Middlesbrough 0-2 Chelsea | That’s Drogba for you!
Goodness me! When was the last time we scored an early goal? Good away win with a clean sheet against a tricky opponent. Drogba scored a timely and brilliant goal just to show what kind of professional he is, on the pitch. Sad thing is I could not watch this match fully. I was on and off and on . . . and off and on.
To score a goal within 10 minutes is one of the wonderful things that can happen in football. The players no longer under pressure, fans can sit back and relax, coach can try something different, and even if you concede you’re not losing! The goal had to come from Drogba. After all the off-pitch dramatics, the last thing Drogba wanted was a mediocre performance from him and the world saying “he wants to leave and that’s why he is playing crap”.
Looking back at that goal, that was a smart and quick throughpass from the ever-reliable Lampard. The way Drogba took the goal was brilliant. He was one-on-one with the keep from a tight angle from the left. With the goalkeeper approaching him and expecting a rightfooted shot at the near post, Drogba had the confidence and skill to slot a leftfooter at the farpost. Didier Drogba at his best. That’s why I like him. On the pitch, he never gives anything less than 100% - irrespective of what feelings he has off the pitch.
And then the other goal. That was a good plan whoever thought of it - Avram or Ten Cate or Steve Clarke or Terry or Lampard. So we add Alex to our long list of free kick takers and set piece scorers. The header he scored against Arsenal in the last season’s champions league is still fresh in my mind. This goal by Alex should certainly be a goal that he would cherish. While has made Avrum realise that he is a better bet than Ben Haim in defence, now here is his other dimension.
With my partial viewing, I gathered that everyone played well with special mention to Paulo doing a fine job at the left back. We played well as a team. Well, I just read some of you saying that we were playing short passes. I thought that’s not new. We’ve always played short passes but not quick ones. Even in this match, we did not play quickly but solidly.
Avram said this about the match and Didier Drogba:
We played good and we won. I’m happy with win and happy are playing better from game to game. We started well, scored and could have scored more. Alex has a terrific shot and it was a fantastic goal and the first goal was a good combination too. I have seen Didier in the last month in training, in my room, on the pitch and I haven’t had one problem. If he has done something off the pitch and he regrets it, it’s good. He is not a negative person. If he was negative on the pitch or in the dressing room or when he spoke to me, that is another story. But it’s not like this. Players need to speak on the pitch, and he did that very well.
Table-wise, things are improving. We’ve crept upto the 7th now. All that we need is our rivals (not Everton, Man City etc) to drop points. If we keep winning and if our rivals lose a couple of matches, we’ll be right there with a shout. We need our big players at least for this season to make any claim or challenge. See, the ball Drogba got from Lampard today, I don’t see Sheva or Kalou or Pizarro making much out of that, based on their form or abilities now.
Liverpool should be happy to get one own goal by the opponent, two penalties, two red card for the opponent - all in the same away derby match. Everton could not have done any more favours for Rafa. Arsenal keeps winning and Man Utd are back among the goals.
One great thing amidst all nonsense from the Press and ourselves, we’re recovering and doing well on the pitch. If we beat Schalke mid-week and mighty Man City at weekend, we have a fortnight of manageable matches that would give us more time to consolidate. Let’s what we feel same time next week.
Oh, before I sign off, I leave you with this wonderful picture - talk about playing out of position, covering your colleague and killer instinct! Younger Neville continues to surprise us!

Good Game, We played quickand short passes. Many of the passes not accurate but I am seeing changes from the team’s style of playing. Though at the moment it looks boring and slow. By the time the whole players get used to the style then the passes will be fast and solid. More importantly we need different players to play quick style as some of our players are not built that way. Hope we keep winning and we will be back ontop. Up Blues

hey guys I heard about Van der Vart and Huntelar in the summer is that true??

the first 13 minutes were pure bliss………..we were playing like the ultimate champions……………….it was nice to see short passing instead of our typical passing between the defense and then trying to give a long ball to drogba………..or lamps…………..if grant n cate can give us the kind of football i witnessed in 13 min………..then vote for avram for prime minister…………..when alex scored………….i jumped out of my couch and almost spiled the coffee

