News Roundup | Terry, Drogba, Cech, Grant

News round up after quite some time. I’m not going to talk about those transfer rumours about Dos Santos and the like. I would wait to see them develop a little more. There’s news about Drogba and Terry playing the champions league final, Cech’s future with Chelsea, Grant’s show down talks with Roman and guess while watching which teams did Essien fall asleep :-) Read on.

It would be an understatement if I say I’m bloody relieved. Both Drogba and Terry would somehow play in the champions league finals. It’s not a disaster if they don’t play but the odds would be lot different if they are not there. In Alex and Anelka, we have superb replacements, at least on paper. But I want to see Drogba and Terry play in the finals for two reasons. One is these guys hate losing, they’d do their everything within their might to win the trophy. Another is, whether we win or lose, they deserve to grace the pitch when Chelsea play their first champions league final ever. Being the architects of the ‘Blue Revolution’, it would be terribly sad if they are unable to play in the finals.

Here is Drogba confirming his participation:

I took a blow to my knee that was operated on (back in December), and it hurt at the time. I put ice on it immediately. But there is nothing serious. I will be at training this week. I have spoken to him [Terry] - he will play in Moscow. No-one wants to miss this gigantic match, the match of our careers. That’s the case for me anyway.

It’s nice of him to confirm about Terry too. While Drogba has clarified this way, Grant does not sound very knowledgeable of the situation. While Drogba was saying ‘there is nothing serious’, we’ve got Grant saying ‘don’t know how serious’.

We haven’t had training today nor yesterday so we will have to see at training tomorrow how they are but John Terry I think will be okay. With Didier Drogba, I don’t know how serious it is but I think he will give everything to play in this game.

Quick trivia: Saw that image of Drogba & Terry? Can you spot the match in which that picture was taken?

Didier is all geared up for this champions league final. Is that because he wants to win for Chelsea or because it would improve his CV ahead of his rumoured move to AC Milan? Let him contribute to the win, irrespective of th personal mileage he would get from it. Drogba was upset that we lost the league title and he knows exactly where we lost it.

Losing those eight points [Villa, Everton, Spurs, Wigan] has been massive for us. It is far too many for us to lay claim to being champions. It is certainly proof of too much complacency and a lack of concentration on our part. Each time we had the result in our hands but sometimes we mentally finish games before the final whistle. Manchester United deserved their title. They have been rewarded for their consistency. We have made too many mistakes, including on Sunday when we let Bolton equalise 30 seconds before the end of added time.

That was bang on. I wonder how we could repeat that mistake four times, including one against Bolton in the final match. Those were not primarily technical errors, those were a matter of discipline, awareness, complacency and concentration. Okay, you let in a late goal and then the manager talks to the whole team about how to prevent it next time. It happens again. And again. And again. Surprise. Again.

This week almost every paper carried a ‘Cech to quit’ story but there is also a denial statement from Cech even on the official website. Cech’s agent could not have been more clear when he said there are top European clubs looking for Cech’s signature at a very high price. Cech’s denial was very emphatic. He had cliched stuff like ‘my focus is on champions league final’. Also he says that he hopes that the club will sit down with his representatives for contract extension discussions at the appropriate time. The moment someone talks about their representatives, it can’t be an outright denial right? Or is it another age old gimmick to help his agent on the negotiation table, without upsetting the fans? He has been getting 50k pounds a week which, if you consider his worth, what others are getting at Chelsea, what he could get at other top clubs, is not very high.

I believe Cech is one of the top three goal keepers in Europe, who is not at his best at the moment. His 07/08 season was the worst I’ve seen Cech perform. I’m not trying to say he was poor. He is simply not at his best. Compare his performances in 04-05, 05-06, 06-07 and 07-08. This season he has done more blunders than ever before. Some of them have been very costly too. But that should not stop him from getting a much improved contract at Chelsea, which he deserves. He is certainly a ‘must-keep’ player and I’m sure all efforts will be made to keep him.

Among other papers, Telegraph reports that the talks to be held between Roman and Grant on Friday would determine if Grant would stay as Chelsea coach next season or the champions league final will be his last match as Chelsea manager. It’s hard to believe that such a sensitive decision would be taken five days before one of the most important nights in Chelsea’s history. I’ve also learnt that, with Roman, I can expect anything.

