Crisis? What Crisis?

We are in a spot of bother. Is that because we are on a losing streak? No, but it is because we are drawing ’some’ matches that we are expected to win and we are not able to score fluently as we used to. So is this a crisis? With my understanding of the game and life, it is certainly not.

Before we go to the reasons for the spot for this bother, let’s see where we are at this period of mid-january:

1. Second in the Premiership with just six points behind Man Utd.
2. In the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League after topping a difficult group that had the defending champions
3. In the semi-finals of the League Cup with an advantageous home leg to be played
4. In the round of 16 in the FA Cup
5. An unbeaten streak of 13 matches

Same time last season when Man Utd were trailing us by 15 points, did you hear anyone say that Man Utd are in a crisis? With Arsenal consistently under-performing since we out-throned them, how many used the word ‘crisis’? The last time Liverpool won the league was 16 bloody years back. They have not won the FA Premier League since its inception. A decade of crisis? No. Why is that when Chelsea is in a 13-match unbeaten streak, this is being called a crisis? Believe it or not. The Press loves to write about Chelsea. They want to find some story or the other on Chelsea, or if they dont find one, they create one.

Now, what are the reasons why we are in a spot of bother? Many might disagree but I’m very clear that the points we have dropped were not because of the under-performance of the new signings. We have been dropping points not because we are unable to score but because we keep conceding. In fact, I would appreciate Jose’s astute signing of Hilario, when everyone thought it is a useless transfer. He is completely vindicated. A month after the closure of the transfer window, Cech and Cudicini are stretchered off in the same match and imagine there is no other goalkeeper in the squad. It would have been a disaster, we would be in a bigger deficit by this time.

GK Stats.PNG

Losing Cech and Cudicini on the same day is a big loss not only on the field but also off the field. I’m sure it must have been a huge dent on the confidence on the Chelsea players. I know that many fans of other clubs had already written off Chelsea’s chances. The team has shown tremendous steel and courage to come out of the terrible shock and surviving a tough period. Hilario is an average goalkeeper but I’m sure he has done better than what the third choice goalkeeper of other teams would have done.

He showed no nerves in making his debut in the Champions League match against defending champions Barca. To lose Robben, the live wire winger who was getting back on form, and then losing John Terry, the heart of our Chelsea defence, and then Boulahrouz, the only other central defender just when he had played his best 30 minutes . . . I’m reminded of the Murphy’s law - when things ‘can’ go wrong, it ‘will’.

What are the chances of losing two first choice keepers and two central defenders in a space of a couple of months, before this season, I would have said none, unless they all travel in the same car and meet with an accident! And never ever say that Jose released Gallas. William Gallas wanted to leave at any cost, for no reason. I would never try to retain an unmotivated, revolting player with a negative influence on the rest of the team.

The whole team deserves a big round of applause for where we are now. After we lost half a dozen players (all of them are crucial), many players had to play out of position. With Cech in goal, Terry, Carvalho, Ashley and Khalid/Geremi in the back, the under-performance of Sheva or Ballack would not have hurt us at all. Because, we were playing so well that for the intial couple of months, we were able to make up with their start-up time. I dont expect Jose to predict that we would lose two goalkeepers and two central defenders and a winger, all in few months.

Drogba has been brilliant but the credit should go to the whole team who have withstood this difficult period without losing too many points. All this talk like “but for Drogba, Chelsea would be tottering etc” is all rubbish. There are always one or two strong performers in any team any season. What is Arsenal without Henry in all those seasons? Where would Man Utd be if Ronaldo was injured for months on the first day of the season? Last two seasons, I think the ‘restless fans’ of Chelsea would have been hunting for Drogba’s head, calling him as ‘Jose’s blunder’, “waste of space’, ‘waste of money’ and wanting him to be sold. I hope they are all happy with his performance this season.

