World cup is beautifully poised, isn’t it? My predictions have been fairly decent. I’ve got quite a few things right – France got eliminated in group league stage, Japan got to the second round ahead of Denmark & Cameroon (one of you said you’ll eat your hat if this happened), Chile made it to the second round, Brazil and Argentina are going strong. I’ve got 5 out the final 8 teams right. The teams that failed me were England, Mexico and Italy. But in this topsy-turvy world cup, I thought my predictions have been pretty decent.
I had said that Brazil would beat Netherlands in the quarterfinals and it would be a fairly easy win for Brazil. Also, I had said that Argentina would beat Germany in the quarterfinals. I’m still holding on to those predictions. Anyway, let’s look at all those four quarterfinal matches to make some quick crystal balling:
Brazil vs Netherlands
Nothing’s changed. I still think Brazil would overwhelm Netherlands. Brazil are having a brilliant world cup. They have been nothing short of brilliant. There’s a widespread feeling that this Brazilian does not have flair etc. I don’t buy into that. The way I see it, they are playing brilliant football with some devastating moves. So far, in this world, they have played the best football. What makes them a very strong favourite is the fact that they have a very good and pacy defenders and a top class goal keeper at the back. Also look how they peaking at the right time in this world cup.
Netherlands have done reasonably well but they really have not been tested so far. I have my doubts about this Dutch defence coping with the quality of Brazilian attack. I don’t see them holding the Brazilian attack goalless for 90 minutes. On the other hand, the Brazilian defence can hold the Dutch attack. Arjen Robben certainly would do good to retain his respect for Lucio and Julio Cesar after the champions league final. As far as this quarterfinal match goes, I think this would be an easy win for Brazil. The joy of Brazilian football is back!
Uruguay vs Ghana
This is anybody’s match. Whoever could hold the nerves better could win it. I have a feeling that Uruguay could edge this contest. All through this tournament, I’ve seen that the African teams are bit mentally and psychologically weaker. They seem to drop their shoulders bit too early, become too desperate and deviate from their tactics. Ghana’s goals and chances have come primarily due to individual efforts rather than team work and smart open play. If Uruguay had keep the Ghana striker quiet, that would mean Uruguay winning half the battle.
Diego Forlan is the key. I can’t see him not scoring in this match. It’s for this man, Diego Forlan, I want Uruguay to win this match. He’s given it all for his team. He and Suarez together are very difficult to contain. I would be happy for Michael Essien if Ghana wins but Uruguay do have the edge on an overall basis.
Germany vs Argentina
Germany have been attacking very well. Their midfield and forwards seem to play like they all play for the same club all these years. They can test any defence and Argentina’s defence have been a bit suspect. Germany are certainly finding the net, twice or more. Probably, this is the match where Maradona would repent for not having brought Zanetti and Cambiasso along with him. On the other hand, even Germany’s defence is equally suspect. Look at the Matthew Upson goal to see how poorly Germany can defend in a world cup match.
This Argentina team has been lauded for how their ‘scintillating’ performances and they keep cutting down on the odds after every match. Honestly, I’ve not been too impressed with them. I’m yet to see one brilliant goal from team play from this Argentina team. All their goals have been from set pieces, individual efforts, off sides etc. If they can win the world cup this way, good for them. But I think the way they have played so far indicate that they aren’t so special and they are a bit overrated in this world cup. The way they have played until now, there is not enough width in their style of play and Messi is playing a bit deeper than usual. I think Germany would find this comfortable to negotiate.
Germany may not attack Argentina as freely as they did against the other teams. The Argentina forwards have got pace, skill and power in abundance. This is a cracker of a match. This would be the toughest prediction of this world cup. All said, I do think Argentina would nick this one.
Paraguay vs Spain
As per my original predictions, I expected Spain to get knocked out in the quarterfinal stage. That’s because I thought they would face Italy here. Do I still think Spain would get knocked out to Paraguay? Not really but this is not a walk over for Spain. I know that, like Argentina, Spain are being hailed as a top favourites because of the football they have played in this world cup. That puzzles me. Yes, they have made a billion passes and had a million shots but despite having David Villa and Torres, I think they lack the cutting edge. They cannot forever depend on David Villa. Even that goal against Portugal was an offside goal. No one wants to talk about that because Spain are a critics favourite.
While Spain do have lots of possession, their conversion ratio from possession to goal threats is low. When I say goal threat, I’m talking about real goal threats and not just shots on goal. Paraguay are not rabbits. I’m sure they will give it their best shot but I think Spain would still go through. But I won’t surprised if Paraguay completes the fourth South American slot in the semi finals in this world cup.
So, predictions aside, what do I want to see? I want all South American teams to progress and a classic Brazil vs Argentina final and Brazil as deserving world champions. Enjoy your world cup, it’s not gonna last too long!

