Chelsea vs Derby | 12-Mar-08 @ 20:00 UK

Chelsea were lucky that after the Carling cup final defeat, they had to play only West Ham and Olympiakos. The players got their act together, AG got his team/bench selection right and we simply dismissed them with 7 goals scored and none conceded. Once again, after the shock upset against Barnsley, Chelsea gets to play easier oppositions – Derby and Sunderland – before the big games.

What it does is give us enough time to re-coup and prepare for the biggies. Derby at No.20 in a league table of 20 teams. Playing at home, we are supposed to roll them over, batter them with goals from right, left and centre and give away nothing at all. As always I expect a commanding and strong performance that lets our rival know that Chelsea is still in the hunt. Once again, AG has a full squad (minus Cech) to choose from. So if there is one area we cannot go wrong, it is team selection. I would dump 4-3-3 out of the window and take 4-4-2 with Anelka and Drogba on attack. I would pair Lampard and Ballack as they seem to be getting along very well after all. I would drop Essien and have Mikel play in central midfield. Joe Cole should play as the right midfielder. Lampard would be the left midfielder while Mikel and Ballack are in the centre. I would go for a tried and tested bunch in the back four too – Terry, Carvalho, Ashley Cole and Belletti.

There were many news stories on Avram admitting that he can expect the sack if he does not win premier league or champions league. I don’t know how much of it were true. If Roman is going to judge Avram purely as the Chelsea manager and not as his buddy, he should be out if this ends as a trophyless season. We can accept a rophyless season if we are in some kind of transition. When we evidently see that the Chelsea we know is weakening by the day and in the process has not obtained anything new, a trophyless season is a criminal waste. As we see all our rivals are strengthening (if Rafa leaves, Pool will be strengthened) while are diminishing.

Though there are rumours that Roman will keep AG for the next season too and give him a 100m budget, that does not mean we will get the choicest of players. I do not see any hot prospect between 18 to 24 years to choose Chelsea. Franco di Santo is not a hot prospect, he is just an unknown commodity. By hot prospect I mean those players who have already caught the eyes of club managers and not just scouts. Of course the ‘get-rich-quick’ factor plays a major role but players are very particular about the manager they play for. Working under AG is an exciting prospect for Aguerro? I don’t know.

With Avram, it’s not just about his big stage failures. He has not brought anything new to Chelsea which did not exist before him. Also, he has not made an impression that he is the boss. He looks to be resigned to defeat and his insecurity is all over him. He does not give confidence to a fan like me. I don’t know how much he can motivate players. If the players don’t respect the manager, they won’t be playing as a unit as they won’t be executing the manager’s orders. Ten Cate has spoke to Dutch newspapers that the players intentionally leak news that are supposed to be within four walls. Now, I can seriously question the players trust, respect and confidence on the team management and also the team management’s ability to keep things under control. This is not a case where one or two players having strained relationship with the boss for not being played. That’s completely understandable. These look lot more serious.

Under these circumstances, players may feel fed up and look for somewhere else and new players may not join as they may not be excited to work under such circumstances. If Grant stays beyond the summer, that’s a bloody major decision by Roman. I hope he takes long hard look at the situation and takes a sensible decision.

Coming back to this match, now don’t even talk about anything less than a win. Arsenal are crumbling slowly but surely. Now we are within reach of both Arsenal and Man Utd. If Man Utd loses their next match and if we win our two games on hand (Derby & Sunderland), we will be just 2 points below the table leader. How incredible is that? When Chelsea plays Arsenal and Man Utd, we would be witnessing the season defining matches at Stamford Bridge. Arsenal ended our title hopes at the Emigrants last season. I would like Chelsea to return the favour at Stamford Bridge.

I’m sure we’re gonna beat Derby very comfortably at Stamford Bridge. Derby have managed just 10 points in 28 matches, the lowest of what No.20 teams have managed in other leagues such as La Liga, Serie A etc. They have score 5 goals in 14 away games while conceding 33. On an average they concede 2-3 goals in every away match. If Chelsea is really fired up and want to show a reaction, we must be scoring 5 or 6. Now the last thing I want to see is Avram Grant in the post match conference saying that we created goals by combinations, we controlled the game, we showed character after the defeat to mighty Barsnley etc. My advice to Grant: Let’s demolish Derby and act as if nothing happened because we are supposed to demolish them.

