avram-grant1.jpgYes it is an AG interview, but he is neither giving the answers nor asking the questions. He is just the subject of the interview. I thought of interviewing myself about about Avram Grant and this is what I got. I’m willing to ask you all the same questions and publish the interesting ones. Ok, here we go!

Do you like Avram Grant?

I don’t know. He looks like a good guy. Poor old man. Hardly any reason to like him yet. He certainly does not seem to be the one to make a first and quick impression. Why would you normally like someone? You like what and how someone does and speaks. I won’t say I like him but . . . yes that leads to the next question.

Do you hate Avram Grant?

I don’t think so. There are certain aspects in Avram that I hate. Of course there are certain hateable aspects in every human being, starting from myself. I don’t hate Avram Grant the person. I hate certain specific qualities that he has displayed. You know, it’s like I loved Drogba but I hated his diving (but he has transformed now).

Do you think Avram got the job because Roman is his friend?

Yes. That’s what I strongly believe. But that’s no indication of whether he would be able to achieve things in future. Pre-Chelsea, if Avram was to make himself available in the job market, how many top clubs would wait for his signature? May be just one, that’s us!

Do you think Avram had a role to play in JM’s dismissal?

I’m not sure. Having observed the situation since Dec 2006 until now, I cannot say with conviction that Avram played no role in JM’s sack. I still remember the remarks from JM, when Grant was appointed in Dec 2006. He was supposed to be a thorn in JM’s flesh, wasn’t he?

Do you think Avram is the right man for the Chelsea job?

No. I don’t think so. He absolutely lacks the pedigree to be the manager of a team that Chelsea has become. He can be the man for the job, but not the right man for the job. If I say he’s the right man for the job, then I need to eliminate quite a few big names to choose him over them.

Do you think Avram takes digs at JM?

Yuppety yup. I’m old enough to understand such things. He started subtly and then became little obvious and now it’s glaringly blatant. May be this is where he did a blunder. It seems to be his well-planned strategy to attack JM and his methods, to gain some points out of it. If I were him, I’d have quietly gone about my way and delivered the goods and then would have started seeing more and more fans supporting me. Knowing that he is replacing a darling of the fans, he could have conducted himself better, only for his good.

Do you think he is carried by Clarke and Ten Cate?

May be, yes. I haven’t seen enough proof to believe otherwise. I’m not even talking about the inspirational proxy half time speech. Some post match comments where he wants people to believe that his tactics did work. Once I almost felt sorry for him! It was said that Avram’s training and fitness methods are very primitive. Ok, that Ten Cate will cover that. Then Avram should be doing the man management. No, Steve would do that, he knows the players better. Ok then, Avram must be taking care of the transfers. No baby, that’s where Roman steps in. Otherwise, Avram must be working with the players closely to create the spirit and bonding among them. Nope, don’t flex a muscle, those were already there. Oh yes, I almost forgot, he must be changing Chelsea’s playing style! Hell no!

Do you think he is a good manager?

Tell me, how do you measure the quality of a manager? There are some tangible areas – team selection, substitutions, formations, dugout presence, press conferences, playing style, results – to name a few. In my eyes, he is yet to score in most of these areas. Things like naming only 10 players for our Man Utd match, appearing in front of the press not knowing anything about the Arsenal result (they had drawn) after we had beaten Spurs, letting Steve Clarke to do the talking etc are not helping his persona. There are also some intangible areas – how the manager spots potential, how he make players raise their level, how he develops players, what image he creates among oppositions, how does he motivate and inspire players etc. As such these are intangible areas and thus difficult to measure and may be it would be clear by end of the season.

Do you think Avram needs time to show his stuff?

No. My question is why? This is prime time football. Unless you’re the manager of Arsenal who can wait for a decade to pick up two titles and meanwhile enjoying the orgasm of their own playing style, you will not be given time. For the millions that have been invested already, we should be winning as much as possible. Let me put this clearly. At the stage at which Chelsea is in, winning is more important than anything else. The moment Chelsea drops below in the league and other cups, we would be called a flash in the pan who happened to win back-to-back titles and disappeared after that. Also, heavy investments are the order of the day. There is money everywhere. If we take a title holiday of two years, you could see top eight vying for the title with realistic chances than the current top four. How much ever you hate Capello (of course ‘I’ like him), he delivered the title against all odds. When he was appointed, he didn’t have the support of the players, lost the support of the fans and slowly even of the management, came close to getting sacked in Dec, but in the end he delivered. I don’t think Avram would ever lose the support of Roman, even if the world is against him.

