Transfer sagas are fun. I like them because there would suspense, there would be a lot of thrilling developments and more importantly there would be debates. Though some of them get really prolonged, the suspese may always remain until a final decision is made. Kaka to Man City was a classic. So was Ronaldo to Real Madrid. Henry to Barcelona was eventful too. David Villa and Ribery are unfinished sagas which have great potential to become legendary. I’m also very keenly watching what finally happens to Fabregas. So transfer sagas are fun. What I hate about transfer sagas are the ones that involve Chelsea. Quite naturally. The Robinho story was a heart breaking one last season. But we could move on. There are more such players and there is always someone who can replace players like Robinho. John Terry is not some Robinho.
The silent battle for John Terry makes me very uncomfortable. I’d surely say that Terry is weighing his options which means he is considering leaving Chelsea as much as he would consider staying here. Let’s not be blind to this and pooh-pooh the whole story. If Terry did not want to leave at any cost, he could have certainly handled this better. All our excuses that he is on holday and all that have gone out of the window. He back. He was at Stamford Bridge. He was at Cobham. He’s met the manager, staff and his fellow-players. He’s gone to the United States with the team. He’s played a pre-season friendly. He’s here among us. But he is silent.
Now it’s Lampard’s turn to talk for Terry. True to his name, he gives a very frank opinion on the whole issue:
I don’t know what he will do. I’ve been in John’s position, but everyone at the club wants him to stay. I had an option to leave last summer, to go with a manager who I love, but it came at a time in my life that, maybe, just wasn’t right. But the situation made me think an awful lot. It wasn’t an easy decision, either, and I don’t think people should criticise John. The fact is you can never take away what he’s done for Chelsea. He’ll always be a legend. I hope and I’m confident that, whatever happens, he will continue to be considered a legend here. People should respect his right to choose. When you’re a successful player this kind of thing is going to happen and then you have to make a decision. John’s a very honourable man and it doesn’t come down to money and things like that.
I know John. I know he’ll be thinking about what’s the right thing to do as a player and, in the longer term, for his career. No one should doubt that John Terry wants to be successful. No one should doubt that John Terry is a winner. This is not just about the money and people shouldn’t try to make it that black and white. It’s understandable because it’s Manchester City who have come in, but it’s up to John what happens. All I can say is that I’m very proud each time I play with him and, as a club, you want to keep players like John Terry. It’s as simple as that.
He can’t be more honest than that. He likes to compare his situation with that of Terry. That’s where I have a problem. When Lampard’s thing was going on he was in his last year of contract. He had an Avram Grant who apparently did not quite inspire him and an offer from Jose Mourinho would certainly have tempted him. I can understand that. Whereas, Terry has many years left in his contract. I don’t know what would be Terry’s rationale to move to City. I can understand if he is moving to a different league which will give him a different challenge. I can understand if he is moving to a top top club. Why would he consider moving to a club like City while the Chelsea revolution is entering a new phase?
What is that Man City offers that Chelsea does not? At Chelsea, he’s got respect, power, adulation, money and what not. He is a London boy and with Chelsea, he gets live in London. Now, that question again. What is that Terry would get at Man City that he is not already getting or may not get in Chelsea? I’m not talking about the M word here. Assuming that the M word is not the dealmaking factor (because Lampard said so), what else is? If Terry wants to go for a Barcelona or an Inter, you can certainly talk about the club prestige, new league, new country and a fresh challenge. But why Man City? Few seasons back, Gerrard was pretty close to joining Chelsea. At that time, the situation was pretty similar. At least, on Gerrard’s side he could have said that Tubby is going to win fuck all so I’m joining Chelsea who are successful under Mourinho. Still, Gerrard hasn’t touched the premier league trophy and I don’t he will ever unless he quits Liverpool. In Terry’s case, there is no reason to believe that Man City would be more successful than Chelsea. No way.
Finally, I have come to a conclusion that I need to believe some of the press reports that there is some irreparable relationship problem between Terry and someone at the Chelsea hierarchy. I refer back Terry’s response to Makelele’s accusation on him that he was behind Mourinho’s exit. Terry responded by saying that he never had that kind of power and if he had he could have changed many things at the club. Now I wonder what he was referring to. Who is he having a problem with? It can’t be with Ancelotti. Was it with Hiddink who punished Terry for a certain nightclub behaviour in March 2009? Is it with Roman? Is it with those bad elements around Roman that Mourinho once hinted about? I can keep looking for stories like a paparazzi. I know it’s not fair but if there are unanswered questions, that too such very fundamental ones, I’m bound to look for answers myself. Until and unless John Terry clears the air, in a very convincing manner (not like saying ‘I have a contract with Chelsea, I’m a Chelsea player today etc’) this is not going to die down.