I’m a big fan of the Special One. Jose knows. He won us the back-to-back titles. He thinks ahead of most people and thats why his current day decisions may not be appealing to some people. The club is thinking big in terms of the world market and big name players. He is one way or the other forced to sign big players for the benefit of the club. Talk is always about a team of big players and internationals in the Chelsea team. Can you imagine how difficult it is to motivate a bunch of players who have tasted a lot of success already?

The very fact that we have won back-to-back titles will mean that we may not be as hungry for success as we were in the last two seasons. Jose has managed to keep the hunger of the team intact by creating this desire of winning all the trophies. Press might call it arrogance. In my eyes, this is the only feat that might really interest most of the already-successful international players, so it is Jose’ way of motivating the big names. If there is one manager who has the strong personality to manage well-established stars, superstars and internationals, that is Jose Mourinho. His tactical acumen need not be proven. Four league titles, one uefa cup, two domestic cups, one champions league - and all this in 6 six years. If Jose leaves Chelsea, that will be very very unfortunate for Chelsea.

My favourite Jose quote, when asked if he is under pressure:

Pressure . . what pressure? Pressure is for millions of parents who cannot feed their children

Pure genius.

I love the belief and support of the Liverpool fans. Even when they were 1-5 down at the Anfield, they were singing and cheering their team till the end of the match. No league title in 16 years and they support their club like crazy. Chelsea deserves such kind of fans and not the kind of restless glory-hunting kids. As a fan I would criticise but would never abuse like some of the so-called ‘fans’ now do. And I believe. If there is no such thing called belief, there won’t be fans for most of the clubs in football.

I still believe that we can win all four. Even if we end up with no trophies this year, I’m ready to back my team. After all there can be only one winner and you cannot always be the one, even though you want to. I’m proud of Chelsea and our lion-hearted players and our aggressive and intelligent manager and our visionary owner. I’ll support Chelsea, whichever league we’re in.

Well written BC. I really feel proud being fan of this club. “Special One” is simply the best in business. But he has made us addictive of one thing i.e. “Winning”. Thats why there has been such a uproar against recent failures. But going by facts our fanbase increased significantly past 2-3 years. Most of them are used to habit of “Winning”. Hence they are calling it crisis.
But lets get retrospective. Just 5-6 years ago, beating spurs/bolton/newcastle was much more joyous than aiming to have more silverware. Every blues had a dream of being league champion and russian revolution made it possible (along with the our pillar players such as Lamps, JT, Maka etc and yes “the special one”). People don’t understand that we were an average club by then. I was extremely happy when we were coming 3rd-4th. But after winning the league the expectations have rose significantly. Even I like to see us win in every game nowadays.
But lets not forget we shall be united come what may. Lets support the club. If we dont win this time there is always a other time.
Come On Chels!!!!
Lets beat everyone…..

Well written BC, my respect to you.

Well, I can be called “glory-hunter” since I have been supporting Chelsea for 2 years, since the match which hardly any of you will ever forget, i.e Chelsea-Barca 4-2. You know I’m not british, I am Turk.
But still even if there is any “crisis” I keep supporting Chelsea, I just don’t support Jose and his mistakes.
You said that William Gallas wanted to leave himself yet you forgot to write the reason, he left because he wasn’t played at his position, centre-back. How couldn’t Jose satisfy such an exceptional player as Gallas? He could play Gallas in Carvalho’s position. Carvalho is a portugese and Jose could persuade him to plat as full-back. I don’t think Carvalho is incapable of playing as a full-back. Briefly losing him was a big mistake. My personal belief is that Willy was as valuable for Chelsea as Terry. He could equally defend and attack. Another mistake was selling Gudjohnsen. Jose just couldn’t use him as he cannot use Sheva now. Look how Eidur plays and scores in Barca. And what will you say about Jose’s obsession of Ballack? You cannot compare Drogba or Essien of previous years with this Ballack. Both Drogba and Essien played their football even if they didn’t play that well. Drogba, particularly, was criticized only because of his lack of goals and diving but he was a team-player, he was a pivot for Lampard, Gudjonsen and wingers to score goals. And what is doing Ballack? He doesn’t play, he is useless. With him Chelsea is playing with 10 men. And what is more even if he will start playing very well he is very similar to Lampard. There is another Lamps-Gerrard problem. Chelsea needs a creative midfielder like Ronaldinho or Kaka. Jose simply doesn’t understand this.

