Disappointed? Yes. Surprised? No. My predictions didn’t go well but there was one thing where I was spot on. I knew that we were going to concede in set pieces. We managed that twice. Two very poorly defended set pieces have undermined an otherwise good performance for a post-international-break match at Villa Park. I wouldn’t say we looked tired but certainly Villa looked more fresh and determined.
If you exclude those set pieces aside, this was a match that Chelsea dominated – be it in possession or in terms of chances created, shots on goal etc. But that’s not to take anything away from Aston Villa. They dominated where it mattered – the goals scored column. Let this not go down an a poor performance from Chelsea or something. We played really well. We had the creativity and improvisation, we were great to watch and we created loads of chances. If only we had defended better . . .
With some extra effort, Michael Essien could have prevented both the goals. For the first goal, Carvalho was at fault but Essien could have stopped the goal. For the second goal, it was clearly Essien who was simply watching the ball without making an attempt of any sort to stop the goal. He wasn’t shoving or body checking or even jumping. He just failed to mark his man. That was pretty sad to see. There was something common about Essien’s performance and that of Chelsea. Essien had a good match otherwise but just lost it during these set pieces.
Earlier, Drogba score a very smart long range goal. For the casual eyes, it might look like a lucky strike. If you’ve been following Drogba since the pre-season friendlies, you’d realise that this is something he has added to his repertoire. The shot is not about luck, it’s about surprising the goalie and doing that with perfection. He’s done that now a few times this season. Very good goal.
From a league table point of view, it’s a bad weekend as Man Utd and Arsenal win their matches. Liverpool lost to Sunderland but their results shouldn’t matter anymore. We’ve knocked them out of the premier league as early as October this time. How Rafael Benitez is still holding on to his job is beyond me. Except for a lucky champions league win and an even more lucky FA Cup win, he’s got nothing to show. From a Chelsea perspective, I wish he stays for another decade in charge of Liverpool.
Sometimes, I realise that this blog really helps me in reacting to such defeats. When the match was over, I was very gutted but as I started writing this blog, I’m feeling lighter. It’s one of those matches where we did well but committed two mistakes and were punished. It’s a long season but we have a bunch of tough away fixtures to come. Excellent performance in the next 8 weeks could put us all alone at the top while the rest can fight for the spoils. I think we’ll come back like this match never happened and lead the table again soon. Cheer up!

What a load of rubbish in defence today. Two away loses in a row. Manure scrapped through and are now 1 point ahead in table. Arse can push us to 3rd by winning later this weekend and City can also overtake us with 2 games in hand. Spurs are breathing down our neck. How the fuck can this weekend get any worse.
It all started very well with the best round of golf I have played all season. Going 5.4 down in handicap for 1 round, that’s pretty good.
Had a nice lunch, we scored the first goal and I thought by Monday we will be 5 points clear at the top of the table. BUT things were not really turning out that way were they?
Good post BC, apart from I strongly disagree who to blame for the 2 villa goals. The first one was blatantly clear a Lampard mistake. He did not jump high enough to clear the corner, instead it became a head on for a free goal. Lampard is not playing very well at the moment. He did however make 2 fantastic passes late in the game.
The second goal was a more and more frequent Cech blunder.
The fact that villa have made more than half their goals from set-pieces, makes our defending today even more pathetic. You would think we would have prepared ourselves!!!!!
this fvckin shit suckes. bouth anelka and deco could finish the game. the corners looked like back in scolari time when we almost allways conseeded goals on set pieces. we need mikel or balack to controle midfield more in this game. whats up with lamps, he needs to focus more he barely gets chanses and when he does he just waste them.

