“We won’t lose, we will win” – Those were the words used by Carlo Ancelotti ahead of this match. Let me say that we were never close to even drawing, let alone winning. This was one of the saddest matches I’ve seen Chelsea play. The occasion is big, reaction is due – all we could do was to lost to a team that’s been in the drop zone forever. With half the season over, we have now lost 6 games already. That’s as many as we lost in the whole of last season.
The most intriguing thing about this whole thing is that there are absolutely no excuses for this form. Yes, we had injuries but we’ve always coped with injuries, all teams have to. I won’t call any of our defeats or draws as unlucky. We were thoroughly held or beaten in all these matches. I’ve heard quite a bit about our squad being thin and not so deep. While I agree to that point, I don’t see that to be one of the reasons. All I’d tell you is to look at the starting line-ups of Chelsea and the opponent teams for every single match starting November and then tell me that the teams that started weren’t good enough to beat those opponents.
Something needs to happen. This defeat tonight is the final straw as I see it. I don’t see us coming back into the league anymore. If Man Utd win their game on hand, we’ll be 12 points behind them. The ESPN commentator was screaming at the final whistle ‘what has happened to them’. It’s indeed a great mystery. No one knows the answer. We’ve surprised everyone, including our rivals. We are defending champions, playing in relegation form but trending towards mid-table.
It’s today’s match and not the Aston Villa match that sums up our slump in the past 8 weeks. Conceding a sloppy lead and chase the game in a disjointed fashion with practically no gameplan. This is exactly what’s been happening for 8 weeks now. I don’t remember seeing Chelsea play with such poor teamwork and understanding. And the final ball is all like you have five Kalous on the left side and five SWPs on the right side. Chelsea’s ability to play in the air is a massive strength. I see how much we’ve lost it. I don’t even remember when was the last time I saw a decent cross coming into the box. It’s not that we make bad crosses, it’s just that we make horribly horrendous crosses that are so ridiculous. Now that’s an understatement.
Scolari’s lack of plan B was pretty famous. His team started the season well and early November, his team started losing points and games. Opponents had figured out how to stifle Chelsea and we did not have this thing called ‘Plan-B’. We had learnt one way to play the game and if we couldn’t do it that way, we’d look to the heavens. Early February, Scolari was sacked and the club’s rationale for the decision was below:
Luiz Felipe Scolari has been dismissed as manager of Chelsea Football Club today (Monday) with immediate effect. The Chelsea board would like to place on record our gratitude for his time as manager. Felipe has brought many positives to the club since he joined and we all feel a sense of sadness that our relationship has ended so soon. Unfortunately the results and performances of the team appeared to be deteriorating at a key time in the season. In order to maintain a challenge for the trophies we are still competing for we felt the only option was to make the change now.
You can say it than ever that the results and performances of the team appears to be deteriorating at a key time in the season. The one difference is, Scolari had no history with Chelsea while Ancelotti has. He has just won the double for us. He should not get the same treatment as Scolari got. But we might need admit that issue could be the same. Lack of plan B and an acute inability to get the best out of one’s players.
You can say that the lack of depth in the squad has an impact on the plan as we may not have players to adapt into new formations and tactics. The most worrying thing is, our execution of plan A itself has not been very impressive. We seem to lack that killer instinct that was very very Chelsea. Since Roman (at least), irrespective of the league standing, Chelsea are always a very difficult team to beat. That’s because these men in blue give their best and that’s fundamental to their approach to the game. Now, sadly, that has changed.
This is not your typical premier league season where you see a two-horse race. You find all teams dropping points at unlikely places and very few points separate many teams. This is a season where even if Chelsea had played below their potential, they could have retained the title. What’s happened is that we’ve fallen way below the minimum requirements for a champion incumbent in the premier league.
I don’t want to be in Ancelotti’s shoes now. He talks about how details determined the result and the impact of not finishing those two one-on-ones. Typically, in matches such as these, even if we don’t win, Chelsea should have about 30 shots with a dozen saves from the keeper. We created so less and hence we’re talking about those two chances.
This week I saw the players, they were focused, they worked hard, they stay together and I do not see some problems within the squad. We have a good spirit but this is not enough. We have to stay more in focus on the little details. They decided this match. Two times we were one against one against the goalkeeper but we were not able to. Some ideas were good when we tried to attack but we conceded a goal after a few minutes and it was not the right way to start the game. We wanted to start the game differently but after that the game was very difficult.
On premier league title, he says this.
It is not just one reason, there are a lot of reasons. Now we have to prepare well for our next game and maintain confidence because it is very easy to lose confidence. It is not good our season so far but we can fight for a lot of things and nothing is lost at the moment. It is difficult to come back in the Premier League but we have the FA Cup and we have the Champions League. I have a good relationship with players and the club. The most important thing is to move on.
I don’t know what those ‘lot of reasons’ are. At least, I don’t know the Ancelotti version. Well, we’ve got to a stage we’re saying ‘we can fight for a lot of things’ and also about the domestic cups! Couple of weeks back we said this is worst Chelsea run in a decade. In the last two weeks we’ve drawn one and lost one more. Carlo Ancelotti admitted that he’s lucky to be on the job. I don’t think Roman will sack Carlo. I think no matter where we end up in the table, Carlo would continue to be our manager. Only that I’d be glad if someone from the club recognise the issues in clear terms and talk about the ‘lot of reasons’ and assure of the way forward.
What about us? The supporters and the fans? Well, we need to realise, for now, we’re not in the title race. If we get back into it by a miracle, we can rejoice. For now though, we’re out of it and the sooner we realise it the better. You can set your expectations right. Champions league is more challenging this season; it’s probably more competitive than the premier league. So my expectations for this season is FA Cup. I’ve come to terms with our chances of winning the premier league and champions league.
We’ll continue to watch, follow and support Chelsea FC. I’m very hopeful – not about our titles and trophies this season – but about rebuilding our team and squad. It’s for that reason I think Carlo will be allowed to continue. So I still have that hope. It’s good to have something to hope for. I’ll be hoping for a new Chelsea and I expect to see this new Chelsea by July 2011. I’d have only one wish for this season: we should somehow finish in the top three. Where do you think we will finish?

