We’ve played enough of those ‘defining matches’ of the season and have mostly come second best. As much as I hate cliches, I need to say that this too, is in fact, is indeed, a defining match of this season. More than points, the pride is at stake. That of Scolari than that of Chelsea. Big Phil gets yet another chance to show that he can win a big match. Sad that a world champion has to prove this. But as they say, you’re judge by your results.
I’m surprised that no one has ever used ‘chokers’ and ‘Chelsea’ in the same sentence yet. Tomorrow, we get yet another chance to show that we still have it in us to beat the big teams. I don’t sound too optimistic, do I? Well, I can’t fake it. I haven’t seen anything since the Man Utd defeat that would make me optimistic. Let me say I’m not pessimistic but certainly not optimistic either.
Liverpool are in a mini-crisis. They have drawn the last four matches. Contrary to the opinion of the press, I think their poor run of form has nothing to do with Rafa’s outburst against Fergie. That’s just a coincidence. Liverpool are losing the plot because they’re just being Liverpool. They’ve been doing this every season. This time, it has coincided with Rafa’s attack on Fergie. Four consecutive draws is bad but they’re on an unbeaten run of 12 premier league matches. They ended our run of 86 unbeaten home league matches. We can claim a petty little revenge by ending their mini run.
Rafa is a cunning manager. There are very few managers in the premier league to whom I would use that adjective. He is very cunning. That’s how his team is too. They can be cunning and cheeky. They can be deceptive, both ways. Rafa has been preparing for the Chelsea match. He put first choice players like Kuyt, Riera and Alonso in the bench in the mid-week match. He subbed off Gerrard and Torres in the second half. He did not even let Robbie Keane board the bus. So that’s 6 first team players all set to unleash against Chelsea. And precisely, these are the players that win matches for them. On the contrary, we have played our entire first team in our mid-week game.
Rafa’s game plan could be that he wants to beat Chelsea and for that he can pay a price of a draw against Wigan. A draw against Wigan and a win against Chelsea is 4 points. Even the vice versa is also 4 points. But they are not the same. You never want to drop points against your direct rival. These head-to-head matches are exactly the best opportunities to put some daylight between you and your rivals. We’ve been playing our mostly first choice team for God knows how many matches! We played our full team even against Southend home and away, Ipswich and Middlesbrough in the mid-week.
We have the full squad available for selection except Joe Cole, Essien and Carvalho. Terry should be fit. Kalou had a niggle but he should be ready too. Scolari says Ashley Cole feels tired because he has been running around so much but not so much to miss tomorrow’s match. That’s exactly my worry. I don’t want tomorrow’s match to be the one where Cole’s fatigue shows up.
Last match, I think I did a fair job of predicting Scolari’s team selection. This time, I’d tell you whom I would play tomorrow. Cech, Bosingwa, Terry, Ivanovic, Ashley Cole, Mikel, Lampard, Ballack, Kalou, Anelka and Drogba. It is 4-4-2 and it’s gotta be 4-4-2 if we are looking to win. Both Drogba and Anelka should start. If we play any other formation, Liverpool would defend at ease all day all night. Bosingwa and Ashley Cole can cut down on their attacking runs a bit. Liverpool do have intelligent players who can use the space to deadly advantage.
Last time we played Liverpool, in October, Bosingwa was shut down by Liverpool. He made more than half a dozen intercepted crosses which also meant lost possession while we are attacking in numbers. In fact, Chelsea on the whole, made about 15 crosses that could not find a Chelsea player. In short, Liverpool won the aerial battle hands down. I do not think we have improved heavily in the air since then. For this reason, I’d hope Chelsea to cut down on the crosses and play it along the grass. We had 2 shots on target all match, one each from Lampard and Kalou. That’s another thing to keep in mind.
One thing we have been missing of late is the tempo. In this match, we should play with tempo. When we have the ball, we need to scare them, make them take cover. That’s how we can beat Liverpool. Slow build-up against Liverpool almost would never work. They are very strong side tactically. Indecisive passing around in the final third would not take us anywhere. We need to play with tempo and at right places we need to take quick decisions of to pass, to run or to shoot. Right or wrong, things should happen quickly enough to beat them.