Unfortunately, with every passing day amidst this uncertainty, the fans and supporters who adore John Terry as the symbol of Chelsea FC would feel let down and even if Terry decides to stay with Chelsea, he would have make do with lesser popularity than before. Because Terry has a few years left in his contract, Chelsea has no action to take if they want to keep Terry. The ball is in Terry’s court as he needs to submit a transfer request. There’s a rumour that Roman has flown to the United States to watch the pre-season friendlies and he’s going to speak to Terry. Okay then, now is the right time to run this poll. Go on.

heejj WTF Terry Stay..Terry will leave for Man City? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I´ve been feeling emotional the whole day since today´s match, and then you write such a heart-touching article. Just would say thankyou for nice article.
4-3-3 is our strongest formation, we play with one striker.. thats just our game.. hopefully carlito masters his formation .. i think we should fuck off with he damn CL(that competition is rigged) and focus on the EPL!!!
I gotta agree w/ Denver here. 4-3-3 is the way to go IMO. The diamond clutters things up in the middle and we have no width on the ball. Diamond formation also means if Lamps has an off game we most likley won’t get a single shot on goal.
On anohter note:
I was at the Rose Bowl last night and had excelent seats – the game for the most part was not all that spectactular (one blunder from IM’s 4th string keeper and one ‘Ify’ pen. call). But regardless it was nice to again see the guys you watch week in and out playing on a pitch instead of a telly. :)
I adore Mikel…great news! But i am very hopeful that Sheva, Kalou (Joey is injured, though) and Deco (even with his recent performance) get offloaded!
I WANT TERRY TOGO….I DONT BELIEVE IN PERSUASION..HE HAS DONE HIS PART FOR CHELSEA…IF HE WANTS TO GO…LET HIM GO PLEASE
central mid,
I think we’ll sign either Pirlo or Sneider
Pirlo, becoz’ Carlitto knows him well and he won’t become a flop becoz’ Carlitto is the manager.
Sneider, becoz’ he’s a quality player, and pretty young one but not proven in other leagues except La Liga and Dutch league.
As for strikers,
We have DD, Kalou, Anelka, Sturridge, Di Santo, Sheva, Pizzaro.
It depends if Di Santo and Sturridge show that they’re capable and if Sheva or Pizzaro stay, then we might not sign one.
But if Di Santo goes on loan to BlackBurn, Sheva to Zenit or D.Kiev, Pizzaro to Bremen, we might sign 1 striker, but i kinda think we might not sign one. Just look at how many strikers we have! 1 thing is certain we’ll sign an african striker this year. :)
I mean,
we will NOT sign an african striker. :)
terry is staying end of story .in 2 days he will commit publicly
Blues_godson:Do you know what will happen to a team without a leader ? John terry is not only our defender,he is the leader and spirit of the team.Frank Lampard is a big player, but his not a leader type.Terry will not leave Chelsea and i know it from start of this issue form ManC.
I think we only need a young Mid player for Our covering our strong Mid.
BC, theme a little too blinding with all this white all over the place… methinks …..a bit o’ blue bordering might make it an easier read ?
We’ve got some good pre-season action I feel. We played well for a starting game after a months break against the Sounders. We showed strength and control against Inter. Can not wait for the game against AC Milan, I have a feeling this will show us if Ancelotti really is over the whole home-sickness we thought he’d get considering he did manage in Italy only thus far (nothing like beating the team you coached for 7-8 to prove that huh?).
BC, I dont think you guys should worry too much about this JT situation. We all saw he was a rock in defence in the pre-season games, not to mention his determination in every single game that he has played for Chelsea FC. Its a bit scary, but at the end of the day, he should be a Chelsea player.
KTBFFH !
Denver is right, however, lets look at the overwhelming pluses
we have alot of young strikers, the best way for them to learn, is by playing with another striker so you may see di santo and sturridge playing alongside anelka or drogba, or maybe even on their own
our midfield is getting slower, we need a way to inject pace back into the team somehow
our midfield are all very good with long passing, joe cole and malouda don’t NEED to bomb into the box anymore, there will already be 3/4 players positioned around it so we’d have more controlled attacks.
