Really . . who predicted this result? I even heard EurosportNews calling this an ‘upset’. I didn’t mean to think they were there for the taking but surely that result means the bookmakers would have lost more than they would have won this match. Fairplay to them. They came out as deserved winners. They showed more desire and determination than we did.
Quite early in the first half you knew this match wasn’t going our way. We were a bit lethargic and bit too laid back on the ball while they were bubbling around. It wasn’t goof to be easy as we were missing Lampard and Essien in the midfield while Drogba came in at a stage where Pool were happy to sit back and deny us.
To not have Lampard and Essien in the midfield is an unfortunate situation. These two players are very key to Chelsea’s style of play. Both of them are extremely hard working box-to-box midfielders that cover every blade of grass on the pitch. Not just that, they are intelligent players who are quick to see and anticipate the moves and manoeuvres of the opponents and nip them in the bud. This did not happen with Ramires and Zhirkov yesterday. In crucial away matches such as this, this can be quite important.
Torres score two beautiful goals. I don’t want to take anything away from him or Liverpool. On the other hand, I have to say that we made it easy for them. The ball that was served to Torres on both occasions should not have been allowed in the first place. They should have been prevented by some regulation midfield efforts to put pressure and close in gaps. I see a lot of losing patience with Ramires. I’d go easy on him. I think he’s got good passing range. It’s in his reading of the game where he made some mistakes.
In the first half, we gave away the initiative and momentum. Our midfield were not and could not boss the game. Normally, it’s the midfield trio of Lampard, Essien and Mikel that controls and scripts the game for us. With they being absent, Pool could have come with a ploy to hassle our relatively weak midfield. In their defence, it’s not often this trio of Zhirkov, Mikel and Ramires has played together and such a combination against a resurgent Liverpool in front of their new owners at Anfield proved a bit too flimsy.
In the second half, things did change dramatically. Chelsea came back and played with a purpose and started to attack from the word go. In the second half, you could had easily mistaken this for a Stamford bridge match. In the whole match Chelsea had about 65% possession despite the first half where we were second best. That shows how much we dominated in the second half. I’m not the one to quote the figures of possession, shots because they mean nothing if you don’t use them to score goals. I’m just trying to draw positives from an otherwise disappointing match. In the second half we showed what are we capable of. It’s just that we failed to do that in the first half and paid a dear price for it.
It isn’t so bad. We’ve lost to Man City and Liverpool now but have beaten Arsenal. The good thing is we’ve got the two crucial away matches (Anfield and Eastlands) out of our way now. Last season we had to play at Anfield in the penultimate match in our run up to the title. Though we came out comfortable winners then, it was a nervy away match to play so late in the league. At least we don’t have to be playing these teams late in the league when they fighting to get a European slot. I know this us heights of ‘looking on the bright side’ but you can’t deny the fact that we’ve got a couple of tricky away fixtures out of our way and still lead the table.
Congrats to Liverpool; they had their day yesterday. Good luck to them as they swim through the shit with their legs tied. So dies this win bring them back into title race? Stop wasting my time.
I think this match should serve as a useful wake up call for Chelsea and probably mean we should see more of Josh who is a baller that we didn’t have in our midfield yesterday. That also shows Ramires doesn’t unfortunately have too much time to settle in. For the first time this season Chelsea are in catching distance from the chasing pack. Time for Carlo to tighten the screws and show the league who the boss is.
I’ll leave you here. I was wondering what to do in this 4-hour budget flight. I’ve managed to write the whole post in my iPhone 4. Pity there’s no internet connection at 30,000 feet. Wonder how the Gods survive :)

