Chelsea 2-2 Reading: Where are our clean sheets?

Drogba_Reading.jpg

He did his best!

One thing I like about football is that all matches are played only in the weekends and those European matches that are played in the midweek would also be in the nights. For someone like me with a lengthy day job, this is just perfect. Occasionally like today, matches are played in the afternoon on a day that is not globally a holiday. So, when Chelsea were at work, I was at work too.

Chereasco.PNG

Though I didnt see the match, I would not complain too much. Looked like we played well. Their first goal was offside but still 3 points were there for our taking. We made another heart-stopper move once again after 85 mins but on the net on our side, this time. Blame it on Ashley, poor concentration and poor decision making.

Once again, we have shipped two goals and this time at home. Though those were unfortunate goals, Jose really really needs to work on our defence. I want those days back when we used to do clean sheet after clean sheet.

Drogba scored his 19th and 20th goal of the season. As I have been saying in this blog, he is all set for this player of the season award. He doesnt have too much of a contest there.

Drogba’s first goal:

Drogba’s second goal:

After the match Jose praised the opposition for how well they played. Read it here because, anything uncontroversial from Jose will not catch public attention. This is how Jose took the result with grace:

That was a fair result. We did enough to win because we scored two goals and could have scored more. I don’t think I can complain about the players. For example the game at Wigan was easy but we made it hard for ourselves. Yes, I had reason to be unhappy with them then.

But today no because Reading made it difficult for us. When the opponents do well and create problems, you can’t complain, only praise the opposition. They got a point at Stamford Bridge. Of course we want to win every game and we are never happy to draw, but there is no criticism aimed at my players because they did the best they possibly could.

Steve Coppell did a favour to Stephen Hunt by not playing him today. Earlier, Stephen Hunt had said this - “I’ve had letters from Chelsea fans saying I did nothing wrong”. Again this is not as interesting as saying ‘Stephen Hunt receives death threat from Chelsea fans‘. So, this has not hit the headlines of any newspapers or websites.

Okay. Man Utd lead now by 4 points. The gap is still manageable. One more day like the 17th December, (win for us and defeat for Man Utd), will get the gap back to just a point. Looks like Jose would be waiting for the transer window to get some quality replacement/partner for Captain John.

Though I’m not really happy about the current situation, I’m excited that this is a fantastic contest between Chelsea and Man Utd for the title, which is going to remain in Stamford Bridge.

Nothing to worry. We will the title. When Chelsea were 15 pts ahead until March, the press was saying Chelsea could slip and allow Man utd to edge us for the title. Now we are talking about just 4 pts gap in december.

I am a Chelsea fan and if you ask me the contest is over.
It’s ManUTD who will win EPL this year.
And the problem is not 4-point gap.
The problem is Jose Mourinho.
He just does not see what the the problem is.
BC, you hope to have one more day like the 17th December. Suppose we have a day when MU loses again (rarely enough) so what? Chelsea will continue to draw and lose too.
I told before that Jose’s luck will run out, and it did.
Can anyone tell me what has Jose been doing all this time with the team?
Why oh why Ballack is untouchable?
Why oh why Sheva and Robben do not play together?
Why oh why Robben weren’t on the pitch today?
Jose under his hand has a team which can play and win even without a manager. Thus if Chelsea were somehow successful this season it was due to the team’s potential. But if this team is not playing the best it can play and if they are trailing some other team on the top then this means that the problem is a manager.
Jose Mourinho, currently, is blind enough not to see that the team’s chemistry is destroyed by introduction of Ballack to the midfield. Jose is blind enough to be attracted by Ballack’s strong personality and not by his game which is spoiled since the beginning of the season. JM is blind enough not to see that there is lack of creativity in the midfield due to Ballack-Lampard link. JM is blind enough not to see that Sheva and Robben should play together.

Give JM a small team like Porto, he will do much better.

Thanx.

hi midfielder. but for the stupid own goal we had 3 pts and sailing smoothly. just because cole’s clearance ricocheted off essien to the net and hilario was not ready for it, you dont say jose is the problem. for you to know, robben is injured and thats why he didnt play.

man utd still have to travel to anfield, bridge and grove. they have some tricky fixtures this january to bolton, pompy etc. you never know.

i have full faith in jose. we will win the title. man utd will crumble for sure. as a fan to fan suggestion, dont lose faith on your team and boss so soon. give them some time. after all they are just 4 points off.

c’mon jose! show your stuff! let the distractors bite the dust.

