Chelsea FC Premier League Review 07/08 - [Adam Mikhail]
Chelsea Football Club has finished the 2007/2008 Premier League season with 85 points and in second place. I think this is a fully deserved second place for the club. You could argue that it was a poetic-justice that we conceded the late goal to Bolton to take us off level with the champions, Manchester United. The fact is simple: we weren’t the best team over 38 games. We had our ups and downs and our inconsistency was perplexing. When Chelsea FC were at their best, they were the best. Manchester United, Arsenal, and Liverpool were no match. This was confirmed by the defeats of all these sides in the end of the season. Had we been able to mimic these performances in even the majority of our games we might be flying the blue flag and calling ourselves champions, but that is not the case.
For some reason our offensive production this season as almost been scary. Not scary in a good way, scary in the way that its unbelievable how bad it often was. We were goalless against Aston Villa, Manchester United, Arsenal, Fulham, Blackburn, Liverpool, Barnsley, Schalke, Valencia, and Olympiakos. The last few weren’t in the Premier League but it gets the point across. The goalless games don’t do justice to the entire season of dross. Rarely were we constantly threatening, looking goal-bound, or creating chances. I don’t entirely understand why either because we have the players, maybe it was just the motivation at times. We’re going to need some new players this off-season and Essien better be in midfield next-year, a 4-4-2 might help as well. Here’s the most telling stat: 20 games out of 38 this season scoring 1 goal or less. Unacceptable, absolutely unacceptable for a team going for the title. 2-0 Jose Mourinho always said, that’s the aim.
To be honest the lack of goals don’t really bother me that much. If we were winning 1-0 every game and had the title, I wouldn’t care at all. If the team is only gonna put enough output for 1 goal, they better hold that goal and not give up the lead. We gave up the lead several times this season which ultimately cost us the title. Had we gone for the 2-0 in our games we’d be first place with some points to spare. I think the glimpses we received during the season of great football hurt me pretty bad. We’re shown how great we can be and shown that we won’t allow ourselves to do that.
On the same note as giving up leads, we can look to our defense for a lack of concentration. The Chelsea defense that scared the world is long gone and we’ve set the standard for conceding late on instead of scoring late on as was the case last season. Hopefully the signing of Bosingwa finally strengths up our right-back position. I don’t know much about him to make any true assumptions. The individual performances of the defense weren’t necessarily bad, it was usually the defense as a unit under-performing. Tal Ben-Haim also single-handedly gave up goals with his brilliance; he’ll be gone by the start of next season for sure. The set-play defense was abysmal throughout the entire season, starting with the Birmingham opener.
This article shouldn’t be entirely negative because 85 points and second place aren’t as bad as some would have predicted if you told them almost on entire team spent some time on the injury list, suspended, or international duty. It was only after the African Nation’s Cup ended in February that Avram Grant was able to pick and sustain a roster that had no holes in it. If you took out the likes of the players we missed for some amount of time (I’ll leave out a few I’m sure but here goes the a list: Carvalho, Terry, Lampard, Ballack, Essien, Mikel, Drogba, Kalou, Shevchenko, Malouda, Cech, Cudicini) in the other big clubs, they would have drowned very early. Arsenal’s injury list at its peak was minuscule compared to ours and they collapsed after some were sidelined. We can thank our huge squad for keeping us in the race even when we were damaged and incomplete.
Even more damaging to the Chelsea campaign was the dismissal of the legend manager Jose Mourinho. There was certainly a period of remorse in the Premier League when Jose left a team that adored him. The appointment of Avram Grant was as controversial as any moment in the entirety of the Premier League and rightly so. It can still be argued that Avram Grant was not qualified enough to take over a team that is striving to become one of the world’s top clubs. The Chelsea fans were and some still are disgusted with his tactics and general stature. I, however, won’t put the blame of a trophy-less season on the shoulders of Avram Grant. After all, this is a results oriented business and nobody can argue with how far we’ve come since the 7th game of the season. We were in with a real shout for the title and nearly got it. The advancement to the UEFA Champions League Final also in my mind waivers another season for Grant in my opinion. I still standby saying he deserves a chance to buy some players and start rebuilding in the offseason.
For me, the Barclay’s English Premier League Season 2007/2008 is one to forget. Our sometimes heartless performances have not left an impact in my mind as did prior seasons. The season was one of few highs and a lot of lows. Not everything was a controllable factor and sometimes luck played against us with injuries, suspensions, and managerial troubles. We fought like dogs during our matches and grinded our the results. There are some things I will not forget, however. Beating Manchester United and Arsenal when really needed to at home was something really special and unforgettable. Seeing Michael Ballack beat United from the spot in the 86th minute will be a glorious memory for Chelsea fans and an infamous one for United supporters. The team continued to give us hope through our results down the stretch of the season until the very last game at Bolton. There are 12 weeks until the start of the next season, a season that I have hope to champions once again. We will start rebuilding. It will surely be interesting to see who Roman Abramovic opens his checkbook for. Keep The Blue Flag Flying High.
Look out for an article assessing the player performances throughout the season!