Ok, maybe Jose is in his “making mistakes and learning from mistakes” process this year, after all it’s only his 6th year as a manager, so he’s young yet. Then let Abramovich continue with Jose, and let’s see what happens next. But you can forget about this year and consider it as an investment to Jose’s managerial knowledge of football. Still I’d like to be mistaken.

By the way, blue has always been my favourite colour. So come on, paint the Europe in Blue!

Jose is a very shrewd manager. He knows exactly what is needed to secure a win. He knows whom to play and whom not to play. The reason why we find him play certain unproductive players could be because of some pressure from the Club. It happens in life. Due to some pressure from higher authorities, it’s quite possible that you might have to accomodate someone in your team, even though you dont quite like it.

He just defends himself and his club when he said it is himself who decides on the team and not anyone else. He cant say to the Press that RA insists that Sheva and Ballack should play. Believe me, if people like you and me, who watch football on telly are able to see Ballack does not produce anything, a manager who has won 4 consecutive league titles and a champions league title would definitely know this.

On any day, I have to admit that Jose would know more on football than I do.

Let’s get this straight. Gallas was played out of position. But he perfomed really well whether he was in centre back or left back. When he started crying about this, Jose did offer him a permanent centre back role as Ashley was anyway Chelsea-bound and Wayne Bridge was coming back from his loan. This is the reason why Gallas after quitting Chelsea never said that he quit because he was played out of position. Do you realise that, for Arsenal too, in some matches, Gallas has played in left back? He has realise that his market value has gone and his CV looks better now!

That apart, as a player, whatever he wants to convey to the coach about his playing position is an internal discussion. If a player revolts against the team and management and he fails to turn up for the training and the tour, I simply dont need him. If I were Jose, I would let such a play rot in the reserve until his contract is over and he learns some discipline and manners. I would do this even if the player in question is Terry, Lampard, Henry, Ronaldinho, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gerrard whoever.

As much as I admire Gallas for his game, I’m so happy that such a trouble-maker is out of the squad now.

BC, I thought of this too but I doubt that it is true.

If Jose could see the Ballack problem he wouldn’t call him “untouchable” at least. We know that Sheva is Abramovich’s favourite and not Ballack but still Jose has played Ballack more than Sheva even if the team’s main problem was Ballack. Besides even if Abramovich told Jose to play at least one of those stars he would be wiser to play Sheva since he is helping Drogba and others and trying hard to score himself while Ballack is simply messing around and destroying the team’s core system.

Thus I have to disagree with you.

I’ll tell you, many a times, I have to support my boss’ decision and have to see his idea through, even though I may not completely agree with him. Jose might think of winning this league title. But the club is thinking about Chelsea’s position over the next 5 or 10 years.

The signing of Sheva and Ballack were not purely for footballiing reasons and thats for anyone to see. The club wants to grow more and more popular and they realise winning back-to-back title has not helped them increase the fan base. Dont we have people following Barca for Ronaldinho? or AC Milan for Sheva earlier?

Believe me or not, many football beginners in Asia, started following Chelsea because, Sheva and Ballack are playing for us. Big names always draw crowds, be it in the stadium or in the TV viewership and increase the fan base.

Unfortunately, Sheva and Ballack have not been up to the mark, so far. It might sound too cliched now, but I would still say “they will come good very soon”

BC great post. Keep it up.
U answered all the questions laid by the “addicted in winning” fans or who blindly blame jose and our team on just drawing the game.
realise guyz we are playing with our third choice goaly, and we dont have wingers at the right moment. In english football you should definetely need wingers with you. UNFORTUNATELY our wingers are injured. Now question may ask why JM sell DUFF, now if duff was here then it would be a head ache coz not because of DUFF but because of large number of midfielders in the squad. It would be difficult to choose the first eleven..
we are only 6 points behind.Any way i am happy the way team is performing and how jose finding solution to the problems he and his team is facing…………….
BC what’s the BALLACK issue?. would you please make it clear..

