Chelsea 1 - 0 Portsmouth | Right On Top, For Now!

One of those typical 1-0 Chelsea wins. We weren’t playing our best football. But we know how to get three points with as much as we can do. Pompey played well but I won’t say that they deserved a point or something.

Unfortunately, I could not follow the match as much as I would have like to. I was watching it live in a pub but there were too many disturbances, some constant and some intermittent, which impacted my enjoying the match and the post-match analysis I thought of writing. So, I’d write as briefly as possible.

I thought Chelsea were not at their best and it was Pompey all over the first half. We were a bit all over the place in the first 30 minutes or so. It was even a worrying sight at some point of time. Something has happened to Lampard since I wrote this post. He has now scored fours goals in four matches (England included).

lampard_ports.JPG

As always, our second half was much improved. We had a lot of chances in the second half to finish the game off but some kind of lethargy in front of the goal meant we were still on a thin lead. Harry Redknapp took some real risk in making attacking substitutions to put pressure on Chelsea. In the last quarter hour, we slowed down a bit and were content to close down the match for a 1-0 win. Can’t blame them especially when the end result has us leading the table.

Jose says that he expected a not-so-spectacular performance from the Chelsea team due to the fatigue of the mid-week international fixtures:

I don’t like to play after national team weeks. The players go there, play, some come happy, some unhappy, some train hard, some didn’t train, some travel on Thursday just to train yesterday. I cannot train with the team, I cannot prepare the team. The concentration is not the same and the way we are prepared is not the same. It happens like this four out of five international weeks. This is the kind of week where I say the team and play the game. I normally organise my teams from the first day of the week so if next week we play a bad game and we don’t get a good result I will be very frustrated because next week I will work all week for 90 minutes. This week I didn’t work, I was just waiting for them to arrive. This week I am not frustrated because I was waiting for something like this.

I think also the weather was not a help, very, very hot, surprisingly hot and I could see the first half was very difficult for the players to play intense. No pressure on the ball, people thinking slowly on the pitch, I had to shake them at half-time to improve them in the second half but at the end of the day I can say I’m happy with the points, I’m happy with the fact we are top of the league, but I want to play better.

Here are the match reports from various sites:

Sky Sports report
BBC Sports report
Official Chelsea website report

And have a look at this nice article on Chelseablog about ’spoilt fans’.

I should say there’s nothing much to complain about at the moment. We’re doing well, getting the goals, Lampard can’t stop scoring, Terry is back, Essien will be in midfield, Pizarro and Malouda clicking well, SWP seems to be rejuvenated and Drogba remains the Drogba we know. If you still have complaints, just have a look at the league table and see how we compare with the table leaders. Oh wait, you can’t, it’s Chelsea who’s on top!

It is just a matter of more matches and chelsea will be firing on all cinliders. We are scraping up points now and many clubs are playing well but still losing or dropping points. Thats why we are chelsea. Even not playing well, the points keep coming in. Things will soon change back to normal and the confidence will bring the rythm will need within the team. I believe so much in Morinho tatics. He knows what is best for this team , so He can either go on 433 or 442 and we get our results. Common Blues

Chelsea right on the top of the premership Finally!!!
However, I am sad to say that it was a real slothful performance by chelsea. In the end , when portsmith was attacking aggressively, I was begining to wonder that 1 goal was not enough.

I hope that this not so stellar performance was because of the fatigue left over from midway international duties, rather than chelsea unable to breakdown pompey’s defence.

Consequently, it was good to see belleti in action. Even though, he remained suspect at the RB postion. I hope he can settle quickly in the premiership.

If this is not our best , Everyone should be afraid of our getting better.

Great goal by Lamps , muscleman Drogs was amazing.

It’s a long season… and don’t you guys like being pragmatic once in a while ?

Whatcha want ? quick fluid passing moves, perfect triangles in midfiield til kingdom come and a DRAW at the end of the day ?

Gimme three points !
And gimme a beer !

It ain’t pretty , but it did the trick !
3 points and confidence !