For me, the season is definitely not the one to forget. From the deep hole at the beginning, through all the problems with injuries, African cup, etc. up to the second place with just the score difference up to the last round… I cannot help myself, I am proud on what Chelsea achieved this season.
Nevertheless, when it comes to Grant - he is a good coach, but there are better ones elsewhere. And if Chelsea wants to be a top club, it needs a top coach. There have been many rumours that Avram’s tactics is nothing more than the legacy of Mourinho. I disagree, but on the other hand, there would be much more originality and courage if there was a world-class coach at the helm.
My tip for the summer:
Avram returns to the sports-manager post “on his own request”. Frank Rijkaard becomes our new manager.
Belletti leaves the club, as well as Sheva and Pizzaro.
Chelsea sign Benzema, Huntelaar or some other young attacking star.
Make wows to finish his career after 2008/9 season.

I’m also proud of what Chelsea has achieved in the Premier League. I am not however proud of the manner in which we achieved our success. I’ll easily forget the Premier League, not the entire season, namely the Champions League.

If we need to wrest back the title we need to become FEROCIOUS..thats the ONLY pill…if we continue to be satisfied with 1-0,2-0,2-1s, good defensive display, some odd attacking performances with 6-0 wins then we are not going anywhere…we have to admit that SAF has raised the bar and this young Manure side is only going to be better and they r ready with more cash which will further improve their ranks(though they have avoided injuries to major players..if Ronaldo si out for 4-5 matches they would definitely loss the title)..we should take a leaf from SAF that when we were enjoying a vice-like grip after first 2 titles he came up with determination and gust and broke our stronghold…we also need to do same to them now…we need to be ULTRA RUTHLESS,MURDEROUS,CRUEL to our oppositions now..
and what’s needed to be done…I think we strongly miss pace and youth in our midfield and attack…all of our strikers are around 30..we need to infuse young blood hungry for success at highest level…and then there is perennial problem of creativity missing, no matter many of fans here don’t satisfy with it..pacy wingers is need of the hour..Kalou,Malouda don’t cut the ice…SWP is waste…we miss Robben and hence need smilar replacement…Ribery can be one…and do get Auguero to play just behind main striker….he will certainly do wonders to our attack….

LOL it was not my article. Credit should go to young Mikhail Adam. How can you expect ‘me’ to be unbiased? By the way, I did mention already that Grant has certainly over-achieved or I have under-estimated him. But that does not mean he is the right man for the job. Even if he is to win the champions league final, I’d want him to take a different role in Chelsea than the manager role. He should stay with Chelsea though because he’s got himself familiar with players, the system, the managers etc and that should be leveraged.
As Adam pointed out, I too think that we have become a weaker unit this season. In attack and in defence. I guess statistics will help my argument but even otherwise having followed Chelsea I could see that we have become a weaker unit. Grant has all the support from Roman also all the money he wants. If he is to stay as the manager for the next season, that might mark a new era for Chelsea and we would either go down or become better. It’s decision time for Roman.
Rijkaard is a good coach but his team won’t be fierce and forceful. To be successful in the premier league these days, some amount of brute force and ruthlessness is required. I’m not sure if Rijkaard can inculcate that in the new players that we might bring in. Except for the double winning season in 05-06, Barca did not impress. Of course, they play the best football but they seemed to lack the killer instinct that’s required for champions. Multi million players will come with enough skill and talent. They need that killer instinct, ruthlessness and some brute force. That’s what the manager needs to do. I’m not entirely convinced if Rijkaard could do that, with what I’ve seen of him. Anyway, if he is appointed as the Chelsea coach, I’d be more than happy.