The reason why I blamed Essien/Carvalho instead of Cech/Lampard is that, Essien and Carvalho absolutely failed to mark the goal scorer. Both were really free headers. I wouldn’t blame Lampard for the bad clearance. Those things happen in the box. Where was the man-marking inside the box? What was Essien exactly doing? If you can watch the replays, just observe Michael Essien. See what he does or does not.
BC its a bit like asking how long is a piece of string. When you see the replay you can also see that Lampard clearly blames himself, just lip-read him. As for Cech, from my point of view it’s happening again and again (also when he plays for his national team). A goalkeeper who is supposed to be among the best in the world needs to show more authority.
The 2-1 goal… I’m quite sure that it wasn’t Essien who were assigned to watch out for Collins, but Drogba.
(btw: thanx for a very nice blog, been following it for almost two years but never left a comment until now)
Next away game is against Bolton. Another team were we don’t have a good history .. Many draw against that team.. We lost the season last time during crucial Nov – dec time.. don’t wnat to repeat that.
can´t blame the players, they were obviously tired. ALL OF THEM just came back from the internationals and may be got only few hours rest………sometimes having good players is shit when world cup is nearing……….
and this is why i am a ballack fan. If he was there today, we wouldn´t have conceded from set pieces. plus ballack adds momentum and defends better than Essien at set-pieces. Ballack is inbetween CDM and CAM, and bit different than CM :)
I must say BC I earlier believed that your posts made sense however over time they get lamer by the minute, maybe its the indian wheather or you trying to copy material from the tabloids. If you disect the first goal it is clear that Martin O’Neil palyed a fast one on Chelsea by using a thing called as a dummy. What he actually did was use the two players in front of the keeper to indicate the area where the cross was to deliver which encouraged Cech to miss judge the cross. It is very very clear that as soon as Cech committed to the cross he knew that he had made a blunder. If you want to blame Essien its all good however Collin is the only player that comes from outside the keepers smaller box and if convienently released by Anelka who just raises a little hand to inform he is not marking Collins anymore. Essien if you look closely is marking the player on beyond the far post. Also both the posts are covered and Cech should keep his ground as the goal went into the hole that he opened up by charging at the ball. So its Cech and Anelka clearly, I dont know how indepth you do your research mate, please ensure your opinons are accurate as they influence a lot of people and can defame a player more than needed. Still also on the subject of Essien the whole formation makes him practically useless as he is such an attacking player and should not be in a defensive role also Lampard is ineffective as he is more central now rather than a floating midfielder which is no Deco’s job, hmmmmmm……eyebrows mate!!! anyways thats another debate. If you look at the Drogba goal it was a pure goal keeping error and he even went to Friedel to kinda give a pat to say ‘Hard luck mate!!!’…. I think everything overall was great but we cant finish it, sorry story since last season, Clinical striker BC you play a lot FIFA you should know what that means cause of the field nothing like that exists, it just a finisher, for the sake of football please stop using FIFA 10 or 09 or watever version as the guide to football knowledge go see the games too and the venues to judge football on the field that on the screen. Villa park is a crazy place to be at in your face kinda venue :) Also its not that simple on the first goal too, Ricky is to blame but he played the off side trap which was foiled by a loitering Drogba and Cole moving inwards from his post, if he had sticked there it was directed towards him. Cech palyed what he is supposed to do on the first goal, Cheers mate lets not make football so simple as coaches are masters in playing to the weakness of the opponents and we are weak in set pieces. I hope you will research in future for your posts mate!!! see ya Blue world is the only world!!!! SUMMARY: International fatigue got to us, we have arguably too many international players!!! and poor Cech was sad from his recent qualifying failures….Cheers
On another note:
have any of you seen 3rd goal from Inter match? Can easily be picked as the goal of the year.
@ BC

Amazingly in correct mate!!! Carvalho is playing the offisde if you see the line when the goal is in !!! its drogs and cole!!! who are out of position doing Jack!!
What has happened to the old Chelsea defense? I remember the days when I knew we would secure a victory once we scored the first goal. I suppose those days were the JM days but we can still do a much better job than our current form. We’re moving the ball well, but when we have these defensive lapses (whether it’s Lamps to blame, Cech to blame, Essien to blame, whof*ckinever), it completely changes the game and our fluid movement of the ball means absolutely nothing. I find it strange that my heart nervously pumps each time we concede a corner kick or free kick near the box.
Although I think John Terry sometimes whines or argues too much, I liked that he was furious after the 2nd conceded goal. Shows how passionate he is and how much pride he takes in the team’s defense.
On a brighter note, good to see Joey Cole out there. It was kinda weird to see him out there, actually. I wonder if he even knew what to do.
My 3 cents about yesterday
1. Tighten up at the back and tis long season left yet
2. Manure weren’t that convincing either, first goal was a laugh
3. Liverfool are wearing Pittsburg Steelers uniforms without helmets and henceforth to be called Liverfool Cheaters
And actually Villa wee super too !

