Another late goal and another final. I was keen to see the reactions of two people in the Old Trafford stands – Alex Ferguson and Roman Abramovich. While I couldnt see Fergie’s reaction, I did see that Roman was absolutely enjoying our win. All those talks about Roman absenting himself from the Valencia match at Mestalla will now quiet down as he was here to watch Chelsea proceed to their second final of the season. In the media, Jose still sounds that he has a hint from the top about his removal. Once again he says that the people at the top in Chelsea should speak up and end all this speculation.
Jose chose a team which I wasn’t too happy about. May be, there were two crucial errors in the team selection which made this a much more difficult match for us. One is Maka starting and playing for about minutes. For all that he is capable of, he was not as effective as I’d want a defensive midfielder to be. Not only he lost possession but also in some key areas. He did not appear to intercept and abort the opposition attacks. I should say, unfortunately, he was our weakest link in this match. The second one was Essien starting as the right back. Essien should definitely play as much as he can but let’s relieve him from the purely defensive roles. I can understand if he plays as a stop gap defender but when Diarra was available, Essien should have played as the holding midfielder. Time and again, Essien’s positional errors in the backline caused us too much problems and also gave them too much confidence and strength to come forward.
Earlier, my customary pre-match Winning Eleven game on Xbox against Blackburn was quite reassuring. Believe me, it had some striking similarities with the real match. Drogba scored in the 21st minute and Jason Roberts equalised in the 62nd minute. This match also went to the extra time when Lampard cleaned it off in the 93rd minute.
Typically, we were not in it for the first 10 minutes. As we settled down nicely I could see a goal coming along. The huge difference that the presence of Joe Cole and Essien makes is that it adds quite a bit a creativity and strength to our attacks. Drogba showed how well he was reading the game, when he refused to go down and holding the ball until he played it to oncoming Ballack. Big Boy Ballack made a simple but effective throughball to Lampard, who was once again, in the right place and at the right time. The way Lampard touched the ball, beat the defender, positioned himself and finished neatly was awesome. Frank seems to be a real striker material and no wonder he has now 21 goals in this season while Fibreglass scored only his first goal of the season on Saturday.
Lampard Goal

All through the first half, it looked like another match of Chelsea domination without the scoreline really reflecting that. if I say that the second half started brightly, it would be partially true. Around the 48th minute, Drogba selflessly passed to Sheva right in front of the goal, where he himself could have scored. Sheva, so embarrassingly mis-hit a simple tap-in that would have finished off the match. About 15 minutes later, Jose subbed Sheva, which almost looked like he was punishing him for his poor show, while Roman was watching it all from the stands. Later on, I started to realise that this could end being a closer game than most of us thought. For some lengthy periods of time, Blackburn held possession and started to look more and more dangerous. Though the way we conceded was unfortunate, they completely deserved to equalise.
Rovers could not break us down the middle. Attack after attack, they only tried to cross from the flanks. Not surprisingly, most of their crosses came from their right flank as they were determined to test and trouble Essien. At least in the second half, I expected Jose to bring in Diarra. One more positional error by Essien gave a free header to Gamst Pedersen who, unbelievably, missed that sitter. Had it gone in, it would have put us in a very precarious position. Throughout the match, Carvalho was fantastic and truly outshone Terry, who was having a very ordinary match. Once again, Mikel played a gem of a role for the short time he played. I wish he had started and played all of 120 minutes. Despite all this Essien played really well. It’s just that he was at the right back and he couldnt do justice to this role. Whenever he had the ball, Rovers just could not come to terms with his pace. Though he was doubtful in off the ball stiuations, whenever he had the ball, his holding skills and distribution were excellent.
Drogba has been having the season of his life and for all that we have achieved this season so far, we owe a lot to his form. I have been writing in this blog that Drogba now wants to score spectacular goals than just goals. I see that this could even affect his game and form, if this goes beyond a certain limit. There was this 360 degree spin he did for keeping the ball closed on the sidelines and failed to keep it in. That was something he could have held possession without any of those theatrics. I can understand if one does a 360 degree spin to beat a defender that would put him in front of the goal, but not when you could have held possession with a simple touch. I’m sure Jose has been watching his game. Let’s leave this to him.
It was nice to see both teams going for a win and not hoping for the penalties. As we moved on to the extra time and the second half of the ET, though it looked more and more anybody’s match, surely, the last 15 mins of the match belonged to Chelsea. We played with some kind of determination and created more meaningful set-ups and were more creative in attack while Blackburn kept on crossing to the far post. Kalou and SWP were both very dynamic and it was quite natural they were involved in the set -up of the winner. Good little cameo by SWP, who flicked in a low cross to Kalou which was fumbled. Then came in Ballack, positioning himself well and blasting home a left footer. Man, I loved his celebration!
