So who are we buying and selling this summer? If we were asked this question in winter, we might have come up with a list of OUT players and IN players. The reason is, under Scolari, the team looked somewhat incompetent to win anything big. Some players tested our patience and looked impossible to improve. We appeared to have too many weak areas and hence wanted a complete overhaul of the squad. Opinions have changed now. Opinions on Malouda have changed. Opinions on Bosingwa have changed. Opinions on Anelka have changed. Everything looks fine now. Full credit to Hiddink.
Now, the team looks rather complete. There is no need for a overhaul or exodus which was a popular cry in the middle of the season. We have the some key players who keep the team together. Some new players have stepped up to the challenge. Some near-failures have resurrected their form and probably, careers. We have very little need to be worried about. We are not in a situation like Arsenal for starters. While there are so many places that need not be filled or worried about, there are a few spots of bother.
In the goal, we have only Petr Cech and Hilario. Of course, we have the youth keeper too. When you’re aspiring to win everything on sight, this is not the situation you want to be in. Cudicini was a great second choice and I’d doubt if we would get such a fantastic second choice keeper who is also willing to be second behind Petr Cech. Unless, Ancelotti promises first team football, atleast in domestic cups, we may not get a good keeper who’s worthy to replace Cech in times of need. May be, we need to be looking out for young, prodigious keepers. Strangely, none of the transfer rumours involving Chelsea ever talk about a goalkeeper.
While we lost Cudicini in the mid-season, we also lost Wayne Bridge who was in the same boat as Cudicini. Very good player in his position but always second choice to a better player in the squad. Bosingwa did a fantastic job at the left back against a certain Messi over two legs in champions league semifinal. We also have Ivanovic or Ferreira who can step in if needed. But if this situation continues, the left back position would be seen as a chink in the Chelsea armour and teams would start targetting and exploiting that position. There are rumours about Zhirkov joining Chelsea but just like the goalkeeper position, the left back that joins must be willing to play second fiddle to Ashley Cole. That is, if the Ashley Cole pay hike rumours are true.
Nothing needs to change in the midfield. I have always said that we have the best midfield in Europe with Essien, Lampard, Ballack and Mikel. No need to change that. Essien and Mikel should absolutely stay with us. I would not swap them for anyone. Ballack has reportedly got his one year extension. I thought if we had to sell one midfielder it had to be the German captain. With the rumours around his one year extension, that seems to be out of question.
In attack, we have Drogba, Anelka, Di Santo, Joe Cole, Malouda and Kalou. Most of us have been saying that attack is one area which we badly need to bolster if we are win anything next season. Drogba was typically blowing hot and cold last season. Anelka was slotting in the goals but he didn’t look like the one that would win us the premier league or champions league. Di Santo hardly got any time on the pitch but he did the job for me whenever he came in. Joe Cole was not available for most part of the season and I’m still not convinced if he is consistent enough for us. Malouda was everyone’s bunny until February and then we saw a brand new Florent Malouda, the one we thought we bought back in 2006. Kalou has been decent. He scored and created some important goals though he did not play much. So that’s been the story of our attack this season.
We have the players to win trophies for us. What we lack is some magic. Some world beater that would make the jaws drop. That’s why we were after Robinho. That’s why we are after Ribery. We need a player or two who would create something out of nothing. A player who would, on his own, will be able to win crucial matches. I don’t think the club is trying to replace a player because we don’t have the kind of player that we are looking for. So anyone that comes in must be a first team starter who would give a run for the money for the current bunch of attacking players. This new player could be a winger or a striker. I see that Chelsea were interested (who’s not?) in David Villa. Also pato has been dropping hints that he would join Ancelotti. So, if it’s going to be a striker then that’s a strong message to Drogba or Anelka or both depending on which formation Ancelotti wants to play. In any case, if we get an attacking player, we certainly need to offload some. Probably, it is Kalou or even Joe Cole.
With Roman’s little romance with Kaka this summer, we pretty much know about two things: (a) Roman wants to buy new players (b) Roman is willing to spend the money. That’s great news. This summer could very well be the busiest ever in terms of high profile big buck transfers. We have seen Kaka’s transfer break the world record (in pound terms) and that record could not stay for more than 2 days. Ronaldo has moved out of Man Utd.Tevez could be gone too. Scholes and Giggs won’t play this season. And none of these players have good second choices. So, Chelsea must be the favourites for next season’s premier league. I hope Roman and Kenyon make the right purchases because I think we are just two good buys away from premier league and champions league.

