Our scorelines weren't as impressive with the 4-3-3 the second time around to the point where JM actually changed it to a 4-4-2 diamond midway through thes season. If you cast your mind back, you should remember we were knocked out by Liverpool in the FA cup after JM had for three or maybe five or six successive games opted against using a 4-3-3. We had wingers available, he just chose not to use them. WHY? I can only believe it was because it was clear to him we were having problems creating chances with that 4-3-3 and some sort of change was needed. BTW our 'Record breaking' points haul was in that year was more down to our rock solid defence than our goalscoring. We conceded only 15 goals while Arsenal actually scored a lot more than us. But t back to my main point; How effective is our 4-4-3 when we ned to force the issue? Let's face it, that's where we lost to Liverpool in the semis and to Barcelona the year before. When it's crying out for us to take the initiative we just dont have enough invention going forward with that system. Ther'es been a warning for Ballack, He's pointed out the need to play Essien in midfield this year and he also said 'he is the kind of player we need in the midfield if we drop one midfielder' (or something similar).
