Who should be the FIFA player of the year?

Now, it’s down to three players - Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. One of these players will win the FIFA player of the year award on Dec 19. Who, among these three, do you think deserves this crown?

To start with I don’t know how Lionel Messi got himself in there. Of course, he is a great young talent setting Europe on fire, assisting and scoring with every part of his body but when it comes to achievements and his contributions to the team’s successes, he should rank lower. Barcelona were eliminated early in the Champions league early this year and ended up second in the La Liga. Chelsea fared better this year than Barca. Messi is not quite the star in his national team, like he is with Barca. If Messi is in the short list, Drogba should have been there as well.

Then comes Kaka. Again a great player, no doubt. Great human being as well, if you know his personal side of things. Kaka did play a major role in Milan’s champions league success, along with some important contributions from Seedorf, Inzaghi and also few others. As far as their domestic season goes, Milan did not do anything too impressive or Kaka could not inspire them to come up with something special. Even in this season so far, Milan have been poor (they’re without a win in San Siro after 7 matches!). If Kaka deserves this award based on his champions league contribution, Steven Gerrard must have got nominated if not awarded when he won the champions league for Liverpool. I believe Gerrard’s contribution to Liverpool’s champions league win was much more than Kaka’s contribution to Milan’s European success last season. Like Messi, even Kaka has been mediocre for Brazil. In the Brazilian team, Kaka is completely dispensable.

Cristiano Ronaldo has a terrific season. He absolutely drove Man Utd to success in many matches on his own. He was many times the difference between 1 and 3 points. Ronaldo was the most important and biggest contributor to Man Utd winning the premier league title again. His team reached the champions league semi finals and lost to Milan. On an equal platform, Man Utd had everything in them to beat Milan. It was fatigue which made the difference (just like the Chelsea-Liverpool semifinal), otherwise Ronaldo might have taken them to the final or even won it. Ronaldo is magnificent for Portugal in the world cup as well as in the Euro qualifiers. The only gripe against Ronaldo is that he is not as consistent against the bigger teams as he is against the smaller ones.

When it comes to European and International football awards, the south european bias tends to be there. The players from Spanish and Italian league have an edge when compared to the ones from the English league. Believe this, no player from the English league has ever won the FIFA player award which is presented every single year.

So what’s my verdict? Cristiano Ronaldo. With due respects to Kaka and Messi and their achievements in this year, Ronaldo is way above them this year. As I’m writing this, Kaka has just won the Ballon d’Or beating Cristiano Ronaldo. If the race for FIFA player of the year is between Kaka and Ronaldo, Ballon d’Or shows that Kaka would win the FIFA award as well. But I still think Cristiano Ronaldo should be the FIFA player of the year.

I hate Messi cheater,
But I think he will be chosen because he plays very well for his club and international team ,
1 - Messi
2 - KAKA
3- Ronaldo , I believe Ronaldo should not be nominated. he is a very ordinary player.

To call C.Ronaldo as an ordinary player is little too much. He is a very skillful player but not very intelligent. End of the day, we are measuring their capabilities by their contribution. How else do you think Cannavaro got the award last year? He won the world cup and he was the FIFA player of the year.

Playing very well for the club/country (still I dont think he’s been great for Argentina on the whole) may not be enough Maysam. For these awards, they should have contributed to some major achievements. I don’t see any trophy or league won by Messi’s team, him being the biggest contributor. No.

He is currently in his best form and if he is able to inspire Barca to win a trophy by converting his form into more match winning performances, may be he can be in the running for 2008 awards.

And these three players are the shortlisted players for the award.

There are and were many players like Ronaldo , even better
Duff,
Robben,
Ribery ,
Rotten,
Robinho ,
Van Vart,
Mancini,

Ronaldo got big and bigger just becasue of Media, like Beckham. If Ribery did not have that ugly scare on his face, He would be as big as Ronaldo right now.

Didier should win it! He scored 33 goals for Chelsea last season & was the highest goalscorer in the Primiership. He also played brilliantly for his country Ivory Coast throughout the year. Robinho, for his role in the latter part of last year when Real Madrid won La Liga, and for his contribution at Brazil’s triumph at Copa America, and his fantastic start at La Liga & Champions League this year should be 2nd. Kaka should be 3rd for his role in Milan’s Champions League triumph, but he did not play in Copa America. It should between Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Kaka for the 3rd position.