Bad news. Aguero does not look like leaving Atletico in the near future. He said this to BBC:
He has a contract with Atletico that runs until 2012. Even if he is available, he is going be very very very expensive considering his age, his performance, his potential and the length of the contract with Atletico.

Priority targets next season
____________________________
1. I dont care if no one agrees, but there is no need for a massive overhaul. CFC has already got enough names on the paper, and only needs proper manager who motivates to bring out the best of team. Afterall, a team finishing second is not the one which should go for new brand.
2. Change the style of play, Get more creative in mid field. Change to 4-4-2.
3 @1 and @2 indicates that Grumpy is not the man. Get Rijkaard and he brings his style along with him!!!!!
4. Offload - Malouda,Pizzaro, TBH, Sidwell(lack of chances) — Level 1 crap clean up
Monitor - Anelka, Scheva, SWP, Sinclair, Ferrera, Bridge — Level 2 need clean up
Retain - Drogba ( … he is the best , dont lose and spend millions on another player)
5. Only Ballacks or Lamps in starting 11. Essien should be the first choice.
6. If not enough and Abra is icthing to sign, then get a world class MF(….No.10) . Diego/Kaka should be front runner.

we dearly need quality wingers and 2 MFs who can unravel the stubborn defense with their tricks, skills and pace…all else is already there…and must not be shy of scoring goals….do it left, right and centre because with this new era of competition in EPL it is surely going to play imp role time and again as this season has proved….and dare I say we must plan to win EVERY SINGLE MATCH from now on..this must be sole criteria of team building…whether its Old Trafford or Emirates or Anfield we must go for a win…

Our problem has been matches at home and the reason is our undefeated unbroken record. To preserve it we some times are circumspect to attack all ends to get a win and are happy with a draw.
While man utd has taken 52 pts at home, arsenal 47 pts and we have just taken 43 pts at home. 9 pts less than man utd.
goal diff of man utd at home is +40 , arsenal +26 and chelsea mere +23 . even liverpool has taken 42 pts with a goal diff of +30 at home.
Its high time instead of boasting of our home record we start winning at home. Our record is all known in whole europe to intimidate anyone.

You heard it here first
Cech may already decided to leave, according to the local press, and they usually either guess right or know something we don’t.
It seems Atletico Madrid or barcelona will go for Cech with a transfer fee unherad for a g/keeper. Atletico is a sleeping giant in Madrdi, have been far too long in Real’s shadow, but has a fan follwoing as big as Real at least in Madrid, and they will be in Champions League next year. Also going after Quaresma, one of the reasons that Aguero does not wish to leave.
There are other players from Chelsea being targeted as potential transfers, and may well be huge surprises on the way. Spain has an advantage, like Italy, clubs have an agreement that for the first 5 years foreigner players do not pay tax neither do clubs, hence a reason Barcelona wishes to unload Ronaldinho, so £50,000 per week in Spain or Italy does mean £50,000 unlike in the UK were they have to pay tax.
And Manchester may have a shock coming all the way from Real Madrid after the CL final, expect ronaldo to go there. with the possibility of Ballack also leaving.
Deco (now thats a hell of a player when on top form) on the way to Milan. Villa and
Keita to Barca. Anyway Chelsea did get a very very good RB in Bosingwa, if you think Ronaldo has pace watch this guy running and recovering his position.

