Chelsea vs Stoke | 25-Apr-2010 @ 16:00 UK

This has been a very special season so far. None of the contenders, Chelsea included, are playing like champions. The most champions would be as always be the team that ends up with maximum points, and if need be, with maximum goal difference. We may not have a champion that has played like champions all season. Not Chelsea, not Manchester United. The manner in which Chelsea succumbed to Wigan, Man City and Tottenham. It’s not about the defeats. It’s not very easy to be an undefeated champion. Chelsea of 04-05 almost achieved but for a 1-0 defeat against Man City due to a penalty (which was converted by Anelka then). In my view, Chelsea’s performance in 04-05 was the most championesque performance since the inception of the premier league. After all, the 95 points that we amassed is still an English record.

If you look at the champions of the premier league this decade, the winners of this season would be right at the bottom. Well, you can attribute this to the improving competition levels in the premier league, the emergence of Man City, stability at Tottenham, Aston Villa’s charge etc. But if you look at the statistics of the winner this decade (below) you’ll see that the champions of this season could be one of the least imposing. For this season 09-10, I’ve just created two scenarios – one for Chelsea and one for Man Utd – assuming both win all the remaining three matches with a net goal difference of 4 goals.

Certainly, Chelsea might have been the best of the lot this season so far and that’s why they’re sitting on top both on points and on goal difference. Chelsea have been outplayed quite a few times this season and you can say that for Man Utd too. Also, Chelsea have been absolutely spectacular on many occasions. It is the contrast in these two statements that is very untypical of champions. We have not been consistent enough. Luckily, in a season where no one wants to win the title, you can afford to be inconsistent because you’re at least more consistent than the other teams. If we had taken our opportunities and had been a bit more consistent, we should have won the title by now. But still, we are the best team in England this season – so far.

To face Stoke City at home is probably one of the better fixtures you can expect at this stage. This season, very disappointingly, we have lost matches even while we were having the momentum on our side. Also, we have come back strongly from every defeat this season. It is for this reason, and that all that we need to do is to win 3 more matches, I think Chelsea would do well and beat Stoke City at home. Also, we happen to meet a side who will no specific ambitions any more for this season than trying to finish as high as possible or attempt a top half finish. They are neither fighting to save relegation nor aspiring for the europa league spot. That doesn’t mean they can be taken lightly but at least they won’t throw bodies like if they have to save their club from relegation.

In a match where long throws would be a threat, we are missing John Terry due to his one-match suspension. To our horror, our poor defending of throw-ins have cost us crucial goals this season. In fact, those throw-ins weren’t half as dangerous as the Delap ones. But we have a big reason to smile. Ashley Cole could make a come back this Sunday after his long injury break during which his wife split with him and there were rumours of Chelsea fining him and his desire to submit a transfer request. In my view, he is the best left back in Europe and we must keep him. It will be great to see him back on the pitch. While I’m thrilled about his return, I must say that our stand-in full backs have just been brilliant in the absence of the regulars. Zhirkov, while he is not Ashley Cole, has been in superb form with his attacking instincts and have played a key role is some of our wins during this period. I still want to see Zhirkov on the pitch, on the left midfield or in the left wing. To have Ashley Cole as the left back, Zhirkov as the left midfielder and Malouda as the left winger, we might have the strongest left side in the country.

Mikel won’t be playing due to a knee problem. With the news of Essien not making a return this season, Ballack have to be at his best in the next three games. You might know that I’m a fan of this man, Michael Ballack. But he has churned out some poor efforts this season and also have given some subtle performances going about his role quietly. Now that he knows that just three wins are between him and his first league champions’ medal since he left Munich, I’m sure he will give his all. Drogba is doubtful for this match. I would hope that we don’t risk him if he is half-fit or something. He is a player who can come in after 70 minutes and still make a telling contribution. And with Anelka as the lone striker, we have done rather well and the truckloads of goals are a testimony to this.

The results of last weekend have really shaken up the Chelsea team. Until last Friday, Chelsea were champions-to-be. What happened last weekend has given Chelsea probably the last wake up call needed this season. We’ve got to a stage where we just need to notch three wins without caring about what other teams do – and we can win the title. No other team is in a position to say this. The only thing that needs to stay in mind until this sunday is, ‘beat Stoke City’. Just forget about anything else. Forget about injuries, resting, suspensions etc – just beat Stoke City. While we don’t need to worry about what Man Utd does, a favourable result for us in their match against Spurs would just be the one last shift of momentum in this title race. I’m sure, in the relative current form, Spurs can certainly get a point or three from Old Trafford. They owe at least this much to a fellow London team especially after upsetting us last weekend. Here’s to a Chelsea win with a 2-0 scoreline. I expect a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.

