Chelsea vs Man Utd | The Frank Lampard Role!
Football, finally! Proper, top flight football and a trophy in sight! Chelsea, the FA Cup champions will take on Man Utd, the premier league champions, on Sunday in the FA Community Shield match. After a near flawless pre-season, there is no better match-up than a trophy match with Man Utd. Only yesterday, Carlo said that there won’t be any further signings for Chelsea. Few weeks back, Sir Alex had said the same for Man Utd. I’m not disappointed with this update from Carlo but I’m not too excited about this either.
Chelsea may not even have spent as much as Sunderland this summer. There were only three signings of which one was a free signing and another was through the tribunal. So that leaves only the Zhirkov signing where we had to spend 18m. For weeks, various black suits from Stamford Bridge have been saying that there would be another one top signing. And that’s what we’ve all been waiting for. May be because we were very open about our intention to make another top purchase, we had to deal with some inflated prices. So, Carlo’s recent declaration that there won’t be any further signings and that he will take only this squad to this season could all be just mind games. This is one way of telling the selling clubs that though we wanted to make one more top signing, we are not really desperate and we have a squad that can win the trophies. So, all I’m trying to say is that we could still make that marquee signing, irrespective what Ancelotti says.
By the way, the Pirlo news has also died down. There was no snub as is being made out by the dirty press. Pirlo decided to stay with Milan. The same way Terry did not snub Man City but opted to stay with Chelsea. So, Deco and Carvalho stay. I’m happy that Riccy stays. I’m still not decided on Deco. I have a feeling that Ancelotti can bring Deco back to some kind of form and importance. Still there is no news on Pizarro and Sheva. Are they going to play for Chelsea this season?
On the finer topic of whether our squad is already complete, I would say NO. One of the fundamental assumptions that we sub-consciously make is that Frank Lampard is available for all season and he would play. Lampard has been able to keep himself fit for most or all of the season for many years (touch wood, dammit, hug the forest). And we seem to assume that he would play 50+ matches this season as well. If Lampard is unable to play for say, half a season, we simply have no replacements for a player like Lampard. Of course I know that Lampard is not such a player whom you’ll be able to replace easily but we don’t even have a decent replacement. Essien, Ballack, Deco, Joe Cole are all quite different and do not produce what Lampard does.
Ballack does not have the legs and the final third capabilities of Lampard. Deco can never be a box-to-box midfielder. Joe Cole does not even think like a midfielder be an attacking one or otherwise. Essien is one player who can come close. He can be a box-to-box midfielder with his ability to read the game and his undying stamina, drive and desire. But I think Essien lacks the vision and accuracy of
Lampard. And Lampard can win you matches with his attacking play. Essien on the other hand, contributes immensely to our defence but I have my doubts if he would be able to win matches for us with his attacking play.
We talk so much about the Makelele role. There is infact a Lampard role too. He is very unique as well. He has defined his role rather than his role defining his play. He is there in attack, he is there in defence, he is there in midfield, he scores with his feet, he scores with his head, he assists, he aids, he chips, he long passes, he throughballs, he takes free kicks, he takes corners, he takes penalties, he makes goal line clearances, he tackles, he plays every single minute in every single match, he captains when needed and leads all the time. In the football world and football media, he is still very underrated. It is Chelsea and the supporters of Chelsea that are willing to give him his due. The way I see it, he has created a Lampard role which only very few players play and not one to the degree of Frank Lampard.
That’s why he is so important. And basically the issue is we have not really seen a Lampard-less Chelsea in the last five or six seasons. So that’s a risk that we have not really considered or we don’t want to consider. In the whole of Chelsea squad, the most irreplaceable player has to be Frank Lampard. Yes, it is not John Terry, Didier Drogba or Michael Essien, it has to be Frank Lampard. The one top player that we want to sign ideally should be a very talented player, who can be an understudy for Lampard as well as being a partner for him. Someone like Gourcuff. Someone like Diego. Unless we have a suitable candidate to support Lampard and to take over the Lampard role over a period of time, our squad will not be complete.
Oh I was talking about the match on Sunday right? We have
a full squad to choose from except for Zhirkov who is doubtful for Sunday. Anyway, when we have fully fit squad, I don’t see Zhirkov starting yet. Not over Ashley Cole. Not over an all guns blazing Malouda. This will be the first be the first proper test for Carlo Ancelotti. In a superb pre-season preparation, for the first time he played an English opposition, we needed to two goals in the last two minutes to snatch a draw. A week later, we are playing the champions of England. It’s a big test for the Man Utd squad too. There is a popular belief that they are weakened due to the absence of Ronaldo and Tevez. That’s what I feel too but let’s remember that Ronaldo wasn’t around for the first part of the last season and Tevez was never an automatic starter.
Carlo put it very well. The biggest strength of Chelsea is that they are able to retain all the key players which is something none of the other top four teams can say. Man Utd lost Ronaldo and Tevez. Arsenal lost Adebayor and Toure. Liverpool lost Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso. Chelsea lost none. Even better, players like Malouda, Mikel and Drogba have signed contract extensions. Chelsea is certainly the strongest side in the premier league this season and I want to see that on the pitch. This time, Chelsea must show their authority all through the season and that must begin on Sunday. A victory of Man Utd would be a great start for Chelsea, Ancelotti and that 4-4-2 narrow diamond.
My prediction is a 2-1 win for Chelsea. Drogba and Anelka to score. The match starts at 15:00 UK. For the viewers in India, the match is telecast live on Sony Pix channel. I’m really really excited that the season is here and I’ll be watching football tomorrow! You know this bit already – Be there at BC Shout – for the live match chat! And yes, do join the BlueChampions.Com Fantasy Premier League. Catch you after the win :-)
well since you put it that way i am a bit worried we didn’t get a new CAM but we would of had to sell someone in order to do that which would make it easy to say deco. Could Ledesma or Pirlo really ever sub for Lampard? If it was possible I would rather have Ronaldinho than them.
The New Wembley is a good place for us.I think we’ve won every match we’ve played there.
I hope rly chelsea wins this game so they can prove who are the right owners of the premier league title

