I’m very anxious and excited. Anxious because we’re playing Juve at Turin in a make or break match. Excited because the match would be telecast live instead of the Liverpool match. You might have read it a thousand times in the last few days – this is Hiddink’s biggest test. His Chelsea has won 6 consecutive matches in all competitions which included a home scalp of Juve themselves. A 1-0 result in the first leg at home is never enough. Our away form in the champions league has been pathetic. I see that the last away win in champions league was the 4-0 against Rosenborg in 2007. We’re now in 2009.
Hiddink’s actions have spoken more than his words. Both his words and actions have confirmed what his priorities are. He wants Chelsea to win. He wants Chelsea to control the games. He does not talk anything about the playing style and all that owner-friendly stuff. He talks like a astute tactician and his Chelsea has certainly improved since Scolari’s tactic-free days. Still we don’t control the game as much as we should. After we start controlling the games, we must start dominating the games. So we’re not there yet. There’s some more work to do. But there’s no denial that Hiddink has rejuvenated the team.
Sometimes, a significant change works. It worked in Real Madrid when Ramos stepped in. In Tottenham, it was the same Ramos who had to step out. Harry Redknapp even admitted that the change itself played a bigger role than himself in the short unbeaten run just after Ramo’s removal. The change has done wonders at Chelsea. It has brought back Drogba. It has stopped the leaking set pieces. It has brought back smiles to the faces of players and fans. Unlike the Harry Redknapp situation, I’d give a bigger credit to Hiddink because I see too big an improvement in the way we attack not to give the manager any credit for it.
Tomorrow’s match at Juve is way too significant to not progress. Sometimes, I even think that Roman sacked Scolari and at that time because he saw the risk of getting eliminated in the first knock out round in champions league. For him, progressing to the next round is very crucial. It’s now a matter of pride. The last time Chelsea were eliminated in the first knock out round was in 05-06 to eventual champions Barcelona, but Chelsea won the premier league then. This time, having won the first leg at home, we must consider ourselves favourites. The big question is, can we keep a clean sheet?
If I understand Hiddink well enough, he must expect a 0-0 at half time. That must put some pressure on the Juve players, make them impatient and nervous. Chelsea might look just for counter attacks, which fine by me. The counter attack that we made against Coventry City is a classic one. Just shows how dangerous we can be in counters. I think Chelsea would play a bit deep but apply full pressure on Juve to win the ball. When we don’t have the ball, every single player must work for the team. That’s when we’ll see the best of those players with all round capabilities. If Juve were to take a 1-0 lead, I won’t be surprised to see them take the tie to shoot outs where the result of Buffon vs Cech is written on the wall.
I guess Hiddink would play a 4-5-1. It’s a little too early for team news. I think Essien will be on the bench. The back four must be Terry, Alex, Cole and Bosingwa. I think we can even start with Belletti. Anelka is still unfit and that’s not the only reason why Drogba would start. Like Hiddink said ‘a happy Drogba is a dangerous Drogba’. Now Drogba feels fully fit too.
Thank god I feel 100 per cent physically. Now I have to work a little bit more to improve my chances in scoring goals in games. It is good when you score goals, your confidence gets higher. I’m feeling good and it is important to get games, because the more you play the more you score. I was out from injury and then when I came back it was really difficult for me, but that’s football. When things are going well nobody speaks but when you have some bad or difficult moments everybody is asking why, this is football. I work and work. When you work and want to improve something good will happen to you. I kept working hard and scoring and now people will forget the last few months.
It’s very difficult to predict champions league matches. Any result is possible. Chelsea are good enough to beat Juve. Likewise Juve are capable of beating Chelsea. Chelsea can get a clean sheet or Juve can win with a two goal margin. Anything is possible. My guess is it could be 1-1. I don’t see Chelsea getting eliminated. 0-0 at worst.