So, when are we going to have a good match for a change??
And when are we going to lose? It may be a long time before either. Lampard’s such a winner, after so much criticism, he’s bounced back, and with a vengeance. He’s the reason we’re FIRST IN THE LEAGUE!!!
In other news, Derby County and Manchester United are the only teams yet to win in England. Out of three tries, they’ve both managed to be 19th and 20th. Not too shabby :D

We didn’t play our best football on the day, but we still managed to win.
I think the players were just a little bit fatigued both mentally and physically.

Throughout every season you will get matches like this, so this is nothing new. A satisfactory game, but we managed to manitain our good home record.

I know why Chris Eagles and Diarra (blues player) is in their respective squads.

The managers play them to give the elusion that these guys know how to play Once you’ve seen them a couple of times they become Cheslsea and Man Utd players respectively.

And then they sell these no talent wonder kids at a profit!

Hi Guys, its been awhile. glad to be back to the happy Blue Blog. Hey Midfiled_Decider, good to know you are well and still KTBFFH and waving the Anti Mour Red flag.

Manure just got an extremely lucky three points. But has anyone heard their fans complaining? No! Why, because that is the name of the game. You cannot always be spectacular every day but when you get the three points its beautiful.

Guys, remember that even in 05 and 06 when we strolled to the title, we did not steam roll every opponent. I think sometimes we demand too much of the boys and disrespect the opponents too. Pompey yesterday were playing fantastic football. The sheer energy my countryman, Muntari and my next door Utaka were exuding in that midfield was no joke. Our boys did well under very tough situations.

I have no complain. We will definitely settle more and more as Riccy comes back to partner Terry and Essien assumes a more permanent role.

Blue is Bliss guys. and Manure knows it.

yeh only CHELSKI players go on international. thts y thy stutter.

COMMON stop chattin S, stop makin ridiculous excuses if u didnt play well u didnt play well. u won, bottom point. thts the chelasea way, win & bore. 4 u recent chelsea fans( which seems 2 b every1 on this site) u wont no ne differnt, but believe me uve been borin football fans around the world 4 a long tym, we r nearly use 2 it.

PS DIARRA is a good player. has(d) great potential b4 joining chelski,as did robben n alot of players. wht does tht tell u.

but once again seen as all of u hav only statred supportin chelski in da last 3-4 years u wouldnt hav knwn bout diarra, who was i beleive at lyon/marsielle. he’s just been played in the wrong postion, n his lac of concentration is probsbly due to been bored on the pitch wit the style of football.

and as 4 eagles hes been touted a a great talent 4 years, and hes only 20.he need time, coming frm the clubs academy. something chelski wouldnt hav a great idea about.

and y did he play, WELL seen as we are missin 5 1st teamers, hes wht weve gt 4 cover. but u wouldnt no bout tht, cos we havent made a big deal out of it, using it as an excuse, lyk chelski (boredom epitomised) have. we just get on with it.

can n i ans me this who on this site has been a chelsea fan B4 the NEW millenium, or(as impossible as this may seem) since the premiership strted or beyond tht

Well, well, well, FootballGuy is back out of the cave where he went hiding until a fluke victory against Spurs gave his team three points yesterday. wonders will never end. FootballGuy, we are on top of you and will remain there till the end of the season. Football is a competitive game with victory as the major objective. Else we will pull out of the EPL anf join some exhibition football league where we can let idlers clap their hands to blisters watching fanciful stuff. You know why william hill and other bokmakers have droped you into second spot and put us into top spot? because, they know that we have the Character to do the business. last year, you were saved by a plethora of key injuries we faced, but this season, we are well covered. by the way, how good was Manure yesterday?

Giridhar,

over the last three seasons, we were poor in some matches too. That is the nature of the game. You cannot always be at the top of your game. The boys are human still and all humans have off days. Besides, we have not exactly had any easy matches yet tho. pompey this year is a whole different proposition and their subsequent matches will prove that. liverfluke always plays above themselves when they meet us. Reading at home is always a hard nut to crack. Playing a team like B’ham that is just back from championship and wanting to prove a point is always tricky- remember wigan two seasons ago?
So get 10 out of 12 max points and sitting on top of the table, cannot be a mean achievement, can it? So can we stop the moaning and get behind the boys to revv it up even more pls?

