Hull City vs Chelsea | 26-Sep-07 @ 19:45 UK

I have a strange feeling ahead of this match. I want Chelsea to get eliminated in both domestic cup competitions. Given the fragilities and morale of the team, to make a serious attempt for all competitions can be quite risky. I’m ready to give Avram some time but does he have it in him to marshal the blue army in the pursuit of all competitions, in this season particularly?

This is what Avram Grant has on his plate – good players, unmotivated with low morale, need for change of playing philosophy, tough competition than last season, african cup of nations, this thing called ‘exodus’ looming large. Now, do you still want us to be playing in all competitions or concentrating only in the premier league and champions league. I choose the latter.

Avram has a point when he says this is not the perfect time to take the team and that certain things take more time than you’d like.

I know it’s not an ideal time to take the team, there’s no time for preparations or to put my style on the team, especially after the (previous) three games when we didn’t win. But I believe in this team and the club and the players. I don’t know how long I’ve got but I will try to do my job. We need to improve the style of the team and believe we can with this group of players. This season we didn’t play very well apart from against Birmingham, when we were fantastic, and 20 minutes against Reading. We didn’t score enough goals so we need many things to improve in a short time because every few days we have a game. It’s a process and it won’t come in one day. I will try to take the best from all the players. Even in a short time I think you will see Chelsea better than at the beginning of the year.

If this means we have to put up with few more losses and draws and see ourselves in the mid-table for sometime, then it’s really not worth it. This season, Jose Mourinho was playing with a different playing style. If you happened to see the Chelsea vs Rosenborg match, we played superbly. Twice we hit the post and we missed sitters. I’m not buying this ‘improve Chelsea’s style of play’ for I thought we were already playing well. My expectation from Avram or whoever is going to replace him next week or whenever, is this – just better what Jose did.

Avram says that players are happy thereby ruling out one of the possible excuses later on. In the previous paragraph he was talking about this time not being the ideal to take the team and now he also says that the players are happy.

It’s better than I thought. When you have 25 players in the squad, one or two might not be happy, but I haven’t seen that. I’m a very positive person but I know that it can’t be 100 percent happiness. There is nobody, including me, that is happy about the situation. But it has happened, it’s football and it’s not the first time it’s happened in football. We need to adapt very quickly and look forward to improving the quality of the football.

While Avram still remains to be a mystery man with regards to his credentials and capabilities (and licenses!), we have to swallow all news and information that we get from various sources. Arsene Wenger has some good things to say about Avram here:

Nobody knew about me when I arrived in England but I know Avram Grant and he is a very intelligent man with a big knowledge of the game. He came to study our training methods when he was the Israeli coach and I liked the man. There is nothing to stop him being a success because he has the financial resources, he has the players and he has the knowledge. I understand people have become a bit passionate and emotional after Mourinho’s sudden departure. But that doesn’t mean you have to convict the guy who comes after him.

Very fair remarks. That’s my feeling to some extent. We should not convict him just because he gets to replace the darling of Chelsea fans. Football is the same for Avram but what would change for him is the pressure, expectations, superstars ego etc which he did not have to deal with in Israel.

Kenn Emetulu from Chelseablog says why he finds Avram Grant a complete embarrassment. While Avram has some friends in England, he also has some admirers back home. The former Israeli coach Shlomo Scharf calls him a manipulator!

He is a dangerous man, a manipulator, a coach who took the national team backwards in terms of football style and world ranking yet made the media think he did great. Now he has wormed his way in at Chelsea and the thought that Avram from (little Israeli club) Petach-Tikva is the next Jose Mourinho is unbelievable. He does not understand football and never will. He just has connections and his favoured journalists.

Taking the Israeli team backwards in terms of football ranking is a fact. But I have as much knowledge of Israeli team’s playing style as I have on thermodynamics. If Avram logs in to the Chelsea TV website, he’ll be in for a real shock. Chelsea Tv still shows Jose Mourinho as the manager of the club.

Do you see that Jose Mourinho picture on the first block of the sidebar in BlueChampions homepage. That would remain there as a mark of respect for the man. This picture symbolises himself and what he’s left for us.