No idea how the filthy cheats C**t Ronaldo & Argie w*nker Messy got nominated! Shocking….

1. DROGBA
2. ROBINHO

Maysam:

Who DESERVES to be the Fifa player of the year?

Christiano Ronaldo

FA Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup contributions there can only be one winner and Cristiano Ronaldo deserves this award hands down.

As for Chritiano Ronaldo being an ordinary player, I disagree with you because I have seen those Nike commercials and other bits of footage of what this man is capable of and it leaves me breathless!

My list:

1 C. Ronaldo
2 L. Messi
3 Kaka

Is it other football players that are voting for FIFA player of the year? Then kaka will win. He’s on a different planet in terms of contribution and skill (not talking about the predictable feints and step overs you get from Ronaldo) in play making and his great vision on the pitch.

It is Kaka by a long margin. Messi is good but not transcendently so at this point. C. Ronaldo is a great player but is not even the best in his own league. Kaka, on the other hand, is brilliant in every facet of play and in every competition. No question he is the better of the two. All one has to do to see that is look at the UEFA game last year when Kaka simply took over and Ronaldo again failed to appear on the stage.

Also, voting for Ronaldo based on Nike commercials is a bit foolhardy don’t you think? There are probably a good number of us on this site who can juggle or perform some of the tricks in a manner reminiscent of him. Don’t base a players worth on the show he can give you.

Milan does not perform in LaL,ga simply because they don’t care about it, all they want is to beat Real Madrid’s Champions’ League record.

kaka is a good player but does not deserve the award this year. it must be ronaldo. kaka is a FLOP in this season’s serie a and also a FLOP with Brazil.

mid_dec - what you said is one of the most ridiculous statements i’ve read. you mean to say milan will let inter win the serie a year after year, until they match the champions league count of real madrid? what a lame fecking excuse? milan in serie a this season are complete bollocks and kaka could do nothing about it. kaka could not resurrect the falling milan.

kaka does NOT deserve this award. it should be cristiano ronaldo, none else.

First up, this is not a nobel peace prize or something. Forget about their personal side. I think Kaka got te ‘player of the tournament’ for the 07 CL. So he got his due. he can’t win the player of the year award by just playing well in one tournament. Look at Milan in Serie A now!!! What is Kaka doing to help Milan improve in Serie A???

Kaka
1. Kaka played superbly well as Milan won the CL 07-08 (about 10 matches?)
2. Kaka uninspiring as Milan was crap in the last Serie A season (38 matches, he played in most)
3. Kaka is still not shining as Milan is crap in this Serie A season so far (10 matches so far)
4. Kaka could not do much as Brazil was crap and knocked out in the world cup.
5. When his country wanted him, Kaka opted out of Copa America (did not play a single match) but still Brazil went on to win lol

Cristiano Ronaldo
1. Ronaldo played superbly well as Man Utd won the Premiership (38 matches, he played in most)
2. Ronaldo is still sizzling as Man Utd is No.2 with three points off.
3. Ronaldo inspired Portugal to reach the world cup quarters
4. Ronaldo almost on his own took Portugal to Euro 2008
5. Ronaldo played well as Man Utd lost in semi finals (only fatigue was the difference between milan and man utd)

Now, tell me who should win the FIFA player of the year. Leave your biases aside.

Kevin you are way off it here.

1. Kaka was brilliant in Serie A in 2007. He is not the reason that Milan did poorly. I would challenge you to go back and find a game in which he was anything other than fantastic.

2. Ronaldo has not been “sizzling” this year. He was, by his own admission, poor to begin the year and is only just rounding into form.

3. The World Cup argument is also rather weak. Ronaldo played well but histeam was eliminated by the same side that eliminate Kaka’s and by the same score. Had Brazil drawn England you can bet that they would have been through as well.

4. Portugal is a loaded side. To say that Ronaldo took them “on his own” to Euro 2008 is fanboyish at best and idiotic in the extreme.