Didn’t we lose the Carling Cup (2008) and the Community Shield (2007-2008) there?
Really looking forward to the community shield but has anyone read an interview with Lamps in the times? He said he wants to keep playing until hes 37 or 38. I think if he managed that and kept scoring goals for 6 or 7 more years then he might be considered one of the greatest midfielders ever. Mind you, Some idiots will still find a way to discredit him
Hi Guys,
The curtain raiser is finally here. I m glad its against Manchester United. They are our biggest competitors for the EPL. A proper trashing of Man Utd will give us immense confidence to take into the new season. I want us to win this game convincingly. Man Utd is considerably weaker than last season.Ronaldo n Tevez has gone.Van Der Saar and Vidic are out. Their team for tomorrow will be much weaker than ours. If we cant beat them tomorrow with our full strength team, we are sending out the wrong message.
As For lampard, there is no replacement for such a player. Steven Gerrard is the closest I can think of. I dont think there is anyone else in world Football today who can replicate the work that Lampard does.
Lets win 4-0 tomorrow;)…Lampard scores 3 and Rooney scores an Own Goal
i dont like diego and certainly wouldn’t be ideal to replace lampard, gourcuff, i haven’t seen much of. Really, we should look to younger english talents, Tom Huddlestone would be a good way to go seeing as we’ve missed out on fabian delph, jonjo shelvey needs a real challenge to prove his worth. Its either them or two other guys I think could be okay, Marek Hamsik and Ivan Rakitic.
Im certain, in fact id be willing to bet a substantial amount of money on chelsea taking the premiership title home this season, in fact, I might go to the bookies. Fact is, the seasons we’ve lost, we have lost players and man utd has always added
now the tables have turned and it will be reflected massively
The new line up for fergie puts him at a big risk. As far as Im aware, zhirkov hasn’t gotten his work permit yet so cant play tomorrow. Man utd is going to be hurt. If we play a compact diamond like i expect, malouda and ashley cole are going to create alot of trouble on the left side all day and that doesn’t even bring anelka into account yet
I always preferred the days when we played the diamond with joe cole on the left and ballack on the right, I felt our attacks were more devastating although we lacked possession control. Alot of the game is resting on what nani and valencia can achieve if they play. Fergie will more than likely play 4-2-2-1-1 with rooney behind berbatov, it wont work, essien will overpower any combination of midfielders fergie picks and he knows it, he is counting on rooney to be a central influence to pin back essien but it won’t work. Expect a relentless attack tomorrow. I’m going for 3-1 to Chelsea, Drogba to score the opener, two assists, coming from either drogba, lampard or joe cole to give anelka two goals
we need this win, it will set the tone for the season and send a message to the league
I would prefer to chelsea to buy one more striker to cover for didier.
one thing worrying me is ancelloti revealing the formation even before the season starts.. it may back fire with fergie and rafa as it happened last time with lfs..
with vidic, vandersaar out, I think it has to be advantage chelsea.
Lampard is irreplaceable. With the wingers back in action, i think its better not to stick with 4-4-2 diamond. It made sense last with joe cole out and kalouda flopping big time. I feel its somewhat better to go with the formation we played under Guus – ie 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 whatever you put it as. We have lot of strikers. Pizzaro is decent enough to get first team action in serie a or bundesliga. its better for pizzaro to leave us. shevs should go back to ukraine and play for kiev.

I noticed that your league shows that you don’t start scoring until mid-season. (Gameweek 19). I’m sure this is a mistake but be sure in the admin page to set the scoring to start at week 1.
you have 6 days to change it but I thought you should know.

