Schalke 0-0 Chelsea | Huff, Puff and a Point!

The game ends in a goalless draw. Crucial point for our progress to the knockout stage. With Valencia losing at home to Rosenborg(?!), we are almost certain to make it. I watched only the first half and I can safely say that this was one of our worst attacking performances of this season.

Of course I’m happy that we’ve got an important point and we will proceed to the knockouts after dispatching the mighty Rosenborg at their backyard. I was very disappointed with our defensive performance in our last match against Wigan. And we all thought, we preserve some energy for the mid-week champions league game. I don’t think the ‘energy-preserving’ concept is as valid as it was last season simply because we have a very good fit squad to choose from.

In this match, we were poor all over the pitch. Defensively, we should have conceded a goal or two. Schalke were surely the better team and I don’t think even one soul who watched the match would have a different opinion. Bridge was good on the offensive but missed some important moments at the back, allowing a few chances from his side of the pitch. Cech got injured at around half time and Cudicini had to be brought on. It doesn’t look like a major one and it looks like Cech should okay soon.

In the midfield and in the attack, we could hardly string a few passes together and that’s the worrying part. Earlier in another post I had said that, no matter how much we concede, we look like outscoring the opponent every single time. In this match, it was a nightmare to see every move and every attack was so predictable for Schalke that they didnt have to play their best football to keep us quiet.

Avram did admit it was not our best game but I won’t buy his argument about the away game in a champions league. We are after all champions league contenders right?

We wanted to win but it was not easy. It was a very good crowd and Schalke needed to win because a draw for them is not good enough. This was not a bad result but not our best game. After so many good games in a short time, we can play one game that was not such a high-level game. It was an away game against a side that feels good at home and I can understand that, it is a good atmosphere here. The Champions League is not like the Premier League. It is not so easy to play away from home, especially when the home side needs points.

Please see this match highlights and decide for yourself.

Avram says that we wanted to win but we did not have that determination to make one decent in-the-face attack. May be we thought this is an inconsequential match. Even if we had lost this one, players must have thought we can always beat Rosenborg away and go through. A quick wake-up call: Rosenborg just beat Valencia at Estadio Mestalla, something we considered as a fantastic milestone result and they in fact won 2-0. Bloody hell!

Elsewhere, Liverpool crushed Besiktas 8-0 playing exactly the opposite way to ours. Very strong and decisive in attacks and solid in defending. Crouch scored two. I’m happy for him. I thought he was getting a raw deal from Rafa. Crouch is a matchwinner (I can’t believe I’m saying this!) and he should be used more often.

We’re on course for progression to knockouts but we certainly have some areas to work on. Schalke have simply corrected the mistakes that they made in the previous leg and we continued to play the same way. Time for some intelligent, tactical football.

Awful performance. One of the worst I have seen. No discipline, No passion, No Hunger, No Tactics, No team Spirit… simply Sir Jose missed!

Even Roman’s car driver knew Sheva is the king in UEFA CL though not in EPL, still wasn’t given a decent role @ Mestalla & @ Gelsenkirchen is quite disappointing. Dunno what the feck Grant trying to prove by always snubbing Sheva, though Grant himself knew that he is not good enough to lead the Chelsea Army! Sheva please go back to your home & heaven Milan or else Roman ‘n’ co will destroy U! A God can’t become a Joker in a year time!

Moreover, Schalke, who have struggled with injuries were only able to name five substitutes for this fixture compared with the allowed seven. Whereas we had almost our full team nearly fit. Well this sums it all…

P.S: I am happy about the result since I live in Frankfurt, so dun wann a German team to get beaten ;) though Schalke fully deserved to bag 3 pts from this game :(

A VERY BAD match , i hope if schalke get a goal so we speed a little in our very weak performance , no good midfield , all the passes are wrong , belleti and joe they didn’t give us any attack and all their passes are wrong , 3 midfielder against 4 from schalke they took the midfield and presseure on us , no attack at all , very bad game , obi mickel in belleti what is this , shawn - so selfish , malouda all the time he is blocked , simply no style grant and i think jose style was difiently better .

i’m really dissapointed with Malouda .. he’s playin very poor .. can’t drible single player .. i think we should play with SWP&Joey in the wings .. Schalke deserved to win this game and by the way we play i think this is a big point and we’re 90% in the knock-out round ..

