What a start. What. A. Start. This is gonna be some ride guys! In some ways, this is the kind of start we should have. At hindsight, we’re better off with such matches early in the season and we’re better off winning these type of matches rather than easy ones upfront. I have not forgotten how high-flying we were early last season – winning matches, dominating games and scoring goals and all that – until our tactics and weaknesses were found out. Given that Ancelotti is trying out something new, we don’t really need to get early success. Let us struggle, work hard and find out the other side of this system as early as possible, when we have the players in the squad. Basically, let’s not get ourselves in a corner when Drogba, Essien and Kalou are going to be away for the African Cup of Nations.
From that point of view, I’m very happy with this game. The big plus is we played magnificently, at least I thought so. We were very comfortable on the ball, we dictated the pace of the game, we dominated them all over the pitch. We had about 70% possession with a ridiculous 33 shots. We had several intelligent and decisive attacking moves and also created numerous chances. The most glaring thing was our inability to finish off the game with the million chances we created. Drogba could be a lot of things but he is not the best finisher in terms of conversion rate. Anelka, unless given on a plate, does not convert enough chances.
With the new system, I do see that Chelsea can control the game as well as create a lot of goal scoring opportunties. I do understand why the club is after Sergio Aguerro. I haven’t see too much of him. We have a Drogba so we don’t need a similar striker. We don’t need another Anelka because that’s not what we want. We need someone with the strength and skill of Drogba and the finishing prowess of Anelka. I’m not sure if Aguerro is the answer. Someone like Samuel Eto would have fitted right in.
I’m always seen as someone who picks on Anelka. See, my stance has always been clear. When he started playing for Chelsea, he was poor. He missed the penalty that lost us the champions league. And then he improved. Started finishing better. Under Hiddink, he worked harder, for himself and the team. At one point, I even had an Anelka wallpaper in my laptop. All that when he was trying and working hard. Now, he just seems to have gone back to his inglorious Chelsea past. He is the weakest link in our attacks. I’m very sure and confident about this. Personally, I’m not even open for arguments. He is the weakest link in our attacks. So much so, that I’d start Drogba with a Kalou or Sturridge in the next match, instead of giving one more chance for Anelka to also-run.
Lot has been said about Mikel’s performance of late under Ancelotti. Mikel has been brilliant for us but this new formation is a bit new experience for him. Our players are very matured to adapt to changes and play different formations. The ones that lack experience are the ones who are going to find it difficult to get accustomed to the new set up. That’s why I think Mikel is finding difficult. He is a great young talent but he is a bit inexperienced too. I’d be lot more patient with him. While I’d be patient with him, I would not start him in the next match. I’d rather have Essien in the holding midfield and start Ballack. Mikel can then impress Ancelotti in the training ground and get back in.
Coming back this match, we were seconds away from a morale killing start to the league campaign. There was a time when no team could score at Stamford Bridge. It used to be such a prize for the opponents to score a goal at the Bridge. It’s no longer the case, which is a bit sad. Why is that we need to concede a goal to pick things up? Is this becoming a habit? And the goal that we conceded was very shabby. Mikel should take the bulk of the blame for making a poor headed which instead of clearing almost assisted them and for posing like a statue in the middle of the box. Mikel certainly lacks two things in his game – reflexes and acceleration. He needs time to think and it works when he has the ball because he knows how to keep it. When he is off the ball, he does not have the reflex to quickly anticipate and react.
With this new formation, it is a bigger responsibility for the holding midfielder because the attacking midfielder and the side midfielders are play up and would not always get to the defending box. Earlier, Mikel was always helped by Essien and Lampard. In the current set up, Essien and Lampard are supposed to be more attack-minded which means more responsibility for Mikel. It’s a question of whether Mikel has what it takes to take this role. If he finds it difficult, I’m not surprised and I won’t blame him. We can afford to keep him in the bench until he’s ready while we have Essien as the holding midfielder and use Deco and Ballack in the midfield.
