Chelsea vs West Ham | 01-Dec-2007 @ 12:45 UK
Finally, we get back to real premier league business (apologies to Derby County!) after a long break. Avram can enjoy the luxury of good set of fit players to choose from. Of course we’ve said enough about ACN and having quality strikers by then, or strikers gaining quality by then. All said, I’m sure than ACN is not as big a challenge as it’s made out to be, especially when you have very good back up players in the squad and that’s the reason why we bought players like Sidwell and Pizarro.
Are these matches (West Ham at home) where you can play Sheva, Sidwell and Pizarro? Answer is Yes, if you have the confidence in the players or if you have confidence in yourself to turn the match around with your tactics and substitutions. Answer is No, if want those three points for today and are not ready to risk anything for it. I have a feeling that Avram is still not confident of his own capabilities as an effective football coach for a top club in a world class league. He seems to rely more on the players and less on himself to get the results that he wants. Of course, it is the players who kick the ball on the pitch, but the coach should have the remote control, right?
At the beginning of this season we seemed to be settling down nicely with a 4-4-2 with wide midfielders, but now we are sticking to 4-3-3 match after match with minimum opportunity for second string even with the substitutions. Drogba’s biggest strength is in the air and Sheva’s best is on the ground. Avram prefers passing around on the ground and he plays Drogba more than Sheva.
Coming back to this match, West Ham are good opponents. I always enjoy watching and us playing West Ham. They have lost some key players since last season such as Tevez, Mascherano, Harewood and Benayoun. When you play Carlton Cole as your regular striker, that certainly speaks about your player drain. In fact, I like Carlton Cole since his Chelsea years. He was a good player who I thought would never become better. For a big club like West Ham to rely on him as ‘the man’ to get them the goals must be an honour for him. Still, I don’t see a goal threat from West Ham, not certainly at the Bridge.
In our team news, the only players that would miss are Cech, Carvalho, Ballack, Malouda, Ferreira and of course, Essien for that dubious last minute red card against Derby. I’d love to see a distorted 4-4-2 with Sheva and Drogba, Joe Cole as the right midfielder, Kalou as the left winger. Lampard and Mikel should be the central midfielders. Cudicini should be protected by Terry, Alex, Belletti and Bridge.
With just another month to go for the transfer window, the injury problems look smaller and smaller. The fact that we have already qualified for the champions league next round and the next champions league match is more than 2 months later, makes me feel lot better.
Avram thinks that we are in contention for all the cups, rightfully so. He says:
We want to succeed in the Champions League, FA Cup, and the Premier League. We are in a good position to fight for everything. You can’t belong to big clubs and not want to succeed in every competition.
Well, he missed out on League Cup, but that’s fine we know that he meant that too!
This weekend has all the possibilities to be a very crucial one, with our title rivals taking on decent oppositions. Arsenal play at Villa park while Liverpool host Bolton. Man Utd has an easy game on Monday against Fulham. We need three points from anywhere, preferably from our boot. I see 2-0 or 3-0 depending on Avram’s choice of formation and players.
You can call this a bad preview, and you could be right about it.

Hey BC and everyone,
It’s been a long time since I’ve been on the blog, I really like what you’ve done with the place BC! I’ll try to start participating more and more.
I’ve been trying to study football more and more and I’m very impressed with the way Chelsea’s been behaving particularly after the departure of JM. I agree with you about AG’s apparent lack of confidence in his tactics; I’m not sure how much of the good football has been from him, and how much the reaping of what JM sewed. Also, getting Ten Cate has been superb for us.
All in all, I like this new-feel Chelsea.
I want to see another 4-3-3, though, looking something like this:
————Cudicini———
Belleti—Alex—Terry—Cole
————Mikel———–
—Sidwell——-Lampard—
–SWP——————–
——————–Sheva
———Drogba———-
The longer, less congested shape has worked for our benefit, as we’ve been moving the ball freely and beautifully. I hope to see Pizarro playing a bit more as well; I find him more efficient, and therefore more important, than Sheva.
Well, as always keep it up BC! I’m glad to be part of this blog again!

chelsea were doing amazing in their 4-4-2 at the begginning of the year and it was enjoyable to watch now this stupid 4-3-3 formation is boring to watch and it is upsetting the other strikers who dont play.
i loved the first match against birmingham where it was very exciting to watch and we got the result at the end.
Who knows whats going on with malouda?
This is my team for today:

I hope Kalou play better this time, he should know when’s the right time to shoot or to make thru ball and i hope Sheva’ll get more ball in the pen box. We should get a goal in 10 min after kick off or in 20min at least, that’ll build team confidence and make the opponent lose their calm. I wanna win big.. score lots of goals because we’re capable of that.. don’t mind if we concede goal, we just have to score more. With Drogba on form, he’ll score whenever he get the chance. I like to see Sheva score everytime he’s on the pitch. Go CHELSEA!!

is it a coinsedence that ally ou guys are going for 4-4-2 because essien is out? and because sheva has said hes unhappy?
12. mike ayad
Den i always loved the 4-4-2. Everytime i write on this blog before a match i always ask for the 4-4-2 and not the 4-3-3. I like having :
2 centre mids
2 wingers
and 2 strikers
this makes a good balance between the team and it is enjoyable watching lots of attacking football.
13. Den
but why change the formtion when we are playing well with the 4-3-3?

green is an amazing goal keeper. only planned good movement will help us beat him.
i expect a 1-2 win for us. lets rock the hammers.
cheers

we definitely cannot afford to draw or lose a game… so will grant start with sheva?cudacini has looked a bit shadow of himself recently… so we need to get an early goal to kill the game.
last time we defeated them 2-0 expect the same this time too… lets see.
will we again end the game with 3 strikers on?
17. MatBlue
AG needs to play Sheva, give the guy some playing time . it will boost his confidence. play him and Drogba in a 4-4-2 formation. especially if he is to play during the ACN. i hope we beat the hammers 3 -1. Go Chelsea

Salomon Kalou returns to the starting line-up for Chelsea today, replacing Shaun Wright-Phillips out wide in a 4-3-3 formation, while Wayne Bridge steps in for Ashley Cole at left-back.
It is Bridge’s first start since Cole returned from injury, while Kalou reclaims his place following his goalscoring performance at Pride Park a week ago.
Steve Sidwell makes a second successive league start, today at the expense of Michael Essien, who begins his three-match suspension following his dismissal at Derby last week.
There is still no Petr Cech or Ricardo Carvalho, both absent through injury, and so Carlo Cudicini and midweek goal scorer Alex continue to deputise.
Chelsea will line up in a 4-3-3 formation as follows:
23 Carlo Cudicini
35 Juliano Belletti
33 Alex
26 John Terry (c)
18 Wayne Bridge
12 John Mikel Obi
8 Frank Lampard
9 Steve Sidwell
10 Joe Cole
11 Didier Drogba
21 Salomon Kalou

IN SHORT…..
Half time and the only decent chances have come Westham’s way. They’re closing us down, working really hard, even though the possession stat at one stage midway showed 71% to us, we haven’t been able to do much with it.
Drogba and Kalou are having long balls lumped up to them and are having difficulty keeping hold of the ball.
When we try to play it on the ground, everytime th eball goes into midfield, there are westham players snapping at our heels.
JOE COLE has been invisible amongst others. Thought he’d shine today, but isn’t getting an inch of space.
MIKEL on a yellow card for a clumsy, needless backtackle — kalou likewise.
West ham have only looked on occasions for the left side with Etherington, or Carlton Cole. Solano’s also looked busy.
Cudicini has done well so far and our defence hasn’t been under much pressure apart from Solano latching onto a bouncing ball through the middle of our CB and clipping a lobbed shot just inches over.
I missed some of th early periods of action, so the best chance — if you can call it thta– for us was a a rolling cross in from the right, Drogba dummied and there ball eluded our player running gioalwards behind him…
We should be winning more of the tackles in midfield and keeping it better.
It just seems like our players are having difficulty controling bouncing balls with Westham boys looking like they’re pumped on Adrenaline…
They could tire in the first half quick, but we really need to make some changes…
24. Blue Champion
0-0 after 65 minutes. I’ve started to feel a little jittery! A goal from somewhere please!
25. goddammit
a late goal for the hammers and our home record will be gone. c’mon grant show your thing. do your stuff. step in and make the difference!!!!!
26. Nihongo Blue