Chelsea has really spoilt us over the last few years. We have become pretty fastidious. but hey, that can only be good for us cos it drives us onto greater heights.

I dont think barceona will be selling Ronaldinho to Chelsea.Hes the heart of their squad and they will definitely take time to cope with his deaparture.
If some miracle does happens and Ronaldinho does come in, very good for Chelsea.

He can add some of that flair that ‘FootballGuy’ keeps talking about:)..I think hes obsessed with Chelsea playing beautiful football:)
Bluegal is right in that he’ll increase Business,Merchandise sales n stuff. He also has an army of fans all over the world. So it will definitely increase our fan base as well.

He can easliy slot into our set up.Just pair him up front just behind Drogba in a 4-4-1-1 with Shaun/Joe and Malouda in the wings. He can also play on one of the wings in a 4-3-3 with Drogba Up front.

I wouldnt be too worried even if Ronaldinho doesnt arrive..Our present squad minus injuries is already one of the best and most effective squads in the world. Its true they havent played anywhere near their best for the 1st four games…yet we are top of the table..So they can only get better with each passing game.

There are a few lill things bothering me though………
Why isnt Sheva being played??..According to chelsea Fc, only ballack, carvalho & bridge are injured and unfit to compete. So why isnt sheva playing??..Mourinho should try him in our 4-4-2.It suits his style a lot.
And why isnt ALEX being played at CB in the absence of Carvalho???..Alex has come in with a better reputation that Ben haim. Why is Mourinho not trying Alex at CB???..Maybe he might Flop there..but we’ll never know till we try right.

What do you guys think of belleti??..I cant say anything because i feel too early to judge him..
If Bellti does comes good, would you guys prefer him at RB or Ferreira at RB???

its a bit like having a managing director. You spend time and money looking for the best candidate you can find to run your newly acquired company. You find one with a good CV…he accepts the job setting out clear deliverables and goes to work . He expects to be judged by results….and results he brings.

Slowly, your company performance is turned around. stock rises, you get many admirers and friends. you are turning into a worldwide brand. you even have your own private hate club. Your Manager is a good manager you think to your self. It does seem that you are on the path to recovery. Your product is acknowledged as pragmatic, effiecient, durable and effective. It grows quite popular in the market though some shareholders/consumers think the packaging should be a little brighter like that of the competition (which leads you to electric yellow).

Delinma, You should have a good reason for sacking an obviously good manager. The best grounds for that is non performance except of course if you are REALly MADrid. All performance indicators show everything is on track.

But your friends continue to argue that it is sufficient that the packaging of your product is not colorful.

What do you do?

try 101greatgoals.com has all the latest goals. The portsmouth game was not bad, i would consider it average for chelsea. I wouldnt say i was blown away by the performance but the important three points is what we got in the end which is why im not complaining. The only thing i cant stand really is essien in rightback. He is one of the best center midfielders in the world and has some great shooting too. Now that we have belletti and paulo, maybe diarra, even ben hiam as back up rightbacks i dont see why essien should continue to play in his irregular position. Go Chelsea this will hopefully be the historic season of the quadruple. Blue4lyfe

BigBadBlue, that was super analogy. Really brilliant. What a pity that we should succumb to the competition and opt for “Electric Yellow”? How sad!

Mr Michael

If you don’t understand ” our obsession” it’s quite understandable.
Sometimes we don’t understand ourselves.
Or at least I don’t understand myself.
When competition you gotta understand that you gotta believe that whatcha gotta got in the best to win
And we understand that !

Folks, I highly doubt SAF is done shopping, because Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has just retired, Rooney’s out, and Saha is pathetic. He needs one more striker to be competetive up-front all the time. Let’s see whether he can still improve in 3 days.