Also there is a new football quiz feature in BlueChampions. If you click on the champions league trophy image on the sidebar in BlueChampions homepage, you’ll get a quizboard pop-up where you can answer the questions and upon winning the quiz, you’ll get prizes too. This particular quiz is on UEFA Champions League. The quiz has various levels so don’t write off the quiz as easy because it would get tougher as the level goes. All the best and if you win, let us all know :-)

Back to the match tonight. Our appeal against Obi Mikel red card that was never a foul, has been upheld and he will have to face a three-match ban, the first of which being tonight. I’d go for a 4-4-2 with Sheva and Kalou upfront, Maka, Essien, Malouda and Joe Cole in the midfield. In defence, it should be Terry, Alex, Belletti and Ashley Cole. I thought Wayne Bridge was supposed to return in the last week of this month. If Avram wants to win with Chelsea, tonight is the best opportunity. Tonight’s match won’t end in a draw because, there can only be 30 mins extra time and subsequently a penalty shoot out. So, by all probabilities, Avram should notch his first Chelsea win. If Chelsea fails to win tonight, though it would benefit us, the Press would write us off, ridicule and will make Avram’s and Roman’s life miserable.

I don’t care much about the result. But I care about how they play, how many chances they create, how many shots off/on target, how comfortable is the defence and if they have the spirit, hunger and determination they are known for. Let me end with a fantastic news in the current circumstances – Roman is reported to have offered the Chelsea job to the Dutch legend, one of the all-time greats, Marco van Basten. Three Cheers!!!

I think despite what you have said that every team should attempt to win every competition. You know I am an Arsenal supporter and we play a second-choice lineup in the Carling Cup, but that does not mean we don’t want to win. Maybe it is a time to rest some Chelsea players but whoever comes in should want to show what they are worth and use the game as experience for the first team.

    Just my opinion.

We were just 2 or 3 matches away from a quadruple last season. But it required tremendous (i’m looking for more adjectives) efforts from Jose to carry Chelsea along in all competitions as much as we did. To repeat that this season would be a hell of a task.

I’m not trying to say that we should play only to lose. No way, I’d say that. We always play to win. What I’m saying is if we lose in the cup competitions, it would be a blessing in disguise for us. With about only 15 to 16 players always available, you invariably will have to tire some players over and over again for these cup competitions. All I’m talking about is channelising our available resources (including manager’s time) towards the most important objectives. That way the efforts will be more efficient and dedicated.

I’m an Arsenal supporter as well and to some extent I can see where you’re coming from in your blog, however, I think it would do Grant good to win a game, the sooner the better for him and not least the club.

The longer your run of not winning games continues the media will mock you (not entirely unrightful in my opinion) and opposing supporters will have something to chuckle about.

I agree with you agentblue. Im not saying Grant isn`t any good he might be great but not big enough for Chelsea. Chelsea has become one of the top teams therefore needs a top bloke

Grant is only tempoary, Roman wont settle for a coach with no credentials. Having said that while Grant is the coach it would be nice to win a few games and get some morale and belief back (if we lost any). I agree the focus should be on Champions League and Premier League, but we should be able to beat Hull with some stylish football and a second string team!

    Hi guys,

I saw the Liverpool-Reading game yesterday..Liverpool’s stregth n depth is amazing..Seriously liverpool has the strongest squad in england now..If rafa can channel his resources well n avoid too much tinkering, they will win the EPL this season..

Arsenal is playing fantastic football at the moment, but they are also playing their best possible team..a couple of injuries to key players like Fabregas, adebayor, van persie, Hleb, Rosicky etc could hurt them a lot..they have brillaint youngsters in their ranks, but they might not be able to deliver the goods at this level week in week out

United are just about getting into the groove as well..they have won their last 5 or 6 games in all competitions now..they are embarking on a decent run..their defence is looking solid n unbreakable at the moment.teams will find it tough to beat them

    what about our present situation..

11 points from 7 games in the Epl..Arsenal, united n Liverpool are ahead of us..n Liverpool n arsenal have a game in hand..Arsenal has 16 points now n if they win the game in hand..19 points..thats 8 points ahead of us..a good lead already…

UCL..we are away to valencia next i guess..thats a pretty tough game coming at the wrong time for us..maybe we could still recover n progress from the group bcos we are a good team..

