Guus is turning our season. Our winning run continues. Didier Drogba continues his good form. We still don’t concede. The guy with the head gear is indeed Petr Cech. This is a superb win. This was a tough away match made tougher by the conditions. It was raining heavily, the ball wasn’t rolling all that well on the water logged pitch plus there was this noisy, hostile home crowd. This is a very more important win because Liverpool and Arsenal won too. I hear you saying 0-0 can’t be a win. But the buggers did win.
Don’t you feel Chelsea have picked up some pace? The team which was popularly called as old and slow, now looks a bit young and fast. Look at our attacking moves. We move with pace and purpose. Suddenly we look very dangerous on counter attacks. We don’t seem to congest the midfield or attack any longer. Which is why we create a lot of chances. We get a lots of shots. For long periods of time, we were all over Pompey. Guus did not have Anelka yesterday but when he is available, I want him to try 4-4-2 with Anelka and Drogba. I’m sure he must want us to start scoring the second or third goals too. I know Man Utd nicked a dozen 1-0 wins. Let that not be a benchmark. As of today, they have a better defence and their 1-0 might be a little more comfortable than ours.
From a zero-chance, zero-shot 90 mins, we have improved to create chances and get shots on goals. We have also improved to score goals and win 4 matches on the trot. The next level must be to score the elusive second goal that could kill the game. 4-4-2 could be that solution. With Essien coming back, there is a very strong case for going 4-4-2. Now we are in a position where we don’t have to use Essien as a defensive midfielder or a defender (remember those days?). Essien can come back as midfielder or an attacking midfielder alongwith Lampard. Both Lampard and Essien are box-to-box midfielders. They can be getting a shot on goal on moment and throwing themselves to block a shot the next moment. When they both are playing together, we may not need a defensive midfielder. My idea of a 4-4-2 is Drogba and Anelka as strikers. Essien and Lampard as central midfielders. Quaresma and Kalou as wide players.
Coming back to this match, I thought we defended rather well. There were some nervy moments but we defended very hard. It was a very good team effort. We were very determined and we wanted to win this match. Did you see how Drogba and others celebrated that goal? They wanted it and they knew they deserved it. Drogba’s celebration was fantastic. And you could see that at the final whistle too. Cech, Terry, Drogba, Lampard – all of them.
We play Coventry City in FA Cup this weekend. Now I get a feeling that we would play them like we should. What I mean is, I don’t think I would be wondering if it’s Coventry City or Barcelona that we are playing. We should beat them comfortably. I’m just waiting for the second leg of the Juve tie.

I want to see Essien and Quaresma play at least 45mins of this game. Stoch should play. We need to rest some players in anticipation for Juve away.

——-di santo—–drogba———
for subs i want to see essien and q come on. the 3rd can be used or not used, preferably maybe to give drogba a breather or terry
pompey should not have been in the game as long as they were. i want to see a similar choice of players like against watford. i want some reserve and young players to get a chance to play. coventry beat blackburn who was dreadful so they should not pose a problem with a team like above with linchpins still in the lineup (terry, lamps, drogs). we need to see how well 4-4-2 works since we really need to run that instead of guus’s hybrid 4-3-3 with anelka on the forward left wing.
if anelka’s toe is fine by the weekend then give him an outing or have him come on for di santo or vice versa (with anelka not playing that much to prevent him from getting hurt, need him for juve)
Damn espn and start sports for not showing those matches but that cant stop me from my enthusiasm to watch chelsea fixture and that too when they are on a winning run..so thx to justin tv i enjoyed every bit of it in the early hours of wednesday
peter cech!..wow..there is a reason y he is considered one of the best in the world and he surely proved that.. drogba looked hungry and i never thought i would say this but for a change malouda looked impressive on the left flank!
there were pple in the chat room at the streaming site and my God were they going at each other like crazy!!…lol..Chelsea fans, manU fans, arsenal fans and liverpool fans!…but once drogba scored every other tom dick and harry were off to anyother chat room! and it was all praise for chelsea after that :)
I hope we can continue this…For me if we win the remaining premier league matches then I wont regret much abt the title…the question remains is it too little too late?
I suppose RA got alittle late in bringing in GH
Hail Chelsea!
>>The team which was popularly called as old and slow, now looks a bit young and fast.
Oh I don’t know if I would go that far.. I think we are are breathing in quite a bit of the “New Manager Bounce” air atm. Let’s put wins in against City, Hotspur, Newcastle, Bolton, and Everton and then we can talk about a complete 180 turnaround.
However that aside – Pompey played at home, in bad conditions strictly to draw (for the most part) and we still won it. Great patience and determination.
What I will give Guus credit for this very moment is his perfect substitutions. The 1st sub to counter Pompey’s 4-5-1, the 2nd to provide better pace and more byline options on the right (which almost worked) and the 3rd to slow the game down in the end.
LFS seems like a distant memory but let’s be realistic – our odds are extreeemly thin at coming away with either the EPL or the Champ’s silverware this year. (Don’t get me wrong I am cheering every step of the way) But I think our realistic shot at silverware this year is the FA Cup. I would love to play ManU in the final and get some sort of redemption back from the heartbreak of last year’s Champ’s trophy that we nearly had our fingers on.
Here’s to the next 6 or 7 games that will either put us back on the map as the team who were slated to be Worldbeaters at the start of the season – or done with this season entirely waiting to find out who the next boss to take over is.
i want to see the team rested for the match against juve. This shuould be our team for coventry:

