We’re almost halfway through the January transfer window and no action yet by Chelsea.
Given their urgent needs, this is a bit surprising. But you could go mad guessing who they’ll eventually buy. Too many names to remember are being flung out there by the media.
A lot of the club’s hesitation seems to involve money. Thanks to Fair Play, Chelsea would rather not buy anyone, frankly. And if they do, they seem to have a 17-20 million pound cap on it. So we probably won’t see David Luiz in a blue jersey.
Rather than invite insanity by guessing which player is inside that unopened present sitting under Chelsea’s post-Christmas tree, let’s look at the other burning question of the day.
Will 7-goals-in-one-week Daniel Sturridge get a start this Saturday against Blackburn Rovers? And if he does, who sits to make way for him?
First, let’s set the table for this game. It’s home to Blackburn Rovers. Chelsea delivered a workmanlike 2-1 win at Ewood Park at the end of October. It was more or less their last happy Premier League memory for two months. Right after that, the bottom fell out of their season.

Rovers are a mid-table club with four losses in their last six away matches. They’re a club in turmoil since Venky’s fired Sam Allardyce, with notable players like Christopher Samba wanting out. Their results have been a bit of a roller-coaster under new manager Steve Kean. Rovers scored three to beat West Brom away, while conceding three in an away loss to Sunderland. They beat Liverpool at Ewood, but these days, who doesn’t?
So it’s hard to tell which Blackburn will show up at Stamford Bridge.
We do know that a good result is vital to Chelsea. It’s not just that the club are in fifth, outside the Champions League money. Spurs are playing Manchester United at White Hart Lane on Sunday. Since both clubs are ahead of Chelsea, whatever happens will be good news.
Providing Chelsea win, of course.
Which brings us back to our dilemma up front. Sturridge is hot, albeit against lesser opponents as has been his wont in a Chelsea shirt.
Still, don’t seven goals in two matches make him worth a look, even in a desperately important Premier League match?
The obvious man to keep on the bench is *gasp* last year’s Golden Boot, Didier Drogba.
Two reasons. One, Drogba has been off form ever since his bout of malaria. It’s not his fault. But it’s painfully obvious that his touch, his pace, his strength and his endurance aren’t what they used to be.
Two, Sturridge and Anelka seemed to combine really well against Ipswich Town. Again, it was Ipswich, a struggling, manager-less NPower Championship team. But Anelka looked more aggressive and he and Sturridge seemed to play well off of each other’s pace.
So from a football point of view, playing Sturridge seems like a good idea.
But.

Drogba will be furious. He hated sitting the first half against Spurs and came on in the second half like a man possessed. All strikers are prima donnas and Drogba will be sure to pout.
Also, Carlo Ancelotti doesn’t seem to be in a rush to play the lad. Here’s what he said after Sturridge nabbed two in the Cup tie.
“In the future, he’ll have opportunities. We have a lot of games in this period coming up. I think he has to fight with the other strikers, but everyone has to fight. There are a lot of players in competition up front.”
Sounds to me like Ancelotti will rely on his old warhorse Drogba despite Sturridge’s current form and confidence and Drogba’s lack of the same. I guess that’s not a surprise. Most managers in most sports feel more comfortable with the players who’ve performed well for them over time. Most of them are reluctant to play relatively unproven youngsters. After all, it’s their job that’s on the line.
I know some of you would also like to see McEachran and perhaps van Aanholt play as well. But that seems even less likely to happen than Sturridge starting.
So let’s close this out with a small poll. Who would you rather see up top?
(If you’re having trouble voting, go to the home page and vote from the story there. It’s a technical issue that BlueChampion is working on.)

Chelsea must have Malouda, Drogba. Then I would like to see Sturridge to.