My writings are never researched. They are never meant to be in-depth insights. I just write what I would have discussed with my football loving friends. If you’re looking for researched material, this is certainly not the site for you. This being a blog and what goes here being a bunch of my opinions is a well-known thing around here. Sorry to have disappointed you there.
I have less concern about O Neill’s dummy on us. What I was talking about was what did we do in response. In corners, the keeper has a thankless job and he needs to be really supported by his men in the box. Cech probably could have done something wrong but Michael Essien did nothing. He didn’t do something wrong, he just didn’t do anything except watching the ball go into the net. Trying to play offside in that situation is one of the dumbest things to do, if you know your game.
As far as Drogba’s goal is concerned I have no two views about it. It was a fantastically taken goal. The whole thing was about surprising the goalkeeper. When you surprise the goalkeeper, you induce him to make an error. What’s the thing about ‘clinical striker’? I don’t think I said that for that goal.
I know about Villa park mate. If you had read the preview post as well (which you apparently have not), you’d have known what my expectations from Villa park. I don’t know about you but I play fifa only for fun and not for knowledge for two reasons: (i) fifa games suck (ii) I play them for some casual fun. Plus, it’s not a good idea to pick on other’s football knowledge this way, especially when you’re not good at sarcasm.
Let me say it again. This is a blog. These are my opinions. These are not researched. These are the views of a Chelsea fan. If you’re looking for so-called in-depth analysis and research, check BBC or such sites. I’m not a football writer, I’m a football fan who happens to write. Cheers!
Lampard was at fault. By missing that fairly basic clearing header he let his defenders down. He knows it more than most it showed on his face he was disgusted with himself – but we move on.
All this talk about who was marking who epitomizes the problem. Nobody took marking responsibility our set piece defense looked very casual, which is why JT lost the plot – no one was marking. I’d spend the next week man-on-man marking set pieces, its just not good enough. What are other teams be thinking now???
Now onto the bigger pictures stuff. What was Ancelotti thinking at 2-1? Besides putting on the bungling giant Ivanonich – the Russian ” Robert Huth” (remember him?) – for Bosa, nothing else changed, Why Ivanovich?? Beletti would seem like a far more appropriate choice given the score line? And then to take of Malouda (our best player on the field) for J.Cole? Why not take Deco off who gave the ball away, missed a sitter, failed to put the ball across from corners and generally played shit???
Lampard has dipped in form simply because he has become more peripheral to the system, I don’t like this diamond midfield at all, we should play wider Anelka likes to roam so why not a 4-3-3 with Anelka Left Drogba Centre- J.Cole/Kalou right. Then you can have Lamps/Ballack/Essien in the middle an be done with it….
Blah…we lost to Villa …how can we expect to Win the Champions Leauge and get done by Wigan and Villa??

Very fair comment. Ancelotti didn’t react and respond quick enough but I don’t think I’ll hold him responsible. It’s not that things were not happening for us. It’s not that we were not able to create chances or something. We just could have finished better.
Hi BC, agree with your comments about Ancelotti not making the changes. I was on match report duty yesterday over at our blog and wrote as much there. Leaving it until 10 minutes before bring on Joe was too late as Malouda had begun to fade at that point. Malouda overall seems to have fallen away from the end of season form under Guus Hiddink. Also I think Villa deserve some credit, O’ Neill is forging a tidy unit there, and I commented on the fact that I’m amazed we didn’t go for Milner, Young or Agbonlahor during the close season. What was Arnesen up to when Newcastle let Milner go? Because he’s been a great prospect for quite a few years now and could anyone argue that any of those Villa players wouldn’t look good wearing Chelsea Blue?
It’s not a disaster yet but Ancelotti needs to be as brave as Jose was when needing to change the game. Some have alluded to his greatness in the world game, but trophy wise he is some way behind TSO. Its hard to argue that Mourinho didn’t know how to change games because when he did make subs, more often than not it worked.
This year may be the last chance for some of these players to win the league, none are getting younger and the bar we raised so successfully has been jumped by others whereas we haven’t moved on. Can anyone claim this squad is as good as the title winning ones? Thought not……
One more thing….several times last year we had the chance to either go top, or consolidate our position at the top, but each time we choked. Have we become a team of chokers? I hope not but can’t help wonder if penalty defeats in the CL have had a lasting psychological impact on some of our players.
@BC
You have clear opinons in this blog not views, but opinons. So I just feel that your blog has very strong presence amongst others and are read by fans of other teams too, you have a responsibility to put facts first and analyze more the seemingly more than what is being done now, for the sake of the Blues!!!