–Ivanovic–Mancienne–Carvalho–Ferriera–

———Essien—————–Lampard———

When others say the Premier League is out of Chelsea’s grasp, I beg to differ:
How many points ahead are they ? 10 ? ( that’s assuming they win the next 2 games ). OK let’s say they do and are 10 points ahead.
ManUre play both Aresey and Liverfool on the way , so that means at least some points shaved off, maybe 4 or 2 , or if we’re real lucky : 6 or at least both teams will play for broke and for pride’s sake and maybe break a few ManUre bones, so complicating the red run-in.
I mean their run in against some of the teams fighting regulation of which there are plenty in the congested near to / in the drop zone. That could mean another 4 points shaved off.
So they could be only 4 or 5 points going into the last 4 games. And the pressure will mount . From there on who knows ?
And why couldn’t Chelsea win the CL this year ? Essien and Carvalho are nearly back ! Chelsea nearly won it last year !
I know I may seem to be wildly optimistic but I am and chose to be so. Cos in love and life if u don’t set your goals high, they never seem to come about do they ?
And with heads high and finishing the season on a high note ,reaching for that red scalp and tryng to tear it off, trying rather than whimpering and whining like Liverfool and Aresy it sets down the tone and determination for next season which I believe will surely be one to savour !

Now that’s a proper defender, eh?
I have with delight noticed that the players work rate has increased 1000-folds. There’s real gut and determination in the way we play at the moment. Even though it was a very hard and difficult game yesterday, I just had the feeling all the way through that we would win. And that brings back nice memories, because that was the way it used to be when watching CFC play. So just keep it up, then I’m sure munure will start to crack and the EPL silverware will again be within our reach.
By the way Quaresma did brilliant, he will become a CFC key player very soon.
Replying to DanaBlue:
Luckily players are not allowed to carry guns in the pitch. Haha…………….Alex did a wonderful job, may be thats why we won, haha…..
Something like Barcelona must happen to MU.Some one must stop them , crashing out of Champions League will hurt them to much and will affect them on EPL.
We got to give Cech some great props, he made superb saves. And to be honest I thought they were going to score when Krancja got loose on a counterattack and he got a pass from Crouch but luckily he shot wide. I am very delightful with the win, but I don’t like Ballack´s nonchalant play. He gets lazy at times and complain all the time to the ref. just get on wit it son. DD was wasteful. Am very happy he got the winner but he should have scored earlier when he had a few chances. But at least he is creating chances. THE sub for Q was great cause he did do some damage. And gave us both pace and option, more then we had before he entered the game.
JT did well to organize our defense. I really love the hustle play of Ashley Cole. The condition of the pitch made it touch, and I would say it did favor them more. Cause we couldn’t play our usual nit passes. Kalou was kalouless=)
Malouda? Still no one understands him or his play on the pitch. Not the fans or the players. Or is it just me who feels that way. Wit his talent there would be something useful we could get out of that boy.
Jose B, needs to work on making the right decisions. I am looking forward to se Michael M in his place for the FA game on Saturday.
Now that we got this win under out belt, lets get an easy win against Coventry and the move on to dump out Juve from the CL. And I can’t not understand why would couldn’t win the champions league. Sure we aren’t in the best of forms. But we are heading there and we actually have a manager who knows what he is doing. If we make a great run to push man u for the titled that will be great enough for us. But the CL and FA should be our priority right now.
/K
I am very delighted with the win and I hope the winning run continues.
KTBFFH!
