Why Did Jose Mourinho Leave Chelsea?
Months before Jose Mourinho was sacked he said, “There are only two ways for me to leave Chelsea, one is to finish the contract in 2010 and another is for Chelsea to sack me”. It’s not 2010 yet, so you know what happened! What prompted Jose to leave Chelsea? Read this article by Duncan Castles from The Guardian on what went on in the last 2 years at the club that made it more and more impossible for Jose to continue. For your convenience, I’ve given below the full transcript of the article. Take a deep breath and get prepared for the assault!
Tuesday, 10pm, home dressing room, Stamford Bridge. Andriy Shevchenko is taking Michael Essien to task on his performance in the night’s embarrassing 1-1 draw with Rosenborg. The former European footballer of the year tells Africa’s finest midfielder that he tried to make too many passes through the centre of the Norwegians’ formation where ’70 percent of their players were’. Essien learns he should have been passing to the wings ‘where they only had 30 percent of their men’.
Not the most insightful of tactical advice, but then these are not the thoughts of a Ukraine international, they are those of a Russian billionaire. Standing beside Shevchenko, tactics board in hand, Roman Abramovich is the man telling Essien how to play football. Shevchenko is merely there to translate. In another room, attending to the press, Mourinho is utterly unaware of his employer’s actions.
Tuesday, 7:11pm, the home dressing room. Chelsea’s squad of 18 are called out for their pre-match warm up. All the players step out for the carefully prepared drill – except one. John Terry remains sitting where he is. One of Jose Mourinho’s assistants urges Terry out. Chelsea’s captain refuses, swears, and, according to an eye witness, says he is upset and has ‘things on my mind’. Terry is said to be furious after finding out that Mourinho had been asking in Chelsea’s treatment room whether there was a medical reason for his perceived loss of form over recent weeks. The stand-off continues until a team-mate cajoles his friend out on to the pitch.
The game starts, Chelsea quickly lose a goal at a free kick as Miika Koppinen stretches ahead of Terry to turn in a near-post cross. Chelsea go in at half time 1-0 down and Jose Mourinho takes his captain to task, blaming the defender for the deficit. Terry says nothing but all his team-mates can see the anger on his face.
The pair had once been the closest of footballing allies, but within 24 hours Mourinho is no longer Terry’s manager as Chelsea agree to a £10.5million pay-off to rid themselves of a man they describe as ‘the most successful manager the club has known’. ‘The relationship broke down not because of one detail or because of something that happened at a certain moment. It broke down over a period of time.’ – Jose Mourinho, 21 September 2007.
To understand how the winner of two Premier League titles, two League Cups and one FA Cup, a man who averaged an unprecedented 2.33 points from his 120 Premiership games in just over three seasons, steadily became persona non grata at the club he made great, it is necessary to return to the summer of 2005.
‘In Jose’s first season everything was fine,’ said a Chelsea employee who suffered the Abramovich guillotine long before the Portuguese. ‘He came in, he won the title by miles, almost made the Champions League final, everyone was happy. But then it all began to go wrong. Peter Kenyon started thinking it was his genius as a chief executive that was important. Abramovich’s mates were telling him his money had done it and any half-decent coach would win the league with those resources. They forgot that the most important man at any club is the manager.’
That summer, Chelsea poached Tottenham Hotspur’s sporting director Frank Arnesen at a cost of £5m. Ostensibly recruited to revolutionise the club’s sub-standard youth ranks, the Dane was actually brought in on the recommendation of Piet de Visser, a well-known Dutch talent scout who had advised Abramovich on football matters from his first months as Chelsea owner.
Arnesen and De Visser, friends and allies from their time together at Dutch club PSV Eindhoven, steadily worked to influence Abramovich’s thinking on the first team, and, most importantly, player recruitment. Along with the agents Soren Lerby, Vlado Lemeic and Pini Zahavi they sought to steer Abramovich towards the purchase of certain footballers. Their objective, according to one source, was ‘to get to Abramovich’s money. To do that they needed power at the club, needed a manager who would do what they wanted. Mourinho was not that manager.’
Thus emerged a power struggle in which Arnesen and others seemed to undermine Mourinho by questioning him at every opportunity. When Mourinho went to war with Uefa over the actions of referees they told Abramovich his coach was embarrassing the club. When Mourinho’s team dourly won key matches by a goal to nil, they told the owner a better coach would win by more goals and bring him far more flamboyant football. When a Mourinho signing failed to perform on the pitch, they told Abramovich that better players could be found elsewhere.
Within a year, and despite Mourinho’s success in claiming a second successive Premiership, the manager had lost control of transfers. In the 2006 summer window, Mourinho asked the board to buy Samuel Eto’o; they spent a UK record £30m on Shevchenko. Chelsea sold William Gallas to Arsenal against Mourinho’s wishes, and forced the £7m Khalid Boulahrouz upon him, while Arnesen compounded the error of allowing Chelsea’s most effective defender to leave the club by pulling the plug on the £5m purchase of Micah Richards. Inside a season Richards was a full England international, while Boulahrouz was stinking out the reserves until Chelsea paid Sevilla to take him off their hands.
At least Mourinho could easily leave the Dutch defender out of the first team. A personal friend of Abramovich’s, Shevchenko played regardless of his performances, and those were usually awful. In his first 26 appearances for Chelsea, the Ukrainian striker scored five goals. His coaches and team-mates often felt as though Chelsea were playing with 10 men and Mourinho was faced with a problem – should he leave out the owner’s pal or lose the faith of the rest of the team?
As January approached, Mourinho asked to be allowed to sign a new striker. The board refused. Mourinho asked for a centre-back to cover for Terry, then sidelined with a serious back problem. The board offered him a choice between Alex, a Brazilian bought via De Visser and ‘parked’ at PSV for two seasons, and Tal Ben Haim, a Zahavi client. Mourinho wanted neither.
Worse still, Chelsea’s manager was instructed to sack one of his assistants and add the Israeli Avram Grant to his coaching staff. When he refused, the club descended into open warfare.