Good game , good result , Pompey and Rovers r not gonna maintain consistency , especially when they hav tricky away games or loose important players to injuries , Man City………If we beat them at the Bridge next weekend wld propel our morale sky high , we r 7th in the table but not too far off in points , just 7 off the leader , just get 3 points each game and we wld be back in the running not long!!
Its a fact i m not expecting any titles this season , especially because of the strange things that hav happened and those crucial points lost , but watching us play like this and trying to get back up from the ashes makes me gloat!!!
Hail Stamford Bridge ,Hail Chelsea!!!
Keep rollin!!
6. joeblue
and not to forget that scorcher by Alex , dubbed it as the ‘rocket from the tank’ , lol , amazing goal!!

Mikel was reportedly one of our best players yesterday. That’s good to hear cos he’s stunk the last few games.
We’ve contaced Van Dere Vaart agent already, at least that’s waht’s being said. Arnesen wants to push through some of his dutch signings. Huntelaar has already said he plans to leave, so that could be a pretty solid story true.
I’d be happier with Karim Benzema coming. This guy is doing the business for lyon and France. He’s only eighteen but already properly built. Scores all kinds of goals and will get better.
Even has a trick or two as you might see form this video…

(BTW, Fantastic track for the vid. I challenge anyone to listen to it twice and say it isn’t a catchy bit of music. Not normally my kinda thing but…)

I did not get to watch the match. Will someone give me an idea of player ratings- how did the guys do?
am hearin about short passing game- did it reach the height of the sleek passing game we witnessed in our opening match against Bham this season?

I thot toures free kick was awsome wen he drilled it from 25 yardss but my worddddd , alex could hit the ball, i saw him score a goal for sao paulo about 5 yrs back, he scored from almost the centre line about 45 yrds, he belted it, i think we should let him have a go defnitly untill JT returns and give lampard a bit of break in free kicks and let Alex take control of these long range free kicks, never know it might fly in every time.
I have a strong feeling chelsea is slowly coming back and if you see the fixtures coming up, liverpool vs arsenal, watever happens, one has to loose, i would be more happy if both drew and then Arsenal take on man utd, again, i would love to see both dropping points, a draw would be ideal, and chelsea play at home to man city and away to wigan which we can win if we r careful. so Arsenal, liverpool, man utd all will loose some points, and we can have all our 6 points, hopefully.
but as i said before in my prev posts we need stikers to cover for drogba, Huntellaar would be great, but i dont know if he has enough pace upfront.

hi pal Mourofessien!!
The players gelled well as a group , yes there were gaps quite a few times in the defence , but still it appeared to be a real change from the way we hav been playing under Jose , concentration was very focused on short passing and sudden quick thru balls ,
some really cool stuff played by Joey , nd it was a hell lot better than the Birmingham game where we conceded 2 goals out of nothing and the defence were sleeping their heads off!!!
Cech——-as always great wen u need him to!!!
Ferreira——played at LB , good performance , got forward and back in time and played in tandem…..7.5/10
Alex———-can he shoot or what??? amazing tackles and play , typical brazilian , some miskicks but as dint miss Terry at all……. 9/10
Carvy———dependable and ever ready , thats Carvy for u ,solid , 8/10
Beletti——–not much gng forward , was having loads of trouble with Downing thogh……..5/10
Lampard——–we kno wat he does best , unlucky not to score , got some shooting chances in good areas , or shld we say ‘Lamps areas’.lol.gr8 thru ball……8.5/10
Essien———-like a bull never stops , full of energy , not his best , but once he got the ball was unwilling to let it go at all, full commitment………..7.5/10
Mikel————The kid is learnin , but needs to be more versatile and helpful in attacks , otherwise decent enogh………7/10
Joey———–What shld i say , he is my fav player(as i hav said so often) and not for no reason , skills , stle , thru balls , the defence cried whenever he had the ball and our players were queing up in the centre , pity they cldnt take more advantage of his cunning passes in the box………..9/10
Malouda———–overdoes his tricks everytime , has the ability but just cant get the right moment , lacks good decison making ability…………….5.5-6/10
Drogba————he comes and he plays just as we expect him to , with his heart on his sleeve and his legs running tirelessly , and ofcourse those golden boots cant stop scorin……………9/10
So all in all a very promising and sounding performance , gettin better every match and playin some different stuff as well , keep it goin lads!!!