When I woke up in the morning, the first thing I checked was to find out if Carlo still had the job!
We should try to win the rest of the games. Ramires is coming into the game very well now and so is frank and essien so I see more attacking minded midfielder and kalou should think with his brain and not with his foot. if he had 10 chances.. im sure he’s ready to convert 1 to a goal and one more centre back and that bo singers should just go and sing in his country so that Ivanovic can really play his role. We can still be the champions. blues till i die. http://twitter.com/fordeblues. follow me
True. I like Ramires’ style of play. He is a combination of Essien an Lampard. I’m sure he’s going to only get better.
Kalou and Anelka weren’t going to help. They provide support, at best. When Drogba is playing so poorly, Anelka and Kalou are going to be wasteful.
A proper proper right winger is one of the things we need.
Juan Mata and Neven Subotic have been rumored to join, I sure hope they become a reality. We also need a striker. Anyone that can replace Kalou, he is so wasteful.
If Chelsea keeps Carlo, we will not be among top 4.
Never forget Chelsea cannot sign any big player, if we do not qualify for next CL … Carlo is ruining everything ….
I recorded the game and watched with my wife. at 60th minute, I told my wife, I think Carlo is sacked by now [the game was recorded]
I cannot beleive Carlo is still in job. Bring Zola + Steve Clark
if Chlesea did not qualify for next CL, we should sell Drogba, Anelka, Kalou, and star tworking on young players. I like it more.
This is pathetic……..how many more chances does Kalou have to miss to be replaced by Sturridge……..and for the record we defintely need players for sure…please Carlo don’t give the same shit that we don’t need players if everybody was fit ….the moment it was decided to let go of Ballack,Joe and awesome Carvalho we always needed player and shud hv known it …for God sakes do something about it now atleast.
i sat up whole night watching movies waiting for the game……. couldnt sleep afterwards til sun-up……
Again I say….. It’s as Jose Mourinho never came to Chelsea….. it’s as if no-one cared the fuck anymore…….
It’s as if I was seeing a TEAM of f Tiger Woodses……..after they got whacked with a golf-club of course…
Enough is enough, this is now embarrasing watching them play. Something needed to be done weeks ago when it was obvious there was a major problem when you looked at how they were playing and ignoring the bad results. Personally I don’t think Ancelloti is up to it.
Its sad that we are winding down this path….the path already taken by merseysiders……
Things to notice
1. If DD isn’t firing, there is no hope for us.
2. Essein is losing his goal scoring threats.
3. Anelka and Kalous best are even rare than haley commets.
4. Bosingwa is a shadow of his former self.
5. Its been ages we produced a home grown talent and I think the scene is not going to change for foreseeable future. We need Tixi immediately
6. Our tranfer and academy scouts are far worse than WestHam united.
If I were owner, I would first correct the way things are run before I sack the manager. After all, Carlo is the most ‘obidient’ manager u can find around.
Its like we’re hit by “The Curse of Wilkins”. We fans practically live Chelsea FC, & the past couple of months have been awful.
Just hoping the Ancellotti & the club do something – Buy good-young-epl tested players! Its exactly the same as people have been saying on the blog – “There is no competition for places! Some players just know that they are bound to play no matter what.”
What i dont understand is how come we did’nt buy VDV for 8mil when he was available? And we get inflated prices when we go for players, but clubs like Man U get players for reasonable prices (hernandez for just 6 mil??, carvalho to RM for just 8mil??). Just don’t understand the club’s poilcy.. Sacked wilkins wen there was’nt a need to..
Seems like every now & then the club hits the self-destruct button. Things need to change drastically, squad strengthening needed & much better decisions from the board & club hierarchy or club’s future looks doubtful. CHELSEA FOREVER !!! KTBFFH :C
Shocking isn’t it? Carlo is lost. The players r tired and have grown lazy. They r not running off team mates to create space. That’s why we r not creating chances and teams keep pressing cos our build up is super slow. This has nothing to do with Ray’s departure. That excuse just doesn’t even wash anymore. Until Ivanovic moves to right back we r doomed. That is the weakest part of our game. cos we dont have a right back. Prior to the season opener i wrote on this forum about our right back position and i was villified cos Ferreira is a player who “doesn’t complain abt not playing”. He is the biggest fraud in world football second only to David Beckham. Which team would like to have Ferreira in their side?
We need a schemer and our’s is injured at the moment. We wont get Modric . i follow a lot of world football and only oine player fits that bill. SHINJI KAGAWA of Dortmund. Sometimes i wonder what our scouts do for us. Get paid for absolute nothing.
It’s so annoying what has happened to our team. I blame Carlo. He cant get the boys motivated and the rut started after the carling cup defeat. The same thing happened last season. He just cant seem to b able to lift the team this time round. This “blip” has gone on for too long and something is bound to give. The lads r not fighting for the blue shirt anymore. It’s sad. What has happened to my beloved Chelsea Football Club. The British media are having a field day with us. Only liverpool are doing worse. Shocking absolutely shocking. Our rightback area is a mess. I raised this prior to the season opener and i was slated cos Ferreira “doesn’t complain if he doesn’t paly.”
Now we r finding out. Until Ivanovic plays right back we r doomed.
SACK CARLO PLEASE…..LET HIM JUST GO….ITS ONE THING TO HAVE A BAD SQUAD AND ITS ANOTHER THING TO HAVE A CLUELESS MANAGER…EVEN IF WE GET NEWS PLAYERS…CARLO CANT MANAGE THEM…HE GAVE US THE DOUBLE LAST YEAR BUT WHAT HE HAS DONE THIS YEAR HAS CLEARED HIS RECORED…LET HIM GO AND DIE!!