Hi special one,
I know own goal is a bad luck but I’m not only looking to the specific situation in a specific match. I’m considering the situation overall. If Chelsea today scored 3 or 4 goals would that own goal cost anything? No. Tell me why Chelsea cannot just finish off mediocre teams while MU is killing them with entertainment and ease? Why Chelsea has had to be behind many games recently in order to start playing FOOTBALL? And why Chelsea couldn’t control the game against Wigan after they were 2-0 ahead?
You are telling me that MU still have to travel to Anfield and Grove. But so do Chelsea. Besides who can give guarantee that Chelsea will beat MU at the Bridge? If you ask me, come that day Chelsea will be trailing MU by more than 3 points.
You are free to blame me for being too pessimistic about my team. But let’s wait and see whether I am right or wrong. I would like to be wrong but I am almost sure that I am right. Half of the league are gone and there is still no confidence in Chelsea’s game and almost every game Jose has had to rely on his bench. That certainly do say something about the manager. Mark my words.

This was a bad game for chelsea…..we cannot rely on man u’s lip ups to win the EPL we have to take action our selves, if man u slips ups that is none of our concern as long as we are wining it won’t matter. I agree that there is still plenty of time to close the gap andeven win the EPL but if man u keep winning and playing the way theu are and if chelsea keep sslipping up like againsta reading…..we gota say goodbye to the trophy. I mean look at the difference from this season and last season we used to kill off opponenets even b4 the match started they knew they were going to lose because of the mere fact that they were playing against chelsea but now b4 the game teams talk about how they are going to bring the champions down. The way i see it is that there is no real problem with the fromation or ythe players we have or the manager. the problem is that the players don’t have the motivation and will to win matches like they did i mean it’s not like we have trouble findng the net it’s the fact that we want to win with the least effort possible with a one goal difference or a last minute scorcher like we have done against everton and wigan. I mean look at arsenal, man u, and liverpool as soon as they score one goal they keep hammering down more goals but us when we score one goal we slack off and give the opponenets a chance to eqaulize then we react. Why do we always REact as opposed to take action and win. We have got some of the biggest names in the industry and we have all the capabilties of being champions, so why aren’t we? Obseving from today’s game i can say that the team lost it’s “spark” its “will to win and demolish opponests and score as much goals as possible” this foes not exist inchelsea this season. That is our problem. Players seemed lost today and the on;y players who i think really tried their best where drogba and SWP the rest were slacking off and not giving their usual. Essien who used to be the power source of the team seems lost on the pitch…I mean i know his capabalities and remeber the barca game at hoem when he rounded the entire barca midfield..now he just runs around the pitch trying to play his positio which is constantly being changed and plays in a position he does not play best in. Plus…it is greatly negative to play ballack and lampard at the same time as it is affecting both players as well as then team negatively. Ballack and lampard have a similar position, similar playing role, and similar capabilties, I mena no offense but both are slow players and having both in the pitch at the same time is bad as opposed to having two speedy wingers and one of them playing offensive midfield in their desired position. Essien should go back to his position of center midfield as that is where i see him playing best. I hope chelsea recover quickly and i have all th confidence in them. This year i hope we geth the EPL and Champions league and laugh in th face of all critics and haters.

I was following the game between breaks at work on the net (BBC world service). What a shameful way to loose a game. But, as we all know, Chelsea sure didn’t deserve the win at Wigan. Perhaps this was the football gods way of setting things straight.
We should all be concerned about the possibility of Man U holding on to this four point gap. Sir Alex’s men have gelled together quite nicely. They aren’t prone to too many errors. and are very well led by the likes of Giggs and Neville.
But, there is still time for Chelsea to take the Prem. The return of Terry is definitely needed. Picking up a good central defender to back him is a must. Hilario ain’t bad but he ain’t Cech or Carlo either. As far as the strikers are concerned, I still believe we can be patient with Sheva and Kalou. There is no doubt to the talent in the midfield. But I was no fan of getting Ballack from jump street. Overall, Chelsea needs a killer instinct .

Dec 27, 2006 @ 11:04

Roman here
I watched the match last night and it wasn’t that bad and if it were not for that OG, lots of the comments above would be a bit different I guess.

As I see it ,on the plus side
(1) the defence with a fit -Carlvalho was a lot better than the last 2-3 games except for the OG and will certainly get better

(2) Our attack : Drogba Kalou SWP sheva are looking good ,sharp and confident

(3) I feel that we are not that rattled by the setback or loss of points that much and the team is gradually settling down.