hey bc, i dont think quaresma can play, he is cup-tied
“I guess Hiddink would play a 4-5-1. It’s a little too early for team news. I think Essien will be on the bench. Quaresma must get 90 minutes. ”
Quaresma cant play, cuptied, remember? hopefully chelsea will go through to next stage, =)
If Juve score first its going to be some really nervous times for me. I am dreading penalty shootouts. But I put my trust in Hiddink, I don’t think we should sit back and just counter attack. If we score that means Juve must score 3 goals to advance. Hiddink knows this, that’s why he is singing Drogba’s praises to the media. He knows that if he says wonders about Drogba then Drogba will be brimming with confidence, and a confident Drogba is a deadly one.
” BC said: “Quaresma must get 90 minutes”.. remember he cant play BC .. cup tied…. I thought we were passed this.
I think we can beat the 1-2 or 0-2
Replying to True Blue in L.A.: Guus said he wont sit back. I really like this guy, I would like if he stayed with us. We would just need a replacement for Russia.
If we score the first goal,no way the game goes into penalities and then Juve have to score atleast three to win the tie . I feel the key to the game is holding midfielders , I would start with both John Obi and Belleti and probably swap one for essien later.
Sissoko and camorenessi are out of the game so if we control nedved , the midfield battle is won..
My prediction on the team tomorrow (in the usual 4-3-3):
Cech
Bosingwa Alex JT Ash
Mikel
Kalou Ballack Lampard Malouda
Drogba
Essien isn’t ready for 90 minutes yet, especially in such a crucial tie. I expect him to make a sub appearance. Carvalho is perhaps more likely; thankfully, Juve are not the paciest of teams. I will not be surprised to see Ivanovic leave in the summer, as he is too good to be sitting on our bench. With Mancienne coming through, something has got to give, and I don’t see Alex leaving now. Carvalho’s departure would be extremely unexpected.
Seeing Deco start over Ballack, if he is fit, wouldn’t actually be that bad, as I get the impression Guus will use him more effectively than Scolari did in his latter days. Hopefully, we can see him back to his best.
Malouda will start – of this I have no doubt. With Anelka injured and Quaresma cup-tied, he is the natural choice. Hiddink is clever in starting him for the past two games, in an attempt to bring his confidence back up. All I hope from him is a solid performance.
As for the result… As BC said, who knows? I will be happy for our six game winning streak to end here as long as we go through to the next win. If we actually win, we have to do whatever it takes to make Hiddink stay at the club.
P.S. After his excellent performance in the last two games, if Quaresma doesn’t start against City on Sunday, I will be extremely disappointed. He does have his uses as an impact player, but he deserves his chance in the first XI. I was hoping that we would buy him last summer, to no avail, so getting him permanently from Inter this year wouldn’t be bad at all.
Okay okay. I’ve done this before :-)
I’ve taken Quaresma as a part of my Chelsea team because he has been very impressive so far. It does not feel like he is loaned player. I think he’s gelled so well into the team that I keep forgetting that he is cup-tied :-)
I feel very positive about this match so i predict a 2-0 victory for chelsea. Drogba to score both.
KTBFFH!
Yet another GREAT post BC! Keep it all up….just like the blue flag.
It would take something big and amazing to stop us from advancing in this tie and from what we witness in our last 6 games, we are improving by the game as a team. And a huge contribution goes to Guus and also the man behind the scene, Ray. The key to tonight’s match will be on how well we can contain Del Piero and how fast we move to ball to the last third to keep them silence. I don’t fancy penalties as I cannot remember the last time we actually won one (it would be nice if someone can recall and post the match). To be honest, I’m actually more worried about getting all our players scratchless after the match which we will win (0-1 away win).
Most media stated that it would be a fantastic achievement if ManUtd do a clean sweep this season, I would say it would be super-mega-fabulously-fantastic achievement if Chelsea does a treble with two Managers in a season!!! KTBFFH!!!
come on u blues get a positive result a scored draw or a win
I love chelsea!!! Watch my video tribute to chelsea —-> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D59pSodEmRI
C’mon CHELSEA!!

I’ve got a feeling that the Premiership teams in the last 16 this week are going to regret the carousel that has seen managers like Mourinho, Ranieri and Ramos join continental rivals with a whole book of tricks to shut out English sides in matches.
What’s the betting on Robben, Vieira or Riise turning one of these ties?
