Football Icon: Chelsea and English Football

Eyes on the future of Chelsea!
Half of the England National team is from the Chelsea first team. If this is not enough contribution to English football, Chelsea is going miles ahead in promoting English football by scouting the best English talents and giving them a fantastic opportunity.
Football Icon is a British television programme shown on Sky One. The programme gives young unsigned football players between the ages of 16 and 18 a chance to win a contract with Premiership champions Chelsea. Thousands of players who enter are whittled down to twelve finalists, all of whom are put to the test at their Cobham training ground. The players are eliminated week by week until only the final three remain, when José Mourinho and his staff select a winner.
Football Icon 1 began in June 2005, and 5,000 young footballers took part. The series was won by Chelsea fan Sam Hurrell who idolises Zola and Terry. Football Icon 2 is currently being aired on Sky One at 8pm on Fridays. 14 Boys, out of 7,000, won a trial with Chelsea with two boys currently being eliminated each week. Please do visit Chelsea’s football icon website to know more.
While we are in the circumstances where none of the starting eleven in Arsenal happens to be English, I’m really proud of what Chelsea is doing to English football. Arsenal have their own weak arguments like ‘they want to win irrespective of the players passports’ which does not hold good as they win nothing. But Chelsea’s strategy seems very clear. To buy quality players and top quality manager and win some titles and establish a name. Then in phase 2, buy a lot of quality youth players (Sahar, Obi, Kalou etc) and bring up youth British talent as well. Few years down the line we would have team developed in our own ranks.
Fifa and the international players’ union have proposed a quota whereby a side must name six players eligible for the club’s national association. The first manager to pull the trigger at FIFA was ‘hard-hitting (literally)’ Frenchman Arsene Wenger. While he has insulted English football by saying that FIFA is trying to protect mediocrity by bringing this quota system, he looks completely shattered looking at the impact this might have on his Le Arsennielle team.
While we can discuss and argue on the number of home players in starting eleven, I would prefer that this rule stays, even if it is 2 or 3 players. Anyway there exists a quota for European players already and this has not brought in mediocrity but if you do for the national players, it does?
I’m happy that Chelsea is investing in the future of English Football and bringing up the English talent while whingers keep whinging.

if the quota system is in, the manager’s skills of scouting and man-management will be put to different kind of test. i welcome that too
That’s right. While everyone’s saying Chelsea has bought their success by buying top players, Jose Mourinho did not even bother to respond to this FIFA announcement. Because, he is a top quality manager who can win in any circumstances. And look who jumped up first?

I agree with Chelsea having half of the regular England side and I’m totally convinced that media is biased towards other clubs.
But I don’t agree with ur thoughts on quota system. The major difference between International football and club football is if u need a player for any position, u can scout around the WORLD and get him. That is not the case with International football (except for Deco playing for Portugal).
If we want to see competitive mathces in EPL, we should not force the criteria of having 6 players of English origin.
On the other hand, it will also limit the number of players coming to EPL which I don;t want to happen.

Tough luck that England has got only a small population so therefore a small talent pool .. But it does have one of the best leagues with best talent in the world . Just make sure that the EPL is the best , so lot’s of English boys and foreign youngsters who are eligible to get English passports will want to become football players instead of stock broker or drug addicts or thugs.
. That’s the way to go . Put quotas in place and you are goners. Look up “quota ” in the dictionary. “A system that has to be used in a situation of scarcity and dire straits”. So the whole league goes down ther drain. And all of us in Asia will start watching La liga at ungodly hours if we have to.
We all gotta wake up, England might not win the World Cup soon but a quarter of the Blues team might.
Nationalism like racism should not be encouraged ,To say the least , I say

Over the weekend, I was bombarded by friends from Man U & Liverpool fan. They were saying that Chelsea is just filthy rich, buying over good players to make them win. And in a native dialect, Chelsea means ‘Stinks’. I was a little annoyed but well …
Hopefully someday, people will begin to realise the good of Chelsea .. the media will give the Blues a fair share of the pie too … we’re just too played down.
And as for the quota system, sounds like a good idea too so as to retain the English origins in EPL. After all it’s EPL! Yup but it’d also be good to have a mixture so that skills can be exchanged & potentials can be complemented.
Cheers

Football Icon is a great way to showcase new talent that has been missed by the ‘talent’ scout network. The boys in Football Icon 2 are looking much better than the boys were last year and that is no disrepect to last years winner Sam Hurrell. Sam got a new 1 year contract and has played a part in all but 3 of the Academy games this season. The Academy has played 12 and won ten.
Academy players to watch out for: Scott Sinclair (who I think is better than Theo Walcott), Ben Sahar 17 yr Israeli Youth International and Miroslav Stoch 16 yr Slovakian International, plus there are lots more boys with extremely bright futures in front of them.
COME ON CHELSEA

@Roman (& Wenger)
I dont agree that the quality of football in EPL will deteriorate if this quota system is introduced. Anyway, I assume that there can be two arguments with respect to this system:
Argument#1: England has all the quality that is there is Italy or Spain or Brazil or Argentina. So, even if this quota system is introduced, EPL will still continue to be of top quality
Argument#2: England does not have the quality players to make the league an interesting and top quality one. So, actions need to be taken to ensure quality players of English origin are developed in England and given enough top flight action in EPL.
In either arguments, quota system should be fine.
As it is, if as a manager, I want to make up an EPL club team full of Brazilians and Argentines, it may not be possible, because there is a restriction (on non-Euro players). While we accepted this restriction and prepare the squad accordingly, why can\’t we accept this quota system?
I\’m not against buying players from other countries. I love that. I love to see different styles and different talents in EPL. But it should not be to an extent of none of the first eleven being English (like Arse does so often). All I say is, let\’s have atleast 2-3 English players and make it mandatory.
Any radical change will be difficult to digest initially because the fruits can be enjoyed only in the long term.

Well a quota like at least 2-3 English players woyuld be just about OK but not something like no more than 5-5 foreigners per team . The mix we have at Chelsea seems like the ideal.Don’t u think ,guys?
BTW
Are u guys BC and 58 based in London?
Is this site supported in anyway by CFC?

Yes, Roman. Even I feel a quota of 2-3 players would be just fine and Chelsea is right there.
And Roman, the answers (revelations!) for your series of questions:
I (Blue Champion) own this blog and write for this blog. I’m in India and an Indian. Blueblood58 is in London (supporting Chelsea for 41 years!) and he wrote for this blog for some days but his personal commitments did not allow him to write further, but he is still a very good contrbiutor through comments. This site is not supported by CFC and it is actually the other way round! This is just a personal blog of a Chelsea fan (might get notied later, I hope)
I work for a bank for my living. Football, Chelsea and this blog are just my passion. You gotta spend about 10 hours a week or so to write in a blog. It was not hacked as such but heavily spammed by a Man Utd fan. I blocked his IP later.
Looks like you’d like to start a blog of your own mate! All the best anyways!

the point that chelsea is contributing to the english football more than any other club is always downplayed by the press. if the same is happening in man utd, this may have good very good publicity. this is because most of the reporters and editors of sports magazines are man utd/livpool/arsenal fans. may be things will change in few years and we get the credit that we deserve.