Mourinho dropped Shevchenko from his first team, leaking the story to a national newspaper in an open challenge to Abramovich to sack him. On an emotional afternoon at Stamford Bridge the manager first rallied his team around him, then sent them out to overrun Wigan 4-0. Long before kick-off the Chelsea supporters were chanting ‘Stand up for the Special One’ through standing ovation after standing ovation.
An infuriated Abramovich ceased attending games and instructed his advisors to find a replacement coach. Mourinho let it be known that he would leave, but only on payment of the outstanding value of his contract – about £28m comprising £5.2m per annum for three-and-a-half years and up to £10m in bonuses. In the meantime he kept winning matches, pushing his injury-hit squad to within a few games of a remarkable quadruple.
Ultimately Chelsea won the League Cup and the FA Cup, forcing Abramovich to reconcile with his manager. A consciously ‘mellow’ Mourinho promised to avoid conflict with opposing managers and football authorities, accepted restrictions on his transfer budget, and reshaped his team in a more flamboyant 4-4-2 formation. Fatefully, he also acceded to the appointment of Grant as Chelsea’s director of football.
Though some in Mourinho’s camp had Grant pinned as a ‘Mossad Spy’ from the off, the manager attempted to work with him, holding long meetings with him during the club’s staggeringly positive pre-season US tour and letting it be known that he welcomed his arrival as a buffer against Arnesen and route to Abramovich. The early-season optimism, however, swiftly evaporated.
Grant began calling individual players aside to ask them questions. ‘You look sad, why?’ ‘How do you feel in this position?’ ‘Is this the best place for you to play?’ ‘Are we using your abilities well?’ Because many of them complained about this to Mourinho, the manager decided to cut back radically on team meetings, the only one this season having been arranged for the Jewish New Year when Grant had returned to Israel.
While Grant looked on at training, Shevchenko treated it with disdain. A morose, lonely figure around the camp, he seemed to show more interest in improving his golf swing than his shooting. As the first team prepared for their final pre-season friendly against Danish side Brondby, Shevchenko declared himself unfit with a back problem. A 2-0 victory ensured the £121,000-a-week striker was not missed, but Mourinho was bemused to discover that Shevchenko’s bad back had not prevented him from enjoying a round of golf at Sunningdale that day.
The board, though, were not interested and the club’s descent continued. Other players began to realise what was happening, that the summer’s peace was a false one, that their manager had no support from the top. ‘The mentality became weaker and weaker,’ said one insider. ‘You could feel the team’s strength sapping away.’
Mourinho knew his time at Chelsea was coming to an end. At Uefa’s forum for elite coaches in Geneva a fortnight ago he allowed Premier League rivals an insight into his thinking. ‘Mourinho said he loved Chelsea and he loved English football, but thought he would not stay for long,’ said one coach. ‘One of us asked him why. He wouldn’t answer, but it was obvious something was seriously wrong.’
His next Champions League match brought the end. On Wednesday afternoon the board asked Mourinho to resign, citing his handling of Shevchenko, his attitude to authority and, crucially, his relationship with Terry as reasons why he should go. Mourinho refused to walk, and fought only to maximise his pay-off as Chelsea apparently threatened to call club employees to testify against him at any employment tribunal.
A £10.5m pay-off was agreed and the following morning Mourinho made a final trip to the training centre at Cobham to pick up his possessions and say goodbye to his squad. There was a message in each farewell. For most there was a Latin embrace and warm words of thanks. For Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard the emotions were so strong that both men were reduced to tears, Lampard retreating to the shower room in an attempt to hide his. For Shevchenko and Terry there was nothing but a handshake that, in the words of one observer, could have ‘frozen a mug of tea’. No one was in any doubt about who he considered the true captains of his team.
Out with the old, in with the new. Furious at Mourinho’s dismissal, senior players describe Grant’s appointment as ‘a disgrace’. Some at Cobham call him ‘an idiot’ and describe his coaching techniques as ’25 years behind the times’. Abramovich pushes the Israeli around ‘without a hint of respect’.
Former academy coach Brendan Rogers has been drafted in to help out with the first team, a promotion that may not be unconnected to the one-on-one training sessions he gave Abramovich’s son. Only in Steve Clarke is there the level of football knowledge to deal with a squad full of international superstars. As the sole survivor of Mourinho’s cadre of four assistant managers, the Scotsman has an unenviable task.
But then neither he nor Grant will be picking the team. As Michael Essien discovered on Tuesday night, the new manager of Chelsea is also the owner.
Even if only one-fourth of the above is true, it is quite spine-chilling. It goes on like some kind of Alfred Hitchcock crime thriller where the innocent gets himself caught into a thickening criminal plot by cunning conspiracies around him.
Let’s make one thing clear. Jose was not sacked on performance grounds. He had the backing of the players. So, for what reasons did the relationship between him and the ‘club’ broke down? I leave it to you to decide on this article by Duncan Castles in The Guardian.
[tags]Chelsea, Jose Mourinho, Roman Abramovich, Avram Grant, Frank Arnesen, Champions League, Premier League, Michael Essien, Andriy Shevchenko, Peter Kenyon[/tags]
I read lots of reports saying Terry backstabbed Jose..but i dont believe that..JT doesnt seem like that sort of a person..
This story looks very plausible..However, I cannot believe that the relationship between Mourinho and Terry has gone bad..Just because JM questioned on JT’s form..that doesnt turn JM and JT rivals..he is the manager and JT of all the players shd know that if they dont perform, they will be questioned..all in all RA has screwed up bigtime..I have lost all my hopes on Chelsea this season..Chelsea will never be the same!!!!!
when i had that jose has lift chelsea ,i fill sorry for my self to become a blues . just a disappointment to blues fans in port harcount .
That last comment, sums up Chelsea football club, as a whole!
I know there are lifelong Chelsea fans, our there! My boss was one, but they are very few, & far between!
90% of you, are glory seeking parisites (Like Kenyon)… and I can’t wait for your “Football Club” to fall apart!