I prefer this:
4-3-3 (left to right)
Cech
Van Aanholt – Bruma – Terry – Ivanovic
Lampard – McEchran – Essien
Sturridge – Drogba – Anelka
I want 4-4-2 but that means either Essien or McEchran will have to play on the left because Ramires will be occupying the right and Lampard the centre.
4-1-2-1-2 could work as well but we stopped that because Lampard was not used to it. Remember Carlo only used this because Zidane and Rui Costa forced him to.
We should play
Sturridge Anelka Kalou
then take anelka/kalou off for drogba at 60minutes
It’s interesting that the most likely starting trio is, by far, the least popular choice so far!
i cant vote nor see the vote
I do not think Chelsea should play with three strikers after all.
——————Cech———————–
Bosingwa–Terry–Ivanovich—–Cole
—————-Essien———————-
——Ramires–Lampard–Malouda—–
———-Daniel—Anelka—————–
Those days that 4-3-3 was awesome for Chelsea are gone. 4-3-3 belongs to those that we had Robbe, Duff, Cole ready at the same time … We do not have a CONSISTENT skillfull wing anymore. How many goals we have scoered using our wing players? Most of goals we score come from center.

2/ Read this very same post on the Home page. Go to the end of the post. You’ll see the poll again. If you click on Vote or See Results, the buttons will work.
3/ The Home page doesn’t have the same java conflict that this page does. That’s why the poll works there but not here, for some people.
Thanks for letting us know you had a problem!

Good post Wxwax. My most preferred option wasn’t there :) Malouda-Anelka-Sturridge.
We have similar decisions to make in the midfield too. Like we don’t mind sitting Drogba in the bench, I’d put Essien in his company. I’d start with Lampard, Ramires and Josh. See how Lampard suggested the ‘freshness’ in our team helped us to break the shackles. Drop Drogba and Essien – they are great players all right buy as for this weekend’s match, we have better options.
BC, I think your preferred front line is the first and most popular choice! It’s mine, too.
Oops. I meant to type Kakuta and had ended up typing Malouda. Now corrected. Out of the given options, I’d agree with your choice.
Otherwise, I’d play Kakuta and Sturridge to support Anelka. If we do that, we’ll have tremendous pace upfront. Lampard and Ramires are in ripe form our unleash our pace demons
Ah, Kakuta.
I’m afraid that burned into my mind is the game against Wolves, I think it was, when Lampard played a lovely through ball and Kakuta never made the run. That told me he might not be ready.
I am sure we will win…Lampsy will score again!
You could make a cruel coach :)
kalou is best as a sub
He is a waste when he starts
Chelsea are close to a £21m deal for Benfica centre-back David Luiz, with right-back Paulo Ferreira moving in the opposite direction.
Guys Ferreira is going ………………..Good News(Great News)

Carlo should try this against Blackburn

Bring Malouda For McEachran @ 70 min
Anelka For Kakuta @ 75 min
drogba not only scores but assists as well i will have drogba over studge any day studge will be useful in second half
u cant judge performance of a player vs ipswich to select him in an epl match i think drogba should play from start he offers many thing in defence and on setpieces aswell

