Birmingham vs Chelsea | 26-Dec-09 @ 12:45 UK
Blame it on my being busy with other things in life. I know I’ve not been spending too much time on the BlueChampions space. There was once a time when I use to not only blog the pre-match, post-match and non-match opinions but also actively participate in the comments section. I’d like to do all that. I will. For now, let’s live in the comfort that I’m fully aware that I’m not spending enough time here and that I’m pissing off some of you because of that. Because I’m aware, I’ll do something about it, very soon.
Away at Birmingham tomorrow. There are a few things that are threatening Chelsea’s party tomorrow. Firstly, Birmingham are on an unbeaten run and they get to play at home tomorrow. They can be a tough opposition. If they are above Liverpool in the league table on Christmas day, you need to take them seriously. Secondly, we might play in our dark away kit. See, I’ve got nothing against this away kit. In fact, I really like it. It’s just that not having won even a single match wearing that kit could have us psyched out as soon as our players walk out on the pitch. If we play in our dark away kit, let tomorrow be the day we notch our first win in that lovely kit.
Chelsea have not yet recovered from their slight dip in form. For about half a dozen matches, we’ve been shaky, unsure and either very lucky or very unlucky. What we need at this stage is a very resounding win like a 3-0 or 4-0 where Petr Cech is hardly seen. For this expectation, it would be ideal for us to play against a team in disarray at Stamford Bridge. But we get to a play a team that’s high on confidence and also play at their own home stadium. Anyway, let’s be honest. With due respect, it’s Birmingham and not Barcelona.
We would be missing Anelka, Essien and Deco. I hope we continue with the 4-4-2 diamond instead of Carlo’s favourite away formation 4-3-2-1. Playing 4-4-2 would accommodate Sturridge. I’m never a harsh critic of Kalou. But even I think that Sturridge must get ahead of Kalou in team selection. Sturridge’s performance in the 45 mins that he got in the last match was very good. I thought he had the strength and pace that Kalou’s badly missing. With whatever I have seen of Sturridge, he also seems to be more of a team player than Kalou and also certainly has a better final ball than the Ivorian. If you didn’t know already, Ancelotti has said that Sturridge would get a start tomorrow.
I’m all too excited for Sturridge. The one observation I have about him is that he looks way too pensive. Like how Anelka was until last season. I know he is very focused and determined and all that but c’mon, you can loosen up a bit. Sport a smile, get the fans on your side, score the goal and have them sing your name.
The midfield should have Lampard and Mikel certainly. Joe Cole has not been very impressive but I’d give him another chance because he’s back from a long injury and it’s never that easy to join back your team and play in the most difficult league in Europe. I think he’s been okay. A goal or a fantasic assist would lift his spirits and form. Why don’t we play Matic and/or Kakuta too depending on the match situation? Both are very decent young players. There were superbly in control, they knew what they were doing and appeared very matured in their approach to the game. Same was the case with Borini. Let’s see if we get to see Sturridge, Kakuta, Matic and Borini at different points of time. Anyway, it appears all these players will have to play a big role until the end of first week of February.
We can still make this a decent month if we win this game and the game against Fulham, where Sturridge and Borini could start. If we beat Birmingham and Fulham, we’d have got 11 points out of possible 18 in this month, which is quite good in these circumstances and general level of consistency of top teams in this season. We must win tomorrow. At this moment, I don’t want to remind you that 13 of the 15 goals that we conceded were from set pieces. Ouch, I just did that, didn’t I? Chelsea are back to winning ways tomorrow. 2-0 for us.
I’d like to leave you with this lovely quote from Ashley Cole in his interview in the club wesbite:
If we play well we can beat anyone but we have not shown the fight and the determination that you should start the game with. That is what wins you games, it doesn’t matter how good you are otherwise, and we have to get back to that.
Sure we will. And yes, merry christmas folks! Have fun and enjoy!