Besides, I think Chelsea were at their best with the diamond, there is less pressure on the midfield to get foward, lampard clearly dictates the play and essien defends it, no more confusion with deco or ballack as to who’s pulling the strings
I think ancellotti is just playing to the absolute strengths of the team, if we can’t make the space and openings we need with 3 central midfielders, than surely two strikers will achieve it?
we certainly have some pace with kalou and sturridge, and di santo seems fairly quick. This will work wonders for us on the continent, not so much in the premiership as most teams are used to defending against two strikers. Well that clears up the fact we are not in the market for a striker
now reassessing the squad, we have essien and mikel who will predominantly defend over the halfway line, ballack who will play on the right of midfield or the centre after joe cole and lampard, malouda and zhirkov on the left. One more player to cover the right side properly would not go amiss, im not sure if ancelotti would want kalou to play on the wing
what i also like now, is we can interchange our playes at any point. The midfield is capable of taking up anyone elses position for short periods of time which will make it very hard for us to mark. By that I mean Lampard and ballack pass well with either foot, malouda likes cutting in to shoot as does joe cole and essien can find the pass and hit hard shots, dont be surprised if you see lampard laying off a pass with joe cole and malouda criss-crossing around the outside of the box. We can cause alot more damage with this formation than before
Ancelotti sees we need to attack, but also sees he shouldn’t change anything dramatically like scolari did
ive got good feelings about this season

no way biggie. he is staying
personallyy I really liked the last theme bc, but this looks so fresh so clean=)
but as joseHoliday said its blinding.
wit time I guess I will get used to it.
BTW great post.
Personally I don’t understand why they should renegotiate his contract if thats what they are about to do or still doing? in the end of the day I think he will stay. He needs to stay, compared the to clubs it doesn’t get better then this for JT.
city offer a million a month to terry. one would think that if he doesnt accept an outrageous bid, then he wont accept one that just has a few million more. one would also think that after all terry has been through with chelsea that the club would mean more to him the the piles of cash city is throwing at him.
Zhirkov set to start tomorrow vs. Milan, confirmed on chelseafc.com
Great comments by Lampard. The guy really is as terrific off the pitch as he is on. Also, happy to hear about Mikel. I think we need him. This whole Terry thing…I kind of echo the same feelings as BC. If Terry wants to go, he should be allowed to do so, but I don’t want to see him go and, personally, don’t think he will.
I’m also glad to hear that Sturridge will be 1st team. I think he will compliment Drogba well and greatly improve our offense, which I think the majority of us felt was lacking by the end of the season.
When it comes to the theme…I find the only thing I really miss is the bit at the bottom of the main blog page where it would give a preview of the most recent comments. I often stop by the blog multiple times a day and don’t have the capacity (apparently) to remember how many comments were posted the last time I visited. Otherwise, I’m liking it. Don’t see find it blinding or anything.

that you for enlighten that young man …. a teal with out a leader is like Gunners
442 can work easily for chelsea, malouda will be allowed to drift out wide when attacking. Bosingwa will be allowed to attack more and im guessing essien will be the defensive cover on the right.
The system is very fluid, and if played right it wont be too narrow in attack. I think the system could work very well as long as AC doesnt use the fullbacks for all the width, the system is based around moving the ball through channels and always having 2 options for a pass, very triangular in nature as each player will have two players that will help them out. The DM role is important in that it is the start of attack while the AM role is the last attack. The strikers will mainly be used to finish off chances and drift out wide to get the ball.
Its exciting because many of the players will feel more liberated under the system, essien, j.cole, lampard, kalou and anelka will be given roles they prefer. Malouda and mikel will be given much more responsibility, malouda especially who will need to be on his game as he will need to work centrally more.
i hope terry saga ends this weekend
I think the ‘saga’ never began cause it’s just getting so lame now
Basically the media is exposing how crap some Chelsea fans really are…
Good luck on your debut Yuri!
I hope Shevchenko plays today
hmm. why crap?
Obi Mikel for playmaking role?
That sounds very interesting, he can become another universal player, smth like atheltism of cb with creativity of am, also capable of doing dirty dm job.
Considering he’s only 22-23 years, I just hope he will gradually improve and become great.
Nice game, 2-1 to the Blues.. but would have preferred to not concede a goal. Zhirkov scored a nice winner, good way for he and Sturridge to make their respective debuts. I felt like after that Drogba stunner, they started to play a bit lazy, but it perhaps may be that it was a preseason match. There weren’t many subs at all as opposed to the previous matches, could be because Carlo wanted to beat his old team. I wonder why he brought on Shevchenko and Pizarro, maybe they are going to stay after all. I would’ve liked to see Sturridge have another go. But other than that there was some nice possession play and Chelsea continued their winning start.