I want to be myself. This is just a blog by whatever name you call it. To be honest with you I care less about facts. I’m a Chelsea fan. Being a fan is all about emotions and passion; and very less about facts and statistics. Probably, I need to put a disclaimer kind of thing . . .
Why can’t we revert to / start with 4-3-3 and mix it up with diamond and even do a 4-4-2 sometimes ?
With Malouda, Zirhov and J Cole ( and that youngster Sturridge : lotsa strikers start as wingers ) coming in, why couldn’t the above be possible with CFC ?
Get Sinclair back too and it may well be possible :
From the not-so-wise and football-retarded

This is by far the worst opinion bluechampions has offered so far.Michael essien had nothing to do with the goals we conceeded, and i think besides drogba, essien was the best on the pitch. We paid dearly because of our bad defending as a team and i dont think its a wise and intelligent act to pin our downfall on essien.this is the pooress analyses by bluechampions, and i think all true blues should ignore.
disanto scored feeling nice 4 him
Ok guys I’ve just read from y’all and many views are interesting however i feel surprised that nobody ‘s pointed out BOSINGWA sub par performance He POORLY conceded 2 CORNER KICKS that turned into brilliant goals for the opponents ;got MANHANDLED on his side !!! Ancelloti shoulda benched him earlier I mean you can’t get manhandled like that when you’ re a Chelsea starter: BALLACK is definitely missed the guy picks up the slack, commits tactical or hard fouls when it’s needed psychs out opponents when it’s needed (remember Evra during the Community shield game ) Don’t get me wrong we don’t need no lame Gattuso but some performances are Un-Chelsea !!!! International break notwithstanding I think that if Guus was in charge they woulda shifted to a good ol’ 4-5-1 and secure da win 4-4-2 diamond is ok when you can dominate on the sides but speedsters Ashley Young and Agbonlahor were too much of a load for the fatigued Bosingwa and Ashley Cole whom I did not recognize yesterday . Besides Aston Villa ‘s defense ain’t no joke it was a sliding tackle festival on the pitch yesterday .however I jus’ hope that we gon’ knock off Manure from their temporary pedestal as soon as possible
On another note :
Wussup with guys hatin’ on FIFA 10 is this a trend ? It reminds of Ice Cube’s moniker in the early ’90s :” the … u love to hate” Blue rehman and Blue Champion I’m eager to read your views on this game but with unbiased and constructive criticism frankly you both sound like some ol’ frustrated noobs Every week end i watch tons of soccer games mostly Premier League and to me Pro Evo ain’t up to par when it comes to mirroring the intensity of the game on the pitch except for the GK’s intelligence at times but 360 dribble is plain f…. dope!!!!
Daniel Agyie…Daniel Agyie…Daniel Agyie…Daniel Agyie…Daniel Agyie…Daniel Agyie…Daniel Agyie… Daniel Agyie…Daniel

Atletico Madrid lost 3-0 today to osasuna.. Is it a coincidence , that we played roma last year during the same time and they were playing miserable also and our away game was their turning point..
We played bad, very bad!
Deco’s corners suck, suck hard! And he even gave foolish passes, most of the time.
One thing which really sucked was why had we have to wear the third kit when Villa’s home kit is not at all blue? We should have been fine had we just wore blue socks! I don’t know whose shitty idea it was to wear this ill-fated kit. Next time we wear this kit again, i ain’t gonna have any hope to bag points. The designer and the decision maker to wear this kit over our home kit and white kit are shit heads!
I just couldn’t watch the match without emptying glasses and glasses of beer…i was pissed like a newt, thanks to boring Chelsea!