Well 1 point, better than nothing, but absolutely a lacklusture performance, i wished they scored a goal jus to fire the players up, but didnt happen, they had far more chances and they looked like a decent team, i dont know why put players on bench when you are not going to use them, sheva, pizz, kalou all on bench and no one is used, as much as i like drogba, he’s a certain type of player, you can tell hes not up for today match, he did his bits but didnt really threaten the defence as much as he can, why wouldnt grant try any other forward combination other than drogba, why cant he play sheva and kalou or both pizz and sheva with 2 wingers. may be players are not too bothered when they know they will some one get through the knock out stages. i have been watching chelsea game and missed the 8-0 thrashing by liverpool, good for them, they are going out soon, hopefully.

0-0 is not that bad specially when we missed Cech , I don’t want to say Carlo is not a good GK , to be honest with you I like him better than Cech. But Cech injury affected all players.
I did not watch the game.
Well Rosenborg beat Valencia, it shows Rosenborg is a really good team so our 1-1 result during jose tenure was not a bad result.

God the negativity is unbearable!

Cheer up!! We got an away point against a fired up Schalke side. It wasn’t necessarily our players playing so poorly, it was just that Schalke closed us down whenever we got the ball, so credit to them. Mikel made a big difference to our midfield, pity he didn’t start. And the same with SWP, no idea why he didn’t start? Malouda has not been on form, SWP has. Yet AG keeps him warming the bench. Pity.

Joe Cole was pretty poor today especially, didn’t offer much attack until he came into the centre for that one pass to Drogs. He should drift in more often, he is very deadly when he does.

So yes, wasn’t our best match. But for goodness sake cheer up. We don’t have to win every match, and you should understand that. Valiant effort by Schalke, hopefully next game though we can start to dominate again. And go Rosenborg! lol.

We were lucky to have come away with a valuable point. And the good part of it is Valencia lost at home to Rosenborg. Wonder never end. We just need to win the next Champions league match.

Mikel should always start in our midfield to have the midfield stabilized, Makalele is aging. We can also see how did Mikel changed the game briefly when he was brought in. And moreover we have more strikers on bench , I was expecting a change for Molouda with Sheva coming in but I think AG and his team went to Germany to get a point.

Things will definitely change in our couples of games together.

2 problems.
1. where was swp?
2. why play 4.3.3?

playing 4.3.3 in a game against schalke in schalke where schalke is hungry for points you dont play 4.3.3. we did’nt have any midfielders so we couldnt get the ball pass the midfield line. a 4.4.2 would be a lot better. the play would be a lot faster and the attacking would be a lot more. + the defense would be better to. and why put joe cole in the game for 90 minutes when he gets tired after 45. swp would played better in joe spot the rest of the 45 minutes. avram should know that a 4.3.3 doesnt always work.

why make such an issue out of this game , agreed we dint play well , but we still got a point frm a very difficult place , we r on top of the CL group , and qualification is emminent………………
Drogba was completely rubbish , and missed a golden chance , and i hav no idea why Malouda gets a start every match when SWP is on a rampage and Joey Cole is what he is , maybe he wasant at his best but i really believe playing two attcking fullbacks is a stupidity when ur wingers dont like to come back and help , especially playing away frm home…………………..

Anyways lets just relax , Ballack is cmn bak soon , the winter market approaches , we r sittin at the top of UCL , at no.3 in EPL and playing well (except for this match), giv the guy Avram some respite.

Avram Grant is not even fit enough to coach a middle-size Premier Legaue club. Let alone a big four club!