Thanks man! Actually I had not noticed it. Now I’ve corrected it. Thanks a lot. By the way, I missed to say in that post that my inspiration this time to start a fantasy league is YOU! It was your comments and ideas that led me to this fantasy league. Thank you!
BC, I can see Mikel starting on Sunday against United. Essien as a holding midfielder would be waste of his energy and drive. I know Hiddink played him in there last season against top teams, most noticeably against Liverpool and Barcelona in champions league but I always think Essien would be better off playing in advanced roles as he has loads of different qualities. I can see him starting in the right hand of our diamond midfield.
Ballack is just back from injury. He should be on the bench. I can’t see him starting week in and week out this season as his consistency and age will always be under question mark. With Deco likely to get more playing time under Carlo than he did under Hiddink, Essien available from the start, Carlo has a faith in Mikel in that holding role, Ballack might find it little harder than anybody else in the squad to get games under his belt. But nobody should forget Ballack is a big game player and his experience could prove a real deal at the end to an already experienced Chelsea team.
So 11 against United for tomorrow will be:
————————–Cech————————–
–Bosingwa———Carvalho—-Terry——A.Cole–
————————Mikel—————————-
–Essien———————————–Malouda—-
———————–Lampard————————-
——————Drogba———-Anelka————-
Nothing related to chelsea , but thought I would post here just so that every one gets an idea of the champions league prize money .. Look way down at the charts..

You are very welcome mate! I would also like to return the thanks for such an amazing fan site. I read alot of Chelsea fan sites but this is the only one I comment in. I really enjoy the ‘world fan base’ feel this site has.
Many of the English sites are actually surprisingly prejudice from comments by fans who post ‘outside of England’. Even though I have been a Chelsea fan for 13 years I still often feel like an outcast on several fan sites not based on my passion or my knowledge of the team but instead due to my nationality and/or residence.
This site is completely the opposite. This fan site represents Chelsea fans from all over the world and is a great tribute to how Chelsea is trying to spread their market base. Chelsea would never be as big as they are today if it wasn’t for fans outside of West London [Fans like many of us]. They (meaning the Chelsea marketing suits) would be fools not to subsidize this site as it continues to grow and grow as I have watched it germinate over the past 3 years.
Hats off to you BC and I hope I am there to celebrate with you the 09-10 Chelsea double Champions League and Premiere League trophies! KTBFFH!!

Guys, do we have it on some channel here in India?
SORRY!!! just read the whole article ;).. Sony pix it is :)!! Thanks Blue’s Champion!!!
thanks to chelsea – for so many years i was hiding. thanx to chelsea s tolerance i can come out of the hiding place and be a proud gay blues!!!!
p.s. ribery for chelsea
Martin
Chelsea should be able to control the mid field as i see no way that craick, anderson or flecher out controlling than our mids containing essin/mikel/lamps/ballack…we control the game which is wat the gaffer wants and we destroy man u as our defence is top notch.. The only worrying thing that i find is the width game as we use the fullbacks as ones but would team such as united not punish those open areas…let’s hope for the best…2-0 my score line with dorgba and lampard on target. Up blues..
yes trueblueboy,we have lost there couple of times. But i’am really positive about this match
CHELSEA is trying to get pato and ribery

I Disagree – The line was very close and you should always give the decision to the attacker. I think that call is how they all should be called. Don’t get me wrong I hated the goal I just thought the decision was correct.
Finally Chelsea win on PKs!! I think Chelsea winning and ManU losing help both teams seasons.
That’s 2 plastic trophies to put in the cabinet b4 the season even starts! Its gonna be a good year boyz!!
after the supposedly clattering of Evra into Ballack, MANURE had 2 possessions and did not make the choice to play the ball out ! so why would they expect chelsea to stop play? however i must agree that the referee was inconsistent as he blew to stop for Ballack previous to ‘check’ if was okay.
anyway, there is nothing to be done about it. MANURE had there chance and levelled scores at 2-2 and i really have my conviction that Rooney was offside. Good enough we have broken the jinx of penalty misses and it was good to note.
i guess JOHN TERRY was not confident he could take penalties again?

JT has never been in the initial starting 5 PK lineup. it went to 7 in the CL showdown where he slipped.
Oh man, now the Manure fans are accusing the referee of favoring us because he’s a Scouser (born in Merseyside). I’m very sure they won’t be complaining had the exact same situation happened favoring them instead.
i am happy with che winning penalties cech started saving them he almost saved from carrick

actually in the CL showdown, JT did take the 5th penalty kick, because anelka had refused to do so. Anelka went on to take the 7th penalty kick, where he missed
iam really impressed wth ballack’s performance in dis match…nd the penalty he scored was super…

Sour grapes. Someone just reminded me that a certain Wayne Rooney was also born in the Merseyside.
THE BLUESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS,WE ARE THE BEST.