BUT Real Madrid and Manchester United will be favourites above us to win champs league next season. Everyone must remember what happened when they bought Zidane and also man u have one the cup season before and were in the final last season SO who could we possibly buy to counter them and hit back harder???
Real have Kaka & Ronaldo both in the bag and recent reports from Chelsea’s spanish scout suggest that they are also favourites to sign Villa, that leaves Ribbery as the only other big name in the market and if he is to move from Bayern then Real would snap him up at any cost especially with Zizu at helm now. If Real fail to get Ribbery then UTD & Barca are the next favourites to sign him, trust me it will be highly and I mean highly unlikely for Chelsea to sign Ribbery. I agree that our team is really strong as it is but a few changes are required, we need to reduce the average age and the wage bill of the squad by offloading a few players.
Deco, Sheva, Pizzaro, Belletti, Paulo, Minerio and even Carvalho and Kalou should be offloaded this season and they are likely to fetch in the region of £40M atleast and with a further £20M investment from Roman we should be able to get atleast 3 good players. Also keep in mind that Real will be looking forward on offload atleast 6/7 players this season, which could include the likes of Drethe, VDV, Robben & Huntellar. So we could get one of these players for a good price. David Silva / Zhrikov / Young can prove to be really good options for the wing, Aguero / Pato are the two youngsters we have been chasing and I think any one of them will be quite a good buy for Chelsea. I just hope to god we dont make the mistake of buying players like Pirlo and Gatusso cause that is simply stupidity.
P.S. Beckham is also willing to come back to EPL – Now I know he’s reaching 35 but if we are to think from a business point of view then having Beckz in a Chelsea shirt will bring a lot of commercial and merchandise money to Chelsea and it also attracts a lot of neautrals to the Club, we could make good money from that deal, what do you guys think??
yeah i agree we have such a good squad we just need one or two players with that flair and a couple of fringe players to cover in positions that need backing. i believe we should sell joe cole dont get me wrong hes a brilliant player and could give us that edge next season but hes very inconsistent and gets injuries so i say sell him while is still the better side of 30 and get good price for him. and i dont no whats wrong with kalou hes young pacey and like u said scores vital goals.
For good or for worse, Roman must firstly commit publicly that Carlo will stay atleast for 3 years no matter how he runs the club. Only then would be players insured and will get attracted to our club.
Get Ribery at all costs. They can´t tell we bought success this year, because Real Madrid have already outspent us and Manures are also going to spend heavily to buy a substitute. I see in Ribery a Ballon D´blaa blaa award winner. We cannot miss him and Bayern have said if they get outragious bid then they´ll accept it. Buying him is like buying 3 players at once, a decent midfielder, a striker and a playmaker. His work ethic suits chelsea.

Besides Zhirkov can come for 20 million get him. these 3 players plus once decent backup for cech is actually enough. For LB we can somehow manage, like BC said Bosingwa at LB at times of need and Mancienne or Iva can take care of RB.

If we get only one player this summer I am hoping for Ribery. He brings everything to the team that we lack. He would fit into the team the same way Robinho would have had we been able to sign him a year ago. For that reason I have to believe the club are going all out for him. Man U have also been linked to the winger. With Ronaldo gone they have a Ribery sized hole in their offense. If he is dealt this summer, the Premiership could very well come down to which team wins his signature.
Also, I hope we can keep Riccy. He’s not been happy at the club, and with Alex playing superbly it would be easy to let him go. However, if we are to pursue titles in the Premier League, Champions League, and FA cup we need depth. Three world class players at center back with Cech in the goal makes us solid contenders in all competitions.

Good article with some good points raised. I’d have to disagree about Joe Cole though, every season he is seen as the odd man out and bound to lose his place to this player or that player yet every time he proves his doubters wrong. Player of the season last season, unlucky this season, we need to keep him for sure. Kalou, as much as I wish for him to come good it’s been a while now, not really his fault as he’s really a second striker and not a winger but as they say, the great players can play anywhere and he can’t. What I’d really like most of all is for the oh so promising youth we have snapped up to be given a chance, why buy Pato and not give Di Santos a bash? why have we put up with the pre Feb Malouda for so long without giving Sinclair a proper go? and there is Stoch, and others like Kakuta. It seems to me that managers at Chelsea feel they are on borrowed time so won’t give youth a chance for fear of the sack. I hope this season sees a change to that, as from where I am sitting with have what we need at home.