Yep, Liverpool had its day and we had a bad day; this happens in football time of the time inevitably and, moreover, this did not happen with any of current top 4 teams.
Happy to see any of you bloggers has a more forgiving stance on Ramires. Although his current performances are nothing special, I like that guy and believe in him. Moreover, it is never easy to fill in the team like Chelsea as a replacement for Lampsy. But he is a good technician with great touch and accurate long pass. His current performance often reminds me of the one of Malouda in his first season. Ramires is maybe a bit leightweight for Premier League – but this is exactly what used to be said about Malouda at certain era of his career :)
On the other hand – and in spite of my weakness for that player – Brana did not have a good match yesterday. He was at least partly guilty for both goals. At first, he could not decide with Alex at who takes care of Kuyt, who then chipped the ball delicately over JT’s head into the path of Torres. This action had to be stopped then, after Torres got the ball, it was too much even for our captain to prevent him from scoring. The second goal came partly as the result of the ref’s decision to let the play go when our player slipped while we were given an advantage. Nevertheless, this situation caught Brana in bad position, unable to break the pass to Torres and then even to stop his shot. I like our Serb, in fact he is one of our best players in my eyes. But at Liverpool he was indecisive at the back and could not help the team in attack, more often than not just drifting with the ball near the sideline and unable to make a good pass. Jose had to be introduced earlier.
Drogba had to play from the start. He had scored 5 goals in previous 5 games with Liverpool and I really expected him to add more on Sunday. I can understand Carlo’s aim to give Kalou a chance to persuade him that he is worth a place in the starting 11. But the physical play and the overcrowded midfield of Reds allowed Nicky just very little chance to receive a decent pass and Liverpool defenders were well aware of his speed when dealing with aerial passes into empty spaces. After Drogs came, we were able to hold the ball on the opponent’s half, which resulted in several good combinations and decent chances. Unfortunately, we were denied by either Reina (that save against Malouda’s shot at the near post!!!) or the crossbar.
chelsea is a gud team,to me i believe there is a time 4 everythin.will are still a champion.
Ok things did not go as planned. But we can learn from this loss. And prevent losing to Liverpool in the future. I don’t think the ref had a good game. Imagine if that incident between Drogba and Carragher went Drogba’s way. Ah but one can only imagine. But once again as long as we learn from this loss, we can take the positives out of it for the rest of the season.
Karma CW – I read your comment in which you said that you “loathe me”. That’s cheap shots man. C’mon “true-blue”. cheers!
A poor game by Chelsea standards, we were slow and lethargic in the first half, and by the time we settled on the ball and started posing danger, Liverpool were already comfortable with a 2 goal cusion and had 2 banks of 4′s defending the 18 yard box.
The game would be been completely different had Essien, Lamps and Didi played from the word go, I don’t think with the 3 of them fit and present in the team we would of still gone on to lose the match. If anything i see us running out comfortable 2/3-0 winners. But full props to Liverpool, they showed more grit and steel in their play compared to us and El Nino did what he does best, score in a big game with 2 gems of a goal.
The bad thing about the goals he scored yesterday was that, this might push his confidence sky high and he might get Liverpool back into Europa League or even the Champions League, and if that happens would he come to Chelsea next season?? I highly doubt that, i kno Carlo says we dont need him, we have fantastic strikers, but at the end of the day c’mon, if Torres wanted to come to Chelsea, would anyone in the right frame of mind say “no thanks” ? Ofcourse not, i really do hope we see him in our colours come next season.
A bad game but not all doom and gloom, it comes as a wake up call, keep playing like this and we might aswell hand the title away now, but come the end of season if you want to be champions, then the time is now lads, lets pick up our game and go strenght to strenght from here. Howard Webb called a wrong advantage on Liverpool second goal.
It was an obvious foul on Obi Mikel and Howard Webb called advantage [raising his hand in air], then Liverpool players robbed the ball and scored.
Obi possessed the ball, Webb called advantage , in advantage of Liverpool instead of Chelsea.
Liverpool player dives in the box and Howard Webb does not show any yellow card.
Howard Webb called so many fouls without any card. FIFA directly says if a team tries to slow down game by committing small fouls, referees must show yellow card. Howard Webb called so many fouls without causing Liverpool players. Therefore, Liverpool players used those fouls to slow down the game.
I cannot believe why British officials rank him as one of the best in England ; despite his numerous mistakes in EURO games and CL games [Milan Vs Real, Webb's team gifted a goal to Milan. Inzaghi was offside on Milan's second goal].
I strongly believe we did not play well, but refereeing was horrible as well.
I can see a day that foreigner referees start referring in EPL. England does not have good referees. EPL games has improved faster than British referees.
Maysam – Solid points against the current refs in England. It’s funny that you should go onto this point in so much detail because I was watching SkySports this evening and Tony Mowbray was also banging on about the lets say objectivness (biassedness) of the refs.
Tony Mowbray (currenty Stoke City manager) said that refs should be rated on a scale of one to ten. And if they’re poor then they should be relegated to the Championship. Catch his drift.
Anyway where have you been hiding buddy? Its been a good couple of years. Is this the same Maysam born on the 8 September and from Iran? Are you still studying in the U.S.A.? What are you up to? cheers!
@6 ,
likes boyz :)
The ref sucked big time…during the game Gerard and him were smiling…looked to me that there was something cooking so CHelsea will lose the match.
We played without any desire and intent in the first half that even the headless Lucas seemed so brilliant. And when we played with intent in the second half it was too late because we were 0:2 and they wanted to defend and waste time which wanker webb delightfully assisted in all possible ways.
Michael, now you at least seem not like a fan of our rival teams!
i am bitterly disappointed with chelsea performances on the first half. we dont seems to be playing like a champions. its ok not to have possesion but we dont even have control in the first half. but both of the goals were due to brilliance of torres. ramires seems to really lack physiques for english game. things does not look good for him. he would be doing well against a less physical side but liverpool is not one of them. and we do lack creativity from the center. hope kakuta could fill the void one day
Karma CW – I think Liverpool came out with the intent of not wanting to be dictated to, by the brand in which Chelsea plays their football. And then the reds ran out of steam or could’nt keep it up in the second half. I agree with you having played the game myself at an ameteur level, the boys in blue should have been able to counter – attack and score. That’s why I’ve been banging on we need quality forwards to atleast replace Drogba when his not playing.
Californication – I am 100% into woman. cheers!
Didier Drogba is suffering from malaria. cheers!
Didier Drogba is declared fit to play against Fulham. Despite being diagnosed with malaria. cheers!
Leaving Stamford Bridge and moving to Earls Court for a new 60, 80 or even 100k capacity stadium. Could and should that happen?