As I always say, the efforts matter as much as the result. Sometimes things may not go our way, especially in places like Anfield but we should put in a 120% effort to win the match. What I don’t want to see is a repeat of home leg against Liverpool. I’m not talking about the result here. The perfomance. What I don’t wan to see is a spiritless, spineless effort with no clear cut chances created. I don’t want to see a repeat of Liverpool (home), Arsenal (home) and Man Utd (away).
This season I think most of my score predictions have gone wrong. That’s because Chelsea were exceeding my expectations for a shortwhile before surprising me with a serious mediocre performances with some disastrous results. With much experience and wisdom of this season’s Chelsea and Liverpool, I’d predict a 1-1 which may not really do us much favours as Man Utd keep winning. If Chelsea wins tomorrow, I’d put my money on Chelsea beating Man Utd for the title. Call me whatever, I’d even dare to say it loud.
I’d end with this simple quote from Super Frank:
Anfield is a very difficult place to win, but we have done it and we have done it quite well.

I hope Drogba score this match , it will be the solution to his trouble
I don´t care if we win this season at all, but tomorrow´s game is a must win.
LFS is never gonna play a 4-4-2. He would have done it by now if he felt it would help him (wether it really will or not).
He’s goes in saying that this is just another 3 points. I’m not sure what he is thinking here – this is sooo much more than 3 points. United are unstoppable right now and if we can’t show that we are at least in the running by tonking Liverpool in their own house then we are most definitely giving up the EPL race.
BTW – anyone catch the AV / Wigan game? – man was that a tense 0-0 tie. AV deserved 3 points and just missed it (and good thing too – as they would have gone 2nd above both us and pool).
First of all it’s the first time that i post a comment on this web or watever is this…..Man i’m readin last 3 or 4 posts of you and i must say it you are absolutely right ! you have such a wonderful posts…
about the game let’s hope that we win and we must win !
P/S. i heard that Ivanovic was officialy transfert to Fiorentina !!!? is it true?!
To further your optimism BC, Chelsea have won only been beaten once in their last five visits, winning three of them. Plus The Kop is a very quiet and nervous place at the moment and we are on a roll – 4 straight wins!!

Looks most likely to be a draw which for the most part is pretty standard when you think about the Big Four clashes. But one thing is for damn sure is that we cannot afford a lose no matter if we play brilliant;y or if we play badly! United are riding an impressive wave at the moment but all great things do come to an end.
My feeling is that this season may be a direct repeat of last season but we can nick it for sure boys. United will set a record 3rd title in a row which has never been done in the modern era of the Premiership.
Blues 2-1 a hopeful result, but to be honest a 1-1 draw is more the likely but not necessarily detrimental to us as United still must face Liverpool and Arsenal at Old Trafford. Oh and did anyone else notice how it is always a penalty that gave United the victory today? They played great, don’t get me wrong, but a 1-0 win over a tough Everton side is still not enough to convince me to concede to their “greatness” this season!
4-1 Liverpool
I really hope scolari will play like this
Cech
Ivanovich, Alex, Terry, Cole
Mikel
Bosingwa , Deco(Ballack), Lampard Kalou
Drogba
you see Iva is adefensive minded but bossie is both so giving him such a positin will stop lots of attacks on that flanks as well as create a lot od offence from bossie and iva this way the Drog will just shine

Cech
Bosingwa=Terry=Alex=Cole
Lampard=Mikel=Ballack
Kalou=Drogba=Anelka
Sub:Ivanovic,Belletti,Malouda,di santo..
I think we will win tomorrow.BTW i want this to be our formation
Cech
Bosingwa Terry Ivanovic Cole
Kalou Lampard Ballack Malouda
Drogba Anelka
I agree with most of you . LFS will not play 4-4-2, if he wanted, he could have done earlier ( even Maluda , left sided winger is there now).
I think he will start with Deco tomorrow over Maluoda and that will be the only change.
Given our form against big 4 teams , our inability to defend set pieces & liverpool not losing at anfield for 22 games, I think even a draw would be a good result for Chelsea ( though we would be out of EPL, but I feel we lost the plot in end Nov through dec when we & liverpool should have applied pressure on Man U). It would have been worse, had Villa won today, because then either one or both would have been behind Villa also.
Before Middlesboro, I think we never even opened the scoring for 4 – 5 games , which is concerning before liverpool know to defend much deep
It is Feb and Champions League time – Real Madrid seems to be recovering well. Juventus have lost 2 games in a row and are now 6 points & a game behind Inter.