I JUST CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY ARE EVERYONE BEHIND SACKING CARLO? ON ONE HAND WE SLAM ROMAN FOR BEING IMPATIENT AND NOW WHAT ARE WE BEING? THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO SACK A MANAGER. IT WOULD SPELL DISASTER. ALREADY WE ARE IN A COMPLETE MESS, AND YOU ARE SPEAKING OF SACKING A WORLD CLASS MANAGER(DON’T FORGET THE ENTIRE TEAM IS BEHIND HIM AND EVERYONE’S MORALE WILL GO DOWN EVEN MORE IF HE GOES). SO STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT CA. SACKING HIM WONT CHANGE A THING. AT LEAST HE SHOULD BE GIVEN 100% RIGHT TO BUILD A TEAM OF HIS CHOICE AND ALSO HAVE ASSISTANTS OF HIS CHOICE. THIS IS A SAD TIME OF US BUT WE SHOULD STAY TOGETHER AND HAVE FAITH IN CA. ALL WE CAN DO NOW IS JUST SIT AND HOPE AND GIVE 110% SUPPORT FROM OUR SIDE.
We just need some good news to lift the whole team. Some appointment or new players or something. Roman where is Tzixi ?
We just need some good news to lift the whole team. Some appointment or new players or something. Roman where is Tzixi ?
My thoughts are that carlo has lost it, yes our squad is thin, but that should not be used as an excuse….he was involved in the summer decision to promote youngsters from the academy and yet he is too scared to blood them…absolutely no creativity from the manager in terms of tactics, zero player motivation. The odd loss or draw to a good team is acceptable but with the team we had yesterday against a bottom of the table side?Surely he should go….or the next game i will be moving my lips in sync with his post match comments…”We need not lose confidence..we need to keep working hard, the bad moment is still with us…”
I am glad that MatBLue talked of Shinji Kagawa, the guy is terrific! We need him.
As for the EPL, i have already given up on the title and i would be VERY happy if we can get in the fourth! And as i said it would be so painful to see manure or arse-anal lift the trophy, the best from all probalbe would be citeh! Oh my goat! This is how desperate i currently am…but i as a Chelsea fan is happy to be one and even if Chelsea should do sth. likes Leeds Utd. i would be happy to proudly say that i am Chelsea. Chelsea will prevail but we all need to pray!
As for our first 11 in the next EPL match, i would like this:
…………………….Drogba…………………………
Malouda…………………………………Sturridge
………Lampsy…………….Ramires…………….
…………………….Essien………………………….
Ashley…..Terry……..Ivanovic…..Bosingwa
…………………..Cech…………………………….
As for the Champions League, i would like to try our usual 3:3:4. But i think Carlo can get something if he really doesn’t start Kalou…CARLO PLEASE DON’T START KALOU!
I want Champions League trophy…but if we are to be content with FA Cup, i have no choice…at least we are better than “trophy-restricted-emirates”!!!
WIN OR LOSE, UP THE BLUES! WIN OR LOSE, UP THE BLOUSE!
Got no idea where Chelsea is heading now…..
But I am not giving up hope………
I still believe chelsea will win something this season and qualify for UCL next season……..
I will definitely blame ROMAN for this slump…..
Carlo is a double winning manager but lack of needed players and loss of his faithful Asst. must have made him stop thinking. But being a professional instead of talking pre match dialogues he must rotate and change the current squad that he is having. He is not at all taking risk if his first team(PLAN A) fails NO PLAN B.
Maybe he is doing a revenge to ROMAN behind his own back and players especially kalou, bos and ferreira are with him…
Only one who desperately suffers is WE, The true fans..
Carlo has to go based on the results…it’s that simple…he went along with the blooding of the youngsters..thinning the squad of experience ..not gradually but in 1 year…did he really think a 17/19 was going to be up to it..ridiculous. Getting rid of him now would be just adding fuel to the fire. But when the clean up starts a bit more dead wood can be added.
Yes sir. No ALL CAPS please.
Good argument but no ALL CAPS please!!!
Now i really feel this slump has been due to misunderstanding between the coach and the players. Since the sacking of Ray Wilkins, we´ve hired the brazilian buddy, and neither carlo nor this buddy knows good english.
Shame on each and every person calling for Carlo’s head, its true class cannot be obtained, it is something you are born with, and it’s a sad sight that so many Chelsea fans have no class what so ever. What will sacking Carlo acheive ?? Please explain that to me because I have been following Chelsea since i was 5 and now im 23 but I guess I must be missing a trick somewhere!!
I said that we needed new players but did anyone want to listen. I said that we needed galacticos so that we could dominate and play our opponents off the park.. Now boo hoo look where we are. Now that fella Jaz isn’t so keen on academy youngsters playing this season anymore. If we want to climb the table the solution is simple: Go back to basics.
Maysam we do not need Zola to come and muck up the club. He is not an legendary manager.
Finally, BC I think that your blog is on steroids. lol. cheers!

You are spot on Jaz, but I think it can be explained by the all expanding buy and throw-away culture that permeates all walks of life. Sacking Carlo will achieve absolutely nothing. On the contrary it will worsen the current crisis.
No one seems to be asking a very important question. Roman are YOU bored with Chelsea? I’ve heard that billionaires and the likes have a fairly short attention span and quickly falls out of love with things that are unprofitable.
If Roman is bored, it could explain the lack of investment in the squad. Maybe he is on his way out.
You are just so wrong and very disrespectful. Just by shouting the loudest doesn’t validate you argumentation.
yesterday i wanted Carlo sacked but let’s be honest when we see what is the weakest Chelsea team for a very long time. We need to back him in the transfer market and it looks like it will take around 50mil to get us back to are feared selves again. Too many players aren’t cutting it atm and even though we can all say that Ray Wilkins is being missed severly, we can also see that the current squad isn’t as good as the other 4. However when it comes to management we are in need of a new assistant manager, so Abramovich sort your shit out and make Emmenalo a scout again….wtf was the point cause i would love to hear it.
i think our future as a successful, title-challenging club will depend on the continued involvement(or lack of) of abramovich. if he thinks “well thats it then i’m off”, i’m pretty sure we will go back to the pre-abramovich days; a decent good team.
i really hope that roman will stop messing with the football side of the business. and the fans should collectively stand behind carlo, forget about this season, concentrate on getting a minimum 4th CL qualifying spot, and hopefully build on for the coming seasons.