Hello all, just for disussion…watching the developements at ManC and Liverpool, aren’t we lucky to have an onwer like Roman…he has wholeheartedly financed the club, takes deep interest in buying of quality players, wants good football, his dedication to football is also proved by his commitments towards Russian football which is ample proof that his sole aim is not to make profit unlike those yankies at pool or Sheikhs at ManC…he is at Chelsea for his love of footie…and most importantly, he does all this without ever trying to be in limelight…shouldn’t we Chelsea fans be grateful to Roman, and feel lucky to have him…and if possible, to have a nice article on him…
Aren’t all of our Africans unavailable for this match? If so, I’d opt for the following:
4-3-3
Cech; Ivanovic, Terry, Alex, A Cole; Ballack, Belletti, Lampard; J Cole, Sturridge, Zhirkov
Subs: Hilario, Carvalho, Ferreira, Malouda, Matic, Kakuta, Borini

Absolutely. I’ve thought of this as well. It’s great to have an owner that cares for the club and loves the sport. Of course, he has his very standards and expectations but I’d do as well, if I have to my hard earned millions. Yes, we should have an article dedicated for him. Thinking of it already. Thanks.

No mate. Birmingham match would be the last before they depart for the African Nations Cup. Ancelotti had actually said that Drogba and Sturridge would start tomorrow. I might think that starting Sturridge is like springing a surprise. Ancelotti also had the option of keeping the opposition guessing about the team instead of knowing much in advance that a certain Sturridge would start.
i don’t want to lose another threee ooints to the black jersey. pls wear white or soring me a suprisra
i wanted only to say that zhirkov is a very good player and he should play tomorrow against Birmingham
ashley cole and zhirkov can play in the same eleven ffs
yes…..Chelsea must win this afternoon….like I said before..Chelsea must improve passing tempo and accuracy on this game before the ball robbed by the opponent players…..Mikel must read te game and do not make any foul in back quarter area of Chelsea defence….I think in the past 1-2 match Chelsea have dealt with set pieces problems..may it will be long continue….
and one thing….if Chelsea get a freekick…ffs i want to see other players to take it. If Lampard take a freekick, it’s always smash the wall or over the cross bar….just I want to see Ballack/Malouda/Alex to take the frrekick more often….
hopefully Danny will get a good game..and score goals…
does anybody know why Kakuta do not made the team squads….
i love the way blues are moving on..we should not fidget about the african nation cup.. i suggest, kakuta should be given a place in chelsea squad
I would also love to see Zhirkov start in the midfield. Maybe kakuta and matic come in as sub.
I’m sorry but Carlo must go !

no way dont panic as yet we are still top just need 1 win and that kickstart we want stability what can players they did everything right just were unlucky no team would have beaten bir not even manu
Disjointed, unorganized, un-spirited,abject NO COJONES!
NO BALLS ! NO ! PLAY ! What the fuck has he done to this team ?
We should be 10 points ahead in the league and what the FUCK we’re turning into Liverpool !
Yeah, its quite frustrating,we had everything setup to get a huge nice lead before the African Nations Cup but we blew it.Blew it big time.Hope we start winning from now.
We havent even scored a goal in open play since ages( I dont knw abt Anelka’s goal against Portsmouth ,didnt see that ),.This is a major worry.I think now Ancelloti is lost on what to do.We need to improve a lot.
w t f?………..we played very poorly
the thing i hate abt ancelotti is he is getting predictable than bentez…and he is even saying his formations and players tostart with….this is where mourinho is cunning………..
Guys, I think complacency is showing its ugly presence amongst our team members. We aren’t fast enough in midfield, our passing is sloppy and we’re not creative at all. If you notice throughout the game, rather than move quickly and bombard the Birmingham D with crosses and shots, our players were moving the ball back to the centre of midfield for Mikel or Belletti to slow down the tempo. It’s getting far too predictable for me.
We lack creativity. Joey is just not hitting top form at the moment and who can blame him, he’s not getting enough time in the middle. I think he can be awesome if he were to play in tandem with another creative, swift midfielder (Think of Kranjkar + Modric at Tottenham). I think we should go for someone in January, one player should suffice.
Also, our play is too narrow. We depend on Ashley to run up and down that left-hand flank all the time. If we’re gonna play Malouda or Zhirkov, I suggest we play them as out and out wingers who make runs from the side and bombard the D with crosses. I think even Joey should be reverted back to his winger position. I want Carlo to surprise everyone with a more wide formation against Fulham.
Cheer up guys, we’re still in the lead. We just need to fix a few minor problems here and there. Hail the Blues !!
KTBFFH !!