9 years back United won three in a row 98,99,00 titles. But again, our definition of modern may differ.
Folks – My mistake for the earlier duplicate comment.
sup ppl
got a good feeling about the game tomorrow. I hope DD gets a start cause if he dont that will send the wrong message to the fellas out there. We need to field the strongest 11 tomorrow and kill Lpool for what they did to our swagga/record in the first meeting.
Its funny how things roll urway when your are flying high, Man u wins the game after gettin a penetly and it wasnt the best of penelties by cr7 the GK should have nicked that one. Anyways lets take care of business fellas
if we score the first goal tomorrow we´ll have a great chance of goin home wit all 3 points. otherwise am afraid it will be a goalless draw.
but wat da heck, I hope for a 3-1 win wit drog ballack and kalou scoring.
Whats the deal wit ivanovic? he is set to leave? anyone?

BREAKING NEWS: Robbie keane has been dropped for tmr!!!!!!!!
Just a quick note on the transfer side of things:
Chelsea has signed turkish under 17 international gokhan tore from bayern lever keusen for an undisclosed fee(his contract would have ran out in end of june this year). Not many youtube clips of him but from what ive heard he did very well in under17 euro comp where turkey finished 3rd behind spain and france. One of the stand out players in the turkish team and seen as a prospect by many people. Has a -9 potential in Football Manager as well(lol), but in all fairness FM’s scouts are generally pretty accurate, meaning that he has the potential to be a very good player.
Attacking Mid that can play on the left, doesnt really shoot but more of a true winger, similar to younger deco when he played for porto. He is 17 and could be quite a decent player, kakuta rates him highly since he played against him in the u17 comps.
Man U always got favors from the ref.. The ref will always try to find way to give spot kick ..i say WTF..
This is ridiculous
I’m not settling for a draw. We need the win tomorrow for all the reasons you guys have said. It can and will be done.
Though I think I may disagree with you, BC. I don’t think Drogba and Anelka should start the game out there together. I do think Drogs should start over Anelka and then Scolari can either bring Anelka in to help Drogba or relieve him. I just don’t think there’s enough fluidity when the two of them are playing together. Which brings up what you said about tempo. We need that tempo or that pace. We had it in the beginning of the season, but we’ve seemed to have lost it. If we can get it back, nobody will be able to stop us. I believe that the only real way to find it, though, is to stop playing the same starting XI. It would would help by resting players and at the same time allow for different partnerships to be tested. We need to put players on the pitch that can work together seamlessly. Perhaps Scolari thinks the same thing and that’s why it feels like he’s favoring people by nationality. Perhaps he thinks they’ll play together better because they think the same. I don’t know, I can’t make excuses for him. For what it’s worth, I also think Di Santo should’ve gotten more play time these past few games.
Either way, we need this win against Liverpool and I very much think we’re going to get it. I’m giving it a 2-1 in favor of Chelsea.
Tough match is today our decider.
My pick for today:
Cech
Ivanovic Mancienne Terry A.COle
kalou Lampard Ballack Malouda
Drogba Anelka.
Sub: Stoch,Belleti,Kakuta,Di santo, Mikel,Taylor,Alex.
Stoch needs about 20-30 minutes minutes if Drogba is playing shit so he takes the
right wing and kalou shifts into striking role.Di Santo should come on for Anelka.
Kakuta should play this match not for less than 10 minutes he’s a real playmaker and
an excellent player(just not experience but would pick him ahead of Deco).Kakuta is our
only incredible playmaker for now.Lets make the best out of him in this match. He can open
up the Liverpool defense make pefect passes and can score a match decider.Lets play him.
Ah I forgot to make a mention about the Liverpool’s strength which happens to be Chelsea’s weakness now – SET PIECES! Rafa would have something up his sleeve for the set piece situations!