Something very strange has happened on the official Chelsea web-site. The Thursday interview Oct 28, 2010 with Ray Wilkins (part 1 & 2) has completely vanished. Are the board trying to tamper with history? If so they will not succeed. I will take the liberty to publish the interview in full here on BC in case some of you have missed it or forgotten it.
Please twit the interview far and wide and copy and paste an sample for posterity.
THE THURSDAY INTERVIEW: RAY WILKINS
Posted on: Thu 28 Oct 2010
One October evening over three decades ago a new midfielder appeared on a patchy Stamford Bridge pitch. Now an important staff member, Ray Wilkins is well placed to compare eras…
As Ray Wilkins performs one of his duties during recent games – liaising with match officials to arrange for Josh McEachran to enter the pitch as a substitute, Chelsea’s assistant first team coach can be forgiven for feeling a little nostalgic.
A teenage English midfielder who having come through the junior ranks is being given his introductory Chelsea first-team minutes – it must bring back the memories.
It is 37 years ago this very week that Ray was handed his debut, as a substitute in a home win against Norwich City. Ray, like Josh, was 17 and although the Chelsea team he came in to had finished 12th in the top-flight the previous year as opposed to first, it still had plenty of genuine Chelsea legends on board including Peter Bonetti, John Hollins, Alan Hudson and Peter Osgood.
‘It is an exciting time, coming on to make your debut,’ Ray recollects.’It is not the right word to say I sympathise with Josh but I can remember that nervous situation you go through when you come on.
‘I get thrilled for him and thankfully he does not appear to show too many nerves. It is lovely for everyone when a home-grown guy comes through.
‘That has been the case with all the young lads who have come on this season and last season. The crowds have taken to them straight away. There seems to be an affiliation with the supporter that is lovely to watch.’
Stamford Bridge had no choice but to accept locally-nurtured players soon into Ray’s playing career. As the old guard departed for a variety of reasons, Chelsea’s spending review 1970s’ style determined the relegation-doomed club didn’t have a single penny to use on new players.
Suddenly we had not just a few home-grown players but a home-grown team, and one appreciated all the more for it when they won promotion in 1977.
‘I think the Chelsea crowd has always been encouraging to young players who have come through the system,’ reckons Ray.
‘We had the yo-yo seasons when we went up and down but it was good fun and it was great to go up there on a Saturday afternoon and play with your mates.
‘I didn’t get the feeling I was coming into a team that was coming to an end,’ he adds, looking further back to his 1973 beginnings, ‘because it happened all of a sudden and three or four players went quite quickly.
‘Thirty-seven years ago!’ he exclaims with a smile. ‘I find that scary now. I do have strong memories of my debut. I can see myself coming on for David Webb and I can see myself getting a right going over from Ossie because I gave a ball away. I really enjoyed it.
‘It was an evening kick-off and there wasn’t a stand where the East Stand is. That was still being built.’
Ray’s claim to recall the day well is backed up when challenged to name the team. He rattles it off with just the odd prompt towards a position he is yet to name.
He came on when Webb was carried off on a stretcher with 15 minutes to go of what was an ‘experimental’ Friday night game. The experiment was not rewarded with a big attendance. A crowd of 21,000 turned up and the kick-off time certainly wasn’t appreciated by Norwich who faced with London’s end-of-the-week rush hour, had to climb off their coach and run the last half mile in order for manager Ron Saunders to hand in their teamsheet on time.
Newspaper reports of the game talk of a ‘devastating performance’ from Dave Sexton’s Chelsea side.
Transfer-listed Tommy Baldwin opened the scoring early on from a Peter Houseman cross and Baldwin and Chris Garland combined to set up Steve Kember for a fiercely-hit second before the interval.
Garland then scored his first goal of the season, tapping in after the keeper had parried an Alan Hudson drive to make it 3-0 before Webb’s injury and the substitution.
If a young fan brought up on Premier League-era Chelsea was transported back to 1973, a football version of TV’s Life on Mars if you like, what would be the big differences they would notice about a game at Stamford Bridge?
‘First and foremost they would probably say how on earth is the game being played on that surface!’ decides Ray (pictured below right).
‘It would be fair comment because now days, week in week out, the lads play on a bowling green in comparison to the pitch back then.
‘The good pitches now are a great thing because I think it will stop the progression of synthetic playing surfaces. We can maintain these grass pitches right the way through the season and for the salvation of the guys’ hips, knees and backs, for us not to revert to synthetic is fantastic.
‘The modern artificial pitches do get good write-ups but to keep on playing on them every week, I don’t think it is good for the players. You can get a good foothold in the grass and that has got to be better for the lads.
‘I loved it as a kid when you turned up at the start of the season and the first thing you would see was that beautiful green playing surface, but that is the case week in, week out now and I am really pleased for the players.
‘Some of the lads last year actually had a little moan about our training pitches at one point and it did make me chuckle I’ve got to say, and I did have a little dig at them about it.’
The sand and mud patches of the past couldn’t help but affect the football played but Ray believes the modern day fan travelling back in time would recognise a Chelsea team attempting to play with the panache of the 2010 side.
‘Chelsea back then was always renowned for being a footballing team and with the coaches that I had – Ken Shellito with the youth team, Dario Gradi in the reserves and Dave Sexton as first team manager, always encouraged us to play football.
‘I then went away for a long period and I don’t know how the football was played in that time because I was out the country as well, but we have always tried to be a footballing team when I’ve been a coach here and on those surfaces way back then, even though it was difficult we always gave it a blast.
‘The stadium now of course bears no resemblance to 1973 whatsoever. I was watching some of the old clips the other night on Chelsea TV and it was so different, but it is marvellous now.