Ilya Zakharov, the editor-in-chief of the club’s official Russian language website, passed away last week at the age of 27. Our thoughts are with his family. May his soul his rest in peace. A league title win would be most fitting tribute we can pay to this true blue. Here is a stanza from his favourite rock band Queen:

We are the champions – my friends
And we’ll keep on fighting – till the end -
We are the champions -
We are the champions
No time for losers
‘Cause we are the champions – of the world

Let’s give it one big final push for Ilya! Let’s keep the blue flag flying high.

BC well written. I agree with an earlier comment Trueplatinum posted in which he said that every time Chelsea plays a day after Manchester United they put in a bad performance. It’s almost as if the players feel that they have to better, or equal what happened the night before. I hope this does not happen. So with that been said “lets rally around the team.” cheers!

Chelsea lacks big match temprement. I don’t think the team should be watching manpoo play. Its nerve wrecking for the fans who are, so they should be doing team talks or have a sports psycologist address their anxiety issues to the team right now and get focus on the game tomorrow no matter what!

7. DanaBlue - 23rd Apr

Someone here at this site said last week that Spurs would just lay down and die at OT. They kinda just did that.
Now it’s all up to us, as it should be. That is if you wanna be Champions.
So all the key players will have to show up tomorrow, no more pathetic displays. Fight like you mean it and show some heart.

8. Malagantz - 23rd Apr

They were never going to recover even though they equalised that goal was a sympathy gift from the ref. A good team on paper put to the sword away from home. I don’t get how they can be so drastically analed away from home after 2 amazing wins. I’m dreading Anfield more and more now.

To be honest I was expecting Spurs to lose this match. I don’t understand how you guys could possibly think Spurs would beat Manchester United. cheers!

Easy win for Utd lets do our bit and go back top. Liverpool play on Thursday and after two days they play us, we have a whole week to prepare. We beat Utd at old trafford when they had a midweek game, we can surely beat Liverpool as well.

16. TruePlatinum - 23rd Apr

Michael I’m confused, are you a man utd fan or a chelsea fan mate? :s
Anyway, Spurs have beaten Man utd in the past it should be noted and on their run of form, it made sense that they beat third place, beat first place so should then, beat second.

I think Carlo will want someone as physical as malouda to start the game. He won’t want to risk letting early chances slip away. When we are concentrating, we dispatch Stoke quite systematically, it is a trial of strength but we are prefectly capable of coming away with 3 points and a clean sheet as have done against them before.

I think moving Ivanovic to centreback is the most reassuring move to make. We could play someone like Jeffrey Bruma next to Alex and keep some power at rightback but Bruma is a kid, and quite skinny, I dont think he’d fair well against Ricardo Fuller. Tomorrow has to be a 4-3-3 and the ball needs to move quickly along the ground and perfectly through the air. Anelka needs certain kinds of space and angles that Drogba tends not to so the team needs to be aware of that.

Probably a good idea
——————-Cech———————
Ferreira—-Ivanovic—Alex——A.Cole
—————Ballack———————-
——–Lampard——-Zhirkov————
J.Cole——–Anelka————–Malouda

I think Ancelotti may hope to just hold down the entire left side for 90 minutes. If we take half the stoke team out the game (particularly the side Delap plays on) then its gotta be a good thing. The left side is strong enough that every player can tackle, run, beat a player and cross the ball, not to mention score a goal. It makes us a huge headache and With J.Cole, Anelka and Lampard floating around, I don;t think Ballack and Ferreira will need to worry about getting foward very much. Is a risk of injuring a left sided player, but with 3 games to go, it is now or never. I would prefer to swap Ballack Lampard and Zhirkov around a little but its still a good core.

Also, want to quote Ancelotti
“”The only sure thing is that next year there will be five players from the Academy in the squad because they deserve to be.”

So much for an ageing squad then. Kakuta, Stoch, Matic, Bertrand, Van Aanholt, Bruma, Taylor, Hutchinson….just some of the names coming through

I doubt it too. Of all the good glorious chelsea pics, he choses a half naked Beckam as his gravatar. An ex-manu probably? ;)

Regarding your squad, the last time we played A.cole, zhirkov, malouda together, we ended up drawing the match 3-3 against Everton. There was too much confusion on the left flank as to who should overlap, who should sit back. They made a mess of it. I too agree with Anelka starting and Drogba coming from the bench.

Agreed with most of your selection except I would use Deco ahead of Zhirkov. Its a bit overkill on the left in my opinion. I fancy Anelka to take the lead and be on the scoresheet as early as the first half. Joey needs to step up the pace and keep the creativity at max out.