My prediction is a 4-0. I will update this post as we get more team news. Bye!

well , Chelsea Vs Derby is not a big game to talk about , I would like to write more about Avram .
when Jose left chelsea, this season was over for me, so I do not care if we finish a trophyless season becasue I expected that.
Avram never came to become a permenant coach , he himself knows that.Chelsea has chance to win EPL and CL but I do not think we win anythnig. our team is acting so unexpected. One day , they play very well , one day they lose to Burnsly , these kind of teams can not go far. Chelsea will lose next stage of CL enless we play versus Schalke or Roma , other teams can beat us easilly.
right nowe , chelsea is no in a good situation .

Chelseafc reads
“Tickets still remain for the Derby game on Wednesday evening, and can be bought in person from the Chelsea ticket office at Stamford Bridge”

looks like cfc is finding it hard to sell tickets now !!!

@BC

I Don’t think roman will stand by his wrong decisions…………read sheva and his condition…………in all probability there will be a managerial overhaul as claimed by daily mail after spurs defeat……and to be honest we in all probability are going to see a major squad overhaul.[which is a necessity in my opinion].

at chelsea i expect our manager to be the best and our squad to be nothing but the best

so actually i analyzed yesterday what changes are exactly required without going for fancy dream team.
Problems

1.Fullbacks……….the common trend is one can attack and one can defend with possibly ashley the only person who may still regain his le’arse form………bridge is a fav and i like him but he is not happy on bench and then i don’t find him big match player.

i think chelsea will blow derby away for like a 3-0 or 4-0 match .
derby would not stand a chance in bridge . while chelsea really need win to compete in the race … if chelsea dont beat derby . they may as well dont compete for the premier league ..

5. - 11th Mar

@ TBF (true blue fan?)
why do u want belleti out? he can perform… i agree with bridge but ferriera is also a decent player…
for cdm… im going to say to sell essien… and with those oodles of money u can buy a quality playmaker
ricardo quaresma would be a good choice
messi for drogs swap maybe?
and sparta prague striker cant remember his name…
give pizzaro and sheva away for free pls!

6. - 11th Mar

I wouldn’t axe Lampard for anything in the world. The player has proven time after time that he deserves to be between in the Chelsea “legacy”. I believe he has done everything to gain a place in an all time Chelsea XI.

Keep Ballack only if he becomes a God in Chelsea’s attack and drop out Sheva & Drogba. No.7 is expired and that lousy bastard wants only more money. I’m sick of him changing his mind “i’ll leave/i’ll play 100% in my Chelsea remaining time” – PLAY WITH ALL YOU’VE GOT OR GTFO !.
Belletti still has few more years to cover but not in the first team.

Out: Ferreira (weaker by the year), Ben Haim (why the hell is he still in a Chelsea shirt ?!), Maka (no, I don’t want another Maldini), Hilario (..), SWP (not in Chelsea’s class as much as he’d like to), Drogba & Sheva.

Dunno why, but I’d give Pizzaro a few more chances.
Questions:
1. Why hasn’t ivanovic played ? I mean ffs, we’ve had a lot of “slow” games to get him in the team.
2. Why wasn’t Sinclair given any chance ? I remeber he played his first game against Macclesfield (or smth like that) and he scored. In his few games in Chelsea’s shirt he gave me the impression he should be a regular against teams like Barnsley, West ham, Derby etc.

@ BC

why go with a 4-4-2 with lampard on the left…its a waste of position and player…it would be better to go with kalou or malouda[ya most of u r against him] on the left wing or even bridge playing infront of ashley cole in this formation…also take out belletti and put in ferreira as we wont be having an anchorman infront of the defense to give protection so the best defensive back four we have at the moment is ferreira, carvalho,JT and Ashley cole…since this is derby why not start with lampard and ballack as the central mids…yeah yeah i hear all of you asking who will do the defensive duties…i think it would be better for lampard to move forward more often with ballack staying behind or it can work the other way too..with lampard being outside the box taking care of the distribution and possession of the ball when ballack can spring inside the box and make good use of his head…

but please no lampard on the left flank…i dont want to see lampard being made the next gerrard…

8. - 11th Mar

against Derby i would prefered this formation :

———————————–Cudicini———————————-

————Belleti————Terry—————-Carvalho——–A.Cole—

———-J.Cole————–Lampard—————Ballack———Kalou—-

—————————-Drogba—————Anelka———————-

prediction: 4-0/5-0 and why not a hattrick from Drogba or Anelka ..

Is there any truth to this:

Chelsea are reportedly set for a massive purge of players at the end of the season.

The Daily Express reports that as many as 10 players could be on their way out of Stamford Bridge, with owner Roman Abramovich apparently “angry” at their relative failure this season.