What was the one best thing that Avram has done so far?

He hired Ten Cate and ensured that Steve Clarke does not leave. I’m not sure if Ten Cate was Roman’s choice because, he is obsessed with Barca style, some say. Steve Clarke’s retention is very important in this context as he knows the players, and as an able assistant he learnt and endorsed JM’s football philosophy and style. He had to remain to connect the players and Grant. If it were Avram’s decisions to hire Ten Cate and retain Steve Clarke, thumbs up Av! Great job!

What was the one worst thing that Avram has done so far?

He has failed miserably so far in his media handling. His approach towards JM and our much prided earlier successes. He is old enough not to be misguided, so I think it must be his own idea. I don’t think it has come to the notice of the club management as his comments are not controversial. For the Chelsea faithful, who follow all pre-match and post-match comments, his messages are very clear. And the funny thing is he has not achieved anything by those remarks. At least if he was playing mind games with other premier league managers, that would have been of some help.

Many of the players who considered JM to be their mentor and a father figure, would feel embarrassed by AG’s digs at JM. That’s where I think he put a wrong foot forward. Just for a moment imagine if he had given due credit to JM, his successes and all other intangibles he brought us, he would have been more popular among the fans? Probably! At least, Stamford Bridge wouldn’t be singing ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’.

Do you think Avram has delivered so far?

Yes, I think so. If we are talking about results, yes he has delivered so far. If getting results are very important, there is no better manager than JM. If getting results are so important, what was the need to sack the most successful Chelsea manager to replace him with someone who did not have a better trackrecord? If it is playing style and not results, I don’t see any change. Same strengths and same tactics are getting us the results. For all the talk about scoring more goals, teams like Everton, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Tottenham have scored more goals than us this season. Teams do not fear Chelsea anymore. Ask Fergie which Chelsea would he prefer to play – Cheslea of 04-05, 05-06, 06-07 or 07-08?

Do you want Avram Grant to leave Chelsea?

No. Why should he? Let him stay. This is always a results game. You win, you stay and if you lose, you leave (there are rare exceptions!). The team has performed well despite my feeling that he has not. Let him do his bit. But let’s not have double standards. If we end up at anything less than No.2, we should look for a new manager for the next season. Of course, irrespective of what happens in the champions league. In fact, I do value premier league much more than the champions league where luck plays a good part. Oh wait, that’s what he’s supposed to have brought us!

What should he start doing?

I think Avram should be more savvy. He should improve his accent and vocabulary. I’m not joking, it is important. He should work on media handling and public communications. He should start thinking about making Chelsea a much feared force again in English and European football. I want those days back when teams used to be afraid, be very afraid.

What should he stop doing?

He should stop talking about the past. We all know he is working with JM’s team and tactics. There is no point in making references to anything before and claiming improvement (that long ball discussion was unwarranted and boomeranged back). First reason is, it is certainly not a level playing field for himself and JM of the last season. Second reason is, there is nothing to be achieved by talking about it. If AG is going to lose the title by 4 points, it cannot be an improvement. If he is going to lose the title by 10 points, I would not say it was better under JM. The bottomline would be ‘will we be champions or not’. Look forward to the future, without making any references to the past.

What should he continue doing?

Do just enough to keep Chelsea winning. Win as many matches as possible. He should continue to use the methods of JM, and change them only when they don’t work.

How would you rate Avram Grant on a scale of 10, with what you’ve seen so far?

I would rate Chelsea’s performances under him, at a strong 8/10. I would rate the man Avram Grant, the Chelsea manager, at 6/10 which is where he started. He has been kind of penny-wise-pound-foolish which makes him stay at 6/10.

That’s it. Now my request to you would be to keep the discussions clean and tidy. I know this is a sensitive topic nowadays but it’s absolutely possible to have a mature discussion among grown-ups without indulging in insult and abuse. Trust you guys!