What is he doing at Chelsea, should we end the season without a trophy, to finally end this sillyness brought on to us by Abromavich?

Did Avram get his job on merit and merit alone?

joeblue - why do you think we should not make an issue out of this. we played like crap. there was no plan or strategy. we were not playing to even draw, we were playing to lose!!!

avram is a poor tactician and he has proved it more than once.

now don’t pounce on me cuz i hate jose morinho. i just hate him like he burnt my house. dont compare or whatever. avram is just a waste of space.

all good things that are happening to chelsea now are because of ten cate only. we would very soon be playing like barca did under ten cate a few seasons back. wherever avram has chances to do well, he has failed miserably. under avram, we wont be champions. under ten cate we will be, even this season.

I can’t see much change in Chelsea from Jose’s era….same long balls to Drogba, no link up game upfront, wingers moving like headless chickens, erratic passing and add to it their efforts to make back heel passes when they can’t make simple staright passes….there is little urgency in attack….ovarall a drab performance….

Hi Guys,

Horrible performance…but is this our worst European performance in the Roman era???

I think our games against Real Betis and Wreder Bremen in the previous years were worse than this

We should also give credit to Schalke for playing the way they did..

One thing that concerned me was that we didnt use our bench properly..we had sheva, kalou n pizzaro on the bench..Grant could have used them to change the game…

Jose was good at changing games with good tactical substitutions..Grant hasnt displayed that ability so far..he better learn fast

Hi guys, this is the wake up call some of us warned about in the wake of the euphoria and ecstasy displayed after we took apart Man Citi. we said it was really down to the fact that Man city gave us too much space and did not come into the match feeling like underdogs who needed to fight like mad to even contain us. i specifically referred to the the previous mid week match against Schalke to point out that tein cate’s new style had not yet brought about the transformation some of us were trumpetting.

This was the much needed wake up call. As for Grant changing matches thro substitutions like Jose does does lets not even go there- The man is a fake article- it does not come any worse than it. Only Roman is still unable to detect that.

My faith tho lies in the spirit of the boys, the great support of the fans and the little tein cate and Steve Clark are doing despite the heavy odds.

By the way, Is Alex/Riccy combination becoming as super as that of Terry/Riccy? Just a question.

our main problem is that we have a team of individuals….players may be together in spirit but in footballing terms they are not that cohesive a unit…our attack lack coherence in terms of passing, ball movement, players positioning…if these are sorted we will win with flair…problem is that current set of players is Jose’s and most of them thus suit his footballing style….essien can run but can’t be creative, drogba is more of an athlete and his immense power and fabulous athleticism give him edge over defenders but when it comes to ball movemenet he is like a cement sack, lampard is also not that much in play maker mold, malouda has not been a revelation so far.. too slow, swp makes amazing runs on flank but then thats all, he doesn’t really know what to do near box…all in all our attack has always been disjointed and thats the main issue which needs to be sorted out…I don’t know if new players will make a change or current ones can adjust to new philosophy…

what chelsea needs to do is to get rid of old players like ballack, pizarro, sheva cause they cost allot. we need young players that gives a 100 % and wants to show off. we need players like richards, nani, anderson, ronaldo, ben arfa, walcott. players that have a lot to proove. sheva and pizarro they had their time. chelsea wants players that can play fasst. most of our players are gething old and weak. the players we bought this summer is players that other teams want to get rid of. like pizarro, malouda and belletti. malouda was good in lyon but they have young players that can do bether in a year or 2 in his spot. chelsea needs to think like that. they need to build a team that could play good for at least 5 years and players that could give their life for the team.

rightly said……especially in a fast league like EPL young fast players are very necessary…old slow players can’t do much no matter how much skills they possess…..most of Chelsea players are on upper side of age and hence are very slow….we really need to phase put oldies and invest in young blood who can serve the club for long time…