If we cannot win our final 3 games, then we are not worthy champions of England 09/10. C’mon you BLUES!!!!!!

Btw, great post BC… keep it coming! KTBFFH!!!

Was just scratching head, when I thought of penning down my thoughts on the season.

Cmon you chelsea, lets paint the world blue,
make the dream of a supporter true,
as only a Double would soothe the endless pain
that a true blue has suffered 3 years in vain
expecting JT to lift the trophy again.

We have been toppers almost entire season,
have been winning derbies easy and for fun.
But there have been hurdles upon which we have stumbled,
for its human to be erred and be humbled.

The mancs have shown their steel to fight
and made their chances again look bright.
But, now is the time to show the world
we ain’t no chokers who ran dead cold
but blue iron men ambitious and bold.

Pardon for the insult on literature, but this wasn’t an attempt to impress poets. Rather an honest words of encouragement from a true blue.
Keep the blue flag flying high.

24. Lampard and the Blues - 23rd Apr

Its funny how, if consistency were on our side and if we were a bit more fortunate on the injury-list front, we would be hailed as the most prolific, powerful and destructive team in all of Europe; yes, one better than even last years so-called ‘mesmerizing Barcelona’. We were superb against Stoke today, never got into second gear afrer 40 minutes because we did not need to. We just controlled, passed, seized any opportunity (well, barring Malouda’s funny moment:P) we got and snatched a goal. Truly, stuff of Champions.

Liverpool think they’ve sort of gained some last-minute end-of-season momentum by beating Burnley 4-0 at Turf Moor. They might think they have enough to do the same thing to us given our form against Spurs last week. How I’d like to prove them wrong next week at their very own ground.

We get another week off to prepare for that game. This comprehensive victory is just what we need to gain that confidence back and give one final push towards the end that will be sufficient enough to bring the title back to the Bridge.

KTBFFH !!

Malagantz, thank you. I must be the only person on this blog that doesn’t know Chelsea fc’s fixtures. About my loyalty to the blues. 1 down 2 to go !

Liverfool fans are saying they don’t mind having their record beaten by ManUre.
Well they bloody are !
The Liverfool Historical Society is probably going bananas that the No1 ancient bragging right is abt to dissappear !
They are of 2 minds …… subconsciously they are fooked… Anyways they know that they won’t win the EPL next year so why lose ur crown jewel of a record by trying ur utmostest to park the bus in front of Chelsea attack !
Honor and a vague 4th is at stake therefore attack the Reds will and the way to their goal shall be open !

4th is beyond them too… Spurs,ManC and even Villa will make sure of that !
And the midweek game they have against A Madrid will take some major wind outta them too !
Plus NO Torres ……….

So I am not so worried about playing them next week. all our players have a crystal clear vision and know if they squeeze all they are worth out against Liverfool the job is 90% done !
While what have the Reds Fools got to play for next week ?
Nothing really !

You are right, they would surely be tired!

About our match against Stoke:

I still wonder how did Malouda manage to miss that sitter; it instantaneously reminded me of Redknapp’s comment on Darren Bent ;) and did you guys notice that although we were leading the score by a huge margin Malouda wasn’t at all happy until he scored! Is this good for the team? Is it good for himself?

I have always said that Kalou does best coming off from the bench, but I was proved wrong and I am happy!

It was nice to see Drogba and Nico sharing a light moment as Nico got subbed. They played their part although neither could score.

Good luck boys and i am happy that Ashley can play the remaining matches. Lampard is my MoTM.

And finally, my heartfelt prayers and condolences to Ilya Zakharov and his family…RIP.

The injury to MIKEL is a blessing in disguise for chelsea…..I mean putting the incompetent ballack in his position is not a great choice anyways but maybe by putting the overrated german in his postion there is a slight possibility (a very rare one) that he may produce a creative pass for an attacking player to score a goal.

what do i say about this bloke called OBI MIKEL…….dunt know what chelsea saw him in that they signed him…….the ironic part is that we did united a favour by fighting for his signature and taking him away from old trafford……after seeing what he has done at chelsea alex fergusson would be laughfing his ass out and thanking chelsea from taking him to stamford bridge.

At the start of the year ancelotti had said that MIKEL could be the playmaker for chelsea….such a statement surprised the entire footballing world cuz there was no sense in his statement…….I am sure by now ancelotti is aware of mikels capabilities….and I hope when the summer comes he dispatches the annoying and disgusting nigerian to some other part of the globe (preferably africa) a place where he deserves to be…..

Jonjo Shelvy said he would only accept the Liverpool offer which kind of makes sense cause you don’t have to be anywhere near world class to make it into the starting 11 and they are in the worst state financially of the big clubs.