@10..thats the whole point is….y should we look for 1-0, 2-0 wins against likes of Wigan,Rovers or other team below top 6…if we think we would concede when attacking and hence loose the game then I think there is really some problem with our defense and attack both…a team like Chelsea should go all out against such teams…its only against quality ones that we need to look for grinding out results…thats what Manure does…they play ferociously against lowly teams and are cautious against quality oppositions…we also need to mould our team that way…

Chelsea in talks with, Sporting of Portugal, for Miguel Veloso and Joao Moutinho both 21 yeas old, fantastic prospects in midfield exquisite skills allied to a work rate unmatched by any other midfielders in Europe, specially J Moutinho that runs around 10 kilometres per game. But Arsenal and ManU also interested.

brilliant point…….i feel the pressure got to grant and the players when we were at SB………the undefeated home record has it’s negative point.
it reminds me of le’arse after their undefeated season where they dropped points caus of trying to keep on with their undefeated record.
@BC
Actually unless your post has grant or jose in it………your posts are actually highly unbiased…….but after deep thinking i realize everyone has some bias or other………..i have bias for sony ericsson…….that simply means in reality nokia can do nothin to impress me.
by the way congrts on your n95 8 GB………bought a k810i recently.
Riijkard is a riddle and my views are his combo with HTC is what was responsible for Barca’s sucess….they act as perfect foils to each other……one cannot instill discpline, other is a bully.
laudrup is another option…….though a more risky one if u ask me when compared to riijkard.
that leaves lippi[too old,we need a solid base for years],zola[legend but a risk] and others.

i think the following players will leave
riccy carvalho - real is short on centre backs and definitely needs one.
drogba - almost a certainity. most probably to milan
lampard - to barcelona or juventus. the recent happenings may stop him though.
bridge - some where he gets regular football. new castle is looking for a LB or may be even liverpool.
cudacini - some where for his retirement
cech - less chance but may wana go away from english football for a little safety for his skull. less chance though. also pathetic goalie kit(just kidding)
sidwell - to replace barry at aston villa.
benhaim - anywhere i dont care.
sheva - back to milan. almost certain but milan wants him on loan.
We should see a new looking chelsea next season. all things will be clear only after champions league final.

How about Dick Advocaat being the new Chelsea manager for next year?
He is going to win the UEFA cup, built a brilliant team out of ordinary players in Zenit, and they play very nice football.
Watch this window.

As I said, Rijkaard would not be a bad choice. But he should certainly keep Steve Clarke with him. Without Clarke, Rijkaard could be a disaster. Other reason is he might do well to re-unite with Ten Cate.
BTW, to be honest, I don’t want Jose Mourinho back now. Because, it would make Roman and subsequently Chelsea a laughing stock for the fickle minded decision making. Jose is gone, he was a legend, he created history and now he is a rival. I’d leave him where he is.
I’d even lure someone like Mark Hughes or David Moyes. I’m impressed with what they have done with Blackburn and Everton respectively. They know the English league in and out. They are young and hungry for success.
Anyone for Hughes/Moyes?

no other manager will bring instant success to the club as jose did. Chelsea should look for building a good team as the owner wants taking some time and not taking shortcuts. Otherwise there will always be uncertainity on managers job.take a good manager and give him time. judge the manager now on quality of football played if that makes the owner happy.
All will depend on who leaves now rather than who come. to bring in that spirit again is difficult. for me keeping riccky and cech and how mikel takes role of makalele on a primary basis is of utmost importance. Our strength is our defence. do not play with it and you can experiment with less problems.
Try to change everywhere in defence, midfield and attack at the same time and we are calling trouble. Attack is definitely gonna change next season so keep the midfield and defence intact.

Dick Advocaat is a very good manager but isn’t he too old to make a move to the English league? In his 25-year managerial career he has not managed one major club. He has not been in the big league, be it club or country. But he has done very well.
If it’s Advocaat, we should be prepared for a couple of seasons of ending at No.2 or No.3. He would take his time to get accustomed to the new league. The English league has the better competition than the Spanish or Italian leagues. He won’t have it easy.
If Roman is going to replace Grant, the choice of manager would depend on his expectations for the next couple of seasons.