Abramovich will reportedly spend £100million on the team in the summer, but who the manager will be at that point is unclear. Avram Grant may keep his job, but only if he wins either the Premier or Champions League.

With Didier Drogba and possibly Frank Lampard set to depart of their own free will, Abramovich will reportedly also rid the squad of Andriy Shevchenko, as well as Juliano Belletti and Florent Malouda.

Assorted squad players such as Claudio Pizarro, Steve Sidwell and Tal Ben Haim will also apparently be shipped out.

Long-serving reserve ‘keeper Carlo Cudicini may be told he can leave, and to finish off the clear-out, Claude Makelele is expected to retire.

10. - 11th Mar

Guys I saw someone mention this keeper.
- Ustari (seems to be extremely very good!)to replace carlo
- Sinclair (MUST be given a chance in the squad!) to replace SWP(squad member)
_ Quaresma (we need a trickiy player out on the left/right) to replace SWP. We MUST get him at ANY cost!! who ever has to be sold must be sold!!

*** a striker dont know who yet but he has to be a Absolute finisher!!! maybe Benzema, Amauri???

11. - 11th Mar

Quaresma would be our very own Ronaldo(manu)
- we must try to get a few Sporting Lisbon players too…..

12. - 11th Mar

I’m somewhat hoping for a scoreless draw to book a London-Tel Aviv flight for a certain someone a bit faster. I just hope he doesn’t tarnish Chelsea’s home records with his fouled up strategizing and team-assessment blindness. That goes for both, our teams, with his rediculous subs, and the opponents who out-think him day by day.

But a four or five goal bludgeoning wouldn’t be unpleaseant…

13. - 11th Mar

I want us to drop Terry, he’s not above everyone, and he might have been the guiltiest party in Barnsley. Alex has been fantastic throughout yet JT and Carvalho are immediately filled in. Have Ballack captain the side again and send a clear message that the team is more important than individuals.

there are plenty of “talents” but there are few reliable.
I only know for sure that Alves would KILL in chelsea’s shirt and same goes for David Villa.

Benzema said he doesn’t want England, and huntelaar seems overrated to me.
But I strongly agree that there are players from the academy that should be given a chance.

17. - 11th Mar

There is going to be a big change at then end of the season. We need to get rid of
ben-haim – dissapointment,
makalele- he’s what, 34, bring in some youth
swp – will never attain man city form at chelsea, not worth 21m
pizzaro – at least we got our moneys worth, free transfer that is
schevchenko – the money burner, send him back to italy, bet you he blossoms

rb has been troubled for along time, im hoping ivanovic can do alot at rwb, if not, we’ll have to lppk for talent as belletti won’t be improving at 31, daniel alves is likely to leave sevilla

bring in someone like vincent kompany/micah richards/sergio ramos at cb, royston drenthe, ashley cole replacement in future maybe?

our wings are a big problem. The loss of Robben is evident, malouda is decent but not the starting quality we need, i vote to play joe cole on the left and bring in a class winger like quaresma, or even an attacking midfielder like ronaldinho to make runs from the right and sort out our crossing. Maybe look into some youth like valencia’s silva

drogba is getting on, i do rate his talent but, while he is of high value, it might be worth selling him, let us see more of sinclair, az akmaar’s mouusa dembele is a left footed drogba aged 20…idea?

18. - 11th Mar

why not try essien at right back? he always seems to run from that position
that frees up midfield for mikel to develop properly
just sort out the wings and manager please

19. - 11th Mar

With all this mess at the club maybe we should get rid of Abramovich, who apparently doesn’t know what he wants.

If you want eye-catching attacking football you wouldn’t appoint a clown as the manager, would you?

20. - 11th Mar

Midfield_Decider! you’re really stupid! that man’s spending millions for the club and you want to get rid of him?
Maybe he spent the millions in his own way! but hey! he brought us the best players! we should never forget that!

21. - 11th Mar

goodness everyone here seems to come up with a team full of big names…why not try to use the big names we already have and make it into a better team with some good transfers instead of trying to bring in the likes of ronaldinho…

22. - 11th Mar

messi and quaresma in
sheva, essien, drogs and pizz out

23. - 11th Mar

essien out ?!?! my god, that’s the only untouchable player left in Grant’s team.
In my opinion he’s the only constant world class player we have now.

Quoting Midfield_Decider

With all this mess at the club maybe we should get rid of Abramovich, who apparently doesn’t know what he wants.

If you want eye-catching attacking football you wouldn’t appoint a clown as the manager, would you?

I totally agree with you , Roman himself does not know what he wants . our problem is not players , that’s the manager.