I hate this worthless diamond, it isn’t doing any good to us…if CA continues to use this diamond despite the fact that it isn’t working for us, i wouldn’t mind to see his back pretty soon!
4:3:3, as JoseHoliday said suits us aptly!
DENNIS,
It is not necessary that you have to like what BC wrote, nor is it that we all agree to what he says thru’ his writings. But we love to read his thoughts, his perspective as much as we want to share ours. And he is giving us this chance by running a beautiful website, and we love it dearly. We read BC’s blogs because we know that his blood is blue and that he squeezes time for himself from his work.
I respect your decision for blaming him for having failed to do research and include facts in his writings, but i fear that you paint your own colour with your language. You can give him suggestions and constructive criticism but asking him not to write anything henceforth is not really a gentleman’s action. If you are not happy with what he wrote and shared then why the hell did you waste your time in reading it? For an instance, if i know that something is not worth reading, i stop it there and keep time for some useful things. I doubt if you have not read solely to criticise than to praise! “If you can’t say anything good, better don’t say anything at all”.
We love BC’s writings, factual or not and we will continue to read it and comment. But if you find it “not good enough”, then go searching for better places instead of trying to de-motivate someone who had won lots of blue hearts!
Chelsea is the best and anything related to Chelsea is best as well!
Dennis

Yeah, i also nurture the same hope like you, and it is indeed this clinging onto the hope that life becomes a lot easier. I was so disappointed last Saturday that i drowned myself flat in the ocean of beer…i am still so sad. And manure never runs short of luck. But on a brighter side, i am hopeful that Zhirkov and Joey will be match-fit soon! And it would really benefit us if we leave flawed deco on the bench, sole to warm it, not to come in as a substitute. He is destroying everything for us…worthless midget!
@Dennis,
If you don´t agree to what BC has to say, then you can argue politely. If you can´t, fuck off, this place isn´t for you. Everyone has right to put his opinion, and you ain´t great tactcian either. We discuss matters politely in this blog. So plz respect the sentiments of people when you react. Such reactions only show how immature you are.
Alex should be returned as soon as protection is not functioning well .. And I can say for
Ballack is a great player as her being absent Chelsea Ballack is suffering not functioning as midfield and protection .. after my opinion the proper formation is:
———— Cech ————
–Bosingwa-TERRY-ALEX-A.Cole–
-Essien–Ballack–Lampard-Malouda-
————Anelka-Drogba———–
pls, pals, dont be too intrugenous and dont forget i am also a fan of blues. i did not say he should not write or something like that, but with his argueable comments with BLUREHMAN, he said, he do not need researches to write post and by his own doing, he write what he likes to write and this is the reason why i did not understand. i like BC posts very much but i was argue about what he said. remember, you cant write a post in your own way for people to read. and as for IWASMISSINGJOSE, your mentality is foolishing you but you do not know and i suggest you see a medical assittance to solve your problem otherwise, you are in really deep deep big hole trouble.
Who the hell is DENNIS ?He is just an angry guy.
Our gameplay sucks until Lampard Sucks.Thats why we needed another goal scoring mid player.
@Dennis,
and it seems your condition is already beyond repair…..grow up mate.