I am not so sure about Mark Hughes or David Moyes.
No doubt excellent prospects and future successful managers, and also did a brilliant job with the resources available.
But the majority of Chelsea players are continental type of footballers, not so sure how would they accustom themselves to the english/british menatlity of coaching, maybe I am wrong. Dick Advocaat if my memory recalls well coached Leverkusen and di very well.
But anybody is better than AG, chelsea did well this year but, in my opinion, inspite of him rather than because of him. Rijkaard ius for sure a good manager in the same mould as Jose Mourinho, but dont know how the relationship between him and Ten cate would develop in london, they were not very freindly in the last year in Barcelona , thats why he left to manage Ajax and it was not the money, because he had a drop of wages when joined Ajax. But as FR ia a very friendly type of guy and treat the players with respect Ten Cate as a different attitude, he is a bully and controversal and quite a few barca players almost had a fight with him, so I don’t know, regarding keeping steve Clark thats a must, for any manager joining chelsea, but I read somewhere sometime ago that Steve Clark would like to try and manage a Club on his own so i dont know if he will stay in Chelsea. But Clark could be a very good manager, for sure better than AG.
Well I may agree, this season, with you on the competetiveness of the english league comparing with spanish and italian. But I am not so sure, just look the difference in points between the last relegated teams and the wins and you will see thats , for sure, in the EPL , it is appearing a huge gap of the “haves” and the “have nots” thats why K Keegan was so right and thruthfull about his comments, BTW KK is still a hero in here they really still like him,so I am not so sure about competitiveness, one thing I know italian, portugues and spanish leagues are the most skillfull of europe. But with the influx of foreign players in EPL you matching them.
JM gave an interview in A Bola sports paper, in Portugal, where he says that if he doesnt get a top club with ambition to win the CL, then he will not manage, rather wait until a top team comes available, he said that he had 11 offers to manage but declined them, as he wants his team and no managers imposed by the presidents, thats why he refused Barca they wanted Guardiola as his second , well it is a pity as I would like to see him back, particularly in CL.

decent season. Was expecting second or third with semi in CL this season so we exceeded my expectations.
I think we will face a pretty big re-structering soon. I would have waited to sign any1 from porto to see if the match fixing rumours were true, if they were bargain city.
I think drogba will leave because he is getting old and wants to play somewhere else. Im gonna guess italy.
Lampard is a possibility because ranieri wants him and he might try out other pastures.
I think malouda in the last couple of games has shown that if he can improve and adapt he has a place in the team. He is a very good left mid, MVP during his time in france. Sidwell i doubt will get a game because he is so low on the pecking order. Either loan or sell at a loss. Sinclair i think needs to be loaned out to a PL side same as sahar.
TBH is never gonna get a game unless some1 is injured.
Personally i think next season is gonna be chelsea or arsenal. Mourinho made some average buys during his time in Chelsea, outside his first year. Chelsea i think will get rid of a lot of dead weight and allow many players to transfer.
I think next season we feilding 442 and i can see
cech, bosingwa, terry, carvalho, a.cole, essien, ballack, malouda, j.cole, anelka, sheva being viable.

@GermanFan I’m very concerned about Ivanivic as well he seems to be a great CB and RB. I don’t like to see good player warming the bench. the key to this improved chelsea is not to fiddle with the defence or the midfield too much just take out what we don’t need for example in defence( TBH, Belletie) Mid field( SWP, Maka) deploy Mikel in the Maka role for the tour and through the season, and start Essien in MF. and Diego or Vander Vaart just behind the forwards( roaming role).