‘It is a great atmosphere, the crowd so close to the playing surface, and I think people enjoy going there now. When I was playing we could actually hear and pick out the guy who was giving you stick on a Saturday afternoon and when there were 10,000 or 12,000 in there, it was not a very good atmosphere to play in.’
Better pitches, bigger crowds and a higher-achieving team, as well as touch of nostalgia, Ray might be forgiven a touch of envy when he sees the new young Blues cutting their teeth these days, although he was hardly hampered when breaking through.
In a year and a half of his debut he was permanent Chelsea captain and he became an England international before the age of 20.
He compares emerging as a young player then and now.
‘The lads at the Academy level now are looked after totally differently to the way we were brought up as apprentices but after that it is still the same – you have to progress through the youth team and then through the reserves and then hopefully make that final step into the first team.
‘That will never change but now we try to integrate more of the young players into our training sessions if we possibly can.
‘That is good for them, it gets them in there with the big boys initially and then they know what is required to play in that group.
‘If you give the ball away playing with the first team there is a problem, so don’t give the ball away. They learn that quite quickly when they come over with us!’
In part two of the interview tomorrow, Ray discusses another group who learned quickly – the new breed of young managers currently flying high and who all played for Chelsea with Ray as a coach. He also discusses what is behind Chelsea’s solid start to the current campaign.
RAY WILKINS – PART TWO
Posted on: Fri 29 Oct 2010
Yesterday Ray Wilkins looked back to the time when he emerged onto the Chelsea scene and compared it to the present day. But there is a third part to his Chelsea story – a chapter containing names that are making their own headlines this season beyond their careers as football players.
Ray too had hung up his boots by the time he came back to the club he’d left ten years earlier, on this occasion to assist then manager Gianluca Vialli. He remained until Claudio Ranieri arrived in late 2000.
Looking down the squad lists from the Vialli era, it is notable how many have tried their hand at coaching in some form or other. As recently as yesterday Albert Ferrer joined their ranks when he became the new man in charge at Vitesse Arnhem.
Three names however deserve special mention at this moment in time.A quarter of the way through the Barclays Premier League season, Roberto Di Matteo’s unfancied West Brom are sitting in sixth position.
Two divisions below, Gustavo Poyet’s Brighton are six points clear at the top having been one point above the relegation zone when he took over just under a year ago.
Meanwhile, over in Russia, with four games to spare Dan Petrescu won promotion to the top flight with Kuban Krasnodar, having won the Romanian league championship with his previous club.
‘I did see it in them,’ claims Ray when asked if management potential was detectable in those three during their Chelsea years.
‘They were very bright people and they were very bright footballers.
‘Dan (above right) shouldn’t have been able to play by that stage but he worked his body so well. He would go in an hour before training and stay an hour after training to make sure that he could get his limbs working. He wasn’t in the best physical condition and he had a few back problems but he really was a super professional.
‘It was a great shame what happened to Robbie in St Gallen, the injury that ended his career, but you expect the bright players to become good managers with good ideas.’
Eddie Newton had gone by the time Ray returned to Chelsea but he reveals he bumps into Di Matteo’s assistant at West Brom on numerous occasions.
‘Eddie loves the game and West Brom are doing great. They have done us a right few favours already this year. We didn’t do them one on the opening day of the season but we will have to do them a couple as the season goes along.
‘Gus (above left) for me out of the group is the one I’d have said would make it as a manager because his attitude was almost British, he had this burning desire to succeed which I loved, and he can talk to people.
‘He has a very good eye for the game and it doesn’t surprise me at all he is doing well. At half-time you could always hear Gus in the changing room before you even got back in there and that is what you need when you have got top professional players. They actually sort out the problems before a manager comes back in.
‘All are nice people and they have a humane aspect and that is important as well. They love football, and that is the be all and end all with regards to it.’
It is not only ex-Chelsea personnel who can be pleased with their work at the moment. The current set-up heads into the next two games top of our domestic and Champions League tables.
A former Chelsea manager whose first name is Jose once said he didn’t look upon sides as attacking teams and defensive teams, just balanced teams and unbalanced teams, which if true must make Carlo Ancelotti’s side as balanced as a high-wire walker.
With four more league goals scored than the second-most prolific and only two conceded, all aspects of the team are functioning well. So is the balance spot on currently?
‘We are very fortunate in that we have a terrific playing squad and Carlo has manipulated that squad really well this year,’ says the assistant first team coach.
‘We have had a few problems injury wise but we have been able to maintain a very high level with the work ethic of the players. If we take someone out and put someone in at the moment it doesn’t seem to affect the machine, it still seems to be going in the same direction which is an absolute bonus. All the lads are taking on board what Carlo has to say to them although now we would obviously like to get our injured guys back and give Carlo more of a selection headache.’
Indeed with Jose Bosingwa fit and Alex nearing a return, big choices in defence are already imminent.
‘With Bosingwa back it is like having a new guy, as it was with Michael Essien, and we are coming up to Christmas as well,’ Ray points out. ‘That is a massive period, the squad will rotate and we have to be on our mettle.’
Looking back on events this week, Chelsea were one of only three Premier League teams deemed to contain one of the top 23 players in the world this year, according to the nominating judges for the Ballon d’Or.
It was Didier Drogba in our case but Ray doesn’t accept the lack of English-based players reflects a decline in the league’s standard.
‘I think they have based a lot of it on the World Cup. Didier didn’t take part so much in that but as he scored 37 goals, his club season would have been taken into consideration.
‘We do have an amazing product here in England, no question about it. Everyone is going strong in the Champions League as well – Tottenham in the San Siro with 10 men and getting three goals back is a fair old feat.
‘I think our league is fantastic and long may it continue. I still get excited about a game, like I did 37 years ago, and I will keep doing so.’

Goal.com ‘reports’ that Dzeko has completed his medical at Manchester City. This is a significant signing even from Chelsea’s point of view. Is this the signing that pushes Chelsea to the fourth place. Hope Spurs don’t make any key purchases this January.