JOSEHOLIDAY IS RIGTH
SCOLARI=CARLO we have the same 42 points than the las season
relax guys no need to panic its better to have wobble now then april we will bounce back soon 6 match winning run drogs to play on monday i bet we will win on monday .as long we are top dont worry
Please work this equation. If Chelsea-Essien=Scholari Sacking, then what will Chelsea-Essien in 2009 be? I can’t help missing Essien in our line up.
[quote comment="79855"]JOSEHOLIDAY IS RIGTH

but lot of differnce we are unbeaten at home and won vs big 4 u have to be patient
bir is good team they will beat manu on jan 9 no panic no panic 100000000000000 times we just need 1win to kickstart every side has a wobble league has changed and carlo is new. hiddink did well coincided with essien return strurridge did ok
kalou as a sub is good replace malouda with zhirkov we need 1 or 2 fresh legs scolari has 42 from 19 ok but only 49 from 24 we have 4 games to go win all it will be 54 fans dont be impatient i dont want a new manager now relax plenty of time we can win with 87 pts league has been such .even jose would found it hard again be cool hope 4 win vs fulham we just need more luck there diff we did wobble in ucl last seson but not his year.no comparisons effort intent was there defending of set
pieces we are in drivers seat who says hull manu is a fore grown conclusion plus manu play bir arsnl in jan
“Our manager did break some good news in the post-match press conference by informing the awaiting journalists that both Salomon Kalou and Didier Drogba will not depart for the African Cup of Nations until 29 December
That means they’ll both be available for the Fulham game on Monday, although Ancelotti also admitted Nicolas Anelka will not play against our London neighbours.
‘We asked the national team and the coach agreed with us.”

: )
At times i reli do begin to question just how many people here are genuine fans of football and chelsea and understand the game and not just follow what goal.com has to say about chelsea’s poor performances. If i remember correctly a month ago everyone was saying how carlo is a genious and how we completely raped Arsenal. Now a month later, a few bad performances and certain individuals are like Carlo has to go (lol to the max here). What exactly is that going to achieve?? we get a manager for 6 months, change the system, get the players to adapt to the system, hit a wobble (which happens with the greatest of teams – liverpool, utd a good example this season) and the course of action as suggested by some fans here, axe the manager LOL. Then pay that manager some £10M for terminating his contract, get a new manager, cause unstability at the club once more, give the new manager 6 months and then axe him aswell. I wonder what if Man Utd and Arsenal had the same approach, they would probably be sitting next to us aswell having won only 3 premier league titles because certain fans jus wanna jump off the wagon the minute one tyre comes off loose.
Im sorry to say this but certain fans need to grow some brain and not just look at this, 1 season at a time, think of the future instead, sack an expereinced 50 year old manager and lets get hiddink who can manage at 3/4 the most considering he’s turning 64 (very clever i must say). Every team is going to hit a wobble, it happening to Liverpool (the most successful english club ever) its happening to Man Utd (the most successful club of the decade) it happening to Milan, Real Madrid, even Barca (kings of europe). I guess all of them should sack their managers and try and hit a bullseye in the dark by finding a manger who will come and wiggle his magic wand (no homo) and everything will be fine (i guess that how some of you reli do think is what happens in football). Fact is football is a game of patience, we have a poor form at the moment but its not going to last forever, we will come out of this stronger, so rather then cockin your gun and asking for the manager’s head every 6 months (hoping alice in wonderland will send Jose Mourinho back to chelsea) learn to be supportive of your team and back the manager, success will follow without a doubt. Thank You!!
@22 jaz i agree exactly thats what i am about to stress as well just be patient believe in the team back the team we are still front runner now our lead will be lower we might work more harder may be strurridge and co will give fresh legs and help us win anelka and studge in jan can be great me patient one good win and season is back on track how can u ask manager who is 5 pts clear to be sacked and manager who is 15 pts off at title race out of champs is still manager at pool .have common sense give him time .maybe we need new players not new manager ballack and deco are too old.relax cool ancelloti is experienced different not scolari who wasnt a european club manager sir alex didnt win anythingin first 3 yrs and look he is still there success takes time no knee jerk reaction give him full season minimum look manu is not as strong as not last year and arsenal are of course unpredictable tomm they will draw.every team has a bad month i think carlo will make sure we will be better in jan look essien is most imp player in our team with dynamism he provides he will back in feb .1 win good away from normalcy cheers be patient guys we played ok we won headers we looked ok just finishing was missing.title is won in april or may not in dec .it has not been lost so be calm everyone i will reply back to all who want our manger out so dont make do that.team that has quality will succeed
losing to team in around u is more important to win league and we have done that no need to panic as long are top in feb we will win epl people say we will drop more pts in jan but ithink manu will drop more because they more tough fixture list with bir away and arsnl away

May be Carlo didn’t hit a bullseye today, but you surely did.