i don’t really see the portsmouth game as a ground out win for the reason we had alot more ‘sitters’ than they did
as for the coventry game, don’t get too complacent as they knocked a youth fuelled man utd side out of a cup 3-0 last season, I don’t know how much they have changed but I think we should field an entire team of substitutes and if we haven’t made any headway, we can put in some starters for short run outs
i like that picture of alex doing some martial arts on crouch
im very much relying on jose mourinho to sort out the red devils. I have made predictions and I don’t like eating my words. Thing is, we travel to our leg at juventus with a goal over them and we now have the ability to use the away goals ability
man united may be at old trafford but for every goal they conceed, they will have to get ahead, they cannot draw, that is pressure and we all know how angry man utd gets under pressure, gives away fouls etc
Meanwhile guys Sampodaria thrased Inter 3-0 in the Ferraris stadium in a wrestling match. hehe.
I think its a warning for Guus as well. Coventry city may not be a walk on the cake, but then We play Juventus later in the next week as well. So i wish he plays our defence intact and makes few changes in midfield only.
When others say the Premier League is out of Chelsea’s grasp, I beg to differ:
I’m not saying it is out of grasp – just that it is not very realistic. Look at our total points at this time compared to the last 4 years. We are lower than any other total since Raneri was Boss.
Don’t get me wrong – I want us to win / begging for us to win ~ but this year for the most part I think the damage is done – I’m not putting even odds money on us pulling anything in the EPL higher than 2nd and we will most likley get knocked out of the CL before we get to the final (just on ods along and how we have been knocked out with much stronger teams in the past).
True.. Anything is possible in CL but EPL title this year is over.
That being said please Chels~ Make me eat my hat!!!
the one thing i need to say is that malouda didnt do that badly for the game, created some nice combo work with ashley cole. I think malouda is the type of player that bentley is, not a true winger, more a wide midfielder who controls the pace of the game. Still not chelsea level but in a 442 he works very well.
Now if essien does come back (at least 2-3 weeks) he will take over ballack’s spot but first he will be slowly bought in as a way to close off a match, chuck him on when we winning in place of lampard and let ballack go up forward to allow him and mikel to do the work in the back. As he gets confidence he will take over ballack’s role.
Quaresma did well coming on from a sub role, judging by that i say give him the shot in the FA cup since he cant play against juve.
For the fa draw i would go for

Hey.. where is Denver..?
BC,
I’m really glad you pointed out the way the players celebrated the win. I noticed the same thing and it made me feel really good about it. You could tell they really wanted to take this match, their body language and passion they showed made me proud.. Hiddink has made some big changes. The team mentality is different, I’m really confident in their Champions League aspirations. I believe we’ve had the club all along to compete for the CL crown, now its all about the intangibles and approach, Hiddink seems to be the answer to that. Looking ahead to the FA Cup match, I’d like to see some young players make an appearance, it would also help with some of our regulars getting a weekend of rest before the vital 2nd leg in Italy. I heard Essien may not be rushed back, and is supposedly going to be held out for another couple weeks. I don’t know the truth behind that, but I’d like to see this lineup for Saturday:
——Mancienne—-Carvalho—-Alex—–Ferrieira—–
———————–Belletti——————————
—–Stoch————–Essien—————–Quaresma–
————–Kalou————–Drogba——————
I usually never get what I ask for, but playing 3 matches a week can take a toll on the players. And I value the CL more than anything else right now, we should be fully prepared, rested, and focused.