That said, the Hull City goal was certainly against the run of play. And it’s so sad that it had to be Stephen *unt. The bridge crowd did nice job of reminding him of his thuggish attack on Cech and his lack of courtesy in dealing with that issue. The Chelsea goal was always coming and when Hull City scored and I was double sure that we were going to dump them. When we had that free kick opportunity so close to the goal, I was truly hoping that Didier takes it. I have seen him score free kicks from close range. Even in PES 2009, I use Drogs to take those close range free kicks. His shot becomes unstoppable because of the shot power if he gets the angle right. And that’s what he got damn right yesterday. I thought I was super-excited until I saw Roman celebrate the goal.
Second half was just Chelsea trying everything possible to get that winner. We were a bit unlucky and mostly were guilty of not being clinical with our finishing. Which is why we had to wait till the death for the winner. I was not quite convinced with substitute decisions. Carlo got Ballack for Mikel at half time which I thought was just right. Deco coming in for Malouda made our attack lighter and slower. If I were going to make this compromise Deco must bring in something that Malouda did not. If the expectation was to bring in some flair and creativity to break the Hull defence, I’m not sure if Deco did that. Anyway, he did provide the assist where the idea was certainly Drogba’s while Deco executed the pass. The subbing of Anelka was way too late. I thought Anelka could have been taken off at half time or at least before the 60th minute.
Kalou was brought on for just 15 minutes including the stoppage time. The impact that Kalou made in those 15 minutes was much more than what Anelka did in 75 minutes. Haven’t I said this line a dozen times before? Unfortunately, all I have to do is just repeat. I’ll be pleased to see Kalou start the match with Drogba. We all know that Drogba and Kalou partner the attack for Ivory Coast and they in fact, play well together. Plus, most of the times, Kalou has always got to play only out of position. Let’s play Kalou as a striker along with Drogba. It’s worth the punt.
Not sure if Drogba meant to score and I think he was only trying to cross. I think so because he chipped it with his left foot. If he was trying to score, it would have put it away with his right foot. Anyway, Cheslea were truly deserved winners. Credit to Drogba for trying until the last moment. He believed that we could win. Three cheers to the spirit of Didier Drogba and Chelsea FC.
Something tells me that this 4-4-2 narrow diamond would work for us. I also have a feeling that this formation allows us to play more attacking football. I believe we will stick with this and will also master it. While we are in the process of mastering it, there could be some glitches here and there. As long as Ancelotti is quick enough to react to the match situations, we should be fine. We haven’t got the opportunity to see what Carlo’s so called ‘Plan B’ is. All that he had to do was to just do subs. We haven’t really changed formations as we were chasing the win. I’d even say, we didn’t have to.
The 4-4-2 narrow diamond was creating chances for us till the last minute. Because Hull City were defending deep and narrow, this formation of ours actually helped. On the other hand, if we were playing 4-3-3, we’d have seen more inefficient passes and less support for Drogba and Lampard upfront. Overall, I’m still positive on Ancelotti. When things didn’t go well, I liked the way he was getting angry. In comparison, Scolari was getting upset and worried and his body language showed that. Whereas Ancelotti was more angry and furious than upset and worried. I like those kind of football managers.
Good start for the season. We are winning. Drogba is scoring. Lampard is doing well. We are settling down with our formation. We have a series of winnable matches in the next few weeks. We should be able to continue winning while getting accustomed to the new formation. Don’t worry much about today’s result. Remember the opening day match against newly-promoted Wigan in the 05-06 season? We won with an injury time goal from Crespo and absolutely did not deserve to win that game. Mourinho even admitted that to Jewel when he shook his hands with him. And you know who were the champions that season!
Meanwhile, we are supposedly still very active in the transfer market. Aug 18th will be a key date for a lot of transfers because that’s when some of the clubs and key players could possibly make their first champions league appearance this season. Expect some transfers to get done before the players get cup-tied or get some strong hints as players don’t get named in their squads.