26. - 11th Mar

Grant should be sacked if we beat derby 1-0. He should be mobbed if we draw.

27. - 11th Mar

Have to disagree with you, Dakku. I think Essien is Chelsea’s equivalent of the ‘emperor’s new clothes’ – he looks the part, he runs and runs, but what does he ever really achieve? He doesn’t really carry the ball out of defence like (say) Viera, he doesn’t make incisive long or short passes, he rarely scores, and he does get caught in possession, like for Spurs penalty in the final, Essien was trying to dribble the ball out of the penalty box! I think a non-performing Essien is one of our problems. Sorry, mate!

28. - 11th Mar

we should continue with 4-3-3.

see the irony… chelsea loses the easier cup but wins the difficult/impossible cups.

que sera sera, what ever will be, will be!

hey, i must be dreaming. somebody give me a tonic. i just don’t seem inspired by AG but its only chelsea i continue to support and not the coach.

30. - 11th Mar

Hello
It’s so funny to read all you buyers and sellers, you buy, you seal, and you get rid of some.
All this with RA money,
I must say that Midfield Decider was the funniest one saying
“Maybe we should get rid of Abramovich”
So with whose money you would play your fantasy football?
MD I would call RA and tell him that before you sack him he will sack you, lol
God you’re lucky stupidity is not painful.
But me I am not such an expert as you guys, I can only say that the key player for me is Maka
Yes his 34 but he can give what we need when called, (I still think he would have made the change both in the carling cup and fc cup losses) and for me he is the player we must keep!!
Any ways we are about to start a 12-15 cup finals kind of games, each game is extremely important and must be a win in order to go to the next game with the same attitude.
Starting this game we must take one game at the time and win one by one, with a bit of luck both arsenal and Man u would lose few points, we must not think about the end and about win it all (I hate when some here take the other teams as they are not a factor) and really take it one at a time.
Keep your buying and sealing to later and get behind the team, as real fans should do

31. - 11th Mar

If Chelsea fail to deliver this week, I will not watch another game until Grant is gone.

Honest truth.

32. - 11th Mar

Honestly, I don’t believe that we can win the Premiership with Grant, therefore I want us to lose points against Derby and Sunderland so that the sacking process could be accelerated.

As for the Champions League, no way we can beat any of the British sides and Barca. Even Roma and Fenerbahce can knock us out. The only chance for us seems to be Schalke.

33. - 11th Mar

@ dakku.. read No.27
thats exactly why i want essien out… he will also fetch loads of moolah to buy ricardo quaresma, messi

34. - 11th Mar

MD – r u serious when u say that Fenerbahce can knock us out ? dont compare Fenerbahce with us .. i know ur from Turkey and blla blla but for me Fener is the weakest team left in competition and which team has the luck to draw them they are in semi automatically ..

35. - 11th Mar

atleast one position has opened up for jose for sure and thats inter as mancini is gonna step down end of the season..

36. - 11th Mar

@33. BMO

I bet you thought exactly the same before Fenerbahce-Sevilla games, which, by the way were the most entertaining 2 legs of all 8 match-ups. Overall 10 goals scored with no penalties in the game + extra-time + after game penalties.

Learn football.

37. - 11th Mar

@33. BMO

And for the records, though I’m from Istanbul, I’m not a Fenerbahce fan. From local teams I support Galatasaray. Yet I admit that the strongest side in Turkey at the moment is Fenerbahce.

They have very creative midfield with Brazilian play-maker Alex de Souza, and other Brazilians are David, Aurelio, Roberto Carlos and Edu. They have a good defender in Uruguayan international Lugano. They have a very good left winger Ugur Boral who outclassed Dani Alves in both games, and a very good right-back Gokhan Unal. Their striking force is ex-Chelsea man Mateja Kezman.

They are definitely much better than Schalke and can cause problems to any team at their place.

38. - 11th Mar

And the last thing:

Fenerbahce’s manager is legendary Zico, nicknamed “White Pele”. He is much better than Avram Grant.

39. - 11th Mar

guyz ne news on sheva…………….or is he out coz of injury?????????///////////////

40. - 11th Mar

I Agree who draws Fenerbahce or Schalke is automatically in the semis.
They are definetly the easiest teams in the CL.
I also agree Zico is a much better manager than AG, better CV as well
But then again if Zico reads this blog and reads that there are some bloggers that have the audacity to comapre Zico to AG , I bet Zico will be offended.

41. - 11th Mar

Mancini is going to be off in May. Have we found new coach?
Has Jose found new club? i hope answer for both question is yes.