I would really like to see Ribery come to Chelsea but I doubt we will get, reports are saying he wants to join Madrid. But if we do get him, I would offload Kalou. Even though I really like him, he didnt have his best season last year and he was inconsistent. I would also like to see some of the younger players coming through like Stoch, Mancienne, Woods and Di Santo. They are exciting prospects for the club and we really need to invest in our youth because we have neglected to do so in the past. I also totally agree that we need to find a good second goalkeeper. I’ve never heard of him but he is young and if he is good I’d be happy with that, he could be a long term replacement for Petr Cech.
We should get Aguero. He would make a fearsome partnership playing second striker with drogba. Also, he’s the type of player that chelsea are missing and desperately need. He is able to get past players and open up deffences on his own. He is also versatile, being able to play on the right wing. If we can I think we should get zhirkov. He can play anywhere down the left where we desperately need help. If we get these two players we should be fine. We have the excellent young left winger stoch to cover Malouda and kakuta can play in the middle as our playmaker. Both these players have excellent skill. We have mancienne to cover in deffence and hopefully one day be Terry’s replacement (though I wouldn’t mind if Terry played with us till he was 50). So the future looks bright for Chelsea even without many big name signings. We should think about getting rid of a fair few players- the biggest being kalou (too inconsistent), deco (waste of space), carvalho (good player but injury prone), pizzaro and sheva (not adapted for EPL). Joey is a keeper though.

Zhirkov doesn’t seem to like a bench role at any club. He has said he won’t join Barcelona or Chelsea if there is no guarantee of starting position. With Ashley Cole flying high, Chelsea need a decent squad player that can fight for his place and provide a genuine competition for the others.
If I were Carlo Ancelloti, I would come to Roman and tell him to get me Aguero and Ribery. Aguero is a fantastic talent that can be great addition to Chelsea. No comment on Ribery who is an incredible footballer.

That being said, we need that attitudes of our depth to be okay with watching, learning, and being a part of the CFC. So we don’t need everyone to be a superstar. I dont see us selling Anelka, i mean come on, all said and done, he did win the Golden Boot so given that and his recent ascendancy in form means we will keep him, we might need him if we dont get another striker given Drogbas UEFA ban. Di Santo I think should be seen more often this coming season, Ancelotti should work with him first from a few Cup ties and then slowly push him into our EPL team.

I really dont think the Ribbery deal will happen, it is extremely unlikely, we are just being over optimistic if we think we can land him when Real and UTD would be first in line to get his signature. I know he is an amazing player and just what we need at Chelsea but unfortunetly for us this had to be the year when the world’s greatest players become available and this had to be the year when Perez is elected Real president and UTD get a £100M kitty to spend. So keeping those factors in mind you can almost garuntee urself the Ribbery deal is light years ahead of us.

Even if he doesn’t fit into the plans then we can loan him out to Blackburn who are a very decent Premiership side, this way again he will get game time and he can develop into something special and at Rovers the clause suggests they will have to play him. Its a win win situation all over and if we can do the same for some of our other talented youngsters then Im sure in the next 2 years we can have a crop of our own talented youngsters!!

our leftback position has ashley cole. Zhirkov has said he won’t play second fiddle to anyone, so if we planned to use him as a leftback, it won’t happen, I’m starting to think barcelona is his destination. My preferred leftback is Marcelo, but then again, I’d be really happy to prmote Ryan Bertrand but Marcelo can be the left footed deadball man we lack.
Our right back position is not great, Ivanovic can defend anywhere on the pitch, he can’t attack the same way. Carvahlo would allow ivanovic and mancienne more playing time by leaving, I think he will so that leaves us with paulo and juliano after jose bosingwa which is adequate so no need for glen johnson
Im tipping Ballack to retire at the end of next season, or at least from international football. I think we should push Mikel foward into his position. We’ve all see him retain the ball from onrushing defenders in advanced positions, if he improves his attacking ability he won’t be as great as ballack but can be that box to box man we want ballack to be again. That being said, we should be looking to find a central midfielder that doesn’t have to beat defenders, but shrug them off, move past them like gerrard does. My first choice is Michael Johnson, a young english player, next on my list would be Joao Moutinho.
Our wings are our weakpoint, joey is inconsitent, kalou is a liability, malouda is just reaching the form he showed in lyon, anelka is not a true winger. Joey keeps saying he wants to play centrally, whether he does or not, I think selling Kalou and bringing in Ashley Young is our best bet, young english player, plenty of speed, two footed, beats defenders. Ribery won’t be in london,l im certain of that. I wouldn’t mind another winger on top of that but I doubt roman would splash out

Tevez in my opinion would be a great buy, because he is already proven in the EPL, and he is a workhorse. It would also weaken Man Utd. This would give us great depth, as we would still have class players such as Ballack, J.Cole, and Anelka to come on in attack. Not sure where Malouda fits in Carlo’s attack, but I’d start him on the left based on his form to finish off this recent campaign. Perhaps Zhirkov is there at the start of next season? But then again, Zhirkov was Hiddink’s guy, and now Zhirkov has stated his dream to play for Barca, so perhaps not. Ashley Young would be a good buy as well, but for no more than 20m or so. Seems unlikely though based on the inflated players market and Villa’s reluctance to release such a prospect. Please no 40m fullbacks, as long as Bosingwa is happy please don’t go after Maicon, or Glen Johnson for that matter. Ivanovic and Mancienne are more than capable. Goodbye Deco and Riccy. if the guy you are talking about is slobodon rajkovic, he is a centreback so the leftback position would not be ideal for him to play in
the new leftback needs to be fast, needs stamina to match and needs to add that extra part in attack
on that note, I will say that Maldini is set to join the defensive coaching staff, as a former leftback, and a big one at that, it makes me think that chelsea are looking to promote a leftback from within the club, ashley has come from an injury free season so the board won’t be looking for a minute sharer, just someone to hold the fort say in fa cup early rounds. Researching what we have, there is 20year old rajkovic on loan at fc twente and 19year old ryan bertrand (watch out for him in the under 21 games hopefully).