FA cup wont start till much later..so maybe our team will have settled by then under grant(playing BEATIFUL)..hopefully we could do well there

Carling Cup..we have a relatively easy match as compared to our other main rivals..we should win today n hope for a good draw for the next round as well..that will allow the team n grant some time to settle down n focus..then maybe grant can deliver the BEAUTIFUL football hes promised

I would like to see a 4-4-2 today

    —————Cudicini—————-

    Beletti—-Alex—–Terry——Ashley—

    Joe——-Sidwell——Essien——-Malouda

    ————-Sheva——–Kalou————–

    Subs:-Cech, Ferrira, Shaun, Pizzaro,Makalele

Beautiful or Ugly..please win..dont lose n embaress the club any further

N if Van Basten is really coming..great..atleast all of us know who he is:)..he was a fantastic player..hopefully he can a great manager for us…

bad for you,cfc has just refuted the claims that they have offered anyone cfc job

  11. avatar 11 | mcurto Reply to this comment

Seriously.Wont u rather see Capello at the helm? Its pedigree is second to none, but hes style might not be very attractive.

Would u scarify good results in competition just to see ur team playing “attractive” football? Ask Arsenal fans if they wouldn’t trade.

While Arsenen stays behind Abramovich venting to him what to do I’m afraid CFC will never get the stability they need.

  12. avatar 12 | mcurto Reply to this comment

My guess is Arnesen isnt too happy to see Grant in charge. This probably isn’t the outcome he was expecting.

Theres a power struggle inside CFC, thats for sure. Wouldn’t be too surprised if Van Basten being there were Arnesen doing to rock the boat and get Grant on his way.

  13. avatar 13 | mcurto Reply to this comment

    Just one more tought:

Funny how till date no denial has been made by Van Basten himself.

Hes in charge of Holland national team and he wouldn’t want any rumors to afect “his” teams.Thats is: if really he wouldnt want the job.

Probably hes now sorting things with is pal Arnesen…. :P

    Joeblue

No one was whining about the “past”. The so called replacement is not up to scratch and even if Van Basten would get the job it makes no difference i have watched holland play and there is nothing attractive about their football. Keep your jose hatred to yourself.

    Folks,

I think this is actually the best time to write a comment on this Blog as all of you have commented and showed your love in different ways to the greatest club eva, this makes me a more stronger “Blue” than eva before…. As they say in times of Storms like natured animals (dont take it literally just a figure of speech, a silly metaphor) seek refuge around each other for comfort and support…..

Being actually concerened over fixture with Hull is more Reading or Burmingham than Chelsea, has it come down to this ? I wonder!! A few months back before the start of the season concerns were like the 4 thropies or maybe 3 however seeing all this boil down to such a situation is sad yet true. How did we come down to this, is it AVRAM, ROMAN, KENYON, ARNESEN or JM (no disrespect Special one), I believe all of them are to blame in my opinon as in all great power struggles the club suffers and here is a perfect example of a great club suffering due to mindless power struggle of huge egos.Im my life I have understood the fact that not all can be leaders, in a corporation, a house or a club you need to have proper hierachy alongwith people having different levels of competencies, IQ’s & abilities….I would cautiously disagree to JM when he said all the “good eggs in basket” philosophy its always mix of good, above average, average, below average and bad (trust me sometimes bad is good)….You just cant have the richest, the oldest, smartest & the most dynamic in one place…its always a recipe for disaster…thats what has happened to our beloved club …disaster struck!!! now we have a heirachy of one of the best resources while the credentials for our manager are poor for the English game soo developing a heirarchy in the middle of a bad start of a season is again a huge egoist move by a great business man..so guys even if you give a chance to AV nothings gonna happen he cannot challenge or even mutter in front of successful ppl like ROM,KEY,ARS,BUC…so guys no chance…no chance at all…I would like to give him all the chances in the world however sorry nothings happening…Managers have vision not dictation, managers are leaders not followers…

Secondly the blog saddens me by thought that the writer asumes that loosing to Hull is a blessing….Sir, I am a fan from Pakistan…where its MAN UTD, ARS or LIV…being a CFC fan is continuosly defending or fighting a war alone (very hard to find a Blue fan)…so never make comments like you had made saying the Blues would loose to Hull even for greatest intrests…

Thirdly Van Basten coming to Chelsea is sadly being denied by the club I hope this is a one sided denial to create the competition guessing, I just hope ROM makes the decision of his life time not a decision for his life…he is intelligent enough to look into this decision quickly as its not happening for us even in the future…As per above arguments…

I hope all of us Blue fans keep on praying on the change we deserve and all the wins we deserve….

    BLUE RULZ

    BluRehman!

I’m not saying Blues would lose, what I’m saying is even if Blues lose, you have something to cheer. Man Utd lost to Southend at early stages last season and while we were slogging it out with league cup matches in Dec, Jan and Feb, they were concentrating on premier league and champions league. like that.