5. Ronaldo was horrid in the CL. His scoring rate was less than a third of what it was in EPL play and he completely folded when his team needed him most. Kaka destroyed Man U in the semis and Ronaldo was unable to do anything to get his side back in it. Saying it was fatigue is absurd. Man U was outplayed in every way imaginable.

6. Ronaldo has a worldwied reputation as a diver and a choker. In the FA Cup Final he dissappeared, against France he was MIA and against Milan he may as well have not played. Simply put, he isn’t there yet.

7. You are the one with the obvious bias. M_D and JoeBlue are mostly impartial Chelsea supporters who are just describing what they see. You come across, rightly or not, as one of the millions who sees Ronaldo make a few flashy moves and misses the greater substance of the game. Right now, and last year, Kaka is the superior player. I think so, the guys you are arguing with think so and the rest of the world thinks so.

Dec 6, 2007 @ 3:13

1. Kaka was not brilliant in the last serie A and not brilliant in this serie A too. It shows how much serie A you watch. I’m sorry. He is scoring goals and all that but does not inspire milan to achieve anything in serie a. fifa award is about the contribution and value to the team and team’s achievements.

2. Ronaldo is sizzling. What do you expect, Ronaldo to come out and say “I’m sizzling”. Pele once said called himself a normal player. Now Pele is a normal player?

3. Very weak argument from you. Brazil did not progress but Portugal did. Simple as that. Had they, if they, whether they . . . poor arguments. Talk about what happened and not what would have happened. Brazil got Ghana in the quarters while Portugal got Netherlands. What do you have to say for that?

4. What do you mean by loaded? Are Portugal more loaded than Brazil??? Talks some sense mate. It’s now bordering on the idiocy. Brazil played copa america without Kaka and still won it beating argentina in the final.

5. In the last UCL, he played 11 games and scored 3 goals and assisted 5. Is this horrible?? Something wrong with vocabulary!

6. Of course he didnt play well in certain matches but he played a long season and any player is bound to get some off matches you know, that is if you know football.

So what if he has a reputation. again, so what? has he been banned by FA or UEFA not to play anymore? childish arguments . . chelsea fans have a worldwide reputation of being glory hunters and bandwagoners who jumped in once the money was pumped in by roman. so what are you going to say about this worldwide reputation?

Talking about cheating, Milan are one of the worst cheaters in football.
We all know milan was punished for match fixing. That was not an allegation, they were found guilty and punished by Italian football federation. how can you be sure that kaka’s serie a goals were genuine goals? all bloody match fixings. you send the money bag and the keeper lets in a kaka scorcher!!!

7. Joeblue and M_D impartial??? Now I get a doubt, is bluewinner the same as joeblue??? no other soul in this blog is gonna call joeblue and M_D as unbiased. they are ones most biased like hell. let me not go any further about them or i’ll get banned.

Kevin matey - I’m with you.

And finally, GET THIS FREAKING THING IN YOUR HEAD. THIS IS ‘FIFA PLAYER OF THE YEAR’ award and not ‘THE BEST PLAYER AWARD’. Kaka is better than Ronaldo but in this year 2007, Ronaldo was better than Kaka. Period.

here goes……………….

1.Ronaldo is nthn bt crap when he plays in the CL, yes the competiton that has the highest reputation, playing against the best teams……….. well show pony Ronaldo has been a piece of s@#$, while Kaka has been decimating teams, especially in the biggest game for both teams agnst each other, lol ur lovely Ronaldo was nowhere to be seen……….how must that have felt u guys??? ur idol cheat being overshadowed and shoven out of sight in front of regal class??

2.In the EPL, esp last season every team feared Ronaldo cuz he wld get in the box and jump around and get penalties(thats how he scores the majority of his goals), while teams facing Kaka feared his amaizing vision which used to cut teams into two…………..

