Maysam, I wasn't coupling the players as subs for one another, just combinations of players that could probably play in the same position... I realize how different Cole's game is than Essien's :D And I agree that Essien should play every second he can. And about SWP, I agree.
M_D good thought that Lamps shouldn't be penciled in just because of his name, but I do think that JM will be courageous enough to drop him, and any other player (Ballack in particular) who underperforms. And who knows, he might not even need to. Lamps certainly has the ability to stay in the first team.
Joe Cole anywhere is fantastic. I love him!

Midfield_Decider, good point but you should appreciate the difficulty Jose faces when the deputy captain, Lampard is benched. I think he knows deep down that Lamp in the later part of last season had really dropped in his performances. Joe Cole for attacking mid will not be a bad idea at all but my thinking is that the thrust, push and power essien gives the team when moving forward is second to none. and I say this not because I come from Ghana. On the basis of day to day performance, only, Cech, Terry, Carvalho, essien and drogba should fit the tag of untouchables. All the rest including lamps must fight for their place. Part of the reason why we suffered last year was Jose's inability to upset either ballack or lamps. we should not have a repeat of that this year. all the same Mour remains the best coach as far as am concerned. how many coaches could keep player unrest at the minimum level Jose has accomplished when have a squad of 22 internationals.

Mourofsame,
I found interesting your points about Jose and the team selection you offered.
I agree with you that the attacking midfielder should not always be Lampard (or Ballack) but I don't think that Jose will find enough courage and wisdom in himself to drop Lampard. And because of that I don't agree with you that Jose is the best manager we could have.
I think, instead of Lampard, the attacking midfield role can be given to Joe Cole. Why not? He's fast, creative and can dribble. And at the same time we can use Robben and Malouda on the wings so that only one of our wingers (SWP) will be benched. Essien is as the defensive midfielder. Mikel can be his substitute, he's still very yound and has lot to play ahead of him.

You guys who leave out Frank Lampard as part of your Head-inthe-clouds; team selection, COME BACK DOWN TO EARTH!
Lampard is first choice, even though he's not the superstar the medea made him out to be a few years ago, he's still a super player.
YOU'LL REALIZE JUST HOW IMPORTANT HE IS ONLY WHEN HE'S GONE.

Maysam and Adonis, I think you both have made very good points about what formation to use. Jose the coach has decided on 4-4-2 incorporating wingers as his main formation for the season. I said earlier that I hope Jose will have the courage to bench Lamps sometimes if he is not on top of his game. And frankly, if am asked to choose the the two leading central midfielders we have at the moment, i will easily go for Mikel as the Defensive Mid and Essien as the attacking one. The two wingers to add to them for me will be Malouda and robben. Robben can always give way to joe cole coming from the bench and Louda for Kalou from the bench. On the evidence of form shown so far, i will go as far as starting Ben Haim on the left unless a Cole comes back sooner. Ferreira for me starts from the right. The front two for now will be Drogs and sheva, but I can't wait for Jan to see Sheva and Pizzaro. Something tells those wil click like magic. Drogba is benefitting from Sheva but I do not think he has helped Sheva lots.

ADonis : well , I respect your idea but i don't agree with your last formation.
Cole and Essien are totally different that are not good sub for each other. and I believe we should use Essien in every game. by the way, don't forget SWP , I don't like him , but he is improving , he has changed a lot maybe jose chooses him in his initial line up , who knows?
but i think jose will choose 4-2-2 because he said and chelsea play 4-2- in most of his friendly games.

Jetix, none of your points are valid. Chinese teams SUCKED compared to the effort showed by the teams we played. All three games were hotly contested. No one is saying our players are rusty. In fact, they all look quite sharp. We have rarely been sending long balls. If you watched any of the games in the preseason you would have seen the solution JM has provided. He's gone away from long balls and now he's playing a lot more through the wings.

Maysam, a 4-4-2 is going to probably have Malouda and Robben on the wings with Essien and Mikel, Ballack and Cole interchangeable. Of course SWP and Kalou will also be competing in case of injuries (read: Robben) or fatigue.
Makalele and particularly Sidwell are going to play very little.
Now keep in mind that we are still challenging for four titles. Now we will have NO PROBLEM WHATSOEVER playing these four competitions, whether it be injuries or fatigue, as we are very deep at each position.
A multitude of talents is not a problem under a strong coach, and you would certainly agree that JM is a badass who's not scared of his players.
I want JM to play a 4-3-3, as that would give Sheva a better chance of starting, which I'm hoping for this season. I think even if he doesn't score, he's always dangerous and has immensely helped Drogba's form.
I'd prefer a 4-3-3 with Mikel/Maka in the center, Lampard/Ballack on the left, and Essien/Cole on the right, with Robben/Malouda, Drogba, and Sheva up front.

Mourofsame: if we choose 4-4-2 , what are we gonna do with Mikel , Essien .
CM : Frank , Ballack , Essien , Mikel , Make , froget sidwell , he is not gonna play that much.
Wing : Cole, Robben, SWP , Malouda.
4-3-3
-----------------------------Cech|Cudicini--------------------------
Fereira|Glen----Terry|Ben----Carvaliho|Alex----Ashly|Wayne
---------------------------------Mikel|Essien-----------------------
-----------------Frank|Sidwell----------Ballack|Essien|Mikel---
SWP|Cole-----------------------------------------RobbeN|Maluda
--------------------------Shev|Drogba|Pizarro--------------------
I
but
4-4-2
--------------------------------Cech|Carlo---------------------------
Fereira|Glen----Terry|Ben----Carvaliho|Alex----Ashly|Wayne
SWP|Cole--------------Frank|Sidwell-----Ballack|Mikel|Essien-----Robben|Malouda
--------------------Sheva|Pizarro------Drogba|Kalou----------------
as you see, in the middle we have so many choices, we have to cross of good players like Essien or ballack.

I think this season Jose choose 4-4-2 according ot his interviews but I do believe 4-3-3 is better but I also believe we should change in our style becasue opponents can predict our ideas .

Manure were held 2-2 by some pretty ordinary team in the first match. Remember how in our first season under Mour we started with grinding results and then came alive when Robben and Duff combinations transformed us into a team that routinely scored three goals or more sometimes. Last season, we could not do that partly cos our wingers were injured and also cos Ballack and Sheva simply failed to reach the anticipated heights. This year however, Mour has wealth in depth in front, wings and especailly midfield. Once Mour has promised to discard the unwieldy Diamond for a more attacking 4-4-2 incorporating two wingers, expect things to be different on the attacking end.

meanwhile, those praising Manure today have so soon forgotten that this was the same team lots of pundits were almost giving up on when Jose took the EPL by storm and spanked them home and away culminating in their being third. Suddenly, just because crisis hit Chelsea lost out to them two matches or so to close the season, they are supposed to be some invincible. They are not. Ask any genuine Manure fan, and he will confess to you that even with all our woes last season, they knew that we were still the better team than them. And we proved it in the FA finals when they were despearate to beat us to prove that they merited to be called champions of England. No disrespect tho to them but we will put them back in their place this year. I watched us home and away against Barca last season and away against Valencia and we were nothing short of spectacular.
