Chelsea vs Reading | 30-Jan-08 @ 19:45 UK

chelsea_reading.pngBack in blue outfit in the premier league mid-week match after a couple of away cup fixtures as Chelsea host Reading in the evening kick off at Stamford Bridge.

Though I like the electric yellow jersey, I have to admit that I feel comfortable to see the Chelsea players in blue. Quite natural, I guess. AG has confirmed that he’s done with the January business with the signings of Anelka, Ivanovic and Franco.

You don’t have to be browsing every news website and refreshing every minute as we get close to the closure of this transfer window. Chelsea are done with the shopping.

I am happy from the squad and we will continue to look but I don’t think we need to rush about these things. We didn’t rush even when we had big, big problems. I never stop looking, even if you have the best team you can always be improved, but I will not stop looking. It’s not easy, because we are looking for the best quality, the best personality, the best attitude and character, so I think it’s difficult with a lot of pressure now, with the money and the media. There is pressure to win, especially at the big clubs, so you need positive personalities. You cannot win always, and to find this combination in one person is not easy. This is the reason I wanted two more players but I didn’t find them for the moment. Di Santo and Ivanovic can help us in the future and a club like us needs to think not about now but also the future.

So Grant still wants two more players to come in but unable to get the right ones. But he can relax. With these three players coming in, I guess we may not need any players anywhere. We have top class players and backups for every role on the pitch.

Talking about the African Cup players from Chelsea, he said:

I am very proud of them, our players. We want them to be with us, but all four players have performed well. Didier was good, Kalou scored an important goal, Essien was the best player on the pitch yesterday and Mikel has played well, so I am proud of this. We want them as soon as possible but they represent their country, they are proud of this, so we understand it will be longer. Again it is a fact, we cannot change it so they are there for the moment and we want them here as soon as possible.

It’s good to see that Grant is positive about the African contingent in Chelsea. I hope this quartet of Drogba, Essien, Mikel and Kalou stay with us for at least another season. That said, Drogba is his own undoing. The next time he says anything about joining Milan or Barca (unless it is a misinterpretation or something) he should be given the boot. Anyone who does not have the passion (anymore) to be with Chelsea should be shown the door.

Did you think Mikel would be back as Nigeria was in the verge of elimination? Wait up, Mikel just scored and set up another for a win that put them through to the next round by goal difference ahead of Mali. Now Mikel would face Essien in the next round. Should be interesting! All Chelsea guys have come up with some scintillating performances so far. Take a quick look at the status of the African Cup.

Just when Franco thought he was dreaming, his dream just got whackier for him. What better can happen for a 18-year old Argentine player, than Diego Maradona shaking hands with him and having a few words with him? He was on the same pitch at the same time as Maradona. I’m sure he won’t forget that day!

Ah! This match against Reading. I nearly forgot where I started. Chelsea have won the last 4 matches and Reading have lost the last 4 matches. After four straight defeats, Reading needs to play at Stamford Bridge. Make it 5, Steve Coppell!

Like Chelsea, Reading are missing some of their players to injury and also some to the African Cup. They are the second poorest defending side in the premier league, conceding 49 goals in 23 matches, that shipping 2 goals per match on an average. If you add the facts that they are playing Chelsea and playing at Stamford Bridge, it could very well be 3-0 or 4-0 for Blues.

Hahnemann is a good keeper. I could see him frustrate us with his incredible saves as he normally wears his turbo boots when he plays Chelsea. Lita is a dangerous striker. He si very powerful young man, who can be even more dangerous in set pieces. Sidwell should get a game not just because he would play against his former club. He had a very good game against Wigan, probably his best for Chelsea. I hope he’s given another chance.

One thing I don’t want to see in this match, is sitting back and hitting them on counterattack. We’re playing at fortress Stamford Bridge and we should play them off the park. I would even take a 1-0, but I want Chelsea to dominate them in the midfield not just in the defence.

My prediction is a high-scoring-clean-sheeter. 3-0 or 4-0.

P.S: How about this for a finish!

Yes reading will whipped I also predict 3-0
About the video, what a goal, what I dont like
is the long balls.

2. - 30th Jan

I’d go for 1-0.
It could be tough, still living in the shadow of Hunt-Cech collision.
Horrible.