Bosingwa is worth AT LEAST £20mil, we bought him for nearly £17mil and he’s doing well, If Ribery is worth £50mil plus, Bosingwa is worth at least £30mil, I would not be surprise by this move but I don’t expect it

Roman has bought himself a £300M Yatch, so much for the news about his dwindling fortune, well if he can splash out that kind of money then no wonder we have been hearing news about Chelsea tabling a £72M bid for Kaka. Atleast his love for Chelsea is truly back and if our board can get the right player to join Chelsea (which for the 2nd straight year seems unlikely) then Roman should have no problem gettin his man or so im assuming!!
Also Inter want to sign Deco and Carvalho, well hopefully we can get atleast in the region of £12 – £15M for them, I dont understand why we have not entered the market for any players yet. I mean fair enough that Carlo takes charge at 1st July and by the time he asseses the team and everything it will take time. It seems that its gonna be another disappointing season for chelsea fc in the transfer market.
Almost all the players that we want are not interested in coming to chelsea and the players that we are not interested in are wanting in.
Lets face the stark reality that players like ribery, villa, kaka, aguerro, benzema etc will never want to come to chelsea but will choose to go to madrid, barcelona, either of the milan clubs or either of arsenal/united/ pool (three clubs who have the biggest history in english soccer)
Chelsea as a club is just not appealing to them or is it that they dont like the manner and the style in which we play???
Chelsea is a club which is still evolving which has only since a couple of years risen into prominence (mind you i am only comparing it to the other three giants of English soccer and nobody else).
We need to win the champions league (a couple of times actually) in order to attract the best players to come and join us and nobody else.

the goalie position is a hard one, you are basically looking for someone like shay given but significantly older, I know little about keepers but we won’t be signing someone who is looking to make a name for themselves, they want to be stars, not bench warmers which is why we wouldn’t be able to sign Green
leftbackwise, ashley cole missed only one game this season, I think promoting Ryan Bertrand will sort us. He is a reserve player and has ashley’s speed whereas rakjovic would be better as a centre back i think his body shape suits it more. So that is a position sorted spending no money, if ashley is injured and ryan can’t provide the level of talent we need, bosingwa can always play on the left and mancienne or ivanovic can play on the right
we need a fast winger who will open up space on the rest of the pitch. He needs to be able to cross with both feet and should be decent with a deadball. Some dribbling skill is a neccessity. My ideal guy is Ashley Young. He plays on the left for villa and does it well, he needs a talented coach to take him to his potential. He is not tiny and not scared of muscling into defenders so brings our tough mentality aswell. The major plus for me is Joe Cole. Joey played better when he was keeping swp on the bench, having no one to challenge him for his starting spot, he got lazy like Mourinho used to say. Young is good and will strive to be better than Joey, Joey will always work hard to keep his spot as he’d have a challenger. On top of that, Ashley Young is an English Talent, it will be good for us image wise to promote a young english player

Real Madrid are apparently getting rid of their entire Dutch Squad, which contains the likes of Van Nistelrooy, Robben, Sneijder, Drenthe, VDV and Huntelaar. Now this is some good news to my ears because there are some really good names in that mix. Deco and Carvalho are as good as out of Chelsea, specially after going public about wanting to leave the club and along with them we should also go ahead and sell the likes of Belletti, Minerio and Kalou. Now that means that out Midfield consists of – Lampard – Ballack – Essien – Mikel and all of them are brilliant options. But Ballack will most likely retire or be out of Chelsea by next year, therefore it would be really sensible for Chelsea to go out and buy either VDV or Sneijder as both are AMF’z and could have a bright future at the Bridge.
Some news suggets that Real are willing to let VDV go for £8M, now I consider that quite cheap taking in account he is a brilliant replacement for Deco and Ballack and at the age of 26 he still has years ahead of him. Sneijder again is another brilliant option although he would be abit expensive, also if we want to buy a forward how about Huntelaar, we know UTD wanted him at some point and they still might go for him. The guy is a goal threat and can score some amazing goals and again wont be as expensive as the likes of Aguero and Pato and Villa.