Even i wished we played our second tier of players, but looking at the game how Sampodaria thrashed Inter, i´dn´t fancy that. We may change the midfield and strikers, but defence should remain intact. I don´t want Chelsea to take chances in cup matches, simply because league title is almost unrealistic (although we need to push Manures to fullest so that they won´t win everything). FA cup and CL are the only things that we may win this season.
so my formation against coventry would be,
———————————cech————————————–
Mancienne————-Alex—————-Terry—————A.cole
———————Belleti————–Essien—————————-
—-R. Quaresma————————————-Lampard————
———————Kalou—————–Malouda—————————
subs: Hilario, Ballack/Di Santo, Drogba, Anelka, Stoch, Bosingwa, Mikel
If we take healthy lead in first half, i´d love to see Lampard come off for Stoch, if not we could sub Kalou/Essien/Belleti, Malouda for DD and Anelka and go for 4-3-3.
IwasMissingJose
Regardless whether or not we win the league we should strive to finisht the whole league campaign positively.

Replying to IwasMissingJose: why the hell would you start Malouda as a forward…?? lol what ever happened to Di Santo??
also if you have been listening or reading the news… Essien porbably wont be on the pitch. A.cole should be rested for Paulo, also rest Terry and run out Ivano….
For sure we are going to win against Conventry for sure.My team selection would be:
Cech
Ivanovic–Mancienne–Carvalho–Ferreira
Stoch—–Ballack—Lampard—Quaresma
Di santo—–Drogba.
I would wish di santo and stoch start as I know Stoch can turn around a game with the pace our team used to lack on the wings.
Di santo should start with a first team striker to rapidly improve his development.Waiting however for his first goals tomorrow.
Sub:hilario,Anelka, Belleti,Mikel, Bosingwa,Alex,Nouble
In the summer, I hear five + old players would be out,as the team builds a new young looking and fresh team.
From sources:Malouda,Ballack,Mineiro,Deco,Kalou(if he wants) and others.
I would hope we bring in these guys:
Di Maria far better than ben Arfa, Hamsik classic player to have on our team and Acquafresca and Zhirkov.

Two defensive mids for “indifferent” forwards…LAMPARD wide on the wing…KALOU and MALOUDA…. explain reasoning….Now ROMAN ABRAMOVICH he could sell DROGBA 16m… BRIDGE 12m… DECO 8m… BALLACK 8m… ALEX 8m… MALOUDA 8m and SHEVCHENKO 10m and
ASHLEY COLE 12m and JOE COLE 14m

We could Buy…QUARESMA 22m… BALE 18m… PEDERSON 8m… any other suggestions…

Poor, poor Ivanovic. First he had to wrestle for a place with the likes of Terry, Carvalho and Alex. Then when Carvalho, Alex and Terry took turns to get injured/suspended, along comes a younger, less experienced Mancienne who got above him in the pecking order. I doubt he’ll stay with us next season.
Replying to denver:
Hi Denver,
I´ll break your questions to parts and answer as follows:
1) Why Malouda and not Di santo at the striker:
DI santo will be a great asset in future. Until now he has never featured in important games, and he hasn´t played more than 10 minutes in any games. So, to put straight, he lacks experience and i don´t want to risk him in such an important game. He may however come as a sub in the last 20 minutes, or in the start of second half. I know the entire World hates Malouda right now because of his form, but this guy has got pace, and he can be too hot for coventry to handle, or he could assist Kalou to score goals. I´d trust Malouda more than Di santo in this cup-match.
2) Essien probably won´t be on the pitch:
yea probably won´t be, but it doesn´t mean he can´t be. He can play atleast the first half (if he can play full game for reserves, he can play atleast a half against coventry). this match will help him become match fit. By the way in my formation he has a cdm/cm position so that he won´t have to push himself too much. He´ll help in holding midfield in the absence of Mikel and Ballack, who are absolutely necessary for the game against Juventus.
3) A. Cole rested for Paulo:
Poor paulo is out for the season, and we have no other than A. cole to fill that gap.
4) ivanovic:
I was shocked with how Sampodaria mutilated Inter in the absence of their 1st choice central defender Maicon. I don´t want that to happen to Chelsea. Chelsea should play the defence intact as it has played until now. Manciennie can come for Bosingwa, but central defenders gotta be Alex and Terry. ivanovic can have enough games in league, as title slowly gets out of our reach. But i won´t rule him out for LB in this match though.
I want Chelsea to win atleast FA cup this season. I know Chelsea can win CL as well, but who knows what might happen. Btw my formation has 5 changes to our starting line up, so that should do its job.
comments always welcome.