Thanks a lot Zubinj9 and Chels!

Jose wanted Duff to stay and even Duff wanted to stay but he wanted to play first team football more often. Unfortunately, Jose could not promise him more premiership starts as Duff wanted. Among Joe Cole, Robben and Duff, if I have to lose one player, I would lose Duff and that\’s exactly what Jose did.

Jose was honest to him and he could not have Duff start often when he has Joe Cole and Robben. Obviously, he did not predict that both Cole and Robben would be out on injury and it is fair on his part to expect SWP to come good.

Do you also know that we agreed to sell Duff for a very low price so that Newcastle could match his salary that he got in Chelsea. A tribute to a player who played his heart out and left us with dignity.

About Sheva & Ballack.

I agree that Sheva would be RA’s choice and there is pressure on JM to play him.

But about Ballack, I don’t agree. I don’t think that Ballack was bought as a part of marketting strategy. He is brought to strenghthen the squad. Remeber we tried to sign Gerrard from L’pool. JM wanted to strenghten our midfield.

Personally I don’t think Ballack is failure.People who r saying Ballack is failure are the same people saying 1 - 2 years back that Drogba is failure or RC is failure.

And i don’t think its entirely their mistake.

Actually the difference is that when we signed RC, Drogba they were not as established & popular as Ballack is. So everyone expected Ballack to fit in Chelsea very smoothly. Certainly that is not the case & people are crying foul.

I hope Ballack & Sheva will come good and u r right BC they are not the reason we are 6 points behind Man U. As Jose said, we have to score 3 goals to win match as we are conceding 2 goals.
Some times we do it, some times we don’t.

Any ways good topic & well written. Hats off!!!

Hey midfield_decider ur right on the money as always!!!!
BC it seems like u interpret my post wrongly , i respect CFC but not JM , i respect the club not the management and i want people to respect CFC as well and if that defines me as a ‘glory-hunter’ so be it!!!!!

JM has won back-to-back titles but does that garuntee a treble??
I dont want a trophy every season but i wld luv it if we play beautiful football, yes football is a buisness but what JM has made of CFC is nothing more than a machine which cannot function when some parts r missing!!!!!

U blame everything on injuries what of Arsey u say , can we EVER do what they did this week (6-3) by the second string
that was beautiful football, can we do that even with our strongest team????
Manu r playing some of the most gorgeous football i hav seen and that is more important , CFC r not bigger than FOOTBALL
and since we dont play any how do u expect respect????

For whom , for what ???? JM spends 50 mn pounds every summer and still cries abt injuries???? Why????JM has made football ugly , destroyed careers and got CFC so much bad name that we havnt garnered for the past 100 yrs!!!!!

U speak of those days when we enjoyed a win over Bolton , Newcastle etc but u forget at that time we were respected by all u BC hav forgotten the true spirit of football and today i m sad for the footballing spirit has died in CFC fans hearts and i blame this on JM and fans like u!!!!!

THERE IS A CRISIS , JM AND FANS LIKE U HAV KILLED FOOTBALL AND OUR RESPECT!!!!!!

Respect - when Manu was winning in the 90’s, they were the most hated and least respected. They were always alleged of cheating and trying to win at the cost of the game and gamesmanship. And those third-rate war of words between Sir Alex and Wenger. You know how much hatred is there for Barca in Spain. That’s the price you pay for the champions tag.

Beautiful football - Chelsea played beautiful football for two seasons under José. If you dont agree, we have different understanding of the phrase - beautiful football. Many people feel only passing football is beautiful. Just their opinions and preferences. This season, when too many players are injured and too many had to play out of position, as a fan, i’m happy with what i’m seeing. I dont want us to play like arsenal - beating liverpool 6-3 one day and losing to Sheffield the other. Poor tactics and terrible inconsistency.