Did you know that Essien slept off while watching that explosive champions league semi final between Barcelona and Man Utd? I’m sure the UEFA cup final tonight between Rangers and Zenit would be more interesting. I’ll be watching the match rooting for Rangers!

lol @ essien. on goal.com it says that he thinks chelsea play boring football.
50k a week is how much evra or carrick or even sidwell wants-
and roman wants torres from the scousers for 50mill
quaresma or any decent winger would be really good to improve our squad
our purchases last season were complete rubbish–hopefully roman and avram will have a better
gameplan this time

@BC

I Don’t think drogba in any case will stay next season…….he question is who replaces him…….i think cudicini will move for new pastures and hilario’s contract runs out.
there is an interest in steppe guy from belgian league.
belletti,TBH are definite outs……..wayne bridge may also look for more playing time……our defense is settled in any case as ferreira provides cover for ashley and ryan bertrand has an excellent loan spell at norwich.
in midfield makelele may go if any offer comes in[i think he will go]………….
two definite starters are essien and mikel…….that leaves one slot for ballack/lampard…………i think lampard might be allowed to go and ballack allowed to stay for further one year till his contract runs out.
there is a definite interest for “joao moutinho” of sporting lisbon…….portugese media are a buzz with stories and the news was on wiki before being taken off by sporting/chelsea as it’s a closed affair like nani/anderson/bosingwa…….wiki reported joao’s agent has confirmed a 20 million euro deal……..i think we will get a definit news in one week……..wiki can be edited but the writing looked genuine in the manner it was reported.no need to tell it’s off wiki now.
joao moutinho[do i see you smiling!]is a.no8 type of player in fabregas mould.
strikers is a different story

Drogba openly saying that he went to meet Milan guys last year…if this is true I think we r really unfortunate to have such a player in our rank…he has shown total disrespect to club…
Chelsea almost sure to sign Barca’s Dos Santos…

Any truth about Barca Dos Santos joining us soon? It will be a good replacement for SWP if we sell him soon. He is young and has a lot to offer on a big stage. The Sun rumoured that Chelsea officials have agreed terms with his parents and are in talks with Barca chiefs. Hope this is true.

Joao Moutinho in Chelsea? brilliant midfielder, avery creative player and runs kilometres during 90 minutes a future world class players still only 21.
However, will he get the playing time that he gaets at Sporting of Portugal? It is no good only to go and get playeres and then they dont play, how can anyone improve? look at Ivanovich, what happened to him? not a unique presence in the first team since joining. If you read the editorial in Mundo deportivo they talk about Dos Santos, but the only problem Dos Santos had in Barca was lack of first team appearances, hence all this talk about him leaving, I will doubt that he will leave Barsa, Guardiola is one of his admirers.

@BC
“Also he says that he hopes that the club will sit down with his representatives for contract extension discussions at the appropriate time. The moment someone talks about their representatives, it can’t be an outright denial right?”

Spot on, for Cech’s representatives to be involved another offer(from another club) might be on the table, so if Chelsea matches that offer and extends his contract he stays otherwise he leaves.

Talking about his self-confidence Lassana Diarra has said:

Maybe because I was with Mr Mourinho. When I was there he spoke with me, not like my dad, but he explained everything to me. This is why, when I am doing so well, I think back to some of the words he said to me two or three years ago. I hope he (Mourinho) gets a big team and good luck to him. I remember him telling me when I was at Chelsea: ‘You have the quality, so just believe in yourself. You are young. If you work hard your time will come’.

The only joy (so far) I got from this season was knowing that even with a no-name manager, Chelsea still finished ahead of Anfield Historical Society! Yes, I’ll give Grant some credit for that.
By all means, Roman MUST do whatever it takes to keep a solid core of players. This core includes: Drogba, Essien, Lampard, Terry, Carvaliho, Cech, Joe Cole. Around that core, solid players ought to be kept: Ashley Cole, Ballak, Mikel, Kalou, Anelka. Makalele has been fine over the years. But, if he wants to walk, so be it. I never liked Sheva too much. Didn’t see much of Pizzaro. Malouda is a “?”. SWP just didn’t become the next Robben. I don’t know why we got Sidwell. Ferrera is okay. So is Alex. Ben Haim can go. And I wish Belletti had a few more years left in him.
The most important person to keep is STEVE CLARKE! I just don’t see our best players wanting to play under Grant for another season if he is not there. In fact, I believe that win or lose the CL, Clarke should be named manager and Zola hired as his right hand man by the first of June. For being a good stand in manager, let Grant have his desk job back.