3. - 30th Jan

worst team – Reading

worst player – boularouz

The combination of these 2 cost us the quadruple last season.

Thrash them 3-0 but it will be difficult as they will be prepared to parki the bus infront of the goal. Anelka for hattrick anyone?

4. - 30th Jan

I will go for a hard earn 2-1 victory. Reading will put up a fight and i believe there is one thing we know how to do best and thats grinding out results.

I will expect CFC to lineup the same as the last match

Up Blues

Sidenote : I cant wait to see the Quarter Final of African Nations Cup between Ghana V Nigeria. Our midfield duo in action against each other.

we have to definitely win this one to close in title chase next week when we play pompey while arsenal and man utd are quite likely to drop points when they play away to man city and spurs.

comeon blues!!! 3 points….

Other than Anfield, no other team do have ill feelings in the league for than the Reading Rugby Club. Nearly killing Cech and knocking out Carlo robbed Chelsea of another Prem. An Anelka hat-trick? Heck, I want to see a Makalele brace! With the ACN and injuries, I’ve learned to be content with 1-0 victories. Today, I want Grant and the Gang to open a can of WHIP&$$! 6-0.
I painfully agree that if Drogs keeps whining about wanting to go elsewhere, he should be shown the door. But, the way people wanted to lift up Sheva so bad while he was the best striker in the world and put the winning goals in for the Carling and FA cups, the man has a right to be frustrated. I hope and pray Anelka can convince him to stay.
Personally, I hate the yellow kit. They look like flourecent marking pens.

tottenham signs woodgate , hutton (bad for carling cup final) and pompey signs milan baros (bad for the next PL game) ……… anyways wll win both :)

8. - 30th Jan

Someway…Somehow we always make a hash of these simple games!!!!
I see a hard fought 2:1 victory 4 Chelsea!!!

We need to dispatch these teams with a lot less strain and pressure on these players!!!
We ought to kill of these games by the hour mark!

come on give some budding talent a chance! maluda as a substitute…
the cole swp anelka trioo will bring in the goals even if scott cant deliver
i want to see a more 4-4-2 diamond with the maka holding it down or a 4-1-3-2 which is attacking
we can relax with ric.c as a cb

i hope we sign quaresma in the summer… i think he will be perfect

11. - 30th Jan

i agree with u bluesluv i would love to see R.Quaresma in our team he’s phenomenaL .. for the game i think we should win easily so i predict s’thing like a 3-0,3-1 with Anelka on the scoresheet again! ..

I am not sure this game cud be a walk in the park, for some reason when teams play against chelsea they raise their game, it could be the fear factor we were talkin about, teams still fear chelsea, if given space and time, opposition knows we can rip teams apart, we generally tend to be very unselfish and lazy, 1-0 o r 2-1 usual score lines, RC is missing i guess, due to 5 yellow cards, i am not sure, if i am right. so it cud be be a start for the serb along s ide alex or it cud be TBH and alex and i dont see much change from the team we played against wigan.

Defnitly ricardo quresma cud bring some flair into chelsea team, but i dont think porto will let him go unless there is an offer 25 million plus, i just read in tribalfooty, that chelsea have offered 15 million for amurai and its turned down.

Michael Ballack is back and Paulo Ferreira comes in for suspended Juliano Belletti in the only two changes from the side that won at Wigan.

Ballack takes the place of Steve Sidwell having recovered from a calf strain but Claude Makelele continues as captain in what is his fifth consecutive start.

Nicolas Anelka will begin a game for Chelsea for the first time at Stamford Bridge.

For Reading, there is no Dave Kitson in attack so Kevin Doyle will move back up front with John Oster coming in on the right of midfield.

Stephen Hunt, who was an unused sub in this fixture last season, will play in central midfield.

Chelsea are expected to line up in a 4-3-3 formation as follows:

1 Petr Cech
20 Paulo Ferreira
33 Alex
5 Ricardo Carvalho
18 Wayne Bridge
24 Shaun Wright-Phillips
4 Claude Makelele (c)
13 Michael Ballack
10 Joe Cole
39 Nicolas Anelka
15 Florent Malouda

Subs: 23 Carlo Cudicini, 22 Tal Ben-Haim, 9 Steve Sidwell, 17 Scott Sinclair, 14 Claudio Pizarro.