Finally, the first round of fantasy league and IKTS results will be out by this evening. I’m not really topping the table as of today but that’s fine. Interestingly, there was a winner in all the matches yesterday, there were no draws! I was really surprised that some people could really predict the results so well in IKTS. Anyway, a separate post on the fantasy league to come later. Cheers till then!

Sorry guys! This has turned out to be an awfully long post! Didn’t realise when I was typing it :-)
I thought we played alright, we were all over them possession wise. The problem was in the final third. Because of the narrow midfield we lacked penetrating runs from wide except from Boswinga, who played well i thought. We also lacked the creativity and the execution of the killer final ball, and when there was a final ball, we lacked the finish. Hopefully we will finish better as the season progresses, but our lack of width really worries me.
Without wide players either starting or coming off the bench, we are going to come very predictable unless we can break down teams with good passing and quick ball movement, which we really couldn’t do yesterday.
Credit to Hull, they defended well and Hunt took his goal well, but we were lucky to come away with the win. We can thank Didier Drogba for that, MOTM performance. Lucky he is in my fantasy team ;P
Gud job guys keep d flag flying.up blues
I think it was a pretty ok. Not the best though. For some reason I do find comfort when the other team scores first. We do always come back and win it. But I think we need wingers. Wonder when Zhirkov will start. I’ve never felt “safe” or guaranteed with Anelka. He just misses too much and it looks just so careless. I was hoping Di Santo would have gotten a chance to play more but I guess that won’t be happening.
Aside from that there was a nervy edge in the game. Its nice to get that out in an early game since we have more chances of making up in terms of points.
Gd job guys keep it up.!!!
A good start to the new season and hopefully more wins to come, the result may look like we had a lucky escape but really we could have won by 6 or 7 goals the finishing just needs to be better. The new formation will take a bit of time to get used to but what worrys me is how it will effect our wide players, they’re going to be playing very narrow and that won’t help their game. On the other hand pairing drogba and anelka together will be good for both players and it looks like the fullbacks will be providing the width.
One thing about Ancelotti is that if anyone can make chelsea champions league winners I’m sure he can, how many other managers can say they’ve two european cups !? It’s a short and elite list
I though deco’s 20 minutes on pitch was more efficient than ballack’s 45 mins, though ballack played good.
It’s a bit of a question to sign smn orn not.
i think if need width this formation is good enough.
Only midfield
————-lampard—————– ———–zhirkov/lampard———
—–zhirkov/malouda—-deco—— or —malouda——-essien/lampard-
—————essien—————– ———lampard/mikel————-
And i kinda doubt Aguero will give everything we need in his first year.
It’s kind of 50/50.
i would not buy and use the current team, and wait for reserves as this team has enough depth.
The only question is mastering the diamond.
Hope to see Zhirkov playing soon.
Carlo must start Deco from next games. He deserve this thing.
I hope someone stop arsenal, they are nothing.I WISH EVERTON PLAY LIKE THAT WHEN WE FACE THEM.
Hi Blues! Congratulations to your first win of this BPL season but the result should be better. I think you can get more and more ultimate form and goodplay and also amazing form and outstanding results.
nice recap BC, but i have to disagree wit you on the kalou thing, no way in hell is he better then the French blur.
and Agueru would be an awesome reinforcement to our team thats for sure
deco did well when came in and hopefully he will be good for us this year.
first day of the season offered alot of kewl goals, like the stunner from
HUGO RODALLEGA=)
and the ars had a freak show @ goodison park
One Fact for all Anelka haters:
You guys feel that he misses chances, but have you ever thought that those chances are usually created by he himself with his sheer pace. If there were other strikers in his position you wouldn´t even get to see that “chance” und you guys would be blaming midfield for lack of creativity. its true that DD has a bit edge over anelka, but if we can use anelka wisely he can give us more shots on target and conversion rate. Never doubt his accuracy. We should play them more together, give them time to adapt. Its just one game and many of you are already frustrated. Cool down, have patience, support players. that way we can help lift moral of our team. cheer them, they are our players and we need to encourage them to give their best, not demotivate them and frustrate them.