Cheers,
Charlie

im going to say chelsea will win 2-1 if mikel does not play, if he does, 1-1. Im certain that the itallians will be diving, doing anything to win set pieces and score but the desperation will undo them as i believe they have no power in the central midfield this week
obvious 4-5-1/4-3-3, im tipping ballack and drogba to score, I think ballack is going to try and do the box to box job and with essien holding and making the charges when we need, I see no reason for us to lose unless we do give away silly fouls
as for the rest of the world, the only team i expect to make it through with us is arsenal, if man utd go to penalties, much like us, they are doomed
I like to face panathinaiko at the next round.
Replying to borneo blue:
your showin ur true color=))
after following Guus team in the Euro2008 I got a feeling we will shock juve by playing offensive game. He have made us (the team) believe we can actually win and thats really great. its time now for the players to show their true colors. lets show ppl we are to be recon wit.
goo chelsea
Replying to borneo blue: ok man I see you singing your heart out for the blue!!! well done
hey how does that chelsea jersey fit… do you mind the coller. Im thinking about buy a jersey, and i was thinking about the black…. let me know guy…..
let us knock juve out first then think of the draw later on on thur or friday we should disuss draw
Cech has had 5 clean sheets since arrival of Hiddink, i hope he can maintain that today as well. Only Van der Saar has 6 more. Cech can beat that if he continues his current form.
common peter. you can do it!
and i think guys Anelka will start tonight! hope he can score few goals as well!
KTBFFH!
^ Anelka is most probably out mate unfortunately. We’re stuck with that tw@t malouda, hope he does his defensive duties well because he cant attack for $hit
CONFIRMED LINE-UP for Chelsea – Cech; Bosingwa, Alex, Terry, Ashley Cole; Mikel Obi, Essien, Ballack, Lampard; Anelka, Drogba
Essien seems to be feeling completely match-fit for him to be included in the starting 11.
Great news for us! Hope Anelka contributes more today as well.
23|blue fan 15|kdrogba 13|blue fan#1 i think u are of yr head(no afence) we cant nave 2 cf!!?? we can only have 1 vs juve
i am confid nt we will win 2 but 2 strikers is 2 much

quaresma should start in champs league
Fuckk Juve scored, Iaquinta dammed.
DAMN!!!
Cant read this – Cech flaps terribly on a deep cross that he really should be taking with his eyes closed… Chelsea look rattled and Juve can sense it!
Essien Scores … 2-1 agg!!!!
ADP was handed a penalty and scored. CECH Get your Stuff together man
yaaaaaay.,…. we win. Drogba scores again!! 3-2 on agg.
KTBFFH!!
if we can score 3(actually 4) against Buffon, we sure can progress further and win it this time.
KTBFFH!
chelsea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! are through
DIDIER DROGBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA !!
GUS HIDDINKKKKKKKKKKK
I am still mystified by handball from Belleti. What was he thinking?
could be thought of the day!
he even made me forget the handling of Ballack earlier in the game.
Although Hiddink lost his 100% record, I’m so happy for today’s result. Shall we cheer for Arsenal and MU tomorrow to make it 4 English clubs in the quarter finals again?
Yeah..:).we are in the elite 8 now…
We started the game poorly..juve take the game to us..their goal was superb…after thatChelsea became Chelsea..
There is no doubt that the freekick from Drogba was over the line…buffon knows it..he responded as he dont know…
All credit Essien he was alerted to tap in one of those Lampards long rangers..in the second half we played with more control…alex made a lot of mistakes..Ballack was giving away the possession too cheaply..Mikel was brilliant..Belletti made a hell of a mistake by handling the ball..and once again Cech beaten in penalties comprehensively..i think he should practice more to save penaties..it was embarrassing to see he diving early before taking the penalty..he always does that…made some wonderful saves though….