It’s starting… can you hear it…?
“STAMFORD BIRDGE IS FALLING DOWN…”
goon – bugger off. a few wins and you guys back to your arrogance.
start worrying about that mafia man, murderer, rapist criminal usmanov buying up 21% in arsenal. what will happen to you after he buys up 25% as he plans. think about it. very soon the emigrants stadium will fall apart.
i dont think jose was referring to JT when he said stabbed in the back. he was only referring to avram. read his interview again. but yes, there could have been some exchange of words between JM and JT but that’s all quite common in football. manager and captain not agreeing on certain things.
all said, JM was certainly cornered and made to leave. very unfortunate. AG will take us down as much as possible. forget about winning the champions league, will we play champions league next season?
Did Duncan Castles win a Booker prize for fiction. I think Tom Clancy is sh***ing himself. The only “source”is a long gone employee (love to know what his job was)the rest of the novel take’s known fact’s and weave’s a facinat’ing tale of web and intrigue . As a fan of CFC for over 40yr’s I can remember lamenting the fact that we did not get enough press coverage now I wish they would just go away (be careful what you wish for).On that note I would just hope that all those who support CFC would give AG a chance and who ever come’s after him (Van Basten?).I for one c’ant belive that RM will leave us without a “big” name manager for to long and then we will see who run’s team affair’s,but everyone should remember that he write’s the cheque’s so he is entitled to some input to the way the club should be going.
all this is crap and malicious…and moderator must have not posted all this rubbish here….and do u really think a successful businessman like Abramovich is so gullible that he can be taken for a ride by any Tom,Dick and Harry for his money….
manish @ 8 – this happens with all businessmen and rich men. everyone has a weakness. you and i dont know what roman’s weakness is. and you know what, roman is a human.
manish – you dont understand or you pretend to? BC just posted this left this to us to vote on poll, if this is believable or not. earlier he had also put polls to ask if jose should be sacked or not. why are you going overboard on this? just to let you know, as per the poll, about 95% do not agree with you.
and dont write this story off. i dont know if this entirely true but this is largely true. i can say that having followed the games and associated events closely.
The story sounds very believable especially keeping in mind the Khalid Boulahrouz’s presence in the squad…I believe it was a job of a true Idiot to get such a misfit of a player for a somewhat struggling defensive line up and a struggling Ferrira….didnt make sense for the Special one to go for such a stupid buy….As far as intrests in Mica Richards is concerned it did show great vision on the part of the purchaser as he has shown great progress in his development, form and competence so we can assume that the Special one would have the insight to have such ambitions…
Another reason for believing this story is the way our Sqaud was shaped 3 years back, I have two words for it SIMPLY SPECTACULAR, an unbeatable outfit….and more we move ahead in time the side back wealer and sporadic in nature with no long term ambitions…older and expensive stars of the past became a priority yet another reason to believe that the special one had nothing to do with it…
AS far as JT is concerned he is still my captain and I have respect for his authorities so no comments on his part of the story….
Hope the bottom line message for this story is SANITY PLEASE…lets not get carried away from our objective…
mourinho quit because he knew of his coming failures…all this was orchestrated by him…
manish. can u define failure? you’re talking about one of the most successful coaches in football history whose last silverware was only 4 months back. btw, who has more money, power and influence to twist stories – jose or roman?
mourinho is a quitter….
JM : was forced out , and this might be my last comment in a while. I’m in a certain asian country starting with M and it’s gonna get ugly here soon . Will probably be cut off for some time .
Mean time keep the debate open . See ya BC and all . Over and out !
manish – you’re a quitter and thats why you’re running away from the discussion, with a pointless one-liner!
what do you want to discuss….put forth your points and I will reply…
“think about it. very soon the emigrants stadium will fall apart.”
Obviously, some bird hasn’t been keeping up, with current events!
WE… ARE… NOW… THE… RICHEST… CLUB… IN… ENGLAND… AND… THE…. 2nd…. RICHEST… IN… THE… WORLD!
All built on past glories, history, class, respect, all equaling in being self-sufficient!
Something you muppets, haven’t got a clue about!
“Being the biggest club in the world by 2014…
Winning the C.L. TWICE, in 6 years…”
(Even though you are £40m in debt & can’t even fill a 40,000 seater stadium?)
As Peter Hill-Wood has said, quite rightly “BULLSHIT!!!”
ha ha…
“Jose was running away from his coming failures”
in other words, he was not a failure and had not failed yet. But he was running away from the possibility that he might fail someday in future…hmmm!!! the power of the human mind. we are really all uniquely created.
Fact to ponder…
The biggest football clubs in the world are also the most successful clubs in the world and attract the largest followings.
Success on the pitch is the biggest determining factor of a clubs size far above finances and playing style.
manish, you have no case and you are clearly on am isolated island. The overwhelming makority of us discerning blue fans know that this story is believable.
The refusal of Roman to get us reinforcement last january is a fact. The struggle because of the imposition of sheva is a fact. remember drogba last year granted an interview and spoke about the non committal attitude of sheva.
The long and short of it s that we are in serious trouble because we have a wealthy owner who is a petulant spoilt brat who will not put his personal idiosyncracy behind the collective interest of the club.
As the owner of the club, he is entitled to have an opinion no doubt, but we should be mindful that no high profile manager, the kind that Chelsea deserve will sit by and allow this web of intrigue, underming and interference to swarm him. What it means is that, unless something drastic is done to erase this notion, we can only attract lap dogs like Avramovich.
Roman may be the owner of Chelsea (and we thank him for the great things he has done) but it gives him no right to press the seld destruct button and cause the ruin of our club. Our club because many of us were blues before he came along. It also does not mean that we should look on sheepishly while he pursues this suicide mission.
I have said before and will say it again- It is crazy to get rich of a great manager like Mour five matches into a new season. it is however a crime to replace him with a nobody like Avramovich (and pls do not tell me to give him a chance- in a million years, he will do nothing. We have a saying that when the day is going be great, you can see it in the morning). If that is a crime, then there is no word to describe the fact that Roman has made him a permanent manager.
