If you read any headline like ‘Chelsea back to winning ways at Stamford Bridge’, don’t believe them yet. Scolari made some crucial corrections in the team selection and formation for today’s game. He started with both Drogba and Anelka. He dropped Deco. He also dropped his thoroughly worn out and found out 4-1-4-1. The moment I saw these changes ahead of the kick off, I was sure that we’ll get the three points somehow. Common sense just prevailed.

Drogba scored early and settled our nerves. We have really missed these early goals. A goalless first half would have made got me really worried. Then, Lampard scored a fantastic goal. He’s been due a goal and this one is a special one. Amidst all the congestion and chaos in the box, look how much time and space Lamps gets to control the ball and to chip it over the goalie. Superb goal.

A victory always papers the cracks. Invariably. While we can enjoy this moment, we should not allow a win at home over West Brom let us think that we are well and truly back. But for the two goal moments, we were pretty wasteful in attacks. Both goalscorers, Drogba and Lampard were guilty of not scoring further when easier opportunities were there. You simply can’t deny that we have better penetration of defence, with Drogba in the team. Anelka was impressive as well with his action in the final third. It was nice to see Anelka work hard to create chances for his team mates. Anelka certainly has a powerful and accurate long shot in his weaponry. It’s a pity that he doesn’t try those ones nowadays.

One thing I don’t still understand is the value of Anelka moving all over pitch and losing possession like he never wanted the ball. Why would a left wing player walk around in the right midfield? Is he given a free role? If yes, I can’t believe this. He is not a type of a player who can be given a free role. Absolutely not. If no, he is simply being indisciplined. This was not the first match where he was found wandering in unusual zones. I would not have a problem, if he is trying to help his team mates or he is trying to interchange positions with someone else. He does none of that. He loses possession and he can’t even win free kicks. My next piece of advice to Scolari is: Restrict Anelka to his zone. He has neither the pace nor the creativity to cover too much ground.

On a day when Liverpool and Man Utd won their matches, I wouldn’t have worried too much about how we notch our win. But I also got to watch the matches of the other teams in top four – Liverpool, Man Utd and Aston Villa. Their performances have something in common while ours is the odd one out. They seem to play with tremendous confidence which we now lack. It’s been the case for the last few weeks. Even in the weekends were all top four drew, our draw was the shoddiest of them all. That story continues when we win too. Frank Lampard has spoken to the press on Chelsea’s problem of lack of self confidence. It just shows when you see Chelsea on the pitch. That’s why I’m not too convinced with this win. West Brom didn’t really test us. They didn’t really challenge us. A winning run that includes a scalp of Man Utd would heal almost anything.

I’m very happy with the fact that Scolari made a few changes today. I thought he was playing Deco when he was very poor. Scolari dropped him. I thought 4-1-4-1 is the reason why our game is very tired and predictable. He changed it to 4-3-3. I wanted Drogba to start. He did and scored too. I wanted both Drogba and Anelka on the pitch. They were there. I want few more things from Scolari. We should play 4-4-2 with Drogba and Anelka as strikers. Give Belletti some starts in the midfield. Check if Wayne Bridge on the left midfield is any useful. Untick the ‘free role’ box for Anelka. Encourage players like Lampard, Ballack, Anelka and Drogba to shoot from distance. Did anyone think we play better when Belletti plays instead of Bosingwa? Some rotation here and there is very healthy and also keeps the opposition on the toes. Give the young players a chance when we have an unassailable lead, at least. That’s it.

Fulham next. I’m looking forward to this West London derby on Sunday. Fulham have a great home record this season. Should be a very interesting match. Anyway, with Scolari coming back to his senses, I’m feeling lot more relaxed and confident.