And Drogba does what Drogba does best…the ball from Belletti was superb…
He himself got a great opportunity late on..wasted..i though Belletti was scoring coolly there…but it was too much cool…

Replying to Zaneeb: it is shameful in deed.. God it seems like he has no clue as to how to save a penalty.
sad that belletti wasted that for real!!
guys the return of Essien will prove to be of great importance!! you just watch!! it will be and interesting last part of the season!!! FA cup CL are well within our reach!! plus we have a tactician!!! who is great!!
i dont think cech spends enough time learning the penalty takers of his opposition
i didnt like the refereeing of either game tonight
i was so angry with belletti, what was he thinking? almost as bad as scholes and ronaldo earlier in the season
i like the surprise formation that hiddink played, and it payed off, none of us would of seen that coming
if he pulls out the tricks at liverpool, we should be doing everything in our power to keep him or someone he recommends,
we missed so may chances, belletti, ballack, should have scored
but the juventus goal with trezeguet and laquinta….beautiful
When is the quarterfinal draw? Anybody know?
Quarter Finals are in the beginning of April
im absolutly delighted we are through..juventus gave a scare there..however this so called “reaction” mite not always work..therefore we need to start playing a bit better..
i was not very convinced with BALLACK tonight (even though did set drogba for the goal..slow passes, innacurate, doesnt seem to know where the ball is most times..I SAY QUARESMA IN FOR BALLACK…
ANELKA FOR ME was the one that had the perfect match..playing left-wing..and controlling that ball the whole night was superb…
drogba is getting back to his OLD ways..n frustrating those defenders…
and i do agree with TRUEPLATINUM..dont think cech seems to know where that ball goes when it comes to penalties..that the reason i always say its over for US WHEN WE REACH PENALTIES…lol
EVERY ONE DID A SUPERB JOB TONIGHT…essien is BACK …CHELSEA IS BACK…its THE NEXT STAGE NOW!!!
quaresma cant play in CL, when will people grasp that point. I think drogba’s free kick went in honestly, it was obviously plucked out of the goal by buffon. Essien did well but not great, the goal was good but he isnt 100% match fit yet, he was played to cause a crap load of congestion in the centre and thats why beletti was bought on as well to have a 451 it nearly backfired on hiddink though.
When is the quarterfinal draw? Anybody know?
the draw would be next week along with uefa cup draw. my guess is 20th march
People! My internet is down. I’m sending this from my mobile. The post will be up as soon as my internet is fixed.
Although Hiddink lost his 100% record, I’m so happy for today’s result.
I’m probably not the first one to say it but Hiddink still should have a 100% record. That dead ball shot of Drogs WAS over the line. Watch it fraqme by frame in High Def – it is fully 100% over.
Thank GOD for that Lamps shot and the Essien follow-up just moments later. So glad my favorite Blue is back – Essien is quite simply a machine!
I can’t wait soon enough for FIFA / UFEA to institute goal line technology.
Nice Job Chels! Here’s to getting Villarreal in the draw~
Through to the Quarter Final !!!!!!!!
I am not delighted though, still not the PERFECT CHELSEA. We as fans can expect more right?
We went in to the match with 4-2-2-2 formation, I suppose. The worst chelsea 35 minutes of the season. Once we went down we did try to show some intent. I still was wondering from where would the goal come from. Certainly, we could have seen some changes in the 2nd half had the Bison not scored . And that is what I like about Hiddink. Although not a good attacking play by any means from chelsea.
We defended Set Pieces really well. But were edgy when long balls were thrown towards Trez only to be denied twice by Cech. All and all a good composed and steady play from chelsea.
Player-wise it was one of the worst match for Ballack, Alex & Cech. Most grave of all, Cech has lost his decision making skills recently. Was iffy throughout the match. He should have got something on that Iaquinta shoot. The penalty and yellow card incident were really embarrassing. Good match for Drogba, Mikel, and Cole. Drogba was the hero when it came to clearing ball in set pieces. A well deserved goal for his determination. And the Man of the match for me.
Cant play with Drogba and Anelka without wingers in PL matches were a win from now on is a must.
By the way the one player who impressed me a lot was that young boy Giovinco. Man O man , there was not a single chelsea player who wasnt tricked by his speed and skills.
Hope the blue flag always flies high!!!
we played 4-1-2-1-2 no 4-2-2-2
Replying to Nick:
Are you mad? I’ll be cheering and shouting for Inter and Jose until my tonsils falls out. Always cheer for the Special One, that is until we face him in the CL final.