He has effectively ruined this season- bad enough! let him not ruin the club in addition. If he continues at this rate, then we the loyal blue fans might as well start scouting for another more sane billionaire and instigate massive fans action to get him out and get someone else- after all, Chelsea based in London will continually be a great attraction.
BC do u have an external e-mail i can send you some things on, i went to old trafford to watch the game and have video’s and pics to send u… if wanted of course!
was completly devastated by our performance and particulaly the way we played…the fact we may as well have stayed in bed!
Essien i was most upset with as he was our main man in midfield and everytime he received the ball sheva hid behind a defender cutting off a passing option which forced him to play backwards (happened over and over again) we had completly no attack and if sheva is going to mplay in such a lazy sluggish way then we’ll be lucky to win on wednesday let alone at valencia in nexty round of champs league!!!!
not a happy blue atm!!! altho still behind JOSE’S team! Grant will never have my support! and now neither will Roman!!
disgusted!
One hell of a story if it is all true. But, I am trying (very very hard) to be optimistic about the year. I believe Steve Clarke can find a way to get into the hearts and minds of the players to at least stay in the Prem. Oh, Chelsea will be out of the CL and very much out of the top ten. Perhaps then Roman will realize how foolish he has been and bring back THE MANAGER. If not, the mass exodus will happen. Not only players. But fans who see no future supporting an owner who cares more about his ego than maintaining a winning team. The Yankees have Stienbrenner. The Cowboys have Jones. Chelsea has Abromovich.
im considering going to ukraine embassy and asking for adriy schevchenko to be deported of being a completly lazy skill-less, unfit prick of a player that has as much commitment as a heroin addict going to an opendoors rehab!!!
he has (not single handed ##cough## BALLACK ##cough##) brought chelsea FC to its knees thru the firing of mourinho and the appointment of “Fatman Grant”
this past fortnight has been the worst i recall in the blues history! even vialli and Gullit were handled with more tact and decency and that was with ken bates incharge!!!!
things really dont seem to bright at this point in time!
#21 ‘manish, you have no case and you are clearly on am isolated island. The overwhelming makority of us discerning blue fans know that this story is believable.’
as if i give a damn to your ‘makority’…and yeah u said it rightly..urs is really a ‘makority’ or ‘mocko-rity’…LOL…
as far as i am concerned urs is rather a ‘mobokrity’ rather a discerning majority…
All of these could be true and I have to say i am disappointed in JT. Roman is a man that wants to be looked upon as “GOD” because he has the money to throw around and he has the sycophant employees to go with. As for shev-snitch-shenko, his career is ended and would definitely not be remembered as a top player.
Meanwhile lets concentrate on trying to hold a champions league spot for next season cos this season is sure over.
manishchandra – Are you a Chelsea fan? If you are, then youre quite a disgrace.
IF you’re not, then your just wasting your time with the things you are saying.
In any case, you’re quite unpopular. This blog will be a better one without you. Please leave.
Manish, deal with the facts and stop making a mountain out of typos as if you have never made any in your lifetime.
CLASSIC AVOIDANCE.
The Red Herring fallacy is committed when the arguer diverts the attention of the reader or listener by changing the subject to some totally different issue. Sticking to the topic of each individual folder will minimize the impact of this fallacy.
ANY BODY FAMILIAR WITH LOGICAL FALLACIES???
CLASSIC!!!!

BC, I think we should honestly discuss possibilities of having another club owner. What are the options? The situation where we are helpless because we fear that the departure of Roman will sink the club is not healthy. No club should allow itself to be the plaything of an individual. The destiny of hundreds of thousands of fans all over the world should not be left to the whims and caprices of one man.
guys, honestly, what are the options?
Howdy everyone here ,
after a long time i hav come back!!!!!
Thanx to that impersonator who writes his name as ‘Joeblue’ while mine is always without caps , without any proof Kafka decided to ban me ,since i dont even kno who u r , cuz u banned ME for what someone else did , without checking the IP address (or maybe u dont hav the tech to check) ,i mailed BC at least five times pleading to look into this outrage , but there was no reply , just cuz somebody writes the same name means u ban ME????
Anyhow i hav decided to use the login everytime now and please dont forget its joeblue WITHOUT caps!!!!
Jose is gone , i salute him, a man of honour , courage and a lot of simulation , a complete entertainer OFF the pitch and a shrewd manager , who got us titles we had never seen before!!!! my regards and good luck wishes r with him , as i hav always maintained i hav had nothing agnst the man!!!! Time for us to finally move on i think!!!
BC another thing pls be commited to Chelsea , i too dint like the manner of his dismissal and the timing as well and i sense something fishy , but hey he is not our manager anymore , he wld be sitting at home counting the millions he wld earn , its upto Grant and Clark now and thats where our support shld be , as they r part of the club now Jose isint , whats the use of excavating dead bodies???? we love the club , yes as u keep reminding us 90%+ fans loved Jose but he is no longer anything to Chelsea ,lets keep the good memories and move on!!!!
Guus i say , where r u man????? how abt some good old Total Dutch style Football at Chelsea , whatsay????
Cheers
And Kafka , i wont forget the humiliation u hav made me go thru for no fault of mine!!!!!!
HEY!!! now u r not allowing even my coments to go thru???
The Mail, last January when the feud between JM and RA erupted in the media wrote the following-
“Mourinho is the difference. He makes this ‘global domination’ malarkey that Peter Kenyon keeps squawking on about actually work. Yes, Roman Abramovich might have a mountain of money at his disposal, but he has as much chance of spotting Polonium 210 in his sushi as he has of identifying a way to improve the chemistry of a football team.
Without the right coach, he is just a super-rich exile throwing chips on the roulette table and hoping his number comes up. With Mourinho he is the ‘shrewd billionaire’ armed with a system to beat the banker.
cash is not the answer to Chelsea’s problems right now and they will fail if they continue to chase down the same ‘Galactico’ route already trampled by those great white elephants of European football, Real Madrid.