Please the almighty lord of football, with your devine knowledge, point out to me where exactly did I say we should not play our academy players ?? Go ahead, im giving you the licence to search threw every one of my comments and dig out the comment where i said im not keen on our academy players. Im sure ur a guy since u have a guy’s name, it’s about time u start actin like one aswell, don’t start rumours and speak out of ur backside.
All i have to say is. When Jose was here he always deployed Essien deep and would surprise the opponents once in a while by having him chargeup front. Also, Lampard was an attacking mid-fielder right behind two strikers. I think Carlo needs to reassess our squad’s potential by coming out with new strategies. With Ray gone i firmly believe he is having a hard time communicate with the squad.
JT is just a hot head and is clueless in terms of attacking. He should just sit back and do his job that is to defend, poor Essien was doing all his work in the last two games. Anyways, Ray was the key to keeping this team delivering with a foreign coach at hand, with him gone we will continue to suffer, we should get Clark back. Bottom line is Communication is the key, i see this in everyday life. No matter how good an engineer, a doctor or a coach you are if you are unable to communicate and get your point across or with your peers its a total waste.
You make a valid point there, buddy. I think we need a coach who can pass on Ancelotti’s ideals and messages to the team in the strongest manner, without dilution. No comments on Emenalo, the man’s…let’s just not go there. Paul Clement seems more of a behind-the-scenes kind of a guy, not very proactive.
Okay, so I’ve been doing a little bit scenario-predicting these past couple of days so I thought I might as well share it with you guys. Here are two polar, contrasting scenarios that could take place when we face Ipswich Town for our first FA Cup game of the season:
Scenario 1:
We believe that 15 minutes of attacking play against Wolves was enough to resurrect our confidence and attacking-style. Carlo believes this will be the season-defining game of our season. JT or Cech or one of the senior players gives a wise-ass comment in the press about ”we still got the quality to roll over a team like Ipswich”. But Roy Keane’s men show determination. They play in a structured manner and manage to nick a goal any time in the first-half. We’re clueless in the first 45 minutes and try and attack in the next half. But our attacks are slow, lack substance and are broken down by a well-organized outfit that applies pressure on us when we’re in possession. 75% ball control leads to nothing. About 3 shots on goal in the whole match, 2 on target, dumping Chelsea out of the FA Cup prematurely and putting more pressure on King Carlo.
Scenario 2:
Carlo realizes his mistake of being predictable in fielding similar starting XI’s game after game, with the same tactics and formation. He decides to go for something different and includes fresh, young lads like Kakuta and Josh McE. in the starting team along with experience of JT, Ivanovic, Essien and the like. We’re initially slow to start but the youth in the team provide our attacks with pace and genuine heart. We create more chances in a game. Make the opposition keeper work. We break through in the 25 minute. We gain confidence and attack with greater intensity, now finding the spaces in the oppositions defence. We score one more. And then another. The confidence is slowly resurfacing and in the end, the score resembles that seen in a cricket match. We progress.
What do you guys think will happen ? Hoping for Scenario 2 myself !
KTBFFH !!
Hmm, I can’t seem to vote or see the poll results.
Tried with two browsers, Firefox and Chrome.
Antone else having problems?
It is amazing, that you people who call yourselves true Chelsea fans, are the same ones posting these ludicrous comments. You all are not Chelsea fans, but Chel$ki fans. You people live off of money, only crave trophies and will do anything to get what they want, even if it means sacking a man who just gave you your FIRST EVER DOUBLE IN YOUR 105 YEAR HISTORY. If really are a Chelsea fan, you will stand by Carlo no matter what. I bet 3/4 of this blog would ditch Chelsea F.C. if we were to come 7th like Liverpool did last year. Those LFC fans ditched Benitez who carried them to a FA Cup final, 2 UCL finals and their best position in the league since 1990. Yes, I did call them patient but I take that back. I really believe true fans are the ones who support League 1 and below sides.
If we really are what we claim we are. There should be no sacking Carlo Ancelotti talk. There should be no sacking Roman talk as I have been doing lately. There should really be a sacking of the whole club talk. The players are not motivated and although WXWAX did state a little kick up the arse does help, I don’t think booing them constantly is going to help. These fans aren’t cheering the club on. I mean look at what Liverpool and Manchester United went through in the 2005 and 1999 UCL finals respectively. Did they boo their clubs when everyone was 100% sure they were going to lose? HELL NO! HELL NO! HELL NO! I damn sure they were singing, cheering and doing everything in their power to carry their club on. AND WHAT DID THEY GET! A ******* UCL TROPHY! HAVE WE EVER GOTTEN ONE! NOOOOOOOOOO! Come on!
We have waited SO LONG but we’d wait FOREVER!
You guys are truly trash if you don’t agree with my statements.
This does lower the intense mood I have but I certainly don’t mean to offend anyone. This is my way of giving this blog a team talk or should I say COME THE **** ON TALK!
i think ur wrong about who ditched rafe… it was the LFC board little bro.
Im not saying sack carlo (managers have done less and got the axe) but look at it, the guy as nothing to work with.. nothing. plus he didnt get the players he wanted.
the best thing to do would to revamp the philosophy. ( give it a barca mold) …. a Rijkaard philosophy(read the part about his view on football philosophy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Rijkaard#Barcelona_.282003.E2.80.932008.29) , a long term philosophy. look at it.. a midfield with essien, lampard and mikel. that it little creativity.. little flair…. i say put too ball playing mids in there (attacking mids) and 1 CDM. for me a new formation and football philosophy is really whats needed. proper scouting. its so easy to fix this situation, its so easy to buy different type of players…. with out even spending 80 mil!!! any player i have suggest and will every suggest is young fifted, skilled technical, strong.
the fact of the matter is we need to get out most of the 30 and over players. do a restructure. theh guy that was at barca Tixki?…. get out those morons on the chelsea board that have been fcuking us over!!
i cant resist so here goes.
sell a. cole (25 mill to madrid) sell kalou, sell anelka.
loan – kakuta, Bruma, Sala
keeper: cech, turnbull, new keeper
RB: ivano, New player (Santon)
CB: Terry, Alex, Rajcovic,New defender (Cahill)
LB: PVA, Santon.