42. - 11th Mar

My prediction is a 4-0

Are u sure the other team (Derby) don’t have a Goalkeeper????
Hahaha

Bold, Very, very bold

Shud be over 2 goals But 4??
hmmm… Hopefully they can do it

43. - 11th Mar

Derby will be thrashed a 4 -0 I reckon

44. - 11th Mar

yes !!! chelsea will trash derby 4 – 0 !!
all of u wish me luck man !!

45. - 11th Mar

what the hell is wrong u guys. do you want chelsea to loose points just for avram to get sacked. and why is essien a bad player suddenly. he had a bad few weeks but for me he is one of the best defencive midfielders in the world. do you hate avram more than you love chelsea? even if chelsea loose all of their games this seoson from know i will cry every day but when the game starts i will sit and watch it and i will still love chelsea.

46. - 11th Mar

@36 MD
Yes i agree for example they can beat Barca 2-0 at home and lose 5-0 away ..
and they beat Sevilla so what .. they have no CL experience at all and they’re not Sevilla of 2 years ago either

47. - 11th Mar

@43
Totally agree with u mate .. some of u call urself a Chelsea fan and wanna lose games just AG to get sacked ..

48. - 11th Mar

My team for Chelsea v Derby:

CARLO
BELLETTI-JT(c)-RICCY-ASHLEY
OBI
BALLACK-LAMPS
JOEY-DROGS-KALOU

I’ll be the first to say that if MANCINI comes to Chelsea……..THAT WOULD BE THE MOST HORRIBLE THING TO HAPPEN!!!!!!

PLZ ROMAN DONT HIRE MANCINI>>>>>>>>

50. - 11th Mar

Why Not?

51. - 11th Mar

he has no CL experience, his football is predictable and no way he’s in the top 5 managers atm.

mancini is a good coach. why they dont win cl is because they (inter) dont have a decent midfiel that can compete with teams like valencia last year or liverpool. they have a good defence and good strikers. that si enough to win teams in italy because the way italian teams play. but playing against for example english team you have to have a good midfield that can play bouth defensive and attack. mancini is a good coach.

54. - 11th Mar

Yes, he’s a good coatch. But Chelsea needs one of the best, and Mancini simply isn’t.
If you want to pursue great things you need a great leader, and currently in my opinion Lippi would be the perfect match.

55. - 11th Mar

well i want the best for chelsea to but im tired that we switch all the time, it feels like everything happens because of romans money. zola, ian wright and alot of top class players played for chelsea even tough chelsea diddnt have the money they have now.

this kind of shit piss me off

56. - 11th Mar

how fickle football fans can be? Not long ago, belleti was our best player this season- now some say he is so bad we must ship him out. essien not long ago was better midfielder than lamps and ballacks- now he is so bad that according to some we must transfer him. Mark my words, within a matter of few weeks, lot of these people will start singing another tune.

How fickle we can be-

57. - 11th Mar

its because most of the fans on this blog is like roman. they have just learn to like chelsea and they think football is like monopoly. its not about selling and buying expensive players. its about building a team. if the fans cant give chelsea the time to build a team how can abramovic.

The part “why they don’t win cl” is very funny. Inter is not even in the last 8 for two consecutive years, they never played final in CL and you are saying “why they don’t win CL”.

We don’t need Mancini. If we get him that will be a disaster for Chelsea.

Great point, blueFan- most succumb too easily to the media propaganda- samuel etoo was one of the most wasteful strikers in the history of the world- watch jis early days when real kept loaning him and his terrible misses when playing for cameroon- see what he has become now- time, confidence, team spirit- that is what we need. this ship out ship in approach must stop.

It’s none of your business what my name means.

CL is one thing The League is another thing. Inter and Juventus may be the latest Champions of Serie A, but every time Milan played them in CL they beat them. Example is 2002/2003 CL when Milan won CL by beating first Inter in semis and then Juventus in the final. After that Milan played Inter once more in CL quarters and beat them again, don’t remember the year. Therefore, it’s not about Inter being unable to beat English and Spanish teams. They are simply not up to CL. Even Fenerbahce beat them in Istanbul this year and broke their undefeated serie. Every team that has a potential can beat them.

The same can be said about Rafa’s Liverpool and Jose’s Chelsea. Chelsea defeated Liverpool 2 times in the League in 2004/05 but were unable to repeat that in Cl semis. Last year again Chelsea were knocked out by Liverpool in semis. In this case Jose’s Chelsea were not a macth to Liverpool in CL, though Chelsea’s squad was better than Liverpool’s in both cases.
