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/jan/24/chelsea-david-luiz-transfer-targets
Maybe Sanchez, Lukaku on the way?
Tremayne Craigg,
It will most likely be Bruma. He has wanted to leave for a while anyway.
Ah, comment system is bugged. No worries though
System malfunction.
I can’t link you to the match report. It’s in the January archives.