KTBFFH!

I agree except that maybe that Drogba and Anelka together will take too much work in a 4-4-2 narrow diamond.
Maybe we should look at Drogba and Anelka partnering with Kalou in rotation so that we have strikers who can compliment each other a lot more on the pitch.
Whats Ancelotti doing with Pizarro and Sheva???
I agree with everything you’ve said, BC. I almost feel bad for Mikel because I think Ancelotti may be putting a great deal of pressure on him and I’m not sure if he can handle it just yet. I do think, though, that by the end of the season he’ll be an entirely new player.
Also, I’ve always been a fan of Ballack and he killed me last season with his poor performance, but it seems like he’s really trying to fight for his position on the team. Through the pre-season and in this game, he comes on the pitch and makes a difference which is a big deal considering his major criticism last season was that he was nothing more than a warm body.
Overall, we did well, but we really need to start finishing. I was surprised by Hull’s performance and I think it’ll be fun to watch them battle to keep their standings in the EPL.
Hey BC, nice post again. Good to see we got off to a winning start to the season for the 7th/8th (??) time in a row. Lol, didnt even realise yr post was ‘that long’. I dont agree with the people who say Mikel played badly. I think for his age and the fact tht he originally is a CAM, he did very well to adapt to the defensive midfield position. I think we all should just give him some time to mature and I assure you he will be our next Makelele !
I think Kalou should be played in the next game, Anelka was coming back to his old self a little, and although he runs a little more now, he still finds it a bit difficult to get shots into the goal (but I guess you can’t blame him too much, so does DD ;) ). But Kalou showed good control, pace and power against Hull in the last 10-15 mins.
Hopefully we will continue with this spirit and win our next few games, taking control of the top of the table from early up.
KTBFFH !!
congrats for the first win guys! what a nice game from drogba! btw if you want to predict the premier league for free join me on “lord of bets” it’s 100% free and you can predict on every game for free it’s really fun.
I dont think Drogba had a great game..he scored two scorchers.(why the hell he admitted it was a cross:-( )..but thats what Drogba is all about; even off games he can do this..aguero will be a great acquisition..but the problem is his valuation…any one noticed our loaned players play yesterday.’di santo had some 30 mins (may be more than the whole of last season :-) )he did okay..i felt he was only one on the pitch who is determined..

Anybody noticed that Birmingham has players named Ferguson and Benitez on the same team?
bosingwa+cash for ribery??????????nah….bosingwa must stay….
but it will be a gr8 plus to get ribery or/and aguero…..we need a right mid player…wat is sheva and pizarro gonna do?i dun wan chelsea to keep them to rot at the bench
Ribery has committed himself to Bayern and has ruled out a move, so in that case it would be absolute nonsense for Chelsea to still go ahead and sell Bosingwa to them. I don’t think there will be any “Marquee” player coming in before the window shuts down and frankly speaking there is not much we need to improve on to begin with. All we need to do is, adapt to the new formation and once we master it then Im sure we will score goals. Though with that being said a part of me wouldn’t really mind seeing someone like Pato or Aguero join Chelsea. I still have my doubts on Aguero because of his height, although Pato on the other hand is stronger, taller and younger then Aguero, still none the less both are great players. Btw Spurs are leading Liverpool 2-1 at the moment, with the penalty king “Stevie Me” scoring his 1st of the 10 odd penalties this season, which somehow makes him the best player in the world, yeah orite mate!!
woo i rocked IKTS, no idea how lol should have gone for a man city win now i think about it, then i would have been top! :)
hope aguero joins…
on the new championship manager 2010 demo (on the main website forums if you haven’t tried it) i bought Ribery for 35million and aguero for 42.5 million and they are bloody brilliant. Drogba and kun link up like nobody elses business. Kun is top scorer with 5 going into game week 3. Ribery is great too, but doesn’t half make it difficult picking a midfield. Ribery, Joe cole, Malouda, Zhirkov and kalou all want to play on the wings!