All you guys in here who think that chelsea could possibly win this match are just a bunch of foolishly optimistic blokes…..its not about being pessimistic but its just about being more sensible, logical and accepting the facts of life….we are just a bunch of drained out aged players…whatever could have been extracted from this side (which was a good side once upon a time) has been extracted by mourinho and grant respectively……there is noting more or a new dimension that this chelsea team has to offer……they have no pace, so style, no grace and they are way too predictable…..its gonna make no rat ass difference whether you play drogba and anelka or even di santo together…..the result is gonna be another loss for chelsea or at the best if we have a decent day then could be a stalemate draw…..neither do we have any exciting youngsters in the reserves that we can look forward to taking chelsea ahead in the future…neither is abramovich interested in spending any money to acquire fresh talent….nothing is being done to take the club forward and we like dumb asses are hoping against hope that sumthing great is gonna happen to this club…..how freakin dumb can a person ever get…..the title race is already over and man utd have ensured that they sweep it making it third in a row…….and here we are sitting like morons and hacking our brains over a lost cause…
Common guys just forget about it and think off a new topic that is worth a discussion…as for this topic please ur self as much as you can but noting is gonna happen and after exactly 8 hours everything would be self explanatory and everybody would have recieved their answers….
We are due for a win against a big team. Maybe this will be the day.
I don’t care how we win. Deflection. own goal by Mr Garragher, Anelka poking a goal in with his butt, goal front scuffle, a blantant foul, an offside position, a shot from the 200 yards out, a penalty from play-acting a broken knee , I don’t care !
This is a day that we should win !
If not ,then we’ll take care o’ that on the morrow !
( anyway whoever died cos of losing football game ‘cept some brazilian refs and turkish fans ?)
But now it’s excessive, super loyal, half-witted, over-optimistic loyalty.
fat Rafa wants a title showdown being cute and clever with Wigan midweek , I say let’s give him one at least here on the blog.
All the Anfield faithful after today will be the Anfield flop-followers when Chelsea put them nearer to their rightful 5th place
I dare u fat rafa to play flowing attacking football, u foul fellow !
Keep the blue flag flying high and down with the revolting reviled retro red pretenders !
I think everybody needs to calm down here.We are definitely not going to win at Anfield. The following are the reasons we wont win against Liverpool:
1.We cant score there at all. This is the truth.I havent seen any goal scored at Anfield by Chelsea.Champions league semi-final 1-1 Riise own goal.Same year league match 1-1 Lampard penalty which was not a penalty. There hasnt even been one clear cut chance created there as far as I can remember.Nothing at all.I would be happy even if we trouble their defence a little bit.
2.Our players are scared.I see this all the time.Anfiel is a very difficult place to go.Extremely difficult to score for us.And the crowd is their 12th man.It will matter a lot. They will play a huge part.
As far as I am concerned I dont think we can win here.It would take an exceptional performance to beat them or some controversy or some liverpool mistake.I would want a result in this game.A draw is going to be a disaster for both teams.Thats like the title being gifted to Man Utd courtesy of Chelsea and Liverpool.
I really fear this could be a repeat of the Old Trafford game.
Sorry guys,I know I am being quite negative but it is true that we cant score at anfield(according to recent history).
Just hoping for the best result.
BLUE TILL I DIE.
And to echo Denis Wise when seeing the “This is Anfield” sign : ” Yes we are afraid of a team that has not won a match in 7 games”
Replying to Sunny:
since u aint feelin the current topic..why dont you bring up one yourself???????????????????
Lets go chelsea

What is you said is true for some time. the year before last we lost the EPL game – 2-0 and CL game 1-0.
But before that it was a 4-1 win over 10 men Liverpool at EPL and I think 1-0 in the first season of both Jose & Rafa.. It will need very special effort of players and I think Didier will be missed very much in the first half because Anelka will not given any penetration.
Rafa may play 4-2-3-1 team , with xabi and maschareno as holding midfielder, kuyt, gerrad and rierra/babel and torres..
Article from Daily Telegraph –
———————————————————————————————————————————-
How did Benitez outwit Scolari at The Bridge?
When Liverpool ended Chelsea’s unbeaten run at Stamford Bridge this season the tactics used by Rafael Benitez worked perfectly.
Without the injured Didier Drogba, Liverpool’s back four dropped to the edge of their own area, comfortable that Chelsea’s attackers would not beat them in the air . By playing so deeply, it also denied Nicolas Anelka the space to make penetrative runs behind Liverpool’s defence, making him less effective.
Benitez also crowded the midfield area by playing two holding midfield players and getting his wide players to come infield when the ball was on the opposite side. This gave Frank Lampard, Deco and John Obi Mikel no room to play their intricate passing combinations that had destroyed many teams at the beginning of the season.
Although it allowed Ashley Cole and Jose Bosingwa plenty of ball, their crosses came from deep positions, against which Liverpool were well equipped to defend.