Following that path, managers like Hiddink will come and go in quick rotation, and players, too. The core of the team will be eroded and lost, and although a lot of shirts will be sold, there won’t be quite so many trophies in the cabinet.”
Hmmmmmmmmm…… how revealing.
This is my solution…
Boycott Chelsea’s next few games. Show RA that the fans are in control, and that CFC is not a toy for him to play with. Show him that if he does wrong by the club’s fans, the fans will respond and will hold him to account. Show every w***er on the CFC board that they’ve compromised the future of the club, its players, and its fans all so that the c*** of an owner can have more control over matters. Are you kidding me? he was lecturing michael essien on how to pass the ball against rosenberg. This cheeky russian c*** is going to teach michael essien how to pass the ball?
True Chelsea fans should hit the club where it really hurts. By boycotting the club’s next couple of games, we would embarrass the board and take away valuable ticket sales. Who knows? IF we do it long enough, maybe they will realize that they don’t have a carte blanche to do whatever they want. Remember, RA might be able to get rid of Mourinho, and he might be able to get rid of dissenting players, but he can never get rid of the fans.
As a lifelong Chelsea fan, I’m embarrassed. I’m disgusted and I’m well and truly fed up. I cannot see how this decision benefited the club at all. All I do see is that the power-hungry owner and his money-grubbing board wanted more control. He wants to run the team, and they want more access to his money. Mourinho was the only honest man out of the group.
As much as it hurts me to ask this – would it really be so bad for CFC to finish outside the top-6 for just one season? If only to show the w***ers in the board how idiotic, greedy, and self-serving their decision was.
Boycott our next few games. Don’t buy any more merchandise. Cancel your subscription to CTV. And flood the club’s mailbox with letters of protest:

Show RA and his posse that Chelsea’s fans have something to say, and that we won’t let our team be manipulated by anyone for any reason.
With all my respect to JM, he was building on basics set up by the previous manager CR (claudio ranieri). Now when (a) he had to deal with his own developments, while other managers learned his style, there was no way for a long term success. His motivation and tactics were good, but you cannot constantly run on high without major adjustments as time goes by. Plus, don’t forget that once every three or four years all big clubs have to re-invent themselves. AG may not be an immediate answer, but JM had to go. We need to accept it at CFC and look forward. Seeing all the negative comments I could not help but think that the culture of “instant success” does not help. Everything will be OK, let things take their course… :-)
#35…well said…
thanks manish, I also noticed you have had many sensible comments, often against the overwhelming current of “everything is bad, JM left, let’s die” attitude… CFC will survive through this crisis and emerge even stronger.
hi guys,
To anyone here who thinks JOSE quit….JOSE DIDNT..because if he did, he wouldnt have been paid the ’10 million pounds plus’ compensation package.
Compensation was given only because he was fired.COMMON SENSE.
Also, JM was a winner and would never walk away or quit.He commited his future to the club, its the club or rather Mr Roman Abramaovich who kicked him out.THATS A FACT.
As for continued success and world domination, if jose had been supported last season in january when he wanted a new striker and a new CB, he would have definitely defended the EPL or even won the UCL.He was more than capable of delivering the goods if given the resources.
As for Mr Avram Grant, his first match in charge betrayed his GREAT understanding of football. He talked about an attacking team and put out a defensive 4-3-3.His substitutions were horrible tactical blunders. As for his motivational skills, nothing much to say.It was visible on the pitch. If he expects to be the boss and take the club forward, he has to do much better than this.
until a week back, manish and the like were saying jose is here, let’s die. if you dont look for instant success, we should not have let jose go. there was a conspiracy and roman will be exposed soon.
kki,
you should feel slighted as a fan that a top manager left and was not appropriately replaced. you should feel insulted as a fan that this is a situation that has been managed to put in a stooge whose sole credentials are attendance at training sessions of other manager, his nationality and his relationship to Roman.
lets not lose track here or misconstrue the feelings of other fans on this blog. Yes, we are all sad that JM is gone but we are even more livid at the mode, the schemings , bareface lying, coverups, rabid sycophancy and above all the fact that he was not appropriately replaced. THAT IS THE ISSUE!!!! Dont trivailise/reduce this to a JM lovers/haters thing. If you have ANY confidence in Avram, that is good, I dont and there are not a lot who do.
i think its not roman’s decision…
he may forced to do so….
ROMAN open your eyes and look around you.
You can find the fault.
pull out those ****ards out of the club and make decisions which have to be decisions and not sacrifiCE
bigbadblue (40) — If you have seen my comments (#35), I did not make a support cause for AG. Confidence is a matter that depends on both credentials of the individual and your personal experience with him. There are no credentials for sure, and the first experience was not the best. And I agree that the transition should have taken place with better planning. Yet, I still believe that it is the not the end of everything and let’s not associate JM’s departure with the events of world collapse. Cheers, everyone will be better at the end.
joeblue @ 32 – we see your comment so what’s wrong?
bull****
Plus, don’t forget that once every three or four years ALL big clubs have to re-invent themselves.
bull**** 2ce over.
Arsenal is a BIG club…Man Utd is a Bigger Club, apply your statement again.
once again, logical fallacy.
The Hasty Generalization fallacy occurs when there is a likelihood that the sample is not representative of the group.
Argument By Generalization
drawing a broad conclusion from a small number of perhaps unrepresentative cases. (The cases may be unrepresentative because of Selective Observation.) For example, “They say 1 out of every 5 people is Chinese. How is this possible? I know hundreds of people, and none of them is Chinese.” So, by generalization, there aren’t any Chinese anywhere. This is connected to the Fallacy Of The General Rule.
I believe every word in the article above.
Only a petulant, spoilt billionaire who stole (didn’t earn) his money could have done this.
Abramovich had it so good after 2 years of winning the premiership, but that wasn’t enough.
He wanted to do it his way.