Nice pic of boy giving everyone the bird , BC
If his blood and neckerchief were blue would be even better.

I think the Brit chartalan / ManU -backing- cause -we -sell -more -copy- press has got on a lotta nerves.
The Brit press are just awful and making up news if they don’t have anything. And blowing up a little into smithereens .
They try to influence people ’speceliialy fans and young players.
Tabloids are awfull and so to read ur blog is so much better BC

One reason I became a CFC fan was we were a good if not great team in the past and I coul;dn’t stand Manure and Arsey monopolizing the titles and Liverpool fans mooming about the past when they were not so much better than CFC was a few years ago.

……..Especially Roy Keane , biggest cheater Arse-Hol
and dirtiest player around .If that bastard were not arrogant who is .? Just couldn’t stand him.
And Sir AF, I’m no gonna start about him.
But all of that turned me into a CFC fan . And when we are champions what does the press write about , crisis . I jiust don’t read em anymore .

So most fans should I think ignore the press and write whatever they want to . even if its kick out JM or whatever.

But my belief is that he is “the new Chelsea”
And even tho I’m not the real RA ,I’m astute enough to understand that changing the manager is not gonna change anything this season or the next coupl of seasons ..
And shit, where was it written in the godammned press that JM is under-pressure from and warned by the CFC board.
Who the hell is the CFC Board ?
There’s only RA who matters.
And he’s not one of the richest men in the world for nothing.
He’s not exactly of average IQ and EQ and what -not.

Keep the faith

I am sorry guys but joeblue is right.

Many of us keep repeating that we are only 6 points behind Mancs but you forget that we are criticizing Jose not for the current second spot but for the fact that the football Chelsea is playing currently DO NOT PROMISE for the gap to reduce. If we cannot beat Reading, Fulham, Aston Villa, Wycombe how on earth are we going to beat Liverpool at Anfield, Arsenal at Emirates and the best team in EPL for the time being ManUtd???

Many of us including Jose keep repeating that it’s laughable that people call crisis 3 draws in a row but you forget that 3 draws mean only 1 win and 2 LOSSES in terms of points!!!!

Well about the beautiful football thing, I would like to agree with BC. CFC has played the most beautiful football in the world, the misconseption is that beautiful football means scoring outrageous goals.
According to me beautiful football means an overall attacking and a defensive game. It includes controlling the midfield and dictating the pace of the game.
If you look at all these qualties CFC had all of them for the past 2 years (not for some matches now) and this is the type of soccer Man U are playing right now.

Looks like you’re a first timer here. A warm welcome to you!

Brilliant explanation from you for the term beautiful football. Most people tend mistake beautiful goal for beautiful football.

Football is much more than scoring goals. Believe me, I love watching the Chelsea defence than attack - the way they tackle, the way the win the ball, the way the anticipate and intercept - beautiful football!

Thanks BC, I got your invitation on orkut.

Anyways, Jose has denied the rumors of the spat with the board on the official website. But he didnt say that he wont be leaving explicitly. All he said was ‘I love CFC’. So we cant really tell.

Good news is that Robben is back and Wigan has a few problems in defense with some players injured. So hopefully we win by a good margin and end our drawing streak in the epl.

We need the motivation and drive to start performing again. Hopefully the re-introduction of Robben, Drogba and Riccy will end this ‘crisis’.

the same question arised last season when chelsea started loosing points regularly and the gap started reducing and at the end it we failed to win against fulham. and then we won the epl by beating MANU.

so as my friend midfield_decider asked how chelsea gonna face MANU,LIVERPOOL AND ARSENAL….
the answer is simple….
first let focus on our next game against wigan as our jose said.
so its about wigan now.
we are in a very good position, robben is back. and also ricardo…

so its a good sign…..
jose is not leaving.

i dont think he leaves the best def in world and the best goalkeeper in the world very soon. if he is leaving then the CRISIS starts.