(4) Team spirit is good

(5) We do not depend on luck ,bad offside decisions, sloppy opposition to win games

(6) One thing that JM will surely know about winning a competition like this, is that it’s not a mathematical progression , a one point, two points ahead of you mentality that wins it but building up your own momentum that brushes aside opponents and title contenders. Kinda like golf . Raise your game with birdies and eagles all the way and then the other guys start to wilt of their accord.
But even in a so-called slump we are very good .

But then things that gotta be sorted out

(1) The defence’s confidence
(2) The Ballack conundrum
(3) Getting JT ,Petr,J.Cole ,Cudicini,Robben back on to the field
ASAP
I believe that if we can sort out at least 2 of the above we can do it

Alrite BC. Got your messgae thnxs. I have been lurking for a while reading some of the comments left here over the last few weeks and they have kept me serioulsy entertained. Anyway

Two things that should happen SOON
DROP BALLACK or get rid of him
BUY A CENTRAL DEFENDER
JT is going to be out for another three weeks or longer if he needs surgery on his back.

The sooner JT gets back the better. Three league games six goals conceded and yesterday especially in the second-half the defence was all over the place. The OG confirms it.

For Fulham on Saturday - Boulahrouz is suspended so no doubt Ferreira will start at the back again.

Wake up Jose and look that Ballack is taking the P**s!!!

hey guys i did see the match yesterday and i must say ballack DIDNOT have a bad game. Its just that chelsea have been playing so well for the last two seasons that its getting difficult for us to admit that chelsea is actually trailing by the mid of the season. Come on guys, give a break, most football teams across the globe let alone epl teams would do anything to be able to replicate chelsea’s “bad form”!!
As correctly pointed out earlier we are sorely missing our charismatic captain and brilliant petr. We have had a wonderful season so far when we only consider the midfield and the forward. I am sure most of you will admit that we seem much more capable of scoring goals this season(clinching late winners in so many matches……) Its just time when both the above said guys make a come back and once we plug in the defence, god i don’t see why we can’t have all the four titles this season!!!
Let us all enjoy this absolutely engrossing season……

well… sometimes just tinkering might not change… there is a significant difference between chelsea of past 2 (or 3) years and this year. JM once said I donot need stars I need footballers. Unforutnately this year he has signed 3 stars(if you dont include obi mikel who behaves like one) and others like lampard have become stars. We dont see many things that chelsea was known for - the wingers - the tight defence - the ball possesion (remember JM said that the game changes when possesion is lost).

Somehow I feel a lot needs to be chaged in chelsea team to correct the rot they been this year…. they are winning but only by chance

BB58
You’ve been a blues fans for so long and been to a whole lotta games so,
Could u tell us what usually happens to chelsea players who are not appreciated / booed by chelsea fans for a long time ?

And on the telly , from close-ups ,it sometimes looks to me that ballack’s body language says that his thoughts are somewhere else and that he really doesn’t get on well/gel with Lamps. Do the fans at the Bridge feel that ?

Also he’s been a bit spiteful and vengeful with fouls.
Also he’s not been doing those runs at opposing defences like he used to do at Bayern.
And why does he bump into at least one chelsea player per match?.
AND cause he’s not really attacking or defending but just piddling around in midfield we are like boxing with only one arm , man.
.Look at his movement on and off the ball.
Mediocre I say .
So Lamps and Essien have to do overtime duty.
Other teams know this . They ain’t and we ain’t blind or born yesterday. We all can smell that something’s wrong.
He’s distracted ,to say the least

i have never been a Ballack fan but really dont you guys think you are putting too much of a blame on him. well yes he always manages to get the referee’s attention with his tackles but having followed him in Bayern too i dont find that all too surprising. Its just the way he plays.
Anybody remmember our champions league encounter with
Bayern 2 season’s ago?!!?
As for buying stars…..when you have the moolah y not…..n its too harsh to blame the special one for bringing these guys……
Its very easy to start questioning so soon …..same thing happened for drogba and essien and since they have started performing so superbly this season, suddenly we have everyone changing their tone…….

Roman I will try and answer you as best I can.
From the old days there are not many fans left I am afraid to say, this is why the only atmoshpere you get at Chelsea apart from the away end is in the Matthew Harding stand. Chelsea fans expect 100% effort no matter how good a player you are. Chelsea had rubbish players in the past but they gave 100% and became heroes and legends for example Doug Rougvie and Joey Jones - rubbish but gave everything - for example.
Ballack even with his reputation isnt doing it, I think you summed it up perfectly.
Trust me the Chelsea fans who can get into the games and ‘know their stuff’ will soon let Ballack know that they are unhappy - I’m afraid it is starting now!!!