So now he gets it his way. With an idiot for an owner, and a mass exodus of the heart of the team.
Bye bye Carvalho, Drogba, and Lampard. Sadly, If I were them I were them I would leave too.
Sadly, team will never be the same.
Next year’s starting formation (after the exodus):
Cech
S**t Ben Haim Terry S**t
Makelele
S**t S**t
Ronaldinho
Shevchenko (S**t) S**t
“Fact to ponder…
The biggest football clubs in the world are also the most successful clubs in the world and attract the largest followings.
Success on the pitch is the biggest determining factor of a clubs size far above finances and playing style.”
Yeah, and historically, Arsenal are the 3rd most successful team, in English football history! Hence the fan base! Hence the FILLED stadium, every week! Hence the finances!
But even with all the success you lot have had, over the past 3 years, you still can fill your stadium & you’re still in debt!
Ok, you may have won over a few million yanks & chincs, worldwide, by buying the league… but what’s a few shirts sales going to do, when you fluff up, winning the league & they’ve all gone back to supporting man yoo, the following season?
I find hard to comprehend that winning 2 domestic cups, is not enough for some Chelsea “fans”!
There’s fans out there, outside the top 4, who would kill, to see their team score a cup! But for Roman & Co., that’s not enough!
You’re club is a laughing stock… and so is your fan base!
But nem mind… you’ll probably lose 2 million of them, this year, when you win fuck all… at least you’ll have 11 lifelong fans & Stamford bridge, next season! ha ha!
bigbadblue
At least someone sees it from my perspective. In the long run, sacking JM mite bethe best option BUT replacing him with a football none entity like AG is what makes me so angry.
i am a big fan of jose but still ill ask a question..
if a situation comes(which came unfortunately) where a owner has to stay or a manager will stay…as together they cant stay.. which would u prefer(if given a chance) for good future of chelsea?
with a level head ill say the owner.. but with a proper replacement with a good manager.. lets see what grant does ..
please KTBFFH!!
Howard Wilkinson, chairman of the League Managers’ Association, said he was disappointed Chelsea had not checked to see whether Grant had the pro licence. “I don’t want to get involved in personalities. This is not about Avram Grant, this is a matter of principle,” he said. “We do not have any issue about the rules being tweaked, we are not against that if the move in general is to have better-qualified coaches working in this country. “But one thing that disappoints us greatly is when clubs don’t check beforehand. “If BA employ a pilot they are not going to say afterwards, ‘By the way, do you have a pilot’s licence?’ It’s not a bad idea to make sure he has got a licence before you give him the job. “It would help if these big corporations spent a bit of time and energy determining these sorts of factors first.”
Avram got the job for 1 reason only. Not his qualifications.
He got the job to be RA’s lap dog.
RA is now in effect in charge of all tactical decisions.
He thinks he and his mafia cronies can do it better than JM.
Good luck!!!
KKI is wrong, Chelsea will never be as good, not with the owner calling the shots.
KKI,
it is not simply an issue of JM’s departure. It is the frighteming prospect of becoming a toy in the hands of a whimsical owner. Jose may just be the first. Can you imagine what next? The man must learn to respect the sensibilities of us the fans. if he respected us he would not have the effrontery of telling us that avram’s appointement is permanent. He would have by now announced a timeline to replace JM with a top notch coach. that is the crux of the matter.
MourofEssine (51): I am on your side with what you said. While I believe that it is good that JM is gone, I fully agree that the way it was done is pretty unprofessional, if not scary. It looks like the majority of fans express their negative opinion about the fact that JM was dismissed, not on how it took place. That is why I am saying that I think that JM used up himself and needed to be changed. But I have not excuse for the fact that the transition (if you can use this word at all) was done in a wrong way. I hope that people at the help learn from their mistakes and next change (it will happen eventually and not necessary for bad) will be introduced more professionally.
Re AR — I still have faith in him and don’t believe that he could be as easily subtracted as the article claims. We should understand one thing — CFC has more people interested in our fall than supporters and every article on this topic shall be taken with a pinch of salt. Otherwise they are getting exactly what they hope for — dissatisfaction on the brink on rebellion and inner conflicts among fans. We should avoid it at all costs and show a united (sorry, I have to use this word… :-) ) front against all sort of nonsense thrown into our direction, especially from more than simply biased writers.
KKI, it is exactly this kind of conformity that lead to a Nazi Germany. lets call a spade a spade, now and always. I also want desperately to believe the Mr. Grant will be a success at Chelsea , a first class coaching gem that has waited for 52 years to be discovered but I am afraid I cant find it in me. It just does not exist.
Why was he sacked by Israel if he was so good. The genius could not flourish there? Does this guy even look serious? Even active footballers undergo the courses to obtain the uefa pro license while they are playing. see how many players are taking over managerial appointments each year. Good old Avram on the other hand probably had no plans of working anywhere else outside Israel or at all which would explain his lack of a license…..or maybe he was waiting until his good friend Roman buys a club so they can start a new israeli/jewish confraternity out there.
All the coaches, Wenger/Sven who have said ‘ he is a good coach and yada yada yada should tell me why the heck no one has ever employed him then. European clubs are on the look out for the best materails in all areas but they missed Avram. or perhaps, there are afraid of having Hizbollah rockets aimed at thier stadia as aresult of Avrams presence. Oooh I want so much to believe!!!
I want him to succeed but its clearly looks a mountain too high . The man is out of his league and the fans of this once great club deserve better .
lastly, I dont care what Roman has done in the past, he fecked up and should leave same as I would say if any other person (jose for example) fecks up. I will not have one rule for A and another for B. If Jose’s feckup was not playing attractive football, Roman’s feck up was the Avram saga. What is good for the goose is okay for the gander.
And believe it or not, the club will not die. …Leeds is proof of that.