David Villa is a much better player at his peak and it’s obvious. He can do freekicks, shots from outside the box, great footwork and skills in the box, doesn’t have to receive great deliveries to tap in since he can just run in and work his magic. 3rd highest goal scorer this season and not because he plays with a high caliber team like real and barca. He’s 28 which isn’t old.

HOWEVER I only want one big signing and that’s Sergio Agüero.

There is absolutely NO DOUBT..that villa is a spectac player…..but if u see them they tend to be very injury prone when it comes to the phydical nature in the in BPL… look at Riera, or even torres….and dont get me started on Fibregalss :) … anyway… i would’nt wanna see so much money spent on villa ( which would be well over 40 mil)…..i would’nt mind someone who is a level below players like Villa, torres or somethin…but can play the entire season consistently on the same level….

Shelvey was decent, the hype about him is he was only 15 at the start of this season so people expect big things from him but I think 8 goals in 48 games is a bad stat for an attacking midfielder and he will only get ruined going to the premiership now, then again, he will probably have more loan time at Charlton.

Big 7-0 result. Big message and I thank the team for putting on a flawless display at home when critics were trying to write us off again.

Mikel is good, but needs to be up the pitch. I think he is very good at retaining the ball, he is strong, fairly quick and can pass the ball (even if he does it rarely). Ancelotti has been experimenting with the squad, not playing anyone in the ‘anchor’ role. Would be good for Mikel’s development. I think he is alot more attack minded then people think or accept.

If I was putting together a 4-3-3, my striker would have to be big, aggressive, quick, strong………villa and pato are not those things and both would need another striker or someone in the space behind them to help them pass big name defenders. Especially in the premiership, they’d spend half the season injured.

Im quite looking foward to our trip to Anfield and I hope we batter Liverpool. Too long they have clawed away at the other top teams and then flopped so much throughout their season. I’ve said to peeps for so long how poor they are since they robbed ac milan all those years ago. Now 2nd (pushing for 1st) last season is contrast to 6th place hopeful lol. With Torres out, Riera benched etc, we are playing them at the right time. Liverpool are virtually mathematically out of champions league unless they win europa which I’m not sure they can.

I’d also like to add, RA has said the kind of players we are looking to bring in over the summer, will cost £10-£16 million each and that the club would not be bringing in lots of new names as 5 academy players need to be pushed into the first team. It could be a ploy to deflate the market or even to make current players sign cheaper contracts. I think however, he is telling the honest truth and I am supportive of the move.
If Van Aanhlot or Bertrand get moved into the first squad, leftback is a sorted position. Matic can take over from Ballack. Kakuta is an exciting prospect and Sturridge is going to get his minutes, real happy that he scored his first chelsea premiership goal and it was a decent finish. I see space for one or two names maximum and that is only because of Deco, Belletti and injuries we tend to suffer with.

Aguero does more tricks but Villa is by far a better striker. Finishing skills are far above Aguero’s.

aveak, if you are serious, the way I’ve understood the case to be, you have to be found by a professional football club. You can’t send in a cv or a mixtape lol

I support Roman in what he is trying to do 100% but if we miss this one chance to sign Sergio Agüero and he goes to our rivals we will probably regret it……….BIG TIME.

TruePlatinum,
I thoroughly enjoyed your analytical write up, i always enjoy! Can you throw some light on Alan Dzagoev; would he be too fragile for the physical EPL?

Aguero and Villa are equally priced so it is better to buy Aguero who is a lot more younger. I prefer Alan Dzagoev over Pato!

good call.. did remember Alan Dzagoev… he is pretty good!… with skills

Today, Barcelona – Inter. Let me inform u people, that barcelona have started this huge campaign for this game, asking fans to support their team like they never did before. They had fabricated t-shirts with the word “remuntada”, which is to say comeback, and there is also going to be a special choreography invloving all 90,000 seats in the camp nou.

Now, the part that PISSED me off, is the fact that barcelona have also made a Video, to motivate their players for the match. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6A32HB2KJA
They have used last year’s chelsea match at stamford bridge to show that the remuntada is possible. WTF?
Last years match was robbed, unfair, unjust, they know they were very lucky and they complained about the refree against inter, after they lost , completely forgetting what had happened last year against chelsea. And now they make this video showing how they won us! when it was clear that they advanced because of freaking refree!
What a load of HIPROCRITS …

im sorry, i just got pissed off after watching this video

hehe..come on guys….dont you understand…. Barca can “remuntada” only if the ref turns out to be like overbo…. the fans themselves believe tht the only way they can “remuntada” is thru the contribution of the ref…