Mids: Essien, mikel, lamaprd, Josh, Matic, New mids (Honda, Piotr Trochowski,Krancjar)
Strikers: Danny, new striker (Barrios, Torres)
best side for a CL match :
————cech—————–
Ivano — Terry- Alex— Santon
————Essien—————
Krancjar—- Lampard
———- Honda———–
——-Barrios —-Torres—-
Subs: Turnbull, Rajcovic, Cahill, Mikel, Trochowski, Matic, Drogba
unbelievable
Carlo has no clue how to fix the problem. A shock might be helpful.
Signing a manager at this time is a mistake .. they should ask Zola to do Chelsea a favor and take control until the end of season, then Roman should look at the market and bring a new manager.
I am not saying I am correct. All my comments might be judgmental because I have never l;iked Carlo ancelotti.
I also cannot vote or see results
CHELSEA RESERVES HAMMER SPURS
The reserves came out on top in a thrilling friendly encounter against Spurs at Cobham on Thursday afternoon, with Daniel Sturridge scoring five times in a 7-3 win.
http://www.chelseafc.com/page/LatestNews/0,,10268~2259895,00.html
At least Some part of Chelsea is WINNING……….That is a Relief for me
Five goals from Sturridge! Good enough for him to get another start. It’s true that he has not really come out with flying colours in his first team performances. To be fair to him, I don’t think we’ve given him enough chances. Getting some pitch time here and there doesnt help; he should hget a run of games. In comparison, Kalou had been getting more games despite not offering so much this season. If Sturridge manages to start about 10 games in succession, he’d certainly be a more useful player.
Ancelloti like all managers have to be judged on results..which means he needs to go but at the end of the season when a decent replacement can be secured..secondly when you look at how they have played it’s pathetic that a team with seasoned internationals have trouble just keeping possession or can’t sustain an attack long enough to get a shot on target..thirdly tactically it’s all the same which makes it easier for any opposition to play against…this team has serious problems with a new manager being step one and the management needing to look at themselves as the succession planning of this team has been awful as major tweaking should have started gradually and well back
>I really believe true fans are the ones who support League 1 and below sides.
You’re like the hipster of football. “Support obscure/small teams or else you aren’t true fans”. That doesn’t make any sense at all. You’re right in saying that most Chelsea fans here only care about trophies, but those kind of people exist in ALL teams. MOST in ManU and Liverpool. 90% ManU fans I know can’t name their first 11.
So this is problem is a side effect of supporting a big team. And choose to ignore those people rather than say stuff like “I really believe true fans are the ones who support League 1 and below sides.”.
Why not switch back to the diamond? I think that would be good. But we do have some problem for the right mid.
Is there any Chelsea species left who do not miss Ray? ;)
Ya Sturridge should be given more chance than kalou…………….
Kalou is a Clueless Shoter………….
He should be loaned to preston or any other championship club…..
i wonder how you guys still believe chelsea would do well in the UCL….its funny cos the team i see now cant even do well in the championship if they’re relegated…this guys cant make fives passes,,cant hold on to possession,,,cant attack,,cant defend,,dont have the intelligence to demolish even a team lounging at the bottom of the table and you think they would do well in the UCL…..i pity y’all…like i said before,, ancelotti is at wits end and he cant do any good for us again….let him go at the end of the season..even if we want to start a new regime,,lets start with a new coach too…..please spare me the talk about him winning the double,,,thats the past..we’re looking to the future.
KTBFFH!!
Maysam I know that you have a soft spot in your heart for Zola. But at this moment in time he is not a good manager. Sure if you want Chelsea to get into a relegation battle then hire Zola on a temp basis. cheers!
I see still Kalou is better than Anelka..
Anelka is misfiring so far.. No real threat comes from him. Kalou has threated the opposite even though he didn’t score much..
He was paramount to communication and spirit. What a bummer Roman made sacking Ray
Once the confidence is back, we will fire on all cylinders again. The FA-Cup Ipswich clash this coming Sunday is ideal to instil some confidence. A new manager will only create more insecurity in the squad.
The Double reduced to just being the past, PrinceAkad? That’s seriously bad attitude. Big clubs builds on past, present and future.
It took five years for fergie before he could do any thing at manure. Keep faith in carlo dude. The manager is not the prob we have, the prob is the team behind the scenes aka director of football, transfer scouts, academy etc. I will welcome a change there. Bring on tzxiki barcelona. Our academy should at least be like westham n manchester if not barcelonas
Are we the only two?
$9 m of course :))
Your comment does not make sense
Today world is a business world … in order to understnad this go listen to Peter Kenyon interview after firing claudio and hiring Jose.
Soccer is harsh … people do not remember what you did, they just see what you are doing. That is why Carlo gets paid $9.
Not in soccer, it is like this every where. People do not judge you but your records and previous results, they jusdge you with your current result It has nothing to do with real fan or fake fan.
The kid is very selfish. Most managers do not like selfish players. That is why Kalou plays.
I agree that Sturudge should get more chances.
Exactly
I wonder if you guys have ever played soccer. You watch our game against Wolves and then you talk about CL here :)) it is soccer, when you play bad, it does not matter in what competition you play, you will play bad (do not talk about miracles like what happened to Liverpool)
Honestly, I do not think Carlo can do anything, Roman gave him so many weeks to fix the problem but we get worse and worse. When a manager play with 4 strikers and 2 midfielders, it means I have no plan, just cross it hopefully somebody kick it in. I ask you a question, How many games we have played with 4 strikers this pas 3 months ?