Germany will beat argentina3to1 in a hot tempered match where messi will be shown red ,,n brazil is too much 4 any team that don’t score them first
You haven’t a clue son. This must be your first world cup cause its the worst Brazil side i’ve seen and the fact you think they are going to walk over Holland, come on, snap out of your day dream. You live in a fairy land. Lay off the shisha
I think th Ghanians are going to beat the urugua while the Germans will beat the Argentines,Brazil will beat Netherlands while paragua will lost to the spanians giants.
im a big aregentina fan and unlike my fellow blues wudnt mind an espana vs argentina final but we shall see and yes brazil according to me this year round is way overrated and fr tonyt its gonna be the flying dutchmen! GO ORANJE!
Germany beat Argentina, uruguay beat ghana, holland beat selecao, spain beat paraguay
Going off topic here, just to bring in some transfer news, Yaya Toure has signed a 5 year contract at Man City, so that’s Silva and Toure signed in a matter of 3 days. Chelsea on the other hand will confirm the appointment of Yossi Benayoun in the next 24 hours, replacing a few 30 year olds with another 30 year old, seems like we missed a trick somewhere. KTBFFH
Ghana will beat uruguay they have a quality midfield like spain annan, asamoah, boateng and muntari will start today due to andre ayew suspension
Brazil has been the most convincing team at these Fifa South Africa 2010 finals. They certainly aren’t doing anything wrong to hurt there chances of winning the tournament. Spain is the analysts favourites, but they haven’t shown us anything yet that they can go all the way. Argentina has been the most flashy, but look as if they will crumble under any decent pressure the oppostion puts on them. Germany are efficient and Holland is just making up the numbers. There has been alot of good players on show. I still think Chelsea should try and purchase Ozil (Germany). cheers!
Karma CW’s dream woman is at the World Cup. Yes Karma CW its Paris Hilton. She was spotted dinning at Melrose Arch. I hope I can meet her. cheers!
Let’s all meet up at BC Shout for the World Cup Final and warm up for the new season

Second signing of the summer after Thomas Kalas
benayoun signs! :( well i hv to love him now as hes blue! :p
BC, I have had my piece of the hat (Japan) , burp!!! How about yours (Brazil) ;)
I did say that I wont look more for confirming your prediction credibility, if Japan progresses. So, I do believe you are really good in it, just a slight hiccup perhaps.
But Brazil didn’t deserve to go through based on their second half showing. Sneijder was just class. It serves the purpose right as far as Dunga’s conservatism is concerned.
You would be hard-pressed to find a defense that can contain the offensive force of Robben and Sneijder. I hoped this would happen – it makes me happy to see Dani Alves fail.
now that Brazil are out, it looks more likey that Germany will win the WC. Very nice……..:D
Chelsea have signed Yossi Benayoun in a 3 year deal!!!
Spain and Argentina to qualify tomorrow. I’m rooting for Germany now but their back line is shoddy and argentina’s front line boasts some of the worlds highest scorers this season…….
I dont like Benayoun but he will be what Deco wasn’t. With David Silva headed to Man City apparently, I wonder who we could draft in as a winger now. Would also be good for us to start snapping up targets where possible as all of our squad are have been eliminated with their respectful teams so now we should be active. It only leads me to believe our targets play for teams still in the competition.
Apart from when Iniesta scored in over-time against us, the Uruguay v Ghana game must be the cruellest way a football game has ever ended. Unbelievable.
Benayoun??
Who devised the signing? What are they thinking? dammit
What!!! Benayoun signs for Chelsea? It’s not cool man.