3.Ronaldo has done nothing like ‘almost took portugal to euros on his own’, which is a the funniest comment till now, no player is bigger than the team , not even Kaka, let alone this trickster drama boy Ronaldo………lol

last season Ronaldo feigned in the box against Boro, later Southgate came close to abusing him, he won a penalty against Spurs when the score was 0-0, he dived and won Manu the much needed points, and these were not one off incidents he repeated them again and again, and mind u these dives r the reason Manu r champs not us(if we look at the points), last year at the world cup he scored jst once and was part of controversy wether it was the dreadful match against Netherlands where both teams where having a battle not a football match and then he got his ‘good friend’ Rooney sent off, winking away……this season he has already got a red card for headbutting Hughes, while also being part of sex contoversies, imagine SAF’s shock when he came to know that the boys Ronaldo took under him(Nani and Anderson) where first introduced to strippers……….lol, or maybe these two hav seen his funny side when he mentioned he is delighted to wear the no.7 like Bobby Charlton….wow, no surprise there is nothing under those locks of his…..

is this the sort of man who deserves to stand up there and recieve the most prestigious award?? not for me, bt for any football fan it wld be a shame and a disgrace , guess u guys or maybe gals, shld love him no end to be still so crazy on him………….

Kazhakhastan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Finland teams who stand nowhere near Portugal, and the only competition were Serbia and Poland teams which can be called avg at best(no offence to any country), so what r u imagining??? ur pretty boy was the knight in shining armor?? taking a 3rd world country to the Euros singlehandedly??
Have u heard of players like Simao, Petit, Quaresma, Carvalho,Miguel, Ricardo, Maniche, Andrade, Ferreira, Valente, Costinha, Pepe etc not quite c grade players acc to me, all of them play in some of the best clubs in the world, bt still ur show pony did it all by himself??? pls learn football first…………….

it jst dosent take the CL, it takes a cumulative of……….

1.internationals…………..which Kaka has been so amazing at, scores whenever there is a need, creates something out of nothing, already being tipped as the next captain by many, and why not , thats how captains , leaders and champions shld be like
2.league and cups…………..Milan wld hav been nowhere in the top 4 after those points deduction and the dreadful form of most of the other players had it not been for Kaka, Seedorf and Inzaghi
3.Champions League……………need i say anything??
4.Most of all the player should show all the characteristics of a top class professional, humbleness, dedication, mental strength, reactions under pressure, performances when needed, consistency, focus, determination, passion, hunger and most of all the respect and love for the sport and playing it in its true spirit!!!

So after deducing ur playboy to rubble, i wld like to move on and discuss something related to Chelsea, and our football, though i wld forever dream of having Kaka in it sooner or latr, but u cant have everything……………….unless u r Kaka…………….

lot of you guys don’t follow serie a at all. that’s very clear. you guys simply go by what’s written in the papers and magazines, and also what the so called experts say (of course the papers, magazines and experts get paid handsomely!). kaka has been s*** in internationals and serie a matches. as someone who’s watching all milan and juve matches for the whole 90 minutes, i know what i’m talking about.

and again, some of you guys don’t understand english at all or are very foolish. this prize is for the player of this year and it is not for the best player. kaka is a better player than cronaldo but in this year 2007, cronaldo is better than kaka.

jeoblue . . if u say kaka is more noble and he is a better example for kids etc, then we should not allow Milan to play football at all, because what is AC Milan teaching the kids - to cheat and to fix matches, win by illegal means?? if kaka is so conscientious, he must have quit AC Milan once they were found guilty.

we all know AC Milan fixed matches, bribed referees and all that. what happens to the goals scored by kaka etc in those matches? they retain those goals in their record!!also one of the greatest ever footballer, diego maradona, was a notorious character but still won the world player of the year award. he is still regarded as the player of the century ahead of pele.

I really had a laugh reading some of the earlier comments about ronaldo being average.wat a load of BS!anyway i feel it should be ronaldo(obviously!).he has been superb.more than kaka and is being judged on two games.that is the truth.kakas AC milan havent won a home game in serie a for God knows how long and these games are week in week out unlike the champions league.ronaldo on the other hand is top scorer in the league(oh wait adebayor scored).he is heading for top scorer then(derby this weekend!)and he has missed 4 games! Wat if he didnt?he is the joint top scorer in the champions league this year.supposedly he has been terrible in that too?as a take of my rose tinted glasses I see what will happen.kaka will win the award!but if anyone is to get the award ahead of ronaldo.its kaka.he is a marvelous player.i really hope anderson will follow in is footsteps.dam those rose tinted glasses!