Ballack Goal

It’s not just his assist and the goal. Ballack put in a quite determined effort all along. He was tough in his tackles, made good passes and did not buckle down in physical play. The free kick he took was a near miss. I was just hoping for the free kick that goes out and curves in to the top corner ala Carlos. We have seen him do that before. Lampard did the job well on again though he was not the fulcrum of our midfield. In a team like ours, where you have so many players that can take resposibilities, you’re going to see one or the other taking the bigger role and delivering the goods. It may not always be Ballack or Lampard or Essien or whoever. They take turns and we are going to be disappointed about those who did not deliver that day to our statisfaction.
Jose after the match:
Michael Ballack has been a top professional since day one. He fights for the team in an unbelievable way and is doing a very good job for us. I thought that Blackburn were amazing. They fought like heroes and all of them – the manager, the crowd, the players – deserve all my respect because they were amazing and gave us a really good game. It is sad because one team has to lose but they must be proud of themselves. My team must be proud also. We are still on for the Quadruple and we must enjoy that. We could win all four, or we could lose the next three, but we live in the moment and are happy.
The real heroes of this match were Carvalho and Cech. Both were brilliant and they were probably the difference between the two sides. I hope Cech produces more such performances in the matches to come in this season.
It is a general question people ask: “If we play like we did today, can we beat Man Utd?”. That’s a very unfair question I’d say, while the answer is No. When we play Man Utd on May 19 at the Wembley, it is another day, another mindset, one of us being league champions, some missing players, possibly different levels of motivation and hunger to win. May 19 looks too far now but anyway, as Jose said he is not on a holiday, we have so many crucial matches coming up. Let’s look at one match at a time. With this kind of performance can we beat West Ham away? Yes we can.

Thanks to Cech for his marvellous saves. As usual, Lampard did an excellent job. Ballack did exceptionally good at this game during extra time. He gave a great concluding end against the hard fight with Blackburn. What a long game!
Cheers

good job chelsea….i actually dedicate this comment to ballack, who 2day was without a doubt man of the match. His passes were great, his runs were sweet, he was unselfish, didn’t do too many fouls, and he got to score a goal. That is the real ballack. The only problem is shevchenko, when will he start to come around? What i want to talk about is specifically drogba. Drogba, with all respect is a great player as he is the top scorer for chelsea this season but i think he is getting a bit way ahead of himself. I mean he is kinda selfish at times, wants to score super goals, and is now taking free kicks. I mean we already have lamps and ballack who i honestly say are better at the free kicks than drogba. Drogba also tends to go back a lot on counter attacks and wants to recieve the ball from half court and pass all the defenders and score. I mean i understand that he wants to do as much as he can to help chelsea, but he should be more reasonable. Drogba should be mostly around his area which is the area of the opponents penalty box, no problem in going back and supporting defense but that is where he should be most of the time. He is the best palyer we have in the air and he can recieve balls, short or long and tuck them in the net. Since he is probably the only decent striker we have (sheva not close to what he was in milan, and kalou inconsistent performance) drogab is our only real attacker. I mean i love drogba but he should just stick to what he does best, shower the opponents net with goals. Good lick chelsea we are in for a hell of a seaon with manchester united. I hope we beat them in all competitions and shut them up once and for all. Blue4lyfe
Amazing fight, amazing game for Ballack, and it has erased any doubt I still had… yes, Ballack can play the English game, and he can excell like in Germany… The question now is how consistently he can do it.
Abdullah… about Drogba, you’re right about the freekick thing, but other than that, you’re not watching the same games I am. He distributes the ball so well, so often. Compared to the amount of time he has the ball, he’s not selfish at all. C Ronaldo is a selfish player. Robben is a selfish player… Drogba isn’t.
YES! Chelsea advance, YES! We play MANURE at Wembley, and YES!!! Ballack is getting in form.
I loved the passion shown by Ballack after the goal. Breathtaking stuff.
Guys honestly speaking we are nowhere the level expected form us and what we can do…Drogba has poor ball control, Sheva seems to have feeble legs, our midfield is very straight and can’t unlock the opposition and now even defense looking porous…not sure if we can stand ManU’s blizzards…I can only hope for happy ending.
Agree with the Drogba comments, all of them. At times he is much too selfish but he has distributed well at times as well. His pass to Sheva today was perfect and I was crushed to see him stumble over it. I do think that Sheva has been better of late but today was not his best game. Ballack has played well over the last couple weeks. Today he and Lampard worked as well together as they have all year.
Shev is the weak link in our team right now , even i cld hav finished that set-up from Drogba , Shev seems to be trying too hard and not doing the simple things right which gets the goals!!!!
On the other hand why Drogba has to involve himself in everything????? He was rubbish with the free-kicks still he comes everytime to hav a go , why??? when we already hav Lamps and Ballack!!!! He tries to be a big show pony , and that is not his strenghth , let Rooney , Henry etc. do it!!!!