looking back i think the biggest mistake has been salary figure of sheva and ballack. 130 K per week salary for a player who doesnt even starts a game?? ridiculous. That enormous amount of salary has urged everyone who is performing better to be discontented and ask for salary rise. how long can chelsea handle such demands? i think chelsea needs restructuring and this time no inflated salaries. board has got it wrong this time with sheva and ballack.

LOL……..Anelka has something to say and quite opposite to what we believe.
what do we make of this????????

The French striker has compared the Israeli to his former coach at Real Madrid Vicente del Bosque, a man who guided Los Blancos to Champions League glory in 2002.

“Grant is good for the players because we don’t feel the pressure. He is very calm and very shy. When he speaks to the players, you feel confident,” said Anelka.

“Of course I hope he stays. Everybody does. He knows what he is doing and that is why he doesn’t speak a lot.

“When you see him from inside, you feel very confident. You know what you are doing. Of course it would be good for him to win but also for the players.

“Del Bosque was shy as well and didn’t speak a lot. He wanted to play football, he knew what he was doing and we won with him. They had the same style. They know football, they know what they want.”

Now KALOU………….LOL

Finally, Kalou was asked about the man who must decide whether to select him at the Luzhniki Stadium - Avram Grant.

The 22-year-old described how his game has benefited from working under the Israeli.

‘This season I played more on the left side, with José [Mourinho] I played more as a striker, so he tried to put me in one position and improve there.

‘He talked to me a lot in training and there are a lot of things I can improve, that’s the thing I didn’t have before, I managed to defend and attack as well. That’s something more I bring to my game.

add to that……………..mikel rated him as “perfect” for CFC and terry has openly supported him.aND i fORGOT Joe.
I Think majority of have missed lampard’s stance on avram whose representative thanked avram for his supprt to the player[and mind avram was the only individual named in the statement] in the release on official site on his mother’s departure.
add to that hugs[clearly not fake] by lampard and essien after 2nd leg against loserfools………….cech has been clearly supportive of him and notably none of cfc player.

that said hope people will give him credit for whatever he has achieved and hopefully he will still be pushed upstairs though i won’t be whining if he gets one more season.

TBF Weren’t you the one that said you won’t support Grant anymore and he should go. Weren’t you the one who admired JM and said later on that you got enlightened later on? will get another enlightenment about Grant? should we wait till then?

I can keep about 10 - 15 players happy. That’s never a difficult thing. Like Grant said, he is in a win-win situation. Either the ‘horse or the king’ would be dead. I want to see how he does once the luck runs out. I saw a fair bit against Bolton at home.

I support Drogba. He has served Chelsea as much as anyone else. He is 100 times more valuable to Chelsea than Grant.

I don’t know yet. I have a contract. You have to be prepared, because when it’s like that someone goes, someone stays, someone comes.

The German press interviewed almost evey player from Hamburg and they all said, very good things and were supportive of Huub Stevens.
Their season was not that bad considering the squad they have, but he got replaced by Jol Martin.
The players do rock their boat, if any player in chelsea says different then they could be marginalised, or even not play in CL league.
So the comments of some players are irrelevant, they have to look after themselves first and foremost.

Ricardo Carvalho leaving? I read in the spanish press that real wants him to play alongside Pepe another portuguese CB, probably the best CB in europe right now, but real is getting all their money to buy C Ronaldo on a 90 million euros deal, so I dont think Real will go to R Casrvalho this summer. They just got Villa another 20 million euros transfer, and what a player. They are after Aguerro of Atletico Madrid so I dont think even Real has that mnuch money to go for Cravalho.

I am so scared knowing that we might lose some big players. they are not easy to replace. the new intake players will not adapt to the english from the first game and this will affect our chances of winning the league next season. I dont know how chelsea will prevent this. it is hurting reading rumours like Calvaho is unsure about his future. If lampard, drogba and calvaho leave chelsea then the core of chelsea is melting so rapidly.