I like to think my perspective is accurate. Everybody on this site is entitled to share their views, yes some of them are blatantly stupid, but the idea of the blog is that everyone can share their ideas. If there is a difference in opinion, then talk it out, the worst that could possibly happen is both parties gain a better understanding of the other.
Firstly, im with DanaBlue, BluRehman and Mozza. Essien may not have challenged the goals, but then again, who was positioned to mark the goal scorers? Not essien but rather carvahlo and drogba, and the poor communication from cech only adds to it. I like Cech, but he is one of those guys who will find fault with others before himself, I blame the goals on his ppor communication. Yes Lampard mistimed a header, but even though he is 6’0 tall, lampard is not a jumper, he is not a defender, we were simply utilising his height if anything so it isn’t fair to say his mis timed jump directly allowed the goal as if the defenders in the box and the goalkeeper were doing their jobs properly, there would not of been a goal for Villa.
Secondly Mozza, just to be pedantic, Branislav Ivanovic is Serbian. I really do wonder why we keep putting him at right back when he clearly is not comfortable. After the Liverpool 4-4 draw last month, im too scared to see him at centreback. I think we are better off starting alex when he comes back. His style is more inspiring than Carvahlo’s and I have always favoured him since I saw him playing against arsenal for psv eindhoven. Im starting to feel Carvahlo is not comitted, he wanted away over the summer and I do think we should of let him go.
Last point to make. Yes the majority of our players were tired from travelling for international matches and aston villa weren’t. However, we are a fitter team, our players are more skilled, we shouldn’t be conceeding cheap goals. We were lucky to get the first goal. It wasn’t the best shot from Drogba but was a huge cockup for Friedel, he had time to shift across, the shot was not powerful, he mistimed and misaimed his jump. We had more than enough time to finish the game off, but our players looked lazy. Drogba, can’t really fault him for the second chance, he could have attempted to beat the defender and slot it in, but after the barca games, im not surprised he smashed it first time. Anelka and Deco both put in very lazy attempts at goal, nothing comes easy and they should know that, no excuse for the toe pokes they made.
Very disappointing result, but remember, we won the title with 5 losses before so we shouldn’t panic right now
Well so I learnt something Ivanovich is Serbian thanks TP. Totally agree with your post but I think people are a little soft on Lampard, and heck I love the guy but just because your an attacking midfielder dosn’t mean you don’t have defensive duties and one of them is “CLEAR THE F* BALL”.
All that aside, I was just venting from a frustrating loss to villa, all points have been made I totally agree Carvahlo looked disintrested and Bosingwa was having a shocker, hacking everyone – the problem here was speed Abognahor and Ashley young – man those guys ran all day and it showed up that our squad isn’t getting any younger.
Really appreciated these posts gave me a different perspective and something to mull over. Keep it up.
Nice post again BC,
I, like all of us, was gutted at the end of the game. The two goals we gave them were absolutley atrocious. But having said that i can think of a few postives that came out of the game. One was our amazing passing inside the final third, especially in the second half. One play comes to mind where we played it into the box and then out to the D were Terry was waiting. He then slipped in a first time ball to Anelka who failed to finish, which happened a few times in the game. If we finished better we could have and probably should have won 4-2, if not 4-0. Another positive was seeing Joe Cole back, though he did not really do much and looked out of touch, but that is to be expected. And lastly I was very happy with Deco’s game, who seems to have really improved under Ancelotti.
But still, we now have a bit of work to do to get back to the summit. It all starts with our home game with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. They just lost 3-0 to Ososuna but I’m still a bit wary of them as they have some quality players and will be looking to bounce back. Lets hope we get up and win :D
we need more english players,
lets play 4-3-3 tomorrow now that Joe cole is back and drogba can’t play ..
Instead of starting Kaluo, I think Ancelloti should start Joe cole and Maluda..
or go for christmas tree with deco and Joe cole playing behind the strikers..

well the author of this blog is also a human, yes he sometimes makes such posts based on match report not witnessing it with eye.
But everyone is human, having this blog is enough and i like BC posts anyway. GL to us with Athleti!

@ BluRehman
well said mate. i’ve seen a Chelsea fan makin sense after a looong time.
@ BC
come on dude everyone has a right to express themselves here just like you do. I agree with BluRehman that fans of other clubs (me Arsenal for example) also read ur posts and bogus opinions with all emotion and no real sense only make us laugh on you and your so-called club.

To be honest with you I care less about facts. I’m a Chelsea fan. Being a fan is all about emotions and passion; and very less about facts and statistics
of course!!!! for you plastic fans from India its just glory hunting. as soon as Chelsea will start losin u will cohse another team. facts and stats mean nothing for Chelsea fans.. thts cos facts are not very impressive related to Chelsea…. ZERO times european champs, only 3 times English champs…. even Villa is better than you!

These are not researched. These are the views of a Chelsea fan.