I think in real life, we’d be alright without ribery when joe cole comes back, i don’t want to see him go. If we didn’t have malouda and zhirkov, i’d love for joe cole to play on the left and ribery on the right, but we can’t have both malouda and zhirkov left out.. so i’d say no to ribery and give joey his place. If he continues to play awful when fully fit, then we can move for someone else next season.
Aguero for sure though with drogba, Anelka back up.. when drogba and anelka get a bit too old.. imagine a di santo aguero forward line! (with an old drogba coming on as an impact player!! :D)
Let ballack start in the stariting 11 common his a good player. we didnt buy him for nothing!

what a filthy hypocrite! thats exactly what evra did last week! he obviously wasnt injured because he was able to get up and pass his penalty straight to cech!
Liverpool lost..lol..

muwahahahaha it was a beautiful
Mediocre Plays and bench
Spurs had a way deeper squad
chelsea played good but think about our squad is getting old and i thought did season we would be clearind a lot of players. but seriously we have to many old players
first game of the season is bound to see some rustiness, we’ll improve, 27 unblocked shots is too much, we should have put in 6 goals at least.
Anelka, im not keen on him, but he adds dimension, id keep him but i would rotate sturridge into play more
mikel needs this as it will prove a real test and push him to add everything to his game that he misses, i still think attacking midfielde would be interesting to watch him play.
drogba’s goals were both beauties, better than lampard’s chip against hull last season
i think we’ll be fine as we are
i have to say
BlueChampion once mentioned, we are an unlucky team. Liverpool always had luck, man utd always had luck, arsenal had less than both, but we……we as chelsea fc had none. I think that if we can get 6 added minutes and drogba can score that, it shows the luck is in
am glad with the win we had gainst hull and not worried bout anelka. He will do just fine and silence his critics once more.
Nice, Drogba’s priceless brace put to shame that midget hunter’s luck-filled goal!

……………….Well, for Sir Alex there’s no place better than to start with his own squad. Have you guys seen how Nani and Valencia were trying to stall and gain free kicks against Birmingham? And many of the 50-50 decisions went Man U’s way. Don’t understand when refereeing decisions will stop going Man U’s way? When Rooney was fouled in second half, before he went down he passed the ball to berbetov and the referee waved play on. But berbetov could’nt reach the ball and the ref then gave a free kick, how suitable!
………………. Both Nani and Valencia have started Ronaldo like ‘sit down’ protests and I can’t understand how referees fall for it! Just Hope that there are no such decisions that cost us trophies this time around. And for Sir Alex he should first teach his own players and wrestlers like evra before making statements for the betterment of the game.
I for one dont like the diamond much, it offers little going wide and there will be some very tough matches agaisnt smal sides like hull, especially when they park the bus, the consolation is the fact that joey and zhirkov will be back soon to add much needed width, anelka and mikel should be out of the team, anelka did nothing the entire match, he is like 2 people into 1, sonmetimes he cannot get enough of the ball, but sometimes like agnst hull he seems unintersted and uninvolved.
Mikel is not learning his trade, i wish maka was still here, he could have been great in a diamond and could have taught his sucessor well, essien at cdm is a waste, he has so much drive to give going forward and restricting him to patrolling in front of defence is not a good idea, can see why ancelotti wanted pirlo.
another thing that worries me greatly is the lack of pace in our forward players, at milan he had pato and kaka, plus the league was much slower there, here the league is quick and you dont get time on the ball, which is why mikel will find it very hard to adjust in such a major role, lamps too has looked poor of late, hopefully playing at the tip of the diamond helps him rather than restricts him which has seemed to be the case, although we do need another attacking mid fielder and a striker like aguero.
not to forget because we will loose drogs and essien for the acon as well as drogs being banned for 5 matches in the CL…
sorry for the long comment, its my first in months!!