I dont think Drogba will leave or Carvalho.
Mourinho is taking so long to get a club that they will not join him, and Mourinho in an interview in Portugal said that he will take his time, rather than joining an inferior club, he wants a top club to fight the top honours.
Top clubs they all have their own managers for next year, unless something drastic happens to Inter Milan, if they lose the Serie A, then maybe otherwise I can see Mourinho taking a manager place maybe in Christmas. This will to late for Carvalho, Drogba and Essien.

shevchenko and ballack are no longer our top earners………..it’s terry and lampard s on par with ballack and sheva due to season hike lampard gets.

Oh yes Drogba did say that he would join Mourinho, 1st in Barcelona and then Milan, the same F Lampard , Carvalho and Essien.
Mourinho was very much geared to take control at Barca, but by 1 single point the board went to Guardiola, meanwhile Milan and Inter were in the cards too.
Mourinho talke to essien and dogbra when he went to africa to comment the ANF championship.
There are still rumours that Drogba still does not talk to J Terry as he felt J Terry was behind the sack of J Mourinho, and probably is true.

the players that we have to keep for the next season are:Cech,JT,Essien,Ballack,J.Cole,Riccy .. for Lamps/Drogs/ for me would not be a big problem .. i know that Lamps&Drogba are great players but if they dont want to stay i’ll sell them rather to keep them unhappy , i would replace Lamps with either RVV or Diego or even Barry would be good option .. as for Drogba i would replace him with David Villa or Super Mario Gomez .. but one player that i would like to see at the Bridge next season is definitely Ricardo Quaresma .. so my dream team would be:

————————————-Cech——————————————–

————Bosingwa————Carvalho—————-Terry————–A.Cole——

———–Quaresma————-Essien————–Ballack/RVV/Diego——-J.Cole—–

Drogba did not say this NOW. How did you assume that he said this before this important match. You seem to question his commitment. That’s bad. If there is one player who gives his best, wants best for Chelsea, that’s Drogba.

Even if he had said that yesterday, I have no problem with him. He has been great this season. It is because of him that we are in the champions league finals. He is always being doubted and ridiculed (even by Chelsea fans) because of two reasons. One is he is black. The other is he is a JM admirer.

By the way, check your facts. Go find out when exactly Drogba said that statement.

On the other hand, Cristiano Ronaldo has raised doubts about his Man Utd future yesterday. Now that’s what I call being irresponsible ahead of an important match.

rodrigo palacio( with a new haircut) and mario gomez…period..anelka, kalou and di santo..thats a good enough strike force for me..the only thing missing maybe will be that big game mentality that drogba has..but this strike force will be young quick, versatile and tactically sound…plus we can acquire the required players by the money we will get from saying goodbye to drogba..though the other option is to keep didi!!

Now it is clear that Carvalho will move after champion league final,If Ricky and drogba donot not want to stay here then they should move, Ricky was one of our consistent performer for last few years, so it will be a big loss(than drogba) but ivanovic is good replacement for ricky,we also have Alex ,ten Benham should be sold.Richard Dunne will be available in transfer market, he will be cheap , but a decent defender with EPL experience. So go for Richard Dunne…..

I don’t want Chelsea to miss out on Auguero like we did on Torres last time…Abramovich must flash all his money power to get that guy…if he goes to Liverpool I will cry..no matter if Athletico doesn’t want to sell him Roman should do a Corleone:
I WILL GIVE THEM AN OFFER THEY CAN’T REFUSE…
ah..power of money….I like it….

@49. Arun CFC …if ivanovic walkings into the team Alex will be pissed…i dont thin k ricky will leave… but if he does leave, Alex is a head of Ivanovic in the pecking order, we will try both of them out in the pre season and see how they preform with terry
Ivanovic seems much more quicker than Alex though…but lest see because Alex is used to the EPL now while Ivanovic is now…(dont know why he didnt get a run out…. even in the reserves or something)

of course newspaper got this story 3 years back and decide to keep it for the day they may use it to unsettle drogba and cfc by publishing it now…….he has been nowhere near his last season performance for us………period

*Even if he had said that yesterday, I have no problem with him. He has been great this season. It is because of him that we are in the champions league finals.