Thanks JoeBlue for that update. Its good seeing that gradually we are rediscovering our self belief and playing well and winning. I definitely think that Valencia win has done the spirit of the team a world of good.
yet to watch the match still but if you say that in the attacking area we were better than we played against Bham, then ot must be great stuff.
I have a soft spot for Alex and Belleti. am glad they are settling in nicely. My favourite forward player is Pizarro. Am still praying that he really gets more opportunities to show what a talented player he is.
I look forward to Bridgey coming back next to cement his place at LB. Needless to say I prefer him to A Cole. I feel he gives us more ptions going forward than A Cole does.
KTBFFH. My new level of optimism comes from the presence of Tein Cate. i feel a bit more easy knowing that he is around to help make things better. Am like Drogba in that regard.

no probs mate!!!
In that Birmingham match we played very wel but did some basic things very poorly , this was a much more complete performance back to front!!!

I wish I could have watched the match. Who knows if Drogba will leave the club? At least he is man enough to play and do it well. Team morale? Maybe it ain’t what it used to be. But, someone is doing something right.

What Robben has to say about CFC!!!!!!!!!
——————-
Real Madrid winger Arjen Robben insists he has no grudges against Chelsea or former manager Jose Mourinho.
The winger denies he was forced out of Stamford Bridge by former Blues boss Mourinho, but he admits the time was right to move on.
Robben told the Sunday Mirror: “When I look at the way things went at Chelsea in the last year, it was not a nice time for me. Sometimes we played 4-3-3, sometimes it was 4-4-2
“And every time he put me on the bench, I was so angry. Before the League Cup Final he told me I was substitute again.
“That made me rage with anger. Thank God he put me on, and I was able to be decisive for the team. That lifted my spirit a tiny bit. But when I think about most of our Champions League matches, I get fed up. We were always playing so defensively, there was no room for me. In the end I had just had enough. I wanted to play football again. At Real I am more important as an attacker.”
Does Robben bear a grudge against Mourinho after everything that has happened? He said: “I’ve become a stronger player mentally. Whatever has happened, I do admire Mourinho for the fact that he is a top-class coach.
“I learnt a lot from him. The way he works with players, the way he thinks about football - it is all very impressive and every player must have learnt from Mourinho’s coaching at Chelsea.
“But in the end it is not Mourinho who improves you as a player. I improved myself. Mourinho decided the tactics and the line-up for each match, but it is up to each player to be of more value for the team.
“I just treasure all the good moments I had at Chelsea and I forget the rest.”
Robben says he has not spoken a word to Mourinho or any of the Chelsea players since he left in a hurry.
“I hardly spoke to anybody at the club. I do regret that. I would have liked to say goodbye properly to a lot of people. But it all happened in a big rush.
“On the Wednesday I heard there was a deal between Real and Chelsea, on the Thursday I was on a plane to Madrid.
“Even if I had wanted, I could not have said goodbye.
“I have always had a good rapport with the fans. This is why I wrote something in the match programme the other day. I wanted to thank them for supporting me in bad times or when I was injured.
“The Chelsea fans only saw the real Arjen Robben in the first season. Not in the second or third year I was at the club.”

JoseHoliday :
at 90 th minute , result is 1-1 , ball is finding the net ,diving and catching the ball by him is the best decision. Imagine, if Howard saved the penalty , the result would be 1-1 .

Alex should be playing tight end in the NFL. Of course, then he wouldn’t be able to show off that massive boot of his. Guy can rocket those set pieces from anywhere on the pitch.
The stand up thing about the kick: he didn’t try to take in on the wall side. He put a small amount of swerve inside out to the upper right 90 where the keeper was more situated, and the ball still scorched the back of the net. That’s skill if one has ever seen it.