Thanks,
I do not check this website frequently; however, when I am mad at referees or results, check it to cool down a little bit.
I firmly agree with Tony Mowbray. I watched his interview on Sky Sports website.
I am surprised you remember me. did I mentioned/wrote about myself on this website or you just remembered me? :)
Webb’s bad decisions continued yesterday at White Hart Lane! He deserves to be sent to Mars!

Maysam – You were regularly on this website. So, yes I still remember you!!
Back in the day when Jose Mourinho was still the Chelsea manager we used to chat on a daily basis. I can still remember you saying that you were born on the 8 September and that you were from Iran. Also during the time you were on this blog you said that you were in the U.S.A. studying.
Oh, yes it was Tony Pullis who spoke about the refs. cheers!
I had a feeling there would be trouble once I saw the starting line up.
A midfield of Mikel, Ramires, Zhirkov and Malouda seemed likely to struggle. Zhirkov, despite the occasional flash, really hasn’t been playing all that well. Ramires has been solid but he isn’t a creator or an attacker, not yet anyway. So that midfield was always short on creativity and danger.
As a result Liverpool, who packed the midfield and didn’t give Chelsea any space, bossed the center of the pitch for large portions of the match. Chelsea missed simple passes. Repeatedly. They looked like a bunch of strangers out there. Really poor.
Kalou, subbing for Drogba, had no chemistry with Anelka. An off day. Combine that with Ivanovic in as a safety-first right back and you have a team that was always short on goals.
Against that we had a rampant Liverpool. This was like a Cup Final for them. They were playing out of their minds. Endless energy and finally, at long last, some passion. Torres, loving what has a become a rare international spotlight on a Liverpool game this season, unleashed his considerable talent.
Given all of the above, the final result shouldn’t be much of a surprise.
The game does point out the problems with Chelsea’s squad. Remove Lampard and Essien and this becomes a very average midfield. Anelka and Drogba are in their 30′s and can’t be expected to play every game. (Anelka’s iron man-like availability this season has been remarkable.) Behind them we have a Kalou who, despite a good start to the season and a visibly improved game, has still to prove himself a consistent threat. And Sturridge, who’s frankly a disappointment.
Seems to me that at a minimum, Chelsea are short a creative midfielder who can score and a good striker. And with Terry aging and slow, I’d like a strong center-half as well, please.
I’d like to add that Benayoun is sorely missed.
He’s a speedy and attacking midfielder. Just the sort Chelsea could have used at Anfield.
i didnt watch the match but when i saw the result i was happy but when i read essien got red card i was disapointed he will be missed especially agaist newcastle united but on bright side lampard will be back and i am waiting for essien and lampard midfield reunion for big games in December . i knew that utd would not beat city
we should put the game into bed early kalou should have scored atleast 1or 2 goals
i dont essien tackle was a red card he did not touch demsey
sometihings rotten in the state of Chelsea.

I’m looking forward to the story unfolding. This is serious business, especially taking into account that Carlo regards Ray as his most important asset for creating success.

Didn’t mean to double post, just wanted to correct a spelling mistake.
But since I’m here;
Ancelotti had been effusive in his praise of Wilkins in his autobiography. “Ray is one of those select few, always present, noble in spirit, a real blue-blood, Chelsea flows in his veins,” he wrote. “His heart beats in two languages, and that helped me. Without him, we couldn’t have won a thing, and in particular we would not have started the year at supersonic speed.”
I was just watching SkySports news and they said that Ray Wilkins is no longer at Chelsea. Thanks for the update Danablue. cheers!
Someone at a different blog suggest Ray will become the next West Ham Manager. That kinda makes sense.
17. wxwax,
Valid points!
23. DanaBlue,
I am taken aback, am i dreaming?