JM is no more new and HE IS LEAVING why? cuz he dodged the question so beautifully and (unlike the football he likes) did not clear up the rumours even when asked to , so he is leaving finally some good luck (though i hope i m proved wrong)!!!!!1

Hey berryfreshman good to see ur post and ur defination of beautiful football (though u r harping on the same BC tune)!!!!
Beauty means something attractive to look at and if u guys think CFC play beautiful football i wont want to meet ur gals(just kidding), so acc to u guys we play attractive football while BARCA , MANU AND ARSEY r the jokers in the park eh????

The way they lob around the ball, the absolute passing, the one touch football, the quick breaks, the great set-ups ,the finishes its not just the goal its the way they believe in football , pure and defined, just what attractive means!!!!!

CFC r a beast not a beauty , whats beautiful in countless bookings and needless tackles???? or the way we frustrate the opponents by passing around in the defence instead of getting a move on, the lousy set-ups (nobody even does it anyway) and wait for a set-piece or a defensive blunder????THIS is beauty????
POOR TASTE!!!!!!!

always when you see a team that is not in form, their football will always be ugly or not beautiful. did u happen to see barca losing to smaller teams, arsenal losing to sheffield, fulham were horrible football, their draw with porto was one of the worst snoozefest i have ever seen, most boring football at its worst.

if u happen to read through the arsenal blogs, you can see how much they slate wenger and their pointless passing game and how much they admire chelsea. grass is always greener on the other side. arsenal fans would do anything to win a title than seeing their possession football scoring 6 goals one day and losing to a cluesless lowly opposition the other day.

we were at our best in the last two seasons when we were absolutely a terror. given the fact jose has to accomodate the new signings and manage the injuries to key players, i dont want chelsea to try to play beautiful football and lose more points. until we get back our injured players, we need to ensure that we stay in the hunt for the title and jose has done exactly that. jose is a very wise man.

i’m almost very certain joeblue that jose is a more wiser and intelligent man and knows more about football management than you do.

until we get ‘our’ players back, we should concentrate on the results than the way we play. simple.

I am fuming that Chelsea and Jose Mourinho are DISRESPECTING the people that are more important to Chelsea Football Club than Chelsea Football Club.

Those people are the FANS!!!!!! Me, you and everybody in the World who cares and wear the Blue and White shirt.

All Chelsea and Jose have to say is that Jose is leaving or Jose is staying. JOB DONE and then we all can get on with it.

All Jose has said is I LOVE CHELSEA!!! WTF is that. That doesnt tell me anything.
We have all been down this route before. Remember Claudio Ranieri’s last season (Mr A’s 1st). We all knew he was going but the club didnt deny it or confirm it until the season ended.

Chelsea are a DISGRACE at the way this speculation is being handled. Everybody who needs to know knows what is going on, the FANS need to know what is going on because if it wasnt for the fans, there would be NO Chelsea Football CLub.

Fans who go to matches including myself pay out an AWFUL lot of money to follow Chelsea, not just in tickets but travel, food, drink, programmes, cup games, european travel and the like and this whole scenario is a disgrace and Chelsea will become the laughing stock of football yet again!!!!

If Chelsea want to become the BIGGEST brand name in football then they need to get their communications and media house in order.

COME ON CHELSEA SORT IT OUT!!!

If you want to read more you can on my blog l8ter

its a pity that a senior fan like blueblood does realise that what jose and the club are doing is nothing but a media gimmick to distract all. blueblood . . . we did not expect this from YOU

Elections Now!

It is time for Abramovich to Leave Chelsea! We will keep our manager JM who has been League Champion in the past four years - the early two times in FC Porto, with a budget some 60 times smaller!
Are we chelsea supporters to accept a “president” to break the back of the team by denying the supporters two centre backs and in so doing to cause the season to be ruined?