Petr Cech has today issued a statement after speculation in today’s media linked him with a move away from the club.
The 25-year-old said:
‘Contrary to numerous press stories over the last couple of days, I would like to make it very clear to the Chelsea fans that I have no plans to leave the club.
‘My sole focus at the moment is next week’s Champions League Final and then the Euros.
‘I am very happy at Chelsea. I still have two years left on my contract and I believe the club will sit down with my representatives at the appropriate time to discuss an extension of my current contract.’

@ 36. mike ayad I would like that seeing that we have Ivanovic already, but i think he would be more effective at RB. This would mean that the shape of the team would change…. but were would J.Cole play…?? on the left….. what would happen to malouda or kalou….

@ 36. mike ayad i think your right…… saw him on the team sheet in mid field. i think we just need just one MF player (a extremely creative player to put beside essien) therefore the RBs will be Ivanovic/Ferierra. but why would you buy one of the best RBs in the world and not using him in that position, we should be careful and not become like Madrid….. just buying players and don’t know how to use them …!!!

According me this season is not a failure, because we will win champion’s league next week, SURE.Now we are underdog’s and entire world is looking at MANU to lift champion’s league,so manu are under great pressure also almost all MANU player are tried after this long season, but we have fresh player’s with full of energy (except joe cole who played almost 90% game for Chelsea this season), just like last year FA CUP Final we will kill MANU in moscow.
About Next Season.
Formation:- 4-4-2
Manager:-
I want Avram Grant to be our next “Director Of Football” because i think he is good manager but not the best. so we need new manager like Frank Rijkaard,Mark Hughes or David Moyes (both know EPL better),even promoting Steve Clark as a manager is not an bad idea (LOOK at BARCA they promoted there reverse team manager).
Striker:-
Out:-
1. Drogba- he will go with jose
2. pizarro- not good for chelsea
3. Ben Sahar- loan to any EPL culb.
IN:-
1)Dimitar Berbatov
2)Adriano (our former manager Jose’s target after 05-06 season,he was out of form after death of his father, now he is playing Brazil, he will be cheap in transfer market but quality striker, who is looking for a return)
2008-09 striker list
1)Anelka
2)Berbatov
3)Adriano,
4)Sheva -Quality striker , he is good with 4-4-2 formation.
5)Kaluo- Also can be used as winger
6)Promote Di Santos.
Midefielder’s
Out:
1.SWP- swap for berbatov deal
2.lampard- One of chelsea best midfielder’s but his best time is over.if he accept new deal he can stay here otherwise move to jose’s next club.
3. Makalele- Retirement after wining Champion’s league.
In:
1.Frank ribery or Quaresma (wingers)
2.Van dart vart
2008-09 Midefielder list
1.Essien,
2.ballack,
3.lamps(if sign new contact)
4.Van dart vart
5.Frank ribery or Quaresma,
6.Sinclair - promote him
7.Malauda(next season he will be our best player because he is good in 4-4-2 )
8.Joe cole
9.Mikel
Defence :-
out :
1) Bellitti- he is good player but age is over.
2) Tel Benham- Sell to spurs
In :
1)Bosingwa
We donot need anymore signing in defense.
2008-09 Defenders list
1. John terry
2. Ricky Carvalho
3. Alex
4. Branislav Ivanovic
5. Ashely Cole
6. Bridge
7. ferria
8. Bosingwa

Chelsea have conceded late goals throughtout the season that has robbed them of 4-5 crucial wins… that has the made the difference… otherwise if u look we still caught up with ManU with many draws

I hope that Chelsea will give chances to our youngsters like Sinclair & Di Santo. But from what I see, it is hard to happen =(

@44
me 2 hop chelsea giv chances to youngsters
but in a club lyk chelsea it wont happen
we do nt hav 2 go 4 ribery and quaresma and all
on the left flank we hve stoch and kakuta
both excitin prospects
but still we go 4 overrated overpriced stars
right back we have mancienne hoo s smwat lyk micah richards
in the striker department we hve the best youngsters
di santo sinclair sahar …………..
yet we wont give thm a chance in the frst team
its all bcoz we hav a lot of feckin money
i hop roman gets bankrupt in th near future
so he ll stop bidding 40\50\80 millions on players