With a fairly solid backline, we should be able to allow our hungry youngsters to show what they can do, i favour ivanovic at the holding role because he is hungry to play but if he doesn’t cut it, we can always move him around with belletti or sub in ashley
i dont want lampard, bosingwa nor ashley to play but lampard and ashley can be on the bench. I just don’t want to risk any more injuries, if things really aren’t going well at half time, we can sub out whoever is underperforming and im sure we’d turn it around
im not worried about this game, just the team selection
Paolo Ferreira is out for the Season ;(
Brani came to Chelsea as a versatile defender..so i would put him on the left back..Belletti at the right..(for going forward he is better than bossi)his passes are very good and got a wonderful right foot to strike..
Malouda on the left and q on the right.and deco in the midfield if he is fit..

why???
60th minute of the match against Coventry….Drogba scored a beauty in the 16th and Queresma, who came on in the second half, looks lively! The only down-side of this game is having Malouda on the pitch (terrible decision-making all game). Hopefully we will score another soon and give Essien some much needed game time!
Update: Essien is on =)
Deadly drogba hit again……………………………..
what a superb goal by alex, the whole build up was absolute beauty, we still have to improve quite a lot, but atleast, players dont look so much clueless when they are in possession. and the bison is back which is a good news, ricky is also back.
@ 49 denver…………………… he damaged some knee ligament or somthing like that, he s a good utility player and never complains,
chelsea took care of business.
hightlights of the game, M ESSIEN ofcourse. soo nice just to se him on the pitch.
DD did his thing, he was e-on man of the match.
Ballack nonchalant again=(
malouda its safe to say EPL dont suit him.
JT and alex did well in the back as well as fan favourit Ashley cole. Great assist from Q to the second goal. alex looked like a striker when he finished that=).
now lets carry on our winningspree ova the second leg of CL
have nice weekend ya´all
/K
The game started around 5 am here in the United States and I didn’t wake up till 8.15 so i missed everything. Anyway, It’s good to see us progress and see Drogba on the score sheet once more and essien also got to play.
I’m glad we sacked scolari, if not, we might have lost or drawn this match.
KTBFFH
Denver,
he is out b/c of knee ligament.

Replying to Xerxesk:

stoch DNP (coach decision)!!!
rotation not good, we do have juventus next week after all. Well, guus probably sees today as an important game to win as realisitcally, fa cup is the only silverware i think we can win this season. Champs league……just no, a very logical no, premmiership, is a possibility, we have finished all our nasty games now i believe so man utd have a chance to drop points, even still, we need them to drop 10-7 points.
positives to come out of the game, im happy to see alex getting in on the counter, helps to keep attackers fresh and shows another reason why i prefer him to carvahlo in most cases. I believe drogba has scored in every game since hiddink took over, thats saying something
we’re grinding out the wins, \i think our shallow squad accounts for our low scores, but we are finally shutting out opposition so I think we are building
dammit, man utd scored 2 goals while i was writing this

FA cup is very important for chelsea and every chelsea fan thats why we diddnt rotate the players. and we actually have a good chance winning cl, allot more than the pl.

not at all surprised. even i was going to miss it coz the game was early at 1:30 pm german time, and how many times has Chelsea played an early game? I think this is the first fixture of such kind. Luckily i checked the time when i woke up at 1pm today and didn´t miss it ;).

and don´t worry about CL right now. We´ve got a clean sheet and a goals lead. Looking at our current defence, its almost 80% sure that we are through, and looking at the coach we have i´d say its 100%. even a 1-1 draw would do its job. By tuesday we will have anelka back, essien back, carvalho back, alex is in good form, terry in good form, mikel and ballack are okay. i don´t think fitness would be a problem in this match. We´d be easily through, players just need to be focused, thats all. But i´d be happy if we just park our bus and make few counter attacks to keep the pressure on.