Well, how many of those calling for Carlo’s head believe we were poor today?
I for myself thought Birmingham were bloody lucky. Here is something you people should have a look at.
Shots (on Goal) 14(2) 30(7)
Fouls 6 17
Corner Kicks 7 11
Offsides 4 3
Time of Possession 37% 63%
Yellow Cards 1 1
Red Cards 0 1
Saves 7 2
yup friends the right column is ours and I can bet for sure no team in that top 4 could manage that sort of marauding play against an in form team at their own backyard. This I believe more than justifies my (obvious) claim. We could have easily won it by a 4 or 3 goal margin had it not been for Hart.
I believe the bigger talking point should have been the substitutions. Why were Lampard and Mikel substituted leaving Malouda and Beletti on the pitch. Although the subs played well, but I believe the duo were wrongly subbed.
I know I am making some self contradicting points, but these mistakes do happen, don’t they? Show some faith on Carlo, he will take us out of this mess.
KTBFFH and so shall Carlo. Err… not the birmingham one.
Easy guys…yes It was disappointed result against Brum ….it seems the ‘Diamond’ is not shining and spinning when we miss Essien and Anelka……look the main point of this formation is the ‘’Pirlo side’’ as in AC Milan…in Chelsea now only Essien who can take this role well….
About anyone who think that Carlo is similar with Scolari, I think not….yes about the point is similar with last season….but the difference is…although Chelsea played not well, the team still managed good statistics (sums of shoot on target, corner kick, or even shoot off target)…
And the main difference with Scolari is the whole player passion in the team….every player in Chelsea now all look fit..Drogba in good mood and keep fight until the match end…
Hopefully it only bad moment for us…..yes we need more creativity source in the team….maybe in the next game Chelsea must try Zhirkov on the left side of the diamond…Lampsie on the right side…Ballack on the base….Joe Cole on the tip….
————————-Cech————————
Ivanovic——–Terry———Carvalho——Cole
————————Belletti———————-
—-Joe Cole——————————Zhirkov–
————————Lampard———————
———–Sturridge————-Drogba———–
It’s good to hear that Drogba will be featuring tomorrow though I don’t want to see Kalou starting. Kalou plays way better when he comes off the bench. Zhirkov finally will have to make his debut with Malouda’s red card.
Prediction – 2-1 or 1-1 draw!
Aha … Me follow what Goal.com says and need to grow a brain …
I rushed to ther computer terminal after watching last night’s game… and if you just noticed there was no charge t the opposition’s goal,no siege … actually no nothing at all… Chelsea is built to win titles… not to finish games like that and imitate Liverfool…. If Carlo and some can’t handle a few poor fans saying their minds and calling to notice the crumbling of a team … so be it …. Cos remember Roman won’t tolerate it long … whether the manager is a yes man or not !
omg..didn’t get to watc the 2nd half…disappointing result…drop pts…but i believe a win in ournex game will start a winning streak…the players will be moe confident.carlo need to play the right players at the right time…hope to c more of zhirkov,kakuta..maybe in jan,we realli need a buy
WATCH OUT! THE PROSECUTOR IS COMING TO BLUECHAMPIONS.COM.ANALYSES LIKE NEVER SEEN BEFORE: WHY HAS THE ABSENSE OF ONE PLAYER CAUSED SO MUCH FOR CHELSEA? ESSIEN IS THE KEY TO OUR PROBLEMS,THE KEY TO THE PROBLEMS OF MANY TEAMS IN EUROPE.
i must say the results are pretty discouraging.however i believe if we be at the top of the table come feb,the title is ours.all big 4 teams are gonna drop points 4 sure.hope carlo’s claims that we ain’t buying is so as not to look so desprate hence hike our purchases’ prices.otherwise we relly need to buy as ballack and lampard are ageing and our ban is looming.lastly i think zhikorv needs more games as he is the player who would probably break down defences individually in times of need.
by the way is it possible 4 us to switch to 4-3-3 as we have pretty good wingers?