hope we can find our confidence back quickly. But the matter of Wilkins still does not let me think easily about the club…
perfecto!! i like ur formation and wish Ancelotti could see and use it!!!
I think that’s an excellent point.
But we’re not in a vacuum. Drogba has been playing a lot, with very little to show for it.
If you’re ever going to try something different, isn’t this the time to do it?
Maybe it will work, maybe it won’t. But can it be any worse than what we have right now? And it might give the club a spark!
Great trade, if it happens.
One man hopes it doesn’t: Ivanovic. He hates playing right back and his agent said he might want leave if he doesn’t play in the middle.
Lampard is so honest. What a strong character he has. Easily my favorite player. He’s all effort and passion (and just a wee bit of skill too!)
I’m not sure his comments will inspire the team, but he shreds any curtain of pretence players, manager or suits might be hiding behind, and he does it without malice. Great man.
The people have spoken!
By a wide majority folks want to give Sturridge a chance, alongside Anelka and Malouda.
That’s my vote, too. I wonder if Ancelotti will dare to do it?
No TV for me, so it’s back to the internet again.
The fact that people think Daniel will start will motivate Drogba to play even better than humanly possible. He grew up on the motto, don’t win, don’t get paid.
Drogba doesn’t like the bench. The fact that Daniel is in good form, against very poor sides, the fact we beat a manager less Ipswich squad, the fact that Roman was watching to see if it really was his or Carlo’s fault will just motivate Didier more. I am amazed at Daniel’s form but history proves he can only score against a weaker side. Blackburn may look weak but so did Liverpool, Sunderland, Birmingham, Newcastle, Everton, Aston Villa and Wolves. If Ivanovic doesn’t want to play RB, sell his whiny ***. I will not allow indiscipline in my squad, you don’t like it, GET THE **** OUT!
Before every game The Guardian announces the squad sheets and projects a starting lineup.
Frequently their starting lineups seem to be a work of fantasy, as they’re often wrong. With that in mind, see here that they think Sturridge plays and Drogba sits. Interesting.

Goodness, The Daily mail (not exactly a bastion of journalistic accuracy) has strong quotes from Ancelotti suggesting he’s ready for change and that Essien might even give way to McEachran!
http://bit.ly/ikdpEi
“Ancelotti said: ‘My job is to choose the best team to play the game. Maybe sometimes there are some players who are not in good condition to play. This does not mean they are not important. I had some fantastic players in the past and they did not play every game. McEachran is ready to start in the Premier League. He has confidence, personality and he is strong. You look at him and think he won’t be strong in the tackle but he was against Ipswich. He doesn’t lack anything.’”
Asked whether he was willing to wield the axe and risk a dressing-room backlash, Ancelotti replied: ‘Yes, why not?’
The Italian is cautious by nature and has always valued experience but admits he is torn. ‘I have doubts up front and in midfield,’ he added.”
The Mail also claims the Pienaar deal fell through because he wanted 70,000 quid a week. That doesn’t surprise me, Chelsea have been cutting wages since the end of last season. I wonder how much David Luiz wants to be paid? :-)
didn’t know it was that serious.. .ivano.. does not want to play RB!!! well let him play CB then . .knowing full well that he probably wont be first choice when alex gets back…. i though he always said he will play anywhere for the team….. and personally i feel very confident when i see his name at RB. So chelsea’s task just got a little harder.. because i think they now need 2 RBs… 9 if when we sell Boss and PF) my pick would be gregory (ajax) and santon!! but why are they going for Luiz… i am a bit confused. it also seems Gregory will come to chelsea if not now.. in the summer (so who would be the back to him.. i say santon).
Hope not. I dont want the dirty Blackburn players to break the little boy’s leg. God speed Joshua!!!
See that’s exactly what I wanted too. Essien and Drogba to make way for Josh and Danny. Josh will manage Blackburn. You can’t plan to protect players in the premier league. Plus, Josh slips through like a fish anyways. But if Josh is playing Ramires will need to play a little deeper.
Trust me, this change is good.
And peeps, I’m back on twitter – http://www.twitter.com/bluechampion – I’ll keep leaving updates on football, premier league and Chelsea. Catch me there (too).

for 1 day i will be spurs fan because i want to see utd beaten and their unbeaten record ended
I don’t know who to root for in the Spurs-ManU game. Spurs, if they win, would go above us. I don’t want us to be out of the top 4. ManU, if they win, will extend their already huge lead over Chelsea, weakening whatever little outside chance Chelsea has of winning the PL.
to Tremayne Craigg
look at how ivanovic play today…full of determination…cant believe a chelsea fan will actually say what you said about him..ivanovic is world classs material
I think you people completely misunderstand me. I never said he doesn’t play well, I said if you don’t want to play at the best position possible for THE CLUB then get the f out. That is all.