How will Chelsea replace Drogba?
———————————–
“They know my will to leave, something has irrevocably broken between me and Chelsea” said Didier Drogba in an interview with France Football last week.
His well taken goal against Middlesborough and his actions at the final may indicate the public nature of his comments were now a source of regret for him, but with the giants of European football now being linked with him it does seem likely that the 29 year-old Ivorian will move on at some stage in the near future.
Drogba has been the focal point of Chelsea’s attack over the last 3 years and was last year the Premiership’s top goalscorer. It was only Christiano Ronaldo’s extraordinary performances that denied him scooping a handful of Player of the Season awards for form that would normally have have won it with ease.
If Chelsea are to continue to enjoy such tactical flexibility logic would dictate that they need to sign a sucessor with not only a goalscoring pedigree but also a physical stature that would enable him to hold the ball and bring others into play. So who could Avram Grant bring in to replace him?
Adriano? He has been heavily linked with Chelsea previosuly but it would seem unlikely that the 25 year-old Brazilian would even be mentioned in the press at this stage. He is man of undoubted talent, as his 25 goals in 35 games for Brazil testify, but has been in a terrible run of form over the last 18 months with Inter Milan and it is improbable he will be given much of a chance to rectify that by January. If the 6ft 3” forward could keep out of the nightclubs he has been reported to frequent (and led to Brazil coach, Dunga, to call for a “change in his behaviour”) he may well regain his touch, and he would have the advantage of not being cup-tied in the Champions League, but it would be an expensive gamble on the part of Avram Grant.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar? The 24 year-old Ajax striker is perhaps the rising star in European football. He is equally adept with both feet, strong, good in the air and capable of scoring a wide variety of goals. He has an excellent goals-to-games ratio and tops the all-time goalscoring charts for the Dutch Under 21s. Of course, none of this will be news to Chelsea’s new Assistant Manager, Henk ten Cate, who was until this month his manager in Amsterdam. The 6 ft 1” striker would apparently cost in the region of £18 million and is perhaps one of the favourites.
Samuel Etoo? The Cameroonian international has history with Chelsea, but with Mourinho gone and Thierry Henry’s place in Barcelona’s side exacerbating the infamous problems he had last season with Frank Rijkaard in particular, the 26 year-old may jump at the chance to move to another club with Champions League aspirations. It is worth pointing though that he will also be at the African Nations tournament in January and there is a question mark over his impact on team spirit. He possesses undoubted talent but should be considered a long shot.
Dmitar Berbatov? Perhaps Drogba’s successor could come from within London. Berbatov has been the subject of much controversy after a ‘trible snub’ to Martin Jol as he continously ignored Jol’s wishes for him to warm up in Monday’s away match at Newcastle. With the uncertainty at White Hart Lane, the man who was heavily linked with Manchester United for £20 million in the summer will surely be tempted by such a move, and he has the undoubted advantage of not having played in the Champions League this season. Berbatov has the physical stature, goalscoring record and skill necessary to earmark him as a potential target in the transfer window.
Lukas Podolski? The ‘young player of the tournament’ in World Cup 2006 has this season been forced out of the Bayern Munich first team by the arrival of Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose. At only 5 foot 11, ‘Prince Poldi’ may be deemed too small for a place on Chelsea’s shortlist but he in fact that same size at Etoo who has performed so magnificently as a lone striker for Barcelona. Like Etoo, Podolski is undoubtedly strong as well as quick and a clinical finisher. At only 22 years-old, the man who had the world at his feet only 18 months ago would surely relish a new challenge away from the Bayern subs bench.
We know little of Grant’s record in the transfer market, but a replacement to Drogba will be needed sooner rather than later, and that man will have some very big shoes to fill. Chelsea’s have looked a far inferior team without him so far in 2007, and it is not overstating the case that it will be this decision that colours Grant’s entire reign as Chelsea manager.