Carlo has no clue … The only reason Roman will stick to him is Carlo’s reputation for getting the best out of old players. Roman is a smart guy, he sees so many old player in squad and he does not want to spend, he wants to wait until our young layers get mature, so he brought Carlo .. Carlo got the best out of old players in Milan
I do not mind not wining EPL and CL and even not qualifying for CL … as long as we bring a new manager (I hate Carlo even in last season :)) ) and use young players such as Kakuta, McEchran next season. I prefer to see these players rather than watching expensive players … 10 years ago 4 th place was a dream, and 5th was a great result. .. I do not mind getting back to those days as long as I see young players who fight for the club ….
Can you explain why you hate Carlo?
Ok guys it seems my comments were more rage filled than logic filled. I know the comment doesn’t make sense and I can agree to some extent after reading it over. Basically what I wanted to say was just stand by the club and don’t put the blame on someone without research. Like for instance, 90% of this blog is either, change tactics, get Zola/Clarke, fire Carlo, screw the board, bring back Wilkins, sell the players. I mean listen to yourselves, you really sound dumb. I understand you are angered and what a change but what will doing the above prove. One thing I would like to say is don’t worry about winning cups until after we are financially stable.
Look at Barcelona
Try to emulate Rijkaard’s and Txiki’s visions. To build a successful machine that has more than adequate oil to continue running as smooth as possible forever. 50% of us are just looking at winning now. What about the future? What if we do the above in the 1st paragraph. When all of that comes to an end, we will be in another slump. Manchester United, Barcelona and practically 90% of the big clubs know they must build successful youth. Bringing in Txiki will do just that. Frank and Piet wanted a PSV like Chelsea. That ain’t going to work. Unless we can create Johan’s, Frank’s and Marco’s there is no use to create a Holland like youth system. I mean West Ham and Manchester United have by far the best system. Arsenal go abroad and get what they need. We barely spend wads, use them till they are old and complain about something that was bound to happen.
The board didn’t adequately prepare for this and we are know feeling the effects.
It is taste … I do not like his managerial style …
Carlo does not practice his team based on his opponents, he practice his team based on his players … I like managers who design their tactics based on their opponents … somebody like Claudio , Jose Mourinho ….
They called Claudio , The Tinkerman because he always changed his lineup based on the opponent tactic …
I like this type of manager, the one who choose his lineup based on weakness of the opponents not his player. … Carlo picks his player merely based on names … That is exactly why weak teams can beat us when our players do not perform well …
That is exactly why I hate Carlo … even if he wins CL for Chelsea … I thank him but I do not like his managerial style
Video of Daniel Sturridge’s 5 goals in the reserves match.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xljLYRm8HyQ
Fair point. Even I like managers that tactically organise their team based on the opponents’ strengths and weaknesses. Carlo’s method will work when he gets the kind of players that he exactly wants. From that point of view, if Roman wants to retain him, I think Carlo being around is the surest way of rebuilding the squad.
Flash News? Mikel is out until February. For the millionth time, I hope Josh gets some playing time. The kid may not quite be ready but if we don’t play him for this reason, he will never be ready. We will only manage to kill his confidence and sell him to some second grade dutch club. Not again please.
” Carlo Ancelotti admits Chelsea will “destroy” their season if they fail to put an end quickly to their worst run of results for almost 15 years” with the upcoming FA Cup game coming up….mmmm what planet is he on?….I think they have already done it..with a rea;l fight on their hands to get the fourth spot in the league..and on this form the Champions league run will be short lived…just maybe they can beat Ipswich…we hope for some pride
Now this was a performance ! Cool passing and some really cool finishing. I think Sturridge needs a start and by the looks of it, Ancelotti is willing to give it to him for the game against Ipswich. I think Gokhan Tore and Jacob Mellis need some playing time as well, they seem fit enough to be commanding in the midfield area.
KTBFFH !
We have heard it before, the players know they must, Carlo knows he must win but in the end we don’t. We don’t have the quality to press hard 90 minutes to force the other team to make errors. The other team now has a mentality that states, we know we are going to win, because you suck. Wilkins was the one of assisted heavily in motivating the team and now he is gone, we can’t get the 50% more effort out of them like Wilkins and Jose did. Guus and Jose must go over and help Carlo create some new tactics and then show him how team talk a team. I know Jose would be the worst person to have in this moment + he would have been sacked by now. Jose, however, would have been able to use his tactical knowledge, analytic skills and insane team talks to take us out of this moment.
Carlo – more suited in a political field
Jose – more suited for a NFL job
Let the reserve manager, manage the 1st team LOL!
Exactly, Josh is a dynamic central midfield. We don’t need to take a CAM and train him to CDM like we did Mikel. Josh is all 3 CAM, CM and CDM. His excellent range of passing, his excellent vision for his age, his young body that can withstand atleast 60 minutes of pressure, plus he is learning from Lampard. That is what he needs to grow, plus play him more often like how Fergie played his Fledgins. Fergie trusted HIS youth, Carlo doesn’t trust the youth HE ACCEPTED. I truly believe playing a youth in reserves and using him as a sub is not how he develops. Sturridge, Josh, Kakuta, Matic, Bruma, Mancienne, Van Aanholt, Tore, Sala, Borini and Turnbull really deserve more play. Give the struggling 30+ year olds and give play to the up and coming 20 year olds.

THIS A MUST READ! THIS A MUST READ! THIS A MUST READ!
i like this formation ??
–Ivano–Alex—Terry–A.Cole–
—-Ramires–Essien—Lamps—
—Sturridge–Drogba–Malouda—
Sub:Bosingwa,Van Aanholt,JOSH,Kakuta,Kalou,Anelka.
Either buy Honda/Pastore/Hazard/Piotr Trochowski/Krancjar/Ben Arfa or some bad*** attacking midfielder (an english one would be nice, A.Young anyone?) and switch to a 4-1-2-1-2 or just switch to a 4-4-2 right now. Read the post about why 4-3-3 doesn’t work anymore. This is stuff Denver and I have been saying for the longest time.
Carlo manages like Benitez. When his players on form, he gets result but whenever thet are out of form , he does not.
Look what Benitez did when Torres and Gerrard were on form and what happened when they were injured. Same thing with Carlo.
Jose and Claudio were different , they managed as if they are playing chess.