Terry blow is important. Defense problems are obvious. However, this is not the most important challenge for Chelsea to face in the future. The most important thing to accomplish is to make all of them play TOGETHER AS A TEAM. The Chelsea game is very much fragmented (if compared to Man Utd, Arsenal or Liverpool), the ball does not flow easily. Almost everyone in midfield wants to score (Lamps even declared that he is proud of his achievement to be the best goalscoring midfielder in the history of Chelsea), Essien wants to score and show his strengh before passing the ball. Terry wants to score and comes often to punch headers into adverse net. Ballack wants to score more since Jose declared that he should and will score around 10 goals this season. Robben wants to score and will necessarily dribble someone in the way before crossing the ball. Drogba wants to score from almost every position (good or bad). He already declared that he should be the best player in the English league and he will be upset if he is not. All his goals are either stunning or fantastic, because due to his physical strengh he wants, and many times can shoot from almost any point even the most impossible. Because of so many indivuduals in Chelsea trying to make a personal goalscoring impact, the Chelsea game does not flow at all. Why have fantastic goals or late stunning winners, when with such quality of the field you can put simple goals in the net - result of team play and understanding that everyone has to do its job on the pitch, and not because of some stunning performance of a striker. This is because current Drogba form may end up one day, but the fragmented game of Chelsea will remain. Sheva’s plight is not due as much to the loss of form, but to the current way Chelsea is performining. He is not served by the miedfield at all, you can see that he wants the ball, works hard, but does not get it. And when the manager builds new dividing lines between “untouchables” and “touchables”, it does not help at all to consolidate the team. I have never seen anyone to declare that some of the players are “untouchable”. Just think how it impacts on those who are left out… Football as any other job and performance is about mentality and confidence, and when you lose it, because of adverse attitude of your teammates or managers’ dissapointment in some players, you may watch how some best striker in the world becomes average player who is afraid to make a mistake. It is incredible. Overall Terry blow is significant because Jose relies on some key players (Terry, Drogba, etc.) and does not emphasize team performance. In this case beware of injuries when they come. Imagine Drogba getting injured ….

Personally, i see no problem in midfielders trying to score, as long as they score, which they really do. We have scored enough goals and have very healthy goal difference of about 20 goals. So, the problem is not in the scoring. It is in the defence and conceding of goals. If we concede no goal or only one goal per match, we will win with ease.

i think we shld focus on the CB position, without JT oppossitions are throwing crosses in and balls in which leaves us in much discomfort and we look very weak in set pieces at the moment there r very few replacements available and we need them to play champs lg as well……………

The only names crossing my mind r F.Meira of stuttgart, J.Andrade of Deportivo, Bordon of Schalke, Juan of Leverkusen and the young Metzelder of Dortmund good enough to replace JT and will also be available for champs lg!!!!!!

Go jm we need a super signing!!!1

Here is a story for you. JM has considered playing Didier Drogba as an emergency centre-back to compensate for the absence of JT!!!

I doubt that he will, cos we wont have anyone in attack. Cole, Robben injured, the Shev not firing….. yet.

Put Ballack there - it will give him something to do LOL

Ben Sahar is being thought about for the cup games against Macclesfield in the FA Cup and Wycombe Wanderers in the Carling Cup semi-finals.

It was longtime comin this loss… Chelsea really, really got lucky in their last few matches and were saved only from lucky strikes by their top players.. It just shows how essential terry is to the squad and how even the Russian mafia’s millions can’t help chelsea from building a respectably good squad. Mourinho, too is losing his bearings playing the out of form bouhlarouz (whatever his name is) and purchasing shevchenko and ballack-complete misfits in the squad…
Watching chelsea (or we can say drogba only cause he does most of the work for the team now right?) right now has gotten boring too and in order to even having a faint hope of chasing manu (p,.s im not a manu fan) even with all their millions, they will for once need to use their brains this season in the jan. transfer window…
I quote something written in another forum on this site “I’d rater watch paint dry” (referring to chelsea playing)… He stole the words from my mouth.
So best of luck all ya chelsea fans (u’ll need it) and pls for god’s sake buy a (good) central defender (pity gallas was sold).