Drogba is our targetman and the targetman cannot possibly hav the space to show off the stuff he wants to!!!!! He shld focus on his game and not try to ruin it , BC u say that JM will correct that , if that was the case Drog wld hav not been doing this for half the season , and i think JM is the one encouraging him!!!!
All he has to do is give Drog some stick and ask him to stick to his job and not try to be Kaka , but it seems JM likes Drog to do the stupid stuff he cant pull-off!!!! Drog is not selfish , but really this is what u expect from an immature newcomer trying to win over the fans and the manager and not a 28 year old power centre-forward!!!!
Drogba do need some rest now…. he was looking tired right after half hour mark…even lampard looked a bit too tired through out the match.. could not see the same energy level in him nor in his free kicks and corners.. the precision with which he used to pick terry last season.. i think he has too many options now with ballack and carvalho around too..
And didnt u guys saw the thunderbolt of essien… it should have broken the post… even the rebound came back to him nearly ;)
right from the start i feared sheva is goona have a broken leg today.. black burn r cruel.. thats y he couldnt played well.. i think it was more of mental.. sheva couldnt settle right from the start.. rightly subbed(thank god) when everyone was thinking it will be drogba after his injury..
with west ham next if we can put tavez under check it should not be a problem as there relegation battle is nearly over after loss to sheffield united.. hope jose gives drogba and lampard some deserved rest … anyways away games r always troublesome..
hope for the best…. the fight is on
cheers
Gaurav
joe blu u are right drogba is show boating far to much but isnt that how hes notched up the goals this season???
I say Ballack is finally getting the hang of it. It does take time to adjust, even for seasoned players like him.
GO CHELSEA!
These guys are gonna give me a heart attack. I can’t even watch the games anymore…. I simply check the net for the scores after. Lets face it folks, Chelsea is not playing well at the moment. Late winners like these will not win us any titles especially against teams like Man U.
ESSIEN NEEDS TO PLAY IN THE MIDFIELD!!!! Diarra is our right back!!! We need Essien in the midfield for his dynamism and creativity. The inside plays are not gonna do the job 4 us. We are lacking width in the midfield, and Im afraid the only way we are going to solve this problem is if we get Joe Cole in the game and rotate Frank & Ballack. They are similar types of players and while we can admit that they are world class players, they are unfortunately not very creative. Get Essien on the right, joe on the left and Mikel as the holding midfielder. & forget SWP…..he’s giving me a headache. Drogba needs to calm down now and score goals!!!!!!!!! he’s already proven himself…….whats he trying to do now. plz Jose, tell Drogba that the free kicks are for Ballack & Frank
All the best tho guys……. Chelsea 4 lyphe!!!!!!
We’re still in it!!!!!!!
We can still do it!
CHELSEA 4 LYPHE!!!!!!!!!!!CHELSEA 4 LYPHE!!!!!!!!!!!
ALL 4 BELONG TO US……
Drogba is anything but selfish, the goal Sheva missed, he could have taken it himself but pass it instead to Sheva who was in better position, he helps a lot in defence too, re our perfirmance, how often do you hear us say ‘if it were a better team’ this season? but always comes up with a winner, I believe when we play Manu we will be up to it
Great winning teams sqeak thru, blast thru, romp thru and sneak thru competitions against all logic and probability.
And that’s what we’ve got in Chelsea at the moment.
( Credit to Blackburn tho )
But all the other teams know that CFC is now more than a talented ( and expensive bunch of individuals.
They can feel Chelsea’s bonding and becoming a real menace to them in terms of grit, physicality and tactics and nerve.
Like BC said ” Be afraid , be very afraid ”
And Keep the Faith ( Actually I’m getting quite used to it )
see, now ballack will play shitty for the next one month. jose will not drop him because he likes him and he played well in the fa cup semi final. now we have only one month left and if anyone seems to be out of form, we should bench them and move along.
jose begs the chelsea top mgmt to speak up to clear the rumours and confusion but nobody seems to speak up. why can’t roman appear before the press and say that jose will remain here for atleast another season? since he is not doing this makes me believe that jose might get the sack this summer – only a treble (with or without premiership) might stop roman from sacking jose. i dont think any treble winning coach has ever been ‘sacked’.
Yo Anonymous , i dont quite agree with u , the goals he has scored (except for a handful) , hav all been clinical poachings rather than with the skills and styles of the ball , remember the headers , the blast shots and the power strikes???? Thats the real Drog not the one who tries to dribble around in the box or outwit defenders , u can count on ur fingers how many times Drog has scored this way!!!!!
Drog needs to keep it straight and simple, he has been gifted with a very strong , quick and agile body and shld use it to his advantages rather than attempting what the clinical-strikers do , he is the traditional power-forward , the targetman …………not the hitman!!!!