I am a fan and I have been disrespected. I demand revenge
chelsea has always been close to my heart
in india have woken up whole night to see my club play whereas never ever have woken up late
someone please help chelsea be the chelsea they were putting their 100 % and never say die attitude and if they even lose after such a performance still love em for the effort
whers the chelsea that learned from their mistakes
someone help chelsea
stop stamford bridge from falling down
we just ask chelsea for efoort without regret or holding down
tears tears tears tears tears tears tears!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
joeblue @ 32
I’m still committed to Chelsea and that’s why the blog is still on. I’ve not started another blog supporting Jose Mourinho or waiting for him to join a club. But I’d surely follow him and support him wherever he goes, just the same way I wold follow Drogba or Lampard, if they were to leave.
When personalities like Mourinho, Ferguson, Wenger, Henry, Beckham leave their clubs, it’s not that easy to stop talking about them. They’ve left such a mark and created history with you. To repeat, if I were not committed to Chelsea, I’d have shut down this blog and recover my social life and sleep!
P.S: My mailbox is handled by Kafka. More responsibilities and same salary :-)
why do you say OFF the pitch joeblue? i think his team played exhilarating football in the first two seasons and only in the third he adjusted his game a bit due to injuries and that;s how he got us to No.2 in league and two trophies. genius.
well i believe what i have read above and i am so disappionted with how rotten things are inside of chelsea…i love the club but its obvious that those at the elm of affair are not in love of the club….When wenger was approached by barcelona to work for them..he said he would never leave arsenal because of the authority and freedom he enjoys there..even the directors have pledged a space for him in the board when he decides to retire from been manager..this is a support been given to a top class coach that went trophyless for two seasons???
if Mourinho had enjoyed the type of control and freedom that most top class coaches do,then he would have trully achieved more than what he delivered for us…he operated under intense scrutiny and bad blood but still delivered the goodies…it shows that he was trully a special human being..
i am mostly disappionted in JT,for what he allowed happen btw him and Jose, but thats why we’re all humans,no one is perfect….
i am really ashamed to be a blue fan right now because of the type of dirt that my club has to deal with and i hope the sooner RA realises he’s is doing more damage to the club the better…he really needs to step back from situation so he can see a clearer view and know who wants the best for him and the club and those who doesn’t..
Mouriniho is one of the best managers in the history football never mind post-WW2 managers.
Chelsea will not win any silverware while Avram Grant is the manager.
I don’t have a problem with an owner getting envolved with football matters, as long as they know football.
Frank Arnesen and Piet de Visser should have been sacked they’re undermining Mouriniho as a manager. If Mouriniho was a bad manager then I would understand them treating with the lack of respect that he would of deserved.
I can’t see Alex Ferguson accepting this type of treatment or any other manager.
I am happy Mouriniho and I think abit alike because I’ve also been impressed by Samuel Et’o the way he has been playing the past few seasons.
I would’ve never wanted Chelsea to buy Schevcheko.
I don’t want to see Ronaldiniho at Stamford Bridge because firstly we would be wasting our money and we wouldn’t need him, its not like he is going to gurantee blues wins.
With that £30m I would have rather bough one of the following;
1Samuel Et’o
2Adriano
3Lionel Messi
It is important as a manager to get the players that you want or the next best thing in order to win silverware and building your squad for several years is important in winning silverware in the future.
The Chelsea board has made quite a few mistakes recently and won’t get the confidence of the general blues public who knows about the simple tactics in winning in major competitions.
Running a football club shouldn’t and isn”t difficult.
two simple mistakes:
1)Buying or substituting quality players for rubbish players
Selling Arjen Robben. We all know how Man Utd begged and pleaded C. Ronaldo to stay at Old Trafford by even going to the extent by visiting his folks to pursuade him to stay.
2)Undermining the worlds best manager.
blues fans you forget that majority of us believe that Chelsea played some pretty football in their first two seasons only in their third when struggling with injury that Chelsea just looked ugly to watch.
Asking Jose Mouriniho to leave Stamford Bridge was a huge mistake as I think their aren’t any better managers than him currently in this generation.
I think Mouriniho is better than Alex Ferguson who had no competition in the 90s, better than Capello and by way far better than Wenger or Rafa.
i do agree that mourinho is far better than wenger and rafa and is also better than ferguson….thats why i want him to to take over from ferguson if he ever retires….maybe i would join man utd then…hahahahahaha…

The talk of mass exodus is real unless the club does something real quick to re-inspire the players.
In fact big clubs know how unsettled we are at the moment and will swoop on our boys come next summer. and pls so not tell me we have money to replenish. it takes a lot to rebuild a team. Milan AC is not great for nothing. The spine has been there forever- this is how a great team is built.
After reading the Gaurdian article and watching the discussion on “Fox Football Phone-In” here in the states, I am finding it hard to continue to support Mr. Abromovich’s team. Mourinho’s departure was clearly the work of an arrogant owner, manipulative middle men, a Ukrainian spy, and an ego-tripping captian who isn’t as good as he used to be. This was the worst ouster of one of the finest managers/coaches that I have seen in any sport.
I could quit this “beautiful game” and go back to my own National Football League. But, watching a one hour game that last for 3-3/4 hours is stupid. I could quit Chelsea. But, I have too many fond memories. Knocking Arsenal out of the CL at Highbury, Robben thrashing Portsmouth, THATS WHY WE’RE CHAMPIONS at Anfield, the 10 man comeback against West Ham among others. Like Job in the Bible, I must take the bad with the good. Can it get any worse for Chelsea than this?
The stupid russian bought chelsea and run it like a nanny foundation ,His stupid friend shevy disrupted the team and now his toy-boys ,kenyon the orangman and BUCKet and saying trash
The stupid russian bought chelsea and run it like a nanny foundation ,His stupid friend shevy disrupted the team and now his toy-boys ,kenyon the orangman and BUCKet and saying trash
hello everyone!!!!