Alright Guys! this is my verdict. Yes we are all glad we won. I am happy our performance has been questioned in some quarters of the media (rightly so, in my opinion). However, i think we battered Hull City. The problem is our conversion rate.
we created enough chances to have won at least 3-1 or 4-1. Yes Hull’s was lucky goal but do i need to say our winner was a lucky one as well (though the freekick reminded me of old winky!). Herein lies the problem, Mikel. Sorry guys but in my opinion Mikel is our weakest link right now. He has been in the first team for about 3 years now. He pget’s games, unlike Di Santo, Stoch, Sinclair or even Manciene. Yet Mikel comes across as the most frightened player on the pitch. Always afraid of making mistakes, plays the simple (backpass, sideways) ball. Guys, Lancelotti bases his system on the deep lying midfielder (Pirlo) and to a large extent the midfielder at the tip of the diamond (Kaka). Mikel is too frightened to take responsiblity, ie he sprays his passes either sideways to Bosingwa and Ash or back pass to JT and Alex/Carva. He will have to seriously improve else i dare this may well be his last season with us(though i hope not). On the whole it’s still early days yet and i like the new Didier Drogba. Honest and willing to work hard for the team. This is to hoping for the best. We R Chelsea, Blue in the blood.

I’m not looking forward to Chelsea Vs Man U for this reason.
Too bad Nani and Valencia can’t emulate the skills as well.

I think we have the signing number 4.
I really don’t know this guy, but he seems to play on central midfield role and his name is Nemanja Matic, 20 year old.
At what time and in which channel is the Sunderland vs Chelsea match telecasted live in India ?
Undoubtedly Anelka will get better remember he was the golden boot last year !!!
Has anyone heard anything about Zhirkov? Any idea when his return date may be?
Zhirkov is yet to return to light training so he will most liklely miss the next game aswell and might feature in the game next sunday. Looking forward to the match tonight, although we could be in deep water again just like the Hull game, well until the new formation is perfected we have to expect a dogfight in every match, which suits fine with me because it will keep the lads motivated and engaged, rather then getting sloppy and careless after a comfotable 4-0 win.
I was reading an article published by the mirror and it was quite funny, its regarding the dressing room name given to Carlo by the players, they call him “The Tourist” lol because of his basic english and that he speaks like an Italian Toursit, but the most funny thing in the article was about what the lads called Avram Grant, “Baron Greentoad” LOLLLLLL.
Also as most of you might know, Chelsea have singed Nenmanja Matic on a 4 year deal and Pizzaro has left Chelsea on a permanent basis and joined Werder Bremen, well good news on both ends I guess!!
Guys we have bought a little know midfielder – MATIC ( i like the name by the way) I can see him in a number 14 or 4,
guys why would one sell Pizarro and not sheva.. to me either we have more signings or sheva is gonn ge sold as well with KUN coming in.
I hope KUN is our New number 9.. even though its Di santo’s number……
I hope we go for the Russian Alan the new lampard soon.
buy the way guys i have always wanted someone to give kalou his chances as a striker…. and he looked good at it

………………….I’ve checked the ESPN/STAR schedules but there’s no match mentioned there for India. So, I guess they won’t be showing it as they are showing Champions League play-offs in other Asian countries. Kick-off time is roughly around 12-12.15. We may not be able to see it on T.V.
………………….But I do hope they show it as this has happened several times before(it doesn’t show in the schedule but the match starts on time.) Hope we win like we had last year 5-0 at Stamford bridge. Lets see….
I think we must not play deco anywhere else but the top of the diamond if we are going to keep him…. he passes well

Straight away 4 changes from the team that started last time.. good idea to rotate central defending position, because we need a fit carvalho for big 4 and cl games..