Thank you smarty pants. Back in May 2008 did you predict Greece to become European champions? People make assessments and predictions and not everything goes right. Otherwise future would be so boring.
Next time, listen to your mama and show some respect (ha . . am I having a bad day?)
DanaBlue,
I completely agree ! The only event more cruel that the defeat of Ghana last night was the confirmation that we had signed Benayoun on a three-year deal !
The only thing that made me happy yesterday was the Oranje dumping the Brazilians out of the World Cup. BC, your prediction would’ve been accurate (Hell even I wasn’t expecting much from the Dutch) had Brazil not faded into the Abyss in the second-half. After Holland drew back 1-1, they gained a lot of confidence and the Brazilians were left clueless. The only thing they were interesting in doing was to pick up fights with the Dutch, especially Arjen Robben (who I think, did not exaggerate his pain as a shot to the Achilles tendon, however minor, is very painful, trust me !).
Here’s hoping the coaches and scouts and the Chelsea FC Transfers committee learn a bit of math before signing a 30+ player in order to ”decrease the average age of the squad”; picking up a calculator might help :D.
KTBFFH !!
Benny has a role to play in the squad after the loss of Joe and Deco. If the club doesn’t want to pay Silva 160k a week what should they do?
Don’t be so worried that we’ve signed Benayoun, he is a work horse and I’m sure we can make good use of him. Carlo says he especially likes the way he conducts himself on the pitch, and I kinda understand what he means. Every time I’ve seen Benayoun play for loserpool he has shown great commitment to whatever task he was given. That’s not a bad thing in football, something France Italy and England all forgot at the World Cup.
Abramovic, please buy Der Mannschaft, or at least Ozil, Mertesacker and Schweinsteigger

Sorry MATE!! Roman is not ready to invest too much in chelsea these days that is why chelsea is slow in the transfer market. We shld start thinking about life without Roman’s money….
im reali reali disapointed wit chelsea for signing a player like benayoun.dts sucks.i thnk roman is no longer intersted in building to be a super power..wt da hell are they thnkn…is dat wat we call strengthning da squad wit benny…im reali pissed….i expectd chelsea to sign ozil or auguero or silva or navas…cum on chelsea…

I known Shawn, it was written in the midst of the fantastic display of football, Germany showed against Argentina. Despite that I think it is paramount we get hold of Schweinsteigger. That guy is worth a lot of Abramovic’ “dollars”, I should think Sebastian would cost about the same as Roman is paying for a master bedroom on his new yacht. No disrespect intended.

do you become a super power by being forced to pay every player (even average ones) 150k so that every player from then on demands to be paid the same or higher. Benny is a hard worker with a good attitude and provides great cover on the wings or behind the striker/s. Is everyone so quick to forget how we were relying on deco for creativity or how Kalou was our only player playing on the right because Carlo didn’t want to play Joe.
I still hope the fans will be given their marquee a.k.a. Sergio Agüero. The world cup has probably priced us out of moves for Oezil and Schweinsteiger
Damn it feels so good to be right so far. I said Germany would do good in this World Cup, heck I even went as far as to say that Germany is going to win this World Cup. Have I been proven wrong so far. Nope! I really like the look of Ozil. He’s like the energizer bunny, doesn’t seem to get tired. Can run on and on and on, get my point. Why don’t we just pick two or three German players. I would also buy Sebastian Schwienstiger and Lucas Podolski. cheers!