@BC
I Was busy………….but i strongly feel we performed worst in 2nd half [wigan]…………to be honest in the schalke game we were really not that bad as media has made it out to be……………their hitting the post[they were unlucky]was the main reason why media made us so poor…………it was okay…………there was a lot of critisism for belletti, alex, malouda in particular…………the problem with belletti and malouda that first don’t tackle………second doesn’t wanna get tackled…………….i m yet to see malouda trying to beat a single defender…………and i m yet to see belletti going for a tackle………..belletti wasn’t that bad caus he was few of the players who was actually pushing the ball forward……………….another thing essien is not meant to attack……..and he is not doing justice to his new role…………we badly need ballack or any cam…………….essien is pure cm……….neither too defensive…….neither too attacking……he can win the ball, run with the ball and sometimes shoot but that’s bout it after making the run he doesn’t know exactly what to do……..mikel is arguably our best player in midfield…………..he has performing consistently……positive of mikel..everythin essien has + good passes and minus tackling……………maka should be off sooner than later…..in 4-3-3 if ballack can pick up his form and if mikel can bring out more such performances then essien will be on the bench………in 4-4-2………i guess essien will be a better pick off current form caus he will have more options of passing……………………..if i m to pick the team from current squad in 4-3-3

Haha you really think roman will buy all this players, and you really think they will come to chelsea when they have chances to go to real, barca, milan or inter. im not saying they are bether teams im just saying chelsea is very
unbalanced right now. other players in other clubs read that Jose M has been sacked and players or not gething along, drogba wants to quit. who the f… wants to play in a team like that. you think ben arfa is a chelsea fan and rather comes to chelsea than real. thats bull….! roman has to pay a lot for players to come here otherwise they wont. i want the players to want to come to chelsea. and if thats going to happen it has to be changes in the club. other players have to be sure that the manager/coach decides changes in the game and not the owner that really dont know one thing about fotball. i rather se young players like sinclair in chelsea than ben arfa if he playing in chelsea just for the money. and 27. DEN you really think it was because of Avram chelsea played good against man city. it was because of the players. lampard essien drogba they are one of the best players in the world, my little brother could coach chelsea that day and they still win 6-0. avram was just lucky his 4.3.3 formation was a good choice that day cause man citys defense was crap. they made chelsea look alot better. but hell yea they desirved that win! f..k avram and f..k roman, chelsea is to big for those fu..ers. i loved chelsea before roman so i dont give a shit about him, if he dosnt know whats good fot the team then we dont need him.

@36 well said, you need players who enjoy playing for the club, ofcourse money does comes into equation but, it shouldnt be all about money.

I think we have players who can perform and change things around, but somtimes the attitude sucks. i am not complaining that they are not giving 100 percent but, if you see the game against shalke, even wigan, its poor performance. it could be due to lots of reason, against wigan we scored 2 early goals and the players know the game is over, against shalke, they knew even if we draw we can still go through, as long as we win one more. and before the game many players would have made up the mind, as some one said, many of them has done it in the past, and they are not going to give 100 percent when they know they can get through next level with out any sweat.
you need young players who are willing to show what they can do with the ball, and players who are ready to take on players, on pace, agility, athleticism, power, dribble anything , having said that i am not sayin old players are crap, if you look at milan last year and Man utd, old vs young, they destroyed the young, but week in week out its impossible , they wont have the legs to catch up, simple as that. however, i think we will have a good chance, during coming weeks, rooney is out for a month, and am sure it will affect Man utd, during the match against blackburn, i hope soo, which means, they could drop couple of points, we are playing against everton, don take them as a light weight, they are playing good, but a win should be on our side, and man city and portsmouth play each other, so there a big big chance for us to go even closer on the top of the table, arsenal man utd on 27 points, man city on 25 points, chelsea on 24 and rest on 22, so if we win, we are on 27 points, and man utd drop points, well it looks very good, blackburn are a decent team, and i hope reading to do a miracle and beat arsenal.

NB: I met the legend of football “PELE”, he was in sheffield for the match between sheffield FC and Inter Milan.