I agree with those ppl who sense something fishy and behind the scenes talk ,but hey now all of it has moved on ,do u ppl think boycotting our own team wld lead to???? this is not Manu or Arsey or L’pool that there r billions of fans at their doors ,this is Chelsea one of the most hated clubs in Europe , and our fan base is very limited ,imagine how it wld affect our market base , our coaches , manager(s) , other fans ,that wld be the dream of every Chelsea hater , all these times come ppl , managers come and go , even before Abramovich bought Chelsea , coaches dint stay for 5 yrs or decades , every coach is not SAF or Wenger!!!!
Yes now that banter wld start abt Jose being the best and all , but i dont want to fall into that kind of a debate , the fact of the matter is that Jose is GONE , and u guys shld be behind Chelsea no matter what ,no matter who , we love the club above ANYBODY else and thats that!!!!!
jose has gone, theres nothing we can do about it. My big gripe was the way it happened, its as if RM had no respect for us the fans and even less for the players they were left in the lurch before a big game. Left as far as i`m concerned with a nobody in charge
joeblue when jose was in charge you and your mates were crying all day all night and at the same time supported chelsea (i guess). similarly, now that jose is gone, we will cry all day all night and at the same time support chelsea.
i’m amazed at your new found wisdom and level headedness. may be you should look back some of your earlier comments on how much overboard you were earlier!
here comes the mellow joeblue! lOl!
chelsea is not dependent on JM for success. Give everybody a chance. chelsea have so much depth and determination that it will bounce back in 2 games.
all in all, show must go on.
amit at 72
That determination and depth you are claiming now came from someone.
Johnarejr
Terry has been exposed-Carvalho was the one that made him look that good.
guys, I agree we have too move on but the goings on indicates that no coach with self worth would be attracted to the club cos he wont want to be told what to do by some “scouts” and the owner.

I luv chelsea football club and i want jose maurinho back shannen cinnamond newry 12 years old
jose mourinho said he will come back once in his life to chelsea.. but i don’t believe so… thanks to mourinho because he IS bigger than chelsea and me made chelsea histories… he did big mistakes at porto (when he left after winning a champions league) and he’s wrong to leave chelsea bcs the new chelsea players, pizzaro and malouda, have never been managed by mourinho :(((((((.. i wish tren cate gives chelsea the champions league OR the premierleague.. wish you all the best Ten Cate………………..
JM is one of the best manager I’ve seen in years.
The last was Brian Clough. With their straight forward personality, no one can stand in their way. The most important thing in a football team is for all players to respect their manager. Since JM took over Chelsea, they had gain more fans than any other clubs. Chelsea will definately struggle this season. AG is a wrong choice as manager in top club in Europe. Bon voyage JM.
Abramovich is the Dauphin of Grotesque and Kenyon is The Saboteur who purposedly destroyed Chelsea of winning Milan in the Champions League Final.
For people like Roman Abramovich,Peter Kenyon and Bruce Buck to attempt to call Chelsea employees to draw false allegations is unconceivable!
Peter Kenyon is a Traitor to Queen and Country and Club!
For writers out there, I would consider interesting a book about Abramovich purposeful destruction of Chelsea with a picture of Abramovich on the book cover along with the title Dauphin of Grotesque – to hit all bookstores.
ROMAN PLEASE LEAVE CHELSEA SO WE CHELSEA FANS MAY HAVE A NEW PRESIDENT FOR HIS GOOD SENSE AND NOT FOR HIS BILLIONS!
I’ve supported Chelsea ever since 90′s and I have to say that I have decided to boycot, the feeling of disgust cannot be erased following JM’s departure as any true fan of football, regardless of their favourite team will agree, that he was a victim of Abramovich’s puppet show. Result wise, Chelsea’s winning average was the best in it’s footballing history, proof that JM’s rule and abilities were not just a fluke at Porto.
I feel sorry for the players who cared about their relationship with JM and vice versa. Those who did not will never understand the true team spirit of football. This is why MU are so consistent, as much I dislike them, I hold high respect to a club with a ‘why fix something that is not broken’ attitude.
l’ve decided to completely forget about Schevchenko, a player to allows himself to be molested my money, greed and power. He was so good at Dynamo Kiev and promised much, now he belongs in the corrupt Serie A, where he seemed to fit in very well.
I’ll be waiting and hoping for Mr Abramovich to leave.
i would want jose to manage charlton my favourite team
One season gone without allowing the Special One to perfect it,Chelsea Went without A trophy in their Chart. We ll all see what will happen in the next Season,When Peter keyon believed he can handle the team,Why cant he use the Abramovish money he believes can get him what he wanted,he contributed to the Elimination of the Special One.Next season soon begins,if care not taken, chelsea will go without a trophy in their chart,as Abramovish which believes his money can get him what he want, why he is almost died on where he sat on Champions League Final? In Chelsea nowadays,Theres no right for the Manager to buy the players he wanted but the Owner to chose.I love Special One,I ll still love chelsea,If one thing returns (special one).As for the Terry, you re not showing respect to your Manager and other team mate,He alwys proved to stubborn as he did to lose our Uefa Champions Penalty to Man utd, foolish terry.
Very interesting site, nice design, greetings
I bookmarked your blog, thanks for sharing this very interesting article
can jose return to chelsea again? pls i beg him……… he’s a very great coach he did everything as he wants chelsea fc to be the best and the best team! I REALLY WISH JOSE COULD RETURN TO CHELSEA FC !.without him , chelsea did not win and the other clubs are getting stronger like liverpool and manchester united. chelsea lost to liverpool 0-1 it was dissappointing! chelsea attacking, defending and passing is not good!. can the current coach do it better? PLS ……………….. [no offence]
Ciekawy post, dodalem twoj blog do ulubionych, bede tu teraz wpadal czesciej, pozdrawiam
The owner should let the proffesionals handle the job. He shouldn’t tell people how to play or who to buy. That’s why Chelsea won’t win nothing. They don’t let coach’s work they fire them every 3 months.
what chelsea got after jose left??? man utd. won three continue seasons in epl not chelsea…. jose was the perfect manger for chelsea and no one can take his place.
he should join manchester united after alex ferguson’s retirement…
he will get “unmeasureable” respect from players as well as from fans!!!!!!!