Liverpool’s counter-attacking strategy also proved effective with Robbie Keane up front and Steven Gerrard playing in a free role behind him.
Whenever Chelsea attacked, those two found space away from their markers in wide areas, particularly when Cole and Bosingwa had advanced. As soon as Liverpool won possession they immediately tried to find Keane or Gerrard, while Albert Riera and Dirk Kuyt, Liverpool’s wide players, raced forward in support. The energy and tactical understanding of those four players was outstanding.
Such is the conservative nature of Benitez, I’m sure he will use similar tactics today; hence the omission of Riera and Kuyt from the starting line-up at Wigan. However, he will need to get his team to play 15 yards further forward if Drogba and Michael Ballack are selected for Chelsea. Both have the capability to get on the end of crosses from deep.
How do Chelsea deal with Gerrard?
Gerrard ‘s credentials are well known – he knows how to find space, he has the dynamism to get away from tacklers and the vision to play defence-splitting passes. He also has a great understanding with his wide players, particularly Ryan Babel. As soon as a wide player comes infield to support the striker, Gerrard drifts wider to receive passes and deliver pinpoint crosses. Unfortunately for Liverpool, Fernando Torres is lacking the sharpness to capitalise on Gerrard’s incisive passes at the moment.
Chelsea will not man-mark Gerrard but hope that Mikel organises those around him so that the England international is never unmarked. Mikel must deal with him centrally, either full-back when he drifts wide and one of the centre-halves when he breaks forward. That may sound simplistic, but to be successful it requires immense concentration and good communication. Mikel is key today.
How do Liverpool cope with Lampard?
Liverpool will need to be equally aware of Lampard. If his marker drops off, to give himself time to track Lampard’s forward runs, Benitez knows the Chelsea midfielder has a potent shot from distance. If his marker gets too tight, Lampard has the intelligence to run beyond him into the box. He is also brilliant at manipulating the ball sufficiently away from opponents to shoot with either foot.
So Liverpool, just as they did at Stamford Bridge, need to negate him by reducing the space between their midfield and defence and staying narrow when Chelsea attack . The centre-halves need to be aware of his runs into the box, midfielders need to press him as soon as he gets into shooting positions and covering players must recognise when he is about to evade the first challenger.
Does Scolari gamble on Drogba?
No matter how good those two players are , the most important player today is Didier Drogba. He makes the difference between Chelsea being a great team or just a good one. What a shame then for Scolari that he cannot be sure about the Ivorian’s attitude, because if he is picked and motivated, Benitez cannot gamble on defending so deeply. Liverpool can be as compact as they like but if they allow crosses to come into their box and Chelsea get players to make runs in support of their centre-forward, Benitez will need to change his game plan. Will Scolari be able to inspire his temperamental forward enough to justify picking him?
hope for a win today. We are going to win and that’s a must.Hope Scolari makes his substitutions well.
With some few time left, if we are winning, he should bring on a defender and take off an attacker. And if
drawing or trailing, he should bring on a playmaker or a pacy winger like Stoch to move the ball forward.
Guys anyone knows Frank NOuble a 6 foot 3player in our team.17 years and 190 lbs.
This guy is an excellent and fantastic prospect, can play on the wings but is a true clinical finisher much better than
Bojan and Pato and even Balloteli runs at 10.9seconds in a 100m dash.Great player is an Ivorian-English just had a call up to the U-17 england
team.He should get his debut soon.Scored 4 goals in four matches in the U-17 Milk Cup. 12 goals in 14matches in his last previous youth
matches.Greaaaaat prospect to have.Gotta give Taylor a run of games in the FA Cup, one of the most promising keepers in the World.

And TrueBlue a BIG FAT zero on your Chelsea history. Chelsea have won on 3 of their last visits to Anfield in the League out of five, losing one and drawing one.
And for the pessimists amongst this article – TODAY IS THE BEST TIME TO BE PLAYING AND BEATING LIVERPOOL!!!!
update from bbc
1512: Early team news from Anfield… Chelsea are unchanged and will play with Nicolas Anelka as a solo striker. There are three changes for Liverpool – Lucas, Yossi Benayoun and Ryan Babel are dropped with Xabi Alonso, Dirk Kuyt and Albert Riera coming in. Perhaps more significantly – Robbie Keane is left out of the 18-man squad amid rumours at Anfield that he’s on his way back to Tottenham, with Aaron Lennon coming the other way. Blimey
